HITTING ALL THE RIGHT NOTES
SHANNON DONALD Bandra is known to produce some of the biggest singers and musicians in the music industry over the years; but in recent time singer and performer Shannon Donald has been hitting all the right notes. Shannon has already achieved so much, at a very young age. Performing with almost everyone in the music industry in India, Shannon plans to take her career in music to another level in the years to come.
She first started singing at the age of 4 - and later began training with her grandmother and music teacher Renee Pereira in Western Classical. Living in Bandra, a place which gives so much exposure to young talent, Shannon took part in a lot of competitions. Growing up included the Bandra Zonals, which is a platform for many singers and musicians, to kickstart their careers in music. She owes a lot of
her success to Celeste Cordo, her music teacher, for all the vocal training and inputs she received when she was in her teens. By then, music was clearly an important part of her life - and so she began singing professionally at the age of 16. Since then, she has never looked back. Featuring on MTV Coke Studio and MTV Unplugged, she has worked with some of the biggest artist in the music industry today - and has toured with big names like Salim Sulaiman, Mohit Chauhan, A.R. Rahman, Farhan Akhtar and currently Sunidhi Chauhan. Shannon has also had memorable duet performances with actor & singer Ayushman Khurana and Bollywood playback Singer Mohit Chauhan. When asked about her other interest besides music, Shannon also has studied fashion merchandising - and says,” If not music, I would have definitely taken up fashion merchandising as a career”. Shannon’s musical career has been help shaped and influenced by many personalities from the music industry, who she is grateful to - which includes music directors Ranjit Barot & Salim Merchant. Always eager to learn, Shannon says the best advice ever given to her is to keep pushing herself over the limit and keep surprising herself. This hardworking dedicated singer has a huge agenda in front of her, as she plans to push herself this year into becoming a solo artist and also work for more Bollywood songs; as well as form her own act and perform alongside with her musically talented friends who have provided her with so much support over the past few years. When asked about what advice she would give young upcoming talent, Shannon says, “There are no rules in music, but it’s important for a solo artist to add their personal touch to song writing- or even when covering their favourite artist”. So, if you haven’t heard Shannon perform as yet, head over to one of her gigs and you will find out why she is ‘Bandra’s Next Big Thing...’ Dujon Fernandes Pic Courtesy: MTV

LOCAL HERO
Half Cop, but a 'Complete' Woman
ANITA LOBO >> Anyone who lives in Bandra - and has driven a few times past ' Cafe Mocha Mojo' on Hill Road, knows about her. Redirecting and monitoring traffic arms pointing in various directions, frantic whistling... and from half a block away you know that it is 'Anita Lobo', Bandra's very own traffic warden on duty today. Standing in the scorching sun, free of charge, sweating it out, her greatest satisfaction comes from knowing she is doing something for the community. An ex-Carmelite, she was in a good mood when we met her at her bakery. She told us that the Apostolic Carmel High School was felicitating her the following day for Women’s Day - for her contribution to society. ''Women should go ahead and do something, stop taking a back seat, and if something is stop-
ping them, take help, talk to a family member or a social group, earn money, stop being a victim'', was her message to women. Owning a family business along with her sisters, the 'Vienna bakery' for decades now, her transformation from a smiling shop keeper to a ‘no nonsense warden’ in a formal uniform, is nothing short of amazing - and she adds, ''Through the years, the traffic has got worse - and so have the drivers, especially auto wallas and bikers. But most people are nice.'' Getting a friendly wave from regular travellers which pass by at a specific time everyday, or even a smile of acknowledgement, from those who appreciate her - makes her day. She does this routine almost everyday for four hours, splitting it into a morning and
an evening shift, with a few water breaks in between. Of course, there are people who argue with her - and she knows how to deal with them in her own stern way. Her infamous incident with a politician last week, which could have well been a minor setback for her, has not slowed down this enthusiastic lass and she tells us, ''They have clout and therefore use it. But I try to be fair to everyone'' But, in general she feels being a woman has an advantage with vehicle owners and drivers - as they respect her more. Her sister Aureen who was standing nearby adds, ''I tell her that all this is not worth the effort she puts in. Where women are concerned, many things are changing now”. In her own words, Anita shared
something with us, ''I am proud to be a woman and firmly believe that women should be treated with respect and equality. I have donned many caps in life right from daughter to business woman to traffic warden, Watching the traffic congestion outside my shop and disgusted that everyone had something to say - but did nothing about it, I decided to do my bit, to make a difference. On 'Women’s Day', I urge every woman to stand up, take a step forward and make a positive impact to their surroundings. Let's stop complaining and start working towards a better tomorrow. Let our actions speak louder than words.'' Kainaz Jussawalla Pic Courtesy: Nelvin John Patil

WOMEN vs DEMON We are celebrating Women’s Day on March 8th - but what exactly are we celebrating? Liberation, freedom, independence, enlightenment, we can use every ''feel good'' word in the world, but neither will it change the facts we found - or the stats that support them. Here are some eye opening revelations.... Graham Peebles in the Counterpunch, Usa's political newsletter, caught my eye this March 8th, with his heart wrenching write up. ''In the ancient land of India, where female deities are deeply revered; Kali and Lakshmi, Sarasvati and Parvati, are held high upon the altar of Hinduism. Each day thousands of Hindu’s ritually bathe in the Holy waters of the Ganges, cleansed within and without by the Goddess Ganga, women and girls; in the forests, cities, villages and towns, on buses and trains, in the street, office, at school and in the home are being violated, abused, raped and trafficked into prostitution and domestic slavery. Such is life for many, far too many women in the hollow titled ‘largest democracy in the world’; ‘New India’ that sits at the head table rubbing nuclear shoulders beyond treaties of control, whilst denigrating and abusing women throughout the land. Nationally, 8% of married women have been subject to sexual violence, such as forced sex, 31% of married women have been physically abused in a way defined as ‘less severe’, such as slapping or punching, while 10% have suffered ‘severe domestic violence’, such as burning or attack with a weapon. Even the womb offers no sanctuary to the daughter of Kali, with 12 million
female foetuses being aborted in the last 30 years. The list of abuse suffered is familiar and appalling; trafficking, prostitution, ‘arranged’ and child marriages – illegal under federal and international law, but widespread, with almost half of girls forced to marry by 18 and 20% by 15 years old; young girls sold as chattels, brides burned alive in dowry disputes, teenagers exploited as domestic workers, which equates to little more than modern day slavery. Completing the catalogue is widespread domestic violence, molestation in public (of Indians and visitors) verbal intimidation and rape, which the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) says is ‘the fastest growing crime in India’, and takes place every day, in all manner of situations - to all sections of society, young or old. Those sitting comfortably in authority, dismiss sexual assault and rape incidents, 90% of which are perpetrated by someone known to the woman - and cite the victim’s dress and demeanour as provocation for the assault.'' A survey by Trust Law earlier this year of the G20 countries found, unsurprisingly that India, is the worst country to live in of the glorious top 20; if you happen to be incarnated in a female form, beating Saudi Arabia to the relegation spot. Well India continues to stay on the dark side of the World Map. As of today, Worldwide .... • 1 in 3 women have been beaten or sexually abused in her lifetime. Usually the abuser is a member of her own family, or someone known to her. • Boys who witness their fathers' violence are 10 times more likely to engage in spouse abuse in later adulthood.
• In some parts of the world, a girl is more likely to be raped than to learn how to read. • Every year, 60 million girls are sexually assaulted at, or on their way to, school. • Women and girls are 80% (6,40,000) of the estimated 8,00,000 people trafficked across national borders annually with the majority (5,05,600) trafficked for sexual exploitation. • At least 60 million girls are 'missing' from various populations - mostly in Asia - as a result of infanticide, neglect or sex-selected abortions. • Between 100 and 140 million women and girls alive today, have been subjected to Female Genital Mutilation. In six African countries over 80% of women have been subject to this practice. • Over 60 million girls worldwide are child brides: 31.3 million in South Asia, 14.1 million in Sub-Sahara Africa. Violence and abuse characterise married life for many of these girls. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon states, "There is one universal truth, applicable to all countries, cultures and communities: violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable, never tolerable." Agreeing with the UN Secretary General - my friends at Bandra Buzz and me, know that it's not a time to relax and cheer to a great day, but a time to wake up and wash the dirt off with our own hands. We all are living in a society filled with such unidentified parasites - and are equally responsible for breeding them, protecting them and encouraging them. Non action, indifference and taking a back seat are just some of the many ways we do that. Kainaz

The Bandra Diaries Starting this month, Bharat Gupta will share a personal take on Bandra in his column. When I came to Mumbai nearly three years back, I’d visit various places to soak in everything that the city has to offer. But each time I’d visit Bandra, there was something magnetic that would keep pulling me back. I knew this is where I’d want to live and sooner or later it happened. There is an extraordinary co existence of various people, cultures and communities. It’s a city within the city. Bandra bustles with activity through the day and continues do to so at night. There is never a dull moment where one would feel alone. And just when I’d feel I’ve seen enough, this place never ceases to surprise. On the ‘oh so touristy’ Carter Road, Bandra held the ‘Car-Free Day’, which was yet another testimony to what this Queen of Suburbs is all about. In fact, I barely even noticed that there were no cars on the stretch, but it seemed more like a community affair. Kids cycling, women shopping and families eating; it was a transformation from a single community celebrating their own festival to everyone celebrating the freedom of existence. But is it something about this place that makes it happen? It was a post work more of an inquisitive visit to this event. With a group on eight friends, neither of who are residents of Bandra; we walked among happy people. I think that was enough to make us happy. How often do you see a stretch of road where not one is fighting or whining? And I think, is it the day, occasion or a vibe that this place creates. What is it that made my friends travel all the way just to see a road without cars. So was this ‘Car-Free Day’ synonymous to the ‘Care-Free Existence’ of the people in Bandra. The contentment that people have in their lives was in full view at the event - and transcended to the visitors from other areas, that came to revel in the glory. Stopping cars from running on one stretch of road for just one day might not bring a physical change, but it did bring about an emotional one. Behind closed windows of the cars zooming through, you will not see the smiles on people’s faces and their animated conversations; but a walk across the road will help your joy become someone else’s. And this is exactly what Bandra has done for me - and for everyone who lives here or visits this place. It inconspicuously takes the physical existence to an emotional one, giving you time and space to introspect. And - if just a place can do so much for you, what more could you want. Bharat Gupta
Migration of flamingos off as a few dots of pink across the muddy landscape in October reaches its crescendo by March. A time lagged picture of the mudflats would be akin to an artist starting out with a few dots of sample colours before mixing up the canvas with brilliant shades. The ideal time to catch them in action is a couple of hours prior to the high tide. As the water starts to move inland, the birds follow suit and get closer to the shore. Mornings provide better solitude as fewer people turn up, but the evening light is recommended for photography. Do pack some sunscreen, cap, sunglasses and your best behaviour as the Flamingos don't take kindly to screams and loud ring tones. The ideal way to travel to Sewri from Bandra is to catch a Harbour Line train, get off on the east side and make your way to the mudflats at land's end. Alternatively, one could drive or catch a cab. It's advisable to use the Wadala over bridge to get to the east side rather than wait for up to 30 minutes at the railway crossing.
I still remember the first time I arranged a trip to Sewri for some overseas travellers. As we crossed over the railway tracks and then moved past abandoned trucks, nondescript lanes and piles of rubble, the expression on their faces said it all. "Now comes the part where he's going to steal our money and abandon us!". Well, fortunately the dread was short lived as we'd soon come across a vast expanse bathed in different hues of pink. The Flamingos were there and For any more information, do write to now, so were we. us at foxtrails@hotmail.com or visit us These gentle giants make their way on twww.facebook.com/foxtrails to Mumbai from their breeding grounds in Kutch, Gujarat. Holi Fun! If there is one thing all children love, it’s playing with water. Yes, new born babies do scream during their bath and ‘malish’. And you new mums reading, before you know it, that phase is over and the next starts, where they just don’t want to come out of the bath, even when the water runs cold. I still remember both my boys enjoying their “bucket baths” where they basically sat in a bucket filled with water and kicked about - and screamed with anger, when bath time was over. What’s a bucket for mummy,is a bathtub for baby. Luckily for us, there is a legitimate reason for our kids to play with water soon. Holi, this year, falls on Wednesday, 27thMarch. The festival celebrates the start of spring. It’s the time to celebrate spring’s wonderfully bright colours, and the warmer weather. Once you know this, it all makes sense, really. The brightly coloured powder, the water fun… It’s not just children, teens and adults acting wild. Well, it is, but it’s all part of the symbolism of Holi, part of why we celebrate Holi. The bright colours represent energy, life and joy. The water represents the dawn of warmer weather. This article gives you fun ideas for easy, safe, Holi playing for you and your child, this year: BEFORE HOLI: You can of course, buy plastic guns and ‘pichkaris’ at any toy store; but if you are looking for a fun DIY activity at home, you and your child can make your own recyclable pichkari. What you need: A plastic bottle (Aquafina, Bisleri, Coke, or any other plastic bottle that you would normally throw out), a compass from a geometry box (or any other sharp instrument that you can use for piercing, some Acrylic paints and stickers.
stickers. Keep it to dry. Fill the bottle with water and press it till it squirts through the hole in the cap. • The best option is to use natural home made colour powders. A little tedious and a little expensive, but worth the effort. Some examples of this are – mixing equal quantities of mehendi with flour for green colour, equal quantities of turmeric or haldi with flour for yellow colour, equal quantities of red sandal wood powder with flour for red colour, and dry and grind Jacaranda flowers for blue colour. Involve your child in the powder making process, it can be lots of fun. • If natural home made colour powders is not a feasible option for you, a quick and inexpensive fix is a cap full of any food colouring in a bucket of water. Viola food colouring bottles cost just Rs18 each and are available at most grocer stores. ON THE DAY, ON HOLI: • Dress your child in the oldest, most worn out clothes in the cupboard. You are never going to be able to use those clothes again. • Make sure your child’s face, arms, exposed skin is well creamed. You can even use Parachute coconut hair oil on the skin. This makes it easy to wash off all colour and less likely for colour marks to remain on the skin. Also, the need to scrub your little one hard, after all that colourplaying is much less. • Oil your child’s hair too. This way, colour won’t stick on the hair and it will be possible to wash it all off easily, after play.
Remember to let go, have fun and click lots of pictures. We’d love to see them, so send in two of the best pictures of your child playing Holi, to news.bandrabuzz@gmail.com, with “Holi fun” as the subject line. We met Mathew, to get an insight about the founder - and learn how he has grown the company from humble beginnings to international standards, through sheer grit & hard-work - using his tremendous talents to the maximum. We saw him as a very humble, softspoken & down-to-earth business person, yet alert to the questions we asked him. His frank & upbeat attitude was very infectious. Mathew, what is your vision and mission statements? FAC is committed to becoming a leader in Bronze Marine Valves & High-Pressure Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves, serving

Madam, what is your role in the company? I have been with the business group for the past 25 years. Basically, I am from the Science background - with a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, graduating from Bombay University. Initially, I used to head the department; looking after the tedious process of the Chemical Analysis of the various exotic alloys cast by the company. Gradually, I took over the overall administration of the company, keeping a firm grip on the accounts & general functioning of the company office personnel.
Rohan, what is your role in the organization? I have been with group for the past 15 years. I have done my Production Engineering from Fr. Agnel's Engineering College. I started as a marketing man, and have contributed to the growth of the company by bagging large orders from Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) - Offshore Projects, Hyundai, BHEL, Assam Gas, Kirloskar, Larsen & Toubro Ltd. etc. I was very successful in putting our company name on the prestigious ONGC approved vendor list of Offshore Projects for the supply of valves.
Rahul, what is your role in the organization? I have been with the group for the past 10 years. I am a double graduate, holding a degree in Electronic Engineering from TEC & MBA - Finance from SNHU, USA. From my early days with the company, I had an ambition to push the company's products on the global market. My major role was starting the export activities of the company - from small export orders to large ones. Currently, the group is exporting to all parts of the globe - like the USA, Europe, Africa, Middle East, CIS, South East Asia etc. Our exports contribute to about 50% of the company's turnover.

plied to ONGC, Oil India Ltd, Indian Oil, Assam Gas, Assam Power, BHEL, Voltas, Larsen & Toubro, Kirloskar Brothers, Dressar Rand, Hal Offshore & Afcons Ltd.

We employ, train, develop and retain qualified & dedicated staff. We design and manufacture products of the highest quality and reliability; while maintaining standards of operational safety. Honestly, the motto is not for others. It is for my team at YouMe&We and all the Media Relation professionals out there! We are known to be the loudspeakers of our clients - and as we boldly praise them, people (especially journalists) end up being nagged by us constantly. So, we might not always get a good response; when we call or follow-up on our client pitches. But it’s part of the job. Everyday is a new day - and I think it needs a lot of courage to do this everyday! Not everyone can trump it. So to my very able team I say, “Jab PR kiyatohdarnakya!” What is your strongest competition in the market - and what is your way of dealing with stiff competition? The market is still very big. Any individual consultant to a growing company is competition for us. My strategy is to stick to what we do best. Where do you see YouMe&We five years from now? Everywhere We can be! We want to explore many more related verticals - and tap into more accounts. We are a young team - and with the unwavering support of our well-wishers, nothing is impossible! 8655510001 / 9820117121 10/A, New Chapra Bldg., Below Vichare Courier, Next to Price Waterhouse Cooper Bldg, Station Road, Bandra (W), Mumbai - 50. LETTERS TO THE EDITORS PROPERTY TAX & POLITICIANS Have you noticed that no politician has opposed the unreasonable hike in property tax. In fact, they have infiltrated into citizen &social groups to ‘show people how to pay their taxes’. It’s simple to know why they are acting in this manner. Firstly, they are not affected by this tax hike. Secondly, as more tax is collected, the scope for scams is multiplied, with more funds at their disposal. They can have their weekend homes around Mumbai, with the latest smart phones & best SUVs. It does not matter, if these taxes are used to subsidize the civic facilities given to illegal slums – as these pockets are their vote banks – to return to power. It is disgusting to see people who do not understand this – and promptly pay their taxes, unconcerned of the consequences 6 – 8 years from now. Do they realize that 6 – 8 years from now, their tax will go up 15 – 20 TIMES !!! Then, those who cannot pay will have to move northwards – Malad, Borivili… or even Vasai, Virar& beyond. Please do not support this CORRUPT TAX RULING – and save yourself & future generations from the ‘real terrorist’ of India. Calvary hill, today stretch out just opposite Our Lady of Bethlehem church, Dongri. The church also recently celebrated 400 years on January 20th and a solemn celebration was presided over by Archbishop Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Bishop Bosco Penha and Father Victor Dalmet amongst others. Just like one would attend the 14 Stations of the Cross at Calvary, the neighboring villages in and around Uttan also ascend unto the hill and recite the 14 stations today. Most of the collection the Chapel received was passed onto St. Andrew Church, Bandra while very little was left for the maintenance of the Chapel. This gradually over time left the Chapel with inadequate funds and its upkeep dwindled. In the late 1960’s the wooden railings from the Chapel, along with the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows and a number of other Church essentials, were passed onto St. Anne’s Church, Pali Hill. The engraved tombstones which detailed the names of family members buried at the Chapel are nowhere to be seen. Thankfully, a hand written note probably by my great grandfather details the names of his kin who were buried at the Chapel over the years. Today the Chapel has zero footfalls, the only visitors and regular residents are security personnel, who spend their days and night on the holy turf, not knowing its significance and its celebrated past. The door to the Chapel is locked, the walls cracked and the roof caves in at one end, spiders and creepers have made it their permanent home. Abandoned for years now and on its last legs, take a walk down Calvario Hill Road,Bandra and take a long stare at the Chapel that once was - before it all crumbles and is grabbed by Bandra’s many land sharks.
tions to be pushed out of Bandra, making way for the super rich (and corrupt) – because we will not act now? More importantly, have we really understood how the BMC is calculating our assessment amounts – with all its arbitrary implications? Meanwhile, the bollywoodbuilders-politician nexus is busy planning how to buy out ‘lost’ areas, with fear tactics – and then develop facilities & infrastructure, to create ‘hyped up’ prime properties - and reap incredible margins. Our coastal properties are most vulnerable to this ‘flush out phase’ – as the local people in these areas are too simple to imagine the devious plans to displace them. BandraBuzz needs your feedback

Chidambaram has been hailed as a growth oriented budget,in the light of the challenging economic backdrop. The Indian economy has been in the slowdown mode - and what the budget aims at is reversing this trend. The budget reflects a realistic perception of the current macroeconomic conditions- and it addresses important areas of concern. The finance minister has commendably managed to ease concerns of an unrestrained fiscal deficit. Bringing down the fiscal deficit from 5.7% in 2011-12 to 5.2% in 2012-13 despite the economic slowdown, clearly indicates that discipline has been maintained. The provisions for overall subsidies are 10% lower than the revised estimates for the current fiscal, which will lead to creation of an environment for moderation in interest rates, as well as create space to focus on revival of growth in the economy - which in turn would lead to boosting of confidence and thus encourage foreign investment and support the balance of payments and currency. A series of measures have been announced in the budget for the infrastructure and manufacturing sectors that are positives. There is an incentive through a 15% deduction as investment
allowance for investments above Rs 100 crore which will spur investment. The emphasis is on growth. The Indian economy is in a slow down mode and the figures released for the third quarter of fiscal 2013 reveals that the economy has grown a mere 4.5% against estimates of 5%. The manufacturing, mining and agriculture sectors have disappointed. However the finance Minister appears hopeful of ending the fiscal 2013 with a GDP growth of around 5.5%., and has targeted a GDP growth of 6.1-6.7% for 2013-14 The finance Minister also appears keen to address the issues of the Direct Tax Code (DTC) and Goods and Services Tax (GST). In regard to GST the finance Minister has made his commitment clear by making a provision of Rs 9000 crore toward GST and is hopeful that most of the states would fall in line. As and when implemented this measure will add to growth and income. Also to promote inclusive growth the finance Minister has initiated several schemes towards rural spend and mass housing. The budget has also initiated some market friendly measures like extending the Rajiv Gandhi Equity savings Scheme (RGESS) for a period of three years on a cumulative basis. Also the eligibility income criterion has been lib-
eralized to Rs 12lakhs from the present Rs 10 lakhs Further the securities transaction tax (STT) has been reduced from 0.17% to 0.01%. Through the disinvestment programme the budget seeks to garner an amount of Rs 40,000 crore and an additional amount of Rs 14,000 croresthrough SUTI and residual stakes in non-government companies like BALCO and Hindustan Zinc. In a nutshell the budget contains several measures which over the longer run could lead to the revival of the economy. However, despite the positive features of the budget, the stock market reacted negatively with the indices falling over 1.5%. The Sensex tanked 291 points while the Nifty shed 103 points on the day of the budget., A proposal in the Union budget that could result in inflows through the Mauritius coming under scrutiny spooked foreign institutional investors (FIIs) .The budget stated that if an FII or a non resident desires of availing of tax treaty benefits, then a tax residency certificate alone would not be sufficient. Earlier for FIIs situated in Mauritius, the tax residency certificate would suffice to avail of treaty benefits. This proposal negated the positive proposals of the Union Budget. The other factors that also contributed to
the disappointment was that the budget fell short of expectations, the surcharge on incomes beyond a threshold limit, the excise hike on certain sectors. The expiry on the futures and options marketalso dampened the sentiment. The carnage being witnessed in the markets over the last week or so especially in the small and mid cap segment has made some of these companies look very attractive and at current and further declines could generate excellent returns for those investors with a time frame of over a year. The large caps have also been beaten down on the day of the budget which make these stocks look all the more attractive both for short term as well as long term investment. With a dismal performance of GDP at 4.5% for Q3 and taming of inflation, there are hopes that the Reserve Bank of India may cut interest rates at its meeting in the month of March. This move could be a major trigger for the markets to reverse its downward trend. With a growth oriented budget, a possible cut in interest rates, and if aided by a good monsoon, the markets could be in for a major move on the upside and investments at current rates and further declines couldgenerate huge returns for investors. Waka Waka with Sir Saby watch the dads come to pick up their children from hockey and football and go share a joke with their “Sir.” He’s very old school is so many ways – a child might get a “phadka,” or be made to run laps around the grounds for not listening, so you can imagine my surprise when I called to ask him for an interview, and heard Waka Waka as his caller tune. And I think THAT sums up Saby beautifully, old school with a little bit of Waka Waka. (Waka Waka, the official song for the 2010 FIFA world cup, means, “Do it”) He’s not much of a talker - and is more interested in doing and getting the children to DO things. However, I managed to pull some answers out of him, just for our readers of Bandra Buzz.
If you are Bandra mum, you’ve definitely heard of him. He’s the one to go to, when you need your child to burn off all that extra energy, in a healthy way. Sebastian Noronha, or “Sir” Saby, as he’s fondly called, has coached children, fromperhaps every street there is in Bandra. He looks at least ten years younger than his actual age, and rightly so, given that he exercises with young boys and girls for so many hours each day. I guess in Saby’s case, you are only as fit as the company you keep. He’s a familiar face on St Andrew’s and St Stanislaus’ grounds. He is there coaching children, throughout the year, rain or shine. You might not be able to count on the sun rising each morning, or your doodhwala bringing you your milk for your chai -but you can count on Saby being on the grounds, in time for hockey or football every morning and evening. He’s tough on the children, but very fair. Everyone gets treated the same, whether they are a budding soccer super star or just there to kick the stones and stare at the marvel of green grass. And the children love him for that. He’s been coaching hundreds of children for twenty years or so (he’s lost track) and actually has coached a lot of the dads of the current lot of children, when they were in school. It’s lovely to

I know you coach the youngest children yourself. Why is this? These young children (3 to 5 years) are the naughtiest and quite often want to play with the mud and not the ball. They need more patience and need a teacher who can help them love the game and make them come back for more practice. That’s why I coach them myself. Older children normally know about the game and the rules and need to learn techniques and build stamina. 5. Which schools and colleges have you coached? Elvis Presley re-incarnated from Bandra!
“Who is that? Elvis Presley? No! That’s Nigel Kingsley-Durham! But he looks like Elvis, Yeah!He not only looks like him but sounds like him too!” (for those who missed his fascinating surprise performance at the Bandra Gymkhana
on Valentine's Day). Nigel Kingsley, adopted by the missionaries in Bandra, Mrs. F. C. Durham of St. Martin's Road - found his true calling when he was placed 2nd in a singing competition at The Andrean Fair of 1972. Finding his roots in Hawaii, the land of song and dance, he left India at 21, to pursue his dream as a singer with the added advantage of looking and sounding like Elvis Presley - the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. He shifted to Switzerland - and has been staying there ever since. Now, you could almost say his name is synonymous with the country itself. He has travelledand performed in 43 countries since then- and will be performing in New Zealand soon - the 44th country of the world! Being raised by missionaries, gospel music was always a part of him - and so he decided to take it forward in gratitude,by singing praises to the Lord, all the across the world and spreading the Word. He re-accounts some tough situations incountries, where spreading the Word and Good Newsis forbidden - and how through his singing, he has moved
people. He considers music his gift, through which he can givepeople his message - and also at the same time entertain them with gospel songs by Elvis Presley. Rightly so, he was ordained a Pastor / Evangelist last year in Switzerland itself. Performing in Las Vegas for six years during the 90’s, and being inducted into their Hall of Fame of '95 are some of his bigger achievements. The different aspect of his concerts among all the other Elvis ‘look and sound alike in the world’ are his signatures: where he throws a ‘teddy bear’ going by the famous Elvis song, into the crowd - and that one lucky person gets to take it home as a souvenir from the concert. A large number of roses to all his female fans in his concert and also wearing the blue and red scarves for one of Elvis Presley’s songs - and a personal favorite of mine ‘Can’t help falling in love’ makes all his shows as unique as they could be among all the other Elvis look alike concerts - and this, over five and a half thousand performances since! Nigel Kingsley is also the only person from India - and more specifically
Bandra, to be recognized on the world stage as an Elvis Presley ‘sound and look alike’. He is also a member of the Elvis Presley Impersonators’ International Association (EPIIA) and recognized worldwide. Asking him whether he would like to perform in India or Mumbai n particular on the big stage, since this is where he first performed, he delightfully says he definitely would and why not! Probably a good suggestion for a good cause in Bandra... A question that he most frequently receives from many interviewers about which one of Elvis Presley’s songs being his personal favorite, he says, “There are so many, I cannot think of any one in particular.” Sheila Pereira, a close friend and an oldneighbourof Nigel’s, says, “We are so proud that Nigel, our friend from Bandra has made it so big today.” It wouldn’t be wrong to say that we have our very own Elvis Presley, or heis ‘re-incarnated’ in the form of Nigel Kingsley from Bandra itself!
