St. Andrew's set for its first Astro turf - ‘The PlayGround’

St. Andrew's High School is all set to get Bandra's First Astro Turf ground. A tie up with Infinite Sports will soon have St. Andrew's High School grounds set a standard above the rest in football and hockey fields, the 'PlayGround' as it has been called, will be equipped with drainage, floodlights, changing rooms, washrooms, stands for spectators and dugouts for the teams, the turf used is imported from ACT Global a company based in the Netherlands, the in-

vestment in the projet is about 4 crores and recovery of the cost and maintenance of the grounds would come from renting them out for practices and tournaments. Bandra Buzz met with the Principal of St. Andrew's High School Rev. Fr. Magi Murzello to talk about this project, he said, "I noticed that the ground was not utilized much, in the past I was trying to get Astro Turf so the kids would have a chance but the deals were not falling through as the in-

vestment needed is very high, there were lots of negotiations and many wanted to put up advertisements etc., nothing was getting through, then at last, last year there were a few people really interested in sports that said they would invest but said that they too would have to recover the cost, understandable as the project costs about 4 crores. If you look Bandra has been the cradle of Olympians and Sportsmen, off late that

has not been so, we are trying is to bring back that past glory, now people can get to practice, I'm happy that it's coming up, what I had dreamt about 5 years back. There will be two pitches football (FIFA) and hockey (FIH), many of my boys will now get a chance to play."

KIDS OF ST. CATHERINE HOME EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF STREET WALL PAINTING

Art is the best form of expression. And, art has no boundaries; it can be anything and everything. You can paint the whole world on a single canvas…So did the children of St. Catherine’s Home, an orphanage at Bandra, as they expressed themselves, their thoughts and feelings with colours, drawings & paintings on the walls of the home. It reminded me of a scene from the film ‘Taare Zameen Par’ where the kids sit together and paint with no restrictions…For something similar occurred at St. Catherine’s Home as the kids followed the basic funda - ‘Paint anything that you like, anything that you feel; for the drawing that you create on the outside is not important but the joy that you experience within while painting is!’ The immense happiness that you get while doing something from your heart and placing your thoughts on a wall in the form of a painting is way beyond, just out of the world. On the dawn of March 5, 2016 all the kids from St. Catherine home set out to paint the wall of the home with whatever they wanted. They painted the whole day and went on to paint the next day too. Volunteers and other helping hands too joined in to fill the walls with colour and graffiti.

There was Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Bruce Lee, Bruno Mars, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and many more figures painted with colourful strokes. Slogans, social messages, poems and intruding thoughts were written all over the walls of the home to create awareness and spread a social message in a creative way. A huge painting of Amitabh Bachchan from his film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ stole the show of the entire street painting art and stood out to claim the presence of Bollywood in the city of Mumbai. It was created by the famous artist, Ranjit Dahiya, who has painted various Bollywood figures and instances at several streets and walls of Bandra as part of his ‘Bollywood Art Project’. Ranjit says, “I have been painting Bollywood celebrities and scenarios across the city so that as soon as people step in Mumbai they come to know that Mumbai is a Bollywood city.” Ranjit has been an artist for over 18 years and happily agreed to help these little kids of the home to paint and express themselves. He says, “I just wanted them to have fun and enjoy. Anybody can paint; it is just expressing your thoughts.” Well, the idea of organising a non-profit street wall painting event was the brain-

child of two young minds of Bandra - Zoya and Pradnya who have begun their own startup company called ‘The Petite Project’. All that they want to do is host events in a unique way and use the profits for charitable and fun loving events like these. Pradnya said, “We used the profit that we gained from our last event to organise this small initiative for the kids. We just wanted to help in a different way and thought of this event so that the kids could enjoy and paint.” Zoya added, “We just wanted the kids to have fun and paint whatever they feel. Ranjit and the other volunteers would guide the kids on how to make their painting more creative. So, the kids did something different from their daily schedule at the home and we had sponsors coming in providing food, paints, and other contributions.” Satish, a student of the home painted Bob Marley with the help of his friend, said, “I was happy when I got the news that we are having a painting event in our home and we could paint anything that we like. I love Bob Marley and his songs therefore I painted his face.” Ravi, another student from the home,

who is a professional Capoeira trainer, said, “I am glad that something creative has happened in the home. For at the home we have all kinds of sports but we need such creative events to showcase our potential.” Brother Joseph who takes of the kids at the home expressed, “This art painting event helped the kids to try out something different for in the home the kids usually draw and paint on paper. But, street wall painting provided them a large canvas to paint their feelings on. Around 40-50 students actively participated in the art painting and learned a lot from the artists and volunteers. Such beautiful opportunities to express themselves should be made available to kids everywhere.” If you go and just have a walk around St. Catherine’s Home, near Mount Mary, you will be baffled and awestruck to witness the phenomenal street paintings done by the kids of the orphanage. The paintings truly stand out as real figures and convey the talent, feelings, anxiety and potential of these blessed children. It is rightly said that ‘Talent lies in the ones who are always away from the limelight, who are special yet neglected’. Ronald Rodrigues

St. Joseph's and St. Stanislaus together decided to add IGCSE curriculum and they plan to start next year, unlike the other schools that will be starting from Junior KG, Stanislaus will be starting from std 8th, called 'Checkpoint Year' as you can come in from SSC, CBSE, ICSE or even a prior IGCSE platform & enter into the std 8th and at the end of the year you give what is called 'Checkpoint Exam' in English, Maths & Science, the papers for the came would come from Cambridge, and the training at std 8th would prepare students for that exam, they will be starting with one division this year in std 8th and next year will start with 8th and 9th std and the year after that would be the 8th, 9th and 10th. Unlike SSC class rooms that accomidate around 50 students, IGCSE classrooms usually accommodate approximately about 20 to 25 students. Addressing concerns of a total change over to an IGCSE curriculum, Ms. Anna stated that SSC will always be a first priority for Stanislaus. The IGCSE curriculum was introduced after considering the requests of many ex-students who wanted a Jesuit education for their sons but have to opt for other schools which offer international programmes. As the campus is going to be shared between students of the SSC curriculum and of the IGCSE curriculum, the SSC curriculum students will attend school as they have traditionally attended at regular school timings with a Thursday and Sunday off while students studying under the IGCSE curriculum will have school from Monday till Friday with Saturday and Sunday as their holidays and will attend school from 8am till 2pm. As the teaching and learning methods are vastly different from the SSC curriculum, The faculty for the IGCSE curriculum would

600 children, teachers & parents participate in Inter-School Drama & Dance Competition

Bandra

Navjeet Community Health Centre, an outreach of the Bandra Holy Family Hospital has since 1978 been taking keen interest in the empowerment of the have-nots, through various programs in education, health, women empowerment & community development From time to time, Navjeet aims at doing something that would change the lives of marginalized children in the villages, and it was felt that drama and dance, a powerful means of communication, would help develop their dramatic skills and promote active ability in a disciplined, stimulating and healthy environment, where the child is able to realize his fullest potential and contribute to the progress and well-being of his family, the society and the world at large. Keeping this in mind, on 25th February 2016, about 600 children, parents, teachers and guests witnessed a day-long electrifying performance at Ambedohe, when 212 performers from 22 schools from Khativali Kendra, Khardi and Kasara participated in the Navjeet Community Health Centre Inter-School Drama and Dance Competition at Shahapur Taluka. Dramas convey timely messages about how to cope with situations and reach out to people, because the people identify themselves with the characters. This could be witnessed in a drama which bagged the first prize, performed

on the social issue of female foeticide, the emotional, and psychological stereotyping of females which begins when the doctor says, ‘It’s a girl’, and showcased the future of our country if we keep killing the girl child. Other dramas which were performed were based on cleanliness of the environment and exploitation of women, which comes at a time when the nation is confronted with problems associated with women’s safety. These plays bagged the second and third prizes respectively. The consolation prize went to the group which performed a play on water conservation and environmental issues. In the dance category, with Bajirao Mastani’s “Pinga” making headlines, 3 schools and some soloists dressed in traditional Maharashtrian attire surprised the audience with their perfect lavani dance moves. It was also a treat to watch some youth bring forth their inherent passion, let lose the dance mania and perform to hip-hop, in a spirit of competition. Other dances like lezhim and folk dance performed by the children whole heartedly and enthusiastically were also a treat to watch. Nilesh Vadu from Ambedohe ZP School and Sakshi Umbarghode from Mokhavane ZP School were greeted with thunderous applause by the packed house when they were adjudged the best actors for their roles in the plays on child marriage whose practice is prevalent in some strata of the society and female foeticide.

Jewellers peacefully protest against the union budget excise duty implementation

Bandra

As a part of the collective resistance towards the government’s adamant attitude to implement excise duty in the gems & jewellery sector, several reputed jewellers from Turner Road, peacefully protested on 7th March at Turner Road, Bandra. The Union Budget 2016-17 announced the imposition of central excise duty on gems & jewellery industry, wherein the government has imposed a 1% excise duty on gems & jewellery sector without input credit & 12.5% with input credit. The 7 day strike was extended till today and jewellery stores stayed shut across Mumbai. "The industry is not against contributing 1% revenue to the government. But the excise on jewellery is a regressive step taking us back to the days of gold control & Inspector Raj. It will only increase paperwork & take away our time from creativity." - Ishu Datwani, Founder, Anmol Jewellers stated today at the peaceful protest. "We are getting increasingly expensive when competing with jewellers from Dubai and more where a lot of NRIs have started going for their jewellery shopping (there is already a 10% duty on gold in India). The Indian Gem & Jewellery industry employs over 1 crore artisans, whose

Over 300 jewellers and artisans protest outside Tanishq store on Turner Road to rollback excise duty livelihood is under threat because of decrease in business." - Mahesh Jagwani, Owner of Mahesh Notandass said. "As a nation we need to be more forward thinking - since less governance is

your mantra. The lesser controls we have the more the industry will ourish giving impetus to employment to the artisans" Farah Khan Ali, Owner, Farah Khan Fine Jewellery said.

The jewellery industry of the country has come to a standstill with the strike that has stretched for almost a week. Sairaj Borkar

Speaking about the renting out of the grounds, Fr. Magi said that there would be many groups that would want train, as with an investment of 4 crores the investors have to recover their money as the school & the college are getting it free of charge, he stressed that the renting of the grounds by external parties would be in the evenings and not at school timings and not during school practice. He said the ground is scheduled to open now in the first week of March. Fr. Magi also pointed out the convenience of a second gate that would be used as an exit point during Church services on the grounds, were formally the exit was at only one corner gate and also a welcomed parking space too during services, the toilet facilities would also be available for mass goers who otherwise would have to walk the long route to the front, a welcome addition especially for some of the elderly parishioners at a Maundy Thursday or a Good Friday service. The new gate also allows for a quick emergency passage to get a person to hospital, as only recently a teacher was experiencing chest pains he mentioned. A few people asked us "Why don't you have tennis courts?" he said but currently they (St. Andrew's) are looking at how this

project will benefit their students primary with Hockey and Football, again addressing concerns over the tie up with Infinite Sports and the renting out of the grounds Fr. Magi again explained that for an investment of 4 crores it is understandable that they would want to recover their money, but the rights to the ground are rest assured ours. Bandra Buzz hopes this eases the concerns of some of our readers and wishes Fr. Magi and St. Andrew's the very best on this new exciting project.

Deanne Rodrigues (aka Badminton Tigress) wins 6 National Titles in last 3 years

Bandra

She started playing in her front yard with an awkward backhand serve in Bandra at the age of 10, today thirty years hence Deanne Rodrigues is the undisputed queen of the badminton jungle in the 35+ and 40+ Master’s category. 35+ Women’s Doubles Title and Mixed Doubles Runner Up Title in 2013, 35+ Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles Titles in 2015 and now 35+ Mixed Doubles Title and a 40+ Women’s Doubles Runner Up Title, a final she lost by a whisker after holding 3 match points with the match score reading 22-20, 20-22, 20-22 at the 40th Veteran Nationals at Coimbatore that just concluded on 6th March 2016. Taking time out from her hectic schedule, Deanne told us, “It was an exciting journey, fighting our way to the 2016 Masters finals at Coimbatore last week. Through the draws, we met and won various teams from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Chandigarh and Maharashtra. Our XD finals, was the toughest match. We managed a nail biting win, against a pair from Nagaland, which went to the wire. After losing the first game 16-21, we managed to win the next two 26-24, 21-11 to secure the 2016 Masters XD National title. On the Womens Doubles front, Supriya Devgun and me had a tough 50 min semifinals against Karnataka state champs to clinch a nail biting win 21-15, 17-21, 21-18. However, our final was an unfortunate loss. After another exhausting 65 min, three setter against the swift and agile Mizoram pair, ending with an epic score line 22-20, 20-22,

22-20; we were rather unlucky to miss a double national title by two points. But as they say “you win some and lose some, and the game continues – LOVE ALL and JUST PLAY’ The journey towards 6 National Titles wasn’t easy for this fiery Bandra Girl who plays with a big heart and a ready smile. Every Nationals was with different partners. 2013 with Neesha Springet and Vilas Kuwale, 2015 with Naheed Divecha and Upendra Fadnis and the current year with Supriya Devgun and Sameer Bhagwat. Work and domestic issues kept this Bandra dynamite away from her favourite

sport all through her twenties and was first seen at the Veteran Nationals only in 2013 where she bagged her first Masters National Title in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Deanne says, "Representing India, is by far the best feeling ever. I have represented the country at the World Championship 2013 at Turkey in Mixed and Women's doubles. We lost to England (World Winners of the WD title, 2013) in a gripping quarter finals, where we pushed the Brits to a three set match." Needless to say, Deanne already has won 33 titles - and counting in the last three years and the numbers are adding up every

year. These include state (including a triple crown in Jalgaon), corporate, district and inter-club tournaments. “She has great strokes, but it is her attitude that sets her apart. She really is a total tigress on court ready to pounce on a weak return every time!” Says T. Maran, PBL and India Coach. Neesha Springet, with whom she won the 35+ Women’s Doubles in 2013 Nationals in Mumbai and later that year reached the Quarter Finals of World Championship at Ankara can only say “Deanne loves badminton so much that she has tattooed a shuttle cock on her shoulder. And love shows because she is even willing to endure and conquer pain to win.” Indeed, it was just a month before the 2015 Nationals in Dharamsala that an unfortunate bike accident left her foot badly burnt and swollen. Till a week before the championship, she could not fit her foot into her beloved badminton shoes. But the wounds bowed down to her spirit and healed just in time. Deanne went to the championship with hardly a week of training and won some incredibly close matches and returned with a Double Crown. “The World Master’s Tournament is a bi-annual event and this year there is not one scheduled, however, I am looking forward to the World Championship in 2017 which will be held for the first time in India. It will be in Kochi and I love Kerala. I hope Kerala loves me back and the people cheer me enough to win a World Championship medal”, says the indomitable lady. Priya Pandey

STRAY DOG MENACE Bandra is being hounded by the menace of stray dogs on most of our streets. This is more pronounced in the early mornings, when some of us go for a walk or jog. Streets such as St. Anthony Road, St. Dominic Road & St. Paul Road are notorious for these strays, that make a racket all night long, and chase walkers & bikers. The area near St. Andrew's Church and even Bandstand promenade has its share of out-of-control canines that are very active in the wee hours. What makes this problem worse, are the NGO animal lovers who deliver food packets for strays on their 2 wheelers. While most of us would love to help animals, this only causes them to lose their fear of humans and especially makes them chase two wheelers, which they say as a food source. Some of us callously even put a collar on stray dogs and "adopt" them. This however, does not make them any tamer or safer. It is time for the BMC to do something about this menace before people start getting bitten by stray dogs, or worse still, a child gets mauled. In the past, dog vans

EQUALITY FOR WOMEN? It was in March 1911 that International Women's Day was first marked in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. 105 years later, on the verge of celebrating yet another day dedicated to gender equality. But do we still need a date to celebrate womanhood? An overwhelming respondents to poll say we do. But does it make a real difference to the lives of women? “Women's Day seems like a shallow exercise in tokenism where people give away some awards and quote the same set of people. Over 42% feel that the day doesn't make any impact on women's lives though 44% still wanted the day to be observed. "Though it is looked at as a day of fun and frivolity, Women's Day also centres attention on issues like the Vishaka guidelines on sexual harassment in the workplace. It should not be just about getting free cocktails, but also finding space to talk about issues like equal pay and domestic violence." "A lot of working women face problems at home, so it would be great for their husbands to visit their workplace on such a day and see what fantastic work their wives do." But is Women's Day still mostly an urban phenomenon in India? The day brings together women activists across the nation to set their priorities, initiate a discourse on common issues and sensitize society. “While it used to be limited to education institutes and organizations in urban centres initially, it has now spread to rural regions." This year they must hold protests on March 8 to demand a fair probe into the alleged Murthal gangrape & the sexual violence should be at the top of the Women's Day agenda otherwise it has no value just waste of time & money. Bhagwan Thadani KANTWADI GARBAGE DUMP I am so happy to see you taking such a strong stand to rid our area of the garbage and the menace of cars being double parked in the lane thus leading to traffic jams etc. However, as far as the garbage issue is concerned, nothing has changed after Karen did a clean up. In fact, the situation has worsened, with the garbage nearly reaching the entrance of our building since the security cabin has been removed. I request you to keep up the pressure created so that strong and permanent steps are taken to ensure that our area becomes a zero garbage zone. Dear Reader, The welcoming warmth of March, makes Bandra and her surrounding suburbs go into a different gear. Upcoming exam tensions, financial year-ending deadlines, summer holiday advance bookings, etc. are on the agenda of many of us. Those who have home gardens, will notice an enhanced growth of their plants, this time of the year – if they are well-watered. It is as if the forces of nature have woken up from the cold wintery nights. Yet, we are being subtly dragged by diverse power forces. The magnetic pull for political power supersedes everything else, as it encompasses the civic and social sphere. Under the guise of improving civic conditions (especially where visibility is high), groups are getting maximum mileage from the press and social media. Roads are being systematically cleaned, drains de-clogged, new toilets built at promenades and other prime public spots, beautification of prime areas, heritage structures maintained – and a lot more. With an eye focused on the 2017 Municipal Elections, many are spurred to be part of many social welfare groups. The fact of the matter is that each group is marching to a different drummer – and that’s OK. It is all part of the progressive change. Your favourite newspaper has been reporting

such news – highlighting local action. If you have credible news about such activities, do inform us. Even if there are illegal activities initiated in your area – and you have documented proof, do not hesitate to report this to us. Your leads are important to the vitality of your neighbourhood – and confidentiality will be maintained. Bandra Buzz will always cherish your passion towards creating a better Bandra-Khar-Santacruz – and more importantly, your contribution to make it happen. Even as some of us are in the Holy Season of Lent, or getting geared up for Parsi New Year or Holi – the community camaraderie here is something to be experienced. Bandra is truly a melting pot of cultures – in many ways, a ‘Mini-India’. Till next time, take care.

Budgets are complicated to understand. Its about taxes. Who has to pay and who does not. Businessmen are weary of new levies. Budget 2016 is cleverly crafted on nitty-gritty of microeconomics to spur growth, check inflation, close fiscal deficit & attain 100% employment. It was BJP's 2014 election manifesto. The budget has 69% approval from economists, citing as healthy and progressive; boosting rural empowerment with an eye on growth. The only negative fallout is 60% taxation on EPF. Its harsh on pensioners by taxing an egg-nest. Certainly calls for rollback. Critics are bad mouthing the budget because they have nothing better to do. Delhi CM's remark 'where is provision for getting back black money' is comical. Amar Singh

BUDGET The Union budget presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for 2016 - 2017 is anti-poor & anti-people as there is nothing in the budget for common people who are already struggling for survival the day Modi government came to power in 2014. I strongly feel that the entire budget is lacking in a big idea and aimed at countering the perception that the Modi government was pro-rich. The budget for 2016 lacks both vision and conviction, it is the list of new bogus promises without any account of failure of tall promises made in the last two years and mislead the people to the maximum extent. Now, mere rhetoric, without vision or action, will fool farmers and poor people of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi who spent two years mocking Congress's focus on farmers, rural development, MGNREGA and social spending have failed badly in his exam as he has put more burden in people with taxes on indirect taxes which will weaken the purchasing power of the people as this budget will create greater inequality and will put the country backward in all sectors in coming days.
