The wonderful aroma of the hot cross buns mother is baking in the oven waft through the house. Forty days of abstaining from special foods will finally end the next day. The whole family picks out their Sunday best to wear to the next morning’s sunrise worship service to celebrate the savior’s resurrection & the renewal of life. Everyone looks forward to a sumptuous family lunch, at a table groaning under the under the weight of succulent food. After all, it is one of the most important religious
holidays of the year.” Sounds like an excerpt from a children’s fiction novel, does it not? But this is ‘Easter’ in a nutshell! Evidently, around the Christian observance of Easter, folk customs such as Easter eggs, Easter bunny, etc. have collected, many of which have been handed down from the ancient ceremonial symbolism of European & Middle Eastern pagan spring festivals. Strip away this flimsy façade & Easter reveals its true identity as the festival of new life or renewing life. Called to walk in the light of Christ, Christians have to guard against the darkness of sin & renew themselves constantly Easter is a day that is honoured by nearly all of contemporary Christianity & is at the fountain of God’s mercy! used to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, on the third day after his death on the cross. It is believed by those in the Faith that the very essence of Christianity is the Resurrection, when Jesus Christ rose from the dead, to live & reign in the hearts of believers! The word ‘Easter’ is derived from the Hebrew word, ‘Pesach’, meaning ‘passing over’. Passover is the reference to the event in ancient Hebrew society when the angel of death passed over the houses with doors marked by the blood of the sacrificial lamb, without striking the first-born child with-
in. So ‘Pasch’ or Easter is the celebration of the spirit of life, of continual life, through the message that Jesus gives, “Love one another as I have loved you!” In the light of Easter, the incidents of intolerance & violence around us pose a question to each one of us - Is the world bogged down by dogmas that need everyone else to believe what we do, that we miss the essence of continual life, renewal of life & the importance of being alive? Even if Easter has no place in one’s life, it is worth believing that the empty tomb has left us with hope for a new day of peace & fraternity. Vera Alvares

Prime Parking Space for Vehicles at Hill Road
If you care to stop by Hill Road & have a set of wheels that require a guaranteed place to park, you can do worse than using the recently opened Public Parking Lot (PPL) in Trios at Hill Road. The BMC has constructed a four-storey PPL, that is open at all hours, as a solution to unruly parking and decongest the perennially crowded Hill Road teeming with shoppers and hawkers. The parking lot was inaugurated on February 15 & has 93 slots for four-wheelers. It can also shelter two-wheelers & includes handicapped accessible spaces. In conjunction with opening the new parking lot, the traffic division has also declared the surrounding area as No Parking Zone. “If you park your car within 500 meters of an operational PPL, you are liable to pay four-times the parking fee amount. This is inspected and charged by the parking lot’s contractor as maintaining the PPL
is an expensive affair,” said Sharad Ovhal, inspector at the Bandra traffic division. The current parking charges at the PPL for a four-wheeler is Rs 30 per hour while a two-wheeler costs Rs 10 per hour. On the contrary, street parking will cost Rs 120 per hour for cars and Rs 40 per hour for bikes. “Since this is a public pay-and-park area, the deck is available to all; including residents of Hill Road,” added Ovhal. The four-storey parking area has two elevated floors – P1, P2 and two underground floors – B1, B2. The transit system includes four elevators that help transport vehicles to the desired floor. The underground floor (B1) is also equipped with a car-wash facility. Anil Kamble, the official in charge of the PPL said, “Motorists are either not aware of the parking lot or are reluctant to park their vehicles inside it as they are habituated to parking them on the street.” Another
official added, “On weekends there are 40 to 45 cars parked while on weekdays only four to five cars are parked at the PPL. Will the new parking lot unclog Mumbai’s shopping hub? “The fine for a towed vehicle is Rs 672. However, according to the new rules, vehicles cannot be towed if someone is sitting inside it. This nullifies the effort of setting up a PPL as motorists have their drivers or family members waiting in the car,” said Inspector Ovhal. In addition to the parking lot at Hill Road, 13 more pay-and-park slots in Bandra and Khar are in the pipeline. Dimensions Bandra Chapter Launched The long-awaited dawn gave way on March 17th 2018 over the Bandra horizon, as Dimensions launched yet another chapter, this one in the ‘Queen of Suburbs’.

Breathing Life into the Mangroves Five years ago, when Rehan Merchant, a web designer by profession, began his work on the mangroves at Carter Road, people passing by or jogging on the promenade were sceptical about what he was doing. A man with a vision and determined to prove his point, nothing hindered Rehan’s effort and he continued to work with vigour. Now, the results lie in front of everyone, his persistence has paid off and through it, the mangroves are slowly turning over a new leaf. Mangroves consist of halophytes, which are plants and trees that are highly salt-tolerant and can grow in an acidic environment with high salt content. Found along the Mumbai coastline, Carter Road is home to these mangroves. Mangroves consume a large amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus, helping to maintain the climate and reduce pollution levels. There are three types of mangroves: red mangroves, black mangroves & white
mangroves, named after the colour of their wood; all of which are found at Carter Road. The soil in mangroves consists of clay, silt or particles of rocks, sand and tiny particles of shells. They’re home to crabs, birds, bats, oysters, shells, sea vegetables and various types of algae and environmental bacteria and organisms. If you happen to walk on the promenade at Carter Road & notice a man with a handcart, near the mangroves, you’ve come across Rehan Merchant. He has put up a few signs, as a brief note to the public, about what he’s doing and how it’s worked. You might notice a lot of plastic bags or garbage and assume that waste was the problem. The truth is, Rehan never had a problem with the garbage & it was the least of his concerns. What do you want to be when you are 17? In January last year, when we asked 16 year old Jemimah Rodrigues this question, she said it would be to break into the senior Indian cricket team. At 17 years and 129 days, this Bandra girl has had her dream come true! Last week, Jemimah was called to join the 16-member Indian squad on its tour to South Africa, where they will play 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is as a part of the ICC Women’s Championship. But for Jemimah the feeling still hasn’t sunk in, “Maybe when I get out with the team for the first game will I experience the real feeling.” Recently, in November last year, she became the youngest and only the second Indian woman player to score a double century, playing for Mumbai in the U19 inter-state tournament. But her consistent performances in the senior Women’s Chal-
lenger Trophy earlier this month sealed the deal for her. It was for the third time in three years that Jemimah was playing at the senior Challenger Trophy and she was looking forward to making her presence felt this time around. She grabbed the opportunity with both hands and stamped her mark finishing the tournament as the third highest run-getter and only behind seasoned campaigners, now Indian teammates, Punam Raut & Smriti Mandhana. Introduced to the game by her elder brothers, Enoch and Eli, at the age of 4, when most girls were figuring out whether they liked a pink or blue coloured dress, Jemimah has come a long way since. But her talent was discovered only by chance; when she was invited to attend the selections for the summer camp of the Mumbai girls’ team when at a training session her

Three 4G towers illegally installed by Raj Kaushal were demolished by the efforts of Allan Dominic Pereira along with the BMC and political authorities at Sherly village on November 5, 2015. The whole Shirley gaothan signed a campaign against these towers as they were harmful to their health and illegal. Allan Pereira, 60 years old, took the initiative of noticing, informing and single handedly conducting a signature campaign to fight against this menace. This was pro-active activism at its best. On November 2, 2015 Allan no-
ticed these three Reliance Jio 4G towers on the terrace of Rama 2 building which is just next to his residence at Sherly gaothan, Bandra West. Unaware of the ill effects of these metal towers, Allan was happy that these towers would improve the internet connectivity of their village and provide the youth mainly with faster 4G internet. It dawned only when his friends enlightened him that these towers were harmful to their health; the radiations from these towers were cancer causing, would lead to disruption of eyesight in the long run
and affect the senior citizens by various cardiac health hazards. Then, along with his friend Wilbert D’Silva, Allan immediately informed Stephen Noronha, the Congress President of Block 40. Stephen then brought this to the notice of Asif Zakaria, Municipal Corporator of that area. Immediate action was taken by Asif & Stephen as a letter was filed to the BMC ward officer Tawde and Allan was then guided to conduct a signature campaign against these towers. NEWS On 8th March 2018 MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar raised issue on redevelopment of gaothans, kolivadas & adivasi padas in the Assembly. He highlighted grievances of people living in those areas, in densely congested localities with narrow roads built during British rule. It is a shame that after 72 years of Independence & six decades after the State was born, people living in these localities have no window open to voice grievances with Civic Corporation. Yes there are umpteen problems in the context but there is no political or even administrative initiative by the governments to enter into some kind of plan to eradicate this nonsensical stature of having to live in the past. Shelar points out that a white paper was introduced in the Assembly in 2011, but to this date neither the present or the past governments have bothered to take the initiative to look into the gigantic problems faced by the residents of these localities. After the Ruling Party has come into power, the focus is only on elections hand in glove with the media to divert the attention of the public from real & meaningful issues of governance. Shelar mentioned about how the people in gaothan, kolivadas & advasi padas are facing hardships with lack of resources for water supply, sanitation & housing repairs because of narrow spaces around each surroundings that curbs movement. Bandra's iconic photographer Ivan Pereira passes away Ivan Pereira from 25, Waroda Road was centre-stage; as the default photographer for all major events in & around St. Stanislaus High School, since at least two generations can remember. His simplistic demeanor & quips made him the favorite choice in the recent past – with perfect pictures to match. On 20th February 2018, his earthly journey ended. Some of the local reactions, on hearing of his death, said: K. Khan, “R.I.P. Ivan, He's the guy who always clicked our class photo's, 1st to 10th. How can I forget him?”

Carmel’s - Jason Bandrawala summed it up beautifully, “Cannot think of Bandra without Ivan.” His close friend, Fabian Namory delivered the eulogy at the funeral service. Horrendous noise emitted by autorickshaws What strikes me as astonishing is the complete absence of any complaint from anybody about the horrendous noise emitted by autorickshaws. Has nobody living in the suburbs of Mumbai noticed that about 80 percent of the autorickshaws on the road are emitting a much higher engine noise level now than they used to? In fact the decibel level is well over double the legally permissible level. This is because the rickshaw owners have discovered that by cropping the exhaust pipes of the rickshaws they can eliminate, or drastically reduce the necessity of burning off frequently the oily residue that rapidly builds up & chokes the exhaust pipe. This burning off process costs them money as well as earning time. They of course do not give a whit that by shortening the exhaust pipe they produce more noise than the public can tolerate. For people living along the main roads, such as Turner – Perry Road, Hill Road, etc. it is nearly impossible even to carry on a sensible conversation above the noise level. It is a proven fact that excessive noise levels can affect the health of the persons exposed to high noise levels for long periods; & we have been exposed to this maddening noise level day in, day out, from
the wee hours of the morning till late into the night. This is certainly having a serious deleterious effect on the mental & physical health of the populace in the suburbs. Particularly badly affected are the senior citizens & small children. Stress, inability to sleep, irritability, neurosis, cardiac problems, etc., as also more serious illeffects of continuous, high levels of noise are medically established consequences. Rickshaws with 2-stroke engines have always been heavy air & noise polluters & should have been banned long ago, which they have been – in the island city of Mumbai. The suburbs? Heck, who cares? All the
important people live in south Mumbai anyway. And yet, in the current uproar of demands by the rickshaw owners & drivers to increase fares, & the equally strident complaints of rickshaw users regarding non-availability of rickshaws and/or their refusal to accept passengers for short runs, nobody has brought up the subject of extreme noise pollution artificially created by the majority of rickshaws. This issue MUST be addressed urgently for the good health of the public at large (in the suburbs). This subject is quite apart from the other illegalities committed by rickshaws.
At least a good 40 percent of them display no lights even when it is very dark. They merrily race up One Way Streets, as also through red lights, with no care for anybody’s safety. They stop suddenly in the middle of the road, or make ‘U’ turns or turn offs without signaling. But they demand an increase in fares. What do their union leaders have to say about all this? Nothing. So even if it is impractical to expect imposition of a law banning all rickshaws, because of a lack of political will, or on grounds of humanity, or convenience of the public, or whatever, the least that can be done is to enforce an upper limit to noise emission & air pollution. Those who do not toe the line should be fined at a level that hurts & repeat offenders should be delicensed & taken off the roads. The long suffering public must make their Corporators & MLA’s take up this issue urgently before everyone ends up in the madhouse because of the incessant noise they are subjected to from early morning to late into the night. No civilized country can tolerate the terrible noise & pollution created by these monster vehicles. Shyama Kulkarni

Tell us about your career? As a song writer or lyricist I’ve I have written nearly 15 albums, my most famous one being Ho Gayi Hai Mohabbat - by Aslam Shibani. As a singer I did an album called Honey Honey featuring Salman Khan. I have written for films like Rakta Charitra, Valentine’s Day I sang three songs for Satish Kaushik’s film Gang of Ghosts. Could you tell us about your journey I came to Mumbai in 1995. My dear friend Rachna Shah who is Lata didi’s niece took my CD & gave for auditions of Meri Awaz Suno. I went on to win the finals & was in the mega finals. Asha Tai took me under her wing & trained me for this reality show. Didi sent me to HMV for them to try me out as a songwriter since she liked my style of writing & composing. They gave me the Aslam album to do & the rest is history as they say. Ho Gayi Hai Mohabbat went to become a cult romantic song that innumerable people have used to propose to their girl/boyfriends. & career with equal zeal. She changes into different roles to suit the occasion at a drop of a hat. Rightly said by Harriet Beecher
When I started getting typed as a lyricist I started focusing on my singing & Honey Honey happened. That turned out to be a super duper hit song & still is everyone’s favourite. I did one more video in that album with Sanjay Dutt & Sunil Shetty called ‘Taqqdeer’ in that song which was written & composed by me I play myself (a fortune teller!!) I started performing a lot after that album & still do. I have a band now & we have released a song called ‘Allah Bachaye’ through Zee Music & one called ‘Baalmaa Blues’ (which is a thumri sung in the blues style!!). People started asking me to teach them music so I also conduct music classes as per people’s convenience, though my first love is writing songs & singing. What about competition? To be honest I’ve never cared for competition or the rat race. I am my biggest competition. And I believe me one always gets that which is in their destiny. Mehnat karo - phal ki chinta nah karo. Due to the high altitude of Zero Point, oxygen in the air is low and there can be breathing problems for few. To proceed beyond to the Nathu La pass you would require a special permit, which can easily be procured the previous day.

LET’S MARCH FORWARD… Dear Reader, In our country’s current scenario, it takes courage to march forward. There’s tension at every level – a build up to the 2019 elections. Yet, Bandraites are seen marching forward in several spheres of their life. The impeding heat of summer is overcome with the grit and determination to succeed. Luckily, our proximity to the cool morning & evening breeze at our promenades, overlooking the Arabian Sea – provides scope for some refreshing fresh air. It is a restless feeling. Should honest citizens keep quiet and go with the flow? – or should we stick our necks out and fight for our rights? With corruption embedded in our governing system for decades, cleaning it up will be a herculean task. Budget 2018 implies more transparency. However, the masses need to be educated, as to how all can benefit, when core compliances are followed. The million-dollar question here is – how much of our hard-earned money, paid as taxes; is going to be spent on projects that will never benefit the common man? Beautifying Bandra seems to be the local mantra. Hill Road seems wider. Linking Road, Bandra Railway Station and Pali Market are being regularly cleared of hawkers (although they return soon). Junctions are getting face-lifts – with many more signals
added, for smoother traffic flow. Footpaths are improved. Road surfaces are better. Drains are being upgraded. These actions are due to the constant efforts of our local represented – and we need to be thankful, that they are fulfilling their duties. Letters to the Editor PRO-ACTIVE ACTIVIST ANIL JOSEPH In the wee hours of the morning in the month of March; the JCB ripped off the water pipe line from the road to Joseph's corner on Perry road. It also damaged the telephone lines of the buildings in the area, resulting is a number of lines becoming 'dead'. Though the heat is on & water is precious, the road contractor was not concerned about the wastage. We did not have the municipal water supply for the day. It was due to activist Anil Joseph's pro-active intervention & our continuous follow up with the contractor, that he paid heed & started working on the job at 3pm. He completed the same at 6.30 pm. We express our gratefulness to Anil Joseph for helping us & the people of Perry road on a number of occasions. Jean Dias BMC WASTING OUR TAXES While the BMC surely knew that the shops opposite Bandra Medical, Hill Road would be going for re-development and set-back,
why did they have to get a new footpath done - only to break it again? Are authorities concerned, really concerned? This proves that there is absolutely no BMC co-ordination, thereby wasting funds, got from taxes paid from citizen's hard-earned money. And then, they want to hike rates. Senior citizens and children are exposed to health hazards due to unscrupulous unplanned, illegal construction activities The civic infrastructure is on the verge of collapse & needs urgent attention.
