The Salsette Catholic Co-op Housing Society Ltd. a Society which is 97 years old and consisting of 201 plots, spread over 150 acres in Bandra (W); has been awarded the ‘Best Run Housing Society’ in Mumbai, by the Government of Maharashtra – 1st in Mumbai and 3rd in Maharashtra. The society got an award certificate and a cheque of Rs. 25,000/The award ceremony was held on 19th June 2015 at Kolhapur. The prestigious awards were presented to Mr. Capt Ivan Mendonca – Chairman and Mr Cornel K. Gonsalves – Secretary of the Society, by the Hon. Minister of Revenue & Excise - Shri Eknath Khadse and the Hon. Minister of Co-operation - Shri Chandrakant Patil, at a glittering function at Kolhapur. This event was attended by over 75,000 persons from all over Maharashtra. Bandra Buzz interviewed Cornel & Capt Ivan at the Salsette Office (located at Bandra Gymkhana) and got some interesting insights regarding this award.

CARMELITES PLAY FOOTBALL FOR STATE Bandra's very own Apostolic Carmel High School has a little more to be proud about, with two of their students playing for the State of Maharashtra. Saffron Dabre & Gauhar Mithaiwala (currently in 9th std), both play for Maharashtra in the Under 13 as a goalkeeper - and Under 14, as a centre midfielder, respectively. Bandra Buzz caught up with these two promising young athletes as they shared a bit about themselves and their journey and their thoughts and opinions.

How did you girls come about playing football? Saffron: I came to this school three years ago, this is my forth year, I saw others playing football and got an interest in it and started playing football. Gauhar: My brother used to play before so I took an interest in playing and then one day Sir Cozy (Cosmos Vaz) asked us "Can you play football?", I said "Yes" - and have been playing since the 3rd standard. What's you division of your day between football and the rest of your duties, like say studies and play? Saffron: School, practice, rest and studies. Gauhar: School, practice, tuitions, play (football with friends) & studies. We have practice usually after school at 2pm on Tuesdays & Saturdays - and at6.30am on Thursdays. How did you girls come about playing for Maharashtra? Saffron: We have D.S.O., after our team qualified for districts, five girls were selected, from Carmel's. I was the only one to get selected. From there, we had to go to Wardha for more selections, where 18 girls were selected. I was selected as goalkeeper. Gauhar: Sir Cozy told me that he selected two girls from our school to go for selections to be held at the Cooperage. The results were announced on the 3rd of May and I got selected as a centre midfielder. How many games and against whom (which states) have you played? Saffron: On the 2nd of Feb we reached Guwahati and the matches started the following day. Our first match was against Chandigarh, our second match was against Telangana, third against Mizoram and forth against Haryana. We had to play four matches to qualify for the quarter finals. Our team (Maharashtra) came in forth. Gauhar: I have played 5 games against Uttarakhand, Manipur, Haryana and Jharkhand.

Any future plans of playing for the state later on and perhaps India even? Saffron: Actually it does not depend on us, because every year there are selections & we can only play for Maharashtra, if we get selected. But if I get a chance to play for India or Maharashtra, I would surely not miss the opportunity. Gauhar: I would like to play for India, if an opportunity knocks at my door. Can you girls tell us a little about your experience playing for the state? Saffron: Firstly, it was an opportunity to play with different teams and learn new techniques in football. We come to know different people from different states and learn about their languages, lifestyles and culture. Gauhar: I was really excited, as it was my first time to play at this level. I made a few friends and learnt new skills, tips and techniques. What advice would you like to give other girls out there, who would one day like to play at the state level? Saffron: Keep trying till you succeed, never give up and always try for the best.

Gauhar: Never give up because I got selected on my third try, I was rejected twice before. Are there any people in particular you would like to thank for assisting you reach the level that you are at? Saffron: I want to thank all that have taken the trouble to get me where I am. My School Principal - Sister Pearlanne, Sir Cozy (Cosmos Vaz), my entire football team who supported me through all these years - and my family and relatives for their blessings. Gauhar: I would like to thank my School Principal - Sister Pearlanne who supported and encouraged me to reach to the level I am at, my coach Sir Cozy and my parents. When will you be playing for the state next? Saffron & Gauhar: The D.S.O. tournaments will start anytime from July onwards, so hopefully then. Bandra West Football League kicks off on July 26 The 12th edition of the Bandra West Football League will kick off at the Dr. Norman Lewis Supari Talao municipal grounds from 8 am on 26th July 2015. All participants in the league must be residents of Bandra West, with matches played on Sundays and bank holidays only. 16 teams will fight it out for the Premier Division honours, while 12 teams and additional new teams play for the Division I title. A MoU was signed in the presence of Hon'ble Minister for Railways, Shri Suresh Prabhu, with a vision to develop Bandra Heritage Station into a tourist and cultural quarter between Ministry of Railways & UNESCO in a function held at Bandra Railway station on Friday, 26th June 2015. This Memorandum of Understanding was jointly signed by Mr. Shigeru Aoyagi, Director and UNESCO Representative to India & Shri Manu Goyal, Executive Director (Heritage) of Railway Board. In the beginning, Shri S K Sood, General Manager, Western Railway welcomed all the guests present on this occasion. Shri Gopal Shetty, Hon'ble Member of Parliament; Shri Ashish Shelar, Hon'ble MLA; Ms Alka Kerkar, Hon'ble DY Mayor of Mumbai; Shri Shailendra Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager of Mumbai Central division and various senior railway officers were also present on this historic occasion. A short film depicting various heritage aspects of Bandra station was also displayed on this occasion. Bandra Railway Station in Mumbai is a listed Grade I heritage building and one of the key landmarks of the area. As part of the study, a conservation plan will be devel-

oped to restore the heritage building, as well as a strategic plan to redesign the surrounding public spaces to improve traffic flow, signage, pedestrian paths, public amenities and cultural vibrancy. The study

LETTERS TO EDITOR SLUMS, PARKING, BEGGARS... Dear Ms. Poonam Mahajan, it is pleasure to have a dynamic personality like you to lead our constituency. It was indeed me who was most happy when I heard the news that BJP candidate won the seat and in particular you have won the seat. However would like to highlight that the problems faced by resident of Bandra Reclamation have increased a lot in one last year and have gone unnoticed / unobjected. Before giving you a brief description of problems faced by Bandra Reclamation, first I would like to introduce myself. I am Jay Chheda resident of Bandra Reclamation and currently Secretary of our society Prasad Suyash Co-op Hsg Society. In professional capacity I work with a multinational bank and I am a regular tax payer. Summary of problems faced: 1) Nuisance of slums - Whenever I have to drive from Mahim to my place, I have to do keep honking so that kids playing on the road spare me some space and get aside. Goats roaming around move little for me to pass and elders just move a bit to make way for my car. People have just not built houses on government property they have all facilities like electricity, cable, water etc. Further, they have now taken over the footpath for their establishments and set up chairs, cot and relax on the footpath/road and their kids play on the main roads as well. This leaves very less space for commuters to move around.

There are various common parks/ gardens which can be utilised by these kids. Everyday, I see new slums coming up. Also, alongside the other side of the road, new slums have been built up. The area below the bridge too has come up with slums. Even more surprising is that our current area MLA stays just opposite to this area and have not taken any serious action against this. 2) Parking of Transport vehicles - Both side of the roads are taken away by parking of rickshaws and commercial tempos owned by people staying in slums. RTO office just 100 mts away from this site has given a blind eye to this which is more surprising. 3) Commercial establishment in Transit camp - I believe transit camps should have housing and not commercial establishment but to surprise it will have more commercial establishment than housing. I am not sure if all these activities are legal in nature. 5) Beggars nuisance - You to see lot of beggars roaming around in and out of area and mostly bus stops are their new house. Sincere request please consider this as request from entire building and people staying in our area. We have laid hopes on you to reduce this nuisance and let people of reclamation stay peacefully and that was the main reason people of reclamation have voted for you and laid blind trust on you and Mr. Ashish Shelar. not disappoint us and we will see action immediately on receipt of this email. Jay Chheda TREE TRIMMINGS Dear Constituents of Ward No 96, I have been persistently following up with the ward officer / Asst. Commissioner for deputing trucks to lift the tree cuttings. Recently I was also part of the delegation along with my Ex-MLA Baba Siddiqui & Co-Corporators to address this issue with the Asst. Commissioner of our ward. On one hand the corporation has increased property taxes but have not provided the citizens with amenities. There has been a backlog of around 130 trucks in my ward for lifting the tree trimmings. July in Bandra this year seems to be just cloudy – with no much rain. Dry July - just like an extension of summer. With the festive season starting soon, people are planning a lot these days. Bandraites are making the most of this dry spell to shop – as can be seen from the tremendous crowds at Hill Road & Linking Road. This is an excellent time to unwind. Weekends are ideal for one day or overnight picnics to resorts around Mumbai. But, the upcoming BMC Elections next year have started simmering scenes at various venues. This is AGM time – precious planning has already started getting groups to gather

at happening hubs. Housing Societies, NGO’s, Clubs, Gymkhanas, Groups and other entities are already hyper active – presentations and balancing accounts are on focus. Being the most happening suburb, Bandra’s mood swings are maximum – starting now. Politicians play on the sentiments of people to further their personal agenda. They identify key people who have countless contacts. A network of ‘Judases’ spring up - as active committee members in social groups; posing as concerned citizens. Inroads into new territories are made by political parties funding projects – civic, sports or something that seems neutral. Being subtle is key to these stealth operations. An Evening interview with DJ Russell Bandra Buzz sat down with DJ Russel at his Bandra residence on a rainy Thursday evening , speaking to us, DJ Russel shared insights about his life, his thoughts, opinions and plans.

So why a DJ? you started your career at a time when most people wanted to join engineering & commerce related jobs? They told me I could be anything I wanted to be. I wanted to make people happy. So I became a Disc Jockey! When I’m asked what I do for a living, I actually say, I make people happy. I was always passionate about music. As a kid I used to play with cassettes and records, and even spool decks and turntables, trying to figure out what makes each tick. Music and sound is basically just in my blood. So it was a natural progression to turn to DJing once I was old enough to hold a job i.e. straight out of school. I own turntables and spin records even today. Old school just does it for me. I have tried my hand at a corporate job and it just wasn’t for me. Music anchors me. Was there any pressure? There was no pressure over me becoming a DJ. Initially, out of curiosity, my parents wanted to know about my profession and there was a problem with my late or shall I say, ‘all day’ hours. But over time, they got used to it and all was well. How many years has it been? I started working in the sound industry around 1994. This included going for shows, handling equipment, learning on the job basically. By 1995 I started playing professionally. How do you remember DJing in ‘95 and what’s the difference you see in DJing now and then? Back in 1995, buying music was expensive. I would collect and collect money from every show and then purchase the 'NOW' or ‘Max’ or ‘Remixland’ series. Recording a CD was a big thing back then and once people started doing that, well it cost anywhere between Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500. I still remember the first recorded CD I purchased cost me a whopping INR 950! And I still have this CD with me so many years down the line! Today, availability and accessibility is the name of the game. Music is at your fingertips, at a snap or just a click away.

Today, most DJs play from laptops or pen drives due to the compactness of these devices. When we started back then, it was on cassettes, records and CD's and we would lug around these huge case logic files with all out music in it. Even CD players were normal CD players – the Sony S45s. Professional DJ CD players with pitch control, the first of its kind, i.e. the Denon twin deck DJ CD player DN-2000F, came out here in India somewhere in the late 90s. It was tougher to play back then than now. But it was fun, because we never stopped learning or wanted to stop. The industry has opened up today. A lot. Do you have any preference of music you play for the crowd? For me, my crowd and the vibe I get from a place is what leads to the music I play. Clients have their preferences, but many a time I have to look at a crowd and play. A client might want strictly English music, but a crowd might prefer Bollywood to shake a leg to. So I play accordingly. That being said, if I was told, ‘Russel go play what you like,’ I would like to start out with some Classic Rock and Retro and then pick up with some Deep House and New Disco tunes and end of the night with s o m e banging bouncy Progress i v e Tunes.

then, it was the genre that everyone listened to. It is also one of the hardest genres to mix. And that challenge in itself attracts me to the genre. It is an acquired taste and even today there are only a handful of DJs who really spin great retro. I can honestly say, I’m happy to be part of that club. Could you name a few of the clubs you played at? Spinning since 1995, I have held a residency at clubs across Mumbai. Boat Club, Hawaiian Shack and Velocity are just some of the big names. I spin at a lot of guest nights at various clubs from Blue Frog Mumbai & Pune, Irish House, Indigo, and Shiro, to Café Zoe, The Little Door, F-Bar, The Den and Barking Deer to name a few. Do you play only in Mumbai or do gigs outside the city? I gig all around the country. It really depends on what club or corporate gig I am called to spin at. I've played in Nasik, Pune, Goa, Bangalore, Mangalore, Kochi, Jaipur, Delhi, Hyderabad, Calcutta, among other places. I have basically played across India, from the most obscure ‘off the beaten track' small towns to the 'Big City Lights'.

The course is generally 15 classes, spread over a month or two, depending on each student’s needs and wants. But I generally do not let it go beyond two months. My course involves a lot of modules that are not taught at the beginner level, including PR, putting oneself in the market, health of a DJ, etc. Someone called you an award wining DJ. What’s the story with that? I believe, that accolades are not proof positive that you are good at what you do. Having said that, winning the 'Second Runner Up' in the Retro Category at the 'My Fav Awards' 2014-2015 was a vindication of over two decades of hard work. I can’t deny that it brought me a sense of fulfillment and content. So, the Classic Question, what annoys you as a DJ? One of the first lessons I teach my students, is how NOT TO GET ANNOYED with patrons! But seriously, people who think they know more than the DJ really grates my nerves. How would you feel if I came to your office and told you how to do your job? Also, when people hum a song and expect you to not only hear their humming over all the music but also know the song, that’s irritating. Thirdly, when people come to a place to party without a clue what kind of night it is or who is playing and expect some other type of music to be played specifically for them. That’s something that would exasperate anyone. And lastly but definitely not the least, what can really get my goat is when people throw money and expect you or force you to play their songs. It is just so uncouth. So what can we expect from DJ Russel in the near future? What’s in the pipeline? The future holds a lot. Since Boat Club shut I have been freelancing and spinning in places across the country. While these gigs will continue, a residency at an upcoming retro club in Mumbai is in the pipeline. Keeping my fingers crossed for the road ahead.

You had come up as a Retro artist. Can you tell us about that? Retro just doesn’t go out of style. Be it English or Bollywood Retro, it gets a crowd pumping. And when you lay your trump cards at the right time, you can really get the crowd grooving. When I started back

Over the years the competition has increased, with the number of DJ's. Can you give us an insight into any problems faced with that? A lot of new entrants in the industry are under quoting the market. When clients choose money over quality, this often leads to a corrosion of the quality aspect of music that goes out to partygoers. Secondly, there is also a lot of unhealthy competition in the market today. There is enough space for everyone. Yet this belief is not shared by all and it leads to a lot of negativity in the industry. Ours is supposed to be an industry that makes people happy. And yet inwardly we erode our own space. Tell us a little about DJ Russel the teacher. I've been nurturing hands and hearts that want to be Disc Jockeys since the early 2000's, that’s a little over a decade now. I

Lastly, any advice for others that would want to take up DJing as a career? Firstly, keep an open mind as to why you are becoming a DJ. That clarity of thought will take you far. Secondly, aspiring DJ's please understand technology is not always your best friend. Sometimes old school is just the way you will have to go. Learn it in advance. Thirdly, never think you are bigger than the next guy, even if that guy has lesser experience than you do or underestimate your ability over the other guy, even if that other guy is Calvin Harris! Lastly, create your own identity. There are already a host of famous DJs populating consoles across the world. No one wants what’s already available. 9th July was a night to remember for all the wrong reasons for Vikaas Kalantri a resident of Hill Road, Bandra. He and his wife were driving their car towards Pali Hill at about 11.45pm when suddenly in between the distance of Candies and Learners Academy something was thrown at their car from the left side and a substance (red like in color) covered their car including their wind screen. On his wife's immediate insistence they did not stop. Only a few days ago Vikaas's wife had heard about a gang operating in Delhi that would throw a substance at cars on the highways and then when the motorists stopped to clean the same they would be robbed. They continued up, turning on the wipers to clear the windscreen but the

screen went even more blurred on doing so, struggling to see and not stopping they made their way to Vikaas's aunt's residence who lived at Pali Hill and only on reaching

the safety of the same did he stop and get out of the car to try and clean the windscreen, but using water with cloth and tissues did not help, instead only made it a

more gummy like mess. Having no sucess Vikaas cancelled all plans and made his way directly and quickly home, windows down to see the road and avoiding any dark shortcuts and lonely lanes. Going from Pali to Carter Road and sticking to the most used roads. It took Vikaas three days to clean the mess as the substance would not come off with water but only become worse, the mess was finally removed using Acetone. Since the incident Vikaas says he has used the road but only at day time and not at night. Vikaas had made a post about the same on Facebook soon after the incident took place and the post has seen a wide circulation of over ten thousand shares since. Wayne Lemos

Public Toilet On Drain & Drinking Water Pipes Bandra epidemic may start from Kadeshwari The residents of Kadeshwari Mandir Road, Bandra West have a potential health hazard that could have a ripple effect to surrounding areas. There are two Public Toilets (viz. One Pay Toilet of 2 storeys building and another Free Public Toilet, which is unusable, unhygienic and not at all maintained) which are built over Drinking Water Pipes and Storm Water drains situated opposite Clifford House. In case of a leak from the toilet or drain to the drinking water main pipe, an avoidable situation can occur, starting an epidemic. With the current monsoon season, this could compound the effect. Thousands of innocent people’s health is at stake. The solution is simple: Just relocate it to an open reclaimed BMC, behind the above mentioned two public toilets. This open reclaimed BMC land is being misused by some slum lords to park trucks & auto rickshaws and some illegal garages & temporary sheds have been built. The shifting of the above mentioned two public toilets would be a great relief for the people

of Kadeshwari Mandir Road, since this would: - avoid water logging, - improve health & hygiene - broaden the road, thus reduce traffic congestion. Moreover the Pay Public toilet is being used for the following purposes: - Washing trucks, motor bikes, auto rickshaw and taxis; - Ground floor one section is given on rent for residential purposes; - There is a major consumption of drugs by young kids in the pay public toilet. There are already several other toilets at Kadeshwari Mandir Road, which are well maintained and used. These two toilets are a threat to people’s life, since it is built on a drinking water main pipe, which supplies water to thousands of people living here. It has blocked the storm water drains, which increases the chances of an epidemic Malaria, Dengue and other water borne dis-

And while skating isn’t an Olympic sport yet, it may well be a part of the 2020 Olympics if all goes well. For Ajay, passion for skating made him leave his cushy job in the private sector & follow his dreams. And this hunger just keeps growing. The icing on the cake was when, more recently, the central character of Lucky Sir played by Saqib Saleemin a Bollywood flick, Hawaa Hawaai was modelled on Ajay’s life as an inline skating coach, which, incidentally is the world’s first movie revolving around skating as a theme. In the movie which was directed by the acclaimed Amole Gupte, Ajay also co-designed all the skating related scenes, besides training the actors for them. The Skate Academy, his latest venture, focuses on creating a world class academy that produces champions while inculcating the spirit of healthy competition. From skating in the bylanes near his humble abode close to Shivaji Park in Dadar, to getting his name in the Limca Book of Records as a world record holder, to becoming one of India’s finest skating instructors and India’s first international skating examiner, life’s come a full circle for Ajay Shivlani with his latest offering - The Skate Academy. Back then in the day, when getting a pair of skates seemed as celebrated an event as purchasing a new television set, Ajay’s first pair of skates was an improvised one, fitted with shoelaces and some padding for comfort and the right fit. This self-trained pro-skater’s daily routine as a young kid consisted of jumping over open drains and dodging pedestrians and the unruly Mumbai traffic. But his true potential was only revealed the time he casually entered himself into a local skating competition, where he beat the others without breaking a sweat. From then on, he only pushed himself further & Mumbai to Lonavala on skates was soon a routine, for which he held an unofficial record of covering the longest distance in a single day on skates from Mumbai to Pune. Breaking all barriers, in 1993, while in his 20s, Ajay etched his name in the Limca Book of Records, covering the longest distance ever on roller skates while skating between Mumbai & New Delhi, while passing through several Indian states, in a joint

record with his childhood friend. But his hunger & passion for skating could be seen when he skated from Leh to Khardung La weathering unforgiving climatic conditions. Skating now wasn’t just a passion, it was his life. True to this passion, in 1997 he alongwith his friend and partner Dhiraj Utmani, started an institute dedicated to imparting skating lessons to children around Mumbai. To bolster his credentials, he achieved his ICP Certification as a qualified

instructor from Miami. And the results of his hard work can be seen in his students, who look up to him with the utmost respect. Many of his students have won laurels at the district, state and national skating championships. More recently, his students, along with Team LXT bagged 7 gold and a total of 14 medals representing India at the Hong Kong International Speed Skating Championship, who also figure in the world rankings, a first for India. The first every CuriousCity Challenge in Bandra went very well as 40 excited participants came on a Sunday and enjoyed their evening - exploring the hidden corners of Bandra and meeting new people. The challenge started at Almeida Park at 5 pm. Teams of 4 were made and they were given a set of twisted clues that they had to crack and then get to the location to do a fun task. It was a difficult trail and tasks involved interacting with locals to get to know a little bit about their food and culture too! Everyone knows about the best bars and food places in Bandra, but very few know that the oldest cross in Mumbai is here and that the East Indians and Portuguese left their culinary secrets that are still practised in nooks and corners of the suburb! The whole idea behind putting people in a team of strangers was to break the ice. By the end of the hunt, they all become friends with their teams & also are excited to share their experiences with other teams and compare tasks. The winners for the Bandra CuriousCity Challenge was a team of boys - Alexandra Kuruvilla, Manish Golchha, Rohit Srimal and Savin Vijay. Sunday morning, 14th June 2015 saw a group of grey haired 75 year old Stanislites gathered in the Bandra Gymkhana restaurant for a reunion lunch. Some came with their spouses. The rainy weather played spoilsport for many – so the attendance was curtailed. Yet, those who made it were very eager to meet their classmates after a very long time. This was bonhomie at its best. Amongst those present were Roger Pereira, Hoshang Vakil, Fr. Fidelis (Guy D’Lima), Capt. Bede D’Silva, Major Leon Fonseca, Dr. Rui Fernandez, Cuthbert D’Souza & Oscar Martin. HOW TO PROTECT YOUR KIDS FROM MONSOON AILMENTS

HYGIENE: • Hand and feet hygiene is of utmost importance among children during monsoons. Make sure your little ones diligently follow the habit of washing hands and feet thoroughly with soap each time they come back home from outside. • Playing in puddles is a lot of fun, but mostly the water in puddles in stagnant and contaminated. Advice your children to not play in dirty water. • Add a little anti-septic like neem (nimtree/ Indian Lilac) oil (or boiling neem leaves in water) to your kids bath. Neem is very effective in warding off germs and bacteria. • Dry the towels used by your children thoroughly after bath. Joints, underarms, areas between toes and fingers need to be wiped dry to prevent fungal infections or skin irritations. • Make sure you keep your kid’s nails short and clean during the rains. Exposure to water and mud can easily deposit dirt under the nails. • Regularly wash your kids’ shoes with water. Disinfectant and dry them well. • Remind your children to always wash hands before eating. A hand sanitizer should be kept handy, in case they’re unable to wash their hands, especially when travelling. FOOD & WATER: • Avoid outside food.
