Many of our readers have called in and requested us to take up this issue, as they have been nearvictims of what could have been tragic mishaps.

The ‘Danger Point’ referred to in the header is the HP petrol pump at the signal of the S.V. Road and Linking Road junction, a very central spot in Bandra (West), where five roads fork at the signal. The petrol pump stands on a corner plot at this signal

between the road coming from South Mumbai (from Bandra Talao) and Turner Road (leading towards Carter Road).

The only official entrance for vehicles into this pump is on the road coming from South Mumbai, wherein vehicles need to rightfully enter to get petrol/diesel filled.

Once filled, the exit for these vehicles is on the Turner Road side of the pump, whereby vehicles need to exit the pump premises.

The above is the correct entry and exit procedure. But some vehicle-drivers who

are in a hurry, or who have made it a bad habit, prefer to take short-cuts and make their own rules. Many vehicles coming FROM Turner Road, who would otherwise have to get on to the road coming from South Mumbai to enter the pump, PREFER TO ENTER THE PUMP FROM THE EXIT OF THE PUMP ON TURNER ROAD. They do this by driving on the wrong side of the divider on the road and then entering the pump from what is official the exit.

Naturally this is extremely dangerous for pedestrians walking on that stretch of

the road near the pump’s exit, as they would not expect a vehicle to come from BEHIND them from the wrong side. It is also very dangerous for those vehicles exiting the pump or those vehicles taking the left turn from the South Mumbai road to come on to Turner Road, as none of them would be expecting a vehicle to be coming at them from the wrong side of the road.

Turning the clock back on age at LIBERarte Central We’ve all heard about forty being the new 20. But 60 being the new forty? Those who have been to LIBERarte Central - an academy for liberal and creative arts especially for the sexagenarians, septuagenarians and all those who feel way too old to get back their youthful zest – will tell you they feel as young as the tireless children in their neighbourhood.

It’s not uncommon abroad to see the older generation start ‘living’ their life at the age of sixty, but back here, most golden-agers usually spend their time at home, sometimes, just for the want of quality options outside of their boxes. With this in mind, Tehzeeb Doctor set out to change the way people live beyond their unvaried retired lives.

With classes based on different forms of art, craft, music, dance and even theatre, here, the prominence is about discovering and exploring one’s hidden talents, sharpening one's skills and living your dreams.

Take for instance the Tech Talk class – where you get that electronic gadget that perplexes you but your granddaughter uses like a pro. At this class, you get to learn things as simple, yet seemingly complicated, as paying your electricity bill over the internet, or downloading a photograph

from your email. In the language class, students learn to converse in a foreign language. Better yet is the water colour art class which everyone seems to enjoy. Pottery, craft, yoga, zumba, singing are a few of the sessions conducted here, not to forget the more intellectual ones like creative writing, psychology, fiction and dialogue for change. Most of all, it's a place to have fun while learning and interacting with different people having the same interests.

The most fulfilling part of the classes for Tehzeeb, who has been in the field of publishing since getting out of college, is to see the joy on the faces of her students when they master the art. For her, living is learning. "It's never too late to learn something you've always wanted to but never had the time or direction. I believe that when it comes to learning, you're always young, age is just a number. Growing older is about growing wiser," says Tehzeeb, who has herself learnt so much from her students. She says it's both, fascinating and enlightening to see an eighty-eight year old woman share her experiences, come to class with such determination and show her passion for life. Another who thought her French wasn't up to the mark started conversing with the instructor at the

TechTalk session in French. Such is the enthusiasm and excitement at the classes here, it's like rediscovering the meaning of life. While this is just the beginning, in the near future Tehzeeb hopes to do more to help these elders get back their zest for life.

"After all," she says, "someday we are all going to get old." LIBERarte Central, in

short, is a place for the older generation to grow younger.

If given the opportunity, what changes would you like to make in Bandra?

I will restore Bandra back to its former glory. My top priority will be to work closely with the residents of Bandra and devise a mechanism for the easy disposal of wet and dry garbage. I will fearlessly go after the land mafia and land sharks if they break the law. I will work in tandem with the police department to ease the traffic congestion on the streets of Bandra. I will ensure pedestrian safety and security. I will take legal action against the illegal hawkers and work to reclaim our footpaths. And last but not the least, these days I have been noticing many anti-social elements in and around our suburb and if given the power I will assure you that I will send them all behind the bars.

Bandra’s Favourite “Peter Boy” Passes Away Those Bandraites who are 50+ today, will remember Peter Remedios - a simple boy from St. Peter’s Colony, M.G. Road; who was one of Bandra’s most loved character in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. He was fondly known as “Peter Boy”. A favourite among elderly aunts and uncles, he was welcome at anytime; to almost everybody’s home in and around Bandra. And wonder of wonders, he knew almost everyone in the neighbourhood by their first name – their birthday, anniversaries, what they did; and more importantly ‘juicy gossip’, that all just wanted to know.

Peter was a ‘walking talking local newspaper’ of an earlier era.

Yet, many took advantage of his simple ways. Street urchins would sometimes beat him badly on the streets of Bandra.

Certain people would use him to know what is happening in their opponent’s house. He was at the receiving end of jokes. Being simple-minded, he was oblivious to the intrigue and cunning of his friends – and took everything in his stride.

When his health deteriorated, he was kept

in a ‘home’, to live peacefully. Peter died on 28th February 2016, in Virar and was interred the same day. Surely, he is now with the angels in heaven.

St. Andrew’s Church challenges you to experience, “The Mass Effect” The Parish of St. Andrew’s Church in Bandra is celebrating its 400th anniversary. And what better way to celebrate this historic milestone than with the sacrifice of the eucharist. Accordingly, the parishioners of St. Andrew’s challenge one and all to experience, “The Mass Effect”.

This vibrant celebration of mass is being held at Mt. Mary’s Basilica grounds at 7.00 pm on Saturday, April 23rd, 2016. The mass will be followed by an evening of fellowship accompanied by performances of gospel music by artists from across the city including Vivienne Pocha, Suzanne D’Mello, Samantha Edwards, Rohan Mazumdar, Raaga Trippin and others.

This one-of-a-kind celebration is an attempt to encourage

people, especially the youth, to ‘encounter’ the mass in a language and a way that they connect with. Without deviating from the sanctity of the sacrifice of the mass, the team at St. Andrew’s wish to drive home the message that the mass if truly experienced is a privilege rather than an obligation.

The mass will be celebrated in asetting that is contemporary and inviting. Music, praise and worship are integral to how the mass will be communicated and celebrated. Luke Coutinho: Any disease can be cured with a strong immunity “Cancer, diabetes or cardiovascular - Any disease can be cured with a strong immunity… If your immunity is strong then it can fight the worst diseases,” claims Luke. A Holistic Nutritionist by profession, Luke Coutinho has studied Integrated Medicine specialising in cancer and diabetes and thus treats patients in a holistic approach to various diseases. In short, Luke treats and advises patients without just chemical medicines but with an overall approach.

“I am not saying don’t take medicines but along with medicines take proper diet, natural treatments and proper exercise that will help you heal faster and reduce the side effects of medicines,” highlights Luke.

Luke is not against medicine, CT scans, MRI's or chemo, but he's against the fact that its just handed out like candy without educating or treating the patient to manage the collateral damage caused by side effects.

Luke believes that we are too dependent on doctors and medicines; we completely give our lives into their hands and do nothing on our part to keep our immunity strong. “If you think you can get well then you will get well soon. It depends on your will power and willingness to fight the disease, live and improve your whole being,” highlights Luke. Most of the diseases are due to weak thought processes and ‘Give up’ easily attitude. Therefore, think strong so that you feel strong and ultimately live strong.

Doctors, hospitals and medical treatments today have become a big business.

Doctors are totally dependent on tests and reports and are not willing to even understand what the patient is going through or rather why the patient is suffering.

He says, "Health has become a business, patients have becomes numbers to

the medical and pharma world...we need to bring the' human' element back into our healing and treatment and that happens in a holistic integrative model of healing.

Compassion, patience and kindness are the true healing medicines."

As far as Luke’s treatment is concerned, he has been treating patients for over years and follows a golden rule of treating patients on a one on one daily basis. He interacts and gets to know the patient on a personal level and becomes a part of his/her life practically by getting involved every day.

“In my first meeting, I just try to understand the patient and make him/her feel comfortable by talking to them causally in a chilled out place like a café or restaurant.

While talking, I understand the patient and try to detect where the problem actually lies. And, once I detect the problem then I start treating it holistically,” explains Luke.

According to studies, most of the breast cancers in women are due to emotional stress and feeling of being suppressed in their family, personal, professional or social life. Some of the cardiovascular diseases are due to tension thus finding out the root cause of the problem is very important.

He feels, “I can’t tell you what to do. For if I tell you - don’t eat this or don’t drink that - then probably you will just give up on my treatment someday.” Therefore, Luke gives the freedom to his every patient and understands their lifestyle. But, he tells them

to add few things in their lifestyle in a very subtle friendly way so that their health is balanced and immunity nurtured.

For example, he explains, “If you feel like having a coke, I will not stop you but I will tell you to have a fresh lime soda after the coke to balance the acid content in your body due to the coke with the alkaline of the lime soda. If you feel like eating a pizza, go ahead and eat it but just grab a salad with it to balance the cholesterol content.” Therefore you need to cooperate and follow his treatment sincerely.

That’s how holistic Luke’s treatment is and thus he never prescribes any chemical medicines himself but tries to cure you naturally as much as he can. “In holistic treatment, we use all kinds of measures like chemical medicines and treatments along with natural food, organic diet, physical exercise, yoga, counseling, guidance by a spiritual or psychological leader or anything that the patient needs. So, everything is put together just to make the patient strong and able to fight the disease,” explains Luke.

Monetary wise, holistic treatment works in similar terms or probably less than chemical treatments for the root cause is detected here rather than just continuous tests, radiations, X-rays and temporary chemical drugs being prescribed.

Luke has also written and published a book along with Bollywood personality Shilpa Shetty named ‘The Great Indian

Diet’ to create awareness about holistic treatment, make people health conscious and help make their immunity strong naturally. He has also earlier written a book named ‘Eat Smart, Move More, Sleep Right - Your Personal Health Coach’ which helps people to live a healthy and balanced life with a strong immune system to fight various diseases.

Creating awareness and helping people build their immunity is Luke Coutinho’s only aim. When the law makers and authorities don’t work effectively, the common man has to take the baton in his hand this is what exactly happened recently at Chimbai Beach near St. Andrew’s Church at Bandra. On the morning of Holy Saturday March 26, 2016 around 600 local people gathered & cleaned the Chimbai beach with the help of the BMC. The BMC helped in this initiative but didn’t ‘initiate’ this drive itself. The drive was initiated by the Fr. Magi Murzello who is the Parish priest of St. Andrew’s Church, and the BMC helped by extending its support.

“The authorities both the BMC concerned government haven’t cleaned the beach since 2013 so we had to do it ourselves. A ramp has been built for the garbage trucks to go to the beach and collect the filth but the authorities have been sleeping over the cleanliness of the beach and the ramp has not been used. Despite of our several

constant appeals there has not been a single help or sign of interest from any official body in these 2 years,” cried out the locals of Chimbai village who participated in this drive.

It is a shame to the concerned authorities and the government that school children, young boys and girls, middle aged women, men, weak and weary senior citizens came out in the sun on Saturday and cleaned the beach with their own hands. Roystin Misquitta, a resident of Chimbai village who was present during the cleanliness drive, agitated, “The people who cleaned the beach that day included everyone right from a school going kid in his uniform to an old uncle participating in the initiative from 8am to 11 am with hand gloves picking all the garbage with their own hands.” Damian Cabral, who participated actively in this cleanup initiative, added, “Priests, nuns, parishioners of St. Andrew’s Church, school

kids, locals and Chimbai villagers came out of their way to help in this drive. The whole drive was planned with a view to curb pollution and thus it involved the parishioners to take the lead. The BMC went a step ahead to help lift the garbage.”

Fr. Magi along with his social outreach team called ‘Mission Sunshine’ initiated this idea of cleaning the beach on the account of it being Holy Week and serving the mother nature. Few officials from the BMC cooperated and extended their help by lending 2 dumpers and one bulldozer to pick up the garbage and take it away for disposal.

“Just 2 dumpers to carry tones of garbage are not sufficient at all. Around 800 bags of garbage were collected and there were just 2 dumpers,” explains Roystin. Brian Dharmai, a resident of Chimbai, added, “Moreover, one dumper came in the morning and left in just an hour or so while the other one came in

later. What is the use of sending just 2 dumpers for such short period of time to clean such a huge beach? If there would be more dumpers which could have stayed longer, then more garbage could have been collected once and for all.”

Karen D’mello, the Municipal Corporator H West ward, who played a major role in this cleanup initiative said, “Around 800 garbage bags were collected and 2 dumpers were sufficient to collect those many bags. The BMC cooperated well with us to carry out this cleanliness drive. However, ‘Comprehensive Cleaning’ but be carried out at Chimbai beach & comprehensive funds should be allocated for the cleaning of the beach.”

Secondly, isn’t maintaining cleanliness the job of the BMC and the government?

The officials need to wake up & realise their responsibility.”

“Why isn’t the BMC focusing on cleaning of the Chimbai beach? Why are they sleeping over it since years? It has been reported in the media that Chimbai beach is one of the dirtiest beach of Mumbai so shouldn’t steps be taken to clean it? Why is nothing being done inspite of it being reported?,” expressed Freddie Divecha, a resident of Chimbai.

“During elections, the officials come asking for votes and carry out various initiatives at Chimbai then why do they disappear once

elections are over? Are the officials too lazy, sleeping over the issue or probably just ignoring this part of Bandra because it falls on the interior side, has no celebrity staying in the vicinity or is not as famous as a Bandstand and Carter Road? If so much of cleanliness can be maintained at Bandstand and Carter Road and garbage is strictly prohibited there then why can a little cleanliness be done at Chimbai?,” expressed the agitated locals of Chimbai.

Daven Kandoria, Vice President (Mumbai) of The National Association of Fishermen who resides at Chimbai said, “Our main concern is cleaning of the Chimbai beach. It does not matter to us who does it or which political party takes the initiative. We just need the beach to be cleaned by the concerned officials so that we can stay in a healthy and safe environment. Regular cleanups and follow-ups should be done,

garbage bins should be allocated at Chimbai village and constant checkups of cleanliness will help solve our problem.”

The Chimbai beach, which stretches across an area of around 1 km of a vast seashore with more than 100 houses by it, is filled with garbage which is almost 4 feet deep. According to our earlier report in Bandra Buzz, the beach was cleaned last in 2013 after that not a single cleanliness drive has been done. The beach has become a major breeding ground for mosquitoes, unhygienic conditions is causing various diseases to children and senior citizens, the fisher folk business is affected due to this dirty quality of water and the whole beauty of the beach has vanished.

This cleanliness initiative of the church helped in cleaning 10 per cent of the waste collected at the entire beach. But, there was no follow-up on the following Monday

March 28, 2016 or any other day after that on the beach cleanup issue though an official follow-up was promised by the authorities.

Despite of such difficult conditions, ‘The Power of Common Man’ has awakened and taken the lead to do the job what the BMC and government are supposed to do. “It is a ‘success failure’. For though we all helped in cleaning the beach in the church’s initiative and we succeeded in cleaning the beach, the authorities have failed to do the same,” claimed Roystin.

It is a simple question that the residents of Chimbai are claiming – ‘Why is the Chimbai beach not being cleaned? What are the authorities doing?’ All that they are asking is for - Cleanliness of the beach, of their ancestral home environment, of the most beautiful heritage of the Queen of suburb-Bandra; is that too much to ask for?

Empowering Young Girls across Mumbai through Football Mumbai United aka M United is a Bandra based women’s football club, which is unofficially one of the best team in Mumbai.

It was founded in 2014 by Mayur Ghosalkar (former Bandra footballer who has helped form a few football and hockey clubs) and Manuel D’Souza (Director at M United & former Mumbai F.C. player) who uses his experience to manage the team.

"M-United is a non-profit organization and we run free coaching camps for girls who are interested in football even if they are a part of the team or not. Our motto is to not only to make better footballers in India but also better human beings and contribute towards women empowerment process of the nation.", say Manuel & Mayur of M United.

M United consists of players between 11 to 21 year olds travelling all the way from distant places like Ambernath and Vashi;

infact Surbhi (club captain) comes all the way from Ambernath. Abeer (senior player), shared her thoughts about the club saying, “We are very close, our bond is very strong both on and off the field, our coaches have given us the best training ever possible and we do not play to win or lose but to enjoy the game.”

When asked about the problems faced by the club and its players, they said, "We are suffering from lack of sponsors."

M United claim to give travel allowances to their players from their pockets and also fund players kit for those who can’t afford it.

As a parallel example, the pump attendants are very particular about ensuring that vehicle-drivers who request for petrol/diesel to be filled in plastic cans are refused according to the rules. This is

highly appreciated as such rules have been framed for the good of the law-abiding citizens. But our contention is, if the petrol pump attendants (obviously under instructions from the pump management) can be so vigilant and dedicated when it comes to adopting this rule of not filling petrol/diesel in cans, why can they not be equally vigilant and strict in identifying and refusing to fill petrol/diesel for vehicles which enter the pump from the wrong side?

We met the petrol pump shift captain Mr. Uday Rane in this regard over a week

ago. While he appreciated our concern and mentioned that the suggestion of strictly monitoring the exit is a very good one, little or no sign of any action in this matter is visible. Pump attendants can still be seen standing chatting in a group, but not bothering to stop vehicles entering from the wrong side, nor refusing to fill petrol/diesel in such vehicles.

If the pump management strictly instructs its attendants & security men to identify the vehicles wrongly entering from the exit, refusing to let them enter, or

even if they do get past & enter, refusing to fill petrol/diesel in such vehicles, the problem of vehicles coming from the wrong side of the divider would be greatly reduced.

Hoping that the concerned authorities view this seriously, as any negative incident occurring due to the observations noted here would bring negative publicity to one of the most renowned brands in the country today – Hindustan Petroleum.

Letters to the Editor WHY HILL ROAD TOPS TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN BANDRA In the 2nd fortnightly March edition 'Why Hill Road tops traffic congestion in Bandra' was well written and informative, specially for residents in that vicinity, who are practically fed up with traffic, hawkers, beggars and pollution.

There is absolutely no regard to the welfare of people, who have to struggle to walk and shop in peace. The most dangerous aspect of this sorry state of affairs is the possibility of being knocked down by vehicular traffic. And due to this a person is immensely stressed because there is no safety. Our minds are disturbed with anxiety and sadness.

Whatever enforcement is there from the authorities, is only a temporary relief on some days when the BMC & the police do their duty of clearing the road of hawkers and illegal parking. Somehow we observe that inspite of all this there is no permanent solution.

Walking each day on Hill Road is a nightmare, yet it looks like the authorities do not seem to bother.

An ex-MLA had suggested or proposed extension of the skywalk, but that did not materialise because waiting for road widening would take a long time, perhaps even stretch to decades. Another thing is if the skywalk is built, it will encourage more hawkers and beggars to make use of the added space.

The only way to decongest Hill Road, is to enforce strict regulations for traffic control and reduce hawkers from 5-9pm each day. This way the residents and shoppers will be content with ease of movement. But this requires cooperation of the BMC and the traffic police.

Hill Road has been a much debatable topic with no solution and continuing inconvenience to pedestrians.

Hill Road is an arterial link between Bandra Railway station and Mt. Mary Hill and Band Stand, it was never intended as a shopping plaza. Today, it is lined with eateries and clothing shops with hardly any parking areas – all in the section between the Bata showroom and St. Peter’s Road. Cars are parked at owner’s convenience unattended and haphazardly, to add to the woes of pedestrians are the arrogant hawkers with the patronage of the elected representatives, and anything and everything is available on the pavements.

These hawkers occupy the entire pavement, dig up the paver blocks and leave plastic sheets and other garbage for the BMC’s conservancy staff to clear next morning. They are a law unto themselves, keep their ware on parked two-wheelers, and in case of a raid push their hanger

carts helter skelter regardless of hapless pedestrians.

Even the number of two-wheelers on this road has risen with the result that they park on the side lanes like Chinchpokli and Boran Roads leaving less than half the road space for other road users.

They don’t even bother about helmets, and often three/four are on a vehicle meant for two.

The situation can improve only with greater vigilance and elimination of the dreaded pavement hawkers. Will that dream ever be realized?

STRINGENT ACTION REQUIRED AGAINST UNDERAGE MOTORISTS The number of underage motorists who do not hold a valid driving license has increased significantly. It seems like the parents of these underage motorists are encouraging them to drive/ride a motor vehicle. Most of these underage drivers drive/ride very rashly, roughly and negligently which in turn is posing a big threat to pedestrians and fellow motorists. They are noted to drive/ride in narrow lanes and also in one way lanes especially Bazar Road and Chapel Road due to no deployment of law enforcement authorities on these roads. It seems that they have no fear of the law and when someone has no fear of the law, you can't expect that person to fear for his/her life and well-being or another person's life and well-being. I request the concerned authorities to take stringent action against underage motorists as it is a threat to pedestrians as well as fellow motorists.

Adnan Mookhtiar WATER WASTAGE In spite of BMC warning not to waste water during the Holi celebrations, there was wide spread pilferage particularly in slum areas. The BMC has also started a drive to curb free supply by disconnecting those places who are grossly in arrears. These connections were allotted at the behest of previous corporators just so they could get votes. Yet all said and done, it is good that BMC is now taking action, so that free supply is no more tolerated. However on Holi Day there were no enforcement officials from the BMC to check the waste of water, specially in the slum areas.

SUMMER WINE Dear Reader, Alas, April has arrived – with clear blue skies, starting summer. Temperatures are touching new unbearable highs. This is the time for finalising picnics and short vacations with family and friends to cooler climes around the city – Panvel, Gorai, Matheran, Mahableshwar or Lonavala. Those who prefer the sea surf ‘n’ sand go to destinations like Alibag, Daman or Goa. It is fun, frolic and freedom from our boring routine lifestyle.

Yet, many make-do with local locations.

Just by travelling a few minutes, we can change our surroundings dramatically – and at minimum cost. Bandra is unique, wherein the ambience of every street is radically different. We have modern malls, sophisticated hi-rise towers and plenty of parks – and yes, our three sea-touch promenades. You can walk along picture-perfect cottages and one moment – and a slight detour can lead to a quaint fishing village, complete with all that a sea shore offers.

The sights, smell and sounds get our senses into ‘vacation mode’. And at some point in time, the local grapevine seeps into our

passionate conversation. Since we know our local characters, all this seems more interesting, especially when food and beverages are included in the menu. Yes, our local characters include social activists, politicians, service-providers, police – the local area goons. Prinz Medical commences 50 year milestone It was on 2nd April 1967, that historic day - 49 years ago; that Prinz Medical put up their board, opened their shutters, spread the WELCOME MAT (the first of many times) and waited, with big smiles and hopeful hearts for friends who would be their “first-day customers”. Slowly, yet steadily many of us, our parents, grand-parents, family or friends - trooped in with our doctor’s prescription and trooped out with our medicines and a cheery thought.

Even today, Prinz Medical can proudly say, “We Serve with a Smile.”

Co-Founders Lakhamsi Shah & Nanji Shah, were as humble as ever; when they told us, “Today, we naturally think back to the early days and review the long trail of 49 years during which we measured our success – not by the volume of our profits, but by the degree of satisfaction we gave to our dear customers. And at the start of our grand 50th year in Bandra, we reminisce with one specific intent: To re-dedicate ourselves to our principles and to our clients.” Lakhamsi Shah's son Jayantilal Shah added, “ Our exclusive range of cosmetics in the shop is attracting a lot of customers, as our young third generation family members take a lot of interest to promote them.” This is a happening medical shop – where customer satisfaction is ensured. Mr. Chandrakant Furia has been helping to manage the medical division of Prinz Medical for the past 38 years.
