Volcanic eruptions expected at Bandra Gym Elections 27th September 2015 is going to have many defining moments for members of the 79 year old Bandra Gym, situated on St. Andrew’s Road. This year the election scenario is incredibly different. There are allegations, insinuations & promises being made. Imagine, Café Delite, Balaji & various coffee shops have interludes of heated conversation revolving around the BG elections. Social media has hate messages floating. Yes, this time the opposition is stronger & proactively wooing members to vote for change. Yet, the present managing committee team still have their die-hard supporters. The countdown has begun. The Trustees are 3 eminent personalities Ajit Rodrigues, Darryl D'Monte & Roger Pereira. Standing for President: 1. Godfrey D'Mello 2. Trevor Fernandes & 3. Ladislaus Pereira. Standing for Managing Committee: 1.Li-
onel Athaide 2. Gordon Athogiaus 3. Leon Curzai 4. Leo Dharmai 5. Julian D'Mello 6. Ryan D'Monte 7. Mark D'Sa 8. Warren Fernandes 9. Denita Gomes 10. Cornel K. Gon-
salves 11. Christine Menezes 12. Austin Pereira & 13. Basil Pereira. The morning programme will start with the AGM – where a PPT. will highlight the ac-
tivities and other points of the previous financial year. The voters will be East Indian members only – as per the indenture, which embodies the covenants; that govern the constitution and administration of the Bandra Gym. This time, the number of actual voters are expected to be higher – as campaigning is already at an enthusiastic pitch. For the past several months, the spicy gossip about several Bandra Gym issues makes interesting listening at the cafeteria, bar & restaurant. The beverages help to iron out any inhibitions. When things get personal, you can expect a storm of animated discussion – leading to an argument. The build-up has begun – with volcanic eruptions expected on election day. It is all coming to a boil. Tempers are rising as competition is fierce. The moment of truth will be announced later in evening. Dramatic scenes can be expected. The results are anybody’s guess. HERITAGE STEPS CONVERTED TO CAR PARK RAMP
BEFORE
AFTER
Above: Heritage steps converted into car park ramp at Pali Village On Sunday morning, 6th September; one more slice of Bandra’s heritage at Pali Village was covertly changed. Around eight hired workers put rubble and stones on the steps – and added a cement layer to make a slope road ramp, without permission. As the neighbours were busy, they had little or no opposition to this illegal ramp on a public road. When, someone reported to a cop in that area, his reply was, “What is your problem?” The next day, a car was conveniently parked on the slope. Senior citizens find this slope access unsafe. The steps opposite IMPPA House were constructed many decades ago, to gain access from Dr. Ambedkar Road to the Gaothan houses below. There are several such steps. This is all part of Pali Hill . The height difference between Dr. Ambedkar Road and the road leading to the village houses is approximately two storeys. During the monsoons or a drain leak, water
trickles down – making it damp and slippery. Therefore there are several connecting steps. This is the second stepped access to be illegally converted to a slope. As parking space is always a problem, people are trying innovative means of creating them. New people are getting bolder to take law into their own hands. Even the gutters on both sides of the steps have been filled – creating a drainage problem. On learning about this, Adv. Shane Cardoz, NCP General Secretary – Bandra Taluka & Meraj Husain, NCP President – Bandra Taluka swung into action. The AMC – H (West) Ward has been sent a letter, requesting to demolish the illegal ramp, built by Tasneem Shah. Follow up is expected from the BMC – and not to allow such cases to be a precedent. Restoration of the original steps should be taken ASAP. Pramod Mane
Arnab Goswami at Bandra’s Top Media Centre
12th September saw award-winning journalist & world-famous news anchor Arnab Goswami, right here in Bandra West; to attend CommFest 2015 held at SPICE, off. Turner Road. It was a huge success and the mood was set by the one and only Arnab Goswami - who, as the keynote speaker, was literally on a roll for one hour. Bandra got a shot in the arm. For almost 40 minutes, he did what very few can do – completely hold the attention of normally distracted 19 and 20 year olds – with a rousing speech on youth, media and democracy - and why he “does” journalism the way he does. And he proved yet again, that the general perception – like
him or hate him, you cannot ignore him – is completely accurate. When we asked a prominent faculty member the reply was, “We are still trying to cope with the deluge of students, who want to attend. It is so nice to have a problem of plenty. So welcome Arnab. PS: this is just the beginning of the interesting line up of notables who will be coming to our campus to talk to students. At St Pauls, remember we deliver.” Just imagine the impact this speech has made, on young budding journalists. The future of Indian journalism will surely shine. Maya Kakodkar
Are you burdened with difficulty? Facing a tough situation? Or feeling like ending everything? Then, “Hold On… Don’t Give Up”, says Tejburi Goswami, a young enthusiastic prodigy, who lost both his legs in a train accident yet, today manages two stalls at Linking Road, Bandra. Walking with two artificial fiber limbs only till the knee, he works at these stalls everyday right from 10am - 8pm, travelling all the way from Santacruz on his cycle. Life is uncertain! At the young age of 20, while returning from his native place, Tejburi met with a train accident and lost both his legs. His family was totally shattered and he was completely traumatised. Due to financially poor background, he started his treatment at his native place. Facing many odds, struggling from one hospital to another for treatment, fighting with society’s non acceptance and waging a war against his own self, he finally got artificial fiber limbs made from a charitable trust. He vividly remembers, “When I took my first step in these artificial limbs, my whole body vibrated. I trembled with fear and fell flat.” It was a tough game for him at the start for after 20 years of walking normally on two legs, running around and roaming to different places with friends and family; Tejburi’s life suddenly had become slow, stagnant and confined to a single place. There were number of times when he felt like giving up and considered all this effort as a waste of time. Sometimes, he cursed the fact that he survived. Until one day when he saw, a middle aged man without legs, walking with the help of supporters. And he recollects that moment, “I saw him and asked myself - If he can walk then why can’t I?” And this decision transformed his life. From that day he walked on his own in his artificial limbs; gaining support of the walls, holding things around, falling several times yet getting up and continuing every time! His
will power was beyond apprehension & he never turned back to his past. Today, he handles two stores, has a wife, travels on his special cycle and also uses public transport. He has appeared for his HSC exams and is sure of bright results. He wishes to study further and aims to gain a government job. He is open and firmly willing to work anywhere and do something great. He says, “If I get a job, I will do it, be it anything! The government should provide special job opportunities and facilities for the handicapped so that we can make our living independently.” An inspiration that questions all of us having all our body parts intact and healthy, he testifies, “Suffering teaches you a lot! Unless you yourself decide to do something, nothing is going to happen. You want to live your life; then you can live it the way you want it, come what may!” Ronald Rodrigues

RAKESH MARIA TRANSFER The unceremonious transfer of Rakesh Maria from the post of Mumbai’s Commissioner of Police raises a set of serious questions. It came at a time when the 1981-batch IPS officer was steering the investigation in the Sheena Bora murder case towards crucial financial dealings possibly linked to the crime. The investigators had put together a team of chartered accountants and Economic Offences Wing officers to probe a complex web of shell companies, and requested the Enforcement Directorate to follow the money trail. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis signing the transfer order just before leaving for Japan reinforced the impression that the government did not want Mr. Maria to proceed with the probe. Though the Home Secretary explained that the transfer was deliberated over two to three weeks and had nothing to do with the fact that a high-profile figure was caught plotting the murder of her own daughter, the timing was clearly wrong. Mr. Maria was due for a cadre promotion on September 30 following the retirement of two senior officers. That promotion was advanced
by 22 days, while he was effectively shunted out from the murder investigation. Moreover, appointing Ahmed Javed, who is one batch senior to Mr. Maria, to the post of Commissioner of Police, and then asking Mr. Maria to continue “monitoring” the Sheena Bora case as Director-General (Home Guards), has created a situation where two DG-level officers, who have not been in the best of terms with each other, have been put in charge of a high-profile case. Though Mr. Maria has indicated that he wouldn’t resign, his “punishment posting” amounts to dissuading him from pursuing the case in the right spirit. Such ad hoc measures point to the malaise of the political class seeking to exert control over police officers & playing a game of favourites. Given the power and prestige that go with it, the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner is a coveted one. There have been legal battles over it. A cumulative effect is that the Maharashtra Police are now top-heavy: there are seven posts of Directors-General, of which four, including that of DG (Home Guards), are insignificant, non-operational postings. In order to end adhocism, eliminate lobbying for posts and make top-level appointments the outcome of collective decisions, a Police Establishment Board was set up. However, Mr. Maria’s transfer was not referred to the PEB, & the government used its discretionary powers. Only time will tell what impact this reshuffle may have on the investigation into the Sheena Bora case. But the message the transfer has for Dinesh Kadam, the investigating officer at Mumbai’s Khar police station where the case is registered, is far from encouraging. Bhagwan Thadani

Pilgrimage to Mount Mary’s Basilica
Bandra Buzz > Campus
A pilgrimage to Mount Mary’s Basilica was organized by the BIRD Committee hosted by St. Joseph’s Convent High School, Bandra on 11th September, 2015. The pilgrimage is the brainchild of Fr. Magi Murzello. This BIRD event was started last year in which all Bandra schools participated. The pilgrimage began from St. Joseph’s Convent High School at 8 am. 32 schools from all over Mumbai participated in the pilgrimage. Around 2300 students and teachers walked to the mount reciting the rosary, praying and singing devotional songs. They prayed for peace, communal harmony and unity in India and the world. The pilgrimage en-
ables our students across schools to collaborate, deepen their faith, enhance communal harmony and pray for a safe environment. The main celebrant was his eminence bishop John Rodrigues. The mass was concelebrated by ¬a number of other priests. Pope Francis in his letter - named Laudato Si’ or “Praise Be to You,” says that God gave humanity dominion over the earth so it is our responsibility to save the earth. Students carried placards inspiring people to protect the environment. Students were very happy as they felt that they have done their part to awaken the citizens on the importance of saving the environment and promoting peace and unity. CarMa is back
CarMa, organised by The Management Society of Thadomal Shahani Engineering College, is one of the city’s foremost annual youth conferences. With renowned events such as the TM MUN, Quiztacular and Talkathon, the conference strives to provide a unique platform to showcase the best and brightest minds from across the nation. Originally conceived more than a decade ago as a convention that provided counselling and training for those looking for career guidance, CarMa has imparted skills necessary for a successful life and career, including teamwork, public speaking, salesmanship, general knowledge and logic, to a wide array of students over the years. Short for Career Management, CarMa features a number of events. While Quiztacular, simply put, is one of the largest quizzing competitions in the city, the TMMUN is a three-day simulation of the world’s foremost organisation on peace: the United Nations. In addition, CarMa also features regular events such as The Amazing Race, Talk-a-Thon and Stockmania. Last year, CarMa was one of the largest literary festivals in the country. Quiztacular 2014 had contestants racking their brains for the prestige of being crowned winner, as well as cash prizes of Rs. 35,000. The committees of TM-MUN 2014 hosted delegations from all around the state and
saw the most ardent of debates. Talk-athon, an Asian parliament style debate, featured some extremely passionate debaters who battled it out with the most logical and empathetic view points. All in all, 2014 saw a CarMa that was, like its predecessors, a fusion of character, growth and recreation. This year, CarMa 2015 will be hosting youngsters from different parts of the nation to test their wits and illustrate their talents. TM-MUN 2015 will be hosted at the Bandra-Kurla Complex and will consist of a number of engaging committees. While Classic Jam, Talk-a-thon and Quiztacular will remain eminent competitions of the conference, this year will also convene fresh and stimulating erudite events. The Amazing Race is essentially a gruelling race all across Bandra which has the contestants out on the ultimate treasure hunt. Other events such as the One Hour Job, Stockmania and the Science of Deduction promise to make the entire conference a brilliant learning experience. With a plethora of literary events, CarMa guarantees to provide a podium where one can experience and explore a diverse range of careers as well as discover and hone skills. Most importantly, CarMa is a theatre for experimentation on career choices and an experience that reengineers lives.
Why Swiss Education is better than their Hospitality? Switzerland, the things that one can imagine, is the Alps, the Scenic land scrapes, watches, chocolates & let’s not forget the excellent hospitality that the country is famous for. Not only is Switzerland famous for its hospitality, it is also birth place for formal Hospitality education, making it the best place for hospitality education. It's also a country who earns a large portion of its income from tourism, as it has been ranked as one of the best places for tourism. The number of tourists visiting keeps increasing each year, the number in 2014 is a staggering 89,67,000. So what makes Swiss education so unique and one of the most sought after degrees in the world, while 60,000 or 21% of the students in Swiss universities are international students, the number applying each year keeps on increasing thanks to the great quality of education provided. As per studies conducted for international educations some universities in Switzerland are among the top 20 in the world. The ancestry of Swiss resident’s traces back to many different countries that explains the cultural diversity. Switzerland provides the unique opportunity to sample life across Europe in just one tiny country. Of course, Switzerland’s central location not only makes it the best country for hospitality studies, but it’s also easy to see these theses tourist and business destinations for yourself with minimal travel time and expense. In fact, you get a schengen visa that allows you to travel to 25 other European countries without the requirement of another visa. In, Switzerland hospitality and MBA courses are conducted with a compulsory internship, as both the courses are such,
that employers prefer candidates with experience. Swiss education solves that problem, a half yearly internship, compulsory each year i.e. the course pattern is 6 months of study and 6 months of internship, with a minimum stipend of 2168/Swiss Francs (Rs. 1,60,000/- approx.) each month. This helps the student recover more than 40% of the fees that he invested in the college, plus gets him the required experience, when applying for a job. It's one of the only courses in the world that give the student an experience while studying, which in turn helps students get placed as recruiters no longer see them as fresher’s. Internship in all departments also helps the students make up their mind as to which department they will like to make a career. The culinary arts program is, one of the unique and sought after programs in Swiss, drawing applause's from across the world, for creating some of the best chefs in the world. Colleges in Switzerland are generally based on 5 star properties which help the student have a feel of working and staying in a hotel right from the start. Plus the international placements that are provided by the Swiss colleges add a cherry to the cake, most of the students get placed at destinations like USA, China, Dubai, Honk Kong, France, Germany, etc. Aliff Overseas Consultants is one of the largest student recruitment companies of India helping many students to get higher education in Switzerland. Farmik - Seven minutes from Farm to Factory
The new concept for a milk shop or dairy, its more a milk boutique or parlour which sells dairy products ranging from raw and flavored milk to milk based sweets, paneer, butter, curd, ghee, shrikhand, kulfi, falooda and anything else that I may have forgotten, which also has a table at which you can sample products and buy whatever you like. This Farmik store I visited is located at Bandra Talao near the the Sahakari Bhandar, its white washed walls with high ceilings a center wooden table the focal point of the store where you can stand and sample some of the products or just grab a quick milk snack before rushing to your next appointment or chore. The store was
well light with day-glow bulbs and the natural light coming in from the glass walls and door of the store just made me want to stand there for hours, sampling their products. The concept of the “Milk Bar” has been around Australia, New Zealand, England and Scotland for over fifty years now. The concept began as an alternative to pubs. In fact a campaign in the UK has installed milk bars in schools to encourage children to consume dairy products, hoping that if milk products are packaged attractively and can preserve their quality, then children are more likely to buy and have them. FARMIK aims to provide wonderfully tast-
ing products, without compromising on quality, hygiene, and in attractive packaging which follows the concept of the European Milk Bar. FARMIK is a family run business, the family was previously wholesalers for supplying milk to milk retailers, as they have their own buffalos and stables and their milk processing factory located in Goregaon, Mumbai. Scrumptious food is in season at all times and within the reach of every hand with Yorrick’s Cookhouse and it’s many delights
Yorick Garrad & Savio Fernandez
The Classic Chicken Burger
In the beginning was an idea Food is our common ground, a universal experience. - James Beard
crumbs or croutons. Also, since we make it, we minimize wastage by making just the right quantity.”
What happens when three childhood friends; a chef, a marketing guy and an IT guy, get together to share a drink? Sounds like the beginning of a joke? Well, it’s more like the beginning of a dream journey. Because that’s how Yorrick’s Cookhouse came to life in a charming by-lane of Bandra. Cooked up by Yorick Garrad, Savio Fernandez, and Sunil Fernandes, the cookhouse dishes out some of the most relishing burgers, pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, salads and more that one can savour. “We were a couple of friends who grew up together and lived down the road from each other. Over the years it was just an idea we were throwing around because everyone had their own careers. But last year, we put our heads together and everything finally fell into place,” explains Yorick.
Value for pocket Not cheap without reason, nor dear without value. - Afghan Proverb
Setting up First we eat, then we do everything else. - M.F.K. Fisher Yorrick’s Cookhouse serves a vast and tasty menu. But how did they come up with the dishes? “Well, the menu can all be chalked down to each of our experiences around the world. We’d always see these huge burgers abroad and when we came home, people were always confined to McDonalds, KFC, etc., which served a smaller fare. People would talk to us about burgers they see on TV and how you don’t get them here. So that’s what we did. We took that concept of ‘big’ and brought it alive,” says Sunil. Secret Sauce? Hunger is the best sauce in the world. - Cervantes In the few months of being open, the quality of food hasn’t wavered and neither has the quantity. Is there some secret ingredient that keeps things so fresh? Well, in a way there is, but it’s not so secret. They just bake their own bread! “Yes you heard that right,” exclaims Yorick. “We began by outsourcing our breads, but never got the consistent size or quality we wanted. We finally fixed on a recipe that worked for the bread we use and we’ve stuck with it. We have designed the bread in such a way, i.e. with no preservatives at all, that it can be consumed the next day or used later to make bread-
When one talks about the price of food at Yorrick’s Cookhouse, one can’t help but realize that their prices are spot on. It’s like they took into consideration what being a customer is all about and then priced things accordingly. “We want to serve good quality food, and that comes at a price. We fixed on the kind of costs that fit in with our quality,” enlightens Savio. Their food might add to the luxury of your waistline but definitely doesn’t take much away from your pocket! Deliver us from hunger People will travel anywhere for good food - it's crazy. - Rene Redzepi Most people worry where good take-out joints deliver till. For those who live within Bandra and Khar, Yorrick’s Cookhouse delivers literally everywhere within that topography. ‘We Deliver Where You Are’, is their motto. So you could be enjoying the sunset at Carter Road or walking the promenade at Bandstand or just chilling with friends on the wall down your road, when hunger strikes, call up Yorrick’s and eat where you are. Packing it right Food should be fun. - Thomas Keller Yorrick’s Cookhouse doesn’t just believe in serving great food. They also back it up with a great packaging system, all well thought out for the foodie on the go. Their burger boxes serve a two step purpose. One is that the boxes hold the burger tight and not let it go places before reaching the customer. Secondly, they open up into a plate and make things less messy for eating on the go. As for the pastas, well anyone will tell you that their portions are really big and many people are unable to finish it in one sitting. Hence a microwaveable, reusable, and tightly sealed pasta box! Eat how much you can, put the box with the remaining pasta in the fridge, and then reheat it when you require. These boxes are become so much a part of the cookhouse’s signature that people are known to drop by to ask
specifically for the boxes, while others wash and collect these boxes to store sweets and other food items. It’s all very eco-friendly and makes eating from here so much more worthwhile. Selling hunger People who love to eat are always the best people. - Julia Child A good brand always sells itself, and more so with great food. Working with this, Yorrick’s Cookhouse realized early on that friends and word of mouth was the best way to kick things off. “While we are tied up with Zomato, we have relied on people to pass on the word about our place. And Bandra being the close knit community that it is, it has really worked for us,” elucidates Savio. “We told people to taste our food & then tell us what’s their take on it. We have received quite a few reviews personally. We take it all positively and use it constructively to improve on ourselves. It’s led to many people coming back for more. Their word of mouth method of marketing seems to have worked well for them, especially with a video being created on their food when the beef ban came into effect. “The video came about by chance,” laughs Sunil. “We didn’t ask for it. A couple of people sat down, thought about it, took our approval, and made it. It was more about not getting beef in the market, and a person craving and begging for beef.”
Tuna and Egg Salad Looking ahead There is no sincerer love than the love of food. George Bernard Shaw Those who have partaken of the various items on the Cookhouse’s platter want to know if a sit down restaurant is in the works. Take away places are fun, but eating out is more so. “We aren’t going to say when, but it is on the cards,” they clarify mysteriously. One would think that with such a vast menu, there might not be room for more food. But Yorick, Sunil, and Savio have plans for more. “We now want to target the vegetarian market, as it’s a big space to cook for and we don’t yet have much to offer them. We want to create vegetarian dishes to savour that customers won’t feel is just something thrown together.” Bandra is already populated with eateries. So why should you come here for your first, second or third helping and keep calling for more? Three focal reasons - the size and quantity for one, the quality for another, and thirdly, the price. “And us of course!” enthuses Yorick! Working for years together in an event company, Vincent quit his job when recession hit the market. He highlights, “We lost our clients and there was no work at all. I was getting paid for doing nothing. So, I stepped out and decided to start something of my own. Not knowing head or tail of cooking, Vincent admits honestly, “I didn’t even know how to boil water, but I knew that the food industry
has good money. And moreover, I observed that people wanted to eat good quality stuff, homemade stuff which was tasty and healthy! All that Vincent had was his gang of friends so; they all chipped in to put up a food stall at Bandra Fair last year. Damian says, “We sold homemade Goan and East Indian food items as all of us in our friends circle cooked some specialty. As business has its own ups and downs, they suffered a loss of Rs 40,000 at Bandra Fair but, they didn’t give up! Later, Vincent rented a place at Chapel Road and today they have made a place not much in the market but, surely to a great extent, in the hearts of Bandraites. Vincent jokes, “Inc. stands for - Is Not Cheap referring to the quality of his food. Damian and Vincent claim, “We believe in giving good quality food. Lot of people crave for homemade food which not only fills their stomach but also reminds them of their culture. We give that taste of culture and touch of simple delightful quality. So, if you have party orders, want to grab a bite of Goan food, want to relish the essence of East Indian Masala or simply want to eat good quality healthy stuff then step on to Chapel road and have a chilled out time with the chilled out Vincent at Friends Inc! Bandra Buzz - Saved in Bandra The True Story of the Ordeal of a man name Ali
Bandra Buzz > Change

Ali Shaikh was walking down the road in Kurla on his way to get a new job when faith turned a ugly turn, Ali was hit by a truck, the truck driver rushed Ali to Bhabha Hospital (Kurla) where he was denied entry as they were ill equipped to treat a case as his with the severity of the injuries he sustained, from Bhabha Hospital he was rushed to Sion Hospital where immediate treatment saved his life. However that was not the end of his nightmare, a week into his stay at Sion Hospital, a doctor one that Ali could only describe as tall, fair, wearing a t-shirt and jeans and aged between 30 and 36 came to Ali and told him that he could not treat him and that since he had no one with him he would have to leave, the doctor proceeded with the assistance of another man to put Ali in a wheelchair and told him that if anyone asked to say that he was going in for an X-ray, taking Ali down to gate number 7, the doctor called a cab and putting Ali in it told him to go, Ali pleaded that he did not even have any money, to which the doctor went and returned in a little while with a 50 and gave it to Ali and insisted he go and then left. By now the taxi ill itself was 30 rupees. Fortunately for Ali a little earlier a claims agent that was helping Ali in his case had loaned Ali rupees 300 which would save Ali's life. So as the cab started to reach the gate the watchman asked Ali for his discharge papers, Ali told the watchman that the doctor did not give him the same nor his x-ray reports or any other documents and reports, with that the watchman did not allow Ali to leave telling him to go get the papers from the doctor, but told the cab go, Ali barley able to move with his injuries waited at the gate till the end of the watchman's shift and then hailed a cab and managed to get to Bandra, there he went to Bhabha Hospital but due to not having anyone he was refused admission, he spent the night there and the next morning he with some assistance entered a rickshaw and made his way to a NGO food centre, there he met me. On seeing the extent of his injuries and hearing his story I contacted the Bandra Buzz, thinking we would need the assistance of the media on this one given the nature of the case and seriousness of his injuries, Merck the Editor of the Bandra Buzz came and we then got Ali admitted into Holy Family Hospital, there he received immediate medical treatment and underwent an operation the following morning, he had come in with a large portion of his frontal thigh missing and his arm badly wounded and elbow joint shattered with surgical pins sticking out of it with a fever and in a lot of pain. Later at Holy Family Hospital I was asked to make an MLC (Medico Legal Certificate) as the case was an accident case, and for the MLC I would have to travel to Kurla police station as the accident happened in Kurla, there I met a 2 star female police inspector named Shadivan and related to her the whole event, after which she told me that she was

the officer in charge of the case and then brought out Ali's case file, she further told me that the police did go to the hospital (Sion) to get the medical certificate but were told that the patient had ran away. I told her that from the time he was admitted into Holy Family he was in bed and could not have possibly ran away, then I got Ali on the phone and the two spoke and Ali brought her up to speed on what had happen to him. Back at the hospital we appealed for aid from social services but despite getting a ration card copy with great difficulty, the charity commission insists on a proof of income certificate which has to be gotten from a Tehsildar, this saw me travel to Kurla and Vidhya Vihar to only find the process involved a lot of travel and forms etc, with multiple stops between Mulund and Vidhya Vihar to and fro, etc, Ali's bills so far came to well over a lakh and but God's grace we received generous help from the public for the same with Ali undergoing 4 operations till the 12th of Sep and Ali's condition has greatly improved, Ali has still got a long road to walk in his recovery and other mountains to climb like getting the compensation from the truck company which would take about 6 months to a year, then the question of would he see the doctor that led him outside taken to task or would time and those in authority ignore and choose to forget the injustice done to him. Ali is ever grateful for all the help, support and well wishes he has received and thanks everyone's collective efforts, he now has a lot of pleasant memories too that he can look back on too besides all the ill that befell him.

‘If you want to bring about Change then BE the Change!’ And, Link Road Stall Owners Association, have taken this mantra very seriously. Now, when you walk through Linking Road, Bandra you will see less of traffic and more of free space. The always overcrowded roadside shopping area messed up by congestion due to hawkers; is now clear, spacious and free of hawkers. Now you can shop in comfort with much breathing space and without any worry. But how did all this happen? Who cleared the hawkers? Is it the higher authorities or the BMC? Well, it is rightly said – ‘Change begins with you and in you’. So, 83 licensed stalls right from the Patwardhan Park opp. R.D. National College till K.F.C. have begun this initiative for change. These stall owners who are members of the above association have together hired 15 bouncers - 10 female & 5 male to avoid any hawkers in that shopping patch. These bouncers are on surveillance on this patch right from 1pm 9pm everyday to maintain security and reduce chaos. As there are 10 female bouncers, they help in protecting the women crowd from eve teasing and maintaining public security. And all this is done politely & in a healthy way since 1 month. Amin Surya, senior member of the Linking Road Shopkeepers Association, says, “We always received complaints of eve teasing, pick pocketing, theft and congestion from our customers due to the chaos

created by hawkers selling their stuff in front of our stalls.” The stall owners wanted to give their best service to their customers so they met the official authorities of that area and the MLA, Adv. Ashish Shelar. With their support, the stall owners have started this initiative. Due to the constant watch of these bouncers; overcrowding has reduced, traffic has reduced and incidences of pick pocketing have completely stopped. What is noteworthy is that each bouncer is paid Rs. 10,000 per month and this money is chipped in by the stall own-
ers. In addition, the stall owners have also hired sweepers to constantly keep the area clean. The stall owners have not waited for the BMC or official authorities to improve things but they themselves have taken the law in their hands to take the first step. Mr. Amin claims, “We understand the situation of hawkers. Even they are doing business just like us. So, they should be given a place where they can carry out their business instead of crowding an already crowded area. The government should allot a specific place for them.”
In just one month, around 500 hawkers have been cleared by these bouncers. Roads are much cleaner now, traffic is fast moving, there is more breathing space and shopping is quite sorted. Employing female bouncers is also a way to empower women to stand for their security by maintaining public security. Mr. Surya urges everyone, “If this idea is implemented in other parts then things will improve and Mumbai will be much sorted and less chaotic.” Ronald Rodrigues

Starring Diva at Creative Platforms Rozzlin Pereira A.K.A ‘Aunty Maggy’!!!
A charismatic emcee, talented writer, proficient director and profound actor of Bandra, Rozzlin Pereira, inculcates in herself the dual role of ‘Aunty Maggy’! Excelling in several platforms, Rozzlin, previously wrote, directed as well as acted in a comedy play: ‘He Says, She says’, performed at NCPA and Canvas Laugh Factory where, Alyque Padamsee (Veteran Ad film maker and Theatre personality), remarked - 'The play was fantastic. A laugh a minute show.' He appreciated Rozzlin's acute observations of the sexes. Emceeing at many occasions from launches of brands to award ceremonies, Rozzlin, incorporated commercial modeling for brands like Compaq Presario, Snack Pack, Dabur Amla Hair Oil, Reliance Mobile and Maruti. Besides anchoring for a reality gaming show "Vixture" for Star Sports, she even played the lead role in a kids show called "Sanya" aired on Hungama and Disney channel. It comes as no surprise that she has recently started her addictive YouTube channel: ‘ROZZcity’ from quirky rap songs to sketch comedy and even interactive vlogs.
With the 'quintessential Bandra Aunty' character, Rozzlin is on roll with her entertaining character series named ‘AUNTY MAGGY’. Viewers are falling in love with this next door Bandra Aunty who makes people laugh as well as think, with her unique perspective and quirky take on things. Aunty Maggy is just the character you wish to watch when your auto-rickshaw fellow is driving you mad by not taking you to your destination! She tips you to click a photo of the meter and let pandhupadhosi inspect rickshawala's behavior! Aunty Maggy has the answers to all your Bandra problems! Like, subscribe and comment to get your answer… On her YouTube channel, Rozzlin wants all her content to resonate the same vibe 'It ain’t about appearance, there is more to life than that; snap outta this obsession, think fit and not fat!' Claiming that there is no need to overwork with yoga and weight loss cycles to have a perfect body, she believes- perfection is ‘health’. She draws elevation from her mother as the reason for what she is today! Enjoying the little bubbles of life, Rozzlin focuses on finding satisfaction through live, online, television and film streams. She further dreams to stage her own musical production!
Fearing to dream big just like some of us, Rozzlin once thought that riding to planet ‘Success’ using a skyrocket was irrational! However, she managed to always do what she loves. Today, her approach has changed and she aims on putting wholehearted efforts to step up the ladder, trusting herself to succeed. She says, “Dream about the things your heart aspires, for it keeps you light and excited. Every part of that journey is fun and gives you a sense of accomplishment. It is the path and the experiences that sometimes are more valuable than the destination itself.” She encourages, “GO FOR IT as you have nothing to lose!!!” See the brightness inside a tunnel, believe in the qualities you are endowed with, just as Rozzlin has faith to show the world what Bandra girls are made of! When spoken to Aunty Maggy, she boosts by nailing down her statement - ''Don't let kadak kadak happen for ekdum hattha kattha strong bones we have.'' Thus, promising to make all of Bandra very proud! Bandra Buzz defines her as beauty with brains, soaring ambition and plenteous fillings of her vitality as a prolific chic;*Wink wink!* Anushka Dutt
Talent overflow at the 60th All Bandra Zonals
For those of you who came, watched or participated, I'm pretty sure you would have enjoyed the thrilling experience that the 60th St. Andrew’s Bandra Parish Talent Contest had to offer this year. Besides where else would you find such rich talent in Music, Dance and Drama and all on one stage than at the Zonals. There were 4 entertaining weekends filled with breath-taking performances, right from the cute little below 8's to the talented vocal and instrumental age groups to the choirs to the dancers to the plays. What's incredible and speaking from experience being a regular at the Zonals is the amount of dedication and hard work that goes in just to deliver that one solid performance to not only wow the judges, but also the audience, but if you ask any of the
participants they’ll say it’s all worth it. And Yes! How can I forget the tasty mouth-watering zonal snacks which most of us look forward to every year at rehearsals. This year we had 4 young conductors with very different styles and teaching methods all competing to see who would bring out the best from their respective choirs. It was the well-deserved South West Zone and Mount Carmels Parish who bagged the 1st placed in the choral competition. The North East Zone and St. Theresa's Parish took home the challenge shield for the Best Musical Zone and The North West Zone along with St. Anne's parish and St. Vincent de Paul bagged the star trophy for the highest number of winners. There were many standout performances which will remain in our hearts and
minds for a long time. To name a few were the talented above 14 duet from the South West Zone which gave us a beautiful rendition of MJ's Billie Jean, 4 gorgeous girls from the North West Zone who got us swaying to their Pop Medley, a dance group from the South East who blew us away with their powerful “Don’t Drink and Drive” message and those adorable below 8 girls in the dance category who got the audience tapping their feet. It was also a treat to watch all the above 30 dance groups which were dominated by ladies grooving away with coordinated steps. The 60th Andrean All Bandra Zonals concluded with the plays on the 5th and 6th of September and Boy! We all knew that it was going to be a good show when you have a bunch of talent writers and directors
showcasing their work on the zonal stage. There were some outstanding performances from Daniel D’souza, Theron C. and Nikhil Alves all winning best actor awards but it was the North West Zone that took home the Best Production trophy winning the play and the overall 2015 Championship. Kudos! to the Managing Committee of the All Bandra Zonals who successfully organise this grand event year-in year-out giving a platform to all age groups to showcase their talent which is found in abundance here in Bandra. Hope to see you all next year at the 61st presentation of The St. Andrew’s All Bandra Parish Talent Contest. Cheers! Dujon Fernandes
The first question that I had for Imran Shaikh who is a prominent member of the Mumbai hair styling and brigade was, “What is the concept and idea behind the name of the salon?". His response reflects his dedication and intention behind his artistic endeavors “Hairstyling is just not a form of enhancing one's appearance, but for me it’s a form of art. And any artist cannot make a creation without pouring some portion of their self in 2 it, therefore Imran in 2u". During my career as a consultant for over a decade, this question has been asked to me over a hundred times. Authentic Feng Shui is not a religion. It does not conflict with whatever faith you may be practicing nor does challenge it, or undermine it. It does not require you to go against your religious beliefs. It is not a superstition or a myth. A great deal of it is simple logic and common sense. Feng Shui is actually a science that offers the ability to create a positive energy balance in our homes and office spaces. In fact, its application is a beautiful art of how you can improve the energy of the space in and around your living space to improve the quality of your life, to build

your prosperity and create a sense of wellbeing. So, do not be afraid to learn and reap its benefits. My bed is under a window? Is it bad? Are there any remedies for this? If not, where should I place my bed? - Ms. Anandi Gupta It’s not ideal to have your bed under a window. When a bed is placed under a window, it brings in negative energy to the occupant’s health. The window brings in rushing energy that flows through and causes one to be restless. In addition, the negative energy may impact one’s financial situation. The best option is to move your bed away from the window to your lucky direction based on your Kwa number which is derived from your date of birth. However, if you must, keep the windows covered with a curtain and make sure that you sleep in a bed that has a solid and thick headboard. Feng Shui can greatly improve your life! Its popularity in India has become massive as more and more people are beginning to explore the incredible benefits of this ancient science. 27th September 2015 is going to have many defining moments for members of the 79 year old Bandra Gym, situated on St. Andrew’s Road. This year the election scenario is incredibly different. There are allegations, insinuations & promises being made. Imagine, CafÊ Delite, Balaji & various coffee shops have interludes of heated conversation revolving around the BG elections.
The results are anybody’s guess. to driver services. To avail Taskbob services, one can tap on any of the service icons on the Taskbob Android app. Our aim at Taskbob is to simplify the process right from finding a reliable serviceman to ensuring service is completed satisfactorily and ontime. What was the idea behind launching Taskbob? While doing my previous start-up of helping people pursue interests, I realised that people in India, face much bigger problems. Problems such as finding a house, evading traffic, getting home services done. While getting any home service done, people in India are never sure about the time, quality and the price of getting the service done. Taskbob was thus conceptualised to create a happier India by addressing this everyday problem, of finding reliable and professional home services, of every Indian. TURN TO PAGE 3 >>
