hy celebrate only Bandra, was the query from a journo at the Press meet to mark the launching of “Celebrate Bandra” on 20th October, 2011 at DPRC lawns. Yes, why indeed do we celebrate only Bandra? Is it because we love living in Bandra the melting pot of the new and old cultures, though we mourn the old ‘cottage existence’ of ‘hail-brother-well-met’ warmth freezing rapidly into a jungle of concrete monstrosities with strange robots for inmates? Or is it because we still see glimpses of our old gracious ways hidden behind the brash and booming newcomer lifestyles and console ourselves that we will turn the tide and revert back to benevolence and serenity wafting on the familiar baking aroma of the bazars? Is it because Bandra is still home to the largest population of God’s creatures that live in the spreading green canopy above not only filling the morning stillness with their cheer

W

and chirp but also giving us a sense of warmth and well-being? Is it because Bandra is under the watchful eye of scores of citizen groups that toil selflessly not to achieve personal comfort for self and family but to help build a citizen-friendly existence for Bandra’s denizens? Or could it be….. Not because Bandra used to be the ‘queen of suburbs’ but because it is the citadel of citizen awareness. Every true Bandraite that walks the streets of Bandra rues the choked roads, air thick with the fumes of idling vehicles caught in the perennial traffic snarls and decides to do his bit……. Not because its pavements dotted with encroachments that drive the old and feeble to the road to meet a tragic end but because the genial accordance on the faces of honest officers still generates a thin ray of hope in our hearts……

Not because of the blue-turned-into-grey sky receding above the tops of the high-rises but because of the music of the waves lapping against the Garden of Eden lovingly nurtured by the hands that care for Bandra…… Not because the hordes of aliens that prey upon the pretty & pure but because the brigades of eagles that stand to protect the weak and vulnerable…. It could not be because of the glitzy and decadent nights attracting the low-life to Bandra like moths flocking to the light, but because of the blend of day-light harmony of symbols and celebrations of varied Faiths and religions……… ‘Celebrate Bandra’ is not a war chant between the selfish ‘bold and beautiful’ of this suburb, but it is a symphony of joy and peace reigning in the hearts of citizens who love Bandra!!

Letters to the Editor I WANT TO KNOW As a citizen residing in Bandra, my ALM and myself have constantly worked to co-operate with the authorities to solve numerous civic problems that make life difficult for my family & me. Why has nothing worked? I want to know why a group of school children waiting to cross the road, have to wait for so long that one of them darts across the road, only to collide with a speeding vehicle, ultimately losing a limb. I want to know who will compensate him for a future - dark and disabled. I want to know why most Bandra roads are jammed with vehicles at any given time of the day - and traveling short distances by a vehicle, takes much longer than walking the distance. I want to know why old structures projecting in the center of roads - causing bottle necks, have been given protection, instead of being demolished. I want to know why my neighbourhood pavements are gradually being taken over by encroachers - resulting in my old parents dodging traffic, while forced to walk on the open road. I also want to know why these encroachments are proliferating, even after umpteen citizen complaints are made to the concerned authorities. I need answers to many of my other questions - why is the Bandra coastline being altered with debris, why am I denied my fair share of water supply, why are some new constructions allowed to break laws, why are garages operating on my roads….oh why, why is my beautiful suburb ruined by ‘men of straw’ ? Sonal Alvares ....................................................... COMPLIMENTS Congratulations Bandra Buzz - for such an informative local newspaper. It helps me keep in touch with home from as far as New Zealand. All the best ! William Rodrigues ......................................................... Dear Ex-student, Thanks for handing me the paper you edit. I was happy to see how well you have covered so many of the local issue facing Bandra. I do not live in this glorious township of Bandra now, but I feel joy when I read the "good happenings" in a place that gave me that "extra" , so that I could direct so many of you, to keep aloft your Motto"Born for Greater things". Fr. Joe S..J. Ex Vice-Principal, St. Stanislaus ......................................................... WEIGHTS & SCALES There was great commotion when news made the rounds that Auto drivers and Taxi drivers, were found tampering with meters and have been cheating commuters since a long time. Until that time commuters were unaware that they were fleeced. However, on being highlighted by the alert Media, the RTO and the Authorities swung into action, resulting in long queues in front of their offices for obtaining rectification certificates of meters. When all this was going on, Bandrites are blissfully unaware of themselves, being fleeced by the vegetable vendors and others who sell their goods on the road sides of the already congested Bazaar Road with their faulty Scales and Weights. Some of them use pieces of stone for weights. Even it is doubtful whether the scales are functioning properly. Yet the vendors are doing a roaring business. At a time when average man is burdened with sky rocketing food prices, is it not one more unkindest cut of all? It is one of the responsibilities of the Govt.

to ensure that law abiding citizens are not allowed to be victims of fraud by unscrupulous elements in society. As things go on it seems that they are given freehand and the authorities look the other way. As per Times of India “ City crime graph sees steepest rise in five years(29/10/2011)” . Cheating and Counterfeiting has also risen proportionately. Citizens depend on Government to protect them from such frauds. We hope our poplar Councilor Mr. Ashish Shelarji will fight for the common man’s plight. U. D’ Almeida ....................................................... SHERLY RAJAN OR GOON RAJ It was a relief to see my campaign against encroachment in Sherly-Rajan getting recognition. Thank you for carrying the article “Sherly Rajan or Goon Raj” in the Bandra Buzz on October 2011. Not having political connections, one can only resort to the media for public support. To prove the justification for my complaint, I am enclosing copies of the replies I have received from the Bldg. & Factories and Bldg. Proposal Department of the BMC, to the various RTI’s put in this connection for your perusal. The City Survey Plan obtained from the City Survey Office in 2003 & 2010 also shows the public gaothan road with no structure on it. This illegal structure was demolished by BMC on a complaint by a concerned citizen but was rebuilt subsequently. As regards the Vailankanni Association, I reiterate that I have not complained to the BMC nor do any of my RTI’s make a mention of the Association in fact my family and I have joined in the prayers on many occasions . My complaint has been only against the illegal office and covering of the Public Gaothan Road. Through an RTI to the Charity Commissioner, it was learnt that a Social Welfare Trust is registered since 2000 with a similar name and address as 3-A Rajan which house number has been appropriated from the neighbouring Barnny Villa, 3 Rajan, which is my Legal residence. Of late, Stephen Noronha has been giving different addresses one of them being “Noronha House, Rajan” on his ration card, which is fictitious as there is no Noronha House in Rajan Village. This information was also obtained through an RTI. Stephen Noronha has deliberately created a communal angle by focusing on the Vailankanni Association knowing it is a sensitive issue & the BMC is hiding behind this facade and using it to avoid demolishing his office. I am confident that Bandra Buzz will not bow to political pressure and will continue to highlight issues like mine till justice is done. Francis Gonsalves ......................................................... Thank you sincerely for publishing the article 'Sherly Rajan or Goon Raj' in your October issue. I am attaching herewith a 'Letter to the Editor' which I hope you will publish as it will throw some light on questions raised by Mr. Steven Noronha regarding my involvement in the Rajan Shrine affair. I take this opportunity to congratulate you on your efforts to give Bandraites (especially those not rich enough to tell their stories in mainstream papers) a fair chance to speak out against corrupt officials. More power and courage to you and your team. Blessings! Fr. Peter Gonsalves, Rome, Italy)

Shri Sai Baba Bhandara

The Bandra that was…

Mobile Tips - by Gini Dassan 1. Do not charge your mobile phone batteries overnight, as: a) it reduces battery life b) battery drains faster c) electricity is wasted Charging should be done for a maximum time of 90 minutes. 2. Deactivate unused services from your service provider to save on fixed monthly costs.

n 6th Oct 2011, Dassera day, Omkar Sai Mandir situated at Daya Marsi Chawl, Jain Mandir Road had organized a grand ‘Shri Sai Baba Bhandara’ around 7pm near the Jain Mandir temple. Prior to this in the afternoon at around 1:30pm a Satya Narayan Maha Puja was performed. The significance of Shri Sai Baba Bhandara is that God Shri Sai Baba himself used to go around the village and collect ‘Bhiksha’ (begging for food and vegetables - as he was a fakir). After collecting the food & vegetables, he used to cook them himself and the whole village (from all caste and creeds) would all sit together and eat the tasty food cooked by God himself. The sick people would be healed and people would go home feeling happy. They were the lucky ones who had the rare privilege to eat food prepared and served by God himself. The message of this Bhandara is that ‘always feed the hungry no matter which caste or creed they belong to - we are equal in God’s sight and we are all God’s Children’. In 1980, the youth from the Daya Marsi Chawl were inspired by God Shri Sai Baba to build a small temple in the chawl, which resulted in a small temple being built and ‘Bhandara’ started in a small way. In 1995, the Sai Baba Mandir was renovated and a big Sai Baba Mandir was built, which was inaugurated by the first woman mayor of the Bombay Congress, Mrs. Nirmala Samant Prabharkar. Advocate Pawar was the main

contributor and Shri Sai Baba continued in a slightly bigger way with about 500 to 600 people from all caste and creeds coming together to eat good food - free of cost - keeping with the tradition of God Shri Sai Baba. In 2005, the Sai Baba Mandir celebrated 25 years. This time Shree Sai Baba Bhandara was held outside on the road near the Jain temple with about 1000 people coming to eat together. In 2011, for the 7th year running, the Shri Sai Baba Bhandara was held on the road near Jain temple with proper tables and chairs - and food being served by Omkar Sai Mandir volunteers. This time, we had a crowd of around 1500 to 1700 people from all castes and creeds coming together to have free food. The Shri Sai Baba Bhandara function was attended by Adv. Mr. Ashish Shelar(BJP Councillor), Mr. Deepak Padwal ( Ex-BJP Councillor), Ex 1st woman mayor Mrs. Nirmala Samant Prabhavarkar of Congress , Mr. Baba Siddique (M.L.A.) Congress and Mr. Rahibar Khan, present Municipal Councillor, Mr. Tushar Aapre ( M.N.S. Shakha Pramukh). All different Shakha Pramukhs of Shiv Sena and other political parties with their workers also attended the function. They were felicitated by giving them each a shawl and bouquet of flowers by the members of Omkar Sai Mandir.

“Heights of great men, reached and kept, were not attained by sudden flight, but they - while their companions slept, were soaring onward through the night” There was an assumed law for Bandra before 1960 that no building should reach beyond 3 floors. However, between 196768 the first “skyscraper’ appeared, dwarfing the landscape. It was named ‘Hill Top’ - a 15 floor edifice on Pali Hill. Today Bandra has become a “Concrete Jungle” with the night sky etching lighted windows & verandahs of super high buildings. Around 1960, the Rang Mandir - an open air theatre was built within the compound of the park, now named Patvardhan, across St. Theresa’s church. It was surely the coziest, happiest place to be in Bandra. The tickets were very economical, as the seating consisted of a huge half circle, filled with spaced steps - where family and individuals could enjoy the evening. The area needed no lighting for God’s Moon and Stars provided this. It needed no fans or air-condition as air circulated everywhere. Almost daily, sounds of music performed by different communities: East Indian, Goan, Punjabi, Urdu, English – you name it - filled the area around, causing horns and brakes to resort to silence as they passed by.Yes, this ambience will be missed. But then, only improved facilities can change Bandra towards a better future. Around 2000 A.D. Raheja Builders bought the rights to demolish it & re-build something better. But, due to some building law not abided to, Raheja received a stay order after half the entire building had been constructed up to seven floors. It was already an eyesore and many sighed with relief. But 2010 the work continued hardly anyone could understand why? This enormous building will provide and acoustic theatre, a mall, but not a place for the laborer to rest his head.!. 2011,& the various sounds, of cement machines ,and hundreds of metal rods and daily grind of workers, shouting and being shouted at, announce, that while, citizens sleep, Bandra is towering to heights unseen, and yet, the millions sleep under overhead bridges & crowded footpaths! Anna D’Silva

3. Never speak when the mobile is being charged as it could be fatal (people have died). Ideally, you should start speaking 10-15 minutes after the phone is fully charged. If not possible, always pull out the charger plug before speaking, as the radiation level increases drastically while getting charged. My International Roaming bills are huge, what do I do? S. Shikha, Bandra Ideally, while traveling internationally, you should purchase a local card of of the country you are visiting. These cards are available in India, at select outlets - and at airports. You can get Prepaid Cards with superb talk plans for travelers. Do this - and your huge bills which may have been in the range of Rs 180/- per minute, can be reduced with wise planning. I had bought a Samsung Mobile Phone which developed network issues after 7 months. I went to the service centre and they demanded the bill. As I had lost it, they refused to help me. Any clues? A. Kaur. When buying a mobile, always ask the dealer to click a picture if the bill & e-mail it to you. This will stay for many years as a record - and can be forwarded to your service centre, if required, for service issues.

Sal’s Exhibition A Marine Engineer, unknown in the art world, Sebastian D’Sa finds himself holding solo art exhibitions. Sebastian, better known as Sal sailed for many years as a Marine Engineer at sea. Every time he came home, he spent his few months of leave devouring art history and trying his hand at reproductions of the Great Masters. From Reuben to Titian to Fragonard . he enjoyed them all and painted with great love. He says “As an artist, the more you appreciate and understand about the art from different eras, movements, styles and techniques, the better you can develop, evaluate and improve your own work.” Each painting was not only an expression of love for the Great Master, but also a love affair with the painting itself. The reproductions became subjective. He brought each painting to life, giving each character his own name. He had his paintings framed, mounted on the walls of his home and went back to sea. Then one day, his walls were full. There was not an inch of space. The solution was simple: He had an exhibition & sale at home. It was a great success. Since then he has retired and is now holding his third exhibition. He diversifies with watercolours & charcoal, but he still continues with his Great Masters reproductions in oil which have always been his first love. Every painting speaks to you of hidden secrets, exuberant dance, courage, wild missions, mystic stories and real people. To experience his paintings, the exhibition is at his home: 305 Lou Paul, Palmarina Society, St John Baptist Rd, Bandra (W), Tel: 26425108 & cell: 9819981870 on Sunday 6th November 2011 between 9.30 am and 7 pm.

Potty hOle training ndia is not the same any more. Out of the scams and the corruption has risen the Phoenix of hope for more transparency and b e t t e r governance. Never mind India. My own personal life has turned all topsy-turvy. First and foremost I get a personal invitation from the Additional Commissioner of Police inviting me to an interactive meeting with the Police Officers of our Ward. Something fishy I said to myself. He is inviting trouble if a lot of people from the Ward turn up for the meeting. Anyway, I decided to go. “Just to be seen", kind of thing. It was a big mistake. Hundreds of people had turned up, except the Assistant Commissioner who had invited us. Senior Inspector Shaikh who has a good personality and is a very effective communicator took over the mike. But the crowd was not willing to listen to the Senior Police Inspector explaining their grandiose plan of providing security to Housing Societies by making friendly visits to the Societies' office bearers and owners of flats.

I

Every member of the crowd had come with his or her own agenda. Quite naturally I thought. Where do ordinary citizens get a chance to interact with the police without being intimidated? In spite of the valiant efforts of the evergreen and ever volunteering Anita, our honorary traffic cop, to pass the cordless mike around, there was pandemonium. Although I raised my hand again and again, almost on the verge of doing the hokey pokey dance, I did not get her attention. And when I got the mike nobody wanted to listen to my attempts to bring some order to the discussion. If nothing else I learnt a lesson in humility. I realised I was a nonentity. A very old man, out of steam and out of sync. With the reality of today. I sat quietly in my chair for the rest of the fruitless meeting and went quietly home. People no longer know me for who I am, and even worse, I myself do not know who I am. If I can stay with this lesson, going to the meeting will not have been in vain. If you think about it, it was at least an attempt by the police to provide some transparency. It is one of the things that are changing. Transparency is the buzzword. No wonder then that I who had welcomed with open arms the Right to Information Act, received an RTI query the other day. One of my relatives was asking me to disclose who that attractive girl was I was seen with at one of the restaurants in Bandra.

I think that is stretching transparency too far. My life is always been an open book, especially because I write very personalised columns in the newspapers. So I rang up the relative and told her "Betty" I said, "You know very well who she is. In fact she is related to you. And by the way, I could refuse to respond to your RTI query because the person is an elderly woman and not a girl as wrongly described by you” "I will file another RTI query because I want an answer in writing" she said. "If you have any suspicion about my will" I said "let me tell you that the meagre Rs.5000 I have in my bank I'm leaving to my Cook woman” She banged down the phone as only frustrated relatives can. So much for the transparency of the RTI Act. Coming back to the public meeting with the police, I had some tea and biscuits on the police account and was walking slowly towards my car when I was accosted by a woman wearing an expensive and gaudy sari with gold jewellery to match. "Arre, Shakubai” I said finally recognising the ayah who used to look after my kids. "I become working in BMC she said in the kind of English that my daughter had taught her during her long stint with us. "Kuch loan mangta hai ?” I asked. “No George sahib" she said "I having lots, lots money. BMC wanting your training program"

"Pothole training?" I asked thinking of BMC's latest crisis. "No, no" she said "BMC wanting potty hole training for BMC people. You and memsahib and ‘apun’ were doing this training very well for the children." We drove down to the Municipal office. She took me to the toilets. I almost died with no hope of resurrection. The shit had literally hit the ceiling. "Two solutions" I said. "All the junior staff should be given leave to go and do “their jobs” over the potholes on the roads. It will lessen the burden on your toilets and it will fill the potholes. Secondly all the shooters and archery Olympic medalists should be immediately invited to come and train the senior staff to learn to ‘aim’ properly.” Finally the BMC people will be doing “their jobs” productively. I said to myself "All this I am not understanding" Shakubai said. “Where all slum dwellers going to do their potty, then? They will take out the m orcha to BMC Office." "Don't worry" I said as I stepped ankle-deep into some kind of stuff that gastro-pathologists are working hard to identify. There are lots of of potty holes still to be filled. Only tell them to wait till the first layer has hardened.” “Meanwhile I take ‘Imodium’ she said waving her gold bangled hand as I washed my feet under a leaking fire hydrant.

Games Fiesta 2011

he quadrangle at Mount Carmel’s Church is always abuzz with activity throughout the year. Be it at ‘Wet & Wild Telegames’, the ‘Carmel Rink Hockey Tournament’, more recently with ‘September Garden’ and even on regular days with youth playing everything from basketball to hopscotch. Whatever the occasion or the day, the spirit at the Mount Carmel’s Church quadrangle is never down. At Mount Carmel’s, we aim to build our community and foster the spirit of fellowship. This is top priority among many other endeavours we seek to achieve. And what better way to foster the same than team-based Sports! With this in mind, towards the end of every year, the quadrangle of Mount Carmel’s Church, Bandra plays host to a week-long sports festival – the eagerly anticipated and the much loved ‘GAMES FIESTA’. Started in 2002, this event organised by the Mount Carmel’s Youth Movement has since grown phenomenally in terms of participation, audience and prizes. The event started off as a parish community event, then moved up to teams within Bandra and over the past 2 years has gone a step further to extend its reach across Mumbai. This is now a staple event on the Mount Carmel Youth Movement calendar and is increasingly becoming a staple event of Sports Clubs and teams across the city. A dedicated team begins preparation and planning for the week-long sports festival

T

over a month in advance to make sure that everything works like clockwork and to ensure that the both the participants & the audience have a good time. ‘Games Fiesta’ has always been a platform for young sportsmen to showcase their talent on a big stage. But this year, is a landmark first since the inception of Games Fiesta, sportswomen will take to the field too; in games that were previously solely the domain of the sportsmen. We hope the success of this year’s initiative will continue in all such future sports events that we organize. This year the games will see a record of 54 teams from across Mumbai city battle it out through tournaments in Rink Football, Box Cricket, Throw ball and Basketball to win prizes worth up to Rs. 50,000. The Games began on October 31st and went on till November 6th from 4pm to 10pm every evening. Sports and games are a very important part of the youth ministry because its scope is expansive & its appeal universal. In today’s day and age we tend to put real sports on the backburner and focus on less interactive things that keep us busy all the time. Watching home-grown talent, perhaps even a neighbour we see every day, getting a chance to showcase his/her talent on a big platform is enough of a reason for us to continue hosting this event year after year. Come, celebrate the spirit of sports with us at Games Fiesta 2011! -M.C.Y.M.T. ( Pic by NayanShreenivasan

Diwali Celebrations at the Khar Gymkhana

his year’s Diwali celebrations at the Khar Gymkhana grounds were truly amazing. The Gymkhana certainly knows how to entertain and enthrall its members and guests on festive occasions such as Diwali, Christmas and New Year. Held on Tuesday, 25th October, this grand event was enjoyed by about 3,000 people including members and their families. Everyone on those grounds was spellbound as they witnessed a young group performing daredevil stunts on the tall building of the club. Two of them glided across the gathering on a rope elevated high above the grounds. This was how Khar Gymkhana chose to introduce its venture into the realm of Adventure Sports. The gymkhana has always been open to new sports and innovative ideas and has been able to stay ahead of rival clubs in the area for nearly eighty years. With the management of this club in the skilled and able hands of charismatic young turks like Mukesh Khubchandani, Sanjay Davnani, Vivek Devnani - you can expect nothing but the best from here on end. These daredevil stunts were well comple-

T

mented by the traditional dance. The members were thrilled to meet each other especially the old-timers and young collegians who thronged the grounds in large numbers. Even nuclear families were glad to spend an evening of recreation together that evening. The guests hailed from all walks of life and most of them arrived in stunning attire. A stupendous fireworks show by ‘Morani Fireworks’ lit up the night sky and captivated the guests for quite a while. Everyone enjoyed the starters and drinks served during the event. The food and dessert items catered by ‘Harpals’ and others were relished by one and all. The several food and dessert counters provided a wide variety and even fast food items like paani puri were on offer. The fun and frolic finally came to an end though the memories of that evening still linger freshly in the mind. It was truly an evening to remember.

Wake Up – BMC On reading Dereyk Talker’s piece ‘Tom, Dick & Harry in the Oct 2011 issue of Bandra Buzz, I am enthused by his motto: “We will not let Bandra go to the dogs”. Unfortunately, it already has, thanks to the blinkers worn by the BMC. Campaign after campaign can be carried out, but we will be rid of this poster menace only if the BMC wakes up. They need to pull down the posters as soon as they are put up by the different parties – and also fine the person being felicitated or felicitating us. Most of the posters/hoardings are illegal, so what stops the BMC from taking action? Every Tom, Dick & Harry wants to wish himself on his birthday and their sycophants oblige by putting up ugly posters. Recently, Kantwadi, Chimbai, Sherly/Rajan, Danda & Chuim were full of posters of Stephen

Noronha, Youth Congress President, on his birthday – in poses one dandier than the other. The BMC is not serious on this issue – that is why posters proliferate. In this context, maybe the ALMs in Bandra could wake up the BMC by appointing active people to keep a watch in their particular area. They could phone the BMC as soon as they see the posters up – and ensure that they are removed. We could perhaps take a leaf out of the Perry Road ALM’s book. Perry Road has been free from posters for many years, in no uncertain terms through the vigorous efforts of Anil Joseph. Christmas is around the corner and posters of different parties will soon come up unnecessarily wishing us. Let’s hope the BMC will spare us this eyesore. Mrs. Pauline Fernandes

Mumbai International Beer Festival @ Dprc

he Mumbai International Beer Festival held at D'Monte Park Recreation Club, Bandra on 15th and 16th October was a resounding success. Dark, unseasonal rain clouds threatened to disrupt this outdoor event, but fate wouldn’t have it otherwise. A huge crowd thronged to this weekend festival to relish the fine beer that was on offer. Americans, Europeans, Africans, Asians and Indian beer lovers sat in groups enjoying their favourite craft beer. The iconic international brands of craft beer presented at this event included Schneider Weisse, Saison Dupon, Tsingtao, Chimay, Brooklyn, Murphy’s and Liefman’s. The different flavours of beer ranged from the bitter German beer to the sweet British ale. Monsoon Winds and Pune Gourmet Club hosted this event with the amiable Shankar at the helm. The Fountainhead team was present to ensure that this beer festival went smoothly without any hassle. When asked how he managed to organize an event of this magnitude, Shankar replied that they already had loads of experience in hosting wine festivals in various cities in India for several years. And this experience was clearly evident in the smiling faces and tranquil mood of the beer lovers that weekend.

T

Kapil Khanna, a local beer aficionado, said that it was wonderful to participate in an event like this in our own backyard - and he wished to thank the organizers for giving him this opportunity to taste international brands. The live music provided by ‘Peppers’ enthralled the crowd on Saturday, while ‘Helena and the Mumbai Mariachis’ did likewise on Sunday. They played all-time hits like “Hotel California” and “I want to Break Free”, which made the crowd go wild. But there was much more on offer that weekend. The food menu included delicious shawarma, burgers, pizzas, pastas, sushi and chinese cuisine. At the entrance, Atelier, the highend fashion magazine was promoted. Moreover, there were beer quizzes and information sessions on brewing - like the one conducted by Navin Mittal, the owner of Gateway Brewing Co. - who taught avid learners on how to prepare beer at home, without the use of chemicals and preservatives. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience for all the beer lovers who visited this grand event. Vivek Pereira (Pic by Kyle D’souza)

BAZAAR & BLING @ Candies

hat is ‘Bazaar & Bling? was the first though that entered my mind as I walked into Candies on the 15th of October 2011. Shop - but don’t drop, Grab the best deals, Shuffle through the coolest gifts are some slogans that aptly describe the Bazaar & Bling. Meeting up with Candice Pereira, who organized this years Bling Bazaar gave me an insight on this event. Affordable, pricey, desirable gifts for family, friends & colleagues - keeping in mind new generation trends. There was a variety of gift accessories, which included a wide range of bags, an assortment of trinkets, chains, jewellery and semi- precious jewellery, bath products, badges and many other accessories, which dazzled the eyes of the young and the old. Less common more sense, the stall that was

W

selling bands and badges, attracted a fair share of the crowd mostly comprising of youngsters. The Healing Pyramid, a tarot stall added a new dimension to the Bazaar & Bling for those who are spiritually inclined. The Metta Spa was another attraction that offered sensational foot massages. On asking some stall owners, as well as people for their feedback, I came to know that the crowd was better in the past years. This year it was mostly the college crowd, not wanting to spend much. There was no bulk buying and people had smaller budgets. Overall , this year’s Bazaar and Bling was a success and left us looking forward to next year’s event. Nayan Sreenivasan

Nutan Nagar Navratri Utsav

or the last 10 years, I Mr. Ashok Motwani, president of Nutan Nagar Navratri Utsav and my team have been organizing Garba and Dandiya Raas at Nutan Nagar housing Society. This year, Fr Jude Fernandes (S.J.), the principal of St. Stanislaus High School attended the function as a special invitee and Mr. Deepak Padwal (Ex- municipal councilor) was the chief guest. St. Stanislaus students & resident stanislites from (std IV to std X), Master Deep Chandaria, Master Yash Desai, Master Smith Chheda, Master Ashutosh Somaiya, Master Pratham Vadhan, Master Druwin Nisar, Master Jainam Shah, Master Jainam Nisar, Master Ishaan Wadwa and Master Gurmeet Sethi actively took part in the Garba dance. The highlight of the Navrati Utsav was the Rajashtani folk dance in which women wore Rajashthani costumes, carry about (5 to 6) matkas on their head and play garba. Fr. Jude

F

was witness to this Rajashtani folk dance and he was thrilled at the skill these women had with balancing their matkas while dancing the garba dance. The resident Stanislites thoroughly enjoyed the garba and dandia raas. Fr. Jude Fernandes was sporting enough to take part in the garba dance and danced a few steps. Prior to this, at St. Stanislaus High school, the Navrati Utsav began with teachers and masters wearing dress of the nine colours of the Navratri function. The Colours are (Blue, Yellow, Green, Grey, Orange, White, Red, Purple & pink colour on Vijayadasami or Dusserah day. It is righty said that Navrati Utsav is the function of light, music and a symbol of unity and brotherhood which culminates into the festival of Dusserah which signifies the Victory of Good over Evil. Sherly Rajan or Goon Raj II Local Response The article under the above heading in the October issue of Bandra Buzz brought back fond memories of the idyllic surroundings we used to live – cottages & green fields. Cottage owners were forced to sell because of repair expenses compounded by the amount one has to pay to the BMC to obtain the repair permission. I am among the older residents of this area and the public gaothan road now usurped by the Congress Youth President Mr. Stephen Noronha – and made into his own fiefdom, was once a short-cut for us to go to the neighbouring shops, one of them ‘Uncle Tom’s Shop’, now non-existent. Francis Gonsalves has been commended by a number of people for his campaign against this appropriation of the public gaothan road. Unfortunately, the BMC has no backbone. Inspite of authentic documents provided by the complainant, they prefer to appease political bigwigs. Will truth triumph ? – only time will tell! Mrs. Pauline Fernandes

is true. I may not have used the same words, but I did encourage him in fostering devotion to Our Lady. I was also glad to celebrate mass in front of the cross. Photographs are therefore unnecessary. In fact, our family cooperated with Steven in promoting the devotion right up to the year 2007.

Response from Rome On reading your October issue on the net, I saw my name appear on page five in the article 'Sherly Rajan or Goon Raj'. I also realize that Mr. Steven Noronha, the Youth Congress Politician claims to be quoting me. I therefore think it is fair that Bandra Buzz publishes my point of view as well. Steven talks of the 1990s when he describes the rapport he had with our family. In the box embedded in the above article he states: “In the initial years we had very cordial relations, Francis's own brother, Fr. Peter Gonsalves celebrated Mass here [at the tiny shrine at the base of the cross near our house] - and he tapped me, saying: 'Steven, I really admire you, you've brought this statue of Our Lady to start this devotion.' Thereafter, for several years Francis readily co-operated with us to get his priest brother here to celebrate Mass and continue this local devotion. I have photographs to prove all this.” What Steven says

1. Stephen is a good, well disposed person. An ex-student of St. Andrew's High School, he was & still is an outgoing and helpful lad. In December 1987, Stephen being an all rounder sports enthusiast & athlete was chosen by the late Reverend Father Austin Cerejo, the then principal of St. Andrew's High School to inaugurate the sports day & the annual athlete's meet by sprinting with the replica torch of the Olympic Games flaming and illuminated - an event I will never forget.

But even as we did, our admiration for Steven began to wane. We had come to see that something was going terribly wrong from the time he began to dabble in politics. He started off as an estate agent and brokered the sale of bungalows owned by Catholic families. He then thanked Our Lady by build-

Seeing Stephen's Side... The Truth will make us free from Shackles of Lies Know the & facts about Stephen! Do not be fooled, believe no lies, propaganda & prejudiced with allegations being circulated by Francis Gonsalves & others, against Stephen. Here are some of Stephen's achievements:

2. For over 2 decades Stephen has been been toiling hard to make the roads, sidewalks and public places - especially garbage issues, while simultaneously networking with ALMs to clean & beautify Bandra. 3. Thousands of law abiding people have been and are still being helped & assisted by Stephen for ration cards renewal and new application formalities, civic and civil matter assistance and advice, legal assistance, job seeking and employment assistance, education and admission seeking assistance,

housing assistance - all free of cost. 4. Due to the greed, vested interests, nepotism, lethargy & bribe seeking nature of BMC officials, citizens of Bandra suffer. Stephen is concerned of his surrounding people. So, on a case to case basis, he intervenes and helps the affected people. 5. When trees fall due to monsoon winds, thus inconveniencing and hindering mobility of vehicles & persons, often damaging them, it is Stephen who helps clear the wreckages and mess caused - as had happened outside the Carter road Cop station in May 2008. Drains which are clogged are cleaned with mud suckers, with Stephen personally monitoring the operations. Due to Stephen's efforts, the municipality fumigates Bandra more frequently. This was not the case before Stephen was involved in social and civic activity. 6. Normally, citizens feel scared to help victims of accidents or tragedies in public places, as they feel victimized during cops questioning. On october 10, 2010 when there were 2 knifings - one on Veronica Road and the other on Hill road by a 'mad person', thus prompting the cops to harass innocent people - Stephen, on learning of it intervened and help end the undue harassment. However, Stephen always helps such victims. Last - but not the least, Stephen is truly a great, good, genuine, well disposed sincere social worker - and above all a man for others. God bless him and his family abundantly. David Nethanyu

ing her a bigger shrine adjacent to house no. 4. Soon he built his own office opposite the shrine and called it 'God's Gift'. Power, they say, corrupts. We, the only residents on the gaotan road, now illegally occupied by Steven, began to see the corruption reveal itself in noisy booze parties that went late into the night. It did not matter that they were held barely a few feet in front of the shrine, blocking the public road and disturbing the neighbourhood. Then the changes to the road described in the article above began - all in view of the feast of Our Lady, but remaining for the months and years that followed. We realized, alas, a little too late, that this was a ploy to appropriate public property for political advantage with a religious face. Thanks to the Right to Information Act, Francis has collected enough documentation to prove the structure illegal. He even has a letter from the Charity Commissioner that states that Steven's Vailankanni Association is not yet registered, and the social welfare trust whose registration number he uses has not filed its returns since its inception. But Francis' efforts to get to the truth have come at a heavy price: his health has deteriorated; former friends have kept their distance for fear of offending the politician; the family faces constant harassment from the Municipality through notices served every now and again while the offender goes scot free. Is it any wonder that Steven can say so glibly: “Except Francis, … people in this area have no objection to these structures - you can ask around and see for yourself !” ? Notwithstanding all that has happened, my brother still joins other devotees during the Novena in September. He continues to pray at the shrine - not to please the politician who built it, but to ask Mother Mary, in whose name it is built, for the health, faith and courage to continue the arduous struggle against the injustices committed so brazenly in her name. Fr. Peter Gonsalves

Customized Getaways for Groups @ Elysium Estates! I’m sitting on a platform terrace, with a placid river running under me, mountains in the distance, a swimming pool to my left, football field to my right and a tree-lined property running a couple of acres on either side. Could this be Lonavla, Khadakwasla, Mahabaleshwar or perhaps another idyllic holiday destination? No, In fact I am just an hour and a half out of Bandra at Elysium Estates in Apta Panvel, a scenic and secluded 5 acre riverside property. Elysium Estates, started by a young Bandra entrepreneur, is a unique initiative, offering customized holidays to discerning groups. Here both food and activities can be catered according to a group’s requests. Whether it’s a poolside barbeque, a birthday party, a family get-together or a corporate offsite, Elysium estates has a lot to offer. The massive property boasts 12 large bedrooms with ACs and balconies, a full size snooker table and a games room. Moreover, what fascinated me was the range of outdoor activities this facility had to offer, including boating, tug-of-war, cricket and football on a lush green field. Additionally, with both Karnala and Lonavla within the vicinity, this estate is great for trekking and adventure sports groups as well. The customizable menu at Elysium Estates boasts a range of barbeque items, Indian and Chinese cuisines and delicious thin crust pizzas prepared fresh on site. The owner’s attention to detail while customizing a groups getaway and the property’s proximity to Mumbai, makes this a fascinating getaway destination. 3rd Annual Bandra Wine Tasting Festival @ D.P.R.C. he Bandra Wine Tasting Festival is back for its third edition! To be held in Bandra’s D’Monte Park Recreation Centre on November 12 and 13, 2011, this year’s festival promises wine enthusiasts a weekend extravaganza featuring cutting-edge wines, master chefs, wine-makers, and gourmet food. Says B. Shankarnarayan, Festival Coordinator, “The Bandra Wine Festival is a world class wine and food event that brings together not just wine aficionados, but also wineries and experts from the industry. This year, we have more than 40 Indian and International wines on offer - ranging from Chenin Blancs, Zinfandels, young 2011 vintages, and award winning French Oak Barrel Aged Reserves, to exciting new varietals and blends. There will be something to please every palate.” For wine enthusiasts looking to learn more, the Festival will also feature interactive sessions with wine makers, educative talks on the process of making wines, and tips on wine-tasting. Foodies can look forward to a wide choice of cuisines at the food court. Pizzas, Sushi, Tempura, Sangria, Grilled Lobsters, Cheese Fondue… and much more. Cordon Bleu Chef, Shilarna Vaze will be serving up Ninja Sushi and fruit-laden red and white wine, Sangria. The Festival will also feature many live and interactive events. Sommeliers and wine experts will be at hand to guide the wine curiouis. “The Festival is all about the people. There are so many ways to be involved – wine discussions, blind tasting challenges and raffles with high value prizes like wine aerators, decanters and other accessories,” enthuses Shankaranarayan. Live music performance is on the cards for Saturday evening. The Rs.500 value-for-money wine festival

T

kit includes an elegant souvenir wine glass, 10 complimentary wine tastings and admittance to festival shows and contests. Discount coupons from vendors and wineries will also be available. Visitors to the 2010 festival can avail a special Welcome Back promotional offer on the festival website. Special discounts for groups of five are also available. A relatively new concept in India, a Wine Tasting Festival provides a platform for wineries to offer customers a sampling of their different wines. “Traditionally, India is not a wine-drinking nation - and only a small percentage of drinkers have switched from hard alcohol to wine. Even this group remains largely ignorant of the wide variety of wines in the market. A tasting festival creates a level playing field for both well known and fledgling wineries to introduce their products to an audience that may have no idea that some of these wines even exist,” informs Shankaranarayan. “New world wines from India are beginning to make their presence felt across the world, with several winning international awards. The idea of a wine tasting festival is to demystify the world of wine - and remove the elitist tag associated with it, in this country.” The Festival is being organised by Monsoon Winds, a venture of Pune Gourmet Club ( www.punegourmet.in ) members under the aegis of Celebrate Bandra, an initiative of Celebrate Bandra Trust and Fountainhead Promotions and Events Pvt. Ltd. Says Shankaranarayan, “The PGC was the first to introduce wine tasting festivals in the country. Our last four festivals in Pune and two in Bandra have been unqualified successes, and we are happy to bring the Wine Tasting Festival to Bandra again this year.”

The simple ‘choli’ has become a high fashion statement Backless is back in style especially in cholis. Every wannabe woman is now going backless which is considered very sexy. Women are now showing off their backs rather than their cleavage, the coo ones now have decided to concentrate on their backs because they feel backs are sexier. There are a variety of backless cholis being displayed in many outlets and there are many backless wonders waiting for your approval because every woman in Hollywood or Bollywood these days show off their backs. The society women are not far behind in this race of backless choli splendour but these outfits’ suit women who have a slim and trim back. Besides the backs should be well skin polished to look enticingly beautiful. You can wear the traditional choli with a sari only, but you can also wear a choli without a sari. You can combine them with hipsters or jeans and even with an ankle length skirt with or without a dupatta or a 12-inch stole thrown across your shoulders and you can also accessorise it with a beautiful stone-studded belt.

Today the fashionable wannabes do not wear the sari in the traditional way; in fact there are 20 different ways of wearing a sari. To keep in step with the changes in saris, the cholis too have undergone a drastic change. No longer are women satisfied in wearing a simple choli with short, half or full sleeves as the choli has got many avatars. There are spaghetti type cholis, off the shoulder cholis, stanna patta or a single strip of cloth just worn over the chest as popularized by the great poet Kalidasa in Shakuntala. Some of the ladies that do not have much to show off go in for the puff sleeves and round frilly collars which are the highlights of the blouses worn by Bengalis and short kurties with buttons down the front worn by women un UP and Bihar. The neck varies according to the occasion and the social class of the wearer, even the texture, print and material an important role in selecting a choli. A bandhani or a mirror work choli looks lovely on a plain chiffon sari and chiffon or a georgette choli looks real cool with a conventional sari. Dean Dweltz

Rahil Noorani Creates Waves at the F1 Race Track

andra Buzz spoke to Rahil Noorani, who is just back after participating in the JK Racing Asia Series in the Formula BMW held during the support car race at the Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida, last month. BandraBuzz was the first publication to break the news about him participating in this international racing series in our last issue. For our readers who have been following our front page story which appeared in our June issue this year, after he got to participate in the second round of the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R Cup, from then on there was no stopping him reaching the top 3 position after each round. Since then, he has been performing very well & currently he is in the champion leadership of winning his very first race of this series, where the finals are scheduled later this month at the F1 circuit in Greater Noida. BandraBuzz will be there to witness this historical moment and wishes him all the best for the final race ahead.

B

Our Exclusive Interview with Rahil Noorani Here he shares with our readers his experience on how he went on to race from a local ‘go-karting’ track in Mumbai, to step ahead on an international racing circuit where he claimed the 15th position among 20 drivers at the first inaugural F1 racing event that the country has ever witnessed and where millions of motor race enthusiast cheered the “Gods of Racing” to glory.

ence of racing at the Buddh Int’l Circut at Greater Noida ? The experience of racing at the circuit like the Buddh, in India was something I feel very proud of, for starters. It is a world-class race track and also one of the highest in terms of speed and track elevation change. How did you perform among the international drivers in this race ? Obviously the other drivers had been driving for almost over the whole year if not more, some almost for 3 years. So, to just sit in a new car for 2 sessions of 30 minutes each and expect to be on top is not realistic. So we went with realistic goals in terms of lap-times. By the end of the weekend I was just 3 seconds off the leaders pace and was satisfied, as I hadn't even used another set of tyres!

Did you ever dream that one day you will drive a Formula BMW car ? I was a guest driver at the JK Racing Asia Series that runs on Formula BMW cars. Well, I knew that the next step to international racing was JK RAS, if I was taking up singleseater racing, as it is the most competitive series in Asia-Pacific. But of course, the feeling of driving the car was nothing like I ever imagined. It was superb! Where you able to meet up with the "Gods of Racing" during your trip ? Could you describe your first-hand experi- Unfortunately, F1 drivers have packed sched-

ules during a GP. Hence, I was unable to interact with them. What are your plans for the future in motor racing ? My plan is to win the Volkswagen Polo R Cup championship and then look forward from there! That will open up a lot of doors for me. Do you see yourself taking part in Int'l racing events? For sure, I'm ready to race internationally. Hopefully if I can raise enough money next year through sponsors it will be achievable. What message would you like to give our youngsters who plan to take up motor racing has a sport? It’s the right time to take up motorsport. It’s growing rapidly all over Asia and especially in India. I'd wish them all the best and my advice to them would be to ‘be willing to learn and push yourself!’ - David Vaz
