Blood Donation Drive @ Bandra Station for the Bomb Blast victims

F

riday, 15th July 2011 saw hundreds of blood donors, who volunteered by doing their bit to help in the aftermath of the recent serial bomb blast that struck simultaneously at 3 crowded locations in the city centre. The youth of Bandra have shown strong support by their caring action,

in spite of continuous rains & traffic jams. This ‘Donate Blood....Donate Life’ drive was organised by the youth of Bandra with the guidance & support of honourable MP Smt. Priya Dutt and MLA Shri Baba Siddique. All sections of people were associated with this cause. This programme started at 4pm and ended at

8pm. They collected 207 bottles of blood. The Mahatma Gandhi Seva Mandir Blood Bank air-conditioned van (in pic) was parked just below the sky walk. Blood Donors were given light refreshments. The Youth Congress body played a key roll with all elected office bearers of Bandra as well as the district

President - Rahul Kanal, & Assembly Presidents present. Yet, it was a nonpolitical event, wherein there were no banners with political logos or names. It was just an event organised for a right cause - at the right time...Jai Hind...Bandra Rocks !!! - Manoj Haria

Letters to the Editor

July has us in a cool seasonal spell that’s creating an aura of magical monsoon masti. Many are heading towards resorts around Mumbai, to enjoy weekends amidst settings of romantic rains & rainbows. For the adventure-oriented, this is the ideal time for terrific treks. However, for most of us Bandraites – our hectic lives continue… traffic traumas, reckless rickshaws, buses, trains, hawkers, garbage, overflowing drains, dislodged paver blocks. Send in your experiences along with pictures & possible solutions. You can share your viewpoints on various local issues. Last month we interviewed Baba Siddique - MLA, and many were happy to read his instant reactions to our questions. This month, readers can get the reactions of Ashish Shelar – Municipal Councilor. These ‘Know Your Candidate’ series of exclusive interviews will help citizens make an informed decision, when they vote early next year in the upcoming BMC Elections. Many subscribers got their June issue late – or did not receive it. Please bear with us - as upgrades in our system of distribution created confusion on this front. This will be resolved soon. To make this monsoon more magical, we have a special competition page with prizes of books, CDs & DVDs. Meanwhile, our Independence Day & Bandra Fair issues are getting set to uplift you to that next level. Regards, Merck D’Silva

FLEECING AT BANDRA STATION This is to bring to your notice that the ‘Share-An-Auto’ run outside Bandra Station West is fleecing the commuters. On a normal basis the minimum fare one has to pay for Linking Road is Rs 11 or 12 and the same for Old Khar, but these share autos are charging commuters Rs 10 per seat which is no way helping the commuters. In fact they are being fleeced, as these auto fellows take more than the stipulated 3 passengers at one time and flaunt all traffic rules. They are abusive and improperly dressed. What is more surprising is that the RTO has turned a blind eye towards the whole issue. I feel that one should not charge more than 5 to 6 Rs per seat. I would be grateful if you can take up this issue with the authorities concerned. - Rishi Bhandoo Minority Educational Institutions It is very undemocratic for governments to even harbour the thought of de-recognising schools on this issue. The rules and regulations for de-recognising any educational institutions is already drawn up by the government and there is no reason to deviate from the constitution which has been already provided for freedom of minorities to conduct educational institutes as per the constitution. Certain vested interests are behind this and India which is a democratic country (and also the catholic schools being genuine minority institutions) should not be targeted. What does the word ‘minority’ mean? What right do the parents and Government have to question the authority of the institution? We have a judicial system and if there is any griviences regarding the same and any deviation there is the judiciary which can provide justice. This is a political game which can clearly be seen for strengthening the vote banks of certain political parties.

This issue has to be taken to the international community. - Desmond Pereira LIFE IS PRECIOUS Now-a-days, it is common to see teenage boys and girls smoking and drinking in Bandra. What they don't realise is the circumstances they'll have to face once they grow up. I remember the time in school when I was the least popular boy and had a few friends, and I remember a classmate telling me, "You should smoke and join us if you want to be well-known." Well, I knew it was the wrong path, and I ignored them. My best friend was once caught for smoking secretly at school. His parents were so depressed and dejected. I tried my best to convince him that what he was doing was wrong. He just wouldn't listen. Matters became worse until one day he passed away due to cancer. I see boys and girls of 14 years of age smoking and drinking on Bandra roads. It really saddens me to see this. I'm 53 now. I was just 14 when I lost my best friend. It's been 39 years since then and what I have learnt so far is that your teenage years are the most precious years of your life. In these years, you're building the gap between childhood and adulthood. If you chose the wrong path, the bridge is sure to collapse. Parents should be strict towards their children when it comes to their freedom. They shouldn't just spoil them by pampering them all the time. Schools should also take strict actions against such conditions. - Jubel D’cruz

One Day At A Time...30 years

Fr. Joe receiving the Padma award from Pratibha Patil

T

his August, the Kripa Foundation celebrates 30 years of service, working for the rehabilitation of people affected & afflicted with chemical dependency & HIV/AIDS. From Bollywood to Hollywood, company CEOs, foreign dignitaries & the common man in need of a friend, everyone knows Father Joe or ‘the singing priest’. Verus Ferreira catches up with the Padmashree awardee to find out what’s new. Seated in his office in the compound of Mt. Mary’s Church in Bandra, it is easy to talk to Joe Pereira. He has always been willing to give people time & to talk, in spite of a hectic schedule that has him criss-crossing continents, countries, interests as varied as yoga & music, & of course, faiths. And he knows that the best place to start a story is at the beginning. He began with his birth, to Martha & Hilary Pereira, living in what was then Bassein & is now Vasai, with their two boys & two girls. The large house in which the Pereiras lived was handed over to the Jesuits by his mother, while the family moved to a smaller house next door. The Jesuit priests used the place for the upliftment of Adivasi boys. Joe watched them at work & listened keenly as they recounted their activities to him. He soon got interested. After completing his S.S.C, Joe joined St. Xavier’s College. “I attended just 15

days of college & left,” He smiles. The reason was that he had met two seminarians who influenced him to study for the priesthood. He left for the Parel seminary where he completed two years. He then moved to the present St Pius seminary in Goregaon for another two years, finishing it up with another four years at the Papal Seminary in Pune after which he was ordained priest on September.21, 1967. “I went to Pune more because I wanted to study theology, which was my favorite subject,” he says. Pune brought him much more. “When I was ordained a priest, I found myself spiritually full. But then I realized that my body was not keeping up with my spirituality. It was then I started yoga under the tutelage of B.K.S. Iyengar.” A Catholic priest, practicing yoga, which many in the community think is tantamount to embracing Hinduism! Tongues wagged. But his equanimity remained. “Initially there was a lot of opposition, but the Second Vatican Council in 1962 made the Church more liberal” says Fr. Joe. Fr. Joe’s first appointment was at Our Lady of Victoria Church, Mahim. Swiftly nicknamed the singing priest, the youth sought him out, came enthusiastically for his Masses, for his hard-hitting homilies as much as for the uplifting music he provided. He was there for seven years. In 1974, Father Joe shifted to his next ‘posting’, Holy Name at Colaba, where

Inauguration of Kripa at Vasai - with Mother Theresa he encountered alcoholics & drug addicts at the Gateway of India. He began to work with them, so much so that when he was again shifted, this time to Mount Carmel in Bandra, he actually took an addict there to continue to help him, against great opposition. The man not only recovered from his own addiction, but joined the priest, by now well-known for his unorthodox style & interests, in helping him in a new program to deal with addictions ranging from alcohol to drugs. Not that it was ever easy, though now he makes it sound like it was. To start with, the first few struggling alcoholics lived temporarily in the Mt. Carmel’s Church Annexe. “The Church was initially against the work I was doing. But then I reminded them that even Mother Teresa picked people from the streets & looked after them. Things changed & on August 15, 1981, Kripa (from the Sanskrit word for ‘grace’) was born & from 1983, it began to treat drug addicts as well,” states Fr. Joe. As the Kripa Centre at Bandra gained recognition, Fr. Joe stepped down as parish priest of Mount Carmel’s in 1988 & concentrated on the Foundation full time, opening branches all over the country. A year before he could celebrate the Silver Jubilee of his priesthood in 1992, Kripa opened its doors to HIV /AIDS rehabilitation. According to Fr. Joe, the program of recovery practiced at Kripa is based on

the 12 steps used in Alcoholics Anonymous. “Yoga has been part of the recovery process. If an addict sits in meditation for 20 minutes in the morning & 20 minutes in the evening with an open mind, it can make a world of a difference to his life,” says the priest almost fervently. Spread across 18 locations, 16 Archdioceses & 69 facilities in India with a collaborative presence all around the world, Kripa is marginally funded by government grants, with the rest from well-wishers & other fund raisers. “Not everyone can afford the rehab process. We do charge a fee for boarding & lodging to those who can pay, while the rest we offset from our funds. ” His work never ends & he barely has time to accept awards before the next difficult case calls. Over the years, he has received many, the apex being the Padmashree from the Government of India in April 2009. aster psychologist, yoga guru, theologian, qualified counselor, he has come a long way from his early days as a young priest unsure of himself. Despite his hectic schedule, he still makes time to visit the Kripa centers all over India & abroad. “We will soon be opening our first centre in Mississauga in Toronto (Canada). We are also working on music therapy. The research is on in Pune & we hope to start very soon.” - Verus Ferreira Courtesy: Afternoon Despatch & Courier

Paper selected for presentation at ICISET

M

any students today are eager to get into engineering so that they can earn big pay cheques once they pass out - but how many of them actually take the time to make a difference when it comes to being practical engineers. Albin Vattakattu Elton Sequeira and Lloyd Pereira from Xavier Institute of Engineering, Mahim, did not only make their parents proud - but also their college proud by making an innovative and practical project and publishing an IEEE paper on Target Tracking: Implementing Kalman Filter. From 1250 IEEE papers submitted worldwide only 300 papers were selected to be presented at the International IEEE conference held at Rajkot, Gujrat. Out of which one was their paper.

‘Nothing comes on a silver platter, you have you to go for what you love!’ With a debut at 5, I think it’s safe to say that thing only went upwards from there, right ? So what’s keeping you busy these days? “Well we’ve just got done with 25 shows of ‘The Sound Of Music’, in which I played Brigitta, one of the Von Trapp children. Next, we at St Andrews get ready for the All Bandra Zonals that are in August-September. I’ll be singing both - individually & the duet, & probably be dancing - duo and group. In-between these rehearsals I may act in our Zone Play, & do voice-overs in case required, provided I do not miss out on School.” You just rattled all of this off like it’s a normal week for you, is it always like this? “ Hehehee. Well not every month is this packed, but yes this is pretty much the run of the mill for me.”

U

p on stage for the first time at the age of five, background vocals to several advertisements, walking home with accolades from almost all competitions, a role in Raell Padamsee‘s The Sound Of Music, a regular performer at The Zonals, Celebrate Bandra, Dance & Elocution Competitions, Basketball tournaments, and other events, besides completing her daily homework, school projects, practises & rehearsals ; no, this isn’t the career of a seasoned veteran . . . . far from it really. This and so much more is what Simone Ann Alvares has achieved at the tender age of 11, and all this while making her bed time & most importantly, not missing out on school ! I recently sat down with Simone to talk about this dream rollercoaster of a ride and all that she’s accomplished till now. Throughout the interview she sat curled up on the sofa, a small reminder that behind that on stage persona she is like any other 11 year old. Let’s go back to where it all began shall we, When was the first time you were on stage? “The first time I was on a real big stage was the age of 5. It was at the St Andrews Zonal Competition, winning the Fr Cleophas Trophy for the youngest winner. I also won it the following year.”

Ask the Doctor I am a 35yr old man, diagnosed as a juvenile diabetic. Can you enlighten me on this disease? - Nilesh Sharma Juvenile diabetes, develops during the first 40 yrs of life. The patient is usually normal in weight. Patient suffers from severe thirst, polyuria,(frequency of urine), loss of weight, itching of the female & male private parts. In children & young adults, epigstric pain & vomiting may occur. Coma may result if not treated immediately. It is seen only in about 20% of diabetics. Blood sugar tests confirm the diagnosis. Insulin therapy will control the disease. A few lucky patients may get control on oral drugs. I am a 50yr old man,who weighs 150 kgs. Is this obesity detrimental to my health? - Ricky Pereira Obesity definitely reduces the life span of a person. It is a very serious disease. Hypertension is very much co-related to obesity. Diabetes is four times more common in obese patients. Obesity in-

So how does an 11 year old with school every morning balance this all out? “I owe most of it to my amazing parents & extended family. My mum keeps track of my rehearsal timings, guitar lessons, homework due and projects left to complete, while my dad’s always there to pick up and drop me pretty much anywhere, and almost always running against the clock. Punctuality & dedication is of utmost priority on our list.” If I had to ask you to pick one song that you’ve sung over all these years that probably meant the most to you, what would that be? “Well this is hard after doing all those classic pieces from The Sound of Music, but ‘Almost There’ from the movie the ‘The Princess and The Frog’ was special, because I felt for the characters in the movie and mainly . . . Tiana’s desire to fulfill her dream.” A little birdie told me that singing is not your only interest, so tell me Simone what else are you looking to conquer? “Well I don’t know about conquering, but I’m focusing on being a contributing team player for our school basketball u-13 Team. I’d like to become a reasonably good guitarist. I also aim to maintain my standing at Inter-school Elocution Com-

creases the risk of coronary & cerebral atherosclerosis. To combat obesity, diet & exercises have to be continued throughout life. Surgical cure for obesity may be advised,if other treatments have not been effective. I am a 67 yr old lady, with a badly wrinkled face. I have been advised a face-lift. What does that mean? -name witheld on request A face-lift,in medical terminology is known as a rhytidectomy. It is a name applied, to a variety of surgical operations, that seek to eliminate wrinkles, through the re-suspension & fixation of the superficial fascia muscles & cutaneous & subcutaneous tissues of the face. Brow lifts, submental & facial liposuction, laser skin resurfacing & injection of "botox"are some of the other procedures, done to reduce wrinkles.

petitions. And of course, pursue my interest of being an all round actor with dance & singing abilities.” Surely there’s something you do just for fun, what’s your favorite past time at the end of a day? “I love Miley Cyrus & Selena Gomez. Whenever I do get the time and I try and catch their episode for the day.” ( Is it any surprise that a show about those young girls who are music sensations, being Simone’s favorite show? ) Simone, to conclude this interview is there any sort of advice you want to give girls and boys your age who have similar dreams and passions? “Well I don’t know about advice as such, but I’ve always believed that nothing comes to you on a silver platter, . . . you have to really work hard to achieve your goals. You need to be passionate about what you do, . . . perseverance & discipline gets us there when the going gets tough. As opportunities came my way, I made many new creative friends with a vast range of views and ideas that helped me learn a lot. With God in your life, combined together with hands-on parents and the guidance of an understanding extended family, this would be your ultimate Dream Team!” - Sean D’mello

Rose Gardens & Minefields

This book is an eclectic collection of poems, short stories and essays by

BandraBuzz, July 2011 curred in 11th June, 1962. Since its days as a military and federal prison, San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island was known as "the inescapable prison". Thus many convicts lodged there had a history of escape attempts at their prior locations. Frank Lee Morris (Clint Eastwood) is the face of the film and the man who plans the escape. When Frank arrives at Alcatraz in 1960, the sadistic warden (Patrick McGoohan) who is aware of his record of prison breaks, warns him that the prison is escape-proof. The warden makes life hell not only for Frank, but for almost all inmates. Frank makes friends with some of the inmates, including Doc (Roberts Blossom), an old lifer who paints in his cell; and English (Paul Benjamin), the prison librarian. Morris gets on the wrong side of the law when the mighty and powerful Wolf (Bruce Fischer) tries to stab him during a knife fight in the exercise yard, after Frank refuses to accede to his demands. Frank’s punishment for the fight is solitary confinement. Upon his release, he meets up with his former inmate friends who have just arrived at the prison, the Anglin brothers John (Fred Ward) and Clarence (Jack Thibeau). Frank knows them too well and plans his jailbreak roping both brothers. The dark and shadowy cell walls and the tedious work for the es-

music, the Santana and Davis devised a list of guitar-centric titles and then went round inviting a host of guest vocalists to perform on the tracks. So you have Chris Cornell (on Led Zeppelin s ‘Whole Lotta Love’), Pat Monahan (on Van Halen’s ‘Dance the Night Away’), Chester Bennington and Ray Manzarek (on The Doors classic ‘Riders on the Storm’), Rob Thomas (on Cream’s ‘Sunshine Of Your Love’), Scott Weiland (on the Rolling Stones ‘Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’), Chris Daughtry (on Def Leppard’s anthemic ‘Photograph’), Gavin Rossdale (on T. Rex’s ‘Bang A Gong’) to rapper Nas (on AC/DC’s ‘Back In Black’), and veteran Joe Cocker (on Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Little Wing’). A very special mention has to be made of the all time Beatles favorite ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ performed by singer india.arie and master cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The spanish guitar work on the song is the highlight. Santana is known for his collaborative work when we heard him on ‘Smooth’ with Rob Thomas, but this album of 12 tracks is nothing ‘Supernatural’, but worth a listen for any rock

Vivek Pereira. Know Your Candidate

An Interview with

Ashish Shelar

Municipal Councilor

Sports

Bandra Football League Begins With A Bang !

crimes are happening during evenings (& nights) at Linking & S.V. Road. It is unfortunate that the current police force are not doing enough to tackle these criminal activities. As an activist & Councilor, I have raised this issue several times before the concerned authorities. I want to see the police force strengthened so that common citizens can move around safely. There should be more interaction with authorities & senior citizens. It is their basic right. This is my demand and I am pursuing it.

What is your take on the 'War Against Corruption' – and its effect on Bandra? This issue is so huge, that it needs to be tackled at different levels. Today, when we talk about the 'War Against Corruption', we basically mean the Lokpal Bill issue pending before the Central Government. As for me & my party, we have publicly said that we support Anna Hazare. Even A. B. Vajpayee, when he was the Prime Minister, made a recommendation to Parliament, that even the Prime Minister's office should be within the purview of the Lokpal. So, we are fully for Anna Hazare's Andolan. This is all at the Central level. When we talk about corruption, it comes from the higher level – downwards. There are two ways to tackle this situation. First, see that the corrupt officials are punished, publically humiliated & taught a lesson. In my own career of around 9 – 10 years as Municipal Councilor, I have always raised my voice about local civic corruption in & around Bandra – and also about corrupt contractors who have entered the corporation - to the Central corporation office. Second, comes the corrupt politicians, who should be dealt in a similar manner. In my tenure as Municipal Councilor, I have never compromised on any complaint or issues or got involved in any illegal activities. So, I feel that this war against corruption needs to be strengthened – I am with you at the fore front, starting from Anna Hazare to the local level - in & around Bandra. What (in brief) is your message to the youth of Bandra? We are fortunate to have an increasing youth power in Bandra – and many are into activism. My message to them : Involve yourself into some sport, have a job (or business) & get a good education. I am already involved in 'campus connect' (see details in my website: www.ashishshelar.in) and will always aggressively represent your issues & stand by you. Do you have any plans to improve the safety factor of senior citizens, women & children in & around Bandra? This issue of law & order should be addressed to the State Government. Today, the security scene in Bandra, Khar & SantaCruz is worsening – with chain-snatchings at Carter Road - robbers who come from behind on bikes. In SantaCruz & West Avenue, I have seen cases in my constituency, where senior citizen couples have been burnt alive. Prostitution & corresponding

Do you feel Bandra will benefit with the presence of a strong & un-biased local media? Bandra has a different temperament – it has the temperament for an interactive local newspaper. So, I would say this is the best idea. But, it can be better if it is un-biased - and I feel that Bandra Buzz is trying to do the same. Only, there should be (more) interaction with readers, which Bandra Buzz should take up - and I will put forward my first stake for the same, if Bandra Buzz comes up with such local interactive sessions - not only as the local media, but for the betterment of Bandra. This needs to be done - and I will be the first person to come forward. As per your website, you claim to have done a lot for the people of Bandra, Khar & S'Cruz, as Municipal Councilor. As of today, how confident are you of winning after the upcoming elections? As regards the BMC Elections, I am very hopeful & confident. I believe that what I have delivered can get me victory. My website not only says what I have done. If you go through it carefully, you will see my vision. What is lacking now, is the fulfilment of this vision. There needs to be more statutory powers given to somebody like me who is in a position to deliver the same with whole-hearted commitment. My Vision Statement spells what still needs to be done for Bandra, Khar & SantaCruz. So, the people know what I have already done. But, the vision still needs to be fulfilled - and there needs to be a good MP, MLA & good councillors at the helm of affairs, who can think of the interest of common citizens. I think, me & my party can fulfil this. So, (in brief) what exactly is your Vision for Bandra? There are various points that are spelt out - starting from clearing Bandra Station from hawkers to seeing that the sky-walk is safe...... from having Water Games at the Carter Road Promenade to protection of heritage structures. For this to be fulfilled, we need different agencies to get involved. The Corporation alone cannot do it. A councillor cannot do it alone. We need the support of the PWD, Airport Authorities, Railways, Courts... and I feel that I can do this, if people decide to empower me in the upcoming elections. Ashish Shelar was interviewed by Bandra Buzz, in view of the upcoming Corporation elections.
