PERRY ROAD RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION SHUT DOWN FOOD TRUCK PARK The city’s first Food Truck Park was launched on the 14th of July and situated in our very own, Bandra. The Mumbai Food Truck Park, a unique concept, started off it’s journey in a space behind Anthony’s Garage; with 10 trucks that were cooking and serving food to curious customers who walked in. A fresh concept with a unique USP. A thought that may have crossed your mind, why did the park shut down soon?

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) authorities confirmed that the Bombay Food Truck Company did not have the necessary permissions required to run the place. The company had not acquired any permission from the H-West ward, to run the Park. Perry Road Residents’ Association were completely against this concept as they did not want any commercial

activity in their area. They filed a complaint with the BMC chief, transport commissioner, police commissioner and MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar. The narrow road leading to Anthony’s Garage is usually congested due to vehicles travelling in both directions. The addition of the Food Truck Park would only make matters worse.

We got in touch with Mr. Anil Joseph, chairman of the Perry Road Residents’ Association, who was glad to speak to us about the inconvenience that would have been caused to the residents of Perry Road. “If you know, Bandra was planned as per Town Planning Scheme.

Bandra Veterans of the Indo-Pak War 1965 (Western Front) As we have just completed the 71st Anniversary of our Independence, let us recall two veteran stalwarts of Bandra, both Stanislites - Class of ’42 and ’55. To some of us the 1965 War is long forgotten. Others don’t even recollect this Chapter of our country’s glorious history.

Here are some of those Bandraites.

Flt. Lt. Raphael Donald (IAF) Flight Lieutenant Raphael B. Donald IAS (Retd.)

Joint Secretary, Urban Land Development, Government of Maharashtra was an old time resident of Bandra. He was educated in Stanislaus High School Bandra and completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) from St. Xaviers College. Then, he joined the Provincial Civil Service. In 1948, he was Commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the Air Traffic Control Branch of the Indian Auxiliary Air Force. This required training every weekend, and an Annual camp of a month. Besides, one had to attend courses and pass promotions - the same as the regulars. This was the same as the Territorial Army raised in 1948.

He has seen active service in 1965 at Ambala Airfield & was awarded the Samar Seva Star 1965 and Raksha Medal 1965.

In 1970, he and Major Leon Fonseca were offered permanent commissions, but declined since they were better placed in their civil jobs.

In 1978 he was promoted to Deputy Secretary, and in 1985 as Joint Secretary, Government of Maharashtra, Urban Land Development. He hung up his boots in ‘93.

Raphey & his wife with Air Vice Marshal Keeler & his wife. Both brothers Denzil & Trevor were known as the Sabre Killers Past retirement, he was heavily involved in Church and community affairs, always ready to help. Among his numerous posts he held was Chairman, Bandra Sports Association, Founder and Past President of the Bombay Catholic Sabha, Managing Committee Member of the Indian Red Cross Society, Special Advisor to Holy Family Hospital, Bandra and President of the Bandra Gymkhana. He was also an advisor to the Archbishop of Bombay.

‘Raphey’, as he was fondly called, leaves behind two sons, two daughters & eight grandchildren. His wife predeceased him in 1999. He passed away in 2015 after dedicated service to God and the country.

Paratroopers “Wings” Major Leon G. Fonseca (Retd.), was educated at St. Vincents, High School Poona, St. Stanislaus High School, Bandra, National College, Bandra, and did his Aeronautical Engineering in 1962 from Calcutta. He has

a Diploma in Russian & is a certified Genealogist from the USA. He holds Professional qualifications in Aeronautical Business Management and Administrative Management from the UK. He also holds a Private Pilots Licence (190 hours flying) and is a qualified Army Paratrooper.

He has worked for Indian Oil, Parke-Davis, Tatas and Coca-Cola India Region - as Head Administration and Security. Post retirement he was Secretary of the 136 year old hill station club, ‘The Club’ Mahabaleshwar.

Major is on the Board of Management of the 140 year old, Bombay Institution for Deaf and Mutes and Rev. D.G. D’Almeida Educational Fund since the 80’s.

He had for two years, daily supervised the work of records, birth, marriage and burial of the Church of Santa Anna (since demolished) and St. Andrews Church (1575). The work of restoration of 24 volumes was carried out by INTACH. His family tree is awaiting letters Patent from the College of Arms, London.

‘The Fonsecas of Bandora’ are the oldest East Indian family - and have given 30 people to the Service of the Lord. The Fonsecas are the only family to have an Arch erected to the memory of Mr. Peter John Fonseca by the erstwhile Government of Bombay.

In the 1971 war, his Air Defence Regiment (TA) won 3 Gallantry Awards and Major had the honour of leading the Victory Parade on 26 January 1972 through the crowded roads of the Eastern suburbs, standing in his jeep followed by 3 Bofors 40mm L60 guns WWII vintage, his men and various units of the Army, Navy and Air Force, Coast Guards, Police etc.

Major has two children their spouses and four grandchildren are settled in the UK and the USA.

Major Leon & his wife Eulalie celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in Katy, Houston, Texas; along with daughter Tanya and family and son Josef and family setted in USA. Also present were their bridesmaid settled in the USA. Their best man was KIA in the 1971 War. As per rules, Raphey and Leon did not receive gratuity, pension nor are they entitled to MH treatment, post separation.

They put their lives on the line for the country, so that you could sleep peacefully at night; while they were on duty 24 hours a day on the borders. Say a pray for these two brave hearts, one of whom has passed away and the other is a 79 year old - moving around with his trade mark flat cap and always with a walking stick.

Army General Eustace D’Souza of Bandra, made the Chinese eyelid blink first Between April and September 1965, while the Indo Pak war was being fought, many attempts were made by China to engage India in battle on the Tibet Watershed at Nathu La Pass (the only entry to Sikkim from Tibet). The most provocative of these attempts occurred on the night on 21st - 22nd September 1965 at 0200 hrs when the PLA attacked Indian posts at Nathu La & two other mountain passes, from Chumbi valley. Defending Nathu La was an Indian Army battalion commanded by (then) Lt Colonel Eustace D’Souza, which repulsed this & many subsequent attempts by the Chinese to enter Sikkim.

These attempted intrusions by China caught the attention of the international media who saw in them a serious threat to world peace. While The Times London headline on 18th September 1965 read “China’s Warning”, Germany’s Die Presse of 4th October 1965 carried a four part

So intense was the tension on the border that US News & World dispatched a correspondent to Nathu Lla who filed his story on 01 November 1965 entitled “Looking into the Chinese Gun from a distance of 25 feet” (Eyewitness story). The media was all praise for the Indian soldiers & the best tribute to our troops and their young commander Lt Colonel Eustace D’Souza, was carried in The Statesman on 30 September 1965 based on the visit to Nathu La by GH Jansen, who wrote: “This then was the exact spot where the very tip of the spearheads of two immense forces, India and China, clashed….At Nathu La for two days running, India & China, eyeball to eyeball, had tried to outstare each other; and it was the Chinese eyelid that had blinked: the first time since 1962 that this had happened.”

years thereafter & as a acknowledgement of his military leadership, gave him charge of the famous Black Cat brigade based in Changu which is tasked with protecting the East Sikkim border. Eustace was later given command of the prestigious Dagger Division based in Baramulla, Kashmir.

During the 1971 Indo Pak war he was in charge of the entire border covering Uri-Lipa Valley-Kupwara-Tangdhar axis. He was awarded the Para Vishishst Seva Medal for “distinguished service of the most exceptional order” for his contribution to the war effort against Pakistan. He retired from the Army in 1975 as the General Officer Commanding, Delhi. He remained Colonel of the Maratha Light Infantry even after retirement, till 1978. Eustace was born in Karachi and brought up in Bandra. He schooled at St Stanislaus on Hill Road and later studied at St Xavier’s College near VT. At the ripe old age of 91, he died in 2013.

Horrendous noise emitted by autorickshaws What strikes me as astonishing is the complete absence of any complaint from anybody about the horrendous noise emitted by autorickshaws. Has nobody living in the suburbs of Mumbai noticed that about 80 percent of the autorickshaws on the road are emitting a much higher engine noise level now than they used to?

In fact the decibel level is well over double the legally permissible level. This is because the rickshaw owners have discovered that by cropping the exhaust pipes of the rickshaws they can eliminate, or drastically reduce the necessity of burning off frequently the oily residue that rapidly builds up and chokes the exhaust pipe.

This burning off process costs them money as well as earning time. They of course do not give a whit that by shortening the exhaust pipe they produce more noise than the public can tolerate. For people living along the main roads, such as Turner – Perry Road, Hill Road, etc. it is nearly impossible even to carry on a sensible conversation above the noise level.

It is a proven fact that excessive noise levels can seriously affect the health of the persons exposed to high noise levels for long periods; and we have been exposed to this maddening noise level day in, day out, from the wee hours of the morning till late into the night. This is certainly having a serious deleterious effect on the mental and physical health of the populace in the suburbs.

Particularly badly affected are the senior citizens and small children. Stress, inability to sleep, irritability, neurosis, car-

diac problems, etc., as also more serious illeffects of continuous, high level s of noise are medically established consequences.

Rickshaws with 2-stroke engines have always been heavy air and noise polluters and should have been banned long ago, which they have been – in the island city of Mumbai. The suburbs? Heck, who cares?

All the important people live in south Mumbai anyway.

And yet, in the current uproar of demands by the rickshaw owners and drivers to increase fares, and the equally strident complaints of rickshaw users regarding non-availability of rickshaws and/or their refusal to accept passengers for short runs, NOBODY has brought up the subject of extreme NOISE POLLUTION artificially

created by the majority of rickshaws. This issue MUST be addressed urgently for the good health of the public at large (in the suburbs).

This subject is quite apart from the other illegalities committed by rickshaws.

At least a good 40 percent of them display no lights even when it is very dark. They merrily race up One Way Streets, as also through red lights, with no care for anybody’s safety.

They stop suddenly in the middle of the road, or make ‘U’ turns or turn offs without signaling. But they demand an increase in fares. What do their union leaders have to say about all this? Nothing.

So even if it is impractical to expect imposition of a law banning all rickshaws,

Parents Day at Apostolic Carmel Convent, Hill Road; was action-packed, right from the start. Interactive games, gracefully conducted by Darryl Loyola and his team; were co-ordinated very professionally, getting even the most ‘shy’ parent to participate with no inhibitions. Music provided by Caje Sound created the right mood and enhanced the spirit of the games.

Teachers helped their young students to showcase their talents, in between the games, which had a lot of water-added effects, that added to the fun. Darryl was at

his usual best form, getting all parents to follow his steps and relive their childhood days of spontaneous gaiety. His team point system and competitive games helped to create a camaraderie, that had to be seen – to believe.

Although it was a cloudy day, with no rain; the simulated rain dance and other water sports were enough to energise the parent-teacher event and create memorable moments. Yes, all were witness to a successful ‘Rain Rendezvous’.

Those who do not toe the line should be fined at a level that hurts and repeat offenders should be de-licensed and taken off the roads.

The long-suffering public must make their Corporators and MLA’s take up this issue urgently before everyone ends up in the madhouse because of the incessant NOISE they are subjected to from early morning to late into the night. No civilized country can tolerate the terrible noise and pollution created by these monster vehicles.

Bandraite stirred a hornet’s nest with her rap on Mumbai’s monsoon woes Bandra girl & RJ Malishka Mendonca had stirred a hornet’s nest with her Marathi rap ‘Mumbai tula BMC war bharosa nahi ka’.

This had irked ruling party of the corporation for finger pointing misdeeds and mismanagement. Once upon a time many decades ago this same corporation was run

by British officers from the Colonial Raj & we used to call them ‘Colonial Pigs’. How wrong we were then without knowing, for at least they had the ‘milk of human kindness’, diligence of duty and were devoutly honest, disciplined & hardworking. If the skin was lily white, at least it was pure at heart. What we have today is the miserable condition of our potholed roads, mushrooming slums & the pathetic manner in which inspite of paying a 5% cess tax for Swachh Bharat people are dying of dengue & H1N1 flu.

Enough has been said & written about the manner in which the corporation runs its business for the public it serves. Even the commissioner made several promises throughout the year about the menace of eliminating potholes on roads, reprimanded his own engineers & supervisors,

issued notices to contractors, black listed them & even had a few arrested, yet we see everyday pictures in newspapers & on TV of the same happening through out the city. A Bandra woman biker was run over by a truck to her death on 23rd July 2017 at Dahanu while maneuvering a pothole.

Not forgetting to mention the horrendous deaths of 345 persons in Maharashtra from H1N1 flu. This sad tale is a never ending saga of the lackadaisical performance of

corporations & its elected representatives.

When Malishka hit big times with her Marathi rap, it went viral & made heads turn. An MP of the ruling party called it ‘derogatory’ & was ready to file a defamation suit of Rs. 500,000/-, when good sense prevailed & the court rejected his plea citing it ‘filmsy’. Retired HC Judge Kanade had wise words for the MP & the party that the song was to be seen & heard as a satire with no malicious intent. That was

not the end of the story, for the BMC got into action because the singer is Catholic & with no political backing. They raided her house to find fault or faults to pin her down and discovered dengue breeding mosquitoes in flower pots. Even Einstein would never have thought of this. Thank God he never worked for BMC. This is how BMC operates. Those who finger point their misdeeds are victimised. But it is the public of Mumbai who stood by Malishka & vehemently protested voicing their dissent on WhatsApp & on TV. Kapil Sharma, the comedian also got the wrong end of the stick when he tweeted PM Modi to complain about the forced nuisance of bribe taking by the BMC. Not only was he victimised, but also suffer the ignominy of shameful harassment so that next time he will not open his mouth to complain about any misdeeds of the corporation.

What is the lesson to be learnt from this story. Before you throw a stone & shatter the windows of BMC, make sure you are well armed or leave the country like Vijay Mallya.

The Town Planning Scheme meant that there were were different areas demarcated for markets, open spaces, commercial areas and fully residential areas. Over the years, residential areas have been affected by commercialization”, he says “one fine day, there were boards put up and a promo article in Mid-Day about the Food Truck Park. They said 12 food trucks were going to be parked behind Anthony’s garage, where 10 cars used to be kept, now you have 12 trucks

cooking, so in effect that is 12 kitchens amounting to 12 restaurants over there.

This place on Saturdays and Sundays, the junction of St. Paul’s Road, is terrible.

The amount of traffic and vehicles is very uncoordinated. Parking would have been a serious issue, causing a lot of trouble to the residents of the area. Another thing is, they themselves have put up a sign saying ‘No Parking Facility available here’.”

Anil and the rest of the association have opposed commercialization in the H-West ward since 2012. An important fact they have noticed is, throughout the years, the maximum number of pubs and bars in the city of Mumbai is concentrated in the H-West ward. “Currently, the Motor Vehicles Act does not permit vehicles to

We reached out to Roysten Misquitta for his take on the matter, however, he was unavailable. However he was quoted on a popular website, “We’ve finally wrangled all the permissions, so we’re here to stay,” he says—after a fashion. The trucks will change every three months or so, and he says some are driving in from as far afield as Gujarat, by all accounts the laboratory of India’s food truck fads.

The Quintessential Yacht Those Were the Days when there were no pubs in Bandra. Today pubs have proliferated in Bandra like mushrooms do in the monsoons. Toto’s (someone’s pet dog?), Hawaiian Shack (Do they live in shacks in Hawaii?), Salt & Pepper (The Big B used to have a beard like that till all the pepper finally turned salty). Oh there were plenty of speakeasies to speak of in lieu of pubs.

The only joint that came close to being a pub was Yacht. What an appropriate name too, given its nautical location. No, not the snooty Yacht Club in tony Apollo Bunder, just the humble Yacht Restaurant on Hill Road. Yacht pronounced by various generations of Bandra Buggers as Yatch,

Yourchit, Yoursht etc brings back myriad memories…. Yacht was where most of us downed our first beer. No other alcoholic beverages were served here, only beer. I recall one of our gang once was so full of beer, we thought we would have to carry him out on a bier! Another time another of our gang (now alas no more), took us for a birthday treat to Yacht. He ordered “Aloo Mutt-er”. When the dish was

served, he screamed at the waiter saying there was “only Aloo no Mutton!” On another occasion our canny Glenn Roach, ordered some kheema pau. After a while, he requested for some pieces of nimbu.

He squeezed the nimbu into the water and imperiously summoned the waiter telling the bemused chap: “Main te-ray-ko uloo banaiya. Dekh phookat mein nimbu pani mila!!!

Old timers will recall a wandering out of luck, Anglo Indian lady minstrel. She frequented the Bandra Catholic dominated housing societies like Virendra, St. Peter’s Colony, Nirmala Colony, etc She literally sang for her supper. Her theme song was “I went to see my darling last Saturday night”. On days she made surplus cash, she would troop in to Yacht for a beer. She kept the waiters entertained with peppy Hindi hits for hefty discounts or free beer.

Yacht with its vantage location was never short of customers. No idea how the authorities turned a Nelson’s eye to this beer bar located smack opposite a Church!

Incidentally, those were the days when the sermon was the major component of the Sunday mass. En masse, weary men to escape the weekly assault on their eardrums, would make a beeline for Yacht for a refreshing cup of tea. You could tell which priest was spewing fire & brimstone by the length of time spent by these outstanding Catholics, in Yacht. The management of Yacht was always customer friendly. Many out of town bachelors used to stay in Ferns Mansion, which houses Yacht. Even in the pre demonetisation days, these poor bachelors were perennially facing a cash crunch. They were generously granted credit facilities by Yacht, in an age when credit cards were not quite on the cards.

There was something magnetic about Yacht which attracted customers like

ducks to water. This in spite of the fact that its disadvantages far outweighed the advantages. There was no AC. The conveniences were most inconvenient. Today Bandra has a fancy Smoke House Deli.

In Yacht, you were always in real danger of being smoked out. While sitting at the tables, your feet would actually crunch the chicken bones callously tossed there by previous customers! There used to be regular dry days then. Yacht circumvented this problem by serving their regulars, beer in steel glasses. What steely resolve.

But then, Yacht was always a glass apart.

Did you know Yacht used to have a sugar cane (ganna) crushing machine?

That’s why it was such an endearing family restaurant. Along with the hard core alcoholics, teenagers with their crushes, children & women frequented Yacht to get their respective fixes. Those suffering from jaundice, would willy nilly rush to Yacht to get their dose of ganna juice. Unfortunately the ganna machine was discontinued.

Perhaps the cases of jaundice decreased so obviously the cases of beer increased!

Yacht is now going in for a makeover.

One of our pals took us on a virtual tour of the revamped Yacht. It looks swanky & chic. Even the name has been changed to Yacht Restobar. Well, well our staid Yacht has certainly raised the bar…..

It makes you more interesting: Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro, hot air ballooning in Cappadocia, crossing the Sahara desert, safari in Kenya, beach vacationing in the Caribbean or savoring on cheese and wine high up in the Alps. Bandra boys elected as Committee Members to the MDFA The Mumbai District Football Association is managed by the Executive Council consisting of a President, Chairman, 4 Vice Presidents, Hon. General Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, 4 Assistant Secretaries and 15 Committee Members. In addition to these, six members whose services would be beneficial to the Association, are also co-opted on the Executive Committee.

The MDFA concluded their elections for the Executive Council on 8th July 2017.

A total number of 155 representatives from football clubs, institutions & gymkhanas across Mumbai had cast their votes. The highlight of the evening was Aditya Thackeray who won the highest number of votes.

Bandra boys Ryan Menezes, Henry Picardo & Shodhana Shetty were elected to the Executive Committee. Ryan Menezes, the youngest candidate and the first ever lawyer to contest the elections secured 132 votes out of the 155 eligible club voters, thereby finishing 8th on the list of

37 candidates. Henry Picardo, representing local club Carmelites FC secured 131 votes and Shodhana Shetty representing Rhema Sports Club secured 120 votes.

Ryan Menezes: Advocate of Bombay High Court & son of Geoffrey Menezes - Former Vice President of BWFA and MDFA (upto last term), has been promoting football in Bandra West since the year 2006, under the brand name of Sellebrity FC, which is a club founded by his family. Sellebrity FC has been an extremely active team by participating in the BWFA Football league and has also organized U-20 Youth football leagues and open tournaments in Bandra.

For the past 8 years Mr. Menezes has been associated with the MDFA for various events. Last year, he was a Member of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the first International friendly match between India and Puerto Rico which was held at the Mumbai Football Arena, Mumbai.

Henry Picardo: Mr Picardo residing at Mount Mary Step, Bandra (W), was appointed Asst. Secretary to the MDFA. He has been a player for the Carmelites SC and Air India. Not only has he played for Maharashtra but has captain the team in 1997 as well and additionally has had the privilege of playing for India in 1998. Mr Picardo is the Co-Founder of the Bandra West League (BWFA) as well as the former manager of Mumbai FC - I-League.

Shodhana Shetty: Mr Shetty, who resides at Hill Road, Bandra, has been associated with MDFA since

the last 10 years and is the Current Hon. Treasurer of MDFA (2nd term). He also manages the Rhema Football Club and currently plays in the Super Division and 1st Division of the Mumbai Football League. He has been associated with the club for almost 25+ years. On a spiritual note he is also a Brother at the Bro Manuel ministries. If all this wasn’t a lot on his plate already, Mr Shetty also promotes a foundation, known as Rhema Foundation and runs a football/hockey turf ground at Vasai under the name of Rhema FC. Patriotism Personified Dear Reader, August augurs patriotism and the spirit of freedom. Freedom from the shackles, that have bound us through the centuries. Presently, it is freedom from an undeclared dictatorship, in its many recent forms. Bandra has always been the bedrock of activism. We will not tolerate injustice and most protest are held here, for the world to see. In India’s 70th year as an Independent nation, we need to turn back the hands of time and relive the active role of patriotic personalities from Bandra, who have been instrumental in retaining our independence.

This issue highlights some our war veterans from Bandra, who were actively involved in the Indo-Pakistan & Indo-Chinese wars.

While the tri-colour is held in high honour, with armed forces parades that portray the might of the army, navy & air force on Bandra’s main roads – we salute those who safeguard our borders, risking their lives, so that we can be safe. Yet, the irony is that we do not appreciate this enough.

At the moment, non-issues are the cause of killing innocent lives. Hidden agendas with satanic overtones are causing havoc.

In the name of development, irreversible damage to our precious environment is

shamelessly being sanctioned by those in power. The divide between the rich and the poor is deepening. Law & order is controlled by those with vested interest – and with mainstream media muffled, social media shows and tells the truth, in an un-biased manner (though, it may be manipulated, at times). The ground reality is that we all need to break the barriers that divide us, if we truly appreciate the sacrifice of our patriotic personalities – who help to keep the enemy at bay.

Over 3,000 attend Youth Icon Zahid Khan’s birthday celebration Dynamic, down-to-earth mass leader, social worker & youth icon Zahid Khan celebrated his birthday in a simple function organised by members of his ‘Swabhimaan Sangathna’ N.G.O. at J.J. Colony Masjid, near MTNL in Bandra, on 3rd August 2017.

More than 3,000 well wishers, including ex-MLA Baba Siddique attended.

CELEBRATION: Several friends, family and a host of other political party leaders wished him personally on his birthday and urged him to continue his good work of helping and serving people of all caste and creeds, throughout Bandra & surrounding suburbs. Zahid told us, “I have not invited so many people, but it is people’s love and affection and respect for the good work done by Swabhiman Sangathna; that they have come to wish me. I could have had a grand birthday celebration in a 5 star hotel or hall, but I wanted to be with my people - the common man; giving them the message that I am always available to them for any help any time.
