BUNGALOW TO BAR / HOTEL? The land belonging to St. Vincent de Paul Church, Chuim, Khar (W) was leased to Garden Homes Society for the purpose of residential use. Two owners recently sold their cottages and the new buyers have surreptitiously got the BMC to change their status from residential to commercial. No permissions have been taken from the Church, being the Lessor. Advocate Godfrey Pimenta of Watchdog Foundation and Advocate Vivian D’Souza, President of The Bombay East Indian Association took up the issue and a meeting was held at the Asst Commissioner Office on 1st Oct 2015, Mr. Vijay Kamble through the efforts of our MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar and Dy. Mayor & Municipal Councillor Ms. Alka Kerkar. Representing the Church was Fr. Milton Gonsalves, Mr. Warren Fernandes (Secretary of St. Sebastian Homes), Mr. Louis Fernandes, Nicholas Almeida (Watch Dog Foundation). Fr Milton and Warren pointed out the clauses in the lease deed which are violated and the BMC should have considered this before allowing the ‘Change of User’. Warren further pointed out the BMC officer (Mr. Mahale) has taken a decision without application of his mind; based on mis-representation of information provided to him or is corrupt. “I don’t know what is pain for I don’t feel it, I always see others complaining about pain,” claims Anita Raisinghani, a professional Yoga instructor at St. Martin Road, Bandra. Conducting yoga classes since 7 years at her residence and now at Urban Community Development Centre aka UCDC too, Anita believes that yoga is the remedy for every difficulty. Starting from physical problems like back pain, joint pain, knee pain, headache, cough, cold, breathlessness, acidity, thyroid, migraine, fatigue to emotional problems like depression, frustration, anger, stress, low self esteem, self confidence and mind issues like over thinking, mind control, concentration and self control, Anita’s Yoga classes can help in all! As Ashok Pawar, Inspector at Bandra Police station, says, “I was suffering from diabetes, high cholesterol and heart pain. After I joined Anita’s Yoga classes, my diabetes has come down from 200 to 110 fasting and from 240 to 126 after lunch. I feel more energised and my hyper tension has vanished.” If you are finding it tough to make a decision in life and don’t know what to do or if you are burdened with difficulty and you can’t see a way out, or having family problems or marriage issues, Anita provides free counseling. Her student Misbah testifies, “I was undergoing depression after the loss of my parents. I joined Anita for yoga and today I am leading a normal life.” In this fast paced life of Bombay, we often don’t exercise and eat healthy food, all that goes in our body is junk. Anita comments, “You are what you eat. You are what you think.” So if you are worried about your health and diet, Anita can help you with diet tips for free to enhance your immunity. Having learnt varied types of yoga like Traditional Yoga, Power, Kabalah, Bootcamp, Flowing, Hatha, Pilates and Medical Yoga from India and London, Anita has personally benefited from yoga. She testifies, “I was a very short tempered person but now I am always calm and smiling in any situation.” She has also got rid of her acidity, cholesterol and thyroid by natural therapies. And good news for all the middle aged women is - ‘Yoga reduces ageing, you grow old slowly and look younger’, and this is very much seen in Anita’s appearance. According to Anita, yoga is an integration of mind and body. It makes you physically strong and also changes the way you
maskar to stretch your body, different poses to ease different muscles, cardio to perspire all toxins out of the body, Shavasanas for relaxation and Pranayamas with soothing chants. Personal attention, interaction, answering queries, fun and lively environment is what her class is all about. Anita structures her every class according to the need of every person. As we know our entire body can be displayed in different points on our hand, Anita has various therapies like Magnet therapy, Sujok involving pulses and Accupressure to repair damage of any part of the body. Her 23 year old son, Vishesh Raisinghani, a professional yoga instructor and Freelance Finance Analyst says, “Yoga helps to manage stress and gain flexibility of the body at a young age. It is an outlet to ease your mind, improve concentration and perform effectively in this fast paced competitive work culture.” He encourages all the youth to experience this peace of mind and become healthy more than being fit. Experience speaks for itself: Sheetal Punjabi, “I had developed high BP due to erratic schedules. Anita suggested Magnet therapy and Apan Mudra. When I did both these things and checked my BP, surprisingly my BP had come to normal without the intake of medicines.” Sunil, “I wish Anita’s Yoga classes are for all 7 days a week for my diabetes has come under control just due to Yoga.” Shivani Borade, “I damaged my back and knee at the age of 22 last year and had no hopes of recovering. If today my back has recovered and I am fit is because of Anita’s constant motivation, expert guidance, caring attitude and love.” Anita Raisinghani challenges everyone to experience yoga and feel the difference in just 1 month, and says, “Unless you feel it, you won’t know it.” look at things. It transforms your perception towards a particular problem. So whenever a problem occurs in life, you look at in a positive way and solve it due to yoga. She says, “I have changed my perception. Now I can face any difficulty in life because I control my mind, my mind does not control me.” Yoga goes to the crux of a problem
and solves it. ‘Yoga is not only meditation’ as Anita states that yoga is everything from head to toe, everything about our existence. So, her every class includes components like optimum breathing exercises, balancing your body, calming your body and inner being, various Padasanas to warm up, Surya Na-

Letters to the Editor The Tide Is Turning
The Dream Team proposed a Resolution to provide a 50% subsidy on sports and fitness facilities for Senior Citizens of 60 years, to help them keep good health. The President cited that this resolution was “out of order”, as it would burden the financial position of the Gym. Warren Fernandes explained that the infrastructure of the facilities was already in place and the Gymkhana would earn more revenue because Sr. Citizens would be motivated to use more facilities. He also suggested increasing the timings of the sporting facilities in sync with the Gymkhana timings, to promote the use of sports and earn additional income for the Gymkhana. However, the President still did not allow this resolution to be taken to vote. Why? Ryan D’souza Yes, each and every one worked hard till the end. We've been working together for a number of years, with dedication and loyalty. In team work, you get great results with a peaceful environment. Congratulations to the ‘Dedicated Team’. A. D’Souza

This was the first time I attended an AGM and I took a very keen interest in the elections. Elections are meant for taking up issues that will improve the trust - and the community at large. But, what I saw was something different. As per rule, every member must be given a chance to speak & put forth his/her views. We should enjoy the place and facilities. What I saw was a fight of egos – and the present team did not want to give up. It was like dictatorship. Every issue was pointed with a rule. If we have to progress, there has to be adjustments & amendments. Another point to be noted: The Dream Team was addressing all issues for the benefit of the East Indian Community, but our own people have let us down. It is the other communities who are ruling us. Now is the right time to think. Remember, we are the ones who elect these people. There is always a ‘next time’. Let us all hope that we all change & think deep for the benefit of our community. We have to be powerful & not be subdued by just empty talks. Lerone Gonsalves
Dear Reader, In Bandra, the October Oomph is always evident in the upswing of activities. With Navratri just around the corner, planning and preparations for upcoming events are first on our mind. Interactions with family and friends are in top gear – with many festivities coming to a crescendo at year end. More and more Bandraites are restless with the current scenario. Mindsets, Situations & the technology for change is evolving at a very fast pace. Yes, the tide is turning. There are several pointers to this fact. Dengue is at our doorstep. People do not want rulers – they want elected representatives who can resolve local burning issues. Today, people are smarter – they cannot be taken for a ride. They have their facts right and demand solutions. Bandra has a lot of activists who will not take things lying down. They want justice – and they want it now! Your favourite fortnightly neighbourhood newspaper is your best platform to highlight relevant news, views and issues.

The Dream Team proposed around 12-13 resolutions for the benefit of members, which included proposals such as providing a dedicated kids corner, some additional benefits for the senior citizens aged 60 yrs and above, introducing Smart Cards and biometric technology, transparency in election processes... and many others. However, it is quite sad to note that, not a single resolution was taken up in the right spirit; for placing forth before the members for discussion and vote. The President did not give sufficient time to the proposer or seconder to speak and explain the intent of the proposals. It could be then put forth before the house/members to decide. The President simply read the resolutions and gave his/committees views on the same and flatly rejected all the proposals as ‘out of order’ or not in conformity with the Rule Book, without giving members a chance for a healthy discussion. Another important point to note is about the Annual Report. Why was it not posted? We do understand that it is a “Go Green” initiative. However, it is clearly stated in the Rule book that the same be posted. This was one of the points raised by the Dream Team. The reply given by the President was that the same was a resolution passed in earlier AGM’s for the Go Green initiative. My question is that if the Rule book was surpassed for this purpose, then why can’t it be done for other relevant resolutions as put forth above. I reiterate once again, that all resolutions proposed were flatly rejected as not in conformity with the rule book... Something to think about! As a member, I do hope that the Bandra Gymkhana becomes a place which is more ‘Member Friendly’, keeping in mind the members need (and not the Rule book) and a warm place where people can relate to each other, harmoniously. Dillon Pereira
At the AGM, the dictatorial and highhanded attitude of the management towards members was in full display. Members were not allowed to speak at all. Every resolution proposed was struck down by the Managing Committee, giving vague reasons and without allowing any discussion. What is the purpose of an AGM if the General Body is not allowed to voice their opinion and pass resolutions? A lady came up to the podium to speak on a resolution that was proposed, but was rudely stopped and sent back to her seat. Mr. Bronwyn Aguiar also put up his hand repeatedly to voice his opinion, but was not allowed to do so." If the Rule Book could be amended to change the procedure for the President's election and also to stop posting the Annual Report to all members, why is the same rule book being used as an excuse for not making positive changes? Debra Fernandes

BANDRA GYM ELECTIONS I wish to congratulate the winning members of the Bandra Gym elections - and also a big pat on the back to those who took part but did not win. I hope there will be a similarly keen contest also next year. I was rather unhappy with the proceedings of the AGM, because sufficient members were not allowed to speak on the various proposed resolutions. I waited in vain for a chance to speak. The President and Managing committee should take it within their stride to accept constructive criticism from the members - and not just rule everything "Out Of Order". That is not the way democracy works. Also, every voting booth, should be manned by one member each from both contesting groups & not by the employees of the gym only; as was done this year. This leaves the conduct of the balloting to speculation, due to lack of transparency. These concerns were voiced by several members. I hope the Managing committee will pay heed to my suggestions. All warring factions should now work together in a humble manner (as elected representatives should) to ensure a happy gymkhana for every member. Capt. D. F. Lobo

An Euphonic and Euphonious Evening Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. lects from the donation box in his rickshaw. Driving an autorickshaw since 16 yrs, 37 yr old Sandeep Bacche earlier worked at a Travel Agency. It is when he saw the rough attitude of the rickshawalas rejecting customers, not ferrying people in need and refusing to go to certain destinations that he decided to teach these crooks a lesson. However, he could not change all the rickshawalas but definitely he could change himself to bring about change! So, he became a public serving generous rickshawala in 1999. He was fascinated on seeing the well equipped interiors of a luxury bus and thought to himself, “I want to decorate my rickshaw like the bus.” So with the little money that he had he installed a newspaper stand in his rickshaw where passengers could read for free. And that’s where it all started, then things came in one by one… ‘Ignorance is bliss’ and it has worked rightly for Sandeep for when he became famous, a lot of people envied him and spoke ill about him. He says, “People will always talk but I know what I am deep within and those who meet me know it too.” Residing at Khar Danda with his wife and two children he wishes, “I want to give my children the best education.” A big fan of ‘Munnabhai’ - Sanjay Dutt, Sandeep Bacche is known as ‘Munnabhai SSC’ as he adores the actor for helping him financially when his mother was sick. Sandeep has wished to walk bare feet till Sanjay Dutt is released. He says, “I am ready to bear the punishment in jail for him in his place for he helped me when I was in need.” Often de-motivated and mocked by his friends for doing something different and investing in his autorickshaw, Sandeep never lost hope. He firmly believed that he wanted to do something different in a small way. And today he is an 8 time award winner, covered in Newspapers, Television and Radio, part of documentary films and advertisements and also called to give speeches in colleges, schools and corporate houses to inspire people. So, if you see this Munnabhai SSC anywhere in Bandra just extend a hand and experience his unique autorickshaw and his kind loving nature. Ronald Rodrigues

NSS students of St. Andrew's College create a chaos-free atmosphere during Mount Mary Fair
Bandra Buz
When heard of the two words together - 'Bandra Fair', in our ears resound the blaring of horns being blown and vehicles honking owing to cramped space. This has enormously been helped by The National Service Scheme (NSS) students of St. Andrew's College, which students can venture on for two years of F.Y. and S.Y., senior college. They have been given great appreciation for systematically managing the huge crowds during the Mount Mary Fair held from September 13th to 20th. Inculcating a record of 5 years, the NSS students of the same college have proved to be zealous in handling the crowd and being a source of strengthened support to the traffic police to ensure every Mumbaikar is made able to enjoy the celebration to its fullest without a worry of discomforting density.
This year, 70 students took the responsibility upon their shoulders, in two separate batches (12pm to 5pm and 5pm to 10pm) Pinky Pius, S.Y.B.A. NSS Volunteer stated that this year had lesser devotees as compared to previous years, which made it easier for the students to handle both traffic and crowd, several citizens also personally thanked them for the smooth control over the crowd. Vernon Sequeira, SYBCOM NSS leader of St. Andrews, spoke of his experience which he also embarked upon by saying 'As part of being an NSS, it was an exciting opportunity to work together with the police in crowd management for the Bandra Fair. It was a thrilling combination of work and fun together which kept everyone going.' This year, the fair noted a remarkable attendance of 1 lakh devotees and the initiative taken by the NSS is worth a generous applause! Anushka Dutt

Bandra Buzz were first to report about the illegal car ramp. There was plenty of awareness created about his issue. Within days, the interaction between Meraj Hussain, Adv. Shane Cardoz, Sunil Chavan, Sohail Khan, Oliver Burrows, Russel and Damian Pereira, John Miranda and others; with the concerned BMC officials bore fruit. The demolition order was given. Senior citizens from Pali Village were happy that the ramp was demolished. There were scenes of joy that an illegal structure would not be tolerated and quick action was taken. Meanwhile action was being taken at Corporator level. Municipal Corporator of Ward 95, Asif Zakaria told us, “There were
complaints from the local residents with regards to the construction of an illegal ramp on the existing lane of Pali Village; leading from Dr. Ambedkar Road. Local resident Mrs. Theresa Aguiar informed me of the same. Along with other local residents and the concerned official Mr. Rajesh Yadav, Asst. Engineer Maintenance Department of MCGM; the site was immediately visited and subsequently the illegal ramp was demolished to the original steps position. Further it is proposed to tile the lane and put bollards at the entrance to protect the place from any such further instance. It is great to note that a collective effort got effective results. Pramod Mane

Aptly sized & priced The second thing one needn’t break ones head about is the quantity. “We have designed the quantities in such a way that they afford total value for money. Our classic meat plus masala ratio to the rice is much better than our competition. As far as the biryanis go, each of them comes in three sizes – king size, queen size, and by the kilo. Whilst the individual king and queen sizes come in special microwavable containers, the Bulk-e-Biryan (by the kilo) can be supplied as individual boxes or in ready-to-serve aluminum foil containers,” points out Farhat. “An office lunch box (king) for about INR 250, can serve 1-2 persons, based on appetite, while a non-veg meal for a family of 4 – with starters, a curry, some parathas, anda biryani - would

Dishes galore At Go Biryan, the one worry one cannot afford to have is choice. The menu comes loaded with a host of scrumptious delights. Go! Biryan serves a wide selection of biryanis – a cricket team of 11 of them, actually. The chicken biryani alone comes in three varieties to suit individual palates. Be pre-
pared to be taken back to the Mughal era with the divine taste and bouquet of the classic raan biryani and raan gravies. To everyone’s delight, all biryanis in the nonvegetarian range are served with boneless meat. Vegetarians have four very tasty vegetarian options as well. The special raita is served free with every biryani box and is a treat for even the most seasoned biryani eater. One can also indulge in a variety of rolls, kebabs, and curries, as well as the very delectable invention of the super loaded naan pockets.

The aroma of Biryani wafting from a vessel, the succulence of butter chicken, the compact yet filling naan pocket, the size-doesmatter roomali roti, all make for a delicious meal at Go! Biryan, the three-month young food delivery service in Bandra. Co-founded by Shehzaad Lokhandwala and Farhat Navlakhi Saxena, and in continuance with quality, quantity, and good food stories, Go! Biryan takes over where Le Berian in Andheri left off - to serve with authenticity and love. “Le Berian just happened as a simple desire to do something in food, explains Shehzaad. “It reached an 8000-strong customer base, with a large proportion of them being loyalists. Go! Biryan is but a simple name change but one in which there is no ambiguity left with the product and its personality.” What has definitely changed is of course the packaging. It is a sincere effort to educate consumers with the minutest details via improved packaging details and information provided. There are also some exciting new additions to the menu.

be under INR 1500. Bulk-e-Biryan, which feeds a party of 8-10 persons, is priced at around INR 1500.” So anyone can order without worrying about their pocket or appetite! Feeding Bandra Go! Biryan has found its niche in this ‘lots to consume’ suburb. While one would expect monetary reasons to be cited as to why Go! Biryan is a food delivery service and not a restaurant, let’s face it; biryani classically is one great home and office party dish! With the great packaging options, it promptly fits the food delivery category. “The sheer number of people in Bandra who order in is staggering. The people who live here appreciate authentic taste and quality,” deems Shehzaad. “And what makes us stand out amongst all the clutter is that on a like to like comparison, we offer more grams of biryani per box at a lower price.
That to with boneless biryani!” The road ahead Go! Biryan is busy concentrating on getting their systems right. “Our Bandra outlet has to stabilize first. With the Ganpati festival over, the food season will now be on the rise,” feels Farhat. “We would like to Go! where we’ve never been before!” So if your stomach is growling for biryani, Go! Biryan currently delivers anywhere in Bandra West, Khar West, and a large part of Santacruz West and for advance bulk orders, all over Mumbai. After all, they do offer the most BIRilliant BIRyanis! To Sir and ‘Cher with Love The alumni of St. Stanislaus have initiated a one of its kind Health Care initiative to give back to their teachers. The Teachers Healthcare program had its origins in 2007 during the “Joe we care” fund raiser when Stanislites from across the world raised Rs 1.72 lakhs to pay part of the hospital bills of Joe “Dr Joe” Maumkel the much loved father figure who served St. Stanislaus High School for a long time. The program the brainchild of Vikram Moorjani (Class of 1985) was launched in 2007-08. The program was locally spear headed by Gerry Mascarenhas (1977 batch) and Mahavir Chopra (1996 batch) as part of a St. Stanislaus Ex-students Association (SSESA) initiative. In its inaugural year 94
existing and retired teachers, workers and ex-principals were covered for Rs 2 lakhs each. Thanks to the coverage of existing teachers the retired teachers could be covered and have benefited through hospitalization and surgical procedures over the years. In its ninth year the Teachers Healthcare program now covers 150 serving and retired teachers, workers and ex-principals. Of these 83 serving and 67 retired teachers, ex-principals and workers are covered for Rs 1 lakh each. The oldest teacher covered is Ms Rose Dsa at 88 years old. Ms Anna Correa

In and around Bandra, we are living near several spots that are health timebombs, that can explode any moment. One such place is Rahul Nagar Slum, Bandra Reclamation – very near Candies. Here, more than 1000 photo pass holders are living for the past 25 years, in inhuman conditions. What we saw was just unbelievable. The issues are: 1) Only 4 Toilets for 1000 people - not maintained. Need at least another 20 toilets; Men and Women defecate at the public MHADA Ground and the ground adjacent to the Sea Link Road. 2) Public water tap connection inadequate for 1,000 people. On inquiring with the people, it was learnt that our politicians had laid pipe lines before state election 2014 - and said will give connection if he wins the elections. But, after losing, he didn't come back now the current ruling party says no, since they never voted for them. So they just need one water connection which will help them to overcome their water problems. 3) BMC is illegally dumping garbage around these places, making the place unhygienic to live. Don't
these people have the right to live in hygiene? Don't they have the rights enshrined by our Indian Constitution to live with dignity, integrity and equality? 4) Public water drains have not been cleaned for years. BMC officers come there and only take signatures of the people on BMC forms; 5) No Garbage Bins in the whole area; 6) In some parts of the area, there are no public water drains; 7) Electric meters have been kept open, no safety box. High risk to life inviting fire hazards; 8) People come there to consume drugs and hard drinks and create ruckus with locals and with their ladies. Police don't come to their rescue nor do they entertain their complaints; 9) No public street lights for their security. This is a genuine human problem. Either they are relocated or allowed to live in dignity – not kept solely as vote banks. More info visit bandrabuzz.com/shane-cardoz.html. This is a potential spot for malaria and dengue to start and spread throughout Bandra. Concerned health authorities, please be aware of fact – and take action. Adv. Shane Cardoz
