Why Hill Road tops Traffic Congestion in Bandra

Above: Haphazard parking & double parking of vehicles on either side of Hill Road compounded by lack of traffic cops is resulting in gridlocks that last long at times Let’s go shopping, let’s buy clothes & accessories, let’s go to eat …But, where at Bandra can you do all this? ‘Hill Road’… the shopping hub of Bandra that provides anything & everything in terms of shopping, is the best place to visit in Bandra when you are out on your quest to buy something. This bizarre shopping at Hill road which stretches right from Marks & Spencer till St. Peter’s Church is cluttered with traffic, hawkers, pedestrians, cars & autorickshaws, no place for parking & moreover, no place to even walk during the peak hours.

Do you know why there is so much traffic congestion and chaos of people at Hill Road? And how can it be solved or at least reduced to some extent? Peera Patel, the manager of Riddhi Art Jewellery at Hill Road, said, “The traffic is mainly because there is no proper parking at entire Hill Road. People park their vehicles for hours together as they are busy shopping and the cars block the way till then. Some traffic measures and proper parking space will help solve the problem. But, the state of crowding at Hill Road is far

better now than previous years.” Another shopkeeper mentioned, “You can park anywhere at Hill Road at your own risk just be aware of the tow officials.” This practice of parking anywhere at Hill Road leads to a lot of traffic jams as the road is uneven in breadth throughout the stretch and has vehicles moving continuously. To add to the turmoil, hawkers eat up the space on the road as they need to carry on their business too. Well, most of you are unaware that there are ‘Pay and Park’ facilities at Reliance

Trends, Marks and Spencer and next to Elco restaurant at Hill Road. You can pay a minimal amount, park your vehicles and shop around anywhere at Hill Road. Reliance Trends Manager said, “We have an underground parking space for almost 30-40 cars & 10-15 bikes. Customers can pay and park and shop at any place at Hill Road. We are trying to avoid congestion as there is a lot of crowd at Hill Road.” Ronald Rodrigues Contd. on Page 9 >>

Volunteers educate masses about Animal Cruelty at Carter Road On Sunday (20th March) evening, seven major cities across India witnessed a synchronized nation-wide event, aimed at drawing attention to the world’s most forgotten victims - the non-human animals who suffer because of the everyday choices we make. Since March is a month marked for women’s issues, the volunteers highlighted that the mind-set that drives our needless torture of animals is no different from the ones that hurt women and other oppressed groups. Through speak-outs, videos and placards, they also stressed on the fact that non-human females also suffer unspeakable atrocities, ranging from being sexually abused as breeding machines to heart-breaking separation from their babies. Participating cities included Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jammu, Mumbaiand Pune. In Mumbai, the event took place at Carter Road, Bandra. The Mumbai volunteers also conducted an interactive demonstration 'Brave the crate', a tip-of-the-iceberg experience to help people realize the immense misery that egg-laying hens undergo, by focusing on one of the many ways in which they suffer. Fundamentally, sexism (discrimination on the basis of gender), speciesism (discrimination on the basis of species) and all other discriminations have a morally irrelevant and unjustifiable basis. For our ethical obligation of not causing avoidable suffering, it doesn’t matter which gender, caste, race or species one belongs to. What matters is whether one can suffer. And, non-human animals suffer intensely - both physically and emotionally - when they are “used” for food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation, labour, etc. From unequal opportunities to domestic violence to sexual abuse, women have had to suffer from a variety of injustices and atrocities that are rooted in sexist, male dominated mind-sets. The victims of a similar mind-set of exploitation, speciesism, are the most defenceless of them all: nonhuman animals. While animals of both sexes suffer, the animal industry is almost entirely built on the abuse of the female reproductive system. The animals that we torment for our wants (including a lot of the marine animals) have to be bred into existence. For female animals, breeding means a relentless, body-breaking cycle of artificial insemination (which is sexual abuse) and separation from her babies without even being allowed to bond and do things that humans take for granted as fundamental rights. These experiences are emotionally brutal for the female members of any species. It’s hard to imagine a crying baby taken from his mother shortly after birth and have his throat slit. However, this is the fate of male calves born to cows in the dairy in-

dustry. It’s hard to imagine a mother and her new born child separated, never to see each other again. That’s the fate of all female non-human animals and their babies. Egg laying hens are confined in “battery cages” with no freedom of movement. Their beaks are cut using red hot blades soon after birth. The fate of male chicks? Day old chicks are ground up alive or suffocated to death in bags because they do not lay eggs or grow fast enough for meat. Animals used for experiments are separated from their natural habitats, and families, confined in tiny cages and subjected to stress, pain and suffering continuously. Peter Singer's ‘Animal Liberation’ includes the testimonies of many scientists and exexperimenters to show that a large number of these torturous experiments are redundant, unhelpful or carried out merely to keep the research grants flowing under the garb of “science”. The event urged people to join a global movement that scores of people in India have embraced. It means practising and promoting anti-sexism, anti-speciesism (veganism) and anti-oppression in general. Millions of vegans around the world testify to the fact that we can live healthily without meat, eggs, milk, honey, leather, wool, silk, fur and so on. Avoiding animal products and animal use is beneficial for human health and crucial for mitigating environmental devastation and world hunger. It takes an enormous amount of grains, water and other resources to raise the tens of billions of animals that we breed into existence. Plus, given the alternatives that exist today, being vegan does not mean giving up tasty food, comfortable clothing, enjoyable entertainment, etc.

lifelong slave, or to be tortured and killed for our avoidable wants. That’s the story of the tens of billions of land and marine animals that we yearly exploit for food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation, labour, etc. Had these victims been humans, we would’ve called this the worst genocide. Moreover, unlike atrocities perpetrated by vicious dictators, this one is being powered by well-meaning individuals like you and me!” Preethi Raghav (Entrepreneur) “I was raised non-vegetarian, but after watching "Earthlings" and other videos that brought out the animal suffering that our choices are responsible for, I went vegan right away. Apart from not eating meat, eggs, dairy products/milk and honey, being vegan also involves avoiding leather, wool, silk, fur, pearls, zoos, animal circuses, animal-tested products - basically all animal use except when it's truly necessary for survival. Animals want and deserve freedom just like us, so their use is nothing but abuse, both physically and emotionally." Mandar Kokamkar (Film Editor)

“As someone opposed to racism and sexism, I instantly realized that I must also stop practicing ‘speciesism’, which refers to the exploitation of innocents on the discriminatory basis that they are not human. Animals may not talk or reason like us, but the only thing that ethically matters is the capacity to suffer. So, it’s our duty to make choices that don’t make them suffer. For instance, I was a huge fan of dairy products and eggs all my life, but all I needed to quit them and replace them with their yummy plant-based alternatives was awareness." Pulkit Parikh (Software Engineer) “Apart from sparing animals a lifelong misery, living and advocating veganism is vital to our environmental sustainability and beneficial for human health. When we consume animal products, we also indirectly consume all the plants fed daily to the animals for their entire lifetimes! The UN reports that 50% of the world’s grains are fed to animals exploited for human wants!” Susmitha (Food blogger & restaurateur)

Prinz Medical commences 50 year milestone It was on 2nd April 1967, that historic day - 49 years ago; that Prinz Medical put up their board, opened their shutters, spread the WELCOME MAT (the first of many times) and waited, with big smiles and hopeful hearts for friends who would be their “first-day customers”. Slowly, yet steadily many of us, our parents, grand-parents, family or friends - trooped in with our doctor’s prescription and trooped out with our medicines and a cheery thought. Even today, Prinz Medical can proudly say, “We Serve with a Smile.” Co-Founder Lakhamsi Shah, was as humble as ever; when he told us, “Today, we naturally think back to the early days and review the long trail of 49 years during which we measured our success – not by the volume of our profits, but by the degree of satisfaction we gave to our dear customers. And at the start of our grand 50th year in Bandra, we reminisce with one specific intent: To re-dedicate ourselves to our principles and to our clients.” His son Jayantilal Shah added, “ Our exclusive range of cosmetics in the shop is attracting a lot of customers, as our young third generation family members take a lot of interest to promote them.” This is a happening medical shop – where customer satisfaction is ensured. Prinz Medical is situated bang opposite one of Bandra’s most famous landmark – Elco Arcade, and touches Hill Road, an extremely busy shopping area. They are the winner of the First Prize for “A Well Maintained Retail Chemist Shop”. For more info, please visit: bandrabuzz.com/prinzmedical.html Today, three family generations run the busi-

CAMPUS

A single mistake can ruin your child's career Exams are over in almost all schools across India, and students are awaiting their final results. Students of class 12 and their parents are clueless about the next step for their career. Most of the students and parents didn't even have sufficient information about the options available. Some parents force their children's into courses that they do not like and some have no choice but to opt for whatever course they get admission into. Parents should have a clear perspective about the strengths and weakness of their children. There is no point in forcing a child to study a subject they don't like or will not have a successful career in future. There are numerous scientific ways to find out the strengths and weaknesses in a student. Parents can avail a psychometric test or an aptitude test or may even go for a DMIA (Dermatoglyphics Multiple Intelligence Analysis) to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of their child. Students and parents should then explore options available within the country and abroad, choose the right course suitable for them. Searching and googling for information could be the start point. One can attend education fairs and attend sem-

inars. A convenient way could be visiting a career counselor or a study abroad consultants. Parents should be careful while availing education consulting services, as most of them provide limited information. Indian education system is yet to address nu-

merous problems for ages, hence studying abroad is fast becoming popular with aspiring students. According to Mr. Aslam Shaikh of Aliff Overseas, one of the pioneers in Study Abroad consulting, students from India are

making beeline to foreign universities. The figures are growing year on year, this has been possible due to favorable conditions and neglected Indian Education System. Students are even bagging 100% scholarship for their studies abroad. There are options to study medicine without CET or paying donation. MBA and Masters programs in Europe are equally popular with students. Mr. Shaikh ends with a note of caution, that every course may not be suitable for your children or may not help him become successful in future. Parents and students as well, need to carefully analyze and weight each available options before taking a decision. Aliff in Bandra provides comprehensive information and one stop solution for all study abroad need. Nolencia Dharmai’s Easter Eggs, Bunnies, Chickens and Rabbits have travelled as far as Dubai and even London

Easter Eggstravaganza The feast of Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ; besides, it the oldest and most important day in the church year. It is no wonder then that it is also the most widely celebrated day among Catholics around the world. While Easter is celebrated differently around the world, back in Band-ruh (as it’s pronounced here), the Easter bunny’s coming to town, hopping…err hoping to make it special for you and your family. We caught up with two Bandraites who could make your Easter eggstra special. For Nolencia Dharmai, Easter is the busiest part of the year. Besides taking care of her family, she is also working the line, preparing Easter goodies for the many orders she has received, not just from the neighbourhood, but her Easter eggs, bunnies, chickens and rabbits have travelled as far as Dubai and even London. Earlier it was just the marzipan eggs, but now she even prepares those gooey chocolate bunnies. The caramel rush with a tinge of whisky and the white Russian with a dash of vodka are on her list of orders, but the alltime favourite with her patrons is the rum fudge Easter egg. Also, this Easter, she has the new Irish cream egg which is a delight and has been well received. Over the years, Nolencia, who picked up the ropes from her grandmother, has mastered the art of making creative and delightful goodies not just for Easter, but also Christmas and other occasions, including cakes and bouquets for weddings. The Easter basket full of goodies: consisting of an assorted set of eggs, chickens and rabbits are a hit among her clientele who prefer to gift these to

family and friends. You can reach her on 9022281213 It’s not for nothing that Naomi Fernandes Aroma Bites is called so. Enter her outlet located on 30th Road, and you will encounter the enticing aromas of appetizing fare wafting through the air. With Easter just around the corner, Naomi is busy getting things in order to prepare the perfect Easter meal. The chocolate and marzipan Easter eggs filled with black cherry, and cinnamon jam and raisins are a must try. But it’s not just the Easter eggs and bunnies; her store is the right place to pick up not just a quick bite like the potato chops, which are the most sought after snack by the way, but also the mini-meals and salads, which are most of the time customized to suit your palate. For Easter, the duck moile, which is prepared by Naomi herself, the pork vindaloo and sorpotel – classic Easter delights, and the roast quail are all too yummy to miss. And her patrons who tell her ‘whatever you do, just don’t move shop from here,’ are testimony to the delectable food served here although it’s been less than a year since she set up. Her Easter hamper is another exclusive, consisting of some heavenly chocolates, sparkling wine, nutella and the Easter bunny. Naomi, who likes to describe her homely shop as heaven-send, is enjoying every bit of it and she says that you really need to visit her shop to know what her regular patrons mean when they say: don’t move shop from here. She signs off wishing all Bandraites a joyful and egg-ceptional Easter! You can reach her on 9820372069 Valerian D'Costa

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF EASTER “Spring is in the air! Flowers and bunnies decorate the home. Father helps the children paint beautiful designs on eggs dyed in various colors, hidden and searched for later. The wonderful aroma of the hot cross buns mother is baking in the oven waft through the house. Forty days of abstaining from special foods will finally end the next day. The whole family picks out their Sunday best to wear to the next morning’s sunrise worship service to celebrate the savior’s resurrection and the renewal of life. Everyone looks forward to a sumptuous family lunch, at a table groaning under the under the weight of succulent food. After all, it is one of the most important religious holidays of the year.” Sounds like an excerpt from a children’s fiction novel, does it not? But this IS ‘Easter’ in a nutshell! Evidently, around the Christian observance of Easter, folk customs such as Easter eggs, Easter bunny, hot cross buns etc. have collected, many of which have been handed down from the ancient ceremonial symbolism of European and Middle Eastern pagan spring festivals. Strip away this flimsy façade and Easter reveals its true identity as the festival of new life or renewing life. Called to walk in the light of Christ, Christians have to guard against the darkness of sin and renew themselves constantly at the fountain of God’s mercy! Easter is a day that is honoured by nearly all of contemporary Christianity and is used to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, on the third day after his death on the cross. It is believed by those in the Faith that the very essence of Christianity is the Resurrection, when Jesus Christ rose from the dead, to live and reign in the hearts of believers! The word ‘Easter’ is derived from the Hebrew word, ‘Pesach’, meaning ‘passing over’. Passover is the reference to the event in ancient Hebrew society when the angel of death passed over the houses with doors marked by the blood of the sacrificial lamb, without striking the first-born child within. So ‘Pasch’ or Easter is the celebration of the spirit of life, of continual life, through the message that Jesus gives, “ Love one another as I have loved you!” In the light of Easter, the incidents of intolerance and violence around us pose a question to each one of us - Is the world bogged down by dogmas that need everyone else to believe what we do, that we miss the essence of continual life, renewal of life and the importance of being alive? Even if Easter has no place in one’s life, it is worth believing that the empty tomb has left us with hope for a new day of peace and fraternity….. Vera Alvares

St. Andrew's High School is all set to get Bandra's First Astro Turf ground. A tie up with Infinite Sports will soon have St. Andrew's High School grounds set a standard above the rest in football and hockey fields, the 'PlayGround' as it has been called, will be equipped with drainage, floodlights, changing rooms, washrooms, stands for spectators and dugouts for the teams, the turf used is imported from ACT Global a company based in the Netherlands, the in-

vestment in the projet is about 4 crores and recovery of the cost and maintenance of the grounds would come from renting them out for practices and tournaments. Bandra Buzz met with the Principal of St. Andrew's High School Rev. Fr. Magi Murzello to talk about this project, he said, "I noticed that the ground was not utilized much, in the past I was trying to get Astro Turf so the kids would have a chance but the deals were not falling through as the in-

vestment needed is very high, there were lots of negotiations and many wanted to put up advertisements etc., nothing was getting through, then at last, last year there were a few people really interested in sports that said they would invest but said that they too would have to recover the cost, understandable as the project costs about 4 crores. If you look Bandra has been the cradle of Olympians and Sportsmen, off late that

has not been so, we are trying is to bring back that past glory, now people can get to practice, I'm happy that it's coming up, what I had dreamt about 5 years back. There will be two pitches football (FIFA) and hockey (FIH), many of my boys will now get a chance to play."

LAWS ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN FOR SHARING AUTORICKSHAWS The large number of ‘sharing autorickshaws’ that one notices as soon as you leave Bandra Station have begun to create a menace on the streets of Bandra and also have raised a serious question on the law and order situation and the ever growing traffic. The ‘sharing rickshaws’ that ferry passengers to and fro from Bandra Station to various other locations of Bandra have left the citizens of Bandra and other motorists exposed to serious injury due to their rash and negligent driving. It is noted that these ‘sharing rickshawalas’ carry four passengers as against three passengers (maximum passengers in a rickshaw) that they are supposed to carry by law. It is also noted that they jump signals, ride rash and negligently and break all traffic norms to ferry passengers quickly from Bandra station to the last location they are scheduled to ride till (Carter Road, Mount Mary, Bandstand and Linking Road) and earn money per seat as against the meter. Their basic trick of trade is to ride

The notorious sharing autorickshawalas outside Bandra Railway Station quick from one location to another dropping passengers and gathering new passengers as quick as they can to earn money on

seat basis. A resident of Bandra who wouldn’t like to be named when contacted said, “these ‘sharing rickshawalas’ have created

an organization like a mafia or an organized crime syndicate and have lost all fear of the law of the region and established traffic norms as they fearlessly ride roughly and also break signals”. Some residents have alleged that these ‘sharing rickshaw drivers’ are very rude and also carry weapons such as iron rods in case they have an argument and it leads to a physical altercation with their passengers or any pedestrian or any motorist. Other residents of Bandra have expressed that buses are the best for all round development of transportation in the city and that the number of sharing rickshaws should be reduced as there is already a lot of population, pollution and traffic related problems in the city. They stated that ‘sharing rickshawalas’ should be given special licenses and only those that have been given such a license can offer seat -sharing services in their rickshaw. Adnan Mookhtiar

Hill Road tops Traffic Congestion Contd. from Page 1 >>

The state of Bandra’s most happening area Hill Road is not all that good as there is no specific space for parking for the thousands of customers that flush in each day. Moreover, there are not sufficient traffic policeman to manage the traffic and help in terms of a traffic jam as the ones stationed there are busy collecting fines. The population of both - people and cars - is increasing, and with that the purchasing power is increasing too.

This practice of parking anywhere at Hill Road leads to a lot of traffic jams as the road is uneven in breadth throughout the stretch and has vehicles moving continuously. To add to the turmoil, hawkers eat up the space on the road as they need to carry on their business too. Well, most of you are unaware that there are ‘Pay and Park’ facilities at Reliance Trends, Marks and Spencer and next to Elco restaurant at Hill Road. You can pay a minimal amount, park your vehicles and shop around anywhere at Hill Road. Manager of Reliance Trends said, “We have an underground parking space for almost 30-40 cars & 10-15 bikes. Customers can pay and park and shop at any place at Hill Road. We are trying to avoid congestion as there is a lot of crowd at Hill Road.” Deepak Bhagnani, owner of Elco, said, “We do not have our own parking space at Elco but we use the space besides Elco for customers to park around 20 cars and 10 bikes. Sometimes, Hill Road is so crowded that our customers need to park near Almeida Park or near Bhabha Hospital and then come and eat at our restaurant. Traffic needs to be well maintained. ” Well, apart from the peak shopping hours & weekends, Hill road seems a bit spacious now as the BMC have taken some measures to clear hawkers & illegal encroachments by shopkeepers at Hill Road. Regular hawkers at Hill Road cried out the same plea, “We hawkers are also doing business. Selling shopping stuff on the road is our only bread & butter for we don’t have the money to buy shops or galas. The government should understand our state too and provide us with a space or a hawking zone kind of remedy.” And that’s true, for though hawkers create congestion; they are the ones that attract so much of crowd

D.N. Prabhupatkar (Head Constable) checks on illegal hawkers and parking “One ways are treated as two ways. The dividers are broken at places so people just cross their vehicles anyhow. Customers park and leave their cars anywhere for hours together causing inconvenience to others. There is no autorickshaw or taxi stand for commuters. Barricades should be installed so that people can’t park anywhere while, there should be no gaps in the divider; those who want to turn should take a U-turn so that mid way accidents are avoided. Hawkers and shopkeepers should be allowed to do their business but not encroach the main road & create inconvenience.” D.N. Prabhupatkar - Head Constable to this exotic area at Bandra. Most of the people buy quirky stuff from these hawkers and come to Hill Road just because of these hawkers and the kind of authentic stuff that they sell at reasonable prices. A veteran shopkeeper, on behalf of the shopkeepers at Hill Road, explains, “Hawkers do not hamper our business at all. We are veteran shopkeepers and we are law

Double parking of vehicles adds to the existing traffic woes of Hill Road

abiding citizens. The BMC or the government should inform us before destroying our encroachments or inadequate use of space and we will definitely cooperate with them. Hill Road is a busy shopping area in a developing nation like India where the population is massive. There will be crowd, there will be congestion but allowing parking space and managing traffic will help reduce chaos.”

D. N. Prabhupatkar has successfully helped improve the conditions at Hill Road exclaimed, “One ways are treated as two ways at Hill Road. The dividers are broken at places so people just cross their vehicles anyhow. Customers park and leave their cars anywhere for hours together causing inconvenience to others. There is no autorickshaw or taxi stand for commuters. Barricades should be installed so that people can’t park anywhere while, there should be no gaps in the divider; those who want to turn should take an entire U-turn so that mid way accidents are avoided. Hawkers and shopkeepers should be allowed to do their business but not encroach the main road and create inconvenience. Most importantly, individual should think for himself about others. He/she should always ask themselves - Am I causing inconvenience to others? Only then things will improve and change for good at Hill Road.” A lot of shopping, a lot of food, too many cars with too many people and a lot of traffic is what can be seen at Hill Road. If only we think at the individual level and act wisely then all this might reduce. Let the government and officials do what they can, till then we as citizens of Bandra and India largely, let’s strive to make Hill Road a more spacious and better place where one can breathe, walk and shop freely! Besides, after every ritual the natural refreshment constituting of Spa Ceylon’s own herbal tea, fruit pickle, specially imported palm jaggery, and the lemongrass water warm towel to clean your face refreshes you to the core. You are bound to feel fresh after this wholesome service. Being a well established brand since 2009, Spa Ceylon has over 35 outlets in 11 countries. The origins of the brand are from Sri Lanka with around 20 centres in the island country. Sanjeev says, “We have ambitious plans for expansion and would be opening spa & boutiques in several cities soon. We are the only brand in this space who offers treatments and products. We don’t compromise on the quality or delivery of our products or services.” The prices of Spa Ceylon’s rituals are also great value for money – since they use their own premium products in the treatments and not any oil or lotion which the other brands use. You go once and the products will draw you again for nature has its own law of attraction. The outlet on Linking Road is open on all days, from 10.30am to 9.30pm. BANDRA BUZZ

Tête-à-tête with Actorpreneur Sai Gundewar When it comes to talent, the Queen of the Suburbs is nothing short of it. In fact, Bandra is full of it – right from sportspersons to actors to business tycoons. We decided to meet one such talented personality - Sai Gundewar. An actor, model, voiceover artist & entrepreneur, Sai shot to fame in 2010 after his participation in the hit TV show MTV Splitsvilla. He is also recognised for his participation in Survivor, the Indian franchise of the American hit reality TV show. He has also been a part of numerous TVCs and a fair few films in Bollywood. Here are a few excerpts from the tête-àtête: Talk to us about your childhood I moved to Bandra when I was around 9 years old & studied at St. Aloysius School. Prior to that, I lived in Andheri & loved it there & it took a while for me to get settled here because I had all of my friends & family there. My parents wanted to admit me to St. Stanislaus, but I couldn’t be in a boys-only school & convinced my parents to get into a co-ed school. Haha. I enjoyed taking part in elocution, drama and dance competitions. I went to R.D. National College & during my time there, I participated in various dance competitions for a number of college fests & thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

short term acting workshops in L.A. That was one of the best and most memorable times of my life. I was living in one of the biggest film industries in the world; Hollywood. The feeling was surreal and I loved every bit of it. Sadly it wasn’t long before I had to return back to Australia as I couldn’t obtain a green card or a work visa. I used up most of my savings and maxed out all my credit cards… haha. But I had gained a lot of experience, knowledge and wisdom, which gave me the confidence and impetus to try my luck in Mumbai (Bollywood) and that’s when I moved back in the year 2007 to pursue my dream.

You’ve been to Australia, and then the What’s your latest movie called? U.S. . . . was Indian, and hence I could take up roles of various ethnicities and same was the case in L.A. too. In India, at times I don’t get picked for being a Maharashtrian and when people hear me speak chaste Marathi, they are flabbergasted. (Laughs). To be taken seriously by the industry people, I had to lose my Aussie twang and speak English in a neutral accent, which I have managed to do over the years. I reckon, my fit and athletic physique also adds another dimension to my personality and that’s a huge plus. When you’re not in front of the camera you are. . . I love to read spiritual, motivational and inspirational books. I also practice yoga, meditation, mixed-martial arts. I love spending time with my family & friends. Besides, my wife and I also watch a lot of American TV shows & movies as and when time permits. Tell us about your fitness regime I do weight training, calisthenics and functional training four times a week. Mixed Martial Arts also forms a major part of my training sessions, which is about thrice a week. I also take good care of my nutrition, & I am quite disciplined when it comes to my meals. Although, sometimes I let my hair down (not literally) & go all out... ha-ha. What would you say is your ultimate goal in life? My ultimate goal in life is to be the best version of myself. I always aspire to be successful and happy in everything that I do. If I manage to be a successful son, husband, father, friend, actor, entrepreneur while consistently giving back to the society in some way, shape or form, I would have achieved my goal. For me success is doing what you want to do, when you want to do it and doing it effortlessly. That’s my ultimate goal. As an actor, I know I’m going to get noticed, and if I’m going to get noticed, it’d better be for the right reasons; I believe in the adage live and let live. Do you have a word for aspiring actors? Be realistic about your expectations. Know what you can and can’t do. You know yourself best. Keep learning and upskilling yourself. There will be those who are going to tell you that you can’t do this or that, but you don’t have to believe what the world says. You should believe in yourself and believe in God. How has Bandra changed since your childhood? Bandra has transformed over the years. It has become a melting pot of various cultures & ethnicities and that’s what makes it so interesting and diverse. It is like an international town within Mumbai. I found my wife in Bandra. Haha. I don’t have to go too far if I want to eat out or party or even do a little shopping; I have plenty of choices. It is also very central. The people around here are more open and the lifestyle here in Bandra is really very close to that back in Australia. If Australia is my second home, Bandra is my first. I am a quintessential Bandra boy and proud to be one. Valerian D'Costa

Letters to the Editor REGULATE ILLEGAL CELL TOWERS Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) decision to not allow any mobile towers in gardens, open spaces, playgrounds, reserved plots or layouts is welcome. This important clause has been added in new mobile tower policy which will be presented in Improvement Committee of the BMC this week. BMC has also decided to regularize all the illegal mobile towers if the company complies to the civic norms. This will help the BMC to collect additional revenue which was otherwise not collected. As per report no new permissions will be given for the towers in RG-PG, open space, gardens, reserved plots and layouts. The illegal mobile towers wil face the action. Those mobile towers which will fall in the new policy and will comply the norms will be regulated & will be charged rent as per the revised rates. Civic body had initiated action against more than 3,800 illegal mobile towers in the city. There was strong opposition from residents and civic activist against the installation of mobile towers for hazards of radiations emitted from the mobile towers. While on one hand citizens need good and advanced cellphone network on other hand they are also worried about the hazardous radiation emissions from the mobile towers. With the 4G network being offered by mobile companies, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the companies to provide good network in absence of good infrastructure for installing mobile towers. New policy will allow the BMC to charge rent from the mobile companies and also charge fees for regulating illegal mobile towers. Regulations of illegal mobile towers and the new policy will fetch BMC additional revenue which would run in crores, but it must be ensure that the citizens should not suffer. Bhagwan Thadani MANDATORY AADHAR CARD The latest stealth (illegal) move by the current Indian government, is to demand citizens have an Aadhar card for such regular things as buying cooking gas to demanding information under the Right to Information (RTI) act. This shows how the current government would like to turn India from a liberal democracy into a closely monitored police state, the government is slowly using stealth means to make the Aadhar card mandatory for all citizens. And oddly enough, the Aadhar card by itself is illegal, as Parliament has refused to pass a bill that was aimed to legalize the Aadhar card. Besides there’s no clue where all that bio-metric data that the government plans on collecting may land up, it would be important to note that a CIA front company is collecting the data. Wayne Lemos

MANDATORY AADHAR CARD The hasty manner in which the Aadhaar Bill was passed in Lok Sabha by the Narendra Modi government throws up many issues, prime among them being the subject of privacy and the threat of citizens coming under surveillance. The categorization of the bill in the form of a Money Bill is undemocratic. Article 110 (3) “If any question arises whether a Bill is a Money Bill or not, the decision of the Speaker of the House of the People thereon shall be final” is an unethical way for the government to deal with the problem of numbers in the Rajya Sabha. It was only recently that the Prime Minister assured the House that the government would seek the guidance of leaders in the opposition. Now, by categorizing the Aadhaar Bill as a Money Bill, the government has contradicted itself on this point and betray faith of the house. Ahmed Shaikh STERN ACTION AGAINST WATER WASTAGE ON HOLI With shortfall in rain and water scarcity at 17% deficit and many areas in dry position the civic body corporation of Mumbai must take legal action against the citizens for wasting precious water during the forthcoming Holi festival. It has been observed that every year several housing societies and clubs waste water liberally in the name of "rain dance" & make a big tamasha in the name of festival which day by day becoming vulgar where many of the girls have been molested by applying colors. Since city of Mumbai is facing water shortage the BMC must take very strong action against those who organized rain dance in their societies and the clubs and put the residents under hardship for lack of supply of water. It is high time the citizens must understand the value of the precious water and celebrate Holi festival on very simple manner by applying only 'Gulal' and avoid use of water during the rain dance and Holi festival which is nothing but waste of time and money. MARCH 2016 13

COPING WITH CHANGE Dear Reader, This year, Spring’s Festive Season: Holi & Easter is at the fag end of March – very near to the 2015 -2016 financial year-end. This is the time when ‘sticks & carrots’ are prominently in the news – getting rave reactions from those who are affected by the budget. The ‘Budget Jokes and Gossip’ you hear from friendly groups at Bandra’s parks and promenades are heated, yet hilarious. Yet, life will cope with everything. Perhaps, Bandraites are adept to coping with change – more than others. This could be because of Bandra being a ‘Mini-India’ – or, to take this a step further; a prime global suburb. With her multi-ethnic and expat population, local people interact with all types of people; thereby getting practical exposure to the culture of distant lands. This enriches our lives – taking it to a different level. Now, with the recent change in local government, a lot of change is happening – some good and some not so good. We have learned our lessons and will not repeat our mistakes.
