Cement Road to be Opened to Devotees Representatives of the Catholic Community - Judith Monteiro (secy AOCC), Adv Joe Sodder (AOCC/CPF) & Savio Miranda (CROSS) met with the concerned Church & Police authorities to ensure that “Cement Road would not be closed this festive season to devotees visiting the Mount Mary Basilica during the Bandra Fair”. DCP Satyanarayan (Bandra) assured that the Cement Road would not be shut to devotees going up to the Mount. Sr PI Dhavle (Bandra, West) also assured the same further adding that while Cement Road would be open to devotees for going to the Mount, Kane Rd would be the Exit Road. AOCC took up the issue of the closure of the road with His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias in July itself, this year. Since in the earlier 2 years, the Police In-Charge kept pointing to the safety of the shrine, Adv. Joe Sodder sent an email in July to His Eminence requesting that the road be opened to the devotees. In a reply to Joe Sodder (encl 1) the office of the Archbishop informed “that the Priests at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount will request the police to facilitate transport for aged and sick people wanting to come to pray at the Mount” At the instance of His Lordship Bishop Agnelo Gracias, AOCC secy Judith Monteiro coordinated a meeting with the necessary authorities at the Basilica & Police

offices. Then, the group met with Msgr Nereus Rodrigues, Rector of the Basilica. A letter from the Rector (No Objection to opening Cement Rd to pilgrims) has been handed over to the Bandra Police Station. Earlier in the evening, the group met with DCP Pratap Dighavkar (Traffic) regarding the Cement Road & allowing of private vehicles / Rickshaw / Taxi carrying aged, handicapped persons (accompanied by 1 person) to be allowed entry from Mehboob Studio to the Basilica. Unforgettable Chimbai Village Under the brilliant moonlit night, in our friendly Chimbai Village and the warmth of an indigenous community; the closing prayers of the week long Novena kick started on an appealing spiritual theme. Our Lady of Velankanni’s statue stood graceful in dignified attire on the evening of September 08, 2014. Matching the monsoon madness, the East Indian people spilled out of their comfortable spacious homes; onto the brightly colored festooned lit street - joined by their Mangalorean and Goan neighbors in communal solidarity. Mrs. Margaret Quadros, a tireless veteran, led the congregation into prayer. Traditional hymns in Marathi, sung with a passion; added local flavor to the service. Over a thousand strong Catholic crowd prayed fervently, responding reverently to the decades of the Rosary. The ambience resonated with voices raised in unison, echoing the sentiments of a grateful community. Coincidentally, Hindu members in the village were celebrating the last day of Ganesh Chathurti Festival. Dressed in their finest clothes, the procession of men, women, senior citizens and children, inched their way through the overcrowded street, flanked by Novena devotees. A poignant scene, wherein the mov-

ing cart carrying elaborately crafted statues of Lord Ganesh were placed diagonally opposite the statue of our Lady of Velankanni, evoked communal respect. Fr. Joe from St. Andrew’s Church, who graced the occasion, concluded the service on a religious note. As families, singles and children walked in line to pay homage to our Lady, an unmistakable camaraderie friendship and bonding set the perfect ambience for festive mood. Loudspeakers magnified the exotic infusion of western and Indian mixed songs. Mouth watering dishes were laid out on open tables. A ‘chota peg’ wrapped up this quaint village scenario like a picture postcard. Music pulsated in rhythmic sounds, drawing the young and old onto the makeshift street floor. An excited, engrossed crowd encouraged a group of young boys who danced to ‘Johnny Johnny’ from the movie ‘Its Entertainment’. The next dance act was by talented girls to the popular hit song ‘Chikni Chameli’, that almost went viral. The night closed on a memorable tempo, reiterating Chambal’s motto to enlighten, entertain and engage its community in the most delightful refreshing way. A die hard devotee couldn’t have asked for more. Lancy D’Souza

Dighavkar, while assuring permission; also directed the group to Sr PI Pradip Chavan of the Bandra-Mahim Causeway Police Station, who assured full co-operation and will be assisted by volunteers sent by the team. Judith Monteiro, secretary, AOCC: “We thank His Eminence Cardinal Oswald Gracias, His Lordship Bishop Agnelo Gracias, Msgr Nereus and Sr Police officials for their intervention & co-operation. This year, we are able to sort out the issue well

in advance. The Church and the devotees can now concentrate on a Prayerful novena to our Blessed Mother whose birth date falls on the 8th of September. The weeklong celebrations can now follow in an orderly manner”. Adv. Joe Sodder, CPF : “The fight for Cement Road was taken by us (CPF, AOCC, CROSS, MCYF) since August 2012 (attachment 2 - article of MidDay 2012). We are happy that the DCP of Bandra has assured us that Cement Road will be open to the pilgrims to go up to the Mount from Cement Road”. Savio Miranda, CROSS said: “A Peace March was called for and organised by CROSS on 15th August, 2014; which was supported by other organisations. We were happy to see the crowd come out in large numbers in support of the protest which was for the continuation of the Bandra Fair, Safety of the Devotees & for those who oppose the fair. We are glad Cement Rd is being reopened to the devotees”. Brief background : Since 2012, the groups (AOCC, CPF, CROSS & MCYF) have ensured that the Cement Road was not shut, thanks to the intervention and good offices of Addl. CP Nangre Patil, DCP Dighavkar & others. Judith Monteiro

BJP President Amit Shah visits ‘Murudeshwar Mandir’ replicated at Bandra Reclamation

(L to R): Poonam Mahajan, Adv. Ashish Shelar & Amit Shah at Bandra Reclamation

Adv. Ashish Shelar MLC, President of the Vandre Sarwajanic Ganesh Utsav Mandal, who have replicated the famous Murudeshwar Mandir of Karnataka at our very own Bandra Reclamation. This structure is around 45 feet high & 90 ft long – and made with eco-friendly material: fibre & mud, with the ground area of laddi (stone tiles). Designed by Art Director Vilas Katvate, it took 80-90 workers around 45 days to be built – working around the clock, under the watchful eyes of Jitendra & Prashant Raut. Babloo Dalvi is the organizer at the Mandir. We were told by Jitendra Raut, that once Ashish selects the Mandir to be built at the Ganesh Utsav Festival; he and his team, consisting of Prashant Raut (BJP Ward President), Vilas Katvate, Sunil Parab and their photographers visit the actual Mandir location, do a case study – and take photos from various angles, while gathering the information needed to create the replicated model at Bandra Reclamation. Ashishji’s approval paves the way to go ahead with the project. Prashant Raut told us, that the fibre statue of Lord Shiva is about 25 feet high. Other statues of Demon King Ravan, Narad Muni, Lord Vishnu, etc. are made of mud; except the Lord Ganesha statue, which is made of POP. He elaborated that this Mandir depicts the story of Lord Shiva and his devotee (Demon King Ravan), who with the blessing of Lord Shiva; became very powerful on being granted the ‘Shiva Linga’. Then, Bhagwan Ganpati Bappa tricks him into losing the ‘Shiva Linga’ – and as a result, all his powers. Recently, Mr. Amit Shah visited this Mandir at Bandra Reclamation; to take blessings from Lord Ganesha. Among those present were BJP Mumbai President, film actress Rohini Hattangadi, along with a host of other film stars and dignitaries. Also present was Mrs. Alka Tai Kerkar, Municipal Councillor – and now, Deputy Mayor of Mumbai. Sir Minaz

EDITOR'S LETTER SEPTEMBER IS ‘SO SPECIAL’ Dear Reader, September in Bandra is always special – after all it is ‘BANDRA FAIR’. A time, when lakhs of the faithful from all faiths, come to the Basilica of Our Lady of The Mount – each for their own unique reason. It is imperative to mention, that they come to Bandra; as pilgrims from all corners of the world. Physically tired, yet spiritually strong – they are drawn here, by the sheer power of their faith. Now, Bandra is centre-stage to Mumbai. Can we Bandraites, be gracious hosts to these souls, who have arrived here after travelling several kilometes? Why are some of us trying to slowly erode the flow of the faithful, by blocking key connecting roads? Is the BMC and the Police, helping people with vested interest usurp the public Cement Road? Are pilgrims not entitled to use access routes that have helped them get to the Mount for centuries? Is money more important than your Creator? Protestors, activists & advocates are working on a POA - and will leave no stone unturned, to see that justice prevails. Yet, under currents are actively promoting their candidate for the upcoming assembly elections. These days, there are more carrots than sticks – just to gain that precious vote. And… with free Wi-Fi at premium hotspots across Bandra, Khar and SantaCruz; the world is your oyster. The next couple of months will be deciding time, as we are at crossroads to choose who will be our next MLA. Do we want change – or prefer to continue? Our destiny lies in our hands. This is the time for promises and distant dreams. It is all part of the political power play - and is essentially a numbers game called ‘democracy’. Bandra Buzz is evolving. We are upgrading with newer technology – to give you better facilities for citizen involvement in issues that affect them. You will have access to address your problems, directly to the authorities that matter – and get answers in a public forum. Transparency will be the name of the game. After all, as citizens residing in the ‘Queen Of The Suburbs’, we need the very best, in all areas of our life. As Bandra braces up for festive fervour, there are plenty of events coming up – and Bandra Buzz, your favourite neighbourhood newspaper will keep you in the loop. So, be prepared to enjoy the joyful times that make memorable moments. After the monsoon, September is our stepping stone month to thrilling times that take us to year-end celebrations. Till then, take care.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR BANDRA FAIR The Bandra Fair is not just a ‘fair’. It is part of the culture of Bandra - and I just can’t think of Mount Mary's birthday without the Fair… the fun and frolic, the din and clatter. My mom got married & came to reside on Chapel Road in the forties – and we were born in Patkar Nursing Home (Sushma's) facing the Arabian Sea, Bandstand B.J. Road. Since the forties, my mom would visit the Mount Mary Church, on the 8th of September every year - and offer prayers to Mother Mary. We children too were similar and carried on with that, even after she passed away. Bandra Fair with all its paraphernalia including the September Gardens... the stalls & the din & noise is all part of the Feast - and most importantly part of Bandra. The Bandra, I don’t want to change... ever. It is NOT, only a Catholic affair... it is of ALL Bandraites. I am sure the people who are opposing have a personal and vested interest, which is not bona fide. Their evil intentions should be nipped in the bud & they should be treated with the contempt that they deserve. So be it. Sudhir Kamath Bandra Fair needs better management. Every year, the increasing crowds are a nuisance to all those living in & around the Fair. This discussion has been had every year for a few recent years. Those in favour of the fair should step up & be proactive. They should form action groups coordinating with the local authorities for better crowd management & traffic management. Having a discussion each year without some positive outcome is pointless. I vote for only the devotion to Mother Mary to be continued in full earnest. The fair has become a stupid ritual. The Fair should be allowed only in designated areas like Supari Talao, Mt. Carmel’s Church Compound, St. Peter's Church compound, St. Andrew’s Church compound. Please help to keep Bandra noise & pollution free. Conrad John Aranjo Rich people buy apartments in high rise buildings - and then they get together to trouble the original residents in their small old cottages. Bandra will not be Bandra without the Christian community. The reason they (outsiders) came to Bandra in the first place, was because of the Christians - and their happy and peaceful lifestyle. Now, they want to change that lifestyle ? Ernest Flanagan Who the hell is this SRK to whom the Police are so interested in giving "security". This star is here today & will be gone tomorrow. 20 years from now people will say "SRK" who? But Mother Mary will be remembered & venerated as done for in centuries past and for centuries to come. Ashok Saldanha E. I. POLITICAL PARTY I am glad to know, that East Indians have decided to take the path of forming a new political party. It is a very good move for the East Indians, who have been marginalised and side lined ever since Independence. They are the original inhabitants of

Mumbai. Their forefathers have been the land holders of vast property in Vasai, Malad, Goregaon, Bandra, etc. – with huge pockets of salt pan land and marshy mangroves in Wadala, Kalina, Borivli, etc. This decision to form their own Political Party and field their own candidates is a bold, yet positive step in the right direction. With Adv. Godfrey Pimenta spearheading and contesting against the sitting Congress MLA Baba Siddique from Bandra Consituency, it will be beneficial to all the Catholics who have been victimised and robbed of their ancestral land, by the land mafia. Sharon Fernandes WARODA ROAD ISSUES Residents of Waroda Road are very badly affected by garbage bins that are not regularly emptied by the BMC. This results in spilling over on the road, making it dirty. Thus, hygiene is compromised, leading to a health hazard in the entire area. Also, illegal encroachments of houses onto surrounding land is rampant in Ranwar Village. Two wheelers in Ranwar, are parked in a very haphazard manner. This stops rickshaw access to people who live in houses that are inside the village - and seniors are affected the most, as some find it difficult to walk to their homes. This harassment and civic issue should be resolved by the concerned authorities, as living here is becoming more difficult day by day. Veronica Lasrado SILLY CROOKED CHEMIST Your bold newspaper headline in the Bandra Buzz August 2014 issue, has highlighted what we common people face for no fault of ours – except that in our tension, we overlook being cheated. However, it was silly for the chemist not to put his shop sticker over the MRP printed on the box. He has dug his own grave, in spite of his crooked ways. Strict action needs to be taken against Metro Medical – and other chemists like him. Karim Sheikh CROSS CLARIFICATION We the CROSS boys, would like to bring to the notice of the general public, that we do not support any other organization / family trust foundation / and NGOs asking for money, under the CROSS organization’s name. CROSS consists of Lawrence D'Souza, John Manuel, Dinesh Shelar, George Miranda, Savio Miranda & Minglu. As per the article printed in your August edition, we want to clarify that we have not been asked, regarding the issue, nor any permissions have been given by us. Footprints on the Sands of Time After a quarter of a century, it would be worth our while to briefly revisit Russell Pinto's inspirational life and legacy which have left indelible footprints on the sands of time. His death was only a little more dramatic than his action-filled life. I hope that someone someday makes a moving film on this touching life motivated by the thought that a good man never dies and a great soul lives forever. Deeply depressed by his failure in a college exam, Russell was lured to a psychedelic world of hallucinations. The drug world is a scary one and Russell shuddered each time he narrated his horror story. Entwined in the tentacles of drugs which devoured his body for eight years, Russell passed through the jaws of hell! He took every drug available in quantities and mixtures that reduced him to skeletal proportions. From a deadly daily injection of morphine he found himself taking it every 15 minutes! Plus, he was smoking about 80 cigarettes a day. He saw two of his friends kill their mothers and five others die on his lap from an overdose! Thrice he attempted suicide by taking an overdose himself! He reached a stage when he could find his veins to take an injection. This went on simultaneously with lies and thievery of household objects, notably precious jewellery including his mothers

wedding ring. His 78 year old mother frequently wept and prayed for him with great fervour. One day he was returning from a Grant Road joint when his cab providentially broke down at Mount Carmel's Church. He clearly heard Fr. John Hoey, an Irish Redemptorist, say: "Jesus can can free you from all addictions". Later, he met the priest. For the first time in his life, tears rolled down Russell's cheeks and he started on the road to recovery. After a few months, from being Bombay's King Drug Addict Russell became Bombay's most famous crusader against drugs. Detoxification and reformation of addicts became his mission, testified John Lobo, former CBI Director. Deaddiction, indeed, became Russell's new addiction. With missionary zeal, he opened a brand new chapter in his life and became a one-man crusade against drugs. In 1982, Russell established the Seva Dhan Foundation, Bombay's Pioneer Narcotics Rehabilitation Centre (for alcoholics and drug

addicts), of which he was Director. In all the Centres Russell established, the poor were graciously accepted and treated free of cost. He was conferred with several awards for pioneering work and attained both national and international recognition and appreciation. Alas, and shockingly, the drug world suddenly lost its leading light and Seva Dhan its guiding force on September 4, 1989. Sucked into the sea by treacherous waves, Russell's drowning on Baga beach in Goa sent shock-waves in the city's Christian Community and beyond. The tragic death of this celebrity healer who won the hearts of all, in the prime of his life and at the zenith of his humanitarian service, would be among the saddest in human history. Nevertheless, Russell's spirit lives on as a beacon light to all on the drug-driven road to destruction. There was immediate evidence to this effect. According to Betty Gracias, one of his close associates: "Mr. Pinto would continue to be a tremendous source of strength and encouragement to

the de-addiction programmes. When the drug addicts heard the news of his death they were determined to change their lives". Also, the late poet and writer Dom Moraes, who was Russell's friend, observed: "Russell having done it, the addicts of Bombay flocked to him for salvation, as to some newly arisen Messiah". Being an inspiring role-model will be Russell's noblest and most enduring legacy. His spirit also lives on in the Seva Dhan Foundation in Dahanu, Thane. For 32 years, the centre has treated over 20,000 substance abusers from around the country. Russell's cheerful but resolute widow and soulmate, Clema, cofounder and Executive Member of the Governing Body which runs the Foundation, is dedicated to sustaining his lifemission. Those who have a drug or alcohol problem and well-wishers and benefactors may kindly contact her on 9833908361 (M) and 26439126 (L). God's blessing on and our sincere gratitude to all counselors, benefactors, collaborators and trustees (Chairman Joe Lobo, Raphael Donald, John Lobo (Emeritus) and Fr. Nigel Barrett) associated with Seva Dhan Foundation. Dr. Louis D'Silva

EAT OUT

NOT JUST NALLI NIHARI Did you hear that Bandra has yet another restaurant that’s trying to win over local tummies. Luckily for them they don’t have to try too hard. Introducing ‘Bhaijaanz’ true to its name their cuisine brings you the most popular dishes from the Muslim fare and also offers you a few Parsi delicacies in a way you haven’t eaten them before. Brought to you by Mr. Zafar Sayed who’s family has been in the industry for over 30 years and ironically they are also the owners of the pure veg. restaurant Shree Sagar located in Bandra on 16th Road. Together with friend, co-owner and Chef - Tabrez Shamz who mastered his craft in London for 15 years at Radisson Blu, this dynamic duo are ready to reinvent some of your favourite dishes. So if you’re ready to invite new flavours to indulge your palette then ‘Bhaijaanz’ is the place for you, humbly nestled in the green canvas of the Shirley Rajan area in Bandra, their kitchen impressed me the most. In clear view through the glass partition as you enter their restaurant the kitchen is where Chef Tabrez has the most fun. Pulling together dishes that we’ve grown up to knowing and falling in love with, by turning and twisting them into something definitely worth having an affair with. I’m still talking about the ‘Butter Chicken’ and ‘Dhansak’ so be rest assured that I only indulge and endorse variety in food and food alone. We started our meal with one of their popular dishes ‘Chicken Bhara’ which apparently already has a large fan following even though they’ve only started flaming their burners a little over a month ago. I’m already salivating as I write about the next entrée that we were served, the infamous lamb chops! Every cuisine has its own

Nalli Nihari

way of preparing these and my favourite has been the Mediterranean way so far but ‘Bhaijaanz’ definitely gave that some succulent competition. The chops have a very interesting flavor that not only enhances the meat that its marinated in but also allows you to sink your teeth into memories of masalas that we’ve encountered over the years. Something that you should note and that will make every carnivorous around roar is that they don’t serve very many vegetarian dishes. Precisely two dishes in their menu of starters are dedicated to the leaf hungry. However the chef is kind enough to dish out a variety of vegetarian fare if requested in advance. We had the pleasure of tasting a Kofta curry and couldn’t resist the Paneer right out of the tandoor sprinkled with curly grated cheese that definitely sent my dairy affair into over drive. Even though most of us in Bandra would rather stay at

Co-owners: Chef Tabrez Shamz & Zafar Sayed But for those of you who like to put tobasco on everything you inhale be sure to ask the chef to make it a tad spicy for you as their dishes tend to use more flavours that enhance the eating experience rather than chilly that can often just close up your taste buds. A friendly Chef Tabrez and his partner Zafar endeavor to bring you a special experience by offering you dishes that are close to their hearts inspired by their lives, loves and longings from along the way of their gastronomic journey. home and order in, since everyone in the greater city of Bombay trudges down to this Queen of the Suburbs to dine out leaving little space for most others; I would recommend eating the hot tandoori rotis and naans, that are crisp and yet light seconds after they come out of the tandoor and are introduced to your plate! They serve most of the dishes that you would expect to eat at Mohammed Ali Road especially during the religious season of Ramzaan and their large silver scaled utensils peering through the glass kitchen window will definitely have you reminiscing. Be it Nali Nihari or Mutton Biryani I think its safe to say you will be coming back for more.

‘Gaonti’ and Broiler Ande Ka Funda You remember that advertisment on TV with Sanjay Dutt, Ande ka Funda … is mein chepa hain jivan ka phal sapha … yeh nahi pyare koyi mamooli funda! And that my dear is the whole truth of an entire egg. The entire egg is a unit of life and eaten as a whole, that is, yolk and white (ovalbumen as its called scientifically) together in partnership makes it a successful, wholesome, nutrious meal. DESI ANDA OR GAONTI: The Queen of all Eggs, very tasty with deep yellow-orange yolks and when you go to a shop and the shopkeeper there sells you an egg for 10 rupees (i.e. Rs. 120 per dozen) and the egg looks more like a quails egg small and the shell has an offwhite hue, it feels heavy when you lift it for its small size, then you can be sure that, that egg is defintely worth 10 bucks. Its the healthiest egg from a free range chicken organically fed on grass, hay, and other grains. These highly prized, healthy eggs are hardly found in Bandra, except outside Kalidas' stores Bandra Bazaar (Rs. 120 per dozen), and outside Sahakari Bandar on Bandra Talao road (Rs. 84 per dozen). You can also buy these eggs from near Khar and Santacruz station, Mahim and Worli (Rs. 96 per dozen). There is no garuntee that these eggs are genuine desi eggs as many egg dealers informed me that some shopkeepers take the smaller eggs put it in a pot of brewed tea and let it dye naturally to an off-white colour. There is also another chemical available in the market which can discolour the egg to make it look like a desi egg. ENGLISH ANDA OR BROILER: Big white eggs lighter in weight with lighter yellow yolks, the hens that lay these eggs are fed on proteins, antibiotics and some hormones or vitamins. I recommend the use of these eggs in baking for cakes and cookies, quiches, or as binding agents in kebabs, burgers and in food like fried rice, and egg curry, anything that needs the eggs to be over cooked. These eggs do not have high nutritional values. Easily available all over Bandra, BUT and the big but because shops side-byside sharing a wall with each other can demand different prices for their eggs. The best example of this is Cafe Delight Provision Stores and Restaurant on Hill Road charge Rs. 54 per dozen & Rs. 60 per dozen respectively, thats absolutely ridiculous. THE EGG HUNT: Most shopkeepers prefer to sell only the English or Broiler eggs as the unrelability of fake desi eggs is too high. Most shopkeeper will not deliver eggs as they might break while being transported to your home. Since, most people have to actually, physically go out & buy eggs on their own shopkeepers quote whatever rate they feel like because they know you are too lazy to search for the cheapest egg, so they use that to their advantage. And, as one shop charges Rs. 40 per dozen another might charge Rs. 70 (with reference only to English or Broiler eggs). In an area like Pali market where only one shop sells eggs (i.e. Meghna Agro) and he knows a guy driving

an Audi or BMW will pay Rs. 70 for a dozen eggs, rather than in Danda where there are more shops that sell eggs, and cater to a lower income class. The competition between egg shops is to sell all their eggs before they spoil, so more egg shops in an area means competitive prices of eggs, so you might find shops next to each other selling eggs at different prices. ENVIRONMENT

A fistful of DIRT! 11 million people and growing. 7000+ tonnes of municipal solid waste per day. Add the two and you have a rapidly rising mountain of ‘kachhra’ threatening to distort the city’s landscape. A scenario straight out of an animation film, only this one’s a reality for Mumbai. And more serious. Living in a tree-lined & well-appointed Bandra, you wouldn’t believe the amount of garbage that rides through her streets each day. Each one of us generates around half a kilo of waste every day. If that’s hard to believe then take a look around your house & even your office. The bigger of the various waste ‘streams’ runs straight from your kitchen into the bin. And this matches statistics that point out to wet organic waste as the major component of all waste. More than 50%. Now a fact like that would mean nothing to you. But tell that to someone like Christopher Pereira and you’ve landed an invitation for a beer at the Bandra Gymkhana. Well, I did! It wasn’t the Gym we met at, but his brand new venture ‘DIRT’ located on the street running alongside Mehboob studios in Bandra. Chris has been helping families compost their wet waste for some time now & when he met Natasha, they decided to set up DIRT. The idea was to create a learning space for techniques & demonstrations on using waste as a resource; creating compost with wet and products with dry. DIRT offers training as well as the complete kit to families & housing societies as a waste management solution. By using one of their kits, a family can reduce their outgoing waste to almost zilch. In return they receive compost which can be used for growing plants. Recyclables like plastic, metal and glass

is handed over to recyclers. Institutions & building societies could go in for large composting solutions which work just as well. But where in space starved Mumbai, does one grow plants you ask? And what about the stink that waste breaking down is supposed to cause? Christopher had an answer for every question. “If you have the will to do it, you will find a way”. Plus the health benefits that come from growing a small herb and vegetable garden are countless, he says. Looking around Dirt you will find samples of attractive and useful products hand made entirely from waste plastic & glass. So even your recyclables have a chance at a new life in the hands of Natasha D’costa. She takes plastic bottles that you & I would chuck without a thought & sees possibilities in them you couldn’t imagine. Taking pride of place in the shop is a chandelier made from plastic bottles but looks like a piece of art made with exquisite, expensive materials. Who would’ve thought waste could look that good? Natasha’s creativity knows no bounds.

She also makes lamps from bottles designed to light up even a discerning designer home. Give her your plastic and she’ll give you a possibility. The second time I went over there was with my hoard of beautiful blue and green bottles, (not a sign of how much I knock back, I have guests :), hoping Natasha does her magic with them. And I’ve planned to go over next weekend to pick up my family composter. What are you waiting for? After all haven’t all of us been taught to clear up after ourselves? Can we try to reduce the garbage we pile up so it doesn’t pollute the futures of our kids? It’s not hard to imagine a cleaner city, not with the people at DIRT on your side. You can reach Christopher and Natasha of DIRT on dirt.upcycle@gmail.com or 9833949145. Sonal Alvares

Good, Clean Learning & Fun - for just Rs. 1500 a month - Believe It or Not Although, going by the name of the place, 'Maker’s Asylum,' you could expect to see chaos and confusion galore, the reverse is true. The place, though devoted to creativity, is organisation personified. The brainchild of four enthusiasts with a vision, Kirti Shetty, Vaibhav Chhabra, Anool Mahidharia & Samarth Shah, it exists like an oasis of ‘Do it Yourself’ among the vast sea of dependency on others such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians, which our society is plagued with. What exactly is the Maker’s Asylum, what does it do, and, more importantly, what can YOU do here, are a few questions which we'll answer today. The place can be defined in may ways, all of them appropriate. It can be defined as a 'Gymnasium with Tools' to work with instead of dumb-bells and bar-bells. People from all walks of life Artists, Engineers, Hobbyists, Doctors, Business people, come here and connect. They are free to come with designs in mind for anything they wish to create from wood, metal, plastic and the like, use any of the plethora of tools provided (including a 3D printer), create their prototype for business or fun, and take it back with them, something worthwhile they've actually created with their hands. Internationally, this concept is very popular and highly evolved. In the U.S.A. schools have a 'Shop Class' where these skills are taught and learned at a young age. The culture of DIY (Do it Yourself ) is firmly established in Western society. There are many such community collaborative spaces, known as 'Maker's Spaces,' all over the

world. Vaibhav Chhabra, one of the founders, was part of a similar concept called Artisan's Asylum in Boston, where he did his engineering. Maker’s Asylum is the first of its kind in India, having taken root in its present location at Hill Road in March this year. The culture of DIY arrived a little late in India as we get labour freely, easily, and at relatively low rates. At the same time, access to equipment and workshops is not easy for most of us. Maker’s Asylum is here to change all that. Everything you see in this space is made by the member enthusiasts and the volunteers who pitch in enthusiastically to

help out. The tables, the shelves, you name it, its all made in-house. As mentioned, in this space is a 3D printer, a machine to cut wood, soldering stations, prototyping tools, and all round you see the results - small robots and clocks and toys made by members. The place is a platform for all to come and meet an interesting group of people. For example, artists as well as engineers would come here and talk on the same topic, but look at the topic from their unique perspectives, combine their talents, and come up with something never seen before. Musicians come and make their instruments

using the 3D printer. (The charges for using the 3D Printer are a very reasonable Rs. 150 per hour, inclusive of the raw material needed) An architect comes and '3D print's out' his concept in physical form. Similarly, people from all backgrounds come here, share ideas, use the tools and equipment provided, and walk home proud and happy with a sense of fulfillment and achievement. The membership fees are extremely reasonable at just Rs. 1,500 a month, which gives you access to the space (open 12 noon to 9 pm, seven days a week), as well as access to use all the tools (Vaibhav says you can also break them, though not deliberately, of course, as anything that is broken can be fixed), and members are also entitled to discounts on events. They have plans to expand and branch out, as the concept is rapidly becoming popular. Their next big event is coming up on the 20th of September at Studio X, Fort, Mumbai, which promises to be huge learning and great fun. The event, which includes a documentary screening on the Maker's Movement around the world and a lot of fun events, is free for all. You just need to register on their website - www.makersasylum.com. Once a member, you can spend all your free time here, paint, play music, work on whatever interests you, and have a good, clean, fun. So what are you waiting for? Enroll for the event coming up and see the team in action, and be a part of the early movers in this DIY culture which is guaranteed to take the country by storm. Cyrus M. Gonda

De-Clutter with Feng Shui

1. The first thing to do is to turn off the phone and the TV, put on some energizing music.

Bring in Fresh energies for the Festive Season

2. Start small & never start with the worst area of your home, office or garden; start with the one that has the least clutter. That way, you have a small victory to start this process. Clear the clutter in just one area on each day. Don't risk burnout by trying to do it all at once.

Are you overwhelmed with all of your 'stuff'? Are you feeling 'stuck'? Are you ready to clean up and clear out? Are you ready to bring in the Festive Season filled with new fresh energies?

Here, we are again on the threshold of the Festive Season. How can we move ahead to welcome this Festive Season and get past some of our problems? One of the things that could be holding you back is clutter. In Feng Shui, clutter represents stagnant energy. For energy to flow harmoniously through a room, clutter must be removed. Feng Shui can help you create and achieve improved health and finances, increase abundance levels and better relationships by just clearing clutter. Before you start applying Feng Shui principles to any area of your home, office or life, you must de-clutter.

Clutter can be everywhere! In your home, your office, your garden, even your car. It collects too easily. It accumulates little by little until it becomes overwhelming. Clutter affects our energy levels & general wellbeing. It can weigh us down both physically and emotionally. If you walk into your house and all you see is stuff everywhere, from the clothes piled all around in the rooms, shelves stuffed with books and knick knacks, it's easy to feel frustrated and depressed. Ask yourself if any of these "symptoms" are found in your home or office… • Do you have piles of magazines and newspapers waiting to be read, mail unanswered? • Drawers and cupboards bursting with stuff and old clothes you are keeping ‘just in case'? • Broken furniture or appliances that need to be fixed? • Piles of stuff in corners waiting to be sorted out? • Memorabilia or gifts that you really do not like? • Office desks and cupboards overflowing with unused, out of date material? If you have, then you are suffering from clutter! Tackle your clutter NOW & get the energy moving for you. The checklist outlines the steps you should take to DE-CLUTTER:

3. You can choose to start with the front hall, or a few bathroom shelves. Whatever area you choose, keep your goal simple, and be certain that you can complete it in one brief de-cluttering session. 4. Weed through your belongings to see what you're going to keep. Love what you have and let go of what no longer serves you. Sort things into four categories: Things to keep where they are; things that you need to relocate; things to file/ fix/repair; and things to discard/give to charity. 5. You may use cardboard boxes, grocery bags, or simply stack things in piles as you sort. You'll also keep a trash bag nearby, for discards. 6. Trash & de-clutter ruthlessly. It's the perfect time to give or throw away unused clothing, shoes, accessories and other things that you haven't used, worn, seen, read in a year. Removing all this stuff allows the energy in your home to move more freely around. 7. If you see that you have a ridiculous number of things in one category, choose a num-

LIFESTYLE ber before you start sorting. Decide, "I'm going to keep just six pairs of shoes," or, "I only need three spatulas in my kitchen." Then, stick to that number. Keep your favorites & give the rest to charity or throw them out. 8. Do not be tempted to back-track. The more you see it, the bigger the chance for you to easily reach back into the trash bag or charity box & say, "Oh, maybe I should save this." Thinking "this might come in useful someday" is one of the leading causes of clutter in the home. If you give into this thought, you will be running round in circles. 9. Finally, pause and celebrate. Take a walk outside, or give yourself a small reward. When you return, admire your work, and choose another area to organize next. 10. Lastly, space clearing helps let go of any low and negative energy residues. The easiest way to space clear a home is by smudging, burning incense, diffusing essential oils into the air. Clearing your clutter can completely transform your lives. So get set to welcome the new Festive Season & have your space ready to help you attract changes/ experiences/ people/ things you want the most in your life. By Maria Hussain

Baba Siddique's Pro People Initiatives ENHANCEMENT OF HEALTH FACILITIES AT BHABHA HOSPITAL Bhabha Hospital, which is located on Waterfield Road in Bandra West, has been serving the public of Bandra and surrounding areas since several decades. Recently, in an effort to enhance the medical facilities at the hospital; which in turn would ensure quality medical care to patients, around 3 Neo-Natal ventilators, 6 Photo-Therapy units, 6 Baby-Warmers and 10 Syringe-Pumps were made available to the Bhabha Hospital. In addition, an eight bedded multi para monitor, with central station & anesthesia work station (1 no.) will be provided soon. This initiative and effort was taken by Baba Siddique & the same was graciously donated by actress Katrina Kaif. The units have proved to be a shot in the arm for the Bhabha Hospital management, who were quite grateful of the gesture. Health is wealth, as they say - and all efforts are taken to ensure that future citizens of Bandra get the best medical attention that they can get through such initiatives. BEAT INFLATION WITH AFFORDABLE VEGETABLES & FRUITS The recent price rise on a variety of commodities has made life difficult for many. From petrol and vegetables to railway fares; everyday necessities are becoming more and more expensive. In order to beat inflation, we started with an initiative of setting up centres for selling vegetables and fruits at affordable prices on a weekly basis. This fair price market is an important aspect for the community as fruits and vegetables should be affordable for everyone. Everything available at these centers are sold at approx. Rs. 15 to Rs. 20 below market prices. Fresh vegetables are brought from Vashi APMC - and are thoroughly washed before they are put up for sale. These vegetables and fruits are sold daily in some localities and on fixed days in areas like Pyari Nagar, Danda Naka, Salsette DPRC Ground and Khar Gymkhana. Subsidized vegetables and fruits have helped to beat inflation. FOGGING: BATTLING DISEASE AT YOUR DOORSTEP To create a healthy environment in the Bandra Khar SantaCruz areas, and avoid dengue, malaria, etc., Baba Siddique provides citizens with a Fogging Helpline : 96645 67890 (11am to 6pm). YESTERYEAR MEMORIES

The Bandra Feast of Yore September means it's that special time of the year again, the birthday of "Saibini Mai" of the Mount in Bandra celebrated as the Bandra Feast. This is also the time to get nostalgic of days gone by when the Bandra Feast an eight day affair, was truly a family celebration, planned with a meticulousness and fastidiousness of a military campaign. The only time when the GEMs i.e Goans, East Indians and Mangaloreans forgot their differences and behaved like - gems! We were privileged to be living in a very vantage location on Hill Road, right at the foot of the Mount. The annual preparations began with the Novena (9 days of devotion). In our school days we made the Novena at St. Andrew's Church, just across the road. We could cross the road without any fear of being run over by a taxi. But believe me attending the 0630AM mass every morning for nine days was quite taxing on the young masses. I guess the get together promised to all those who completed the Novena, was no small incentive! The project in charge (in today's language) was Msgr George Fernandes a martinet with a heart of gold. He also insisted that we come to church with flowers; for which we were given daily numbered coupons. Those who collected all nine coupons were entitled to attend the get together. Needless to say, to keep the supply chain of floral offerings going, the gardens of our neighbours, were ruthlessly stripped of flowers especially the colourful phlox that were in bloom in that season, every night! Those who got caught, were treated to some very flowery language! Since the pilfered flowers were offered in Church, we never suffered any pangs of a guilty conscience for committing daylight sorry nocturnal robbery. Life those days was so uncomplicated. The St. Andrew's Novena days were in the years when we were still wet behind the ears. As we grew up, we graduated to trudging up the Mount. I remember lots of buses emblazoned with names like Ave Maria, Stella Maris and so on, full of office goers raucously singing hymns. They came form Santa Cruz, Mahim, Mazagaon and Girgaum- Kotachiwadi. Those days masses were held in the main Basilica and not in the gargantuan sophisticated shamiana that is erected in the tarred compound of today. The nuns from Mount Mary’s Convent and the Franciscan Brothers with their distinctive brown cassocks and glum looks, from Borivali would be in full strength, standing at vantage positions with their donation boxes. Despite the hot sun they never seemed to break into a sweat. At home, Mummy, Dad and my sisters were here there and everywhere, rushing at a frenetic pace to get everything ship shape for the big day. Our cousins from Byculla and Mazagaon who were permanent invitees for the festivities, invariably trooped in on the preceding Friday night. We children waited patiently in our ground floor balcony waiting for the inevitable influx of taxis, excitement mounting with each passing second. In

all there were not less than 20 inmates at our place. You can imagine the confusion and bedlam prevailing, enough to drive any sane person around the bend. Fortunately those were the days when people had immense patience, tolerance and very big hearts. The more the merrier was a maxim they swore by. The night before D-day was one of hectic activity. New clothes had to be collected from the tailors by the women folk (there were no Shopping Malls then), the poor tailors were literally coaxed, cajoled and threatened in that order, to meet the deadline. Not for nothing is it said that hell hath no fury like a woman who is not donned! For us guys, it was an occasion when most of us got to wear our first suits. Yes that's how important an occasion Bandra Feast was. The night before was also one to make a little cash. For the princely sum of about one rupee, we boys polished shoes and ironed clothes, for the laid back. The cash went into the kitty to spurge at the fair the next day! The next morning, we trudged up to the Mount in two's and three's. The ubiquitous candle sellers all along the winding route, thrust their candles into our faces. The self-conscious suit wearing ones, willy-nilly slipped into the category of "Uncles" and were hounded much more than those of us who only sported ties! The smart RSP boys and girls looked very important controlling traffic with the regular policemen. In strategic corners, coin changers sat, ready to change high value notes (Rs. 100/-) for a commission of course. Notice how some things from Biblical times never change? Finally we reached the Basilica. The sight of the Benevolent Anqua- re, Mari-ea all resplendent in her birthday finery, inevitably a striking crimson sari, never failed to mesmerize and instill a sense of awe in the devotees. The multifarious congregation of devotees of all creeds and castes, flocking to their Mother Mary, in a never-ending stream, carrying their offerings of flowers, candles and wax images, is a sight for the gods. The walk back home was always through the fair behind the Basilica. This was just to take stock of what lay in store, before our long awaited foray after lunch. Many traditions stand rock solid. The soap bubbles blown in your face, by the vendors, the smell of roasting chana, the sizzling kadio bodio, Kerala halwa every where, motor boats with careening round and round in little tubs, the off key singing gana wallahs, the outlandish studios with their mock Chevrolets, Impalas, Taj Mahals, popular film stars, with whom you could strike a pose, all beckoned tantalizingly. For me and my companion and cousin Olando, the well of death with that dare devil Valentine on his raucous smoke emitting motor bike, was the star attraction. Later on, during our Goodbye Sam – Hello Samantha days – the Giant’s wheel would be the star attraction, of course! We made a mental note of what to sample and walked back for breakfast, already transported into another world. The highlight of the Bandra Feast was un-

doubtedly the grand feast lunch. With all the Aunts pitching in with their culinary skills, the typical Goan repast would make a king drool and dribble like a baby. Sanas, chicken xacuti, sorpotel (to this day no one cooks it better than Mummy and she’s all of Ninety), promfret rechado, bread fruit, Russian salad, devilled eggs, rice, pulao, tangy stew (Dad's contribution) and in later years some East Indian influence, with tongue moile, vindaloo and fugias making an appearance. We gorged. Those were the days when you lived to eat not ate to live! Calories and cholesterol be damned. Who heard of them anyway? Lunch was always followed by a singsong with my sister Mercy on the good old-fashioned Piano (no Casios then) and brother David on his Spanish guitar. We siblings may not have always sung in tune but our enthusiasm and joie de vivre was infectious. The music was a mishmash of oldies, mandos and masala. After the singsong and before the Elders retired for their siesta, came the event we waited for with bated breath. The doling out of "baksheesh" by the Uncles to the children to splurge in the fair. Oh how elated we were on receiving the same. Of course we did make the appropriate noises of gratitude and halfhearted at-

tempts at not accepting the largesse. This always went down well with them. Behind our country bumpkin exteriors, we had a natural flair for psychology! Those were the days. The noise, the hooting of horns, the pick pockets, the Chinese Gardens (later September Gardens) with its Whist Drives, the Wig Wam, where live beat groups played and you could send requests to "the girl in the blue bell bottoms, sitting near the entrance from a secret admirer wearing a checked shirt" for just One Rupee! The Giant wheels, the entertainment stalls viz. magic shows, the girl with no hands who did normal chores with her legs, the laughing mirrors with their distorted images, the road side khaleji stalls, the sticky candy floss…. truly those were halcyon days. Today, well I guess, no one has the time or inclination to ring in celebrations the way our parents did. That era has ended and is now a part of folklore. Today there are protests against holding the fair. So very unfair!

YESTERYEAR MEMORIES Bandra Fair is being celebrated year after year, the Fair brings all people regardless of religion, status together spreading message of faith, love oneness. I remember my childhood when it was not a gadgets era, I would wait for Bandra Fair as it was family and friends reunion time, all uncles, aunts, cousins friends would get together and go for the Fair as it would be showcasing wonderful Indian handicrafts, toys, kitchen sets, piggy banks, water boats, wooden artifacts, and delicious sweets, variety of foods and air being filled with sounds from different musical instruments, be it flute, whistle, the merrygo -rounds, balloons, dolls, hoopla, and much more. The joy happiness experienced is still treasured in my mind and whenever Bandra Fair come it makes me a kid once again by taking me back into journey of my childhood and I remember all the mischiefs, fun I had with one and

all who were known to me and who were not and the message it taught me of love and oneness will always be treasured for ever. Archana Sharma For a person born and brought up in Bandra, the Fair is a significant part to one life at different stages. As a kid going to The Mount for the novenas and on the feast day getting crushed by fat aunties wearing 5 kgs of gold and dripping with sweat were memories that can never be forgotten...walking down the steps was another experience, except that it had its rewards at the end, some goan sweets and some ice cream once down. Then once or twice during the week, subject to tutions..all our click of friends made sure we attacked the rides....The Giant Wheel at St. Anthony's Aged Home

SEPTEMBER 2014

was a killer, the speed could make a dead man scream, but none louder the the girls. Youth days saw us getting involved in organising events. Being in the Youth for Youth, WIGWAM was our calling. Organising the events there, we had the time of our lives. The King and Queen contests, kiddy fancy dress, house, cake decoration and salad making contests, and of course the evenings rocked to the tunes of Crimson Rage, Infra Red and the sensational group Fame with Kim Cardoz setting the place on fire with his performances. Post marriage sees more home and family celebration and prayer time together. Maybe a stroll through the fair to relive our nostalgic memories, have friends and family visiting. No classes on Bandra Feast weekend, my students are told...for Home is where the heart is....And mine is in MY BANDRA Fabian Namory Yippee! It's that time of September for every Bandraite again. The delightful week-long carnival that always manages

to give ''bubbles'' in the tummy and ''Pom Pom'' Happy Hello's. From the exciting shopping and homely food stalls to the thrilling street events, games, amusement rides and concerts,The fair doesn't ever fail to greet everyone with its overwhelming smile. For us it maybe another year of Joyful September but for Bandra it's a feast of blissful togetherness and treasured rememberance. That is why I don't think one should forget if a Koli Fisherman didn't have to dream of finding a statue of our dear Mother Mary in the Arabian Sea,Bandra surely wouldn't have been blessed with it's all-popular and memorable 'Bandra-Fair' to celebrate our beautiful Mothers Birthday. So this is to you my fellow Bandraites,Go make your bandra-fare to remember! Anushka Dutt
