Eagle Brigade saves Rebello road bungalow

The scenes witnessed on Rebello Road were straight out of a Bollywood movie. Location: in the very heart of Bandra West, near Supari Talao. Unscrupulous plotters, Mafia, goons, fear, action, reactions, police, saviours… and finally truth & peace prevails! Bungalow # 78, is built on a corner plot of St. Sebastian Society located at Rebello road. It is more than 2,000 sq ft - and was vacant for many years, after the old occupants expired. The heirs had kept a watchman to guard the premises. On 20th Feb, neighbours watched as an alleged builder, who claims ownership rights to the bungalow drove his Mercedes to the front gate and off loaded his goons, with orders to take over & stay in ‘his’ bungalow, after sending off the watchman. They were allegedly given Bisleri Bottles & other food items to sustain them for a long stay. As per orders from their ‘boss’, they broke the locks of the bungalow, frightened off the watchman with a ‘beating’ and took ‘possession’ of the premises. After loud screams were heard, fear shook the neighbourhood as all types of rumours spread. Meanwhile active members of St. Sebastian Society swung into action behind the scenes – to ensure a legal & practical solution. Now, the Eagle Brigade was on routine patrol and saw some suspicious looking men hovering in the bungalow compound. This scene got them curious. As some of the faces were familiar, they approached them. On enquiring why they were there, they were told that their ‘sahib’ had bought this bungalow – and he would be coming tomorrow. On further enquiry, the Eagle Brigade was told that their sahib has ‘documents’ to prove his right of ownership. Since Sebastian Society has leased these plots to catholic residents only, as lessee for 999 years – so how did this ‘ownership’ factor come in ? Turn to page 2 >>

All about Bandra Station Fined for “Indecent Behaviour”

The Bombay, Baroda, and Central India Railway (BB&CI) was a company incorporated in 1855 to undertake the task of constructing a railway line between Bombay and Vadodara in India. BB&CI completed the work in 1864. It was just about ten years that the railways had arrived in India and two railway companies - The Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR, now called CR) and the Bombay Baroda and Central India (BB&CI, now called WR) had begun operating in Bombay, fiercely competing with each other to vie passengers’ attention. It was amid this competition that Bandra station, then called Bandora, was established in 1864. The first suburban railway in India was started by BB&CI, operating between Virar and Colaba - a station in Bombay Backbay in 1867. On 12th April 1867, the first railway service was inaugurated with one train per day, between Virar and Colaba in south Bombay. But six years later the train frequency was increased to 24 each day, and now over a thousand trains stop at Bandra daily in both directions. The station had to look ‘attractive’ and so officers of the BB&CI Railway worked hard to prepare plans of the station building. In fact, the design and structure of the Bandra station building were finalised in London - and to get precision, the entire decorative roof and its arches were built there. Once ready, they were dismantled, put in a steamer ship and brought here. The station waited for its roof for more than four years. At Bandra, the structure was assembled again and put over the station around 1869. Even the Manglorean tiles over the station’s roof were specially manufactured for the station. The outer building, however, was built in 1888, city railway histo-

rian G.D. Patwardhan writes, in one of his railway chronicles. One of the main components is the porch outside the station, which was used by horse-drawn Victorias to drop and receive passengers. It is one of the most beautiful stations in Mumbai, built in typical vernacular style. Among the oldest stations on the suburban line, the colonial structure was built in the coastal style of architecture, giving it a distinct flavour. Byculla Railway station which was completed in 1857, is built along a similar design. This Station Building is the oldest one in India, the original structure is still in use. It predates CST (Victoria Terminus), Thana (Thane), and Bandra. In the past Bandra was called Vandre, Bandera, Bandura, Bandore, Pandara, Bandorah and Bandara. But finally it was officially designated as “Bandra”, when the railway station signboard was painted at the end of the last century and the Bandra station and platforms were built. The main building of the old station on the west side is now a heritage site, complete with a ‘crow’s nest’ atop it to look for arriving trains. Till as late as the 1930’s, Bandra had only one bus service from Pali Naka via Hill Road to the railway station. A handful of Bandra’s residents had motor vehicles; the other’s just walked to the railway station. A few years ago, Bandra railway station building has been set to regain its ‘old world charm’. To improve its visual appeal, the railways have been asked to remove giant hoardings on and around the grade I heritage structure. It has been restored with great care, complete with redtiled roofs and intricate eaves boards, iron windows and large doors - making it look exactly how it was built in the 1880s. All artificial partitions, walls and alterations done have been modified and the building has reinstated its originality as the English had built it. Rehan Merchant

In a shocking incident at Carter Road a 25-year-old man was booked by the Khar police in February when he hugged a female friend and planted a peck on her cheek. Kuber Sarup was booked under “indecent behaviour” in public. This innocent goodbye kiss cost Kuber Rs 1,200 and he was subjected to a long lecture on Indian culture at the police station. If he had not paid this fine he would have been put in the lock up. This incident sets a dangerous precedent - as if there’s going to be such arbitrary interpretation of law by the police then almost anyone can end up behind bars. Don’t we see movie actors hugging and kissing on films? Then, why weren’t those films banned and the actors and film-makers arrested for “indecent behaviour”? And just what is Indian culture? Is it the Vedic culture, the culture of the great Mughals or those of the colonial rulers, namely, the British and the Portuguese? Or, isn’t it a mixture of all these intermin-

gled with American culture that’s impacting us through movies, television, music, tourism, immigration and client interaction. Should we ban tourists from entering our country or halt television shows as they promote “indecent behaviour?” In fact, kissing on the cheek is an important tradition amongst members of my community and we’re definitely not foreigners. The other issue is that the police force appears to be focusing on trivialities when there are such pressing matters at hand like terrorism, murders, rape cases, corruption, robberies, incidents of cheating and more. They are not only overburdening the saturated legal system but losing their own focus. I think it’s time lectures and training must be given to the entire police force on what to focus on and how to deal with citizens. By estranging youth the police force would lose a valuable ally in the fight against crime. Vivek Pereira

23rd February. They are grateful to the Eagle Brigade, Sebastian Society & the Bandra Police. Now, they have started building a proper compound wall and got new security guards to enhance their safety. The surrounding neighbours, now feel a new sense of security, especially with the Eagle Brigade group around for any such help. We interviewed Haresh Wadhwani,32, living in the vicinity. He said, “This is the result of the nexus between local politicians & builders. These thugs should have long prison sentences, with their names published in all leading papers – as a deterrent, for creating such situations for old folks in Bandra & surrounding suburbs.”

To help resolve this, the Eagle Brigade coordinated with the Sebastian Society, through the co-operation of their President, Mr. Vivian Pereira & Secretary, Mr. Warren Fernandes for the legal documents - and then presented these as evidence to Inspector D.S. Patil and others at the Bandra Police Station. The Bandra Police along with the Eagle Brigade, now swung into action. Senior inspector of Bandra Police Station, Abhay Shastri registered cases of trespassing, criminal intimidation and threatening. The police sent their van, arrested all the ‘goons’ from the bungalow and saw that the fear in the neighbourhood was reduced. This enabled the real residents to take To contact the Eagle Brigade, call Benny rightful possession of their property on on 98209 28460.

What do residents of Bandra expect from their newly elected Councellor? Mr. Kanga, - Almeida Park The road opp. St. Joseph’s Convent (Manuel Gonsalves Road) has been dug up for the past 5 - 6 months, and we see hardly any workers doing the job. The concerned authorities should see that such work is done 24/7 so that main link roads are repaired as soon as possible. Diwali & Christmas has seen traffic jams here - and it seems that even Easter will pass with the repair work still incomplete. Also, the auto rickshaw guys need to be kept under control.

Russell Pereira -Sherly Rajan We have a severe dog pooh menace that’s messing the streets in Sherly Rajan. Cleanliness will get us hygienic & healthy surroundings. We need a better water pressure in this area, to ensure that all residents get enough municipal water. In our area the sewage is connected to the storm water drain and most roads are too narrow for a fire brigade/ambulance to enter in an emergency situation. To make matters worse, cars are being parked on both sides of these roads.

BMC - ALM meeting The bi-annual ALM meeting was held on Saturday, 10th March at the Conference Hall next to Bhabha Hospital at 10.30 a.m. It was chaired by the AMC Mr. Sunil Dhamne. The meeting began with a felicitation for our newly elected Municipal Councillors. It was both an honour and a pleasure that all 6 of them responded to the invitation & graced the occasion. Mr. Tanvir Patel (97), Mrs. Karen D'mello (96), Mr. Asif Zakaria (95), Mrs. Sunita Wawekar (94), Mrs. Alka Kelkar (93) & Mrs. Gita Chavan (92), spoke for a couple of minutes each on what they would do for their ward. Though they represented different political parties, they spoke positively about their interaction with the citizens of their areas. The meeting then proceeded to discuss

the following issues: 1) Reactivation of fire hydrants which had got sunken or submerged because of increase in heights of roads during repair and relaying of roads. 2) Political and commercial hoardings and various rules and regulations applying to them. 3) Pre-monsoon preparation by the systematic cleaning of storm water drains. 4) Survey of restaurants and the enforcement of them using grease traps so that kitchen waste is not put into storm water drains and clogging them. 5) The sale of tobacco products within 100 metres of educational institutions. Editor’s Letter Dear Readers, As the weather warms us up, the spring in our step leads us to a lot of happening events in our local areas and beyond – making us march ahead in life. Bandra is indeed unique – a melting pot of various mindsets, cultures & faiths – living in harmony at the most central location of Mumbai. It’s no wonder that most foreigners prefer to live here, when staying in Mumbai. They seem to like the ambience, the local people & world-class facilities. This year Holi – the carnival of colours & Womens Day have coincided. Then Gudi Padwa marks the commencement of the Hindu lunisolar calendar year. Jamshed Navroj is celebrated by our Parsi friends, while this whole month of March is part of the holy season of Lent for the Christian community. With the BMC elections behind us, we have a new surge of energy all around. Now, all that was promised in manifestos will be centre stage issues in various ALM agendas. Our new councilors seem to be very capable persons. Only time will tell how this translates into reality – resulting in a better Bandra. Concerned citizens can & should use us – your local community voice, to get your message across to the appropriate authorities. Our youth are always in the forefront for events galore. Do use Bandra Buzz – your local media platform to highlight your event, for better coverage & visibility. Bandraites – you are the eyes & ears of your locality. Report any event, issue or news that needs to be published & shared with others. We need ‘whistle blowers’, to keep our local community alert. As we had missed out on the crucial letter of Mrs. Pauline Fernandes,( a remarkably alert person – considering her age) we are publishing it now - and then closing the ‘Sherly Rajan or Goon Raj’ issue for further correspondence. Meanwhile, let’s make the most of the moment – and celebrate the wonderful spirit of spring.

Global warming How do you feel when you keep your hand near fire, or u burn your hand while cooking, or even just a spark of fire coming near to your skin ,can you handle it ? The answer is obviously a no then imagine the Earth bearing it all! Well this is what we wished to warn people about, Global Warming. Our six day campaign from 23rd to the 28th January, was not just about spreading awareness to people about global warming, everyone is aware but to warn people about it. So we the students of T.Y.BMM, namely Nikita Bhambhani, Suraj Jaiswar, Riddhi Desai, Vaibhavi Ratish Kumar, Leena Varma, Krishna Kamal from Smt. M.M.K. College of Commerce and Economics, Bandra conducted a six day event in the college. We had a kiosk set up, wherein people filled up a form with questions about Global warming and were given more knowledge via our pamphlets, posters and banners were put up all across our collage, we encouraged rickshawala’s to turn off the engines while standing on a signal, and put up posters on their rickshaws as well. Since our target audience was youngsters, we held different events during the span of those six days our aim was to aware them and encourage them towards the cause, there was a fun part involved in every event so that they get motivated. There was a green band given to each person coming to our kiosk which said, “I am a nature’s friend”. The first event that we had was ‘Globe-o-facts’, wherein participants played a quiz round, each participant got a badge and the winner was given a gift sponsored by our gift partners, “Nirmitee Art Connoisseurs”. The other event was ‘Global Hunt’, a treasure hunt related to the process of planting a tree with twist and turns, there was a tremendous response for the same, and the participants enjoyed planting a tree and hence were also encouraged to plant more trees and help save the earth. The participants were given batches and cans

of ‘Red Bull’. There was a photography contest named,’ Zoom In’ on the causes of global warming, wherein the participants had to click photographs on the things that cause global warming, they were judged partly on their photo likes put up on our Facebook Page and partly by us. The winner was given a gift sponsored by our gift partners. Then there was a drama performed by the team in the college campus, which was focused on effects of using plastic bags, water shortage and the government’s role to stop global warming. There was a day for a ‘freaky fair’ which basically was to create a fair sort of atmosphere in the collage and was held just for the fun and frolic part of the event. There were small games for everyone like bowling, handling a water soaked brick for two minutes and other such games. Again the response was flattering. Winners were given the badge and chocolates. We also made a documentary wherein we got celebrity bites from Mr. Suresh Menon, Mr.Gaurav Chopra, Mr. Darpan Shrivastav, Mr. Romit Raj, Mr.Anupam Bhattacharya, Ms.Manasi Scot, Mr. Khushal Tondon, Mr. Vinod Singh and Ms.Maanvi. The documentary was about what exactly is global warming, the causes and effects, and what are and could be the circumstances if we do not take any steps towards it. There was a screening and a seminar held wherein speakers from the NGO ‘Greenpeace’ came in and shared their knowledge for a better learning on the same. There was a ‘Mascot’ named ‘Sheru from Junglistan’ bought in which roamed around the collage campus and entertained the students as well encouraged them to attend the seminar. As a whole the event was a great learning experience for the team as well as the students, it was a well organized, well appreciated and an event with lots of thrills and frills. Nikita Bhambhani

WAR - Women and Rights To create awareness about sexual harassment TYBMM students of MMK College of Commerce and Economics started a campaign WAR- Women and Rights. A kiosk was conducted in the college campus from 21st to 25th February. Everyday different activities like games, surveys and other such things were held to spread awareness about sexual harassment. Through the kiosk they educated the students about the meaning of sexual harassment. Most people think sexual harassment is only physical which is not true. Sexual harassment also consist of passing vulgar comments, eve teasing and many such things. This was one of the main message that was spread through the campaign. During the kiosk vital information was given out which included the laws under which the accused can be booked for sexual harassment, the police help line number for women and actions that can be taken when you face any form of sexual harassment. Incidences of Sexual harassment are rising day by day and almost every women or girl faces it. The main motive of WAR was to equip the girls with the information necessary to book the accused and call for help if needed. Pamphlets were

distributed in the college about the same. A seminar was held on 25th February in the college where the owner and few people from the NGO WTPF- We The People Foundation an NGOwhich stands for sexual harassment among other causes visited. They spoke to the students about what their NGO focuses on and Mr JasonThemesfieldt spoke about the very famous Amboli case where Kenan Santos and Ruben Fernandes (jason being Kenan's cousin) were murdered brutally by gang of locals. Seminar focused on many things like what measures are taken when one goes through sexual harassement, self defenceand ways to handle such situations , queries were answered ,personal experiences were shared and many more. People were motivated and encouraged to 'stand up', 'never give up' and keep fighting. WAR took this initiative to educate women and girls about the ever increasing problem of sexual harassment and to equip them with all the vital information needed to tackle such situations. The Explosion of Exams The S.S.C Board has finally declared what was most un-awaited by the tenth standard. Yes! You have truly guessed it right - it is the ultimate suicide point regarded by some. But no..there is never an end to a situation it is just the beginning of a bright new future. Heads held high and an overpowering self-esteem is what will help. Being confident is good but being overconfident kills the person you are and what you can be. The students who do not prepare from scratch are those that suffer. Studying last minute will make you panic and depressed. Classes like Mahesh Tutorials are given the title of being the head of this game. Air conditioned rooms and almost a comfortable batch of fifty builds up the atmosphere. Students are also encouraged by counselors and the every week test being added with a before hand board exam and prelim practiced like done in schools makes them self dependent and distressed for their upcoming exams held on 3rd April. The solution for being the ace of the game is preparing an accommodating schedule. Taking each subject and focusing on it completely one day at a time always helps. Early risers are always benefitted as the brain acts like a hungry stomach waiting to eat something essential, therefore observing each answer related to the question and storing it thoroughly. Physical activities refreshes the body and rejuvenates the mind making the student more convinced to study and saving time for themselves. True the more you study, the more you

retain - but as an advise, studying the entire day or for late hours tires you and therefore can make you ‘sick’. The ones who study last minute should not be that afraid now, because even the famously known people like Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton were not that hardworking, yet they have reached their destination and are now renowned. Who knows, maybe you can be our next ‘ Rajnikant ?’. We are the youth of today and without cheating we all are going to prove that we are worth it. We have the spirit and integrity of proving it. So, bow down with proudness by being in the spotlight and introducing the audience that we, yes only we are the ‘best’. Though whatever we have gone through this year, by the end of it the people who thought of us negatively will be discredited as we have finally proved them wrong. And yes - not to forget, how much ever stress you go through you just got to give in your 99% and ask God to give his 1% I’m sure it will be done the opposite manner. Hence the conclusion exams are those days that lasts for long. That is why, I always sing when will it end song, Stress, tiredness,no fun is whats included, new excuses are always substituted, Get 90% is your parents scream, An ‘A’ grade is the ultimate dream, No it is absolutely not hard, So do not act like a retard and before that party hard! A Blues night to remember

Crowd enjoying some blues music at the Mahindra Blues Festival 2012.

Buddy Guy (centre) with John Lee Hooker Jr., Taj Mahal, Ana Popovic and Robert Randolph

Music fans from Mumbai and beyond, converged together at the Mehboob Studios to attend the second edition of the Mahindra Blues Festival on the weekend 11th and 12th February, to watch mega blues artists like Taj Mahal, John Lee Hooker, Jr and Ana Popovic perform. The icing on the cake was the darling of them all, guitar legend Buddy Guy. The first day had acts like local band Overdrive trio, followed by ace vocalist John Lee Hooker, Jr who went down memory lane performing tracks from his albums and a few songs from his dad’s repertoire which included ‘Boom, Boom, Boom’ and ‘Don’t look back’. Delighted to be in Mumbai for the very first time, he said jokingly,“I am happy to be in the country that shares the same skin color as my skin”. Recounting his father, the late John Lee Hooker’s illustrious past, he added that it was his determination for making his own mark in the music industry as John Lee Hooker Jr. and not just the son of the great John Lee Hooker. Shifting the scene to Stage three, we had Henry St Clair Fredericks better known to the world by his strange stage name Taj Mahal. The American Grammy Award

long sleeve shirt, she maintained her cool when someone from the audience remarked “Tips you’re looking hot today”, she curtly retorted “Let’s talk about the music, baby” and began her tirade of rocking blues. 35 year old Belgrade based blues singer – guitarist and soon to be mother Ana Popovic set consisted of a chain of bluesy tunes in her own technique and style… mainly jazzy instrumentals and tight blues – rock grooves. The audience found this pretty hard to digest and many moved out heading for the final act on stage three to watch legendary performer Buddy Guy. On his last performance here, Buddy Guy showcased amazing guitar wizardry that was firmly etched in the Mumbai audience mind. Knowing he would have something rolled up his sleeve again this year, the crowd waited eagerly for him. This year was no better. From playing the guitar with a drumstick, rubbing it over his chest, to picking his guitar with his teeth, the 75 year old kept his fans on their feet asking for more. His walk into the crowd was the closest his fans could get to him, many catching the action on their mobile phones, some straining to

winning blues musician incorporates world music into his music. Though he hardly spoke to the audience, his songs told everything about him. They were lapped up by all who were present; some slow ballads while some pure dance material. Sporting dark glasses and hat, Mahal played the electric box guitar at times switched over to the harmonica and banjo. He and his band consisting of bass guitarist and drummer managed to weave a fan base instantly with his good lyrics and music. At an interview a day before the show, Mahal recounted how he came up with the strange name.”I read a lot on India when I was young and I was fascinated with the monument named Taj Mahal. I have not yet seen the Taj this time as I went to Goa, but I will come back next year cover Goa, Mumbai and end with Agra”. Beginning at 6pm on Sunday was support acts Warren Mendonsa’s Blackstratblues from Mumbai, featuring Nikhil D’souza on two soul stirring songs. This was followed by Shillong’s master blaster female crooner Tipriti from Soulmate who gave a rousing performance. Dressed in figure hugging skin tight short pant and a

Back on stage he invited special guest for the evening, pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph who gave an impressive show, using the slide technique on his guitar which is also known as ‘Sacred Steel’. A few minutes past midnight and Buddy Guy brought the house down, when he called on all the performers of both days to share stage space in a grand blues finale that many would remember for a long time to come. Though many people made their way home, some browsed around checking out the merchandise stalls selling CDs, DVDS and T –shirts, while others decided to grab a bite at the food stalls selling pizzas to Indian fare, while others hit the bar to party the night away. With five mega international artists, and a few Indian acts, the festival has already painted a positive picture for Blues music in India. Another year has passed, exhibiting and promoting the genre that has yet to receive the recognition it deserves in India. Like Blues music itself, this festival promises to grow on you, and stay with you forever. Verus Ferreira

National Seminar - Press in India held at St. Paul’s Media Complex

St. Paul’s Media Complex, situated at 24th Road, TPS III, Bandra(W) was centre stage to India on Saturday, 3rd March 2012. Organizers: the Society of St. Paul, Mumbai, in association with the CBCI Office for Social Communications & the Media Desk of the Catholic Communication Centre, Archdiocese of Bombay presented a very well attended National seminar on ‘The Press In India’. The theme was: ‘Mandate for Social Transformation’. The high standards, the ambience & the hospitality throughout the day were superb – with great co-ordination done by the M. C. Pearl D’Souza. Bandra was indeed honoured to host such an event. The Inaugural Session started with a welcome dance by the daughters of St. Paul – followed by the lighting of the lamp by dignitaries, assisted by the PDDM Sisters. His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, in his inaugural address told the rapt audience that the media needs speed, accuracy & completeness. He spoke about the tremendous role of the media in challenging & forming public opinion. Inspite of digital media, the print media is still very powerful. It’s the media (your morning newspaper) that influences your agenda for the day. He went on to assert that the media – press & social media are ‘blood brothers’. The media should be a watchdog to assert the dignity of the common man. Jounalists should pick on news that matter. He said that Advertising gives the media the financial muscle to expand & grow in quality & quantity. As the public mood can be controlled by the press, he advised self-control: avoiding too much of sensation, exaggeration & advertising. He touched on the topic of Defamation, Paid News(Advertorials) & how unbiased content is imperative. Using an

analogy, the Archbishop told us how the media was like a hi-speed car – if the brakes fail, it could lead to chaos & war. After the keynote address by Mr. B.G. Verghese, former editor HT & IE, the Chief Guest Justice Michael Saldanha, Rtd High Court Judge, who specially came from Bangalore spoke on many legal aspects – including ‘Defamation’ – the greatest threat to journalist, grossly misused by courts to muzzle the press and ’Contempt of Court’ - which requires an unconditional apology to escape punishment. The 1st Panel discussion on ‘Relevance of the Print & Electronic Media was very well moderated by renowned columnist Robert Clements. Panelist Naresh Fernandes, Journalist & Author spoke on the power of the press as a potent force for justice. He touched on Lifestyle Sections, Advertorials – as the fine line between news & ads, how ‘Social Media’ lacked the context of events & that the print media would be still around even in 2030. Panelist Neeta Kolhatkar, Bureau Chief, News X, Mumbai told the audience that ‘live TV reporting’ has got the latest news to our homes in real time. She said that the medium is not the issue, it’s how we present it. As a Citizen Journalist, people can make a difference to their immediate environment. She mentioned how the media should be a voice for the voiceless. Panelist Brian Tellis, Chairman-Fountain Head Promotions & Events, spoke passionately about ‘Radio’ as a mobile media, being cheap – yet having an incredible reach. With FM starting in India in 1993, he enlightened the audience how it was indeed sad that ‘news’ had to be taken only from a govt. capsule. After some interesting audience interaction with the panelist & concluding remarks by Robert Clements, everyone had a break for lunch.

The 2nd Panel Discussion was on the topic of ‘Freedom & Responsibility of the Press’, moderated by Bishop Chacko Thottumarickal, SVD, Chairperson, CBCI Media Commission. Panelist Carol Andrade, Editor, Afternoon Despatch & Courier, Mumbai spoke about reporting with a perspective – and how the press should be guardians of the nation. People depend on us for unbiased news that can make a difference. She spoke how media memory is short and events are not news, unless reported. Panelist Jehangir Patel, Editor of Parsiana told the audience that the internet had leveled the playing field, but ‘print’ still has a niche need. He spoke how Editors can give direction & depth to a publication, if not controlled by people with vested interests. He spoke hoe knowledge is a powerful weapon which shold be used for the common good. Panelist Aakar Patel, former Editor, Mid-day & co-founder, Hill Road Media told the budding journalist – BMM students from St. Andrew’s & other colleges that there was excellent scope in the print & other media. He said that quality content was very important and that they should always strive for high standards of reporting. The art of being a good reporter is the art of ‘conversation’. The 3rd Panel Discussion was on the topic of ‘The Press as Watchdog & Whistle Blower’ & Investigative Reporter, moderated very ably by Gerson D’Cunha - AGNI. Panelist Shoma Chaudhury, Managing Editor, Tehelka told us how the media missed out the main issue of ‘India Against Corruption’. She was against too much rhetoric – and as for whistle blowing, it’s not all that easy. The fact of the matter is that the media is structurally financed by corporates, certain exposures are extremely complex may just not be possible.

Panelist Y.P. Singh, former IPS lawyer & Anti-Corruption Activist told us that he has been using the press for accomplishing mutual objectives. He told us that the whistle blower exposes corruption within the organization that he/she works – it’s an insider view. If there is reprisal there is no remedy. The press have certain dynamics which prevent them from being un-biased. He said that paid news is ‘corrupt news’, as it is a one-sided view. Panelist Mayank Gandhi, Social Activist, Member, ‘ India Against Corruption’ said that while the goal has not been so successful, the purpose of awakening the masses has started. This movement has ebbs & flows, but the ‘impact’ has begun. The media has helped to cover all events in a great way, to see the ‘fire’ in the hearts of our people. The ‘Vote of Thanks’ was done by Rev. Fr. Michael Raj, Provincial, SSP, followed by a patriotic singing of the National Anthem by all at the seminar, led by the SSP Junior Brothers. This national event ended with good like-minded interaction over tea & snacks – everyone definitely more enlightened & empowered. M. N. C. D.

Nutrition for women Nutrition plays different roles during differing stages of a woman's life. Women need fewer calories but more nutrients than men. During childhood, food fuels growth. A balanced diet with a variety of foods will ensure adequate intake of nutrients for a good growth. A good source of essential fats and a good quality protein is a must in the early years of development. During the teens Iron and calcium are important than ever. There is loss of iron through the blood loss during menstruation. Iron rich foods like red meat, chicken, spinach, kale, lentils help to boost iron. A Vitamin C food like kiwi, orange, berries enhances the absorption of iron. During child bearing years, diet plays a role in fertility, a healthy pregnancy, prevention of chronic diseases. Folic acid is of utmost importance during this

stage of life. Including Citrus Fruits. Leafy greens, dry beans and peas will help get folate in our daily routine. Calcium rich foods like milk, cheese ,leafy greens ensures optimal health to cope with the increasing demands of milk production. During menopause, from magnesium to phytoestrogens, to eating little and often, good nutrition is an essential step to ensuring this stage of life is a positive one. Include oestrogenic foods like soya beans, tofu, flaxseeds, fruits and vegetables to make sure this change in life is smooth. Consume more whole grains, eat smaller and frequent meals. A multivitamin tablet plays a vital role. Omega supplements help to sustain through the hormone imbalance in the body. Pooja Bhargava

What should I do when my phone battery heats up ? In case the phone battery is heating up, immediately remove the battery and reinstall it, as there could be some malfunction. Also, check if there are any unrequired applications running in the background, which are causing the phone to heat up. If the problem persists, the phone needs to be serviced, as battery heating up is not good on health grounds.

Where do I download applications on my blackberry ? Research In Motion (RIM) - owners of Blackberry brand have ‘BB app world’ in all their blackberry phones, from where the user can download games & other applications. In case if you do not have app world, you need to re-install it, as applications cannot be downloaded without it. My father is 71 years old, which phone should I gift him ? Ideally, any phone with a good keypad & clear display should be good, as elderly people generally need a practical phone. Some added features are most welcome. Samsung has just launched a folding phone which is very practical. It also has some features like mobile tracker, mobile prayer, etc - which are very popular with the elderly people as it gives them a sense of security. The cost too is also quite reasonable. Janelle gets a ‘new look’ for the party season Before: In Consultation I found the model’s hair very limp and frizzy especially at the ends. It even had a wavy texture. Plus, her face had blemishes. So, I thought of giving her a cut that would accentuate her features and bring out her true beauty. I also wanted the look to be low maintenance and versatile. Hair: I gave her a square layered cut with fringes to give her a young trendy look. We also did a Keratin Treatment to remove the frizz and add shine to the hair. Now her hair is simply marvelous. Makeup: We used Krylon and MAC products to give her a natural look. Then we covered her blemishes and dark circles with a concealer. With the application of mascara, her eyes looked truly pretty. A light pink blush-on and lipstick and the model was ready to steal hearts at parties! Fashion Tips: * If you are heavy on your belly and thighs - and you wonder how to conceal those flabs and yet look trendy, you should take a one shoulder drape in Lycra or Stretch Satin or even Jersey, which you can flaunt for a Brunch a Dinner or a Night Out with friends. * If you have a double chin and broad neck you can smartly hide it by using a scarf round your neck. * Black Gold and Brown are the best colours to hide those flabs they work Magic! Lent in Bandra deanery Ash Wednesday morning & evening after Masses, saw the Christian faithful from Bandra with ashes on their foreheads, to mark the beginning of Lent. The traditional purpose of Lent is the penitential preparation of the believer — through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events of the Passion of Christ on Good Friday, which then culminates in the celebration of Jesus rising from the dead on Easter Sunday – thereby defeating death. During Lent, many of the faithful commit to fasting or giving up certain types of

luxury as a form of penitence. The Stations of the Cross, a devotional commemoration of Christ's carrying the Cross and of His execution, are often observed. According to the gospels, Jesus spent forty days fasting in the desert before the beginning of His public ministry, where He endured temptation by Satan. Thus, Lent is described as being forty days long – a time for renewal of faith and walking with the Lord. In Bandra, Holy week church services are well attended by Christian believers. Lent ends with Easter celebrations, when every believer wishes others the ‘Peace & Joy of the Risen Lord’. Joseph D’Souza

Let’s Celebrate Women! On March 8, every year, the world celebrates International Women’s Day, calling to mind the centuries-old struggle of women to obtain equal rights, and to recognize the great contributions women have made to the cause of progress and development, the world over. The tradition of setting aside a day to focus attention on issues relating to women, possibly began in the United States, National Women’s Day, on February 28, 1909. The next year, a world conference — Socialist International — held in Austria, gave it an international character. As a follow-up to this meet, in 1911, the first-ever International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, where over a million people, both men and women, participated in different rallies, demanding equal rights for women (right to vote, to hold public office and the right to work, all of which were denied to women till then). In 1913, as part of the peace movement brewing on the eve of World War I, Russian women observed their first International Women’s Day on the last Sunday of February. In 1917, with 2 million Russian soldiers dead in the war, Russian women once again chose the last Sunday of February to strike for ‘bread and peace’. Four days later, the Czar of Russia was forced to abdicate, and the provisional government that came into power granted women the right to vote. This historic day fell on February 23 on the Julian Calendar in Russia, which coincided with March 8 on the Gregorian Calendar, used by people elsewhere. Finally, in 1975, the United Nations General Assembly set its seal on the celebration, officially declaring March 8 as U.N.-sponsored International Women’s Day. However, in spite of worldwide and national level celebrations on International Women’s Day, it remains a fact that women continue to be discriminated against, exploited, and ill-treated, at least

in our country. Incidents of women being tortured for dowry, gangraped or being forcibly tonsured as reported almost daily in our newspapers and electronic media only prove the above. As usual, International Women’s Days come and go; but, women continue to pay the price for being born so! Can we not do something about this? Let’s try the following which I believe can make a difference in the lives of countless women in our country: • Treat women/girls with respect and dignity at home, in school/college, and on the street. Show utmost courtesy to them, desist from eve-teasing, ragging, etc; if needed defend them in such situations. • Help create strong public opinion against rape, female infanticide, etc., and social evils or practices like child marriage, dowry, forced use of burqua, Sati, etc. as these destroy the dignity of women or degrade them in society. • Oppose any move to portray women in bad light, particularly in films, commercials, hoardings, fashion shows, etc. • When possible, highlight the great contributions Indian women have made to the growth and development of the nation, and the world at large, like Annie Besant, Kasturba Gandhi, Kamala Nehru, Vijayalakshmi Pandit, and Sarojini Naidu, same of who have played important roles in the freedom struggle. Moreover, women like Shirin Ebadi, Aung San Suu Kyi, Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Medha Patkar, Kalpana Chawla and Hillary Clinton, have all done the international community proud. Women the world over can certainly look up to them with pride and pick up a lesson or two from them. Hats off to these valiant women!

Celtic, Packers & Geostanne emerge Champs at Bandra Gym

The pace was relentless, the moves innovative, and the contest absorbing. One couldn’t have asked for a better advertisement for soccer on Monday, 27th Feb night at the Bandra Gymkhana rink football tourney played at the Salcette Catholic Housing Society’s D’Monte Park Grounds on Perry Road, Bandra. Bandra Clubs – Celtic 70, Bandra Packers and Geostanne United - reigned supreme in this Kotak Mahindra Bank sponsored men, women and veterans events of this All-Mumbai, +5-a-side football tournament witnessed by a large and appreciative crowds from the 20th to the 27th of February, 2012. Combining well in both attack and defence, in which Nishant Mehra played a pivotal role, Celtic with two first half strikes by Altamesh Sayed and Raunak Killinger helped them beat Our Lady of Health, Sahar 2-0 in the mens event. To add to the Sahar team miseries, their dependable linkman Leander Almeida sustained a foot injury in the first half itself and was forced to sit out for the remainder of the match. His absence from the playing arena proved a setback for the Sahar lads as it created a huge void in the midfield. Altamesh Sayed was judged the ‘Player fo the Final' and the late Raymond Saldhana Trophy for the “Player of the Tournament’ was awarded to Raunak Killinger. In the semi-finals, Celtic 70 had beaten

“Being a young Bandra side, at the start of the tournament no one would have expected us to win. With almost 60 teams participating from all over Mumbai we were definitely not favorites. With regular practice held by Raunak Killinger and with the help of experienced players like Nishant Mehra and Kunal Sawant, the side seemed to have an edge over the rest. The finals was a class act with the talented Altamash and calm Raunak scoring breath taking goals ensuring Celtic to be the winners of the tournament.” Alaric Sequeira

Marol United 3-0 and Our Lady of Health Sahar had beaten M-10, Parel 1-0. Bandra Packers clinched the women’s crown edging out 7070 Bandra 3-2 via the tie breaker after both teams were 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Consistent scorer Jennifer Peter, with an early strike helped Bandra Packers grab the initiative, but they were unable to hold on to the advantage as their opponents 7070 Bandra fought back - and in the last minute found the equalizer through Lubina Shaikh. In

the tie breaker, Bandra Packers scored through Jennifer Peter and Karishma Vazirani, while only Neha Ture was successful for 7070 Bandra. Bandra Packers’ Jenifer Peter was judged the ‘Player of the Final” while Ruth Joseph of 7070 Bandra was awarded the Late Raymond Saldhana Trophy for the “Player of the tournament”. Geostanne United, Bandra overcame Xavierites, Vile Parle in an exciting finals of the veterans event. After a barren first

half Geostanne’s Douglas D’Sena bulged the net five minutes from the final whistle to give his team a solitary goal victory. Douglas D’Sena was judged the “Player of the Final” for scoring the crucial winning goal for Geostanne while the late Raymond Saldhana Trophy for the “Player of the Tournament” went to Xavierite’s Maxie Saby Fernandes. Newly elected Municipal Corporator Karen D’Mello was the Chief Guest at the finals and distributed the prizes. Sports loving Corporator Asif Zakaria, who is a popular face at almost all sporting events in Bandra, was the Guest of Honour.

St. Andrew’s College wins Goan Sports Association Champions The stage was set for a mouth-watering clash. It was the finals of the Goan Sports Association (GSA)-organised inter-college football tournament. Fighting for the winners tag were two Bandra-based colleges - St. Andrew’s and MMK - and after 90 minutes, it was St. Andrew’s that walked with top honours, winning the game 2-1. Coming into the finals, both teams showed promise beating their rivals with high quality football. Such was the quality of football played, that at the end of the game, the Chief Guest couldn’t help but remark saying that the game was of much better quality than most Elite Division matches in the city. It was St. Andrew’s that grabbed the lead, after Dion Menezes scored a scorcher of a goal, volleying from just ahead of the half line. Even though the

keeper dived full length, it gave him no chance, as the ball crashed into the top right corner. But, MMK were rewarded for their efforts minutes later, after Zeeshan Shaikh scored from a rebound of a free kick from close range. St. Andrew’s ‘sealed’ the tie after they were awarded a penalty, and Captain Pratik Patil made no mistake, scoring from the spot. It was a hard fought match from both teams, evident from the fact that the referee had to dish out four red cards - and by the end of the game, both teams finished with 9 players on the field. While it was a well-deserved win for St. Andrew’s, MMK will have to wait until next year to prove their point.

Blakc & Coshish ‘Come Together’

The Rotaract Club of Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues college of Engineering organized a fund raiser on the weekend of the 25th and the 26th of February. The two events namely “Come Together” and “A Goodwill Run” had the sole purpose of spreading awareness about child welfare and education. The proceedings of the fund raiser were to be donated to “The Aseema Charitable Trust” which works for the welfare and education of underprivileged children and “The Kripa Foundation” which currently is working on a project to rehabilitate abandoned street kids of Dharavi, suffering from HIV-AIDS. On the evening of the 25th

of February, the Carter Road amphitheater saw two of Mumbai’s biggest bands 'Blakc' and 'Coshish' Come Together to support the noble cause of the Rotaractors. The bands with their huge fan following played for over three hours and attracted an audience of over 400. The concert was a medium of spreading awareness about the need to provide an education for these underprivileged children as also a fundraiser for the aforesaid NGOs. The pedestrians who set out for their evening walks also stopped by to catch a few glimpses of these bands performing and congratulated the organizers for doing a splendid

job. The following day i.e on the 26th of February, a Marathon was organized by the Rotaractors from the Fr. Agnel Ashram, Bandstand up to Otters Club and back. The Charity run called “The Goodwill Run” spanned a total distance of about 4 km and was flagged off by Mrs. Alka Kerkar, Corporator of the BMC H-Ward, Section 93. About 80 runners of all age groups took part in this Charity Run. Shahnawaz Shaikh, Abhishek Dalvi and Rakesh Lakda bagged first, second and third place among the boys and Andrea Steadler, Mamata Paasi and Yogita Paasi bagged

Andrew’s College bans 118 students from exams On 5th March 2012, at around 9 am, parents & students pleaded with St. Andrew’s College Principal Marie B. Fernandes to allow them to appear for their F. Y. B. A. exams – admitting their fault of non-attendance, but willing to pay a penalty of fines or a cut in their marks. “We’re all sorry – madam, please understand us… they will lose a full year. We beg you to do something”. A group of around 25 parents & students have been coming to the college ever since the exams began, to get a breakthrough to this issue. They claim that the college author-

ities are just playing with the careers of ‘freshers’ in college – and should not be so harsh. The students claim that those who played for the college in sports were allowed to appear for their exams, while those who took part in college events (extra curricular activities: eg. plays, dances…) – and as a result had to skip classes, were not allowed to appear for their exams. They felt this was very unfair. “What is the use of representing this college?”. “ Also, this notice letter to the parents was sent to us only on the

1st of March - just one day before the first exam. Yet, the letter is dated 24th Feb 2012. Other colleges send this notice at least a month in advance.” Out of frustration, some students told us, “What do we do now – we never expected this from a catholic college…we need to go to the University to resolve this issue”. “I did not ask you to dance”, was the response a student got from the college admin – and she said with feeling, “Heck, why did I ever represent this college. All this really hurts us!”.

the first, second and third place among the girls respectively. The event was a huge success and the organizers were applauded for their relentless efforts. Rtn. Mohinder Pal Singh, President of the Rotary Club of Bombay Bandra who supported these young Rotaractors for the two events congratulated them. “It was indeed a pleasure to be associated with such a fantastic event, must say, both the events were well organized & excellently executed”. Amit Shenoy

The college principal told us that this attendance issue was mentioned on the college website & the notice boards – yet they did not take heed. Now, nothing can be done. “I don’t like to do this – You (the parents/stu dents) have signed the orientation records. I have to follow rules – right now, I have exams going on, please excuse me!” The college Dean Mr. Mascarenhas, who allegedly had not attended St. Andrew’s college for a couple of days, told us that these students had an attendance record of less than 10% - so there will be no change in decision. ‘Rejoyce’ this Easter The Bagel Shop

If you were planning to celebrate this Easter with an Easter Cake, a Bunny or a Bonnet, then Rejoyce Cakes is the place to be! Located near Mount Carmel Church on Chapel Road, this place is hard to miss - well, not because of its location, but because of the most delicious treats available here. At the helm of things here is Mrs Joyce Fernandes - yes , you guessed it right, hence, the name ‘Rejoyce’. While the outlet is just a little over 5 years, she has with her a wealth of experience now spanning more than 30 years, besides winning laurels (including a 1st place at Ind-Bake cake decorating competition at IHM, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai) for her high level of skill in cake-making and decoration. Started off as a hobby, she now literally eats,

sleeps and breathes cakes. She picked up the trade from Sophia College and made the most of her overseas trips with her now-retired husband, Capt. Alfred Fernandes, picking up the finer aspects of cake making. Experimenting novel designs and creativity is a skill she enjoys, much evident from the cakes showcased at the outlet, which is a real delight to the eyes. “I make cakes for all occasions, be it weddings, birthdays, christenings et al,” says an affable Joyce, who has now gained a lot of popularity in Bandra - and whose creations are just marvellous. So, this Easter, be sure not to miss out on the ‘Easter Goodies’ on offer at Rejoyce Cakes, where every moment is an occasion!!! Valerian D'Costa

Located at Pali Mala Road, The Bagel Shop has a very picturesque setting. We entered the quaint little eatery and noticed people on either side of us sitting at ease, relaxed and sipping hot coffee. There is a romantic feel about this place created by the flowerpots and lanterns hanging from the ceiling. It is frequented by a variety of clientele but popularized by people who like their space & privacy while working. There was a sanguine atmosphere in the open air lounge. Moving inside, we arrived at the counter which displayed a variety of brownies & snacks. The Blueberry Cheesecake is heavenly & was a prominent standout among the rest. The Cheesecake is a definite must try, as it is a special dessert. All the base ingredients, mainly the cheese is indigenously prepared. We then met up with Mr. Anil Kably, the owner of The Bagel Shop - a real warm and charming person indeed. The welcoming feel of the cushioned cane furniture and magical charm of the outer

lounge was reminiscent of Goa. We sat in the outer lounge. The Menu boasted of a large variety of Bagels, but the most popular is the Salmon and Cheese Bagel. My colleague and I opted for a Roast Chicken Bagel and Pork Ham and Cheese Bagel, which we topped off with a Kiwi smoothie and Blackcurrant smoothie. The Bagel’s had a perfect chewy texture and the fillings were profound. The creamy cheese oozed out of the Bagel and the meat was well marinated. The healthy and nutritious yoghurt based Smoothie’s are absolutely delicious. The service was quick and excellent and our Bagel’s arrived hot, with a crisp exterior and soft interior. These Bagel’s are ideal for foodies as well as the weight conscious - as they are healthy and a meal in themselves. All in all, The Bagel Shop is a must try and whether you go alone or in company, you will have a true Bagel experience. Nayan Sreenivasan
