have several dear people who help us in our work. We depend heavily on those good souls. Many of them are doing work without any payment – because they feel this is a good purpose. They feel happy to be involved in the work of the Basilica. I am supposed to take decisions – either one way or the other – and be able to spread the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ; who is the Son of Mother Mary. Now, Mother Mary is the one we are trying to imitate, so that like her - we can come closer & closer to Jesus, who is our Saviour. In this way, we can become spiritual, in every sense of the word. Here, we do not worry about any propaganda, unless people want to know anything specific. For this, we have our website (www.mountmarybasilicabandra.in) is very informative, so that those from elsewhere, especially those formerly from Bandra, who have spread all over world can see what is happening here.
What is your message to the pilgrims? Yes, come with a heart that is pure. Come with a heart that is ready to listen to the Word of God – and be able to really change your life. I tell our people here, that they take a lot
of trouble to come up the hill – some come early in the morning, some late in the evening, making a sacrifice from other things. This sacrifice is going to be in vain, if our innermost way of life is not lined up with the teachings in the Gospel. Those who do not come for our services, we allow them to pray here. People of all faiths come the whole day long – and we allow them to have their own way of prayer, without interfering with their wishes. Many of them want to give gifts, because they feel that they are being gifted by Mother Mary. Those gifts are usually in wax, which are eventually recycled. Any future plans? Yes, big plans. The work has already started. For the last few years, I was interested in having an exhibition of the mysteries of the rosary – so that people know more about Mother Mary & Jesus Christ. The building is coming up – and we hope it will be completed soon. There is a lot of work involved – and many people are helping, especially Fr. Aniceto Pereira, who is young & capable of completing this project. Prashant Pawshe

ven as the novena masses are celebrated, there are several people who are busy preparing for the Mount Mary Feast – and detailed logistics pertaining to the 8-days of unending devotees. This year, the new aluminum alloy canopy structure gives devotees an unhindered view of the main altar & celebrants – thanks to Sunil Solanki, who has done this out of love for Mother Mary, and not financial gain. Every September, The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, Bandra – is in the eye of the storm. To get an idea about this massive annual event, its present significance & future, BandraBuzz interviewed the Rector of the Basilica, Msgr. Nereus Rodrigues. He spoke candidly about various topics:
What is your role as Rector of the Shrine? Welcome to the Basilica! We are happy to meet people & give them information that they want, provided it is within our scope to do so. As the rector of the shrine, I have the overall responsibility. First & foremost, it is about arranging for the spiritual side – getting people to come here for the spiritual food that we have for them; so that they are led to Jesus, through Mary. This is important for us – and we insist on having the older prayers & novena services; so that the people really get spiritual success. But besides this, being the rector, I need to look at the other aspects too – like the shamiana, the altar, etc. However, I

VINTAGE VIEWS
Oh, Bandra! - In A Lighter Vein Why do I love Bandra, you ask me? Well, let me count the ‘whys’. First of all, Bandra has a marvelous beach with a promenade alongside, called Land`s End, which has seen the beginning of many things. Here, one can make love fully screened from view or hide from love fully enjoying the view. Many Bandra marriages have, in fact, started on the rocks… Bandra has Pali Hill, once famed for its pigs. Today, the whole of this fair suburb has its fair share of them - MCPs (Male Chauvinist Pigs). There`s Linking Road, our shoppers` paradise and ‘diners delight’. It links demands and supplies, haves and ‘whathave-yous’. We have delicious Chinese food places, all in keeping with that wellworn neighbourhood slogan: Chini, Chini, Buy ! Buy ! - Indeed, when Bandra boys say, ‘What a dish!’; you`re never very sure whether they`re referring to the food - or to the girls. We have 5 star hotels with 4 star service, 3 star food and multi-star drinks. At the bar, you can sometimes catch a falling star from the iconic Mehboob Studio, nearby. And let`s not forget our very own Bandra Fair, the ‘September Big Bash’, whose dark side is known only to the cops and other fly-by-night operators.
Lucky Bandra-based office-goers get the opportunity to commute like sardines in WR trains or tortoise-like in CR trains; which take them to work and back – when they do – in pieces. Not forgetting the BE(A)ST way of travel in this town. We have all kinds of under-takers, especially the kind who advertise gilt-edged coffins and classy cremations - and then go on blissfully to wish you a Bright & Prosperous New Year! Bandra has the most dug-up roads of any city-suburb, I know. When you walk down one, you are alternately mountainclimbing and deep sea-diving. Imagine enjoying these sports for free, at your very door-step! True, you die only once, but in Bandra you can be buried many times. Bandra is home to some of the country`s most outstanding sports folk –past, present and future. The roads are excellent training grounds. Bandraites are always on the ball; a sporting lot you could say. We have culture with a capital ‘C’ and what`s more, we make capital of it. Formerly the home of Parsees - now you just see the rare one pass by. Today, Bandra is the second home of Sindhis in the construction business who, having scraped the bottom of the barrel elsewhere, are now busy here scraping the
skies. The original inhabitants, the East Indian (NOT Bollywood stars) fisherfolk; since deprived of their livelihood (thanks to the predatory syndicate of big fishing trawlers), far from being down and out, still manage a pretty good ‘catch’, for their eligible offspring - and their old world homes. This Queen of the Suburbs is a perennial source of inspiration to budding writers, and her subjects - a constant cause of perspiration in erring public servants. What we love best about Bandra, however, is that we may hate her at times - but she`s still love-ly! She is the heart of the cosmopolitan city of Mumbai. If you wish to see Mumbai, come to Bandra. You`ll lose your heart here, for sure - and perhaps, also your purse. Of course, the next best thing to being born in Bandra, is to be buried here (Accommodation is difficult to find, even in our many cemeteries - and estate agents avoid selling this kind of space, for obvious reasons). But if you`re lucky, I mean really lucky, you might just realize your dream - and the dream of every wannabe to live here, if only on the footpath. Then, as the ‘Environmentalists’ are wont to say, “don`t mess it!” Bernie Tellis

Rising Rape On a sultry Sunday evening – 24th Aug 2013, with strong sentiments of the recent rape case still in the air, (even as a young photojournalist is surviving at Jaslok Hospital - from a traumatic gangrape experience at the abandoned Shakti Mill Compound in Mahalaxmi); an angry, yet peaceful protest march was successfully organized by the Congress Youth Wing - from Joggers Park to the Carter Promenade Amphitheatre, Bandra (West). Bandra Buzz captured some spontaneous reactions to the rising rape incidents, to get an insight into the minds of locals, who were part of the protest march. What’s your reaction to the recent rape case?
DALIP TAHEL, ACTOR “My reaction is mixed… I am obviously not shocked, as this is happening a lot. But I am devastated, that this can happen again and again. I am actually grieving that the life of one more, young girl has been attacked & molested… and for any conceivable amount of time, this will have a profound effect on her life. Now, the point is this: The reason why this does not shock me is that this is happening all over India. I think that the problem isn’t that there aren’t laws – there are laws that have been put in place which deal in issues such as rape & murder. The trouble is that they are not implemented at the right time. There is no robust implementation, which could be a deterrent to stop people from doing these things. And the reason for that is that the judiciary which needs to be supported, so that it works efficiently, without fear or favour; has been compromised by the people in power. The police force, which ought to be encouraged - is now demoralized. The result of this is what we are seeing now. Total chaos… people being assaulted in all walks: women are attacked, acid attacks, children are attacked, men are attacked, old people are attacked. It’s a complete collapse of any respect for the law, which I say again; has been compromised by the people in power. Every single one of us has the power in our hands to change this (situation). There is an election coming in 2014. It is important ,that every single person go to
the ballot and vote the right person in. It’s not a magic wand, it’s not going to happen overnight… but the process has to begin now – so that our generations: this generation and the generations coming subsequently will enjoy the benefits. It has to be done, so that the right people come in. We have the technology. We have a law called the RTI – Right To Information. Every single voter must go and check their candidates out. Since you have the right to information, get the information… and find out where is this person coming from?… what is their track record ?... are they going to work for the general good of the public? Who are these people? – and then vote them in. And, you will see the change. It will be a process, because when the right people come in and do NOT interfere, the government who is there to supervise & oversee the judicial process and the judiciary. They can’t interfere and compromise the judiciary & the police force. That’s when things will change. That’s when the law can be implemented. These guys allegedly, and quite clearly who committed this particular crime (rape of the photojournalist at Mahalaxmi), most of them were nabbed in about 24 hours. That’s because the machinery got working. There was a political will. People came out… Patil came out, saying,‘do this, do that… do the other’. They caught them. This is what should be the reaction time for any crime. It’s not that the police don’t know. It’s that the police are demoralized. So, they have to be allowed to do their job. I think that is a process where we have to vote the right people in. Now, we have the power to do it. This is the time to do it. Otherwise, we will have only ourselves to blame.” Why do you think they are demoralized? “Well, it’s because they are compromised. The police force is being used as an arm by politicians. The judiciary is the other arm. These are the two strongest arms. If you have the police & judiciary in your hand – you control everything. They are not allowed to do their job, because of interference. This is what they are doing – controlling everything. Even our lives are controlled by them. This is why everyone is demoralized. This is important, because it is causing

Spontaneous reactions at the Carter Road Promenade protest to the Rising Rape incidents
the downfall of a nation – not just Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is the ruination and downfall of a nation, when you allow your police & legislature to be compromised (not just controlled). Then, we stand no chance, because the nation will be in the hands of those who control it. This is divide & rule. This is what the imperialist did to India, till about 60 years back. This is what we fought against - to get Independence. This is exactly what is happening again. They have learnt their lessons well. This time it is worst… it is our own people. These are not the British – these are Indians, who are absolutely exploiting our own people. It’s all vested interest, it’s got to do with corruption & personal gain. Otherwise, this can never happen – this can never take place. So, that’s what we have to do: we have to understand that the power lies in each one of us. Vote correctly. There is a saying: ‘As you sow, so shall you reap’ – which, in Hindi is: ‘Jaise Karni, Waise Bharni’. You have to go out there – and vote for the right people. Otherwise, you have yourself to blame. And… that will be a real pity. Then, none of this (the peaceful protest march) matters.” Dalip Tahel, Actor “I strongly condemn the heinous act of
these people. They should be given severe sentences. All the perpetrators of this crime (should be punished). I think that it should be widely publicized that such things will not be tolerated in our society. Mumbai is considered to be a safe city – what is happening in our city? I believe that one of the culprits have been apprehended… and I feel they (the police) should do their utmost to find the others as well – and do something about it. Something strongly about it – not like the ‘Delhi Rape Case’, where the perpetrators got away because that woman died in a Singapore Hospital.” Jayshree Chainani, Certified Teacher I condemn this incident. I feel terribly for this girl who has been afflicted. Mumbai has prided itself of being a cosmopolitan city, where we venture out and express ourselves the way we like. This is a big stigma on the city. It’s made the city look terrible – and it is not acceptable. We need to take a stand against this. As citizens of this country, we need to take a very firm stand… and we want to tell everyone in the world, that Mumbai is not a place we will accept disrespect of women. We will stand up and fight it… and we want these men to be punished as harshly as possible. We will not tolerate this. Kenneth Hopkins, Digital Marketing Firm Founder

Refuse the Abuse The students of TYBMM of St. Andrews College, Bandra are organizing a Social Campaign called “REFUSE THE ABUSE” - which is a fight against Spouse Abuse. Today, various women and men face abuse in their relationships - and all of this goes by silently. Thus, we have chosen this cause to raise awareness among men and women out there, to raise their voice and fight for justice & safety. Abuse can be of various types: emotional, financial, and physical - and occurs in all relationships: boy-boy, boy-girl, girl-girl. It’s time we spread the word of awareness around and hence we start with “I”. Each one in our group started with an “I” - and so we formed a team , all together fighting for the cause. Our first step towards awareness started off with making a Facebook page and spreading the word around to our friends & family. A total of 912 supporters are already in support - and we strive to reach out to many more. Our second step to create awareness was a garage sale at St.Andrews Church, Bandra on Sunday, 25th August 2013. We collected clothes, jewellery, soft toys
Amit Lalwanis's Kickboxing, Muaythai & Self Defence Sessions
Bandra Buzz and other articles from our neighborhood and put them up on sale. Also, yummy food stuff like biryani, canapés, puri bhaji, etc was sold to cater to the taste buds. The money collected at the sale goes towards organizing our next big charity event. We received an outstanding response at the church garage sale and created awareness through our campaign banners and the badges sold. This would not have been possible without the assistance and guidance of the parish priest of St. Andrews Church, Fr. Michael and our respected Principal Dr. Marie Fernandes. Our next big step is to reach out to the masses through a 4 Day Campaign. Day 1 and Day 2 of the campaign will include involvement games like Sack Race, Tug of War, Dog and the Bone, etc. which will be played by our college students and will be organized in our college premises. Also, there will be a food sale that will take place and the funds collected will go to our partner NGO’s – Aasra and Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA). Also, a handcrafted jewellery stall by women and a tattoo stall by a mute girl will be put up. To showcase students support, we plan to make a Canvas Print of hand impressions of students

who support our cause. Our Campaign will also be spoken in classes to create an awareness amongst students. Day 3 includes workshops, games and canvas prints for residential societies at Carter Road. This would help us spread awareness among the elite crowd. Day 4 is our main and final day which will be organized at the Carter Road Amphitheatre. It is a charity concert which will showcase young talent in music and dance. Also, the NGO representatives will conduct a speech of how they help spouse abuse victims and how they spread awareness. Our event will grace the presence of celebrities and media. The event is a freeentry event and will be from 6pm-10pm. With regard to our partner NGO’S, we have chosen Aasra & BMMA supporting and assisting us in our campaign. Aasra is an NGO which helps women and men who are in depression and suicidal due to any reason. Whereas, BMMA fights for women in all aspects be it emotional, social or political. It teaches women to raise their voice against injustice & violence starting right from their own homes. Renowned companies have come forward and helped in sponsorships - or in some form or the other, supported the cause. Media coverage through print
media, television and radio is helping us voice out our awareness to as many as possible. We plan to visit nearby colleges and invite them to our event to create awareness and can pass on the message through word of mouth. We will be making a campaign teaser which will be showcased on Facebook as well as at our event to make our campaign more interesting. We would like to thank two very important people who have guided and supported our cause from the very beginning. First, is our copywriting Professor - Mr. Harish Iyer, with whose inspiration we have started this social campaign. He inspired us to go out into the real world and experience what all goes on there. Second, is our college principal who has helped us with the permissions and guided us through the right path. Without her help, we wouldn’t have been able to run our campaign. We are deeply thankful to these two gems. We hope to reach out to the masses and thus, make a difference to those couples who are facing abuse, in whatever form - and this starts with the very first step, that is AWARENESS. In this way, we will keep up to our campaign slogan : “ SPREAD LOVE, NOT HATE”. Dujon Fernandes

Detectives Wanted As the month of September begins, preparations are drawing to a close at St. Andrews College where one of the biggest conspiracies is about to be solved by BMM students all over Mumbai. Organized by the students of various self finance courses, XYZ’13 which is scheduled to unfold on the 19th and 20th of September, aims at exploring every detective’s sheer ability with events that have mystery and intrigue brewing in them. The organizing committee is all geared up. Every minute detail is being planned out. However, the theme for this year has already begun spinning mysteries around it. Why if you may ask? The answer lies with a group of fictional characters that have flawlessly managed to create a sense of mystery and intrigue in our lives. These crime solving, gun toting men and women who sprung out of crime shows and mystery novels have formed an integral part of XYZ this year. And since their theme is ‘The detectives of all time’, the colleges participating have been allotted contingents based on infamous detectives over the years. So may it be the all time deductive ‘Sherlock’, the anime mastermind ‘L’ or the ever so quirky Jacque Clouseau, they’re all a part of XYZ this year. And talking about mystery and intrigue, the events that the festival has in store are not too far behind. May it be the journalism, literary, photography, ad or movie event, each has a dash of that detective ingredient added to it. The Telegames, basketball, football and Gaming events attract mass participation. Also the Band, Dance and Fashion show have always been something to watch out for since they hap-
pen in the infamous St.Andrews auditorium which hosts 800 people at a go. The Treasure Hunt which is the flagship event however promises to be full of fun and suspense, the concept of which is still under wraps. Saudamini Bhagwat, the professor in charge said, “XYZ was started 5 years ago. It is a festival which aims at giving a chance to all the students from all the self finance courses to come together and share talent. It’s a place where new friendships are sealed and everyone gets a chance to win. This year the theme is the detectives as all of us have grown up on tales of Sherlock Holmes and the little grey cells of Hercule Poirot. We look forward to seeing students from all over the city having a blast and enjoying our hospitality. The festival would not have been possible without our generous sponsors.” XYZ ’13 launched their theme at ‘The Pier, Colaba’ on the 27th of July 2013. The event was graced by Noorin Sha of ABCD (Anybody can dance) fame. It received a huge turnout from enthusiastic students all over the city. “XYZ has grown over the years. This year it’s getting bigger. We are looking forward to pulling off two days of pure fun. Of course organizing it is twice the fun as well. I’m working with an amazing core team. Also my entire organizing committee has been really enthusiastic and supportive.” Ornellius Saldanha, the Chairperson for XYZ ‘13 said. The case is open. The crime scene is ready. The question is, do you have what it takes to solve Case XYZ? Joel Thottan

Just waiting for…OLIO the ‘Royal Affair’!
OLIO, the only inter-collegiate drama competition of its type in Mumbai will happen at St. Andrew’s Auditorium on 6th September 2013 at St. Andrews College, Bandra. OLIO literally means “A programme with skits, musical interludes and a backdrop”. Since its first year in 2001, OLIO has come a long way, with greater participation from many a college, including Hinduja’s, K.C, SIES, St. Xavier’s, Wilson’s, Jai Hind, Don Bosco's Engineering College, Nationals, MMK, Tolani, Pravin Gandhi Law College, Lala Lajpatrai and many more... the perfect platform for students to hone their onstage skills and maybe, even consider a career in the limelight. Actor Anand Tiwari, now in Bollywood and Freida Pinto (now in Hollywood) took home Best Actor prizes on this stage many years ago. Some of our past judges have been Cyrus Broacha, Ken Ghosh, Genelia, Perizad Zorabian, Ash Chandler, Dolly Thakore, Rael Padamsee, Kitu Gidwani, Sharon Prabhakar, Ashvin Gidwani and relevant actors, directors or theatre and stage personalities. This year’s team, as in the past 12 years is headed by Professor Desiree Gonsalves, who has been the ‘thinktank’ of OLIO. T.Y.B.Com student Aakash Saluja heads the Organising Committee along with S.Y.B.A student Samantha Fernandes. An entire exercise in event management, the Organising team works with departmental heads either in charge of the Play, Fillers, PR and Brochure, Art which includes design work, costumes and sets, as well as Hospitality and Security required for the event. It isn’t surprising then, that many of them, post graduation, head for a
career in Event Management. OLIO provides a platform for students to showcase their innate talents; be it in acting, writing, fillers, directing or being a part of the marketing, public relations, technical, or lighting scenario, which provides one with an all round practical educational experience. For first time actors too, facing a large audience helps overcome one’s fears and an introvert has many a time turned out to be, in fact, an extrovert! The elimination round on 22nd August, saw the final four being selected from participating colleges, that will go on to performing on the 6th of September. Each team will put on show, an original 25 minute One Act play and the 4 plays will be interspersed by rib-tickling, hilarious “fillers’ between, to entertain the audience. Every year, OLIO is themed (last year was “Twisted Tales’) and this year its “A Royal Affair”. Participating colleges were allowed to opt for a country to set their “Royal” theme, in. The final 4 colleges selected are KC College, Wilson College, Pravin Gandhi Law College and hosts, St Andrews. A workshop has been organised for these 4, with tips from theatre personalities to prepare them for the main event. There’s great anticipation and a feeling of excitement, with OLIO happening in a few days. Sponsors AOL Coolage and co-sponsors, Whistling Woods - amongst the many others, enable it to be a rewarding experience for the Best Play, Director, Actors and Sound and Lighting winners. There are prizes in store for the audience too. It’s going to be a fun filled afternoon… yes, The ‘Royal Affair’ beckons ! Alisha Pinto

SkyLark Club - Men’s Div. I League Bandra West Football Association win finals after 33 years
Team Manager Melville credits this spectacular win to “no-nonsense” International Coach Bernard & his Team Goal-Keeper & Captain – Prakash Rao (Anu). It was the sweetest sound to Team Manager Melville Murzello, when he heard the sound of the cheering crowd, as Capt. Prakash Rao (Anu) scored the winning goal in the tie-breaker. Earlier, as goal-keeper, Anu had saved the situation, when an almost sure shot goal was stopped with his quick reflexes. At the prize distribution ceremony, Skylark Club won a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 15,000/Indeed, 1st September spelled super success for Bandra’s SkyLark Football Club players, after 33 long years. Melville, an ex-student of St. Anne’s, Bandra - was an athletic school champion, who had (and still has) speed, skill & stamina in his youth. He is “football crazy” – and his enthusiasm is infectious. He has a soft heart. His players get
his unending support always – and they have responded by getting results. Melville told BandraBuzz, “I’ve realized my dream today, because of Coach Bernard”. Bernard Pereira is a tough-talking, no-nonsense international coach, who has “shaped a very raw team”, with discipline & lots of practice – to touch new heights of football success. He has played for the Vasco Sports Club – and is the first Goan player to represent India at the 1974 Asian Games, Tehran – Iran. His self-discipline is exemplary – as from 1964 till date, he is on his feet by 5am. His message to our sporting youth: “Be disciplined & come in time for your practices.” Bandra has a lot of talent – and when motivated & coached well, our players can surely show results. This is what Melville & Bernard has done to their team. We wish Melville & his team the very best in the years to come. Vineet Varma

All Bandra Inter-School Road Races 2013
On August 25th, 2013, the tranquil Sunday morning was perfect for the 1000 odd athletes who participated in the Silver Jubilee edition of the annual All Bandra Inter-School Road Races. This local event was conducted by the United Athletes Sports Club. Mahatma Gandhi Vidya Mandir, for the 13th year in succession, emerged the undisputed Champions in both the Girls and Boys sections with a tally of 170 and 126 points respectively. The Bandra East School which has proved itself to be an athletics powerhouse in the ‘Queen of the Suburbs’ put 16 winners on the podium in the eight races that were conducted. The School Principal, Smt Suman Gaonkar, was presented with a special trophy awarded to the coaches of the school, for producing an array of winners over the years. Sr. Thelma, Superior of Apostolic Carmel Convent, who has been gracious with their premises for the conduct of the race - and veteran chess Grandmaster,
Pravin Thipsay gave away the prizes. He exemplified two salient features of a sportsperson in his address to the participants; one, that each, irrespective of caste, creed or colour starts out at the same line, aspiring to achieve his or her best; and then that the very term ‘to be Sporting’ is used to encourage one to give others a fair chance. Speaking to the Sampey brothers, Eddy and Lenny on what has gone down in history as Mumbai’s longest-running Road Race, unique in its character, it came through that the sole motivator to conduct the event regularly over the past 25 years through thick and thin was the spirit to give our children a chance to perform and achieve on a platform conducive to making them better living beings, both physically and mentally. This has also been the driving force behind the daily Athletic Coaching that UASC conducts for the last three decades, open to anyone who feels the need to be fit for competition in any

The St. Andrews Bandra Zonals Finale!
The North West Choir
Winners of 2013 Zonals - The South West Zone Bandra is the place to be if you love music, dance and drama and what better platform to get all this entertainment than at the St. Andrew’s All Bandra Parish Talent Contest. And as yet another memorable Zonals comes to an end; there were some breathtaking performances which will live on for quite some time in music, dance and drama categories. There was a packed audience this Sunday the 31st of August with the winners of the different age groups from the previous two Sundays performing and ofcourse the presentation of the dramatics competition where we got to see some stellar performances and entertaining plays which was much appreciated by the audience. The South West Zone of St. Andrew’s Parish together with Mount Carmel’s Parish and Francis De Assisi bagged the Mr. and Mrs. Melville Mendes Shield for the best production trophy for their play Romeo and Juliet in the zone. The Northwest Zone of St. Andrew’s Parish together with St. Anne’s Parish and St. Vincent de Paul parish won the ‘The May and Melville Rodricks Star Trophy’ for the zone with the maximum number of winners and the Rev. Nereus Rodrigues Shield for the most musical zone. Let me tell you that the zones put in a lot of effort, hard work and preparations into putting together choirs, preparing participants for individual performances, duets and quartets and dances and getting together actors for the plays which include cast and backstage crews. So it’s definitely not a walk in the park, especially for the organizing committee who
year after year work hard and behind the scenes to make this event a huge success. For someone like me, who is involved with the zone every year and love

The Lost Crown Once upon a time there was a Queen named ' Bandra.' Her days of Glory were aplenty, up until few years ago when she was thrown into the deep end by greedy property developers, pot holed roads, congestive traffic jams and aliens(people from other parts of the Mumbai etc.) moving in to our rightful zone. And to add to the sanctity and beauty that Bandra once had , came the beggars, multiplying through the years. And though I have nothing personal against beggars and humbly admit to possessing a philanthropic heart when it comes to a few, there are times when I do turn to stone when am bombarded by them all at once. The traffic signals in Bandra seem to be infested with them and doing a bit of charity towards one deserving one is like unleashing a dozen in a matter of seconds. What infuriates me is their constant touching, persuasive pulling on clothes, following us into restaurants, or worse still their fist banging on car windows and scratching the glass with coins or finger nails when you ignore them. Unfortunately there is no one to tell them begging through such aggressive means is earning them more animosity than money. The recent add ons to the band wagon are the sari clad ladies setting shop at street corners hounding you with their imitation jewellery at traffic lights. We are uprooting hawkers from Linking road and Hill Road, but what about this new phenomenon emerging, that of being allowed to sell any item on the busiest of streets? We hardly have proper pavements to
Bandra Buzz walk on (thank you BMC) and now we have to endure being pushed here and there by forceful ladies! How come there is no law for this yet? How come the cops are not seeing 'this' as a safety hazard to drivers and pedestrians? They slap your knuckles for a mere seat belt, which is a joke when you driving at 50 km per hour in Bandra traffic. Where is the law to protect vehicle drivers? What if we drivers have to divert, press the brakes hard, skip a light only cause we trying to safe guard the urchins and sellers who are invariably blocking cars and holding on to door handles tightly while we trying to move ahead? In these cases, will the law see the drivers point or still conveniently slap a bill on them? My guess is the latter. Still, there are some who I can't help admiring - like the blind old man and his blind son, begging at the Turner Road light everyday diligently, never troubling the women folk out of respect and the 90 yr old lady who sits patiently in the same spot outside Café Coffee Day at Carters, from 9 am to 10 pm every season of the year. I knew a 16 yr old Prakash, who lived in the garden opposite SRK’s bungalow, and he dragged himself by his hands as both his legs were missing. He was an optimistic young fella, who asked me each time I saw him to find him some job as he was fed up of living the street crawling life. And of course, there is a favourite, seventy year old Ashok Bhai who lives on a mobile chair near the small park opp Otters, weathering the rains with a blue plastic, never once asking for alms, always smiling and also keeping me informed on the happenings of Perry Road. But in general with most of them, we

walk a thin line, if you give them money because they are really needy, you encouraging beggary from those who are capable of working - and if you don't give at all, then you depriving someone genuine in need of a small meal. The most recent ones who were at the receiving end of my annoyance were the candle sellers outside Mount Mary Church. The feast days, understandably is the time for candle shops to make a buck , but when you going to Church for some peace and quiet, the last thing you want is half a dozen candle selling kids poking and screaming at you. The shop owners who put them onto this, should have more sense than to inflict the devotees which such menacing selling tactics. The sad part is the ratio of children beggars to adults in Mumbai, is almost 70 to 30. That just shows how many future beggars our city is currently breeding, Bandra being the hub. But can we completely blame only the ones asking our help, or the ones that refuse to find a way out for them? We are pumping millions into issues like ''Global Warming'' yet those in power seem ignorant of the term ''heart warming''. An English family once asked me where I live. when they heard, “Bandra” they excitedly remarked that they believed it was the ''Queen of suburbs.'' I jokingly replied, ''Yes, yes it's very much like being on the Buckingham palace grounds''!!!

Bandra Diaries It’s funny how things that make you the happiest are the hardest to find, love for one. Whoever you meet is either single and looking for love, or the ones who are in relationships are mostly unsatisfied with their love. And then it makes you think, is love really a feeling that makes you grow and helps you reinvent yourself, or on the contrary does it make you dependent on another person and you begin to seek external solace for your own happiness. Love is primarily an expression that allows you to let go and give yourself completely to a situation, person or a place. So in essence, it eventually is an emotion of the self, of losing all inhibitions and committing yourself. So then, do the self imposed so-called ‘terms and conditions’ come with a pinch of self doubt and self worth? Does love fall short because you feel you are not capable of, well loving? Another theory may suggest in the confusion between love and lust. Honestly, both are inter related, one leads to another; but in the long run it is the very foundation of a relationship that keeps it going. If the bond comes through a physical connection, we all know the body doesn’t last forever. And if the very root of the relationship is in love, then your bond has soul. And if you may doubt this logic, every time you are with someone, just ask yourself a simple question... did you make love or was it sex; you will know where your relationship is headed. Is love over rated? How can a feeling that makes all emotions run through you at one time, a feeling that takes you to a place of complete bliss, and a feeling that makes you realize the purpose of your existence, be over rated. It is the narrow course of definition that your mind decides to take that makes love seem unimportant. It is the lack of love for all, and love only for one kind that restricts your mind to understand the untamed ability of love to surrender itself. And - when love takes over, you can see it. You can see the tears in the eyes of a mother of a new born baby, a happy couple look into each other’s eyes at opposite corners in a party, a proud father hold his son by the shoulder at a family function, the smile on a person’s face when they get off the flight returning to their hometown, and a teacher clap when the students get their graduation certificates. Love is when happiness goes beyond the self, when you embrace the joys of the world, of your people, of place, and learn to make them your own. Eventually, love is the only way to live. Bharat Gupta

NOW - DOUBLE THE BUZZ! Dear Readers, The festive season is on – and gaiety is in the air. The rains are receding, with many more spells of bright sunny days that get us energized for more outdoor activities. September in Bandra is like one long, never-ending party. At this time of the year, Bandra is centre-stage to other areas in & around Mumbai. September is indeed a ‘special month’ for Bandraites. Even as local issues regarding the 8day Bandra Fair get highlighted, this tradition of more than 300 years is welcome by a vast majority. People of all faiths visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount - and then patronize the Bandra Fair stalls. Children love the balloons, bubbles, games, rides & the festive atmosphere. For long lost relatives & friends from elsewhere, this is bonding
time for their ‘Bandra family & friends’. Meanwhile, Bandra Buzz has evolved to a ‘FORTNIGHTLY’ – so that you get double the buzz. Our monthly editions just could not justify covering the most happening suburb – this side of the Suez. So, use your local platform to maximum advantage for your events, news & issues. We are here to support ‘just causes’ – and as always, you can expect unbiased reporting. Wishing you a ‘Happy Bandra Feast’ – with abundant blessings from Our Lady of the Mount. Regards, Merck D’Silva Editor-In-Chief 98207 83616
Letters to the Editor BANDRA FAIR This is in reference to the article on the Bandra Fair, in your last issue. As responsible activists of Bandra, we love the Fair - which is over 300 yrs. It was started in those days, when people from across Mumbai and beyond would travel by bullock carts and horse carriages to wish Mother Mary a ‘Happy Birthday’ on September 8th. The journey then took many days and the weary pilgrims required rest and refreshments, which is how the fair evolved in the area surrounding Mount Mary Basilica. We agree with the ‘pro-Bandra Fair’ stance taken by this CROSS NGO. Their stand, pointing out the double standards of Lillian Pais who (in person and proxy) has been complaining and serially litigated over the past 4 years to seemingly shut this completely legal tradition. All this, while leaving and ignoring the 365 days of the year, that a ‘Bandra Fair’ is going on at Hill Road, Bandra Station, Linking Road in the form of illegal hawking. To activists like us and other honest activists to complain, we stick our necks out while enduring constant threats. The Bandra Fair is an easy soft target, whereas the illegalities of the madrassa in her area, (highlighted in your article) is tough to tackle and probably not endorsed by her backers. Its strange that despite her many cases filed against the Bandra Fair on various (we feel) cooked up charges, against a Fair that has endured 300 years in its present form without any major untoward incident; thanks to Mother Mary who watches over Bandra, (being turned down by the courts who have favoured the continuation of the fair with proper planning - and the time tested regulations set by the BMC, fire brigade, police, BEST, etc.. ) she clearly has not noted the wisdom of the learned judges. It is noteworthy to add, that no local
elected representatives came forward to support the continuation of the Bandra Fair in court and its defense was left to well meaning individuals like Desmond D’Souza, John Miranda and others amongst and including us supporting their stand… that’s probably because Catholics are no more a vote bank for these politicians who jump to the defense of other large communities many a time even to protect illegalities. That said, the Mahim Dargah Fair, the Kumbh Mela & the Bandra Fair are all state gazetted fairs; that are part of our Indian tradition over hundreds of years. They must be respected, or at least tolerated by all communities out of brotherhood for each other… illegalities during festivities must be opposed and regulated and attempts at new illegal traditions started mostly by netas eyeing vote banks which they then try to legalise must also be opposed. But, any like attempts to shut down centuries old tradition linked to any and all communities religious beliefs - whether Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Parsi or Catholic, that are much loved and partaken of by millions of Indians of all communities, should be considered ‘naughty’ and a selfish attempt to breach brotherly love between communities. This will be opposed by all true blue Bandraites and Mumbaikars. Anil Joseph & Neil Pereira
The CROSS Organisation is well known for its dynamism and its straight forward actions. We are not dominated by any politicians, like some others, who are masquerading groups. They follow the directions of the politicians of a particular party, which is quite evident on the way they function - and are often seen in liaison with politicians. CROSS Organisation

Garbage Free Weekend What is GARBAGE? – It is ‘Wasted or spoiled food and other refuse, as from a kitchen or Household. A thing that is considered worthless or meaningless’ (English Dictionary) We are the source of garbage and what we discard and how we discard can determine the future of our environment and planet. That is the overall view but closer to home, garbage affects our health and surroundings our locality it also reflects on our culture and attitude. With the garbage free weekend initiative of Wake Up Bandra Foundation and Khar Residents Association (KRA) in collaboration with the BMC - we want to try and achieve “ZERO” garbage, at least for the weekend. It is so easy for SOCIETY to put the blame on the BMC but it is up to the citizens to be more conscious of the fact that you cannot dispose your garbage as and when and where you feel like. India is a nation driven and held closely together by RELIGION – and there is a saying that goes – CLEANLINESS IS
NEXT TO GODLINESS, so how HOLY are we? The Garbage Free Weekend on the 6th and 7th of September is aimed at us citizens, to make the theme of the weekend come true. 2,00,000 handbills are being distributed thru newspapers in which telephone numbers mentioned and can be called if a citizen spots garbage in his /her locality the wardens will be informed and the garbage picked up. Citizens on their part should ensure that they do their part for the area, by ensuring that people caught throwing waste are educated for which we have asked conscientious citizens from various ALMs to undertake this. Schools also have been roped in to educate children on garbage and its effects on the environment in the course of their assemblies. With your help and participation, let us make our areas a better place to live in. Dereyk Talker

IN FOCUS
Ziyus Contractor: The Next Big Thing If his face looks familiar - and you wondering where you have seen him before, think adverts on your silver screen. Airtel montage, CafĂŠ Coffee Day, Hyundai, Nivea, Sprite, Pepsi and the most recent Lenskart will ring a bell. All of 24, spotting a cheeky grin, his trademark head band and a cool attitude, 'Ziyus Contractor' - Bandra's very own unconventional model kid, who has made quite a name for himself in the competitive world of ad films, shares some of himself with us.... So Ziyus, when did you start modelling? Well properly only a year and half ago, that's when things really took off for me. What was you inspiration to get in front of the camera? None really, I never really thought about it. I wasn't doing anything much those days, then a friend and me just started going for auditions. I bagged the MTV Rush, where I played the nerd. At one ad audition, I met someone who I passed on my number - and next I know he came up to me, saying that they wanted someone who looked like me, as the one they finalized had cancelled out and there I bagged the Airtel ad! And much to my delight both MTV Rush and that one released on the same day, that was my birthday August 5th. My family was very excited. Your looks are different from the normal Choco types. Wouldn't you be afraid it would get monotonous? I don't think so. First I played the nerd in ads. Then I played the cool guy. Both have worked for me. I have a goal of hundred ads, I want to come on TV so much that people are totally fed up of seeing me (laughs). So what are the more famous ones you have appeared so far? The most memorable were 'Alto' with Rashi Khanna of Madras CafĂŠ and 'Lays' and 'Lenskart', where I play the lead. Then there was 'Pepsi' with Virat, Raina, Ranbir Kapoor and Dhoni. And I enjoyed doing the music video for Lost Stories 'how you like me now' which made it to VH1 top chart (yes, we checked it out on YouTube, it's pretty cool) What about you really clicked on television, while others are still struggling? I am persuasive like really pushy at times, so that works. But saying that I need to work on my Hindi, being a Parsi you know how that is. Also I am quite focussed, like I would go to another audition the moment I finish one shoot, I don't sit around waiting. For me, it's like live it now.
I don't compromise like I wouldn't do anything to get to the top, I have my ethics and that's why if movies are the next thing for me, they would be done with myself respect intact if you know what I mean. Also, I don't have a professional portfolio. People advice me to get one, but this is my way.... And... anything else you like doing besides modelling? I would love to go scuba diving and deep sea diving as a hobby and also travel abroad for shoots, and fingers crossed some day I will. I am pretty easy to work with, so I am sure that would happen. I like hanging out with my friends. I had got out of the party scene for a while and now I plan to ride back on it.
What would you like to tell the other side tracked ......(grins) hopefuls, who want to step in your shoes? Focus on your goal, don't get lost in reKainaz Jussawalla lationships and women - or you just get Pic Courtesy: Nelvin John
