Around 100+ members gather every morning at 6.30 am at The Laughter’s Club near Joggers Park

Laugh Till It Doesn’t Hurt With The Laughters Club! A day without laughter is surely a day wasted. This holds particularly true for the renowned Laughter’s Club, near Joggers Park. It opens at 6.30 am every morning, with various exercises and different types of stretches, which has helped numerous people and especially proved beneficial for one of the members, who is truly grateful that she now experiences less pain in her knees. The members who belong to different faiths then recite a prayer together, asking to be filled with joy and in turn spreading smiles, generously. Like the words of the prayer, they too concentrate on the essence of humanity, through reaching out in love to each other. After praying, a new member is greeted by an interesting blend of laughter and high-fives! “The Club is a happy home for many of its members”, says Maheshwari, one of the

organisers. It has completed 21 years, since its inauguration on 26th January 1999 and the number is still in counting... The birthdays and anniversaries are always celebrated. This makes no one feel left out. Members don’t necessarily stay close but continue to look forward to meeting one another and catching up. To be a member of the Club, it is absolutely free but attendance is important. Once you regularly attend for a period of 3 months, you are eligible to be one of the members. While interacting with them, an 89-yearold gentleman named Lakhan makes an introduction. He proudly held his own bookstore in his former days. He is the centre of attention in the Club and undoubtedly knows how to make an impression, by lovingly calling out to his wife with the nickname, ‘’darling’’. He shared an almond with

me, along with a smile! When he was admitted in hospital earlier, his two strong pillars were his wife and the Club. He would not be as healthy today if it were not for the efforts of his “darling” wife and the Laughters Club. Later in the morning, the members enjoyed a warm cup of herbal tea. It delighted me to see how they sincerely care for one another. On my way to taking a cup for Lakhan, another gentleman by the name of Manu remarks to check for salt as it could really trouble someone with high blood pressure. In this way, they certainly are like one family. You will like to know about other events of the Club. It is an opportunity to unveil their moments of happiness, sadness, griefs and have casual conversations. They excitedly share their professional accomplishments and the news about the birth of a new

grandchild. The members even find ears to listen to in each another, at their hour of need. However, they ensure to overcome such times together. The Club organises fun picnics to Mahableshwar, etc. At present, the members are as large as 130-150 people who come every day to create a happier space in their lives. If not, at least a better start to the day. Individuals like the lady who had knee problems or Lakhan, with heart problems, asthma and other respiratory diseases have found quiet and happiness. The Laughters Club is growing in its success of finding a bigger member base as well as spreading joy with others outside. Here, there’s no time for worries or sorrow, just pure joy and togetherness... When are we seeing you? Anushka Dutt Pic Courtesy: Josh Photography

Apostolic Carmel High School Class of 1970 holds 50-year reunion

Apostolic Carmel High School Class of 1970 January 11, 2020, was a memorable day for the Alumni of the batch of 1970 of the Apostolic Carmel High School, Bandra. The golden girls kickstarted their celebrations for their 50-year reunion with great gusto. The class of 1970 was filled with nostalgia as they visited the school to offer prayers & gratitude on the morning of January 11, 2020. As the vision of the school is deep-rooted in prayer, the morning began with a Eucharistic celebration by Father Anthony. Interfaith prayers from five prominent religions were recited for an inclusive approach & strengthening unity among diversity. It was an overwhelming & emotional experience especially for those meeting after 50 years to be present in the very same school hall

where they used to assemble every morning as children & young teenagers. They all sang the school anthem “A Happy Band” joyfully and enthusiastically. These ageless beauties got together, some flew in from Austria, Australia, USA, Canada, as well as other Indian cities to join their classmates from Mumbai & be part of the milestone event. “Bonding with everyone after so many years brought back so many wonderful memories,” said Trudy-Ann from Australia & her sentiment was echoed by all. After the prayerful start & capturing of precious memories on camera in the school campus, the joyous gang moved to Executive Enclave hotel Bandra for a fun-filled

Savio Fonseca, the son of one of the classmates Fatima from Mumbai, ably & enthusiastically compered the event. There were fun games, quizzes, mimicry, dance performances, and loads of entertainment throughout the day. Gauri Nair left everyone enthralled with her graceful Bharatnatyam performance. Rita Arsiwala’s mesmerizing voice reverberated through the venue as she sang old Hindi numbers. To mark the golden jubilee event, a commemorative souvenir book, compiled & presented with the dedication of many, containing photographs & a writeup about each

classmate was released. Not only did everyone leave with a bag full of goodies, but they also took with them precious memories to warm their hearts forever. The celebrations continued for a week at get-togethers hosted by classmates at their homes. This short reunion writeup is only a cameo of the efforts, involvement & emotions of the participants. The high school reunion gave everyone a precious and priceless piece of the past back. From Spring to Summer Dear Reader, February finds us searching for new ways to continue what we started in January – as part of our New Year Resolutions. The short spell of spring, we witness here is a welcome interlude from the cold – blending into a comfortable temperature – that spurs our thought process towards newer avenues. Here in Bandra and other cultural hubs, celebrations culminate with the ‘Carnival’, after spending a romantic ‘Valentine Day’ – all at a venue of our choice. This is also the time to start our ‘detox’. The ‘detox’ process of our mind, body & soul is best started now. With an overdose of events from Diwali to Halloween, Christmas to New Year and Republic Day till Carnival; it’s time to take a break – and start

to detox, so that we are renewed. Maybe a short holiday in the hills would help. 2020 holds a lot of hope for a better future and we need to be healthy & wealthy to enjoy our precious lives. With recent rumblings, both national & international; many issues are coming to a boil – and we all need to take a stand. On the local front too, Bandra, Khar & Santa Cruz has several issues, that have diverse views to them. Your favourite neighbourhood newspaper – Bandra Buzz is your local platform to highlight your views, regarding what’s happening around you. Your interaction is important to the vitality of your immediate locality. Spring in Bandra Living in Bandra, I think most of us are accustomed to slushy monsoons, overbearing summers, and the occasional very cold winters. But, now we are embarking on my favourite time of the year: Spring, a perfect amalgam of weather and greenery. The cool temperature sets the stage for perfect conditions – with clear blue skies. The dates for spring may vary but usually spans for about one or two months anytime from February to April. Even though you may feel the atmosphere warming up, spring is expected to commence in mid-February and end in midApril, in the northern hemisphere. Also

known as ‘Vasant Ritu’, Spring is considered by many as the most beautiful season in the country. It usually sees an average temperature of about 28°C. The season symbolizes positivity and is often depicted as the season of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection and re-growth – all part of ‘new life experience’. Being one of the most exciting places to live in, something is happening every day. With a plethora of events opening up in Bandra, there is no other time like the present to get out and enjoy life. With a simple Google search of “events in Bandra”, I was able to find music festivals, food

festivals, stand-up comedy shows, food festivals and a slew of other fun stuff to do. If you would rather take the solitary approach to enjoy spring, you can try getting a few workouts at ‘Jogger’s Park’, or maybe a long walk on the Reclamation, Bandstand or Carter Promenades; while soaking in the naturally majestic scenery of blooming flowers and other greenery in their heyday. This is nature, at her best. The transition between winter and summer comes only once a year - so try to enjoy it to the fullest, while it lasts. Ryan Rodrigues

Does Mumbai need a ‘Kejriwal’?

After resounding victory of AAP in Delhi people are wondering, why they can’t have a ‘Kejriwal’ as a CM, whose style of governance is a hit with voters? His idea of offering ‘freebies’ to Delhites may sound like vote-catching schemes, but the magic worked & they voted for him in hordes, totally ignoring the manifesto of two other national parties in the fray, whose election plank was centered on national issues like Ram Mandir, Article 370 & CAA. How foolish & how brainless can one get? Hard lessons are never learnt. Talk about bread & butter issues, roti, kapda, makaan & naukri. Even Shaheen Baug which became another election gimmick to embarrass the Ruling Party took a back seat in trying to polarise voters. Back here in Maharashtra, the scale of AAP’s victory has had a mesmerizing effect on its electorate when few members of the MVA government wanting to offer free 100 units of electricity to each household like in Delhi. But that proposal was shot down immediately by Dy CM who holds the Finance portfolio. How can Maharashtra give you anything free, when they want it for themselves? The same Minister has more than 2000 cases pending in CBI courts on Irrigation scam when he was in charge of Agriculture, in another coalition government, not long ago. Politics is a dangerous game, fit only for crooks. Delhi is not Maharashtra, nor can you compare it with any state under the Union, where dynamics of geography, economics & empowerment play stellar roles. Delhi has 70 assembly seats while Maharashtra has 280. That in itself is a major difference. The police in Delhi are under control of Union Home Ministry & municipality managed currently by the Ruling Party. What is left is education, healthcare & transport, sectors for Delhi CM to monitor. Delhi does not have a vast rural popu-

lation like other states in India. More than 90% of the rural population in India is living on handouts, underdeveloped & struggling with grants & subsidies for sustenance. If it is not the drought, it is floods or disease that makes living unbearable & extremely difficult to govern with poor lopsided infrastructure. The PM says at a rally that only 1.5 crore Indians pay income tax out of a population of 130 Crore. He is probably not aware what Mahua Moitra, TMC MP from West Bengal has revealed of 28 high personality Nationalist Indian Businessmen with names like Lalit Modi, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi who have evaded paying income tax-totally amounting to Ten Trillion Indian Rupees. Only one on that list - Vijay Mallaya is from Karnataka State & the rest are all from Gujarat. Not one of them is a Pakistani, Muslim, Urban Naxal or Terrorist. This is the report card of the same party that promised in 2014 to eradicate corruption, bring back all the black money hidden in overseas banks. Not a single person has been brought back to India to face charges of ill-gotten wealth, nor has even a single rupee of the loot returned to our shores. Welcome - to India’s great democracy. American President is to visit India on 23rd/24th February. His motorcade will pass by slums of Ahmedabad. A 22Km wall is built to mask slums, painted with Go Green slogans, costing Crores of Rupees to the taxpayer. The idea is to showcase India as a rich & clean country. PM does not want Trump to see those slums or even smell it. On 17th February Ahmedabad Municipality issued eviction notices to slum dwellers living there for more than 30 years. Instead of building a wall, PM should provide proper housing for the poor. At least he will be blessed for one good deed. Amar Singh

The Victory of AAP in Delhi & Voice of the Urban Voter

Many urban citizens were not surprised about the victory of Aam Aadmi Party in the recent Delhi elections. The incumbents came back with all might, bagging 62 seats out of the 70 seats in Delhi Assembly. It also showed the decimation of the grand old party of India and a strong competition by BJP to the AAP. So, what is that led to the victory of AAP in Delhi? Is it the frustration of the middle class against the constant diatribe based on our enemies which is devoid of the mention of development? Did the high price of onions also play a major role in swinging votes? With the nation facing high rates of inflation and unemployment coupled with rising pollution in the national capital, citizens are looking for new political options and solutions. With INC losing its ground among the middle class and rural voters, owing to the political elitism it upheld for decades, the middle class might be in the lookout for new alternatives. The urban middle class is looking for tangible development and not just false promises of progress. As the country is growing and getting more urbanized, citizens are getting more informed in this knowledge era. A closer look at many states and regions in the country highlights the lack of effective political leadership. From rural areas to cities, we have a dearth of good leadership in political circles. India still finds it difficult to move beyond family politics and the culture where wealth makes one a political candidate. It was the rise of a leader or a cohort of leaders that helped AAP in addition to the strong conviction in democracy, justice and development as well as adherence to values of positive nationalism. But can it alone explicate the victory of AAP? Is it also due to the rise of the urban Indian middle

class in wielding political power? This heralds a quest for change among the Indian population. The victory of AAP throws light on a lot of interesting political debates and lessons for established political parties. Can it, however, be translated to change in rural India as well? Few of our readers have interesting points to highlight in this regard. A 24-yearold Engineering professional from Bandra who wish to remain anonymous points out that, “I think AAP winning is Delhi speaks volumes about how the voting population now is moving towards an anti-hate political agenda. Especially given the current situations and the uproar we have seen on the media and unrest among the youth, this creates a new wave of politics”. Another anonymous reader who is a retired teacher aged 66 highlighted that the ‘middle class after getting disillusioned with the economic conditions as well as the changing social fabric of our cities, might have led to vote for alternatives to age-old political traditions’. The victory shows that it is possible to bring about change in our age-old political leanings and leaderships. We also need more young leaders and representatives from all walks of life. People with experience in private and public sector are needed, it should no more be the turf for rich and the kin from political families. Vibrance, diversity and gender parity are needed in our political circles. Women and the youth should not shy away from politics as the decisions taken will impact everyone. We should imbibe that it is the responsibility of every citizen to ensure progress while upholding democratic values. Jessica Bernard

Let’s make pregnancy an enriching and smooth experience, says Dr Rita Shah I strive to make pregnancy a beautiful & enriching experience for both the mother & father to be, says Dr Rita Shah, a certified Lamaze Consultant who conducts classes for prenatal & postnatal care. Shah has helped many pregnant women from various countries in the last three decades to have a comfortable pregnancy & a cherished birth experience. Nine Months is a comprehensive prenatal programme for expectant mothers started by Dr Shah to empower women during the birth of their baby by reducing their fears & instilling confidence. It is purely based on exercise, education & guidance. Dr Shah says, “Pregnancy is a crucial period for a woman & specific exercises, Lamaze breathing techniques, postures & education about changes in the body will help her to deal with it effectively. Even high-risk pregnancies can benefit from this programme. The programme focuses on dealing with both physical, psychological & emotional ups & downs experienced by pregnant women. Shah says, “The body of a woman goes through several changes like weight gain, back pain, breathlessness, cramps, nausea & tiredness. Also, women go through mood swings, hormonal imbalance, phases of depression, fatigue, irritation & overthinking. If women are made aware and proper remedies given to

these discomforts, they are able to deal with them effectively. Her husband is an equal parent to the baby, hence guiding him to be a perfect coach & support person in pregnancy & childbirth is the highlight of the labour class. Fathers are welcome in all the sessions, but labour session attendance is a must. The classes generally begin after the first 16 to 18 weeks of pregnancy & go on till the end of pregnancy. Shah adds, “I prepare & inspire women to have confidence in their ability to give birth. Understanding the benefits of breastfeeding, every Nine Months mother is empowered to exclusively breastfeed her baby. The paediatric session gives her the confidence to handle the challenges of taking care of a newborn baby. She is also informed about the post-delivery changes, which helps her to attain normalcy as quick as possible. Shah’s classes are economical & a onestop solution. Often both women & men panic when they are aware of pregnancy & look for a zillion sources, books & magazines for help. Sona Mazumdar, a student of Nine Months Pregnancy testifies, “I have a very demanding job with long hours which takes a

toll on the body physically. But her classes have proved to be a combination of practical and theoretical training which has made my experience enriching.” While Bhavna Udani, another student, says, “I had the perfect pregnancy one could have. No morning sickness, no swelling & no aches.” Dr Shah encourages all pregnant women & their partners to take pregnancy seriously and has now started online classes for the same. Shah says, “The online classes comprise of personal tutorials and education. I also share video materials with my students who do not have the time to attend a class or are on total bed rest due to a high-risk pregnancy or are living outside of Mumbai. Nine Months program is very safe, and is individualized and carefully constructed to ease the discomforts and erase the fears associated with pregnancy and childbirth.

Love Is More Than A Feeling When the rush of emotion fades and reality kicks in, love steps up and becomes so much more than what is portrayed in the movies. However, come Valentine’s Day, the rosiness finds its way back and the air begins to feel all mushy. Whether you like grand gestures or prefer to spend a quiet romantic evening, there’s no one size fits all when it comes to showing your love on this day. This year, we got in touch with a few couples and asked them what love means to them and how they celebrated V-Day. Varuna D’souza tells us, “My husband and I completed a dozen this February. It was our anniversary on the 2nd of February. I guess the definition of love has kept changing or you can say we have kept evolving as a couple especially when involves a child. Love is more of a soul connection than just materialistic things. It doesn’t mean we don’t get gifts for each other but if he’s travelling on work or if we need to take care of our little one and can’t go out on a dinner date...it’s no big deal. As a couple having gazillion arguments, fights, bad days, you still can’t visualize yourself without that person. That’s love for me.” She goes on to tell us, “Valentine’s Day is any other day for me. Well if we are together that day and my husband is not travelling, spending time together anywhere

In a span of two weeks the giant HEPA-filter lungs installed outside R.D. National College changed its colour from chalk white to black ‘A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words’, therefore this is going to be a short article; thereafter which we urge you to visit National college, in order to witness the reality of the above-mentioned adage. The experience that awaits you there is indeed jolting in nature, none the less, the projection is very much real. The image that we speak of is an installation, a concerted effort between two NGOs namely Jhatkaa.org & Waatavaran. Installed outside RD National College junction and titled- ‘The Billboard that breathes’, this is a first-of-its-kind initiative in Maharashtra, where an interactive art installation has been used to demonstrate the lethal impact of polluted air on human health. Installed on the 14th of January, the unique creation is an effigy of human lungs and is made of Hepa filters and a fan. The idea is to present a realistic visual that represents the catastrophic damage that our lungs sustain, simply by breathing in the city.

On the first day, the apparatus of the installation depicts the virtuosity of a healthy pair of lungs, however as the days pass, it begins to reflect the deterioration ensued by being exposed there. A brainchild of Jhatkaa.org, the said installation was previously mounted in Bengaluru and Delhi as well. The current public exhibit that has been installed outside National college will be available for viewing till the 31st of January. The initiative aims to posit a real-time imagery reference, with regards to the caustic effect of air pollution and its inimical effect on the human repository system. Shikha Kumar, Campaigns Manager with Jhatkaa. org states “Along with Waatavaran, we decided to showcase the installation in Mumbai because air pollution is not thought of as a serious concern yet. The installation is a great way to generate public awareness and get the conversation going, as people get to see the lungs changing colour. It also gives

a real-time reading of the air quality index (AQI). Alongside this, we have an online petition asking Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the CM to take steps to clean up Mumbai’s air.” Shikha Kumar added “In a span of two weeks the lungs have become black. High levels of particulate matter in the air, caused in large part due to vehicular emissions and dust…was all trapped in the HEPA filters. This has proven to be one of the simplest yet visually effective ways of showcasing what the deteriorating air quality in the city is doing to our lungs,”. If you would like to support and sign the petition please log onto Jhatkaa.org. Kumar added as per studies carried out by air pollution research group, Urbanemissions.info, vehicular emissions and industries itself contributes 31 percent to the total PM 2.5 concentration in Mumbai. “When I saw these faux lungs, I told the campaigners that these are like my lungs,

which have been put up on a billboard. I will now get to see what is happening to my lungs as well as that of other Mumbaikars. This is the best possible way to demonstrate to people what is happening inside their body when they inhale polluted air,” said Dr. Sanjeev Mehta, Chief Pulmonologist, Lilavati hospital. Apart from this, the organizers are also hosting an exhibition titled ‘Breathless: An Artistic Call To India’s Air Pollution Crisis’ at Bombay Arts Society, Bandra Reclamation and will be open to the public till the 31st of January from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibition features, photographs taken by Ishan Tanka and stories written by acclaimed journalist Aruna Chandrasekhar. With such an assemblage of informative initiatives regarding air, one must simply, just do it, and take it upon ourselves to safeguard the future for the sake of posterity. Sidhant Nayangara

Personal differences and internal clashes between communities of the fisherfolks at Chimbai beach, Bandra west have halted the construction of a boat parking yard for a jetty and 3 boat parking dhakkas. Fisherfolks from the Chimbai East Indian Koli Samaj (CEIKS) are facing difficulties in daily fishing activities with no jetty and parking yard as around 30 people residing at Chimbai have opposed the jetty project. On the other hand, the opposing parties claim the project will lead to the breaking of rocks ultimately resulting in flooding homes. How did it all begin? Chimbai, a well-known beach which connects Carter Road waters to Bandstand, is home to over 1,500 families who mostly depend on fishing to earn their living. In 2008, the active fisherfolks approached the State Fisheries Department to make a society. Davin Candoria

(Vice President) & Mr Raymond Quadros (President of CEIKS), said, “The government was giving a jetty as an obligatory once there was an established fishing society. So, we collected all the required documents to make a society, the government got all necessary permissions & approvals & achieved recognition as a fishing society, which is complete & the registration number is about to be given yet by fishery department.” What is a jetty? How does it help in fishing? Jetty is a long ramp made in koliwadas across India for fishermen. It is a walkway from the shoreline up till the sea where boats are floating & parked in the water. Fisherfolks need to walk & get & take goods, fish, ice, equipment’s, fishing nets, oars, fuel, oil, passengers & fish. Fisherfolks at Chimbai got three dhakkas & one jetty approved for the

BANDRA BUZZ | FEBRUARY 2020

A select group of people line up to view India’s first jet airliner, Air India’s Boeing 707-400

The first Air India crew to fly India’s first commercial jet plane

60 years of the Jet Age in India

Since the invention of the wheel, perhaps no other invention has revolutionized mass transportation as much as the jet engine. It is also one of mankind’s greatest engineering achievements. The start of the Jet Age was a paradigm shift in human history & for most civilians, it arrived in our country sixty years ago this month – on 21st February 1960. India’s national carrier, Air India ushered in the Jet Age in India when its first jet aircraft, a Boeing 707-400 was delivered on that date, from the Boeing factory in Seattle in the United States, via New York & then London, to Santa Cruz airport in Bombay. The airplane later christened “Annapurna” & registered VT-DJJ began its journey under the command of Boeing’s chief test pilot for the Boeing 707 aircraft, Tex Johnston. As an aviator, Johnston was already a legend. In 1955 he had managed to perform a barrel-roll while flying the Boeing 707 prototype, a feat so amazing that it remains an indelible part of aviation history. On the morning of 20th February 1960, Tex Johnston, Air India chief pilot Adi Gazdar, along with Boeing flight instructor Bob Mattison & flight engineer instructor Dick Smith took off in India’s first jet aircraft from Seattle & made the long flight to London, after a brief halt at New York. At London, the crew was joined by Chairman of Air India & India’s first pilot, JRD Tata, as well as other dignitaries & guests. On departure from London,

JRD Tata took control of the Boeing 707 as it made its way to Bombay. The next day, the airplane touched down at Santa Cruz airport. The jet age had truly arrived in India. The airplane with 4 jet engines had travelled five thousand miles, non-stop from London to Bombay in around 8 hours. As Mr Tata later remarked, he had flown the same course in reverse – from Bombay to London, thirty years earlier, but that had taken him 8 days! India’s first jet aircraft landed at Santa Cruz and was received with much fanfare. The then Governor of Bombay, Sri Prakasa, officiated the ceremony. In keeping with the Indian tradition, a coconut was broken in front of the nose-gear of the airplane, for good luck. JRD Tata, Tex Johnston, and the rest of the crew were welcomed as heroes, with garlands of marigold flowers. Commencing a new convention of naming its Boeing 707 jet airplanes after mountain peaks, the aircraft to bring jet travel to India was soon christened “Annapurna” by Air India. A few years after becoming the first jet aircraft in India, a fire aboard the airplane while on the ground caused substantial damage to it. It was repaired over a course of 16 weeks, and renamed “Gauri Shankar”, perhaps to bring it better luck. At that time, the second Boeing 707 aircraft delivered and originally named “Gauri Shankar” and registered VT-DJI, was re-christened as “Nandadevi”. Even more unfortunate was its final

fate. Years later, in the early hours of 22nd June 1982 “Gauri Shankar” was coming into land at Santa Cruz airport when it was hit by a tremendous rain-squall. As it crashed on landing, it claimed the lives of 17 passengers & cabin crew. India had lost its first jet airplane. As the jet age gained momentum in India, skilled pilots were needed to fly these majestic airplanes. To meet this requirement, in the mid-1960s Air India requested the Indian Air Force to deputize some of its most skilled & experienced pilots of large military aircraft, to fly the Boeing 707 jets. One of these aviators was my father. As a decorated veteran of two wars who flew the Soviet-built Antonov An-12 aircraft with 44 Squadron in the Indian Air Force, he & many of his brothers-in-arms transitioned from being military aviators to civilian airline pilots. Close to a decade & a half later, as a four-month-old infant, I had the privilege of embarking on my first flight aboard one of the early Air India Boeing 707 jetliners, once flown by my father. The Boeing 707 jet aircraft revolutionized air travel around the world, and India was no exception. In total Air India operated 11 Boeing 707s, including the -300 and the -400 variants, as well as two “Combi” aircraft, (that could carry both passengers as well as cargo). Interestingly, even after more than half a century later, two of these (the two

“Combis”, once named “Kamet” & “Trishul” while with Air India) still remain in service with the Indian Air Force. In the early days of the jet age, the skies over Bombay were treated to a spectacle like never before. On 25th March 1960, the third Boeing 707 delivered to Air India (later christened “Everest”) and registered VT-DJK, was escorted to Santa Cruz airport by Folland Gnat fighters of the Indian Air Force. As an aviation archaeologist of sorts searching for a preserved Antonov An-12 airplane he flew in the wars, I had the opportunity in 2017, to visit the Indian Air Force Museum in Palam, Delhi. On its wall hung an enormous photograph of the event. Regrettably, the caption of the photo was incorrect. It mentioned the name of the aircraft as “Ashoka”, which was a Boeing 747 rather than a 707, and which was not delivered until 11 years later! Sadly, as I realized, if the Indian Air Force museum had gotten their information so wrong, such history stood very little chance of being accurately preserved. As almost all of us fly in jet airplanes today, this ‘journey’ for India started 60 years ago. Thanks to stalwarts of Indian aviation like JRD Tata and Adi Gazder, and giants like Tex Johnston, India stepped into the jet age. We all ought to remember this momentous event in our shared history, on its 60th anniversary. Debasish Chakraverty

We are almost officially done with February, the second free trial month of the year. All the gym memberships, crazy diet plans and weight loss programs have now been flushed down the drain.... or not? There’s still time! It’s always a good time to start something amazing for yourself; and a fitness plan? Well, it’s the cherry on the cake! What’s the fastest way to tone your body you ask? RUNNING. Something I came to know too late in life, but not so late that I couldn’t catch up. When my running group got dissolved earlier this year, I thought it would be the end of yet another fitness journey. To my surprise, few of us decided to keep the engine running and start out on our own... THE BOMBAY SQUAD - the goal and destination is the same for all of us... it’s the journey that differs and matters. And with this passion and ignition, we decided to organise “Push-

ing Limits” encouraging everyone of all age groups and professions to kick start their fitness journey with a 5k/10k. Come join us on the 21st March, Saturday at 5:45 am Taj Lands End. Registrations can be done on our official Instagram page @thebombaysquad or call on 8291620767. What are you waiting for? We’re still in the month of love, so make the first move, take the first step and if you haven’t yet, run your first 5k/10k with us! The goal is to be better than you were yesterday. REGULAR INTERNET BREAKDOWNS?? WORLD’S FASTEST INTERNET TECHNOLOGY, GPON DOES NOT RELY ON ELECTRICALLY POWERED SWITCHES.

GPON is an access method that provides fibre connectivity (currently the fastest fixed line medium) using point-to-multipoint technology. Its defining feature is that it uses passive splitters in the fibre network so that a single fibre line from the service provider can deliver connectivity to multiple premises. Whereas an active Ethernet network uses physical, electrically powered switches that open and close to send signals to different premises, GPON does not rely on electrically powered switches.
