ONE OF OUR OWN! Citizen’s Candidate
Interview with Rahebar Khan .... pg 4 Tom, Dick & Harry .... pg 7 Rangoli Competition @ BHA .... pg 8 & 9 Upcoming Events .... pg 11 Jhankaar 2011 .... pg 12 BWFA Finalist .... pg 14 Left to Right: Vera Alvares, Daisy Lassardo, Neera Sahgal, Shyama Kulkarni, Adolf D’souza (Juhu’s Citizen candidate) t was a great display of citizen activism, a concern for the city they call their own, that is deteriorating before their eyes - as they watch helplessly, given the present Civic apathy and neglect that is making life difficult for them! BMC H/West Ward is known for the frequency and intensity of citizen participation to ensure good governance. It was very much in evidence here! On Saturday, 8th October 2011, a group of concerned citizens from ward 95 assembled at SAISA, PJ Club premises to discuss the forthcoming Civic elections. Nearly 60 members from 7 ALMs spreading from the Arabian shore to the artery of Linking Road, had just one thing on their minds - how to get the system to work for them in their area. The issues were plenty and the discussion had to be reigned in to keep it on track. The organizers TPS 111 Citizens Group and Dr. Ambedkar road Residents Association had done their homework well and the wide publicity seemed to have drawn the alert ones to the venue. But as it happens at every citizen meeting, the members present were eager to share their problems from upswept roads, shortage of water, radiation from cell towers and the
I
BEST route entering a no entry road with dire consequences on traffic flow. But keeping aside the trivial matters this platform was used to bind the citizens into one force and to knit together the common interests of the locality, that would result in a Citizens Charter, highlighting the urgent requirements of the locality. Combined with the search for a citizen’s candidate the aim was to create awareness among the electorate as to the requirements of the next BMC Corporator of Ward 95. With a wide choice that this ward was bound to offer, it would not be easy to make the right choice. After this matter was discussed thoroughly it was felt that accessibility, a strong will to serve and a commitment to the job are the qualities that would make a good candidate. Present day politics being riddled with money and muscle power, a subtle fear to enter politics to be a citizen’s candidate was also expressed. The fact of non-accountability from the H West Ward was a great concern and those affected spoke passionately about civic complaints at the bi-monthly meeting that go unattended. It is a known fact that meetings with the ward officials are mostly one way traf-
fic, where citizens plead for the redressal of their urgent grievances ranging from encroachments on the pavements, illegal hawkers & uncontrollable traffic snarls due to this. It was felt that a time frame in which to work out a solution to these problems should be given to the citizens by the authorities. It was unanimously decided that citizens of ward 95 will spare no effort at transforming the system to bring in transparency and accountability in governance. Mr. Adolf D’Souza, a successful citizen candidate himself spoke on the desirable qualities to look for in a citizens’ candidate mentioning the points of integrity, and non criminality. It was in direct contradiction to what the people normally expect from their elected representative i.e. education, capability, popularity. He emphasized on the willingness of the person to serve his country and his people without any selfish motive. This ‘kichdi ward’ has made a beginning in uniting citizens with diverse needs and opinions and is determined to continue on the path to progress with pavements and traffic being the urgent issues to be addressed. - Vera Alvares

Editorial Page Letters to the Editor Being a resident of Bandra it is nice to know what is happening in our area - which we get it from Bandra Buzz newspaper. Thank you Bandra Buzz for keeping me well informed about my area at a good price. Its like a ‘personal paper’ - just meant for me to keep going : Bandra Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... Anita Raisinghani Yoga tutor ....................................................... In your September issue of Bandra Buzz, the article regarding the Lokpal Bill in point format, was of great help to understand what the Bill is all about. I appreciate the wide range of other articles on informative topics – relevant to Bandraites. Please continue the good work. God Bless ! Brian Michael Senior Citizen ......................................................... Hey - one observation ! Bandra Buzz is concentrating only on either Baba Siddique or Asif. We are not interested in having political parties. You interviewed him in your June issue, asking him his take on the 'War Against Corruption'. What a joke - we all know the facts... Cynthia Fernandes Activist ......................................................... Thank you Mr. Advani for your visit to the Basilica (of Mount Mary). You acknowledged our faith - now acknowledge us as a minority, unlike others who think only one exists. Dereyk Talker Wake Up Bandra ......................................................... I am the guardian of Jordan Borges, a Bandra boy from Chimbai, who has lost his dad. He submitted his admission form for the Commerce stream of St. Andrew’s College expecting to easily get through the minority quota. To Jordan’s dismay, he was denied a seat despite being a catholic student. I fought tooth and nail for him but to no avail. Jordan says, “They offered me a seat in the Arts stream, but that’s not what I wanted.” It’s high time institutions with minority status take note of these complaints and utilize the quota system optimally for the benefit of deserving students who fulfil the required criteria. Rampal Shelar Newspaper Vendor ......................................................... This is with reference to the article, ‘Inter Religious Prayer Service at St. Stanislaus High School’, which appeared in the September issue of your very informative newspaper. St. Stanislaus is a Catholic school, run by priests who belong to the Society of Jesus. Pope Pius XI, in his encyclical ‘Mortalium Animos’, warns Catholics against taking part in Inter Religious meetings, congresses & addresses. The Pope says,”Now, such efforts (inter religious meetings) can meet with no kind of approval among Catholics… to encourage such undertakings is tantamount to abandoning the religion revealed by God.” To take part then, in an Inter Religious Prayer Service, would be tantamount to going against the 1st Commandment, “I am the Lord thy God, thou shall not have strange gods before me.” – and would amount to the sin of syncretism. Now, I am all for social harmony. Indeed each one of our fellow human beings is our neighbour – and we are exhorted to love our neighbor as ourselves. However, social
harmony & love of neighbor is one thing – but honouring their god or gods through inter religious prayer services is quite another. And yes, we are all children of one God as Fr. Jude & Fr. Andrew concluded. Nor can Fr. Jude take the cover of ‘obedience to authority.’ For the Doctors of the Church teach that where Obedience acts to harm the Faith, a Catholic has the duty not to obey his superiors. His obedience is first to God. Fr. Jude - as Principal, has a heavy responsibility, not only to himself, but to the many, many, developing minds entrusted to his care. Yvonne Michael Housewife ......................................................... “Residents of Bandra express their fond memories about the fair” is a wonderful ‘down-d-memory-lane’ read, the impact of which is perhaps lost on the newer generation. The annual visit to the Mount was something everybody used to wait for - but down the line, things have become more like a watered down recipe. The visit to the Mount for my family used to be a mass service on the 1st Sunday at 7.00 am, followed by the visit to Mother Mary. A pleasant 30 minutes of prayer & petitions later, it was usually a hearty breakfast provided by the sisters of some charitable institutions. This year, we decided to visit the church in the evening as I was told there would be lesser crowds. Waiting in the queue to be admitted within, and while I shushed away the many garland and candle vending boys, I happened to look at the magnificent edifice of the Basilica. The time was 8.20 p.m. - and what really saddened me was the sight of the tall towers, vaguely poking their heads out in the dark sky. My wife Alba and I admired the view but a strange thought struck me. Turning to my wife I said “How wonderful it would be if the powers-that-be, had electrified the entire basilica with flood lights, for the duration of the celebration. I am sure they could afford the additional expense as it would have made such a grand difference”. She told me this was done during the centenary celebration some years back, to which I retorted, “So what? I haven’t seen that, as I was away - and surely I am not going to live to see the next centenary celebration!” In reply to my sentiments my wife advised me to call up the church and register my suggestion. I said I would do something even better. I would send my comments to my old friend Merck D’Silva & see what happens. Elly Lobo Ex Mariner ......................................................... Being a concerned citizen, I would like to comment on the post-Bandra Fair Clean up. The Bandstand seashore seems to be a 'Holy Mess'(no pun intended on thr word 'Holy'). I strongly encourage corporate bigwigs to sponsor security guards of substance to actually stop what is going on in terms of dirtying the shores & people of dubious credentials staying on the rocks - as if it is their residence. Scout & Guide Patrol Leaders Workshop
An Exculsive interview with Rahebar Khan (Raja) Municipal Councilor tion. Therefore, our youth should get other sponsors, who are non-political - like corporates... Do you think Bandra will benefit from a strong & unbiased local media? Of course - Bandra will definitely benefit in a big way. Today, money can get news & views twisted. So, a paper like Bandra Buzz is the need of the hour. Media is the third pillar of our democracy. If it is strong & unbiased, local people will get to know facts - not just fiction. Your paper is unbiased & local - I just want it to be strong! Your concept is good - I would like it to soon become a weekly, or even daily.
he West Mumbai Suburban District Bharat Scout and Guide Association organized a Scout and Guide Patrol Leaders Training workshop at St. Teresa’s Convent School (Santacruz) on Saturday, 24th September 2011 from 8a.m. to 2p.m. It was conducted by Mr. Leonard Gonsalves (District Chief Commissioner) of the West Mumbai Suburban District Association in coordination with Ms. Anita Pereira (District Training Commissioner- Guides). T
First Aid, Flag break, signaling,Proficiency badges etc were topics touched upon by Ms. Anita Pereira, Mr. G. Joshi (District Training Commissioner- Scouts), Mr. Elias Corriea Asst. Dist. Scout Commissioner and Bro. Conrad Fonseca S.J.(St. Stanislaus School). Focus was laid on the leadership. The attendants were inspired into preparing their respective School Scouts and Guides for the Rajya Puraskar and the Rashtrapati Puraskar. This programme concluded enriching the Scouts and Guides and left them with a zeal and passion to move ahead putting the motto “Be Prepared” in your daily life. The mantra of this session was to go home with a message of doing a good turn daily to make the world a better place to live in. Raja, what is your take on the war against corruption & its effect on Bandra? It's a revolution. It's a very good thing. Since Independence, we have laws made for the benefit of the people, but look at the state of affairs today! At every crossroad in our life from birth to death - we need to bribe somebody to get our work done. We go to the BMC office, police station, government office... and witness corruption - where only money talks. So, I salute Anna Hazare for starting this BUT, this needs to be taken to its proper end - i.e. the Lokpal Bill. The points which he has mentioned should be included and properly implemented. Only then will the judiciary & elected representatives be responsible for their deeds. I urge every Indian to support this, as in the long run this will help improve the situation of future generations. It's effect on Bandra will be a reflection of the change in other parts of India. What’s your message to the youth of Bandra? Today's youth are lucky to see this mass movement (i.e. the 'War Against Corruption') live on TV. I would like our youth to learn from this. Anna's fast is not for his own personal benefit - it is to set us free from corruption at every level. So, our youth should be doing things first for the country - so that everybody benefits. They should not be selfish. Only then will we experience a big difference in our daily life. Poverty can be reduced or even made zero when there are better opportunities. So, our youth should be very politically aware of what is happening. As of now, only 5% of our youth are politically active at various levels - this needs to change, if we want capable locals to create a vibrant community. Also, our youth should realise that when local politicians sponsor their sport tournaments & other events - the money involved (anywhere from Rs 15,000/- to Rs 50,000/and more, even going to several lakhs),is from questionable sources, because the councillors salary is just Rs. 10,000/- per month. So, the need to generate huge funds is the prime cause of corruption. You are giving politicians a chance to buy visibility & indirectly encouraging corrup-
Do you have any plans to improve the safety factor of senior citizens, women & children in & around Bandra? Safety has two aspects: 1. Safety on the streets & 2. Safety in houses. Basically, when safety or security is concerned, there are many factors involved. Safety on the streets is providing proper roads, footpaths, rumblers, zebra crossings, lane dicipline, signals...etc. I plan to improve all these features in Bandra as per my powers, as the sea-link has caused an increase in traffic. This can minimise the chances of road accidents, thereby increasing street safety. Safety at home is a security concern and we now have police beats in every neighbourhood to tackle this. However, staff shortage & wrong priorities are creating havoc in security situatons. Security cameras installed at key spots connected to Bandra Police station are now helping keep crime & other shady activities under control. My suggestion to senior police authorities, through your paper, is not to divert your precious resources(man power) to civic matters (unless it is urgent or called for) & concentrating on improving your capacity to solve security issues & curbing crime. Recently, in my ward, there were many cases of people hypnotised & their gold taken. I have seen incidents where the police step in before BMC action. These type of incidents will not happen if diversion of police staff for other matters is stopped. As of today, how confident are you of winning in the upcoming elections? Winning is no issue - as all these years I have worked towards helping all communities & have full faith in them. My ward consists of approximately 60% slum, 30% semi-developed & 10% hi-rise apartments. Inshallah ! they will surely support me in the upcoming elections. The only problem is my opposition playing 'technical tricks'. False court cases, accusations ... These political games are made possible using their money power against all those who do not agree to be one of their 'slaves'. Now, because of all this I am a stronger person - and even more confident of winning as an Independent candidate, in an honest manner. - Bandra Buzz Correspondent

Sherly Rajan or Goon Raj In the beautiful gaothan of Sherly Rajan, yesteryears saw this village dotted with cottages, separated from each other by unfenced gullies which were normally part of the bungalows. Interspersed were short broad gaothan roads that once saw bullock carts, cycles etc. Today’s scenario is different. Some cottages have fallen prey to greedy builders & touts who have legally or illegally built storied buildings, giving no thought to infrastructure, escalated parking woes & other problems. On one such gaothan road in Rajan stoically stands an old bungalow called Barnny Villa, since 1912. This gaothan road at one time welcomed the entrances of about 3 to 4 bungalows. Sadly, builders who converted some of the bungalows that once opened on this road, succumbed to the pressure tactics, manipulations and greed of some residential touts of the area. These touts, had other sinister plans for usurping the place in time to come. With the disappearance of the cottages on this road and new constructions in lieu, this road was turning to be slowly isolated with plans of being obsolete from the geography of the area. Entrances of the redeveloped buildings were made to face another direction and not on this gaothan road so that at some point in time, this road would appear as a private enclosed property. The plan was perfect and fitted like a jigsaw puzzle. However BARNNY VILLA is the only obstruction in this sinister plan as the entrance to the cottage is through this gaothan road. Slowly but surely, this gaothan road was encroached - first in the name of religion, then for personal gain. None other than the great Neta & politicianturned-encroacher aptly reported in MUMBAI MIIRROR on 13.7.10. With religion on the planning chart, from a founder & a promoter of an association to Our Lady of Vailankanni at Rajan. Two iron poles surfaced here to block vehicle entry on this gaothan road. Efforts of ALM 121 & Mr. Francis Gonsalves got the poles removed as it was a great hindrance. Slowly but surely, an office was seen coming up at the entrance of the gaothan road. RTI replies from the State Information Officers confirm that all the structures are without BMC approval and the unauthorized office on Public road is being used by Mr. Stephen. Noronha. The good Lord’s eyes were not closed. The office was demolished by BMC but defying norms this more than 100sq.ft.office was reconstructed by him. For public eyewash and to fool them, the entire road was layered privately with coloured paver blocks, instead of the usual ones particularly meant for roads, to make it appear as private property. Stealthily, the claim over this piece of land on which the illegal office was constructed, which is part of the gaothan road and public property was provided with an illegal water connection in 2008. The connection was provided from the home to the road. Thankfully, in July 2010, through the persistent efforts of the complainant, BMC water department took action and the facility disconnected. In 2008 while layering the roads to deceive everyone, iron poles were embedded on this public road and hard plastic sheets covered the entire gaothan public road and protected the illegal office simultaneously. Requests to the local ward office failed as there was tremendous political pressure including that of Mr. Noronha himself. Then began the series of RTIs, Appeals to the highest level at Mantralaya, for the removal of the Shed that covered a public road, and the illegal office. The State Information Officers expressed their surprise and concern that public roads were being allowed by the Corporation officers, to be encroached and usurped without taking action.
tage was built in 1912 with plans and papers in place, and 2) that their complaints were first and yet unattended for a great length of time. Mr.Noronhas complaint which was purely an afterthought which was acted upon promptly by bldg/factories officers and Assistant Municipal Commissioner. As the complainant Mr.Francis Gonsalves is a law abiding citizen, he responded promptly to the notice, submitting plans & other documentary evidence a century old. Mr. Stephen Noronha has yet to give his so called authentic papers that he claims to have for the ownership of the office, which has been built on a public road. Yet no action has been initiated by the BMC authorities, which clearly shows that there is a godfather who is subverting the actions and decisions that are being taken for its demolition, as it is illegal.
All the BMC officials were supporting the encroacher who is a Congress Political Worker succumbing to pressure from the party’s politicians & bigwigs in H West. Results obtained through the portal of RTI & through State Information Commissioners, clearly indicated that the shed & office are illegal with no permissions granted by the authorities & needed removal as it was on public property. Plans submitted to the BMC by Mr. Gonsalves, the complainant clearly showed that road in question is indeed a public gaothan road and there was a urgent need that the illegal structures of the Shed and the office needed to be demolished with action warranted by H-WEST ward.
The lackadaisical attitude typical of BMC authorities succumbing to political pressure, has made the authorities drag their feet on this issue and from protectors of public property. They permit public property to be usurped as they need to keep their posts going in this lucrative ward. In fact to teach Gonsalves a lesson, a recent complaint made by the political encroacher through his agent, was acted upon by the BMC officials with such swiftness that even a notice under 488 and 351 was sent to Gonsalves on false charges of having illegal activities in his own property. It was obvious that the notice was sent at a behest yet the BLDG./FACT. Dept. disregarded the fact that 1) the Gonsalves’cot-
Bandra Buzz interviewed Stephen to get his side of the story Stephen, what exactly are your activities here in & around Sherly Rajan? Basically, I do social work and encourage localsports. Recently, we had a football tournament. Earlier, I have been instrumental in getting the sand at the Beach opp. Sherly Rajan, off Carter road cleaned & plans are in place to get it beautified. We have put civic messages on walls to keep all surrounding areas clean & green. Soon, Rizvi Complex & Sherly Rajan will have Zero Garbage, as there will be a truck coming to clear garbage daily. I interact a lot with different ALM's of this area - to help resolve many local issues. I have printed and circulated a calendar that highlights my local activities. What is your take on allegations that your office is an illegal structure? People sometimes make wild allegations. Whenever asked by the BMC, I have shown them all my documents. Now, they are scrutinising them. Earlier there were allegations that this was a Congress office. In fact, this is my personal home & office. I have all my legal documents in place. Francis Gonsalves is trying to search documents from the BMC to prove that my structure is illegal. He claims that I hold political meetings here. This is totally wrong. They have replied him that their scrutiny is going on. The BMC will decide as per their records, whether this is illegal or legal. Regarding the shed & grotto being illegal, I am a founder member of the Vailankanni Organization which is around 17 years old and have the complete co-operation of most of my neighbours in the area. In fact, he had
agreed to the procession, shed & grotto earlier. Now, his views have changed. Other allegations state that you are doing many illegal activities in the name of religion. What do you say? We are a registered organisation called the Vailankanni Association with a legally registered number, with a group consisting of an active committee. This Vailankanni group activity is just once a year (the 9 day novena), while my social activities are throughout the year. Yes, we also have a group rosary in the months of May & October every year - but this has the co-operation of most neighbours. The allegation that funds collected through this Association has been used for construction of the shed is totally wrong. In fact, in the initial years we had very cordial relations, Francis's own brother, Fr. Peter Gonsalves celebrated Mass here - and he tapped me, saying: "Steven, I really admire you, you've brought this statue of Our Lady to start this devotion." Thereafter, for several years Francis readily co-operated with us to get his priest brother here to celebrate Mass and continue this local devotion. I have photographs to prove all this. ...And then, what happened? This divide has happened across political lines. I am in the Congress, so those who are from other parties are using Francis Gonsalves, Daphne Warapen & these issues of illegal structures to ruin my name & political career. Except Francis & a few others, people in this area have no objection to these structures - you can ask around & see for yourself!
Mr.Noronha is trying his best to make this a religious & communal issue. He is using the neighbourhood community & the religious rituals that are held at the grotto as a front to safeguard & sidetrack the demolition of his illegal office & shed that covers the road. Due to political pressure, the authorities also are trying to use this as a tool for delay tactics. Sadly the community and the public fail to understand that in all the complaints and even in the RTIs mention has been made only of the removal of the illegal office and the shed, nowhere has any reference been made to religion or prayers as it has made out to be by Mr.Stephen Noronha to the community. To avoid his direct involvement in the illegal encroachment, Mr.Noronha tried to pass the buck on the registered Religious Trust no. E-18486 of Our Lady of Vailankanni Association Rajan as stated by him. Since Mr.Noronha was blowing up the issue on religious grounds and putting the welfare members in the forefront while he took the backstage, Mr.Francis Gonsalves through RTI approached the Charity Commissioners office and the FAA confirmed that there was no religious trust /association registered with the registration number that is being mentioned by Mr. Noronha. It was later confirmed that a registered welfare trust registered by a similar name has not produced any accounts or statements since inception. Ast. Municipal Commissioner H West ward has connived with encroachers and has taken no action against the illegal Office and Illegal shed on public road. To victimize the complainant he has issued 488 & 351 notice against Mr.Gonsalves’s ‘chagas’ of 1953, which were destroyed when house no 4 Rajan collapsed on to his home at No 3 Rajan in 1990s. Documental evidence is submitted to AMC in Mr Gonsalves’s reply against notice no 351 dt.1st Sept 2010. No notice sent to encroacher against illegal Office which was erected in 2000 but AMC lies saying that it is erected in 1985. Has no evidence to this. When told to remove the shed, the encroacher attacked the complainant Mr. Gonsalves & family with 20 persons on 18/8/09, 19/12/09 and 20/12/09. RTI on this matter is available with certified copies. Thanks to Mrs. Anandini Thakoor, chairperson H- West ward Citizen Trust, Ms.Aftab Siddique chairperson ALM 144 & Members of the Federation, the matter for justice is being pursued vigorously. - As told to Daphne Warapen by Francis Gonsalves

Tom, Dick and Harry he Tom, Dick and Harry was a banner campaign to draw attention to the spate of illegal banners that regularly come up during the festive season from Id thru’ Ganesh Puja and the Bandra Fair. Bandra is regularly infested with these eye sores. The campaign was well received not just in Bandra but throughout Mumbai. It was appreciated for the humour, besides the direct message regarding illegal banners. In fact the paper which carried out the extensive coverage – Mumbai Mirror, was flooded with calls .... why even politicians called them for more information !
T
The idea of the campaign was to ask questions, to citizens as well as the authorities : • Let us ask ourselves, as residents of Bandra (and of Mumbai) do we really need a political party or person to wish us on any of our religious events ? Does it really matter if they wish us or not? Does it increase our religious fervour ??? Even if it does change our lives in some obscure manner, does it make sense to have every lamp post, tree, garden infested with the same message? • Let us ask our local Politicians – Do you think people appreciate this infestation on all possible places? When there is a legal procedure to be followed, and a law which says ‘the receipt has to be displayed on each banner’, is it that our great politicians are terribly hard up for funds - and hence leave it to the largesse of the local municipal officers to protect the consequent illegality of not paying the requisite fees? • Let us ask the local Political party workers – if you have a deep seated need to wish your Party bosses, put up your banners in front of their homes. This way, they would see them and appreciate your affection. Why put them up where citizens find them blaring at them from every nook and corner? • Let us ask OUR BMC Office – is it not your duty to remove illegal banners? A job for which you are paid a salary, paid to your staff from the citizen’s taxes. If you cannot do
your job, RESIGN, you cannot have your cake and eat it too - or your bread buttered on both sides. The campaign proved that a citizen’s illegal banner is removed within 24 hours – very promptly. We wish the BMC would be as prompt in removing all illegal banners. At the end of the day we all need to understand that by defacing our surroundings, even legally, does not promote the citizen or the Politicians. The campaign has shown the disconnect - there is between the politicians and the citizens. As also, the desperate measure they need to undertake to remind the locals that they are still around - and what about the elections just around the bend?
We will not allow BANDRA to go to the DOGS ! We want OUR QUEEN OF THE SURBURBS BACK ! - Dereyk Talker
Hazards of living in Bandra Nearly forty years of ago, when I bought a dwelling place in Bandra, my wife and I were proud because they called this part of the Metropolis, the ‘Queen of the Suburbs’ and things seemed to be going on well for some time. But over the years the roads and streets have become narrower and narrower due to audacious encroachments with the connivance of the elected representatives and the administrators of the city. It is the primary duty of the local leaders and the civic administration that the tax paying citizens are provided with reasonable facilities to walk and shop, work and move about with relative comfort. Today, it has become extremely difficult for senior citizens & children to walk in these streets. Increased population & the bulging density of vehicular traffic, as well as the unregulated development activities have pushed pedestrians to the brink. The lives of Tax paying , law abiding citizens, have become a nightmare. At the same time unscrupulous & greedy individuals have a field
day in their illegal activities of encroachments and illegal hawking on the already congested roads. And the hawker’s lobby has become very powerful because of patronage they enjoy from higher ups; only a few months back one Andheri activist was assaulted (resulted in hospitalization) by hawkers for campaigning against illegal hawking. It looks as if there is no respite from this steady deterioration of the city’s landscape, unless citizens come to gather in order to stop the rot. Wide spread citizen participation in our day today civic affairs by activating ALMs and other forums may be one way to bring about improvements. But if these are left to the city Planners, Representatives, Babus and Police - the future is bound to be gloomy. About 64 years ago, referring to India’s Independence Bill, Churchill, the then Prime Minister of England wrote: “ Power will fall in the hands of Rascals, Freebooters……etc.” Alas! What we have been witnessing now, is akin to that prediction. - U.D’ Almeida

Keeping oneself young & active Retirement is a time which we can use; to do all the things we had no time to do. With this free time, there are many things we can get involved in. Senior citizens can get involved with the various organizations, like the senior citizen groups and various other organizations. There are other community centers around the neighborhood that also seek assistance and would appreciate a helping hand. To give is to receive……while giving, you receive and receive ample blessings too. One can also take up painting old greeting cards, do a little embroidery, stitching, flower – making, or for those with a creative mind, old scrap can be used to make something new. We just have to think of ways to use it well. It is also important to know that exercising your body not only keeps it fit, but it also helps you stay mentally active and helps you to learn new things. Walking for a short distance, jogging keeps the body fit. We could also meet up with other senior citizens and join them for walks, meet and interact with them, etc. We could share ideas. When you learn something new, your brain develops new connections between the cells. This builds up a ‘brain reserve’ so that you become more resistant to the effects of brain problems. Creativity keeps your mind alert. Meditation, relaxation and yoga too help. Creativity and wisdom produced geniuses like Michelangelo, Picasso, Tolstoy among many others. So let’s use our time well. - Shirley D’Lima

Gandhigiri Gandhigiri is a refreshingly updated look at non-violence and its relevance to young people today. Gandhigiri means finding peaceful, creative and often light-hearted ways to:- overcome difficulties, admit your mistakes, be truthful and direct, treat everyone equally, stand up for your rights, expose unfairness or injustice, be tolerant and understanding. Gandhigiri is a relatively new term in India which is used to express the tenets of Gandhism (the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi which include Satyagraha, non-violence, and truth) in contemporary terms. The term became popular due to its usage in the 2006 Hindi film, ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’. Sanjay Dutt stars in this film as Munna Bhai, a local don of Mumbai who begins to see the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi. Through his interactions with the image of Gandhi, Munna Bhai begins to practice what he calls Gandhigiri to help ordinary people solve their problems.

Victor & the Crowns ‘Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’ @ Blue Frog
ictor and the Crowns played at Blue Frog on Sunday, 25th September 2011. Anyone who witnessed the near 30song set list the band belted out, agreed there could be no better name for the gig than ‘Rock n Roll Hall of Fame’. The band’s name too was very apt for the genre of music and concealed a clever play with words. The band comprised of hobby musicians who find time for practices around their work schedules, proved that if you have music in
V
your blood you can make anyone groove to your tune. When Victor and the Crowns took stage, they had the 200-plus audience in their hands right from the foot-tapping ‘That’s Alright Mama’ and electrifying ‘Honky-Tonk Woman’. Their silver and black outfits shimmered and glittered under the lights as they energized the screaming dancing crowds and silverware-tapping diners to hits by the Rolling Stones, CCR, Elvis, Beatles, among
others and even a bhangra-rock rendition of ‘Gori Gori’. People pumped their fists to ‘Satisfaction’, crooned to ‘Can’t Help Fallin’ in Love’, growled to ‘Mustang Sally’, jived to ‘Suspicious Minds’, got into a Woodstock trance to ‘Bobby McGee’, were taken down nostalgic pathways with an acoustic break on ‘Teach Your Children’ and ‘Some Broken Hearts Never Mend’, vented along with Victor’s original composition ‘Don’t Stifle Me’ that protests taxes levied on professional
music, and swayed and sang along to the finale and highlight ‘With A Little Help from My Friends’ and twisted well beyond the encore to ‘Twist and Shout’. “And what I like most about this band,” said one of the enthralled guests that night, “Is that they’re having so much fun on stage!” - Douglas Misquita

Jhankaar 2011
Fire Spinning
Michael Jackson, Indian Classical dance moves and some hardcore popping, locking, b-boying was some of what the audience was treated to at the Jhankaar 2011 finale. After the great show on the 12th and 13th, the demand for passes kept increasing, though, they were all sold out long before. And Jhankaar didn't fail to impress. The MFX group-last year's champions from Jhankaar, gave the audience just an idea of what was in store for them in the next fer hours. The category Classical Jackson brought about a lot of innovation from the participants-which included colleges like Majithia, Wilson, Sathaye, KJ Somaiya and Sophia's. But, it was Wilson College that hit the jackpot in this category for bringing out a lot of creativity and also, an eye for detail. The show, which included performances from Rhythm n Beats dance group, as well as SplitSole Dance Academy, was compered by Valentine Fernandes, Trisha Coelho and Mark Menezes had the audience in splits with their humour. The most anticipated category of Jhankaar, Bring It On, was a treat to the eyes, with all the freezes having the audience gaze in awe. This category was judged by Dheeraj Bakshi, Rohit Chawla and Venky, who gave an impromptu performance at the prize distribution later. Majithia College were the undisputed winners in this category, and took away a cash prize of Rs. 3,000 along with other goodies including vouchers from the Terence Lewis Dance Academy. Sathaye College took away the top spot for their overall performance in this dance festival. Not to forget, some of the few best dancers of St. Andrew's College, performed in the closing dance, and, undoubtedly, the loudest cheers were reserved for them... Definitely, this year, Jhankaar was 'Like Never Before.' - Valerian D’Costa
Fire, to put it simply, is awesome. It scares you, warms you and excites you. It’s crackling trance sounds like music from somewhere within us. No wonder people have always been drawn to fire, playing with it and creating magic. Fire spinning is one such mesmerizing performance art that use a staff with fire lit on both ends. A Fire Spinner spins the lit staff creating psychedelic patterns of light, which cling to the air like pictures frozen in time. And now you can learn to spin fire in a true balls-of-steel 1-day workshop, right here in Bandra. You will move from being afraid of fire, to making it your dance partner as you learn to handle the fire-staff. With the fire-staff you can spin, twirl, dance and shape the fire to form beautiful patterns of light. Your fire instructor will teach you to balance / center your body and handle your staff, without fire. After the basic drills, you will learn to connect with fire. Using simple techniques, you’ll be able to endear that elusive flame, growing more confident with fire every minute. Once you and your instructor are comfortable, it is time to set your world on fire. You’ll light up the Kevlar-ends of your fire staff and scare the bejesus out of everyone with your mad new skills. Fire Spinning helps build confidence, posture and greatly improves your core balance. Plus, it is a great workout, nothing burns fat like fire. - Regan Rodricks

he Bandra West football Association’s 8th Bandra West Football league played under the auspices of the Mumbai District Football Association. It was full of the usual glamour and glitter, with large crowds, drums and bugles blowing - and fire crackers going off at regular intervals, as the crowds with flags waving and dancing cheered their favourite teams at the Dr. Norman Lewis Supari Talao Mumicipal grounds, Bandra (West). Millwall Football Club emerged champs defeating A.K. Chimbai Sports Club 5-3 via the tie breaker after both teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time in an electrifying finals. lecting a precise pass from Altamesh Sayed split the Chimbai defense & placed the ball to the left corner of the net to put his team one goal up in the 21st minute of play. Late in the second half, Chimbai found the equalizer in the dying minutes of the game, when Titus Utankar connected a pass from his right winger - and with a powerful shot from the top of the box, bulged the net. In the tie breaker Millwall were on target scoring all their goals through Aazeem Khan, Altamesh Sayed, Zeeshan Sheikh & Bradley Tellis while Aaron Fernandes & Titus Utankar scored for Chimbai. Milwall keeper Wren D’Abreo brought off two brilliant saves from the kicks
of Mangesh Macwan & Kenrick Pereira. Altamesh Sayed of Millwall was judged the player of the tournament. Earlier Bandra F.C. scoring a goal in each half through Joseph Fernandes & Zen Khan beat Celtic Carol Allen 2-0 to claim the Hardlines Trophy. Cycling is one of the best cardio exercises. This activity increases blood and oxygen supply to heart. Improved and increased blood supply exercises the heart muscle and the blood vessels thereby reducing fat deposition in arteries. Classic” title were Phil Heat (1st at Mr. Olympia 2011.), Jay Culter (4 time winner of Mr. Olympia 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010 and 2nd at Mr. Olympia 2011.), Kai Greene (3rd at Mr. Olympia 2011.), Dennis Wolf (5th & Best Figure at Mr. Olymipa 2011 and 1st at Arnold classic 2011.), twice figure international winner Nicole Wilkins and 2010 figure Olympia winner Erin Stern. The total prize money for the winner itself was US $150,000, making it the the third highest cash prize behind only “ Mr. Olympia” and “Arnold classic”. Many die hard followers of the sport flew in from various parts of the world just for this event, and thus put Bandra (west) in Mumbai on the map for future event venues. Besides our sporty Bandraittes our very own Celebrities like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Neha Dhupia, Ashmit Patel (to name a few) were also present at this mega event. As a graduate in BSC Hospitality and presently doing my post graduation in event management from EMDI (Bandra), I got a fabulous opportunity from my Institute to work with Carving Dreams Entertainment. For this event I was appointed as an Athlete Manager for Mr. Dennis Wolf (5th & Best Figure at Mr. Olymipa 2011 and 1st at Arnold classic 2011). It was an amazing experience to be an Athlete Manager for an international sports star. Besides handling Mr. Wolf’s day to day affairs for that short period, I was also privileged to witness his fitness and diet regime, which was something out of this world. Mr. Wolf was a very down to earth person and was touched with the hospitality of the people of Bandra and also its history. - Stefan Menezes had a great voice - when not playing he used to be a part of every team by cheering them on and lending his loud voice and support to all teams. Today he's no longer with us, but he will still be remembered as a strong personality. A person who will be missed right from Chium village, pali to Mt. Mary’s. This tournament will be having 32 teams participating – with 16 teams being from Bandra. - Roy Lewis
