Bandra Boy Rahil Noorani zooms into “JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R-Cup”
M
aking waves in motorsports is 21 year old Mount Mary resident who has been selected from among 1600 races drivers from all over the country for the second round of the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R-Cup. Rahil got into racing because of his passion for cars & racing as a child. He first went go karting at a young age of 8 at a race track in Mumbai & he just loved it so much that he would frequent the track every weekend. Rahil was always an avid F1 fan & never missed a race as a child. In 2009 he met a friend who was into racing &
had raced for the Malaysian A1 GP team. He explained to him all about racing & how much fun it was & from then on there was no stopping him to make his dream come true. Immediately he did a training programme in Coimbatore at the Kari Motor Speedway & was hooked on! The whole of 2009 he tested the Formula LGB & Formula Rolon. At the start of 2010 he decided to take part in the Formula Rolon Championship & was racing for Meco Motorsport. To his bad luck the cars in general had a technical snag & that played a huge issue on reliability. However he
did not give up hope, it was a great learning experience for him & he tried doing his best in every race. In the final round in December 2010, he had gained enough experience to bag a win & went for it - and won it. All he can say that winning the race was an amazing feeling. Especially if you are a Rookie. This year he will be racing with 21 young drivers from all India in the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R-Cup. The selection process was very competitive with 1600 entrants from all over India. In the overall final selection he was ranked 3rd.
This year he says “It’s going to be very competitive & I will be focussed on winning the championship only. For the same, I’m also following a fitness programme to keep me in shape thanks to the fitness camp organized by Volkswagen Motorsport”. The first race in on Sunday, June 19th in Coimbatore. He is very much excited to know that the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R-Cup races will also be held at India’s only JPSI F1 Buddh International Circuit in Noida. Bandra Buzz wishes Rahil all the best in these races in the future. - David Vaz

Dear Readers, With vacations over and monsoon clouds just over the horizon, we have a new season of energy to get us forward in life. The upcoming BMC elections scheduled for early 2012 has got all contenders starting their drives towards better visibility of their activities. We at Bandra Buzz offer our readers an un-biased overview of those standing for elections, by inter-
Edit Page viewing them – in our series: KNOW YOUR CANDIDATE. This month we have interviewed our local elected representative – Baba Siddique, MLA. We plan to interview all other candidates, as a countdown to D-day, so that we get a better insight and make an informed decision when we vote. Calling all other candidates – who will be standing for elections. This is your platform to showcase to the people of Bandra your current activities & future plans, if & when you come to power. The Lokpal or ‘Joke’pal Bill is sailing on rough waters. Corruption is being taken to a new level – with the corrupt justifying their actions. People are getting restless. This monsoon session will see scenes of unrest across India, until we have a truly democratic system in place – with everyone accountable! Bandra roads in general have improved, except for certain spots. The BMC is doing a better job, with drains cleaned before the rains. Except for times when the high tide & a heavy downpour coincide, flooding should not occur. Wishing you all the best in whatever you are doing right now. - Merck D’Silva
Announcement For the past 3 years the Latin Mass has been celebrated on the 1st Sunday of every month. All are welcome!! - Fr. Juan S.J. Venue: Loft of St. Peters Church Bandra 3rd July, 2011 - 12 noon.
Letters to the Editor TRAFFIC WOES I have read Meena R's letter in Bandra Buzz, May 2011 in respect of changing the traffic to one way on D'Monte Park Road which should head to Pali Hill. Please note that St. Paul's Road is already a one-way heading to Perry Road and you can either turn right or left to Pali Hill. More importantly, we who stay on St. Paul's Road need to access St. Paul's Road through D'Monte Park Road. - Cornel Gonsalves BMC Demolitions This has reference to Ms. Pauline Fernandes comments on the captioned subject. If Ms. Aftab Siddique is indeed in the fore front in the removal of illegal hawkers and demolition of illegal constructions in Bandra West in particular and Mumbai in general - and has made remarkable acheivements, then I wonder where are these acheivements to be seen and improvements experienced? If one passes St. Peter's Road, Bazar Road, Hill Road, Pali Market, and the road leading from Lucky Hotel to Bandra Station and roads leading to / from Khar Station, you will surely observe that there are hawkers by the dozens. During peak hours one cannot move easily on these roads and there is always a traffic jam. So what acheivements is Ms.
Pauline Fermamdes is talking about. On the land ceeded by the St. Joseph Convent for road widenning, what do we have on this land ? Shops - and what has Ms. Aftab Siddique done about it? If the so called social activists are doing remarkable work (other than demolishing crosses and temples) then Bandra and Khar would have been free of illegal hawking, slums and illegal errection of shops and their extentions on foot paths. One also wonders whether Ms. Aftab Siddique has noticed the new eating joint at Carter Road near Oceanic Building. It is pertinent to note that the new eating joint and shops have been erected on the land which was ceeded by the owners of the bungalow adjacent to these structures. With no apparent improvement in sight I wonder whether Ms. Pauline Fernandes has moved arround Bandra and Khar on foot recently? If she has, then she would not have praised the theoritcal acheivements of Ms. Aftab Siddique. The demolition of crosses was nothing short of selective elimination. - Wilbert D'Silva

The Hills Are Alive, Indeed .... with the sweet Sound Of Music !
In the last week, St Andrews Auditorium has seen a flurry of activity with theatre enthusiasts from all over the city coming in large numbers to revisit a Timeless Classic - The Sound of Music. The Sound of Music has been theatrically adored across generations and decades, owing largely to its music and scripting which is unrivaled even today. Raell Padamsee’s Ace Productions now presents this show to the Indian audience with city kids, bringing the back the magic of the music. While the play itself is lit up with outstanding acting by the cast, the centerfold for this play lies in its music, which was arranged by Merlin D’souza. All songs were sung ‘live’ by the cast on the days of the performances. The songs brought back not only nostalgic memories for the audience, but also goose bumps at the
kind of vocal range that was on showcase. One of the most stellar performances belonged to Marianne D’cruz-Aiman whose rendition of ‘Climb Every Mountain’ was pitch perfect and lteft the audience shouting “encore”. Dalip Tahil - a long time actor, touched the hearts of the audience with his song ‘Edelweiss’, that almost always was followed by a standing ovation. Delna Modi who had the massive shoes of Julie Andrews to fill, did so with poise and all while hitting the notes to ‘So long, farewelll’ and ‘My Favorite Things’, crowd favorites for sure. Director Advait Hazarat and choreographers Karla Singh and Sandip Soparrkar, have done a great job of keeping all the acts and dance sequences tight, whilst making the actors very comfortable on stage. The kids from across the city, reprising the roles of the Von Trapp
children were standouts on stage and reminded you yet again that talent knows no age group. The children varied from the ages of 5 to 15, yet there were unperturbed by the bright lights and held their own while singing ‘Do-Re-Mi’ & ‘The Lonely Goatherd’. Over 2000 children from 20 schools were auditioned with only a talented lot being shortlisted. There were daily 3 to 4 hour rehearsals that demanded hard work and commitment from these kids. A number of songs also showcased children from various NGO’s, something the producer was very keen to include in the musical. From the main cast of children, seven of them, (who are certainly stars in their own right), are from Bandra. Simone Ann Alvares who took on the role of the animated Brigitta, received words of praise from the press & film fraternity as well. Jordan
D’silva (Kurt), Aidan D’silva (Friedrich), Akeesha Rodrigues / Danielle D’silva (Marta), Kimberly Van Drine (Gretel) & Eden D’souza (Louisa) were the other children that did justice to the casting and their titles as ‘Future Stars of Bandra’. The audience at these shows were not just children, but their parents as well. There were many older age groups that came out to revisit a Classic. Inspite of the age differences, the adulation was well spread with constant praise being shed on the children & the slick direction. The Sound of Music is seen as of the most ambitious musical showcases in the city in recent times. While the Sound Of Music continues to ‘sell out’ auditoriums, the play has struck home for everyone that is a part of it - be it a family, with friends, or, even by yourself. - Sean D’Mello

Remembering Michael
T
he fascination with the magic began in 1990 when I watched Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time”. People who noticed my interest began gifting me with books, magazines, posters, official MJ calendars, videos… anything. I watched the videos & features on VHS & MTV over & over again observing intently, learning – imagining the moves in my mind’s eye; I would attempt the moonwalk during studies…one day I could stand on my toes — I wasn’t practicing it — it just happened…I knew how to spread my weight out & hold the toe pose long enough for a snap to be taken! In 1993 the MTV announced a competition: submit a video of a Michael dance impersonation & win tickets to the Dangerous World Tour. Neighbors & friends helped out, loaning me a wig; we had a makeup artiste, a videographer & outfits. I don’t know what became of the video because the Tour was cancelled when child abuse allegations surfaced against Michael. I wasn’t too affected at that point about what was happening with the real Michael Jackson. For me it was just the passion, the dance & music. A few years later, at the Bandra Gym, when the music switched to ‘They Don’t Care About Us’, I broke into dance, people stopped to watch, forming an applauding circle. When it was over, veteran musician Maurice Conceicio insisted that I perform at his next musicclub get-together. I performed Billie Jean & Maurice thundered, “[He] brought the house down!” More stage shows ensued. I enjoyed it initially, but then began to feel the pressure of anticipation. To explain: If you watch a Michael Jackson concert, he does not dance all the time; it’s the star presence, special effects, gargantuan stage props, pyrotechnics & illusions that keeps people enthralled. But what would they expect from me? Would they bore if I didn’t do enough of the moonwalk or danced enough? These thoughts began playing on me as I performed until at a point I was beginning to dance for people & not for the passion & began to overexert. During later performances I would put in instrumental breaks to rest between the first & second part of the act. I had the audience in frenzy, but it was becoming hard to condition my mind back to when it was all about the passion. After 2002, I had begun focusing more on guitar & rock music. I had all the memorabilia but no idol anymore, his career had darkened with the scandals & I felt myself distancing from him. & with the world, we moved on; some writing him off, some hoping he would make a comeback, some like me, moving to other genres & interests. Then in the morning of the 25th of June 2009, I woke up to a text message: Michael Jackson dead! Yes, there were differing opinions on his character & what had come to pass over the last few years of his life, but do we really know the truth in such cases or do we just, as humans flock to
Remember the time......
slander, prefer to believe the bad side of the story? I believe we should remain objective: The sales figures & the outstanding record deals speak for themselves. You cannot argue with the commercial success & the genius of his musical influence & its impact on the whole world! He brought down the Internet when news of his death exploded across the world! I don’t expect any musician to be capable of that nowadays. Visit any place on the planet & someone will have heard of Michael Jackson. His videos — no, revolutionary short-films — are groundbreak-
T
ing. The hard work is apparent: choosing 9 songs out of a potential 300 for the album Thriller, beatboxing most of his later tracks, turning the 20-minute Superbowl Halftime show into an energetic special effects extravaganza that pulled the highest viewership ever! When “This Is It” was released to a limited 2 week screening, posthumously, even to the newer fans & critics, he had reaffirmed his standing as the greatest entertainer of all time. Watching the Official Michael Jackson Flash Mob tributes on You Tube, I thought to myself: no one can bring people together like that… if you look at the flash mob in Bucharest everyone seemed so happy; all their daily troubles forgotten for the few minutes that Beat It blared out across the boulevards. I believe we write our future. A person lives his or her life sometimes doing things that may not seem correct within our generally-accepted principles of what is moral & right. We can decide if future generations get the message of unity, love, peace, environmental protection, entertainment or get the message of a tarnished individual. If each of us cares about our children & their children, & wish they live in a better world, what message would we want to pass on to them? We should pass on The Entertainment of Michael Jackson, so that they too may come together in his music & maybe one day that dream of peace, happiness in imagination & love will be a reality just as almost all of them were, to the man-child from Gary, Indiana! - Douglas Misquita
he Michael Jackson Mystique, says music journalist Verus Ferreira, is a blend of special effects, magnificent choreography, exciting new music and an unstoppable marketing blitz. Computer animation, multi-media, kathak dancers, the maddest of visuals, Michael Jackson had presented it all in his freaky repertoire. His albums have made history, his earnings, are a matter of higher Maths and his quirks and kinks are a subject for psychologists. The Michael Jackson story is the stuff of which legends are made. 25th June 2011 marks the second death anniversary of Michael Jackson. Here’s a select all time favorite top five songs and top five videos to what made him ‘The Peter Pan of Pop. TOP 5 SONGS Earth Song - A touching and meaningful song that talks about the world today and how we have destroyed it by being selfish. The song opens with an impressive piano score and moves on end with a full band with excellent vocals from Jackson . While his upbeat songs have dance beats pulling you on the dancefloor, his slow songs too strike a note in their own way. Thriller - This would’ve surely taken the number one spot, but the song comes close on the heels of ‘Beat It’ which also has its own share of memorable bars. ‘Thriller’ had incredible vocals, mind blowing beats and a catchy groove that was ahead of its time. Beat It - An impressive beat with a music score that was racy, jumpy and over the top, ‘Beat it’ won the hearts of millions of MJ fans when it was released and many tried to imitate the moonwalk dance steps. I’ll be there for you - A song which has been covered by many artists after its first tryst with success with MJ in the Jackson 5. The most common & popular cover is Mariah Carey’s version which is still loved today. Jackson sang the song with his whole heart and soul, his emotions coming out so well in the song.
Black or White - A bit controversial due to MJ’s image of changing himself from black to white. While he was promoting the song with words such as … it don’t matter if your black or white….’, he went ahead & did just the same thing. He went iin for cosmetic surgery that gave him a white complexion. The song however had marvelous break beats. It was also a very catchy song that caught on very easily.
TOP 5 MUSIC VIDEOS:
Thriller (1983) - This is one of the most expensive music videos in music history. Back in 1983 Michael Jackson had to pay a whooping sum of $ 1,000,000! Believe it or not, Michael Jackson wanted to destroy this music video, but producers stopped him. During this music video, Jackson transforms into a zombie and a werewolf. This video had some significant dance moves. Billie Jean: (1983) - The video has the honor of being the first music video by a black music artist to be shown on MTV. Interesting fact is that there was never “Billie Jean”, but Jackson once said that the girl in the music video is a composite of people his brothers had been plagued with over the years. Bad (1987) - This video was directed by none other than Martin Scorsese and has Wesley Snipes with MJ. This music video is a story about a smart city youth who wanted to get an education. Black or White (1991) - This video has an impressive star cast including Macaulay Culkin, Brandi Jackson ( Jackson 's niece), Tyra Banks, among others. The video was one of the most controversial music videos ever. At the end of the video various people of different ethnicity meld into each other. Interesting fact is that Slash (of Guns n Roses) played the intro for this music video. Dirty Diana (1988) - This music video of MJs is one of most naughty videos of all times. “Dirty Diana” is a story of a groupie. Some people wanted this video to be banned, but a little naughtiness and that too from a simpleton like Michael certainly never harmed anyone. - Verus Ferreira (Note: Views expressed in this article are that of the writer based on his opinion on the music of Michael Jackson. A meal with a view - Lucky Biryani he magical world of Moghlai cuisine was introduced here when the Mogul empire entered India. This began the saga of the deliciously flavoured saffron coloured rice, cooked with meats - or ‘biryani’ as we know it today. Biryani has its origins from the Persian word ‘biryan’ meaning fried – in this case, pressure fried. If it’s lunch or dinner time (especially on a rainy Sunday) & you are in or around Bandra, Lucky’s – situated on the cross-section of Hill Road & S.V. Road, is where you can try the best biryani available. Lucky’s Biryani is a household name, since it started on 9th Sep 1938. Started by Syed Ali Akbar Huseini, this restaurant is now being looked after by his son Safar Ali while his son Mohsen is being groomed in the family tradition. Zafar who has been in the business for years is a data bank of knowledge as far as biryani’s go. “Biryani is a very specialised dish & requires considerable patience & technical skill to prepare,” he says wisely. “One has to be adept with the basic points in preparation, minute points which make all the difference." The first step is the preparation of birishta i.e. fried onion (light brown in colour). ‘Birishta is then mixed with mutton or chicken along with some dry garam masala, ground wet masala & yoghurt. Mutton needs at least one hour for marination, while chicken requires say 35-40 minutes. Oil (ln which the birishta has been fried) is also added to the marination to quicken the process. The oil used for biryani is re-

fined, as it makes the biryani easily digestable and not very greasy too. In case of a vegetarian biryani, 1 kilo mutton / chicken is replaced by vegetables such as cauliflower, carrot, potatoes, green peas & beans. Sometimes, while making a non-vegetarian biryani, potatoes & tomatoes added can create a distinct flavour. Another important tip to make a note of, according to Zafar, is “when cooking the rice, you initially boil water, to which you add some salt & whole garam masala & finally the rice. The rice has to be cooked slightly raw." The whole garam masala consists of cloves, cardamoms & cinnamons. The dry masala is obtained by grinding together: the cloves, cardamom both of which are added in the marinate to create a wonderful aroma. The whole garam masala added to the rice also brings out a rich & distinct flavour. Yoghurt is an important ingredient, says Zafar. “The curds we use for marination is generally set from buffalo milk as it is high in fat content; this fat headaches are often half headaches. They may occur early in the morning, in the sun, during holidays, and after seeing a noisy film. Often these headaches come for no apparent reason.Treatment consists of taking aspirin or metacin. For more severe attacks, vasograin will be effective. Patients who avoid tension, anxiety or worry, tend to do well. 3. I have been diagnosed as having viral hepatitis. What is the treatment? -Patsy Gomes It mainly consists of rest, till jaundice disappears.Fats should be avoided,if stools are white coloured, which may occur for a period of 2-3 days only. Intravenous glucose is necessary, only if patient is vomiting excessively. Antibiotics are of unproved value and may increase nausea, vomiting. is usefully absorbed by the mutton / chicken, when cooked. The final process of cooking is when the lower most layer is the marinated mixture, over which a bed of slightly raw rice (Basmati is used) is laid, then some oil is poured over the rice. The vessel is covered & sealed using atta (flour). This prevents any escape of the flavours .... it is also known as cooking biryani the dumpukht way. If at any time, steam escapes the vessel, the biryani would be a flop. Another important process is placing ‘burning coals’ over the vessel. Last, but not the least is the ‘type’ of vessels used for cooking biryani. In the good old days of the nawabs, copper utensils were used. Today, however, milk aluminium vessels are also used. The coal chulas are replaced by gas burners. Though at Lucky's the vessels are not placed directly over the heat source. Instead a steel platform with a little ash is placed over which vessel is set up, it is rotated every 15 minutes or so to avoid the

biryani sticking to the bottom. Like we said before, every step, every ingredient is important to capture the right flavour. The ratio of yoghurt, oil, rice and chicken must be maintained correctly, cautions Zafar. The success rate of Lucky's lies in the personalised attention given to the customers by the Huseini family. A tightly knit family unit, none of the sons of grandfather Husseini broke away, they see that the quality and standard of the cuisine offered is maintained all seasons of the year. In fact, at least one family member has his meals at the restaurant just to keep tabs on the quality and taste. Today, Lucky's has been upgraded and has under its wing an assistant cook and his assistants who manage the daily load of visiting customers and orders from families. The constant feature remains the style of preparing the biryani. Albeit time consuming, but not without taking all the stages of preparation into account. Visit once, and chances are good that you will return again with family & friends.

Millwall Football Club
M
illwall Football Club is a relatively unknown English side which plays in the English League - but in Bandra. A group of teenagers who have adopted this name have started making their presence felt in Mumbai Football. The club was incorporated in May 2009 by a group of youngsters, most of whom are ex-students of St. Stanislaus High School, Bandra - and are spearheaded by their mentors Jubel Solomon & David D’Souza. The
main objective of the club is to unify teenagers through sports. This helps to encourage & develop the traits of discipline, respect & motivation in the local youth. Most often, players who were together in school, tend to lose touch after they go to different colleges & this was an excellent way of keeping the youngsters together. Jubel Solomon who coaches St. Stanislaus High Scool, Bandra saw the potential of these boys & knew they were ‘born for greater things’, both on

the football field & to face life off it. Most of the boys have done well in academics & have secured high percentage in their SSC & HSC Board examinations. The recently formed team have won the 3rd division of the Mumbai league 2010-11 & have qualified for the 2nd division next year. They emerged victors amongst 130 teams which took part in the recently concluded league at the St. Xaviers Ground, Parel. They were runner up to Falcon

In the last edition of the BWFA Bandra League they qualified for the quarter-finals of the play offs & were awarded the Fair Play Trophy. These victories have surely given the boys a tremendous boost & hunger to achieve greater heights. - Hugh Fernandes

KNOW YOUR CANDIDATE
An interview with Baba Siddique - MLA them: Take care of your education, as well as your sport activities, because sports will bring out the values of sportsmanship in you. We learn to lose & win. This is what Bandra is all about. I am fortunate & privileged to be a Bandra boy. I’ve seen Bandra grow in leaps and bounds & will continue to help make it a better place.
1. What is your take on the ‘War Against Corruption’ – and its effect on Bandra ? The war against corruption is an issue with everybody. Everybody wants corruption to end, but the parameters have to be decided by the people who are now at the helm of affairs. The Congress Party has called for an All Party meeting, because that is the crux of democracy. Whatever is right for the people should be followed - and Bandra will surely benefit. 2. What (in brief) is your message to the youth of Bandra? Yes, the youth of Bandra are a very dedicated & pro-active lot – especially where sports is concerned. My message to
3. Do you have any plans to improve the safety factor of senior citizens, women & children in & around Bandra ? Our MP Priya Dutt who works with me as a team has got CCTV cameras installed with funds at her disposal, at critical spots around Bandra - all linked to Bandra Police Station. I don’t think one can ‘not be safe in Bandra’, as it is a very hospitable & fun-loving place. Wherever urbanization takes place, security issues need to be tackled on a day-to-day basis – and we are working towards a safer Bandra. 4. Do you feel Bandra will benefit with the presence of a strong & unbiased local media? To be very honest, if our local media is strong & un-biased, Bandra would definitely benefit. Bandra has a history of having local newspapers in the recent past. In the early 80’s it was Alex Pimenta ( & Vincy D’Mello), then Clarence Gomes & more recently after a gap, Bandra Metro. All were very interesting – and we used to wait impatiently to read the latest issues.
After another gap, your paper Bandra Buzz has come up. I wish you goodluck. Yes, any media which is un-biased is good for the nation, state, city & locality. Normally, Bandra is a happening place – and events get an un-biased report. However some times, nothing has happened, but some BIASED media has reported it. This is unfortunate. I wish Bandra Buzz all the best – especially so, as it is truly an un-biased local newspaper. 5. As per your website, you claim to have done a lot for the people of Bandra, Khar & S’Cruz, being their elected representative i.e. MLA. As of today, how confident are you of continuing in office after the upcoming elections ? I am confident that I will come back with flying colours again. By the grace of God, I’ve been working along with my team, on a day-to-day basis. Visit my website: www.babasiddique.com We have been working with activists, ALM groups, etc. who have now become very pro-active. We get the concerned authorities to directly meet people who have grievances - thereby helping to resolve issues in a proper manner. This is interaction at the community level, for the common good of the locality. Baba Siddique was interviewed by Bandra Buzz, in view of the upcoming elections.
The Concepts of Participatory Democracy and People Power are being increasingly actualized throughout the democratic world, making our democracies more authentic & people-centred. These concepts acquired added importance after Anna Hazare’s nation wide agitation against corruption. We of Bandra Buzz, have discovered that our very own Bandra resident, Prof. Dr. Louis D'Silva, has authored an entire book on the subject entitled "Participatory Democracy & People Power: India’s Quest for Her Soul". Not only is the author from Bandra, but even the publishers - namely Better yourself Books, 23rd Road, TPS III, Bandra, Mumbai 400 050. Get your copy from the publishers, as this book is a “must for all activists & every citizen concerned with the health & vitality of the world’s largest democracy”.
