Clashes between Fisherfolk Communities halt the Jetty Project at Chimbai

Personal differences and internal clashes between communities of the fisherfolks at Chimbai beach, Bandra west have halted the construction of a boat parking yard for a jetty and 3 boat parking dhakkas. Fisherfolks from the Chimbai East Indian Koli Samaj (CEIKS) are facing difficulties in daily fishing activities with no jetty and parking yard as around 30 people residing at Chimbai have opposed the jetty project. On the other hand, the opposing parties claim the project will lead to the breaking of rocks ultimately resulting in flooding homes. How did it all begin? Chimbai, a well-known beach which connects Carter Road waters to Bandstand, is home to over 1,500 families who mostly depend on fishing to earn their living. In 2008, the active fisherfolks approached the State Fisheries Department to make a society. Davin Candoria

So, we collected all the required documents to make a society, the government got all necessary permissions & approvals & achieved recognition as a fishing society, which is complete & the registration number is about to be given yet by fishery department.” What is a jetty? How does it help in fishing? Jetty is a long ramp made in koliwadas across India for fishermen. It is a walkway from the shoreline up till the sea where boats are floating & parked in the water. Fisherfolks need to walk & get & take goods, fish, ice, equipment’s, fishing nets, oars, fuel, oil, passengers & fish. Fisherfolks at Chimbai got three dhakkas & one jetty approved for the

Cleaning Bandra a Step at a Time As most residents would agree, Bandra, like the rest of Bombay, is in a downward spiral when it comes to cleanliness and sanitation. An evening walk up the old lane that leads from H.K. Bhabha Road to Mount Mary’s Basilica led to an unpleasant and unexpected surprise. This lane had been the site of a battle of sorts about 5 years ago, between the residents of Bandra & a certain celebrity, a relatively recent resident of the area, who unilaterally built a ramp there. While that battle was won by the citizens, the lane has since been forgotten again. The said lane leads to century-old steps that used to connect the area now known as Bandstand, to Mount Mary’s. I was dismayed to see the state of the steps, which are a part of Bandra’s heritage. Garbage, debris & yard waste lined the entire south side of the steps & lane, from outside the rear entrance of “Retreat House” up to the celebrity’s mansion. It was disturbing to see that what was once a path for pilgrims to a holy site, a fact that was well discussed 5 years ago during the battle with the celebrity, was in this state of neglect. With few options to clean up the mess, I

Garbage, debris & yard waste lined the entire south side of the heritage steps & lane turned to the Facebook group known as “Khar & Santa Cruz Civic Issues”, spearheaded by activist & Santa Cruz resident Deyasini Choudhury. Though focusing on the civic issues of Khar & Santa Cruz, it now covers those of Bandra too, being a part of the BMC’s H/West ward. I was pleasantly surprised to see that within a few days of letting the group know of the state of Bandra’s heritage steps, the BMC finally took action. A small garbage van drove up the lane

right up to the old steps on the morning of November 12th, & extracted tons of dirt & debris. While the heritage steps themselves are in bad shape due to years of neglect, dumping garbage at such a place is the height of civic irresponsibility. Though the steps have been cleared of garbage at the time of this writing, it remains to be seen as to how long this will last. Each of us, therefore, must do what we can to speak up, and take action when we are

BMC cleared the heritage steps at the receiving end of such unpleasant surprises. Bandra’s heritage remains in the hands of Bandorans. While common citizens have limited means & resources to turn to for help, let us try & save Bandra, especially places like this, that deserved to be saved for future generations. A resident who did not wish to be named, said, “The construction of the parking yard for the jetty will break rocks and affect the houses onshore. Also, the necessary permissions have not been obtained for this project.” But none of the family members opposing the project wished to be quoted in fact, when Bandra Buzz reached out and contacted them repeatedly they did not wish to share information or respond. What does the Koli Samaj say? Fisherfolks of the Koli Samaj claim people are opposing the project because they have personal issues and internal clashes. Plasy Koli - Joint Secretary said, “This project would not have been inaugurated in the first place by the state if we did not have all the necessary permissions. We have taken all the approvals.” Candoria added, “This project will not harm a single mangrove as we are constructing the parking yard far away from the mangrove zone.” Damian Cabral (Joint Treasurer of Chimbai East Indian Koli Samaj Sanstha), another fisherman, said, “Most of us are continuing with fishing as a hobby more than a commercial business. But if we have the jetty service then we will be able to increase our catch and buy big boats, the opposing families have a problem with this. Under Pressure Dear Reader, The countdown to the festive season is very unique in Bandra, as this is the hub of social activities. It’s already November & all event venues are gearing up for their year-end & new year programmes. With a dip in the temperature & the rain finally – yes, finally stopping, we are all set for ‘that time of the year’. Right now, most of us are under pressure. Commitments to keep. Work targets to meet. The heat is on – & will reach a peak as the year changes at midnight, New Year Day. Bandraites who are club members, await multiple events, catering to different age groups. Senior Citizens have their parties & picnics. Children have their events, with multiple sub-age groups. Of course, party-animals are looking forward to that special dinner dance at

the most happening place – with their new tuxedo or designer dress, to grace the occasion. With the results of MLA elections just out - Bandra East & West now have different parties, each having their agendas. This can have good or bad repercussions. Healthy competition or non-co-operation can make or break what citizens will experience in the next five years. BKC, Bandra East, Bandra, Khar & Santa Cruz West have many pending projects, waiting to be completed. Imagine, a prime area has a railway station, without a single escalator, to ease the plight of daily commuters. Maha Govt – Finally the Son also Rises Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2019 was lacklustre starting with campaign followed by a result that showed a majority for the saffron brigade of two parties, jostling for power to take home the CM’s Chair. One talked about 50-50 formula, while the other disagreed. One suggested CM’s post for 2.5 years; others ridiculed the whole idea as baseless & without any substance. The political taunting game started & media went into a frenzy, chasing leaders of other parties whom for all along we thought were dead. With a new equation, they have come back to life. What a wonderful circus this is called the Game of Thrones. Ride on Brother; this is the only place in the world where even a beggar can become King, overnight. In the present context, there is a figure that was once Dy CM of Maharashtra imprisoned for money laundering, out on bail and now sitting with Governor & his Party Bosses, discussing how to form a government. You can’t get such type of politicians anywhere in the world. That is why we call our political system a Mockery of Democracy. One partner of the saffron alliance had taken for granted that Maharashtra Government belongs to them with the hope of building an expressway from here to Nagpur. Its performance has not been good and was ditto copying how their parent body at the Centre was performing its duties; least bothered of providing good governance, eradicating unemployment, removing the deplorable state of basic infrastructure like roads, housing, healthcare etc. In the past five years, nothing has changed. Mumbai has gone from bad to

worse. They don’t talk anymore about Ache Din because that was an eyewash proving, incompetence & incapable of governance. Yes, the old CM was good, but bad in making decisions, more interested in Highway Development, Metro Transport and Coastal Road etc. While no thought was given to basic needs of good roads, eradication of potholes, undue flooding & non-existent Disaster Management for floods. Prices of vegetables have risen causing widespread resentment. Onion prices in Bandra’s Bazaar Road are selling at Rs. 100/- a kilo. Though the result showed the majority for two religious parties, their attempts to form govt. proved futile. Junior partner has had enough of being pushed around. It has realized that unless it rocks the boat, they will drown in deep-sea & put into oblivion forever. The configuration for the new government was hanging in balance for 16 days and then-Governor declared President’s rule. This action invited horse-trading which is nothing new in India. Getting elected is in itself a business. From the time the Saffron Brigade has come to power at the Cen-

tre in 2014, each State Election has been settled by the intervention of the Supreme Court. States like Karnataka, Uttrakhand, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa & now Maharashtra are examples to show how the Ruling Party wants to grab power by subverting the Constitution. The three parties in Maharashtra have managed to chalk out a Common Minimum Programme after a lot of meetings between their senior leaders. A consensus was reached for who will be the next CM. The Son promised his late father the founder of the Party that one day he will see that a member of their family will finally become the CM of Maharashtra. That will happen on 28th November 2019 at Shivaji Park where he will take the oath of office of the CM. This is going to be historic. On paper the three parties have come together to keep the lone wolf out, but for how long? The saffron party is widely known for its aggressive stance, money power & being ruthless at any cost. Bringing back Bandra’s Memorable Moments For those born in the 1950s, ’60s or even the ’70s; fond memories of how Bandra was – is imprinted in their minds, never to be erased. These last 7 decades have seen Bandra evolve much more than in the recent past. Just see how Bandra’s very own ‘centre-stage’, Hill Road, has changed. Hill Road of the mid-1900s was nothing like it is today. She was famous for her Shops – that attracted people like a moth towards the light. Now, senior citizens call it ‘Hell Road’, in disgust - as all the unique charm it had, has vanished with time. Some of the well-known shops that disappeared from Hill Road are Hiro Music Shop, Benhur Video Cassettes, Gazebo Restaurant, Sound Source, Wahedna Stores, Jai Jawan Stall. (Relocated), Nasir’s Chinese Cart, Hill Studio, Abro Chicken Shop, Shalimar Cold Storage, Pinky Pat, Illusions Disco, Hilton Departmental Stores, Choice Centre, Cashbah Restaurant, Blue Circle Snacks, Rock Around The Clock, Karachi Sweets. (Relocated), Bashiruddin Kite Shop, Bandra International Hotel and many more. CHEAP JACK Back then, Hill Road was the be-all & end-all - because it had everything one needed. The shops of yesteryear were fascinating. There was this tiny cubby hole, called ‘Borees’. Borees was actually ‘Bori’s’ because it was owned by a Bori Muslim family. One person stood on the road & did business over a glass counter, which was the top of a glass case - with the most tantalizing array of multi-co-

loured lozenges, chocolates, marshmallows & toffees, that made most customers drool. A venerable bearded Bori Muslim man, complete with white skull cap presided over the shop - seated cross-legged on a mat behind the glass case. This shop had all the stationery a school going kid needed & stocked the latest innovations of that era. You could have been the proud owner of the first scented eraser in your class, bought from Bori’s of course. Today, this small cubby hole has metamorphosed into 3 large shops owned by the 3 sons of that enterprising man, now manned by his grandsons. The worst casualty of this change has been those tantalizing sweets. Today, none of the shops stock them. What a pity! HAPPY BOOK STALL The other haven was Happy Book Stall. You could savour the smell of new books while reading them. Back then, paperbacks were priced at Rs 2.50paise - and the hardbacks of the same titles were a princely sum of Rs. 5/-. Mercifully, ‘Happy Book Stall’ is unchanged, except for the fact that it has been air-conditioned and the son has replaced the old owner. Others in Bandra have similar fond memories too, because many a time, celebrities were seen sitting there on a stool, pouring over an interesting book. Today, you can still see people keenly browsing books – and buying some for their collection. It’s nice to know, that the present generation is savouring the same joys.

MAC RONELLS Who can forget the confectionery of all confectioneries: Mac Ronells at Hill Road. All of Bombay, including Bollywood’s film stars, came here to order birthday cakes because Mac Ronells could fashion cakes in the shape of any object the heart desired: from a pipe to a piano. Mac Ronells also made the most delicious chicken patties, sandwiches & luscious lemon tarts. And pure marzipan Easter Eggs during Easter, with tempting pure pastel, coloured marzipan fruits during Christmas. Sadly Mac Ronells, Hill Road closed down due to reasons unknown. But they don’t make those fancy birthday cakes to order any more. Those masterpieces have now become part of Bandra’s culinary history. NEW TALKIES And last but not the least was our very own local cinema theatre called ‘New Talkies’, a euphemistic name - because there was nothing “new” about it. It showed only English films & was, therefore, a cut above its seedy rival, ‘Bandra Talkies’ at Linking Road. New Talkies

had noisy whirling fans overhead, which frequently drowned out the soundtrack of the film, torn seats - and friendly mice playing ‘catching cook’ over one’s feet. But we were so riveted by what was showing on the screen, that these were of no consequence. During the interval a packet of chips costing 25 paise with a coke costing 50 paise or a mango duet costing Rs 2 was de rigueur - or the total film experience would not be complete. It was here that I came of age watching my first adult movie: ‘Wait until Dark’. I was 14, so getting past the usher was as scary as the film. New Talkies is now ‘Le Reve’ perched on top of Marks & Spencers. Hill Road used to be spotlessly clean, with parking available on both sides & no encroachment by hawkers. Looking at the nightmare that Hill Road is today, it is hard to believe that it was once a peaceful, picturesque, and pleasurable experience for pedestrians & motorists alike. The Bandra Heritage Fort, Churches & Gaothans Trail The walk jointly organized by ‘Musafir Walks’ & Bandra Buzz aims to take fellow walkers across a nostalgic trail of heritage churches, forts & a quiet neighbourhood Gaothan, i.e. an old Bandra village - showcasing Portuguese history. PLAN: The group will convene at the iconic century-old Mount Mary Basilica. Following a visit to the iconic Church and the viewing gallery, there will be a briefing on the history of the Church. The group will be transported to the 400-year-old historic Bandra Fort, overlooking the Arabian Sea and the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link and then go to an Irani Café: Good Luck, for some ‘chai’ & bun muska.

After refreshments, a short walk along Mehboob Studio, and some quiet neighbourhood bungalows, the group will reach one of the original hamlets of Bandra, Ranwar gaothan (with quaint East Indian homes) has a history that dates back to 1716. Following a leisurely walk through the village, the group will interact with an owner of a heritage bungalow. Following a briefing about the heritage Ranwar Village, the group will go to explore the 425 years old St. Andrew’s Church, of Portuguese architecture. This will be the last pit stop and following a briefing, the group will move to the Bandra Gymkhana (established in 1935) for an optional lunch (veg/non-veg) on actuals.

Lights, Camera, Action: 175 years of the Planit-E becomes a Church on the Hilltop star attraction!

St. Stephen’s Church congregation officially kick-started their 175th year’s celebrations with a concert of contemporary Christian music on Sunday the 10th November, at the Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir auditorium near Linking Road. St. Stephen’s, the lesser-known Protestant cousin to the Mount Mary Basilica, was constructed in the year 1845 on a plot of land overlooking the sea. Opened for Divine worship in 1853, it began serving the spiritual needs of the British Anglicans in Bandra. FormerlyAnglican, it is now part of the Church of North India denomination. The concert titled ‘Songs From The Hilltop’ was first of the events planned in the coming year to celebrate this great spiritual milestone. It began with a word of prayer and welcome, by the Presbyter

in-charge Rev. Thomas Jacob. Present at the occasion amongst the faithful were The Rt. Rev. (Dr.) S. B. Joshua, Rev. K.I. Dyvasirvadam (former Presbyter) and Dolly Thakore, the famous theatre actor. The choir comprised of choristers from St. Stephen’s, St. Thomas Cathedral (Diocese of Mumbai – CNI), Christ Church (CNI) and the Paranjoti Academy Chorus. They sang many famous contemporary pieces through the evening, such as Gloria and William Gaither’s ‘Because He Lives’ and the Grammy Award winner Carol Cymbala’s ‘The Lamb Has overcome’. The All-Mumbai Interschool/Intercollege Environment festival Planit-E 2019-20 organised by St. Teresa’s Institute of Education, Santa Cruz West went viral with a final count of 70 educational institutions across the city putting up spectacular performances on burning environmental issues. This eco-fest was a class apart from the cultural festivals hosted across the metropolitan because of its environmental theme. Each of the 12 competitions organised therein focused on topics of pivotal concern like plastic pollution, waste reduction, recycling, the urban sprawl, water pollution, the Green revolution, minimizing transportation, ending man-made disasters, resorting to the use of renewable natural resources, consumerism, organic farming, sustainable development and many others. Principal Dr Sr. Tanuja Waghmare beamed with pride as zillions of motivated youngsters charged with a passion for striving to restore the beauty of Planet Earth thronged the campus on the 16th and 17th of November 2019 making it feel like a mini Earth Summit. The commitment and enthusiasm of the entire faculty, the Executive Head - Dr Cindrella D’mello and the Core Team members Gloria Borges (Event Organiser) & Sylvia Chettiar were laudable, giving the fest a shiny green edge among school and college events. The passion of the 98 B.Ed teacher trainees who hosted the fest deserves a mention as they walked the extra mile and transformed the college into an ecohub with eco-friendly decor, creating propaganda for the fest with posts on social media and nurturing their entrepreneurial skills from planning to conducting the two-day event.

The wide display of talent & potential of participants were a sight to behold with the youth showcasing their creativity, ingenuity & critical thinking skills as they endeavoured to prove their concern for environmental protection. The panel of distinguished judges ranged from dramatists, to film directors, stand-up comedians, environmentalists, engineers & crooners. The Green Warriors to Fight Air Pollution The air pollution in Delhi has been a constant topic in national & international media lately. With the city forced to declare a ‘public health emergency’ over air pollution, citizens have started waking up to the reality of our urban air quality. While discussing and pondering over the pollution in Delhi, have you ever thought of the quality of the air that we breathe in Bandra?! Recent findings from The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI) found out that respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM) in Bandra is nearly twice the permissible limit of 60 micrograms per cubic meter (mpcm) set by the CPCB standards. CHILDREN TO LEAD ‘WALK FOR EARTH’ Children age 4-16 years will walk the 2.5km stretch from Bandra Fort spreading the message of a healthy environment; Children’s Earth Walkathon to have school students, specially-abled kids participating in the event The idea of six-year-old Aaira was brought to life in the form of the “Children’s Earth Walkathon” after she voiced her concern about the rapid climatic changes that have enveloped the planet. A simple conversation with her elders on the harmful effects brought the idea of creating awareness and contributing to saving our planet Earth. Aaira ideated the “Children’s Earth Walkathon” and the initiative was taken up by Alu Connect Pvt Ltd, a company that works in the field of Education and Health. The team of Alu Connect headed by Derrick Angelsz conceptualized the Walkathon, giving it an all-round holistic value. Children’s Earth Walkathon begins with a walk by children ranging from age 4 to 16 years on the beautiful scenic

and historic route of Bandstand, Bandra West on December 8, 2019. The walk will also have Special Children and Specially-Abled Children participating in the thoughtfully crafted Walkathon full of fun, colour, zest and happiness with children having their environmental causes painted on their T-shirts, some children will dress up as plants, trees, animals, fishes while some will show up like insects. There will be mascots, effigies and stilt walkers walking together as parents will encourage and cheer along the route. The children will walk the route as per their age and capacity. Every child will certainly receive a medal, memento, cap, wrist band, refreshments, pro-biotic drink, water refill and sponsored gifts in a goody bag.

We Are What We Eat! I believe that right nutrition, cooked and served the right way, within the framework of the laws of nature, can shape us, heal us, and prevent problems in so many ways. It stands to be one of the most important verticals of holistic health. Each of us have 5 selves – physical, emotional, mental, spiritual & intellectual – and everything that we put in our mouths helps shape each of these selves; right from the way we look, think & speak to the way we fight or prevent illnesses, age, feel, and so much more. What we eat is not only manifested physically in our body but also mentally in our thoughts. Decades ago, when food was much cleaner, more wholesome, closer to nature, and naturally grown, diseases and mental stress were rarer & milder forms were known. With the gradual decline in the quality of food and the prevalence of processed and refined foods in every home, we also started to see a gradual increase in diseases, poor immunity, skin and hair health, infertility, metabolic conditions, obesity and emotional ill-health. Yes, there are other factors responsible, but nutrition has a major role to play. “Food is medicine” – not just for our body but also our emotional health. Foods contain energy, and the right kind of food is what fuels every cell the right way. While a clean & wholesome diet contains highly vibrational foods, processed, putrid, burnt, refined foods are low vibrational foods. This impacts every aspect of our body, mind and spirit. This fact was also known by our ancients, as the ancient yogic texts talk about three types of food – Sattvik, Rajasic & Tamasic. Many people have reported how their anger, frustration, mood, focus or concentration improved the moment they shifted to clean eating. Their prayers and spiritual practice were also enhanced & meditation went deeper with cleaner eating habits. This is also why a heavy, greasy meal at a restaurant leaves you feeling sluggish the next day. Food is meant to energize and fuel you, not drain and rob you of energy. FOOD AND IMMUNITY The right food can feed our immune system and the wrong food can cripple our immunity. Immunity, being the first and last line of defence, is the most important barrier we have against diseases. Why do

Because food heals us, right from a spice or herb to various concoctions and dishes. Our body relies on nutrition to manufacture the right number of neurotransmitters & hormones that make us feel food. Certain foods can stimulate emotions like anger, frustration, anxiety, grogginess, while other foods help you feel calmer, composed, grounded etc. Why do kids (or even adults for that matter) who consume a lot of sugary foods end up being more cranky, restless and hyper? It’s because that’s what sugar does to our body and brain. It lights up brain activity just like any other psychoactive drug. Food also impacts our libido & sexual desire in a huge way. FOOD AND SLEEP Certain foods can calm us down, making the process of drifting off to s l e e p much easier, e.g. magnesium-rich foods. Other foods can act as potent stimulants. They wake up our mind, make us jittery and anxious & give us an uphill task to fall asleep. FOOD AND OUR SKIN, HAIR AND NAILS Skin, hair & nails are also made up of cells, and the health of our skin, hair & nails depends on the quality of nutrition reaching these cells.
