‘There is no substitute for hard work,’ Thomas Edison once quoted. The above statement is an epithet of the girls of the Apostolic Carmel football team. For the last few months they had been toiling hard to up their fitness, improve their control of the ball and play practice matches to get their act perfect. They eventually did, and how! The girls of Apostolic Carmel High School emerged triumphant after they beat Arya Vidya Mandir, Juhu in an edge of the seat encounter at Azad Maidan earlier last month. The solitary goal came from the boots of Ash D’Silva in the first half of a game that showcased some high quality end-to- end action. But what’s significant is that the win was a display of a total team effort; if the

goalkeeper and defence stood rock solid at the back, the midfield and forwards played their part in keeping the rivals on their back foot. Coach Cosmos Vaz deployed his strategy perfectly making the most of his players’ strengths. In the absence of a seasoned goalkeeper, Carissa Fernandes, who is a midfielder by nature, manned the goalposts, this, given her agility and quick reflexes, leading to her making some vital blocks in the final. In the midfield, Ash D’Silva – whom the coach calls the ‘backbone’ of his team - played a stellar role, dropping back to defend as well as driving forward to attack, giving the opposition players a tiresome day at the office. Apostolic Carmel School are making waves in District & International Football Meanwhile, Mmehak Lobo, fresh from her shift with the U15 Indian Women’s National Team, threatened with her blistering runs down the right flank forcing the opponents to have a couple of players on her tail throughout the game. But that was not all. Having already played a game at Borivali in the morning (winning their third-place match of the Subroto Cup agonizingly being edged in the tie-breaker in the semi-finals), the girls had to battle four hours of bumpy road travel, mental fatigue as well as tired legs, which made their victory all the more sweeter. Coach Cosmos Vaz was elated, “I can’t express how happy I am with the girls. Most of these girls were part of the U14 squad that won the MSSA title last year which helped them understand each other’s game better. Our defence and midfield put in a solid shift and it was a pleasure to watch them play their hearts out, this, after playing another game in the morning as well.”

Sea View Sports Club & Childrens Academy emerge Champions Sea View Sports Club (Bandra) emerged Champions defeating Bombay Republicans 2-1 in the Veterans Men’s Hockey League Final on Sunday 2nd September 2018 which was organized by the St. Peter’s Youth Centre and played at the St. Stanislaus High School’s Astro Turf in Bandra. S. Meghraj struck an early goal for Republicans in the early minutes of the game to put Republicans 1-0 up. Just before half time Sea View found the equalizer through Laxman Rao. Midway through the second half Olympian Dhanraj Pillai who entertained the large crowd with his brilliant stick work and passes struck the winning goal for Sea View. Sea View’s goalkeeper Vijay Kanan won the Player of the Tournament award while S. Meghraj of Republicans bagged the player of the final award. Childrens Academy (Malad) emerged

champions defeating Combined Schools in the final of the Inter Schools Champions league 2018 via the tie breaker and also organized by the SPYC earlier at the same venue. Om Rathod and Rhythm Mamnai scoring a goal each for Childrens Academy and Combined Schools during regulation time. In the tie breaker Govind Nag was the only scorer to give his side Childrens Academy the winners trophy. Rhythm Mamnai (Childrens Acd) was later adjudged as the player of the final and Govind Nag (Combined Scools) was declared as the player of the final. The Truth about Milk & Why it is Bad for Us There was a time we all drank milk (including our ancestors) without any health problems. So what has changed about milk that makes it important to reconsider this milky-beverage? It’s the quality. There has been deterioration in the quality of milk and the health of animals that produce it due to the greed and corruption of most food lobbies. Thus it’s very important to create awareness about dairy and dairy products. With awareness comes the power of making a choice and deciding whether dairy is the right fit for you or not . Here are a couple of truths about dairy: 1) Raw milk is good and pasteurised milk is not Our ancestors drank raw milk straight from the cow and that raw milk is the most powerful food on this planet. It’s the best source of class A protein in its raw form as all amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals are intact. Pasteurisation and Homogenisation on the other hand kills all of its benefits, denatures live digestive enzymes and proteins, destroys vitamin C, makes calcium, phosphorous, magnesium insoluble in the human body, kills good bacteria and renders it useless. The only benefit pasteurisation has on milk is increasing its shelf life. 2) The quality of milk today makes you acidic and fat The process of homogenisation and pasteurisation makes milk acidic in nature. To neutralize the pH level, our body starts leaching calcium from bones. This

can lead to pain & inflammation in joints & conditions like arthritis & low birthweight because the protein is denatured & not in an absorbable state by our body. Secondly, the process of homogenisation changes the good quality fat in milk now into bad fat. This leads to accumulation of fat around abdominal area. 3) What feeds the cow feeds us To meet supply & demand, cows are fed corn and soy to fatten, injected with vaccines and antibiotics so that they are disease-free, injected with estrogen, bovine growth hormone to produce milk. When we consume milk from such cows we see a rise in girls reaching early puberty, hormonal issues (PCOS, ER+ve cancers), obesity, antibiotic resistance, diabetes. Cows are also milked using unethical practices that leads to a lot of contamination of milk with blood and pus cells. 4) Yogurt is better than milk There’s a big difference between yogurt & milk because when milk is fermented, it changes the molecular structure and becomes easily digestible. During fermentation, lactoferrin is generated which is a great probiotic. Even thin buttermilk is a great alternative provided it’s cultured at home and is of good quality. 5) Cases where it’s best to avoid milk Dairy might not be the best food for you if you are dealing with any of the following: struggling to lose weight, arthritis or any sort of inflammation, leukaemia,

cancers, cardiovascular problems, IBS, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, too much mucous & colic in children. Dairy can cause inflammation and irritate the gut linings. It also contains insulin like growth factors that can worsen a case of diabetes, obesity and cancer. Hence you may want to eliminate that completely. When we cut out milk, we see a remarkable improvement in these conditions. If not milk, then? There might be many ways to replace milk like almond milk, rice milk, hemp milk, cashew milk or coconut milk but they cannot offer you the kind of protein, raw milk would have. So it’s important to get protein & calcium from natural food sources. A healthy balanced diet can give you enough of protein. As for calcium: sesame seeds, poppy seeds or khuskhus, lentils, beans, black eyed

peas, white beans, green leafy vegetables, amaranth, figs, almonds, walnut, carrots, broccoli, sweet potato, oranges are richest sources of it. At the same time, if you can source raw, pure & organic cow milk from a trusted source that feed cows fresh green grass & are free from any antibiotics & hormones and milked with hands (the traditional Vedic way) while using safe and hygienic practices, it’s absolutely good to go if its suits your health and lifestyle . Avoid it if you suffer from any condition listed earlier. The whole idea is awareness and we need to start making changes based on our health. A little milk that goes into your tea or dessert is not the problem, but consuming it in large amounts and relying on it as the only source of calcium and protein, that too of bad quality, is the problem. LGBT: Section 377 Decriminalised Bandra Boy Dr. Kersi Chavda does us proud! “LGBT” stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. LGBT emphasises varied sexual and gender identity-based cultures. It is also used to refer to anyone who is non-heterosexual, instead of exclusively to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. TIMELINE OF THE LGBT MOVEMENT IN INDIA: Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was introduced in 1861, by the British; to criminalise sexual activities “against the order of nature”. The fight for decriminalisation of the section 377, has been long & arduous. It started when AIDS activists took up the cause, way back in 1994. But the real legal battle started in 2001, when Naz Foundation filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, challenging Section 377. Since then, it has been a roller coaster ride. In 2009, the Delhi High Court passed a landmark judgement decriminalising Section 377. Unfortunately, this was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2013. Then, in January 2018, after much efforts by various petitioners; the case was transferred to a bench of five judges of the Supreme Court, headed by the Chief Justice of India. HISTORIC JUDGEMENT On the historic day of Thursday, 6th September 2018, the five-member Supreme Court bench ruled that consensual adult homosexual sex is not a

Now, young children can fall down on the rocks from a height, just because of the park’s maintenance negligence. This is a disaster waiting to happen – if these rusty railings are not replaced.

KERSI CHAVDA & THE INDIAN PSYCHIATRIC SOCIETY: Some may think it is small, but a very important role was played by Dr. Kersi Chavda – a “Bandra Boy”. Dr. Chavda has been a psychiatrist for more than 35 years. He has been the President of the Bombay Psychiatric Society, and the Chairperson of the task force for school psychiatry & counselling. He was also a member of various other task forces under the umbrella of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS). Two years ago, the IPS set up a task force to deal with issues related to the LGBT community. Dr. Chavda took over as Chairperson of the task force, in March 2018; along with his colleagues Dr. Amrit Pattajoshi, as Co-Chairperson, and Dr. Avinash DeSousa, as Convener. The task force worked tirelessly and relentlessly, in their efforts to spread awareness and sensitise the public towards the LGBT community through seminars, training for medicos and non-medicos, and dissemination of scientific information, aimed at de-stigmatisation of the LGBT community. Simultaneously, in view of the upcoming Supreme Court hearing on Section 377, the task force had a series of interactions with the Executive Committee (EC) of the IPS, to issue a public position statement in support of the

The public position statement of the IPS stated that members of the LGBT community were not suffering from any kind of mental disorder, & that same sex sexuality is a normal variant of human sexuality, much like heterosexuality. The IPS further stated that there is no scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be altered by any treatment. In conclusion, the IPS extended their total support for the decriminalisation of homosexual behaviour.

Family & friends have often used a method of “Corrective Rape”, to try to “convert” a male or female homosexual person to heterosexuality. With immediate effect, on cases such as these and other forms of harassment or blackmail; the members of the LGBT community can now approach the law enforcement authorities and register such offenses, seeking justice from the law. In the words of Dr. Chavda, “We can be optimistic, that while it will take many years to achieve total inclusiveness of the LGBT community in our society; the process has now started- and it is irreversible and, however long it may take - it is now, just a matter of time.” Porus D. Beyond Bandra Edwin Fernandes, is the local boy next door. He retired as a General Manager of a PSU Bank. His demeanour is anything but high profile, nor is he brash or boastful. He is a ‘just behind the scenes’ kind of a guy. Edwin has just written his second book (the 1st was “Patna Ponderings”), an eminently readable tome appropriately entitled “Beyond Bandra”. The author, a dyed in the woods Bandra boy, has spread his wings and discovered “killing fields” beyond the Queen of the Suburbs, which he parted ways with more than 3 decades back. His bank job took him to various parts of India and he has travelled the world extensively. However the umbilical cord with Bandra cannot be broken so easily, though. Like they say, “You can take a man out of Bandra but you cannot take Bandra out of a man”. Edwin’s latest offering is published by Frederick Noronha of Goa 1556. Manuel or Manual: An Alphabet and a Name Earlier this year, as I walked down Manuel Gonsalves Road, close to the Cotton World store, a signboard caught my eye. It was outside the entrance of the Hostel for Working Women. Something, however, was amiss with the sign. The sign read “Manual Gonsalves Hostel for Working Women”. It occurred to me that being situated on Manuel Gonsalves road & named after the same person as the street was, the irony lay in the spelling of the first name. “Manual”, after all, refers to either a type of engine transmission, or a book of instructions. “Manuel”, on the other hand, is from “Emmanuel”. After the initial chuckle, it was fairly obvious that no one had noticed this rather obvious slip up. An email to the person in charge of the Hostel for Working Women, Mrs. Fonseca, followed. While I was initially disappointed at not receiving a response, I was

soon pleasantly surprised to find that in a week’s time, the board had been corrected. An errant alphabet had been changed to reflect the person’s correct name. While we often use the road that bears his name, not many in Bandra know who Manuel Gonsalves was. The “Bombay East Indian Association 1887-1937 Golden Jubilee Souvenir” released in the year 1938 mentions him as “an East Indian philanthropist, from Malla, Bandra; whose charities cover many institutions. He was the moving spirit in building St. Anne’s Chapel. St. F. Xavier School, Sherly; and Manuel Gonsalves Widows’ Home, Pali Road”. Indeed, Manuel Gonsalves is perhaps best known for rebuilding St. Anne’s Chapel (now Church) in 1896. The stone tablet at the entrance of the church mentions him too, though, as “Manoel”, due to Portuguese phonetics of the day. On his passing, he was granted a perpetual grave, with an inscription in Portuguese, acknowledging his work in renovating & expanding the Chapel. The document from 1938 also goes on to mention that “he donated and bequeathed large sums of money to various religious and charitable institutions”. After his demise, his wife, Mrs. Maria Francisca Gonsalves carried out his philanthropic work in his name. The name of Manuel Gonsalves, one of Bandra’s once well known resident quickly being restored on the board of the Hostel for Working Women, brought me the realization that all of us can make the effort to correct an oversight. An alphabet can restore the good name of a good man. So the next time you spot an anomaly, make the effort to try and correct it. The result might pleasantly surprise you. Debasish Chakraverty

Idole Indienne 2018 Mumbai Finals and West-Zone Semi-Finals successfully concluded in Mumbai

Many youngsters nurse the desire to be the next singing superstar. Singing is a passion for many & even the most tonedeaf self-crooner and bathroom singer will admit to nursing the hope of being the next Michael Jackson or Freddie Mercury & finding his way behind the microphone to win a trophy or two. As Josh Groban has rightly said, “There’s no half-singing in the shower, you’re either a rock star or an opera diva.” It was therefore no surprise to see many students of French in Mumbai, honing their musical talents & competing for the much coveted Idole Indienne 2018 title, (a Triennial Singing Competition of French songs in 2 categories – Below 18 years & above 18 years.) This platform has been provided to them by the Indian Association of Teachers of French, founded in 1953, at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai), in association with Institut Français, Inde, which encourages students of French to express their passion for singing, while promoting French culture at the same time. In recent weeks, after several elimination rounds in their respective schools, three singers from each school or college were given the opportunity to exercise their vocal chords at the recently concluded Mumbai City Finals, on 11th August, which took place at Ecole Intuit.Lab, Prabhadevi. The Mumbai IATF Team, consisting of the West Zone Secretary, Mrs. Prochy Master & a band of dedicated teachers from several schools had spared no efforts, to see that the competition went off smoothly- no mean feat since there were 52 participants. The judges which included Mrs. Aruni Purwar, a student of A.R. Rehman & equally at home in Hindustani & Western Classical Music, Mrs. Sabrina Modak & Ms Patricia Galéa had a tough time choosing a handful of winners from 52 participants. The Mumbai finals were followed a couple of weeks later by the West Zone Semi-Finals, on 25th August, at the prestigious Dhirubhai Ambani International School, BKC, where contestants

from the 4 cities of Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur & Baroda, competed with each other to get selected for the Grande Finale at Pune, on 1st September. The Members of the Jury included such luminaries as Dr. Vasumathi Badrinathan, a well-known name not only in French circles, being a PhD in French and the Head of the Department of French at the University of Mumbai, but also a renowned Carnatic Vocalist having given shows both in India and abroad, as well as a Bharatnatyam dancer. The other judges included Mrs. Jeanne Merchant, a prominent Western Vocal coach, teaching the nuances of music to kids from 3 and a half years to 20 years and beyond. She has sung with jazz bands in the country and abroad and has also released a Hindi Pop album. The 3rd member of the jury was Monsieur Yan Garin, the Assistant Vice President (Operations) at École Intuit.lab. Yan started learning music when he was 9, and has a French Baccalauréat of Literature and Arts, with a major in Music. The program began with a welcome dance performed by the students of Witty International, Malad, trained by their dance teacher, Ms Impal Kadhi and was followed by the singing contest. After much deliberation, 2 winners above 18 & 2 below 18 years were chosen & they will now head to Pune for the Grande Finale on 1st September at the Fergusson College Amphitheatre & compete with winners from several IATF Zones from all over India. The winner in the above 18 category will get not only a trophy & several other goodies, but also a free ticket to Taipei and an opportunity to represent India, on 11th November 2018 at the AsiaPac Vision Singing competition where several francophone countries will participate. In the words of Monserrat Cabal, “When a singer truly feels and experiences what the music is all about, the words will automatically ring true.” Hopefully the singers will keep that in mind, while competing for the Idole Indienne 2018 Trophy. It’s that time of the year where people eat, sleep and repeat, rehearsal after rehearsal, to get the St. Andrew’s

Auditoriums’ attention during those 3 to 5 minutes of their performance and simply try to wow everyone in there. From dance to music to elocution to art, the Zonals bring out the best talents in everyone & it doesn’t just stop at talent, oh no! The Zonals bring out the competition & how! Captains of the four zones – North West, South West, North East & South East endlessly scour their zonal

territory to shelf out entries into various competitions that would ultimately culminate into the final weekend, which is the first weekend in September, which will declare which zone takes the championship trophy home. All of the entries into the singing, dancing, and art, elocution and drama contests deliver points to the zone on a whole and those points determine the champion zone. This year was a hit and miss as the Northwest & Southwest zones fought it out for 1st place in the last 2 weekends of the contest. Both closely tagging along

each other for that final cup – which ultimately had the Northwest Zone take it home with a score difference of just 17 points! The Zonals doesn’t just end at the auditorium, all the zones take to their homes as they celebrate months of planning and hard work, after all, it’s a well-deserved break after running the hell around for 2 to 3 months. Bandra Railway Station (West), Hill Road & Linking Road look wider; thanks to some drastic civic action. Drainage systems have been improved at key points. The Yoga Park at Bandra Reclamation is now a new landmark, as we enter Bandra - via the highway. This year, devotees to the Mount & revellers at the Bandra Fair; saw a dramatic change in crowd management. Yes, the ‘by-now-famous’ pot holes of Sherly Rajan road; can wait for ‘justbefore-the-elections’, to get done. Carter Promenade is in shambles & nobody seems to care. The stench near Bandra Market’s Mutton & Chicken Shops continues, due to garbage dumps & no proper disposal – causing serious health hazards. All this, inspite of being a stone throw away from the residences of our

local MLA & Municipal Corporators. We are in that period of time (just before elections), when citizens can demand civic amenities due to them – and it gets done. Bandra Buzz – your favourite neighbourhood newspaper has always been your watchdog, to pin-point issues of common concern. Redevelopment or Showing Power of Strength On Chinchpokli Road stands a building whose tenants have locked horns with landlord over ‘Redevelopment’ plans. This 70 year old structure was marked by BMC as dangerous and unfit for residency. On inspection and analysis their structural auditors filed report based on stress loads at different design parameters which was enough proof for the BMC to take drastic action. On 25th August, water and electricity to the premises was cut-off, plunging 30 families into darkness and chaos. This sudden action shocked the entire neighbourhood. Such type of arm twisting tactics was not seen before during the long tenure of Congress rule, but times change. Now you cannot challenge authority nor can you take law in your own hands. Does the BMC have the moral or legal authority to cut off water and electricity to any residential building? The answer is no, but at the same time it

cannot be held accountable for deaths when buildings collapse that are not certified as being safe. Water which is an essential commodity of our living cannot be deprived to any citizen of the country who pays the dues and taxes of the property on which he or she lives. This arm twisting tactics is done at the behest of some external political force, which has an axe to grind in the development of the building. There are several dilapidated buildings in Bandra and the whole of Mumbai, which are crumbling and ready to fall any moment. Has the BMC

done its homework and cut-off essential services like water and electricity? The 30 families who have been affected by BMC’s harsh measures are now looking for alternative accommodation that will suit their budget. You cannot live in darkness, without water, electricity and a ceiling fan to get comfort. There are senior citizens in this building who are ailing and in poor health. They are bed ridden and unable to move, depending upon their kin’s to help them at every step. Isn’t this a mockery of justice? If there are some who have opposed de-

velopment for own reasons, then why should others suffer? In the past 12 years these very tenants have been running from pillar to post, seeking help from Corporators, activists, lawyers and others, but nothing was happening, only tall promises. What guarantees are there that ‘Redevelopment’ will really work? Each day we read in the newspapers how these builders are duping tenants into grabbing land under false pretexts of development. Yes the government has introduced RERA to curb the practice of blackmail, extortion and severe punishment for realtors who cheat and use political influence to get rich from greed.
