1,300 students will parade on Bandstand to rekindle Patriotism on the 70th Republic Day

This year, around 1,300 students of over 25 schools of the city will send across a message of ‘Rekindling Patriotism, honouring the Armed Forces & Creating a Clean Environment’. These students will march from 7 am on January 26 at Bandstand as part of the Brihanmumbai Interschool Republic Day (B.I.R.D.) march past parade. A replica of the Republic Day parade conducted at Delhi, students will show their solidarity and respect through marching in a similar style. Students will exhibit various social and cultural performances revolving around this year’s theme of ‘Rekindling the Spirit of Patriotism’.

Students, teachers, principals, parents, members of the Army, the Coast Guard and other dignitaries will participate in this parade. For the first time, members of the Coast Guard have been roped in for the parade. Peter deSouza, Convener of the B.I.R.D. Group, said, “The Coast Guard keeps a watch on the coastline surrounding Mumbai and protects us continuously. MOVING AWAY FROM PLASTIC IS THE NEED OF THE HOUR

We all grew up with our stuff being in plastic. Our lunches and sandwiches were packed in plastic tiffin boxes. We never questioned that as we never knew about its effects on health. It would be practically impossible for any of us to get plastic out of our life completely but the point is how much we can reduce it. Firstly we have to understand why is plastic so dangerous. Some plastics when heated leaches around fifty-five to sixty different chemicals. These toxins and chemicals from leeched plastic enter into your food and may mimic a number of other hormone creating hormonal imbalance.

6) People drinking hot liquids in Styrofoam cups or thin plastic cups. You have to understand that when you put a hot liquid in Styrofoam or plastic you are leaching chemicals into that drink and you are ingesting that drink into you.

1) I’m totally against microwaves. You should be heating your food on the gas. Microwave-safe is just a scam. Microwave safe means that that particular microwave safe bowl, which is also made out of plastic, just won’t get warped with the heat or will get disfigured. This doesn’t mean that it is not going to leach chemicals. 2) If you need to buy plastic bottled water you can transfer that water into glass, stainless steel or copper vessels. Doing this is easy and inexpensive and we got to make this effort if we want to reduce our exposure to plastic. 3) Start storing your food in stainless steel containers or glass containers. In case of restaurant foods, ask the restaurant the grade of plastic being used. Grade one, four and five is what you should be looking at.

5) When it comes to schools, children want all those fancy coloured tiffin boxes which are all plastic. I think the number one rule that a school needs to push forward to parents is that everyone eats in simple stainless steel tiffin boxes. There’s no shame in eating in a stainless steel container. Traditional India ate out of stainless steel plates, copper plates and metal plates.

7) Do not leave plastic water bottles in the car especially where temperatures can reach 48 to 50 degrees celsius. Keep metal containers or just carry your bottle wherever you go. It’s impossible for us to get out all this plastic from every walk of life but we can reduce over time and slowly minimize our exposure to toxins from plastics and all of these things. So start moving back to these little simple ways of eating in the right utensils and storing food in the right way. It’s going to take you a week to ten days to make that change but believe me it’s worth it.

The Gang Wars of Old Bandra The way it used to be, back then…like in the Wild West

Political banners nuisance to society MM 22/12/18 echoes sentiments of Mumbaikars castigating political parties for plastering walls with banners to ‘Stop Chamchagiri’, now that the elections are coming closer. This whole ‘Chamchagiri’ business was encouraged by the Ruling Party in the seventies when sycophancy was at its highest. In those days CM’s of States would spend time hobnobbing between New Delhi and their respective capitals, falling at the feet of the PM to show their unfailing loyalty, trying to buttress the High Command. And who was this High Command? It was a coterie of ‘chamchas’ close to the Queen. Sadly a few of these are still walking around hoping to come back to life in a new avatar, as the tide will definitely turn in their favour in June 2019. Those were the days when the electorate had no choice. As we have come out of that cocoon of sycophancy and grown into more matured state of political mind, the chamchagiri business of our political leaders is less visible, but more exposed at the grassroot level of Corporators and MLA’s. The political banners of this ‘shameless lot’, is seen only in deeply congested areas, localities having hutments, tenanted shanties and buildings that have come up under the slum rehabilitation scheme. It is here where we find many unemployed people roaming around willing to work as social activists of political parties to spread the message of engaging the electorate for vote bank. These chamchas don’t do anything for free for they exort favours

from the party through Corporators and MLA’s to seek concessions from the Corporation and other utility connections. The High Court had earlier banned the installation of political banners, but the corrupt government needs votes to survive, desperately needs that cheap publicity to announce its promises and make life better for the downtrodden, for it is these people who get carried away by such chamchagiri. Now the BMC standing committee has once again put its foot down and deferred the process of banning illegal banners which has been an issue since 2016. Political parties and their elected representatives shamelessly install banners calling for celebration of birthdays, public holidays and festivals, greeting residents with happiness for the occasion, when there has been nothing to celebrate for the last 70 years. We have only advanced by increasing the population, rest is a big zero. Ache Din was just an election slogan. Now it is a curse word. People in India are waiting to boot out these ‘gau rakshaks’ as they have done in the heartland in 2018. Since the elections are coming near, Corporators and MLA’s have started filling potholes, providing ‘Swachalayas’ in slum areas only for the sake of seeking votes. When will India stop this nuisance of permitting political parties to have their own way and disturb our peace of mind? We need upright leaders of high moral standards, not simply ‘yes’ men who have turned out to be liars with false promises. Amar Singh

BANDRA FAIR SCENARIO: Every year during the Bandra Fair, (a fair held during the month of September, to honour the feast of Our Lady of The Mount), the gangs used to be hyperactive. The ‘Sankley Street Gang’ from Byculla, almost always used to clash with the ‘Lunik Gang’ from Chapel Road, located near the Bandra Fair area. They say - Pop & Peal, two brothers headed this gang. The Bandra police in those days, used to have their hands full, controlling the enormous crowds that might have got hurt in this gang warfare – that, at times; got very violent. It was safer to visit the Fair during the day - in those days, but for that ‘magic of the night’ and the suspense it offered, we were drawn to the scene like magnets. Darkness was a cover for dangerous situations. Favourite weapons used were: mostly hockey sticks, cricket bats stumps & soda water bottles. As the frenzy grew; crowbars, choppers & swords would appear – for the ‘kill’. Bazaar Road, a road that leads to the Bandra Bazaar where we all went to buy our daily veggies & meats; had its own bunch of toughs, called the ‘Joe Barrow Boys’. These 7 brothers bonded big time - and were body builders. One of ‘the boys’ looked a fine specimen, with his handlebar moustache, formidable biceps, tree trunk thighs - and a chest that would have made Arnold Schwarzenegger green with envy. Many locals remember, that Joe spoke very little - but his eyes conveyed a lot. Nobody messed with Joe unless ‘you

wanted to commit suicide.’ They were the toughest and meanest around. But they were also kind hearted (read Robin Hood) - and lent a helping hand to the poor and needy. Then, there was the gang from Mount Mary’s; headed by two brothers and the gang from Chinchpokli & Boran Road. They were ‘kings’ – in their areas. Their control over local matters was immense – and their decisions, final. As the years ‘progressed’, some of the gangs also dabbled in drugs; but it was always alcohol (“hooch”) that gave them their daily bread. None of the “gangs” are active today. Those still alive, prefer to be left alone to live in peace. Strangely, in those days women were left in peace and given a lot of respect. Unless you ‘invaded’ the space of another guy’s woman or ‘line maraoed’ (in the parlance of those days), then one was asking for trouble. Naturally! FAST FORWARD 2018 Today, as I walk in the late afternoon sun; on these same streets that had witnessed blood & gore, police raids, gangs running helter-skelter & the passersby running for safety, hooch splattered on the streets; there is a great calm, so thick that you can cut it with a knife. “Soosegaad”, (quiet) says an ole’ timer. The streets are clean, the people are indoors watching TV or ‘snoozing after boozing’ - & for them life is worth ‘living again’. But the “MAGIC” of ‘those days’, has been lost forever. Stanislaus students ‘Care For Creation’ through #ProjestStanArt ‘Art speaks in its own creative way’, following this students of St. Stanislaus, High School, Bandra aim to spread a strong message through their art and creativity. Drawings and artwork created by students based on ecological and Environment themes will be painted on the wall of the school facing Hill Road. #ProjectStanArt, a creative social initiative, has been started by the school to use art to create a change in the society. This project commenced in December 2018, when over 2,200 students of St Stanislaus High School and St Stanislaus International School participated in a drawing competition based on ecological themes. The winning artworks of this competition will now be painted onto the school wall facing Hill Road, by the students, artists, parents and

local community volunteers. This year most of the school activities have revolved around caring for and

nurturing the environment through various green initiatives taken up by the school. march with defense officers. Here comes the Sun Fr. Magi Murzello is a priest who wears many hats: Principal of St. Andrew’s High School, Bandra, Rector of St. Andrew’s College, Bandra, Editor of EducFocus – the magazine of the ABE (Archdiocesan Board of Education) and a seat on the Senate of the University of Mumbai since September 2017. Fr. Magi has changed the way youngsters attend school. He has brought in a new concept, ‘Mission Sunshine’, which aims at transforming criticism into appreciation and encouragement. Verus Ferreira met Fr Magi Murzello at his tastefully decorated office, to learn more about Mission Sunshine and how he encourages sunshine into the students’ lives. THE CONCEPT Fr. Magi is a man on a mission; a mission to drape his school in sunshine. From the school lobby to its corridors and more importantly, his office, all are bathed in sunshine; transforming darkness into light. Every Friday, students are encouraged to wear their Mission Sunshine t-shirts instead of the school uniform. Thus, a very friendly and family-like atmosphere exists at St. Andrew’s High School; something never attempted or done before. According to him, “Appreciation has to be inculcated as a life skill. Mission Sunshine strives to remind constantly that everyone is hungry for praise and starving for honest appreciation. Mission Sunshine seeks to instil the attitude of appreciation in the stakeholders of the School.” Mission Sunshine was the outcome of a personal experience Fr. Magi had with his nephew. “It was my nephew’s first day at school. He thoroughly enjoyed himself; but the next day, he sulked and just refused to go. I found out the reason and tried to do something about it. Around the same time, the movie ‘3 Idiots’ was released. The song “Give me some sunshine…”became a rage with film-goers, but, actu-

ally, it is a tragic song sung by an unappreciated student who commits suicide in the movie. The end result was that the student had, in fact, fared well in his examinations, but circumstances drove him to take this extreme step. It was with this thought in mind that I developed the idea of Mission Sunshine.” With a lot of planning and hard work, Mission Sunshine saw the light of day on 31st July, 2010. It found favour with Honourable Member of Parliament, Ms. Priya Dutt, who inaugurated the concept at the School. The concept of Mission Sunshine applies to all students; from Junior KG to Standard X. Prior to implementation, Fr. Magi explained the concept to all parents and received positive feedback from them. “Many welcomed such a novel concept and gave me their support,” says an elated Fr. Magi. Fr. Magi started out with a solarium – a ‘coun-solar’ to appreciate and encourage the students. “Many youngsters are wary of meeting a counsellor. Their first thought is that they are being reprimanded and advised in a very stern manner. The coun-solar attends to students’ needs on a one-to-one basis without parental interference. He/she instil positive thoughts and appreciation for the student before solving their problems that may range from personal issues to family pressure.” There is an Appreciation Bank in every classroom; reserved for classmates’ interaction & appreciation within the same class. Fr. Magi hasn’t forgotten his teachers & has created a Pat Book for them. But what about peons & ayahs? “Taking a cue from the movie ‘Munnabhai MBBS’, we also have a page for them in our ‘Book of Revolution’. This page is for the support staff to appreciate one another.” informs Fr. Magi. IMPLEMENTATION Every year, Fr. Magi hands out a goodie bag with Mission Sunshine goodies in

it, One avatar of the goodie bag was a black-zippered carry case with a stylish handle and could double up as an iPad cover. One of the items in the case is a Thank Pad – a gratitude journal which doubles as a diary and has space to list all the good deeds done each day as well as the ones planned for the next day. The Pad also helps develop the practice of recalling the people who cross your path everyday and to whom you must be thankful for each and every day. Says Fr. Magi, “Any work done out of goodwill for the other is a good act and should be appreciated; but very often it goes unnoticed. This book reminds us to appreciate others.” At the end of the book are 8 TanQ notes to be filled in with a personal message and given to someone who has meant a lot to you. preciation. It is artistically designed to shine like the sun. The red smile in the word ‘Sunshine’ is the smile that appreciation generates. The ‘Wow’ aspect extols wonderment; the willingness to be surprised by life. It is from wonderment that appreciation springs. Mission Sunshine exhorts: the ‘WOW’ MAGIC... spread it!” Smiles the fifty one year old Salesian product, who has spent the last eighteen years of his twenty one years of priestly life in the role of education. A Magical Spring 2019 Season for Classical Music Lovers Classical music lovers are in for a treat this February when the Symphony Orchestra of India’s Spring 2019 Season begins on 4th February, hosting a number of special events. Martyn Brabbins will be returning to city in his second appearance with the SOI following his highly - acclaimed concerts in 2016. Immediately following the concerts in Mumbai, the SOI will embark on its maiden tour of the United Kingdom with performances in London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Guildford, and Edinburgh. FROM AIR TO THERE: THE BEGINNINGS OF AIR MAIL IN INDIA

As in common these days, India takes credit for almost all things positive, from the invention of the “zero”, to the next US Presidential hopefuls in the race. In recent times however, it has missed a beat in taking credit for something that it actually gave to the world. In its never ending brag-fest, our nation has forgotten that “Air Mail” was born in our country, 108 years ago. Late 1910 saw an explosion of aviation activity in India. In December of that year, an airplane flew for the first time in our country, in Tollygunge, Calcutta. This event sparked the imagination of people, and “magnificent men in their flying machines” suddenly became popular all over India. In early 1911, Walter Windham, a British aviation pioneer, organized aerial demonstration flights in India. In February of that year, a 23 year old French aviator named Henri Pequet was flying in India along with Windham, and between them had transported eight biplanes for demonstration flights at the United Provinces Exhibition being held in Allahabad. At the same time, the chaplain of the Holy Trinity Church in Allahabad, a Rev. W.E.S. Holland,

was looking for ways to fund his proposed new youth hostel building at the church, and appealed to Windham for help in fundraising for the “Oxford and Cambridge Hostel” and also for the Holy Trinity Church. Windham agreed to help Rev. Holland, and came up with the idea of “Aerial Post”. He then obtained approval from the local post office for officially sanctioned mail. Postal officials in Allahabad asked Windham to design the commemorative rubber stamp to be used (also known as the “cancel”). The date was set for Saturday, February 18, 1911, and young Henri Pequet was assigned the task. Walter Windham then had a picture of Pequet in his Humber-Sommer biplane published into 40 commemorative post cards, with the words “First ‘Aerial Post,’ Allahabad, February 18, 1911.” printed on top. Although there was a Post Office at the Exhibition Ground, these mails were not accepted at that Post Office, but had to be handed in to Rev. Holland who dealt with them from Pequet’s personal tent. All mail received the special “cancel” designed by Windham. This rubber stamp was made by the postal authori-

ties at the Postal Works at Aligarh, and depicted Pequet’s biplane, with the words “First Aerial Post U.P. Exhibition Allahabad 1911”. Most mail had a cancellation in magenta ink, but there were a few rare ones in black ink as well. The regular postage rate required an additional surcharge as a donation for the Church Hostel Building. And so, on Saturday, February 18, 1911, at 5:30pm, Henri Pequet took off from the exhibition grounds at Allahabad in his Humber-Sommer biplane, powered by a 50hp Gnome engine. He flew for a distance of 6 miles (10 kilometers), over the Yamuna River, to the town of Naini. He carried with him a sack containing about 6500 letters & the 40 commemorative postcards. On landing at Naini, Pequet had completed the world’s first Air Mail flight. He dropped off his sack of postcards and letters and then returned right away to the exhibition grounds at Allahabad, having completed the whole journey in about 13 minutes. By some accounts, the flight was said to have been witnessed by over a million people (perhaps an exaggeration), including the Governor, Sir John Hewitt.

The 40 postcards were signed by Henri Pequet before the flight. Some of these survive to this day. Henri continued in aviation becoming a test pilot. He died in France in March 1974. Walter Windham returned to England and, in September 1911, organized the First UK Aerial Post in celebration of the Coronation of King George V. He was knighted in 1923 and died on 5 July 1942. With Allahabad having been renamed “Prayagraj” by the state government of Uttar Pradesh last year, it is quite likely that over time this piece of history will also be erased, just like the place where it happened. While JRD Tata is (rightfully) acknowledged as the father of aviation in India, Henri Péquet & Walter Windham were perhaps the unsung grand-fathers of Indian aviation. Rev. W.E.S. Holland of the Holy Trinity Church too, played his part. For what these men did 108 years ago, was the beginning of an invention that India gave to the world. So every time you post a letter (a rare occurrence in itself, these days), you can now feel proud that “Air Mail” started, right here, at home. Debasish Chakraverty

Aarambh set to completes a decade this year! Social Responsibility Forum (SRF) is a club of Anil Surendra Modi School of Commerce, NMIMS University which was established for contributing to the society and to those less privileged than oneself. Since its start, events held by SRF each year has always attempted to create awareness and a sense of accountability in the masses it meets. AARAMBH, the flagship event of the club, is a social marathon, which calls for spirit, enthusiasm and ener-

As Aarambh completes a decade this year, SRF has collaborated with ‘Arpan - Towards Freedom from Child Sexual Abuse’. Arpan is the largest NGO addressing the phenomenon of CSA in the country. “Go Green…Grow Green…Glow Green!” says St. Teresa’s Institute of Education in its 3G formula

The Green Highlight of the Sesquicentennial celebrations of the Congregation of the Carmelite Religious was the ‘Go-Green with Tetrapak’ campaign undertaken by St. Teresa’s Institute of Education, Santa Cruz. This tetrapak initiative was supported by RUR (Are you Reducing, Re-using & Recycling). All the four institutions located on the campus namely, St. Teresa’s Convent High School, St. Teresa’s Junior College, St. Teresa’s Special School & the B.Ed college worked unitedly & undauntedly towards the worthy cause of environmental protection. The venture witnessed the collection of a total of 10,500 used tetrapak cartons which were then

recycled into a collection bin & a garden bench which were inaugurated & installed at the campus on 21st January 2019 - a golden figured day in the green calendar of St. Teresa’s Society. The inaugural function was attended by Ms. Monisha Narke - Founder and CEO of RUR along with her team member Ms.Neha Mundra, Sr.Wilma Mendes - Manager of St. Teresa’s Society, Dr. Sr. Tanuja Waghmare - Principal of St. Teresa’s Institute of Education and the faculty and students. The project was spear-headed by Dr. Giselle D’souza and Dr. Cindrella D’mello. Dr. Sr. Tanuja stated with pride, “It is truly a green moment for the entire Teresian family.
