Over 1200 citizens gather at St. Stanislaus to raise awareness about human trafficking Over 1200 citizens from corporates, colleges and NGOs took part in the Walk for Freedom to raise awareness about human trafficking, in Bandra, on October 19, 2019. A total of 4600 participated in the Walk in 10 cities across India - Mumbai, Kochi, Delhi, Kolkata, Shillong, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Panjim and Pune - joining thousands of others across 500 locations in 50 countries, all ‘Walking for Freedom’ for the same cause simultaneously around the world. The Walk for Freedom is the world’s largest event to raise awareness against human trafficking. Globally, the Walk is organised by A21, an international NGO in the fight against modern-day slavery. The Walk for Freedom returned to India on October 19th for the 3rd year in a row, hosted by The Movement, a volunteer mobilisation platform based in Mumbai, in partnership with over 50 NGOs, colleges & corporates across India. The Mumbai edition of the Walk was flagged off at St. Stanislaus School grounds by Chief Guest Vikramsingh Bhandari, Judge, Secretary, Mumbai District Legal Services Authority. Speaking on the occasion, Bhandari said, “It is high time, and it is vital, that we create awareness about the evil of human trafficking in our society.” He then led the crowd of 1200 participants in the ‘Declaration of Freedom’ pledge stating that

“We refuse to just talk about injustice or post about it, but we are here together in strength and numbers, and we have the power to change the statistics.” After taking the pledge, participants then circled the length of Bandra Bandstand, single file, holding placards with information and statistics about human trafficking. Participants at the Walk came from colleges such as Wilson College, Mithibai College, Rizvi College, St. Andrew’s College, Md Shah Mahila College, corporates such as HDFC Sales Pvt Ltd and FedBank Financial Services.

In the lead up to the Walk, The Movement India had conducted over 45 awareness workshops about human trafficking in these and other colleges and corporates reaching over 4500 participants across India in just the last two months. These sessions have aimed at awakening the public consciousness to the reality of human trafficking, understanding the signs of trafficking happening around us, and knowing how to respond to such situations. At each such session, The Movement India has highlighted

the work of its partner local government and NGO bodies working in the field of human trafficking. Right now, there are 8 million people trafficked in India for sex, labour, organs, forced marriages, domestic servitude and child soldiery, according to the Global Slavery Index 2018. 40.3 million people are in modern-day slavery globally, according to the International Labour Organisation (2016). From missing children, homeless orphans to HIV/AIDS, CCDT NGO strives to make lives better Every child needs protection. And this protection is not only from physical, mental or sexual abuse but also from hunger, poverty, diseases and vices. This is the aim of Committed Communities Development Trust (CCDT), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), based in the heart of Bandra at Chapel Road. “Every Child Counts” is the vision followed by the members of CCDT, as they have been striving to help children and women since 1990. Till date, they have provided food, clothing, shelter, education, counselling, legal support, documentation, health treatment, life skills and much more to over 570 children right from the age of 2 to 21 years and above. Children in need of help Most of these children are HIV/AIDS positive, orphans, homeless while some are either physically or mentally challenged or have psychological trauma. At present, over 35 children between the age group of 2 to 12 years are being nurtured at Ashray Shelter Home, opposite Bhabha Hospital, Bandra. Once these children turn 13, they are shifted to Ankur-Asmita, their shelter home at Badlapur for girls while boys are moved to Aakaar Centre at Khandala. In addition, when these teenagers turn into young adults at 18, the girls are shifted to Transit Home at Badlapur & boys to Umang Home at Mahalaxmi till the age of 21. After 21, some children are later integrated with their parents or extended families. While, some have now turned into independent adults who have completed their education, have decent employment & are living on their own or sharing an apartment with the other youth. Missing Children Over 109 children have been rescued in the last month from CSMT railway station by CCDT workers along with the police force. In an initiative to help missing and runaway children, CCDT started the National 24 hours free Child Helpline 1098 for children in need of protection from exploitation and abuse.

We also do a complete health check-up of these children.” In a recent case, Poddar mentioned they found a suspicious woman who was trafficking children to make them work into the sex trade. Poddar said, “When we first questioned the woman, she told us she had an agency which provided domestic employment to girls. Later, she revealed she was trafficking them to ultimately indulge them into prostitution. We filed a complaint with the police and rescued the girls.” This programme is now initiated across all railways stations of Mumbai. CCDT aims to work with the police to extend it to other parts of India.

Development vs Environment - Opinions of Bandraites Aarey - the colony is spread over 16 km2 (6 sq mi) & is located off the Western Express Highway. Reports of Indian Researchers & Government Agencies recognizing that the land comprising Aarey had a forest like characters. The trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses, herbaceous (nonwoody) plants, mosses algae, fungi, insects, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians & microorganisms interact with one another & with soil, water & minerals to make up what may be called a forest[1]. Existence of forest in Aarey was recognised way back in the year 2001. However, it came into limelight with the realisation that destruction of 3,000 trees would result when the construction of the Metro-3 car shed by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) would commence. The plot selected by MMRC is not densely planted & a dense forest exists in other parts of Aarey. The matter was already before the National Green Tribunal & in 2018 it ruled that Mumbai’s Aarey cannot be declared as a forest. The metro work continued, clearing all legal impediments. On October 4, 2019, the Bombay High Court dismissed the various petitions to declare Aarey Colony as forest & refused to stop the felling of more than 2,500 trees for a metro car shed project. Immediately the same night around 1500 trees were cut down for a Metro car shed. But the saviour came when the Supreme Court of India ordered that no more trees be cut in Mumbai’s Aarey for-

A resident of Bandra on a condition of anonymity opined that development is needed & the metro project is the need of an hour for people’s convenience. Moreover, the resident also said that when the palm golf was been made many years ago hundreds of trees were cut down. The common man, especially the high-class elite people had not objected the said palm golf. The present objection is baseless because the said project via the Aarey will mark development for the State. Another resident of Bandra – Fredrik Vaz who is a senior citizen said that there has been a lot of debate on whether Aarey is a forest or not so as to justify the cutting of over 2000 trees. The fact is that this city is slowly dying due to severe pollution. Hence, he feels it is criminal to have cut the trees. The alacrity with which the trees were cut immediately after the High Court ruling, has not been witnessed on any other occasion in his 64 years in this beautiful-turning ugly city. Can the authorities first tell us as to the number of trees which have survived only 3 years after they were planted in recent years? And has the location where their trees will be planted been identified? Would it help Mumbai if the trees are planted in Surat?

Do we need Elections?

India spends millions of rupees on space exploration, while its citizens are starving and living in deplorable conditions. Our politicians have betrayed the trust of the nation. The recent attack by terrorists in Pulwama, killing 44 Jawans has shown how unsafe we are. Terrorists are walking around freely in the cities & it is only after a bomb goes off in some market place that the police, government and ministers wake up to find what went wrong. Our rail network has also become an unsafe mode of transport for the citizens of the country when periodically accidents are taking place causing death and injury to commuters across the vast land. Now, very soon the general election

for the Lok Sabha & few State assemblies will be held. Parties are gearing up with forming alliance pacts because nobody is sure of a majority & why is this so? The answer is people have lost faith in the governance. Either the Ruling Party will be booted out by a landslide or it will not show the same result as was in 2014. As a republic, we have been having elections for the last seventy years. The result of this public expenditure has not benefitted the nation as was expected. It has generated a lot of black money that should have been spent on the development of healthcare, education, proper infrastructure, sanitation, housing, transport & decent living standards. What we have received is the betterment of our political parties and living standards of their representatives, who have looted the country & stacked away millions of rupees in overseas banks. Every defense deal whether it is the Bofors gun or Rafael jet fighters or Augustland Chopper, it’s all the same & mired into shady deals that are debated in parliament for decades. Except for the Defense Minister, all other middlemen and CEO’s of companies are paraded in front of TV cameras to show the public how honest the real crooks are. People are tired of this tamasha government.

We don’t have to go deep into the state of affairs of the nation when here in Bandra itself the situation of our infrastructure is so bad. During monsoon it’s the never-ending saga of potholes, flooding of low lying areas & complete halt of the transport system, putting millions of commuters into inconvenience. BMC comes up with quick-fix solutions that are temporary & only fit for shifting the blame or trying to walk away or rather shy away from their responsibilities. It has earned its reputation of the worst managed corporation in Asia. Even without monsoons, the condition of Bandra roads is so bad that bikers & cyclists are risking not only their lives but also of pedestrians. It has become a practice to repair roads & gutters either before the monsoons or just before the elections. This goes to show that our elected representatives are only interested in working for votes & publicity. In India, we have world-class airports

Pehchaan-a Kya? We are living in an age of hyperactivity. An age of multimedia, social media and plenty of unwanted media. We are all so connected and ironically so unconnected! Most of us are staunch advocates of the Epicurean philosophy of eat, drink and make merry, are we not? This also finds a connect with John Masefield, who exhorted us to laugh, for the time is brief, a thread the length of a span. Sure, time is short, we have to make the most of it. Does that mean we have to enjoy ourselves and not care a fig for others? Can we not also stop and think about these people for a change? Thankfully, there are some good people (amongst the many I’m sure), who’s generous hearts beat for social causes and upliftment of the have nots. Four such selfless ladies who readily come to mind, are Dolly Sachdev, Lata Kotia, Shilpa Chadha and Geeta D’Souza. In their fledgeling years, the one factor they had in common, was that their children were studying in Beacon High School, Khar. These dashing mothers had many occasions to meet during their PTA meetings. These very PTA interactions first harnessed the inherent potential in them leading to the germination of Pehchaan. After all, life for this dynamic quartet was not just about attending kitty parties and indulging in idle gossip. No, they were born for far greater things! A woman is the nucleus of her family and society at large. Positive women make for a positive society. Pehchaan is an initiative to connect women from different walks of life to network, share, learn and engage in meaningful social endeavours. Pehchaan not only recognizes the indispensable role of women but gives women a voice to be heard, from various platforms. The programs of Pehchaan aim at reconnecting a woman with herself and her surroundings through self-expression and self-affirmation. They are thus encouraged to share their talents by through poetry, music, dance and drama. The journey of Pehchaan began in 2009, touched by the grace of Celebrity Ambassador and dignitary member Smt. Waheeda Rehman coupled with the vision of the aforementioned four dynamic ladies, Geeta, Dolly, Lata and Shilpa. Smt. Waheeda Rehman initiated purpose to the party by encouraging women to change the way they shop and to eliminate the use of plastic bags. She also initiated an extremely doable act of switching off the electric mains in homes on Sundays, between 7.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Hopefully, this movement to reduce carbon footprints will catch on. Pehchaan has taken up many social

and environmental causes like the Go Green initiative under the initiative of VERNA and an informative seminar on waste segregation and management. The erstwhile Radio Jockey from the Times of Prasar Bharati, Late Smt. Rama Bawa had graced many Pehchaan occasions with her poetry- a talent she had long buried within the confines of her lonely life. By her admission, she looked forward to sharing her poems and lovely insights with her Pehchaan family. Led by dynamic Pehchaan member Savita Kakkar the ladies once staged a modern musical based on the Ramayan which was entirely scripted, directed and enacted by them. Pehchaan even showcased a ramp walk for senior ladies, which they graced with confidence and panache proving that age is only a number and dreams have no expiry date. Pehchaan aims at adding value and touching many layers and elements of a woman’s life. Hence Pehchaan invites eminent speakers from different professions like doctors, motivational speakers, life coach and healers, nutritionist, beautician and yoga experts to name a few. Pehchaan provides a launchpad for many women entrepreneurs through its annual Diwali exhibition and fundraiser. The Diwali exhibition is held at Hotel Executive Enclave, Dr. Ambedkar Road, Bandra. This year, we are glad to announce that another eminent lady Ms Swati Pandey Post Master General Mumbai will be inaugurating the Pehchaan Diwali Diva on October 14, 2019, at 11.30 am. Many home entrepreneurs like designers, bakers, confectioners, artists etc look forward to this annual event which has not only boosted their sales but has made them known faces within a sizable radius. The funds from the sale at Pehchaan are dedicated towards a chosen cause - viz funding a washing machine for Desai Hospital at Santa Cruz, raising funds for a school van for Sangopita a residential school for special children at Badlapur, are just a few of the laudable initiatives. Pehchaan is an essence of self-expression within a meaningful social circle hence the tagline ‘Rediscover Yourself’. It connects one’s leisure experience with self-growth and self-development. Every year Pehchaan strives to expand its reach and is now taking baby steps towards building a more inclusive and socially responsible society. Rajan Vailankanni celebrates Silver Jubilee Way back in 1992, three young lads from Rajan, Bandra; visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Vailankanni, in Chennai. Filled with devotion, they felt a desire to bring back a statue of Our Lady of Good Health. They kept it at Hill Post Apartments, Shery Rajan. On 8th September the statue was carried in a solemn procession and installed at ‘Vailankanni grotto’, where it not stands. Rajan residents met regularly for the next two years, to recite the Rosary. From a mere twenty, the number of devotees grew larger. Then, it was decided in 1994, to form an association called ‘Our Lady of Vailankanni Welfare Trust’. Every year a novena is held before the feast day when the statue is taken round Rajan village in a beautifully decorated palanquin – while the rosary is recited and the band plays melodious hymns. People of other faiths join the celebrations and many share their testimonies of favours granted. Families in and around Rajan are grateful to Our Lady of Good Health for the numerous blessings bestowed and implore her to continue showers of graces on all of us. Robberies on the rise in central Bandra A spate of robberies, mainly in lonely residential areas of central Bandra; have caused concern, especially to senior citizens. Fear has gripped many families, where children are abroad and their aged parents live alone. With today’s concept of living in independent flats, children live separately – making their old parents, easy targets. The economic slowdown is a major factor for the recent rise in robberies. The slum pockets around Bandra, Khar & Santacruz are the main cause and source of robbers, where the ‘have-nots’ envy the ‘super-rich’, from so-called posh areas. They justify their actions, resulting in major law and order issue. Security systems help to some extent but are not fool-proof. Recently, there were 6 robberies around Perry Road, Waterfield Road & Pali Hill, within a time span of 9 hours. Money, gold and household items have been stolen – with a lot of collateral damage. There are trails of injured persons, too – sometimes murders. The Bandra Police are reportedly

taking this trend very seriously, with citizen’s inputs. Some ‘riff raffs’ have been questioned and follow-ups are being done. Citizen’s co-operation and active support will go a long way towards resolving this menace – that can even be life-threatening. We need to have a safer suburb. Sunrise to Sunset: 30 years of Air India’s “Sun Livery” Experiment 15th October marks the 30th Anniversary of the launch of one of the most disappointing exercises in Indian corporate history. That date in the year 1989 saw the debut of a re-branded national carrier, in a disastrous experiment that lasted a little over two years. Having taken place in an age when air travel was not as common as it is today, most people have forgotten that our flag carrier carried for a few years, a livery (colour scheme) that would be almost unrecognizable today. In 1987, the then PM Rajiv Gandhi appointed Rajan Jetley as the Air India’s new M.D. in an effort to modernize the airline. At the time, Mr Jetley was only 37 years old, and one of his ideas was to give its age-old classic appearance a total overhaul. Jetley hired the US firm Landor Associates to give Air India a new image, one that would involve changing the aircraft livery & eliminating its most beloved mascot – the Maharaja. This new livery of the airline involved a gold “sun” motif set on a deep-red sash background. The redesigned logo – “Air India” in the English & Devnagiri (Hindi) script was displayed in a new lettering style on the aircraft fuselage (body). It was decided to unveil the colours to the public on October 15, 1989, in a flypast of Air India’s first aircraft to wear the new colours, the Boeing 747-200 named “Rajendra Chola” & registered VT-EBN.

There was much excitement & anticipation to see the “new look” & so on the morning of October 15th, the “Rajendra Chola” commenced her fly-past along Bombay’s western shoreline, taking off from Santa Cruz airport and following the coast from Bandstand in Bandra, to Queen’s Necklace in Marine Lines. In what came as a shock to experts, the general Indian public despised the new colour scheme & overall look. Most people were appalled at the removal of the old distinctive colours that carried the world-renowned red Rajasthani “jharokha” windows on the aircraft, and the beloved Air India Maharaja character. Airline staff too didn’t take well to the changes. My father, a career aviator and Air India 747 captain, was deeply disappointed at the new look, as were the rest of his colleagues. More importantly, it appeared that the airline management had failed to take into account public opinion and customer sentiments in their efforts to re-brand the airline. Such was the strength of public opinion against the new look of the national carrier, that in just a little over 2 yrs later, in early 1992, it was decided to revert to the old livery of the airline. The old colour scheme of Air India was brought back, as was the beloved Maharaja. In all, 10 aircraft wore the Sun livery over the years. These included 5 Boeing

Air India’s first aircraft to wear the now forgotten Sun livery was the Boeing 747-200 747-200s (VT-EBN “Rajendra Chola”, VT-EBE “Shahjehan”, VT-EBO “Vikramaditya”, VT-EDU “Akbar”, VT-ENQ “Himalaya”); 1 Boeing 747-300 (VT-EPX “Narasimha Varman”); & 4 Airbus A310 (VT-EJH “Tista”, VT-EJK “Gomati”, VTEQS “Krishna”, VT-EQT “Narmada”). Over time, these aircraft were re-painted back into their old colours, giving them their classic look once again. With the exception of old-timers (some from Bandra too, who saw the

fly-past) & aviation enthusiasts & historians, the failed “Sun Livery” is now forgotten. Regrettably, as with most corporate disasters, this experiment came with a heavy price tag. Being a public sector enterprise, this translated to being the tax-payers burden. Sadly, Air India’s “Sun Livery” experiment cost the nation an estimated whopping $35 million, at 1989 prices. There’s a New Vet in Town at Crown Vet! There is a new vet in town at Crown Vet Khar, the veterinary clinic located before the Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana. Crown Vet the veterinary chain, has brought on board at its Khar centre, Dr Madhuri Singh. Dr Madhuri is a highly experienced veterinary surgeon having spent the last 7 years in high-end veterinary practices in New Zealand. She is an orthopaedic specialist and a certified emergency vet from Massey University New Zealand. She graduated top of her class from TANUVAS Chennai and is a passionate animal lover with a drive to bring better standards of care to India.

I was lucky enough to complete my veterinary degree at TANUVAS in Chennai. This university is famous for producing high-quality veterinary surgeons in India. Their training also helped me qualify for the NZNVE, which is the New Zealand veterinary entrance test in my very first attempt. When I consider the differences between India & New Zealand, we are still at a nascent stage. Veterinary care has a long way to go, however, company’s like Crown Vet and similar veterinary care providers are leading the way in introducing better standards in India. This is a very encouraging sign.

What has motivated you to return to India? For me, the motivation originates from the pure emotion of being in India. I love India. I love the people. I love being in this country. I have served for over 7 years overseas and now it’s time to serve here at home. Better Bandra? Dear Reader, This time, October in Bandra has started with sporadic showers and spells of blue skies. With a change of Managing Committee members in the Bandra Gymkhana and other surrounding clubs, will there be some positive change for members? Will the upcoming Assembly Elections, result in a better Bandra? Only time will tell. As an evolving suburb, Bandra is changing at a fast pace. Many improvements can be seen, as our activists are active, pushing politicians and civic officials to do their duty. With the current scenario of campaigning and many switching over to the BJP, it seems that the power play will intensify as D-Day approaches. Both, the Congress & the BJP Candidates are strong in their way.

However, perceptions can be deceptive. Hence, citizens should make an informed decision and vote wisely. Manifestos are full of promises, to woo you. The past performances of candidates are a good indication to influence your decision – when you VOTE on Monday, 21st Oct 2019. Bandra Buzz has interviewed both key contenders to the MLA post. SATA BHAJYUN A traditional Sindhi recipe made on the festival of Diwali in most Sindhi homes Ingredients: · 100 gms each Potatoes, French Beans and Carrots cut into medium cubes · 100 gms Green Peas · 250 gms Cauliflower chopped into medium flowerets · 2 stems Bhee (Lotus stem) cut into 1 inch thick pieces · 4 medium Tomatoes (boiled and pureed) · 2 big Onions finely chopped · 1 inch Ginger finely chopped · 2 Green Chillies finely chopped · 2 tablespoon Fresh Coriander finely chopped · 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds (Jeera) · 1 teaspoon Coriander Powder (Dhania) · 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder (Haldi) · 1 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder · 1 teaspoon Garam Masala · 1 Tablespoon Cooking Oil · Salt to taste Method: · Firstly rinse and parboil all the vegetables (Potatoes, French Beans, Carrots, Cauliflower, Green Peas and Bhee). · Take a thick bottom pan or handi, add a tablespoon oil and Cumin seeds. · Once the Cumin seeds start spluttering add finely chopped Onion, Ginger and Green Chillies. Add salt as per your taste (salt helps cook faster) and sauté until the onion turns golden. · Now add all the parboiled vegetables,

turmeric powder, red chilli powder and dhania powder and mix. · Next, add the pureed Tomato & mix well. · Let it cook until the oil separates and add garam masala, mix it. · Lastly, garnish with Fresh Coriander. Shannon Sequiera is the founder of “Dessertarian” who specializes in custom cakes, desserts and also conducts baking classes at her studio on Waroda road for the past 7 years. COCONUT LADDOO Ingredients: · 2 tbsp ghee · 3 cups desiccated coconut (170gm) · 1/2 cup cream (Amul fresh cream) · 1/2 cup milk · 1 cup of sugar · 1/2 tsp cardamom powder (optional), chopped almonds or pistachio for decoration Directions: · In a non-stick (thick bottom) Kadai add ghee and set on a low - medium flame and add in desiccated coconut. · Stir till the coconut and ghee are well combined, about 2-3 minutes. The coconut shouldn’t turn brown or get any colour. Cook on low flame to be safe. · Add in cream and milk and stir into coconut till smooth and well mixed. make sure milk and cream are at room temperature to avoid lumps. Cook on medium flame till all the liquid has been absorbed by the coconut about 4-5 minutes. · Now add in sugar and stir constantly to avoid the mixture sticking to the bottom, the sugar will release water and the mixture will become loose. · Keep stirring and cooking till all the liquid has evaporated and the mixture leaves the sides of the pan and add in the cardamom powder. It will look like a soft smooth dough. Transfer to a plate and cool for 5-7 minutes. · While still warm, roll into equal size balls and set on a plate. I like to weigh each piece to get equal-sized laddoos. · After rolling all the dough, roll the laddoos in desiccated coconut & decorate with some almond or pistachio. · Keep it at room temperature for an hour to set and get a little firm. And
