Bandra Buzz Bandra Buzz will continue to encourage, uplift, inform, warn & entertain you, with local insights of what’s happening in Bandra & surrounding suburbs.

Merck D’Silva Editor Office 401 Anica, 28 St. Paul Road, Near Bandra Gymkhana, Bandra (W), Mumbai 400050

Enough is enough! Its time to call a spade a spade – and not just please politicians with words of praise for their so-called-support to the community. The evil forces hovering around our city & suburbs right now, need to be fought with courage & determination. Do we need this drama? Are we paying our taxes to deserve this treatment ? More than ever, now is the time to start creating community connect across all religious & political barriers – if we have to avoid a ‘Cairo’ situation, here.

Bandra Buzz is evolving. You will notice a complete change in content & ad formats in this issue. Streamlining of various sections will give you a new & better ‘look & feel’ - thanks to you, our dear readers. We definitely appreciate your valued opinion & constructive comments. International Women Day this month has spurred us to interview three local women of substance, who are highlighted here for their outstanding spirit of enterprise. We are now covering local sports events, other local events, new upcoming businesses in Bandra - and have added 2 more contests where you can win CD’s & DVD’s from reputed companies.

We invite locals to give us your inputs in topics of their speciality. Any local outstanding person, local issue or event will be highlighted. Please inform us, with pics & a write-up, of senior citizens who are celebrating their birthday – and are in their 80’s, 90’s or crossed 100 years. Also, please share any information that will benefit Bandraites. We will publish such matter, only with the writer’s name. Let’s be alert, if we are to help create community connect.

Kind Regards, Merck N. D’Silva

Letters to the editor Hello Readers, It’s March - and spring starts with International Women’s Day & then Holi - the festival of colour, followed by Jamshed-e-Navroz. As we march ahead, the weather gets warmer & burning local issues have once again come to the forefront. Hello Editor, I've always been a Bandraite. So dear Bandra Buzz team, keep up the good work and update me on my home town. - Conrad Dias Dear Sir, I would like to list out the following grievances which may be taken up by your paper " 1. The chaos created by Learner's Academy/Candies throughout the day i.e. indisciplined parking / honking. The parents need not drive their cars right into the school gate. They

can be told to drop their kids at the start of the road leading to the school. This will help ease the traffic and lessen the Honking Menace. Candies can be requested to post "No Honking" signs at various intervals outside their premises. This will lead to the residents enjoying the peace and quiet they had before the Candies outlet opened on this road. 2. Candies putting up their own personal "No Parking" Boards across their premises, ends up in heavy traffic parking on Convent Road and D'Monte Park Road. 3. The "No Parking" signs put up on the left hand side of the road as you enter D’Monte Park Road from Candies should really have been on the right hand side. This will enable the cars to park in a disciplined manner one behind the other - instead of having parking on the side where the buildings are. 4. There is not a single street light on the road onwards leading to Anthony Garage. That road is used when the traffic is too much on the main Perry Road and it is extremely

dangerous and dark for the very young or very old people. 5. Why can't the main Perry / Turner Road from the Banks leading to Otters' Club have zebra crossing at intervals since it is becoming a very "accident prone" area ??? I hope you will not only publish my letter but take up these very serious issues with the Authorities for a happier, noise free and disciplined Bandra. - Seema Roy The fire is the most horrible tragedy in Bandra. It has affected the SSC and HSC students who are preparing for the on going exams. I appeal to those students who have passed out to contribute their text books, guides, stationery, etc. to help out. Those willing to contribute can e-mail me at pereiraagnelo@indiatimes.com or Mob: 9869778257 - Agnelo Pereira

M. N. Rao coming to Bandra shoots – from textile selection - to design - to dressing in style. The MNR brand targets the upper class and has plans to have a separate factory, exports, their own boutique in prime localities – and start a system of franchisee with the Master Hand brand name. Expanding horizons is their goal. They aim to maintain international standards of client after-salesservice – that has been always appreciated. This is their secret ingredient. It’s no wonder that they continue to have repeat customers, especially satisfied NRI’s, since more than 3 decades. These brothers love doing personally, the ‘master cut’ & ‘design’ combination – that sets them apart from the rest. To make things more convenient for their premium clients, they have decided to come soon to the prime area of Bandra. - Kishore Chainani

The MNR brand was started by the legendary Mr. M. N. Rao in 1965. With humble beginnings in a small shop and now having a bigger shop & showroom in Vileparle (E), they are now coming soon to Bandra. Vinayak & Madhusudan Rao, both

sons of the late Mr. M. N. Rao, have learnt the finer points of tailoring from their father. Their guru is the one and only A. K. Hangal, who continues to inspire them towards perfection in every creation. This awesome combination of having obtained a certified diploma in ‘Italian Cutting’, along with a ‘de-

signer’ background, is what makes the mnr brand unique. Personal attention to elite corporate customers is their daily mantra. A lot of ethnic designer wear is created for Bollywood personalities, who come from all parts of Mumbai. They also take full modeling assignments for catalogue

H-West Mini Marathon kicks off with 1,000 runners

Over 3,000 runners today flocked to the streets of Bandra, Khar and Santacruz from the wee hours of Sunday morning to run for a cause by participating in ‘MUST Run’, the first ever HWest minithon held in the Western suburbs. Well known celebrities like noted scriptwriter and film-maker Amole Gupte, actress Divya Dutta, former actress and singer Salma Agha and actor Raza Murad amongst several coprporate personalities graced the occasion. The event was flagged off by newlywed celebrity couple, actress Neelam Kothari and model and TV personality, Sameer Soni. Music legend, octogenarian and Bandra resident Kersi Lord was a special guest at the event. Runners included around 150 municipal children, as well as participants from sports clubs, individual runners, slum residents and NGO beneficiaries. In addition, the physically challenged segment saw participation from ADAPT and Cheshire Home, Andheri, both in the wheelchair category and on foot. A contingent of over 250 from the Police Training College also participated in the Open and Youth Category. More than 30 participants from the Indian Army comprising troops of the 19th Batallion the Sikh Regiment as well as representatives from the Fire Brigade added their own flavour to the event. Adding to the festive spirit, the event pulsated to the beat of Bhangra drums along the route as also the rhythm of lejhim while children and adults were kept in splits by the antics of clowns, stilt walkers and jugglers. A special pole mallakhamb performance by Uday Deshpande’s Shivaji Park based group had the audience enthralled by the flexibility and acrobatics of the children. Commenting on the initiative, Ms. Anandini Thakoor, Chairperson of the

H-West Federation which organised the minithon along with Wake Up Bandra, said: “I am overwhelmed by the tremendous support that the event has received and I would like to thank everyone for their unwavering support. I am sure that the success of the event will be vital in enabling us to highlight a couple of critical causes– that of ensuring a good education to our youth, something that the M4CR programme is attempting to do so valiantly in our municipal schools, and that of protecting the few empty spaces that are left in this city where we can pause a bit, breathe healthy and allow our children to run about freely and get some exercise! We also honour the work of KRIPA, which has, for the last 25 years, been working among people afflicted with chemical dependency and HIV infection. The organisers, in an attempt to make the event as environmentally friendly as possible, had enlisted the services of the Bandra Bicycle Club headed by Vishal Sharma as well as the Carter Road Cyclists headed by Faisal Thakur to be the pilot riders for the races. Trained wastepickers from the Stree Mukti Sanghatana’s Parisar Vikas programme were also at hand to collect and recycle the dry waste generated during the event. Noted filmmaker Amole Gupte lauded the initiative saying that it was not often that underprivileged children found space in such large events. He stressed on the needs of these children and exhorted the citizens to ensure that the true benefits of government schemes such as the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan and Right To Education reached those whom they were intended for and did not remain merely on paper. For the love of art A large number of us in our 20’s 30’s 40’s 50’s or even 60’s have always dreamt of being able to draw and paint since childhood but something went amiss & we could not somehow pursue what we really loved to do. But YES… even now there is a chance to fulfill that burning desire to create beautiful drawings, to splash about colors on paper or canvas and make wonderful paintings with your own hands…! LOCAL WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE only focus is social work. I’ve joined the H-West Federation and am very inspired by the kind of work that they do. I always had a political will & longing to change the ‘system’. Now, I understand, that more than a political will, we should have an individual will to change the system. If that is in place, everything will follow. We will tend to vote for the right person and understand what type of changes need to be done.

Cynthia Fernandes, Social Worker Cynthia, can you give us a brief profile of yourself ? My name is Cynthia Fernandes – and I live at Station Cross Road. I’ve studied at Carmel Convent. Right now my

Please tell us some of your Bandrarelated activities… Our recent activity was the Minithon – that focused on the youth, senior citizens, physically-challenged & municipal school children. This local run is to highlight important issues – especially targeting Municipal Schools, where huge funds have been allocated for children – but this does NOT get utilized in the right way! These municipal schools should provide milk, biscuits, mid-day meals. We look into all this – the working condicome back to India.Today I am the Director and founder of Image 4 U Consulting, as a certified Image Consultant.

Parul Shukla, Image Consultant Parul, can you give us a brief profile of yourself ? Sure, I hold a BSc degree in Business Administration from Cardiff Business School and an MSc in International Employment Relations and Human Resource Management from the London School of Economics. I have worked in HR, Marketing and Wealth Management in London and Mumbai with companies such as Merrill Lynch, UBS, Standard Chartered, H.D.F.C Bank and Hutchinson Max Telecom. About 21/2 years ago I decided to

What exactly does Image Consultant mean? As you may know, the concept of Image Management is a very new, untapped concept in India. At the moment, people either go for grooming or etiquette or communication classes. Essentially, what I do is a one-stopshop for enhancing one’s image. I combine all elements of image management: etiquette, groming, communication skills, body language, clothing accessories, personal styling…etc. It covers many facets that can enhance your image in your personal & professional life. Was there any defining reason that made you choose this career ? Well, I got fed up of HR & wanted to earn by starting something of my own – and was exploring various options, when I came across this concept of Image Management. Now, I chose this because this allowed me to extend my previous experience in HR to my background of training skills & coaching. Being a people’s person, it helps me to combine my personal interest in fashion, designing & make-up. It seemed to be

tions, the teacher’s attendance, the computer facilities provided… is the child happy about what is being taught? As nobody monitors these schools, these issues are NOT accountable. Do you see any future, if your activities succeed? I definitely see a future, because we are ‘rubbing the right sparks’. Gone are the days when citizens would be sitting around their homes, just waiting for things to be done. Today, we have meetings of groups – hammering the BMC for not looking after the roads, pavements & about illegal constructions that are happening all around. Now, we have the ‘voice’ – and I wish & hope that one fine day we are CAIRO. We need that kind of movement happening here. Does RTI help? RTI surely helps! Today, it’s different – my group has caught hundreds of scams, where every document was in the perfect combination of the two – and so I was able to learn something new as well as utilize my previous skills that I had acquired in 6 yrs with the corporate world. Do you have any solutions for individuals ? OK, I work with individuals on a oneon-one basis. It basically involves working with people over a certain period of time – anything from a few weeks, months or more. It is a very intimate personal & confidential relationship which I share. I meet the individual initially to understand & assess his/her lifestyle requirements – and what they feel that they need to enhance their image. I, as a professional and someone with an objective opinion, can create certain things as per individual needs, towards developing the image they are looking forward to. Do you have any solutions for corporates? Can you help businesses get to that next level of success – and if so, how? Absolutely! We are here to help corporate with tailor-made solutions. I meet with corporates to understand exactly is the nature of their business, the industry they work in, the staff that may potentially partake in my workshops – which can help them in many

place. That is why the BMC is finding it difficult to answer us – whether it is slum rehabilitation or the Maulana Fund issue. I am proud, that we have very active citizens that are heading these various causes. Do you have any message to the youth of Bandra? Yes, don’t be laid-back and get caught up just in your own activities. Come out today, because 65% of the votes come from citizens like you – the youth! We want the youth to be involved with what we do – and believe me, we are doing it for YOU. You need to come out & help us – at least vote for the right person. We will change, because political changes will happen, provided we have individual changes – i.e. the spirit in us to CHANGE. I thank Bandra Buzz for interviewing me.

ways: a) by ensuring that their employees project a professional image, which is in line with their company goals. b) they are seen favourable among competitors. c) management can hire the right staff, with people who are more image conscious. d)they can ensure more confident employees Essentially, it is to give corporates the winning edge. Do you have any upcoming workshops? Yes, my next workshop is going to be here in Bandra itself, on 12th March. The topic is: How To Create A Powerful First Impression. It’s open to people of all age groups. For further details, please log on to my website: www.image4uconsulting.com Any message to people who may want to start something similar? Sure, Image Management is a sunrise industry. I myself did a course from the Image Consulting Business Institute, based right here in Bandra. Those interested can enroll for this course. I can definitely guide them. Parul, thank you for your insights & time… Thank you for having me & it’s great to be associated with Bandra Buzz.

Kamini, tell us in brief, your role in this hotel? I hold the post of Executive Housekeeper, here in RAMADA PLAZA PALM GROVE – heading one department as a leader. I look after the cleanliness, maintenance & up keeping of the hotel. It is a very challenging job as we have graded rooms that need different levels of housekeeping. I am responsible for staff training (old & new) S.O.P. ( i.e. Systems Of Operation), twice a month – and a daily briefing at 4pm.

What do you personally like in your job? I love meeting new people & reaching targets. Could you elaborate on your love of meeting new people – any celebrity or dignitary? Well. Vidya Balan had come here for some shooting. Though I did not go to meet her personally – special care had to be taken for her needs. Recently, there was a function when Akshay Kumar visited this hotel. We had to make sure that everything was proper, so that no complains come in. In the past, when I was working for Mansingh Hotel in Ajmer, Rajasthan I had welcomed the Queen and King of Nepal , the President of Mauritius with his family , the American Ambassador to India etc…. when working

with Sea Princess Mumbai, I had welcomed Mr. Balasaheb Thakarey.

Any message to women, who may be interested in doing something similar? To women who do nothing: “Have trust in yourself, set goals & achieve it. Only then will you see the outside world, which is big & challenging. Nobody can fool you, if you know facts, through experience.” For this field of work, you need to have passed XII Std, to do your diploma in Hotel Management (3 years) – where you are trained – like Rizvi College, Dadar Catering … or others. During these courses you will get hands-on work experience in hotels – and when you pass, get a job in a good hotel.

Bandra kids play it big at ‘The Sound of Music’ Bandraite Maria D’souza shares her experience on meeting the little stars of Bandra who are the main cast as the Von Trapp children in the musical ‘The Sound of Music’ which was staged recently at the NCPA.

fact, it was the parents who had to take the children to rehearsals and back. “Total involvement” adds Ajit Rodrigues, one of cast’ parents. In a population of 13 million people of which a fourth are children, how did these children feel to be the chosen few? “All thanks to the Andrean Zonals which prepared us to face the audience and to have stage presence” said a very confident Simone who is also a very good singer. Padamsee’s production house had called for auditions which their ability to sing, and read fluently were tested.

There are some movies that never let you get tired of watching. One of them is ‘The Sound of Music.’ I know of someone who has watched this movie 11 times over and each time has come back feeling of not having had enough of it. Simone Alvares (Brigitta). Jordan D’Silva (Kurt), Aidan D'Silva (Friedrich), Akeesha Rodrigues / Danielle D'Silva (Marta), Kimberly Van Drine (Gretl), Eden D'Souza (Louisa), make up the main cast of the Von Trapp children, while their Aseema friends – are Hemlata Tivelekar, Darshana Tivelekar, Minakshi Halwai and Kailash who perform in the dances. Raell Padamsee Theatre Productions brought this blockbuster to the stage, providing a platform for local Mumbai talent. What is very touching is the fact that she created space to bring in several NGOs from Mumbai that educate children from the disadvantaged sections of society which includes the audio and visually challenged. Four children from St. Andrew Parish, one from Mt. Carmel Parish, two from St. Theresa Parish, and four children from Aseema (which falls within the precincts of St Andrews) are part of the cast. “It’s a great feeling to be part of such

Eden, Kimberly, Danielle and Aidan were happy to be in the midst of something that brought them immense happiness. They chimed that it brought them “immense pleasure to make new friends with the same passion for music and acting”.

a huge production” feels Jordan who like the others put in a lot of hard work and time to attend rehearsals. Simone who believes that being a part of the cast taught them to be responsible and professional stated. “There to no one to force you. You just do what you have to do because you enjoy doing it.” The kids at Aseema also echoed a similar feeling. Minakshi said “I felt very proud to stand on that big stage and dance”. The kids were the envy of all who met them, for many of their friends had seen the screen version of The Sound of Music. And now taking part in a classic production for the first time,

meant that their own friends would reenact the whole movie in front of them. This put a lot of stress and time on all the kids. But it was something all the kids did with passion. “I’m sure it was hard work and a lot of sacrifices. It was a wonderful experience” said Akeesha “no doubt we also realized much later how difficult it was. Gong for rehearsals right from the month of October, every day after school and reaching home after 9:00p.m. Then waking up for school the next morning was not very easy at all”. Their families supported their kids wholeheartedly and so did the schools that were proud to show off the talented students. In

With 14 glorious shows already staged and still more to come in May, the children are excited and can hardly wait to on stage again. Hemlata Tiwlekar of Aseema, otherwise a reticent girl says, “I will now sign up for all Raell Padamsee’s shows.” Simone summed up the chat with something so true and practical. “When you want something, you go in search of it. Things do not come to you on a platter”. This statement left me with food for thought, for I truly believe that wisdom often comes from the mouths of little children. Reactions to BMC demolition

We have been taken for a jolly ride by political parties. We can stand on our own feet. I see no reason why we run to these political thieves who just pussy foot us for increasing their vote bank. Why can we now take our problems to the streets of Mumbai. Enough is Enough. Lastly where are our shephards, they seem to have forgotton about their sheep. Its time we blast at their doors - Gordon Jacobs

Documents for the Cross was there for 1936, which was shown to the concerned authority, but they were very adamant to demolish the cross. Catholic female members were also treated badly during the demolition. This cross is situated in an innermost by-lane, that is a dead end of a road. It does not obstruct any traffic I felt very sorry to see the situation. I feel its a high time we should come together and act. Merck, I would urge you to please cover this issue with my statement and photographs. I have clicked photos of brick debris after demolition, iron railings shattered of the cross and the cross uprooted and lying on a wall. - Manuel (Bandra)

Byculla cross demolished what happened OUR MP & MLA assured us they were safe. SO MUCH FOR BLIND FAITH IN THEM. Wake Up Bandra. - Dereyk Talker True first abolish corruption and illegal businesses....The government should consider getting income tax properly from all not just from the working individual. These and many more issues not just harass minorities in a so called democracy. - Julian (London) "These crosses were earlier within Catholic properties. With the advent of BMC and creation of roads in Bandra, a lot of areas were claimed by the civic body as setback areas, bringing these crosses out onto the roads. However, these crosses have their own City Survey numbers and are displayed on all the BMC and old maps of Bandra. Even to this day, people pray the rosary here. The crosses hold a special place in the hearts of Bandraiites and they are also a part of history and heritage of Bandra, just like the Gaothans," said Anil Joseph, vicepresident of BCS. Khar activist Aftab Siddique said that no community should get sentimental as the notice is meant for all illegal religious structures on roads. "Activists should not get involved in such matters

as they are illegal encroachments. I had filed an RTI recently to check the illegal religious structures in H(west) ward," said Siddique. Meanwhile, strongly refuting Siddique's stand, Joseph said, "She doesn't understand the sentiments of the Catholics. The court has said that crosses built after 1964 should be demolished and these crosses have been built before 1964." - Aftab Siddique (Khar) & Anil Joseph (Bandra) Before Aftab Siddique looks at Crosses and other religious structures, he should first get all illegal structures such as buildings, shops, slums demolished and cleared in the structures in H(west) ward and in the rest of the city and also clear the roads of all illegal hawkers. Once he has completed this clean up, then he should focus on the Crosses which were built prior to his birth perhaps. - Or does Aftab Siddique want to clear the Crosses to make way for illegal

shops and illegal hawkers? - Or is this a start of a Nazi programme ? - Why pick on Crosses which were built since the beginning of 1900 and some even since 1825? Instead of directing his energies in superficial and wasteful time and money activities, Aftab Siddique should devote his time and money in removing hawkers of the street, demolish illegal structures and extensions, improve the structures of the slums. - Wilbert D'Silva (Bandra) Dear Merck, As discussed I had visited Hathi Baug, Byculla - where the cross was uprooted by the municipal people. After a brief discussion with the locals, they gathered there after my coming when they came to know that I am from Bombay Catholic Sabha and Bandra Buzz. The inputs I got from these people was this cross was demolished by the Municipal people with heavy police bandobast on 3rd March,Thursday.

Mr Chief Minister, Demolish corruption not our crosses Fr. Warner Dsouza The Controversy of Crosses being illegal and as such had to be demolished came up in the year 2003. As Secretary of the Salcette Catholic Cooperative Housing Society Limited, I took out all the City Survey Sheets where these crosses were shown. As long as the cross was shown on a city Survey Sheet it cannot be demolished as it was deemed to be permanent structure. No demolition took place. Why is the issue now suddenly unfairly being raised to the chargin and detrimental to the feelings of the sensitive and loyal Catholic Community? - Vincy D’mello P.S. All the revelant City Survey Sheets have been purchased and are in the possession of the Salsette Catholic CHS Ltd.

Doctor Peter gives us insights about Dsylexia Developmental reading disorder, also called dyslexia, is a reading disability resulting from the inability to process graphic symbols.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Developmental reading disorder (DRD)(dyslexia) is not caused by vision problems, but rather by problems with the brain's ability to recognize and process symbols. Children with DRD(dyslexia) may have trouble rhyming and separating the sounds in spoken words. These abilities appear to be critical in the process of learning to read. A child's initial reading skills are based on word recognition, which involves being able to separate out the sounds in words and match them with letters and groups of letters. More developed reading skills require the linking of words into a coherent sentence. Because DRD children have difficulty connecting the sounds of language to the letters of words, they may have difficulty understanding sentences. Most children with DRD have normal intelligence, and many have above-average intelligence. The disorder is a specific information processing problem that is not connected with the ability to think or to understand complex ideas. DRD(dyslexia) may appear in combination with developmental writing disorder, and developmental arithmetic disorder. All of these involve using symbols to convey information. These conditions may appear alone, or in any combination.

reading may be lifelong, however. Complications - Problems in school, including behavior problems (an indirect result, such as a reaction to teasing by other children) and loss of self-esteem - Problems with reading in adulthood, which may result in occupational problems in certain careers, particularly if the problem was not addressed early. Calling your health care provider(paediatrian) Call your health care provider(paediatrian) if your child appears to be having trouble learning to read. Other causes of learning disability and, in particular, reading disability, must be ruled out before a diagnosis of DRD can be made. Cultural and educational shortfalls, emotional problems, mental retardation, and diseases of the brain (for example AIDS) can all cause learning disabilities. Symptoms - Difficulty determining the meaning (idea content) of a simple sentence - Difficulty learning to recognize written words - Difficulty rhyming May occur in combination with writing, or arithmetic learning problems. Signs and tests The first step is to perform a complete medical (both physical and neurologic), developmental, social, school performance, and family history. These

may be followed by psychoeducational testing, and psychological assessment. Other causes of learning disabilities, will need to be ruled out before the diagnosis of DRD can be confirmed. Treatment Special education services may include specialist help, individualized tutoring, or special day classes. Every individual has different requirements and an Individual Education Plan should be created for each child. Positive reinforcement is important as many students with learning disabilities have poor self-esteem. Psychological counseling may be helpful. Expectations (prognosis) Extra help (remedial instruction) can lead to marked improvement in reading and understanding. Difficulties with

Prevention - Learning disorders tend to run in families. DRD is one kind of learning disorder. Affected families should make every effort to recognize existing problems early. - For families without a previous history of learning disabilities, an intervention can begin as early as preschool, or kindergarten if teachers detect early signs. Early intervention will provide the best possible outcome. - If, a child, has dyslexia, then most examination boards, give them special considerations, including exemptions, for the exams. The festival of colours…and water! It’s that time of the year again when the whole of India unwinds and chills out to participate in the Holi festival. Colourful faces, wet clothes and ecstatic shrieks all herald in this joyous spring festival. Holi is yet another celebration of the triumph of good over evil – It is the commemoration of the burning of the demoness Holika as she tried to kill Prahlada, the privileged devotee of Lord Vishnu, who miraculously survived. Huge bonfires are lit across India to celebrate this glorious event. Holi has always been celebrated with gaiety and vigour in Mumbai. The cosmopolitan nature of this city ensures that people of all castes and creeds become wet and colourful during this festive occasion. Gangs of mischievous kids hurl water balloons at each other or at unsuspecting passers-by who first shriek, then abuse and finally burst into laughter - well, not always! And then there are the groups of adults who are comparatively restrained in their celebrations. They smear each others faces with colour or toss the powder gleefully into the air such that it stains their clothes which are often white in colour – that is, before they get stained. Unfortunately, the colours they use nowadays are synthetic and not only difficult to remove but extremely unhealthy as well. Traditionally, only natural colours were used and they

were supposed to have medicinal value as the ingredients included neem, kumkum and haldi. Some of the nostalgic memories of my childhood include rushing to the bedroom window immediately after breakfast during Holi to watch Kumar, my classmate, lift a huge bucket of balloons and position himself for the daylong assault. Kumar ‘s sixth floor flat was strategically located to provide a perfect view of the small lane heading towards the building. So, at regular intervals, I could spot the missiles darting out from the window and falling on the unfortunate victims below. The angry yells confirmed the accuracy of the strike. Soon I would try to emulate my idol by filling at least a dozen water balloons. Unfortunately, the nearest road was quite far from my third floor balcony and so I let the balloons drop down harmlessly on to the compound below. In the evening some of my balloontossing friends would hurl the waterladen objects at passers-by to good effect. Yes, most Indians would have fond memories of some amazing moments they experienced during Holi. This wonderful festival certainly adds colour to our lives! - Vivek Pereira

Pancakes Ingredients - 250 g plain flour - 1 egg - 250 ml coconut milk - 100 ml water - 1 teaspoon colouring – if needed - Salt to taste

Method 1. Mix the grated coconut, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Fry the mixture in a dry pan over medium/low heat, then add the water. Constantly stir for approximately 5 minutes or until the mixture is dry. But don't get burn! Set aside and remove the cinnamon sticks. 2. To make pancake: combine the flour, egg, colouring, coconut milk, salt with the rest of water. Whisk them well into a smooth batter, just like you make pancake mixture. When it's ready, prepare non-stick frying pan (use 8-inch frying pan if you have) and pour 3 tablespoon of the batter into the pan. Make sure the pan is equally covered with the batter so it becomes a thin layer pancake. Fry for one minute, turn the pancake over and fry for another minute. 3. Place 2 teaspoons of coconut filling near the edge of the pancake. Fold over once - then tuck in the left and right sides and fold over once more. Then roll. Bandra Buzz Cast: Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway. Directed By: George Cukor Reliving a 1964 classic in the days of 2010 can be an enthralling experience. One of the breathtaking musical extravaganzas of all time that garnered 8 Academy awards statuettes, including Best Picture is sure to bring back memories of the early days of the silver screen. The plot is pretty simple and is an adaptation from ’’Pygmalion’ (1912) by George Bernard Shaw and the stage musical many years later. Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering (Wilfred Hyde-White), that he could take the local Cockney flower girl who has no society standing and turn her into one of societies finest in six months. The demure, unrefined, Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) is put to the rigors day and night. Higgins turns Eliza into royalty, with an aristocratic accent. The fun lies not so much in the makeover, but rather how Henry goes about changing Eliza to what he wants. Despite

the ievitableconfrontations, Eliza downsizing Henry to his mother, and leaving him to fall in love with someone else, Higgins’ heart goes out to her. Having grown accustomed to her face, he can’t do without her. The acting is impeccable. The music timeless. You have classics like ‘I could have danced all night’, ’The rain in Spain’, ’The street where you live’, ‘With a little bit of luck’ and ‘Get me to the Church on time’ the list goes on and on. Harrison singing voice comes closer to speaking on pitch than actual singing on some songs. The movie is worth seeing just for the songs alone. The movie is long at 166 minutes, but mind you, with such a plot and great music, time flies. Add to that the Special Features of an hour that showcases snippets from the LA Premiere, the gala dinner with interviews, Harrison’s speech, Academy Awards highlights and more, this is simply ‘loverly’. - Verus Ferreira

With a totally new line up comprising of founder and lead guitarist Mick Jones, and five new faces, Jeff Pilson, Tom Gimbel, Michael Bluestein, Jason Sutter and vocalist Kelly Hansen, the band tried its best to recreate the hits that made them famous. Hansen’s showmanship was the highlight. His mingling into the

crowd, to inviting the audience to the front of the stage rocking with him, he truly was the man of the moment. The 90 minute set concluded with the soul stirring ballad ‘I want to know what love is’ with almost everyone in the audience joining in. Die hard fans just wouldn't budge the auditorium after the concert. A few fans waited at the exits to get an autograph of the band members.
