ome September and Bandra will once again turn into a noisy, crowded suburb as multitudes of people from in and around Mumbai flock to the Bandra fair. The sound decibel often reaches intolerable levels due to the incessant honking of car horns and the never-ending sounds of toy bugles that rent the air for the entire week. Many residents complain of the dirt and stench that still remain for almost a week after the stall owners vacate the area. “The Bandra Fair week is a nightmarish one for my family,” says Irwin, a disgruntled resident. “My children usually have exams then but they can hardly study with all the noise pollution.” Senior citizens living in the area often grumble that they cannot enjoy their afternoon nap during the fair days. They

don’t dare venture into the fair during this period. In fact, many youngsters prefer to visit Mount Mary church after the fair days to avoid the unnecessary shoving and pushing that goes on. Sometimes, young girls complain of incidents of eve-teasing while visiting the fair. Many people have lost precious belongings like wallets and mobile phones while wading through the crowd. “I lost a costly iphone handset last year on the last Sunday of the fair” says Anto, who was dismayed at the poor level of security provided to the fair-goers. Well, Bandra Fair was not always like this as far as I can remember. When I was just a school kid, I enjoyed the annual visit to the church and the fair. In those days they allowed more time for the prayers and offerings inside the church. The sight of the beautiful statue

of Mother Mary enthralled the pilgrims who were generally more orderly and well behaved. After the church visit, I would walk down the steps eyeing the bubbles, the toys and the channas. I always went home with a balloon, the bubble container and the toy of my choice. In those days our home would be full of guests as relatives dropped in on the way to the fair. There was a special bonding among relatives that happened during this time of year. It was almost magical. Yes, things have only got worse since then and all we can do now is to pray for improvement and hope for a miracle! - Vivek Pereira

Wishing all our readers a Happy Bandra Feast -Bandra Buzz team Strong Winds Of Change Dear readers, September is a special month for Bandraites. It's that time of the year when Bandra is centre-stage to Mumbai & surrounding areas for a week. We play host to family & friends who come from other areas 'out of Bandra'. The Bandra Fair is truly a unique platform where community connect is created at different levels. Ganesh Chaturthi gets Bandra's seafronts in focus – people flock for idol immersions that come in processions – with singing & dancing on the streets. Our Muslim brothers & sisters have just celebrated Eid - a time to forgive & forget those who have done harm to you. Bandra has been very pro-active in the 'War Against Corruption' – with protest candle-light marches across Bandra, to show solidarity with Anna Hazare. Our activists are doing a great job. We have given a point-by-point breakdown of the main differences between the government's version & the people's version – in layman's language. Strong winds of change are blowing across India. Bandra too has been actively part of this 'change process'. How long can the corrupt hide behind outdated laws? How long can the common man pay for the luxurious life of people in power ? How long can we continue to be 'helpless' spectators, while our fundamental rights are being trampled upon ? Bandra Buzz is evolving - outreaching to all communities – empowering, encouraging, warning & informing locals about issues, events & news that matter. Your interaction is imperative to keep us in the loop about what's happening in your neighbourhood. So, do keep writing to us & mailing us on bandrabuzz@gmail.com May Our Lady of the Mount bless you all.

f you’ve ever longed to try a relaxing massage at a spa, but dropped the idea after a glance at the exorbitant prices, you’re definitely going to love this. On offer are more than 20 massages, body polishes, body wraps and facials from around the world. International massages like Aromatherapy, Thai, Swedish and Foot Reflexology rub shoulders with Indian massages like the Ayurvedic and Head-NeckShoulder massage. For the beauty conscious there are facials and body wraps with de-toxifying as well as age-reversal benefits. All therapies are provided in a scientific and holistic manner based on a guest’s needs. A doctor conducts a stress test for each guest and recommends a spa therapy based on the results of the test. The doctor also suggests a suitable diet and exercise plan apart from any lifestyle changes that the guest might need to make. While The Four Fountains Spa is unisex, it follows a policy of

BMC Election Countdown

An Exclusive interview with Asif Zakaria Municipal Councilor to do, because they know what is needed in their area. We have completed many jobs and the maximum roads and footpaths in my Ward have been done. We still have many issues left pending, issues of flooding, like the flooding at Bandra Station. Yes, we have the maximum development in the Bandra Assembly - development of roads & infrastructure in my area. If the credit of development of the Ward has to go to anyone, it should go to the resident's who are actively involved and have participated in all activities. D.M.C. & A.C.P. ( Traffic) meet various residents groups On Thursday, August 20, 2011, various residents groups from Bandra, Khar and Santacruz, headed down to the Deputy Municipal Commissioner’s office in Bandra. The conference room was packed and was an opportunity for representatives of ALM and residential groups to air their grievances and woes caused by traffic problems in their respective residential areas. The Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Kiran V. Ackarekar from Zone III of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai was in attendance, along with Assistant Municipal Commissioner, Manek Kshirsagar. The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Mirza Baig headed the traffic team, along with Senior Inspector-in-Charge, ( Bandra Division ), Mrs. Vijayalaxmi Vettegowda and Inspector Deokar.

infrastructure for these facilities. The general population of Bandra is increasing so much and during my term, I have received many complaints that parking boards are missing – 'No Parking' and 'No Entry' and 'One Way' sign boards have been stolen. In recent times several MLA's have given around two to three hundred sign boards to the Regional Traffic Officer's (R.T.O.) to be installed in various areas. We have had several meetings with the R.T.O. and Resident's Groups and there are various possible solutions being offered, although we try to reduce the problem if we are not able to resolve all matters immediately. Furthermore, the R.T.O., have a limited number of officers and it is not possible to have officers at every nook and corner. On the other hand we have to blame ourselves for this situation and why do we need a policeman to stop us from parking in front of a 'No Parking' sign? We should take responsibility for the traffic problems and we should try and follow the rules and regulations more seriously. We must avoid parking at 'No Parking' places. Also, if citizens can come forward, the R.T.O. are willing to appoint more Citizen Traffic Wardens. There is only one Traffic Warden, Erica, who is always around for schools. There is a lot of traffic and congestion is high around schools in Bandra and it is not going to go away so easily, but, we could have a more systematic traffic plan. We see a lot of traffic congestion near schools. The schools should encourage 'Car Pools' and students using 'School Buses' to ease this growing traffic problem. If the schools inculcated Road Safety Patrols (R.S.P.) or restarted these duties at their premises, it will help with traffic matters around the school and reduce traffic congestion in the area.

The Bandra Talao beautification proposal has been given to the BMC and we are awaiting approval and allotment of funds. The second project, was a massive one and we made huge efforts to clean up Chimbai Beach, which over the years, has been an illegal dumping site for garbage and large quantities of debris washed ashore from the sea. In March, more than one thousand tonnes of garbage was collected and the beach cleaned up. We will be continuing this clean up on a quarterly basis. Our aim: is to restore and maintain the heritage of Chimbai, as it is the oldest Fishing Village or as it is better known as the Koli Village, which has a rich culture and the oldest fishing village in Bandra. Once we clean Chimbai beach, I am sure it will encourage the young and older fisher folk to rediscover their traditional building and repairing of boats, while continuing to make their fishing nets. More than 15- 20 years ago, Chimbai was a popular and vibrant fishing village.

What are your future plans as Municipal Councilor? At this moment I am not sure about my future as my Ward 96 has been reserved for a lady Municipal Councilor and hopefully, my party will find a person who will be able to continue the projects and work started by me. Whatever jobs are in the pipeline and are waiting approval and allotment of funds could be carried out by the new lady Councilor. My request to all citizens is to continue supporting the person leading your Ward, to achieve the best results. I extend my word of 'Thanks' to all the Resident's of Ward 96, for your active participation, which has enabled me to achieve exceptional results during my term as Municipal Councilor. should do what the resident's want us to do, because they know what is needed in their area. What plans do you have for the future of - BandraBuzz team Bandra? Yes - There a few projects I have successfully completed, but, a couple of them have been stalled, due to approvals or budget restrictions. BandraBuzz We undertook two very important projects invites other and I am glad to say we have made excellent progress till date. As this meeting between D.M.C & A.C.P (Traffic) was scheduled for September, but, due to the forthcoming festivals of Ganpati and Bandra Feast looming on the horizon, the meeting was preponed to today. In her opening welcome speech, Shyama Kulkarni, a prominent ALM facilitator and coordinator of the day’s event specially “Thanked” Kiran V. Inter Religious Prayer Service at St. Stanislaus School

Residents of Bandra share their fond memories about the Fair andra Fair reminds me of my school days, When i was studying in St. Andrews High School Bandra. My School used to take the students on one week day to its Mount Mary's and from there to the fair. But this used to be during the morning hours. Later in the evening we used to visit the Bandra Fair with our friends. This used to be our daily affair till the time of Bandra fair. I have visited may fairs in my life, but I have never seen a fair like the Bandra Fair. Bandra has always had a cosmopolitian atmosphere. My regular joint was September garden with different types of stalls, Giant wheel,MerryGo-round, with Housie & other Games Of Luck. Ofcourse I never won anything but playing the same was real joy, I used to visit the ‘well of death’. it used to be such a joy in the yearsgone by. With Hardly any tall buildings then there was enough room for lots of stalls and eateries at every corner. The noise, the music, the rumbling of people, the ‘summer of joy’, it was really a very pleasant and enjoyable event this Bandra Fair. Bandra far was a meeting place for the youth. Bandra fair was a great attraction for people of the country. People from remotest places of the country used to visit Bandra fair and the Bandra fair has gone a long way in putting Bandra in the world map. Bandra has its own culture and identity of which every Bandraite is proud of - and the Bandra Fair is one of it. So if anyone wants to see secular India one must Visit the Bandra Fair. For every Bandraite its a great event and every Bandraite wishes to visit the Bandra Fair with their Family & Friends at least once a year.

On the occasion of Independence Day of India,on Saturday, 13th August 2011, St. Stanislaus High School celebrated “Manavta Hi Hamara Dharm Hai”. This inter religious service was attended by the students, teachers, parents and guests reflecting a serene vision of 8 diverse faiths. Devotional songs, dances and melodious bhajans were a strong inspiration to all present. A pictorial PowerPoint Presentation along with short skits were enacted by many Stanislites teaching values of Humanity, Love, Devotion, Unity, Strength, Peace, Charity and Sacrifice. In a world drowning with corruption, terrorism, inequality and hatred, this get-together imparted a message of social harmony and a beautiful insight reaching out to all ages. Mr. Sheriar our guest speaker mentioned about the Lotus Temple in Delhi wherein tourists from all over the world experience the presence of God. Fr. Jude Fernandes S.J. and Fr. Andrew Rodrigues S.J. concluded this prayer service with a message that we all are children of one God, flowers of one garden and fruits of one tree. The service ended on a happy note with ‘prasad’ being served. - Fr. Jude Fernandes S.J.

he big attraction for me at the fair was the Well of Death. Your eye balls almost popped out as you saw the rider on a bike spinning around defying the laws of gravity. Who can forget the dog show? Or the Magic Mirrors? Remember how funny you looked in some of them. You suddenly had a long nose, big teeth, long ears, an oblong face, and suddenly that fat Sandra from Bandra looked seductive. While that was a lot of laughing matter, the sad part of the Fair was the introduction of wild animals like the lion, tiger on display in filthy small cages. Sadly there were no such animal rights groups at that time to really voice a complaint. But the best entertainment entertainment place of all was….The September Garden now re - christened Carmel Mela. Back then we had the Jam Session held in St. Aloysius school hall, organized by the youth of Mt, Carmel Parish. Entry was a meagre 100 rupees or so and was restricted strictly to couples. Booze was strictly prohibited. So the only way to get through ‘security’ was to ask our girlfriends to smuggle in quarters of whisky and cigarettes in their handbags. You had disco lights and the works, it was the place to be every evening of the fair, with a DJ blasting the latest chartbusters on cassette decks. There were also live bands in attendance at times. There were no strict cut off times, and the party would go on past 10pm, until 11– 11:30pm sometimes, after which we ‘d snake our way to Yacht restaurant for more spirits or beer or continue partying at ‘Rock Around The Clock’ (RATC) at Hotel Metro Palace, the only disco in Bandra at that time. The Bandra Fair, oh how wonderful it was then. - Verus Fereira - Prof. Mazhar Zaidi

T

ome September and all roads in Bandra lead to the Mount, the Mata Mauli shrine that attracts people of all Faiths to the fold of Mother Mary during the festival of her nativity celebrated annually from the first Sunday onwards, for 8days after 8th September. The Basilica of The chapel of Nossa Senhora de Monte, or Mount Mary as it was called, stands on the crest of Bandra hill, 80 meters above sea-level overlooking the Arabian Sea. The beautiful Basilica of the Lady of the Mount has survived years of turbulent times to become a shelter of hope & healing for thousands of all Faiths who flock to the Mother’s feet carrying flowers & candles in their hands & fervent prayers in their hearts. After the church, a visit to the fair is a must for most worshippers. Though the Bandra Fair that accompanies the festival for the duration of the feast has become a regular feature providing fun and frolic to the young-at-heart, it is the spirit of old Bandra manifest in the lanes and wadis of the suburb that keeps the ‘tradition of the Bandra Feast’ alive and kicking! The visitors to the Mount and the fair dutifully visit the homes of their Catholic relatives, friends and acquaintances living in Bandra to catch up on lost times and sample the sumptuous fare prepared for the occasion. The open-house tradition is the hallmark of hospitality, renewing old relationships, creating new bonds and the devotion to Mother Mary is the common thread that runs through the display of this bonhomie. Come September and all of Bandra comes alive with a magic that permeates the very essence of Bandra, the queen of suburbs! - Vera Alvares

Jamshedi Navroz: Parsi Religious Community Celebrate New Year o you ever imagine Mumbai without Parsi’s? In my opinion, Mumbai will be a selfish and sick city. So, I request you all, in honour of Parsi New Year, take a moment to consider the religious community's outstanding contributions to Mumbai. Pateti is also known as Navroz and it is considered to be the holiest festival of the Zoroastrians. Arsis celebrates this festival by going to their worshipping place called as ‘Fire Temple’ or ‘Agyari’. The name itself suggests that they worship ‘fire’. Jamshedi Navroz means the Parsi New Year. Parsi New Year was named Navroz after the lagendery King of Persia, Jamshed who made the Parsi Calender. According the mythology of Parsi, this world is created on the Navroz day mean spring. On the occasion of New Year celebrations of Parsi every one greets each other. Parsi meets near and dears with full joy and they wear the new cloths. Parsi decorates their gates and entrance with coloured powdered and lighting them. There is also a tradition to give food to the poor on Parsi festival. Parsi’s are members of a small religious community that exists largely in Mumbai.

Navroze, the Parsi New Year, will be celebrated on the first day in September, this year. On the occasion of the Parsi New Year, on the first day in September, Mumbai can thank its endearingly Parsi populace for a few of our favourite things. On the auspicious occasion of Navroz Pateti, Good wishes to all our Parsi brothers and sisters. May this festival reinforce our commitment to synthesis, harmony and goodwill towards each and everyone! New Year begins, let us pray that it will be a year with a sense of new Peace, newly found Happiness and an abundance of new friends, God

Bless you, throughout the New Year! During the New Year Parsi people place auspicious items on the table which set for the day of celebrations. Some of the very scared items kept on the table are – picture of Zarathustra, book, mirror, candles, fruits, incense sticks are burnt, flowers, goldfish in bowl, bread, sugar and some coins. Paris customs for New Year believe that these items symbolize prosperity and longevity. The Paris people love preparing cuisines and the New Year celebrations is not complete without the special feast prepared for the entire day. Persian New Year celebrations

include preparation of sweet ravo and vermicelli items. For lunch people make Pulav (rice item) with lots of nuts and saffron. Fish is the main cuisine for this day. Parsi people enjoy having spicy items and most of the non-vegetarian food items are very spicy. On the new beginning people visit shrines and specially the Fire Temple of Agiary to offer prayers. This thanksgiving session is called ‘Jashn'. People throw sandal wood powder on the holy fire and it is important to keep their heads covered with traditional cap, when performing this Parsi ritual. Skywalk At Bandra Plunged Into Darkness

he Skywalk in Bandra (w), beginning from the railway station to north & south bound ends, along the Swami Vivekananda Road, branching out at the junction of Lucky Restaurant & Hotel, have been plunged into darkness. Currently, the Bandra skywalk has the most footfalls – as per a survey taken by MMRDA two months ago. Bandra is fondly known as the ‘Queen of the Surburbs’ - but what is this? During the last 3 weeks at the time of going to press – the skywalk, in this prominent & crowded junction of Bandra, where pedestrians seek comfort from the chaotic traffic during the day & night, has become a

T

playground for eve-teasers & small time criminals. Furthermore, the skywalk is a battle-field for the elderly, women & children, for whom safety is just a word & in actual fact has been thrown to the winds. The skywalk enabled pedestrians to avoid the difficulty of crossing the roads, especially during peak hours, where the traffic jams occur & cause a hindrance to them. Even pedestrians or male chauvinists are kept at bay, form assisting those in times of need & those who know they could confront these miscreants, tend to avoid the elevated walk of safety against the errant drivers & traffic in the area. Surely, even a brave-heart

will avoid getting himself into trouble with these big time crooks or make an effort of ensuring the safety of individuals, at night. Pedestrians, often see young urchins with their mother or father or both parents, shacked up at the top of the flight of steps, sometimes a couple of young boys run alongside the elderly & women, harassing or even snatching whatever they can lay their hands on, in a swift swing of the arm. Now & again they will eve-tease young girls while they pass by or throw a half lemon from the skywalk, which lands on the head of pedestrians or falls in front of them. Where are the personnel of MMRDA, who feel they have done their job – just as many companies who sell their end-products & never offer the after sales service they pledge with all sincerity when they cajole individuals to buy it – when they built the skywalk, in Bandra. For the record, the Bandra east to west skywalk has a total of 1,90,478 footfalls & MMRDA does not seem inclined to have a round-the-clock check or even a security check, once in a blue moon! Where are the police & local Municipal Corporator’s & MLA’s in & around the Bandra Assembly? Currently, ambitious plans are in the offing for MMRDA, adds additional arms to the present Santa Cruz skywalk – connecting Vakola & Swami Vivekananda Road within the next quarter of this year. The question looming over the horizon, do they have any safety concerns for the pedestrians especially elderly, women & children who could be some of their own family or friends stuck in it? Do they have any plans to facilitate the handicapped or elderly to enable them to climb the skywalk? The need of the hour is the power for the lights of the skywalk immediately! - Pooja Menon

The Jan Lok Pal Bill What it means to you and me - a point by point scrtunity Existing System

System Proposed by Civil Society

No politician or senior officer ever goes to jail despite huge evidence because Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) and CBI directly come under the government. Before starting investigation or initiating prosecution in any case, they have to take permission from the same bosses, against whom the case has to be investigated.

Lokpal at centre and Lokayukta at state level will be independent bodies. ACB and CBI will be merged into these bodies. They will have power to initiate investigations and prosecution against any officer or politician without needing anyone permission. Investigation should be completed within 1 year and trial to get over in next 1 year. Within two years, the corrupt should go to jail.

No corrupt officer is dismissed from the job because Central Vigilance Commission, which is supposed to dismiss corrupt officers, is only an advisory body. Whenever it advises government to dismiss any senior corrupt officer, its advice is never implemented.

Lokpal and Lokayukta will have complete powers to order dismissal of a corrupt officer. CVC and all departmental vigilance will be merged into Lokpal and state vigilance will be merged into Lokayukta.

No action is taken against corrupt judges because permission is required from the Chief Justice of India to even register an FIR against corrupt judges.

Lokpal & Lokayukta shall have powers to investigate and prosecute any judge without needing anyone permission.

Nowhere to go - People expose corruption but no action is taken on their complaints.

Lokpal & Lokayukta will have to enquire into and hear every complaint.

There is so much corruption within CBI and vigilance departments. Their functioning is so secret that it encourages corruption within these agencies.

All investigations in Lokpal & Lokayukta shall be transparent. After completion of investigation, all case records shall be open to public. Complaint against any staff of Lokpal & Lokayukta shall be enquired and punishment announced within two months.

Weak and corrupt people are appointed as heads of anti-corruption agencies.

Politicians will have absolutely no say in selections of Chairperson and members of Lokpal & Lokayukta. Selections will take place through a transparent and public participatory process.

Citizens face harassment in government offices. Sometimes they are forced to pay bribes. One can only complaint to senior officers. No action is taken on complaints because senior officers also get their cut.

Lokpal & Lokayukta will get public grievances resolved in time bound manner, impose a penalty of Rs 250 per day of delay to be deducted from the salary of guilty officer and award that amount as compensation to the aggrieved citizen.

Nothing in law to recover ill gotten wealth. A corrupt person can come out of jail and enjoy that money.

Loss caused to the government due to corruption will be recovered from all accused.

Small punishment for corruption - Punishment for corruption is minimum 6 months and maximum 7 years.

Enhanced punishment - The punishment would be minimum 5 years and maximum of life imprisonment.

BEWARE of Bogus Cops or Wardens Earlier in the month of August, a Warden in the Pali-Khar area took it upon himself to pull motorist over to the side of the road, in the area of 17th Road Khar and extorted money from them. As soon as complaints reached the Bandra Police Station, Senior Inspector Samuel Shaikh rushed to the spot. Robert Julius Fernandes ( aged 37 years), a warden in the area was arrested and taken into custody for further interrogation. Incidently, Julius was arrested for the same felony five years ago on the same charge, but was later released on his personal assurances of good behaviour. Residents are hereby warned to beware of bogus cops or wardens and should contact the nearest Police Station to lodge a complaint.

Boy Oh Boy ! Hyperformance Cars in your neighbourhood your Stomach Churns … when the fuel burns !! In recent years, in and around Bandra the traffic is ever-increasing and during peak hours horrendous. Likewise, apart from one having to dodge potholes of various magnitudes, the road rage of rickshaws and cars are equally a hassle 24x7x365 (or 366) and traffic jams are part and parcel of life in Bandra. However, in spite of all this when one sees a car, which is a limited edition or one of the latest launches of foreign origin, one tends to stand and gape at them whether they are a Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Nissan GT-R, or Mustang ShelbyGT500, On the other hand, how do you control a bunch of trigger-happy, throttle-hungry motoring journalists when they are looking for a story? Make them participate in a mile race around the block and your stomach churns … when the fuel burns! Today, it could be another reason if you see one of these cars whizzing past you near or around your home if you live in Bandra. Boy oh boy! … you have Hyperformance Cars Pvt Ltd. in your neighbourhood. Most of you could have guessed it right by now and yes, all this is possible because you have Alberto behind the steering wheel of one of these many cars and Hyperformance !!! A simple and ambitious, yet trustworthy young man, Alberto Bestonso is of Anglo-Indian and Italian mix and has his roots firmly planted in Bandra. He completed his schooling at St. Marys High School, in Mt. Abu and graduated from the prestigious St. Xavier’s College. Since, his childhood, Alberto always had a flair for fashion and a constant craving for good food and expensive tastes but felt education was not the end thing of it all or his life though he was an ‘A’ Grade student. Furthermore, since his childhood, motorbikes and cars were his passion, his mum after much deliberation, bought him a Honda LA Custom, Easy Rider. That’s when Alberto’s career took off, when he decided to venture out and he fully chromed and restored his motor-bike. During his college days, he was in possession of a fleet of motor-bikes, which ranged from 600 cc to 750 cc to 900 cc and 1,000 cc and then later contemplated going into buying, selling and maintaining automobiles. Alberto soon took the plunge and married but, continued to devote his time to his passion, He was fully engrossed in the garage he started near Milan Subway, 20

years ago and as time passed, Alberto had the urge to move his Company to Bandra. Incidently, Alberto, has obtained many of the first production cars world wide, which he has imported into India, ranging from the first Ferrari 599 GTB to Nissan GT-R and lots in between. He is not afraid of the unknown and is fond of challenges, so embarked on yet another ambitious venture, when he launched Hyperformance Cars in the U.K with his younger brother Lorenzo, where the company deals with exotic and pretty much anything that has a branded name in the motoring world, like Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini and Porsche etc. When asked about the red Ferrarri, Alberto, said ‘The yellow logo on the steering wheel reminds you that you are in the sanctum sanctorum of cars’. The one question that people everywhere ask, is which car they should buy? With a plethora of choices, it is hard for people to make up their minds and I cannot blame them, he continued and that is why Hyperformance Cars are here to stay and offer friends and customers an opportunity to buy and sell cars, while offering a very high quality of maintenance and after sale services. Located at the end of St. Paul’s Road, in the heart of Bandra, Hyperformance Cars is one of the most High-Tec and High-End Workshops, with the latest, state of the art Equipment from all over the world and a highly trained and passionate staff ‘The Sky is not the Limit’. An Orange Encounter : “Alberto, multi-talented and a master of his trade, is a car designer who flexed his muscles when he undertook an Orange Encounter more than a decade ago. A close friend, Suchitra Pillai, (VJ, model & actress) When it comes to cars, a yellow Porche is the object of her dreams, but, till she buys one, an orange Esteem is the set of wheels in her life! An owner of an old Esteem for years, ‘I thought of getting it remodeled only after an accident’, said Suchitra. It was then that Alberto suggested that I could do something different with it. Alberto fitted it with an aero-dynamic sports kit, which comprised of the front and rear bumpers, bonnet and side skirts although, he did not do anything dramatic with the engine he added a free flow exhaust system, shaved and ported the head. Festive Fervour

Devotion To Ganesha Beyond Baba Siddique hosts Iftar Party India - Ganapati Bappa Morya! with Pomp & Fanfare

hese pictures are from one of the largest festivals in India - and probably the world - the Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganapati Festival. Ganapati is an elephant headed mythological Hindu God. Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak (Freedom Fighter and statesman) started to unite people, for freedom against British Empire which was ruling India in 1893. Today, it is celebrated in public places, apartments, homes, schools and trains. Ganapati festival 2011 started on Thursday 1st September & the emersions took place the same day, after one and a half day, after two and a half days, after five days, after ten days and after eleven days or after twelve days. This is the first year that the Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganpati Festival and the Bandra Fair or as it is popularly known as Mount Mary’s Feast, at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, in Bandra, coincide. Ganesha (Sanskrit: गणेश), also spelled Ganesa or Ganesh, also known as Ganapati (Sanskrit: गणपति), Vinayaka (Sanskrit: विनायक) and Pillaiyar, is one of the deities best-known and most widely worshipped in the Hindu pantheon. His image is found throughout India and Nepal. Hindu sects worship him regardless of affiliations. Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains, Buddhists and beyond India. This statue of Ganesha was created in the Mysore District of Karnataka in the 13th Century. Although he is known by many other attributes, Ganesha's elephant head

T

makes him particularly easy to identify. Ganesha is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles and more generally as Lord of beginnings and Lord of Obstacles (Sanskrit: विघ्नेश), (Vighnesha Vighneshvara (Sanskrit: विघ्नेश्वर), patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom. He is honoured at the beginning of rituals and ceremonies and invoked as Patron of Letters during writing sessions. Several texts relate mythological anecdotes associated with his birth and exploits explain his distinct iconography. Ganesha emerged a distinct deity in clearly recognizable form in the fourth and fifth centuries CE, during the Gupta Period, although he inherited traits from Vedic and pre-Vedic precursors. His popularity rose quickly, and he was formally included among the five primary deities of Smartism (a Hindu denomination) in the 9th century. A sect of devotees called the Ganapatya, (Sanskrit: गाणपत्य), who identified Ganesha as the supreme deity, arose during this period. The principal scriptures dedicated to Ganesha are the Ganesha Purana, the Mudgala Purana and the Ganpati Artharvashirsa. The festive season is here! And who better to celebrate it with than the King Khan himself. Bandraite, Shahrukh Khan spoke about the importance of Eid & a few nostalgic memories of the festival. He also revealed the songs that would feature in Ra.One and asked his fans to enjoy Ganpati too. - Vishnu Mhatre

he fourteenth day of August 2011 was another special day in the Muslim calendar and during their Holy Month of Ramzan (Ramadan). All roads led to the gates of the Mehboob Studio,at Hill Road, in Bandra. The buzz in the area was that a grand party was being hosted at the premises. At sundown the cars rolled into the Mehboob Studio driveway & well reputed dignitaries and a cross-section of society were seen headed for the hall where the Iftar Party was being hosted by Baba Siddique, MLA, in Bandra Assembly Constituency. All the invitees were personally greeted at the entrance to the hall, by Baba Siddique himself. The proceedings began with prayers and followed by Iftar to everyone seated in groups at banqueting round tables. Those present included individuals who were strictly veg &others who were non-

T

vegetarian, but, everyone enjoyed a sumptuous buffet set for an audience of royalty. The Iftar party was held with pomp & fanfare fit for kings. A thorough gentleman by nature, Baba Siddique was constantly on his feet and throughout the evening was seen shuttling from table to table, ensuring his distinguished guests were enjoying their Iftar meal & enquiring whether they needed any additional or special service. This of course, was taken care of by the stewards, who in my opinion did an excellent job of waiting at the guest’s tables. It was an entertaining evening to remember and as the guests thanked their host for the extravagant evening & waved goodbye as the saying goes, till we meet again, As we departed the party hall, we saw Baba Siddique finally sit down with his close associates to break their fast and enjoy their Iftar. - Julian D’Mello

he Eagle Brigade is the third eye, which acts as the support system to the government and assists in the detection and prevention of street crimes, at Bandstand and along the stretch of B. This Eagle Brigade assists in the area by the powers given by the police. They are people who are honorable, dignified and reputed and nobody can just join the Eagle Brigade, especially with the intention of using muscle power or for extracting money from resident’s and passers-by or any modus activity. Hence, the Eagle Brigade is there only as a support system and to create a fear factor within the locality, to keep criminals at bay and let them know that someone is watching them. Santosh Chaurasiya the leading spirit behind S.S. Spirit Sports Club BandraBuzz, congratulates you on completing 10 years of your sports club. In a short conversation with the man behind the success of his sports club - Santosh Chaurasiya highlights & shares his thoughts on achieving his dream of giving youngsters an opportunity to showcase their talent in sports by organising instant rink football tournaments in Bandra single handed with just the support of a few friends from his neighbourhood. David Vaz caught up with him at the finals of the annual rink football tournament Here, he shares his vision with our readers: How do you feel about these 10 years journey of your club? “We are successful because we were born to achieve our goals.” These 10 years were a learning process for us, with so many ups and downs, but we organised the games, no matter what the conditions were. Our club & friends were just a strong back support for me. After each tournament we recieved positive responses - that was our achievment. Why only football? All communities like to play this game. With making one united team,in less time its more about unity, co-operation & the biggest thing is time management. After each goal self respect is created & the excitement is lasts till the end. When did you start organising such tournaments? In the year 2001, I started my tutorials. At that time my students wanted me to organise some event for them and their friends. So we finally decided to start with a football tournament. That year only 6 teams participated with colourful jerseys & the full ground became a football zone. For us it was a cheering time and a good begining. How did your organisation get the name S.S. Spirits Sports Club? S.S. Spirits means “Shraddha Saburi Spirits,it stands for faith and patience spirits . We got this name from the great spiritual Guru Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi. After all we need faith and patience in every game. How did you get more club members? When we started at that time my students and friends helped me to organise rink football tournament and people started to join us every year . We got good contacts from leading clubs of Bandra and all my friends & students came to help & join us without getting anything in return.

How many teams participated for this years tournament ? This year we organised under 12 for girls and boys. A total of 56 teams came out of which 48 boys team and 8 girls team participated. Now, what is the next plan of your organisation? We want to organise tournaments on a bigger scale and try to organise events in different local areas in the suburbs, for promotion of the game which teaches us about unity , co-operation and dedication. - David Vaz

KRIPA’s- musical concert rocks Andrew’s auditorium n yet another auspicious day, the 65th Independence Day of India, our motherland, all music lovers were headed towards St. Andrew's Auditorium. Most of those headed there were friends and supporters coming together to celebrate three decades of selfless service with a global healing presence, at which the Kripa Foundation, presented a live Musical Concert, that featured a galaxy of outstanding talent! Under the patronage of His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Mumbai, the Kripa Foundation, has reached the ripe old age of thirty. Another milestone was reached by the collective efforts of those associated with the Trustees and in celebration Pearl Anniversary – 30yrs, from nineteen hundred eighty-one to twenty eleven of Kripa Foundation. On Monday, the fifteenth day in August, a galaxy of stars, both young and old, were brought together by the musical pied piper, Flex Flor, in yet another scintillating and memorable toe-tapping evening, in which the Live Musical Concert rocked St. Andrew's auditorium. The Chief Guest of this live musical evening of celebrating the three decades of Kripa Foundation was Rev. Fr. William Whittier – popularly known as Bill – Kripa's Ambassador in the West. It was and added honour to have Rev. Fr. Bill in our midst, as he himself reached another milestone in his Priestly life. 50 Godly years in the Priesthood, an achievement that carved a niche for the golden boy Rev. Fr. Bill, who celebrated his Golden Jubilee as an Ordained Priest, in June this year. The galaxy of musicians enthralled & regaled the crowd that packed in auditorium for this annual fund-raiser of Kripa Foundation. The mix of specially selected songs & toe-tapping – even sans the blue swede shoes – musical notes hit the auditorium with resounding effect & most were at the edge of their seats – at times probably wishing a dance floor was laid out in front of the stage. The singers were led from the front by Fr. Joe Pereira, Flex Flor and his daughter Frederica, Keshia Braganza, Allwyn Cabral, Suzzanne D'Mello, Shannon Donald, Leon D'uza, Milburn Fernandes, Geeta Hinduja, Sharad Jagtiani, Douglas & Gary Misquitta, Neale Murray, Dr. Victor & Dr. Peter Rodrigues, Rohan Sequeira, Michelle Silveira, Brian & Bradley Tellis and Brett Rodricks. They were ably supported by musicians Anibal Crasto, Nikhil D'Cunha, Christopher D'Souza, Dalen & Douglas Misquitta & Benjamin Fernandes. The glamour to the star-studded event was spiced up by compere's, versatile Brian Tellis and gorgeous Annabelle Ferrao DeSylva, both who added a punch line now and again, with just that touch of class, keeping

O During this time when all the final year students are busy preparing for their board exams the students of St. Andrews College TYBMM (Delia D’mello, Renelle D’souza, Jolyn D’sylva, Tracy Gonsalves & Larissa Pinto) are trying to make a difference on a topic that has been stressed on for years but not many pay heed to. We therefore plan to make a change one step at a time starting within our college by starting the ‘Don’t Drink and Drive Campaign’ known as ‘Bottle or Wheel’. Through this campaign we not only plan on making drivers aware of the hazards of drunken driving but also the common youth. The central theme of ‘Bottle or Wheel’ is that “friends don’t let friends drink and drive”. Even if you’re not eligible to drive or if you don’t have a license, you may have a friend who does,so you can play an important role by keeping your friend safe as well as the roads. Posters have been put up at various youth hangouts & a few eateries around Bandra. - Renelle D’Souza

Nature Yells St. Josephs Convent had taken us students, to this tremendously enjoyable trip to the Bombay Natural History Society (B.N.H.S). Our school being government oriented never fails to show us what true education is; it has offered us what we students will be tomorrow. The Bombay Natural History Society is one of the largest non-governmental organizations in India, engaged in Conservation and Bio-diversity Research. It has 2 education centers and 42 research centers in India. It supports many research efforts through grants and publishes the Journal Of The Bombay Natural History Society. Nature is yelling, at the crack of its voice. But who else can hear it, except the B.N.H.S. It has truly displayed its ever growing-respect towards our down shadowed nature. The different types of fairy-tale mushrooms,high-aspiring birds, morning-rising flowers and hard to reach trees, were simply amazing. We are truly honorable towards the success that we owe to the B.N.H.S. They have never been let down even when no one was, at a point of time ready to relate to nature and give in their best to save it. In fact they would reach out to nature’s destruction. The B.N.H.S were the ones who guided us to the right path & brought our country the true wining success it always deserved towards natures success. This massive stretch of beauty was found on 15th September 1883, 128 years have passed since this gorgeous place has been in existence. It is located in Goregaon, a spacious landscape for the true lovers of Nature! Here you can bring out your regard, your compassion and love for nature, don’t fail to show it. We need people like you to be tomorrow’s nature rescuers. - Anushka Dutt

the audience in splits of laughter. The flair of dancers, Nateshwar Nritya Kala Mandir Troupe and Neeta Bawa, Baijul Mehta, Karishma Bhambra, Gyatri Acharya, Rakshita Shetty, and Aabha Huddar was added incentive to the evening's entertainment. In an exclusive interview with Bandra Buzz, Fr. Joe Pereira, Trustee at Kripa Foundation, had this message, “It was a day of very special Blessings! Thirty years of selfless service by Kripa. I salute, first & foremost the recovered addict – that is the power of Kripa who like a wounded healer has gone all over the world, making the Lord's healing presence felt. All over the country, also, in a very big way, I want to acknowledge Alcoholics Anonymous, that have called me in, to be their Class 'A' Trustee and because of which we are teaming up to make the presence of this healing grace available to the remotest parts of India – like Nagaland, Sunimoto, Mokokchung and in Bareilly the Archbishop is helping me. There is an avalanche of people really waking up to respond to the suffering of an alcoholic or an addict. Another thing is that the younger generation that is being afflicted by this neo-rich culture. In Bandra, very specially, as I mentioned in my sermon in the morning, a lot of our families are afflicted & really do not know that their children are on drugs. They keep telling their parents that weed is not a drug and marijuana is okay. But, that is a tragedy that these are the gateway to drugs and they are making big inroads into our community. Within the Bandra community, especially I am looking forward to some special significant celebrations in Bandra, that are going to support this work, I have an inkling of this, that the people of Bandra want to do this. The Bandra community wants to do something about this menance. Today, was a Blessing, as I said and Julio Rebeiro with us was a tremendous presence. He, together with R. H. Mendonca, Shivananda and with the present Joint Commissioner of the South Zone, Naval Bajaj, form our new guiding board and acknowledging their silent support for the last thirty years. The programme was very crisp, it started at quarter past seven and ended at nine forty-five at night & it was a very well conducted program and I want to say a special Thanks to Felix Flor for doing this. I want to say a special Thanks to all the Doctors, starting with Nikhil who was at the keyboards and who accompanied me,Dr. Victor Rodrigues & his brother Dr. Peter Rodrigues,Dr. Christopher D'Souza. It was lovely to be there, with a lot of family feeling. The crowd was just the kind of people who care for the work I am doing, God Bless them all and I am looking forward to another bright and fruitful year for Kripa!” - Julian D’mello

Govinda Aala Re at St. Stanislaus Gokulashtami / Krishna Janmashtami Festival On August 22nd, 2011, all over Maharashtra Janmashtami or Dahi Handi was celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm with the culminating in an adventurous, yet dangerous (due to rains lashing the city) event of “BREAKING THE MATKA Clay pots, known as Dahi Handi! These clay pots are filled with butter, curds and money & the pot is hung in a convenient location and height, prior to the event though the height varies, depending on the prize money offered at each location. The adventurous young and old Govindas boys and men forming the human pyramid upto eight or nine levels. Several groups from the local areas compete with eachother to reach the pots and break them open with a coconut. While this is being done, the onlookers throw water on those forming the human pyramid, in order to prevent them from breaking the pot or discouraging these young boys from going higher to reach the pot. The significance of Gokulashtami or Dahi Handi festival is a celebration of representing Lord Krishna’s love for butter and curds, food he enjoyed eating at all times. As the story goes, Lord Krishna was very mischievous and would take curd from peoples’ houses, so the housewives hung their pots of curds high up and out of his reach. But, that never deterred Lord Krishna

as he gathered his friends together and climbed up to reach it. With traditions playing an important role in the lives of Stanislites for over one hundred and fifty years, this year was no different, as students participated in the Gokulashtami or Dahi Handi festival with pomp & excitement at St. Stanislaus High School, in Bandra. In its 9th year of celebrations, of this revered festival, Stanislites were entertained to a day of human pyramid climbing and pot breaking, on the school grounds. Students from Class V to Class X participated in making a human pyramid of upto four levels to ensure no student was injured in any accident or fall. The first Dahi Handi was broken by Omkar Sawant, a fifth standard student – quite to the astonishment and amazement of all the bystanders. Another Dahi Handi was broken by a Tenth standard student, Kedar Wagh. While the boys tried forming the human pyramids, the teachers & students kept throwing water to deter boys from climbing higher. With the spirit of Lord Krishna instilled in them, the boys never gave up and successfully broke two pots - Another entertaining day enjoyed by teachers and students, strengthening bonds outside the classrooms. - Shivprakash Pandey & M.H.Charania

“GRACENOTES”– The Quintet

“Gracenotes”....…the name is surreal, the image evokes celestial harmony synonymous with choral music performed with grace and sensitivity for the occasion. True to its name, this ensemble of women has uplifted many a congregation with its wide repertoire of engaging nuptial music ranging from hymns that are joyful and robust to those that are ethereal and spiritually moving. They also have a repertoire of soulful and contemplative music for memorial services. The brainchild of Marie Paul, much loved soloist in Mumbai music circles, “Gracenotes”, a quintet of likeminded and experienced choristers, evolved from a group that sang gratis for weddings to the professional singers they are today. Anne-Marie Rego, Raynah Braganza, Beryl Pinto, Rosemary Pires and Marie Paul enthusiastically agree that it has been an exciting and exhilarating journey of experimentation, inspiration and self-discovery, and they’ve loved every moment of it.

HOMECOMING Like a flower unfolding to the sun Like a race waiting to be won Like food to a famished child Like a fire raging wild …Is your homecoming to me. Like trees in a gentle breeze Like tall grass as it heaves Like birds as they flock Like a key into its lock …Is your homecoming to me. Like night that follows the day Like sun upon the hay Like a calm before the storm Like coffee to keep you warm …Is your homecoming to me.

“We are in the process of completing our third season” quips Anne-Marie Rego. “We started as a small group of Bandra housewives, drawn together by our love of music and we felt we could use our spare time productively for the community. We rehearse in the afternoons, after we’re done with our household chores”. She elaborates, “Singing is now our business and we believe the quality of our music speaks for itself”. The response to their music has been astounding and rewarding and provides them with all the incentive they need to practice till perfect. Gracenotes has been invited to sing in Mumbai churches through the year, from Colaba to Marve, with business peaking during Christmas & New Year. If you are looking for a professional ensemble at a nuptial service or contemplative music at a memorial service, you may rest assured that “Gracenotes” will provide that gentle touch of class for the occasion. (Enquire at Cell No: 9819464992 ) - Beryl Pinto Like a gong is to a bell Like water in a deep well Like fish that need the water Like atoms that make up matter …Is your homecoming to me. Like bees are to honey Like spring brings out the bunnies Like rain to the scorched land Like fingers to the hand …Is your homecoming to me. Like sight is to the blind Like thoughts in the mind Like you and I together In all kinds of weather It’s YOU … coming home to me

The 23rd UASC All Bandra Inter-School Road Races

On the 21st of August over 800 children woke up long before the sun rose and gathered on the streets of Bandra. This wasn't a political protest - instead it was the Annual Bandra Road Races. Organized by the United Athletes Sports Club, school children from 25 schools in Bandra participated in this massive event. The races themselves were spread over several age groups, with the distance of the race relevant to the age group. For the 9th year, Mahatma Gandhi Vidhya Mandir came away with top honors by bagging both the Girls and Boys Championships with a tally of 175 and 117 points

respectively. At the end of the race all children were given a packet of biscuits and a cold drink to quench their thirst. What was really remarkable about the races was the amount of children that came out, in spite of the rains over the last few days and how enthusiastic and pumped up they were. These races evoke a great spirit of competition and well as teaching children the importance of exercise while inculcating a spirit of sportsmanship. - Sean D'Mello

Vishnu Prasad in car # 22 had a great start & managed to pull away from the pack from the first lap. Behind him, Ajay Kini moved into second position with Rahil Noorani & Oshan Kothadiya battling closely for 3rd position. Vishnu extended his lead to 8 seconds before the safety car came out on the seventh lap as Polo R Cup rookie driver Varun Das toppled over in one of the tricky corners of the

track, which had many wet patches. Vishnu managed to keep his lead at the restart and cruised to victory with Ajay and Rahil finishing behind him. Thrilled with the result, Vishnu Prasad said, “Starting from pole position was always going to be an advantage - and I am extremely happy with my race pace today. It is always nice to win in these conditions & these are very vital points at this stage of the championship. When the safety car came out I thought that I would lose my lead, but I kept a cool head & maintained the lead. So far it is turning out to be a good day for me.” Ajay Kini commented “It was a little difficult to adjust to the track since there were a lot of wet patches but I managed it well. Since I missed the first round, my intention was to score as many points as I could and I am happy to be on the podium. “ Prithviraj Siddappa, Head of Motorsports, Volkswagen India said, “It feels great to be back at the Irungattukottai Race Track. The track proved to be challenging for the rookie drivers as it was a new experience for them but they managed to stay calm and put up a good show.
