Ian Cooke

The Flight I Flew Kevin Johnston

BandWagon Magazine

Denver music scene icon/ Greeley kid Ian Cooke leaves us with a night-sky full of memories after 15 years. The Flight I Flew is an homage to his 2007 debut The Fall I Fell which put him on the cello-based progfolk map in Colorado. There’s a map for that, right? The new album, allegedly written under starlight exclusively, parallels the vastness of the cosmos with that of love lost and found, released upon Cooke’s end as a Colorado resident this fall. Producer and long-time band mate Ian O’Dougherty, stalwart bassist, singer, cajonist Whit Sibley and multi-instrumentalist Jamie White touch the record with a mid-eastern pulse of tabla-like percussion, toy piano and upright bass throughout. Soaring strings from Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra Concertmaster Chris Jusell bring

Flight to the highest production height of Cooke’s career while the planetary distance of his yearning is thumped out in the band’s mysterious, spacey rumble. Opener “Beam Of Light” features Cooke’s dense, cryptic lyrical cadence beautifully countered by a downright Bela Lugosi-esque harmonized refrain of “cosmic illuminaaation.” “Feel Every Move” evokes an almost “Eleanor Rigby” pomp beneath Cooke’s nimble melody which “gains velocity” as it expresses his mastery of the musically complex. His compositional risks take the listener on a well-worth-it journey across his emotional universe. “Nine Moons,” the record’s swerves peak, emotional through uncertain piano plinks in a minor key landing us on a Beatlesque, jazz-shuffle verse. Arpeggiated keys and percussive sunlight-swish heighten our feelings in the break, eventually twisting towards the climax of Cooke’s heartfelt falsetto: “I know I’ll never love anyone the way I love you.” There is an innocence and awe in Ian Cooke’s music. He is a true musical individual who manages to weave hearton-sleeve honesty through a dance-like tapestry of melody, rhythm and lyrical intrigue. Those searching the skies for unexpected beauty need fly no further than this.

False Report

Your Addiction Sleeps Tonight

Noel Billups

BandWagon Magazine

Your Addiction Sleeps Tonight is the newest EP from the Denver based pop-punk band, False Report. The four-piece has steadily been putting out quality releases since they released Same Mistakes in 2016. The EP is deeply personal with intricate instrumentation. The opening track, “Submerged”, coasts along at a solid mid-tempo, driven by Joe Bruno and Andrew Lopez on drums and bass respectively. Lead singer and guitarist Alan Andrews delivers catchy melodies that flow right over the intricate guitar work. Towards the end of the song, Andrews lets loose with his vocals, saving his screams for only the most intense parts of the music. The following track, “Thrown Away”, may be

BANDWAGON MAGAZINE | 6

the most typical “poppunk” sounding song on the EP, but the band spices things up. While most of the songs have a minor tonality, the verses and chorus of this song take advantage of a major key, giving it that “pop” energy. The pre chorus introduces tension with dissonance before resolving into the chorus. The way they introduce interesting harmony into pop-punk makes for their distinct sound. Right smack dab in the middle is one of the best songs on the EP, “Balcony”. The song is high energy and in your face with solid guitar riffs backed by tight playing from the drums and bass. The key that this song also perfectly suits Andrew’s voice. It embodies everything that the band is about in a neat little package coming in just under 3:15. False Report is a solid band and Your Addiction Sleeps Tonight is a solid EP. If you’re a fan of pop-punk you will definitely dig this album. Be sure to catch their EP release on 1/11 at the Marquis.

Vektroid

Seed & Synthetic Earth

Jay Wallace

BandWagon Magazine

Vaporwave is probably one of the most niche music genres in existence, as well as the only one that the Internet could claim as its own. Mostly found on Bandcamp, Vaporwave is a nostalgia-tinge, remix-heavy genre of ambient electronic music

that sets out to recreate mall music/elevator music of the 1980s and 1990s. It’s name is a take-off of Vaporware, a tech industry term for hardware that never really existed outside of tech demo and trade shows. And the most prominent artist of Vaporwave is Vektroid. Born Ramona Andra Xavier, the Portland, Oregon-based musician released in 2011 Floral Shoppe (Under the name Macintosh Plus) considered by many to be the album that popularized Vaporwave. Vektroid stopped releasing music regularly in 2013 – Floral Shoppe was

one of nine albums she released in 2011 – so when she does release something, Vaporwave enthusiasts take note. Vektroid’s latest release, Seed & Synthetic Earth, is unique because unlike Vektroid’s past work, it consists of more electronic musical composition instead of relying on sampled smooth jazz and synth music like most Vaporwave artists. In comparison to her peers, Vektroid possesses a certain consistency, song-to-song and album-to-album, that other Vaporwave artists don’t normally have. This is usually because other VW artists use for a wide array of samples in their work making every song

sound tonally different. Vektroid in general limits her pallet, such as using songs from a specific time period, artist or genre. While Seed & Synthetic Earth consists of more original compositions, she still limited herself to a couple choice beats, musical keys and tones, leading to that same consistency and making an album that sounds complete, and uniquely Vektroid’s work. Vektroid has made an excellent electronic music album, perfect for listening to in a Toyota MR2 while blasting through tunnels late at night. Those interested in electronic music and ambient music, listen to Seed & Synthetic Earth. You will not regret it.

Staff Picks | 105.5 The Colorado Sound

AIRING ALL ALONG THE FRONT RANGE!

RON: Alex Lahey The first few seconds of the first track of Alex Lahey’s I Love You Like A Brother feel like the engineer accidentally started the tape early. It’s an indication of the “relaxed yet tight” sound of this Australian 25-year-old. Then “Every Day’s The Weekend” takes off like a moon shot. The album barely slows down, save for a couple tunes. I can’t help but reminded of my initial impression of fellow Aussie Courtney Barnett. Alex takes that ‘70s female punk attitude and makes, what I call, her “Blood On The Tracks,” with only a couple guitar solos. Take the album as a whole and you’ll hear her mature take on young love gone bad (“It’s hard for me to put my arms around you when you’re backpack’s on.”) As one reviewer said, “Get hip to Alex now before she’s playing SNL.” STACY: Charlotte Gainsbourg Actress and musician, Charlotte Gainsbourg, daughter of Serge Gainsbourg (arguably one of France’s most revered musicians) has released an achingly pretty pop album Rest. This follow-up to her 2009 release IRM, features collaborations with Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Canadian composer Owen Pallett and Sir Paul McCartney. Sir Paul not only wrote “Songbird in a Cage” for Charlotte, but makes a guest appearance on the track playing guitar, drums and piano. The album, recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York is an intimate portrait of sadness, loss and longing masked by Charlotte’s breathy vocal style and lush production. But don’t let the subject matter fool you, she’s created a beat driven, orchestral, pop romp that even turns an homage to Sylvia Plath, “Sylvia Says”, into an utterly upbeat tune. Slipping seamlessly between French and English, Charlotte creates a moody soundscape that’s cinematic in its scope while still being intimate. BENJI: Daniele Luppi & Parquet Courts At first glance, this looks to be a rather unlikely pairing but once you get past the initial shock of teaming an Italian film composer with the Brooklyn postpunk outfit you realize this is a match made in heaven. The song comes from “Milano”, Luppi’s tribute to Milan in the ‘80s, spotlighting the decadence and deviance of the time. The city was alive, and the possibilities appeared endless. Soul and Cigarette shares this optimism opening with the whimsical sounds of a glockenspiel and containing lush lyrics that are rich with imagery. Parquet Courts approach this song in the same manner as the Modern Lovers or Pavement with a reserved style that holds back but, you know they could unleash power on a moment’s notice. Soul and Cigarette is one of those unique songs that transports you to a time and place far away and makes you never want to leave. MARGOT: Upcoming 2018 Releases Good news, music fans, a slew of new releases are scheduled for 2018! In January alone, Calexico is releasing their ninth studio album, there’s a performance of from Big Star recorded in 1974 called Big Star Live At Lafayette’s Music Room coming out, as well as new albums from First Aid Kit, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, tUnE-YaRdS, and the first of 3 EP’s from Belle and Sebastian. Past January, Jack White is set to drop an album, Superchunk are releasing their first album in four years, and MGMT, Loretta Lynn, The 1975, Interpol, and Moby all have albums on the way. In hot “rumored to be released in 2018” news, there might be new albums coming from Arctic Monkeys and Vampire Weekend. Along the way in 2018, we’ll look for new discoveries and introduce them to you as well.

Jones County, Georgia musician Demun Jones is almost the last person you’d expect to draw musical inspiration from hardcore gangsta rappers N.W.A — but don’t judge a book by its cover. Jones has been rapping along to songs like “Fuck The Police” and “Straight Outta Compton” since the ‘90s. “The fact that N.W.A was giving me the experience of living in their environment,” Jones explains. “Living in Jones County was nothing like Compton, California, so it was intriguing. I was drawn to the aggression of it as well.” While The South often gets a bad rap for being racist, country bumpkins, Jones is adamant that’s not the case. He was exposed to all different kinds of musical genres growing up — not just banjo laden country music. In fact, one of his biggest influences was the late pop superstar Michael Jackson. “I understand the history of our country and am fairly well read when it comes to the actual facts, and not just what the nightly news is blasting,” he says. “That’s a whole chapter of a book by itself, so I won’t give history lesson. “In my home growing up, I was exposed to Motown and Marvin Gaye as much or more than I was exposed to Lynard Skynard and AC/DC,” he continues. “Michael Jackson was probably the first human being that really made me want to be on a stage performing.” In terms of the current sociopolitical climate dominating the headlines, he believes the “evilhearted folks” ruin it for those

who simply have Southern pride. “I think the recent social distress regarding race has nothing to do with a large group of people, it has more to do with political agendas that thrive off of negativity,” he states. “I will say that evil-hearted folks walking around waving Rebel Flags make the regular guy with a Rebel Flag sticker on his truck look like onein-the-same, and that’s just not the truth. We can’t look at 1863 through the lens of the present and get the truth. The truth is many folks in the South think of it as a symbol meaning “The South” — period.

“I don’t spend much time trying to combat that. I let my actions as a person and a musician speak for themselves. I think racism is either a mental condition or just stupidity.” Jones is hitting the road in support of his latest album, Jones In Ya Speaker. The 11-track project is a gumbo of his various influences and features guest spots from Upchurch The Redneck (yes, that’s his name), Durwood Black, Noah Gordon and Charlie Farley. Part hiphop, part rock, part country, it’s essentially a taste of Jones’ personality in album form. “I think my environment helped me greatly,” he says. “Combining that and hip-hop was very natural because I was always in the country, but I was always in love with hip-hop music. It became evident over time that most — if not all hip-hop — was

not directed at folks like myself because none of the artists were from places like Jones County. Not being represented in a culture that I participated in heavily only drove me to make even better music and to direct it at folks that grew up like me in places like I grew up. “Country folks have always supported hip-hop, spent millions and millions of dollars on hip-hop albums and concerts,” he adds. “Now, they get to do that but spend it on artists that understand what their life is all about and represent them and their lifestyle because we actually live it, too.” One of his most personal songs, “Suspended,” took seven years to write. When he started writing it, his older brother Chris and younger sister Jessica were alive. By the time the song was released, both of them had passed away. “I was in the studio recording it when I received the news of my brother passing,” he says. “He hung himself in 2006. That has been the hardest thing I’ve experienced in this life. My sister Jessica passed away in 2004 in her sleep at age 23. She had a very rare condition, Rhett’s Syndrome. She was disabled her whole life but the loss was not any less because of it. I loved her the same as if she would’ve been an Olympic runner.” His brother’s death changed Jones’ outlook on suicide as well. “It’s cliche to say folks are cowards that go that route, but my brother was no coward,” he says. “He was one of the bravest human beings I’ve ever come across.”

Kevin Johnston | BandWagon Magazine Conflict leads to tension, tension leads to resolution, and resolution feels good. Denver indie-pop group Wildermiss combine rhythmic and harmonic tension with the charttested power of repetition to create an intriguing pop record worth several spins. First looks at front-woman Emma Cole and crew on stage may conjure comparisons to the likes of Sylvan Esso (who Wildermiss routinely cover live), but don’t be fooled. This female led synth-bass band are shoegaze guitar kids at heart - Heart they carry all the way through their debut EP Lost With You. In the tradition of bands like Metric, Cole’s feminine vocals drift through proper rock-band structures set forth by drummer Caleb Thoemke and guitarists Seth Beamer & Joshua Hester, though taking a dominant role as hook-master. That said, the foursome each contribute compelling and noticeable edges to the mix with their rare twin-guitar, no bassist set up. The band’s

BANDWAGON MAGAZINE | 14 BANDWAGON MAGAZINE | 14

aforementioned tension keeps the pop-repetitions of “Lost With You” feeling like they’ve always been a part of you. Full-on indie-rock guitar chops and rim-click drive are brought to the EPs opener “Between Two Rooms” - a telling relic left over from the band’s pre-frontwoman days as Red Fox Run. A waterfall of major guitar scales breaks up an “oh oh oh” rollercoaster pre-chorus with the punchy half-time hook of “I - I - I can’t seem to get this right - it never ends.” “I fell in love with you today,” the innocent beginnings of “Carry Your Heart,” find unexpected harmonic twists upping the emotional ante at its epic finish. Yet, a toy-piano / handclap breakdown of the chorus and a signature triple-shout of “hey” reminds us we’re really just hearing four friends making music together.

“Vivian” begins with a Television-like stereo guitar syncopation framing Cole’s ethereal, wordless chorus with atmosphere akin to Death Cab For Cutie’s Transatlanticism. Here, her voice comes from dark corners without consonants to bursts of crisp, hookladen sunshine in an instant.

“Keep It Simple,” arguably the most memorable contribution off Lost With You, gives us an undeniably catchy “ooh ooh” hoot as it’s hook; like a coffee-house singer’s song turned dancefloor holler. A final push of delayed guitars provide a bed for the EPs finale “Pieces,” which finds us awash in a stardust middle-space between “Anthems For A Seventeen

Year Old Girl” by Broken Social Scene and Interpol’s “NYC.” Wildermiss’ mix of intimate vocals, ingenue synth-pop, and kids-with-guitars-in-the garage make them what they are above all else: likeable. The energy and honestly in Lost With You make them a team you can’t help but root for. Get ready to press (you guessed it) repeat.

When Silver & Gold began five years ago in Greeley, Colorado reaching the point where they were releasing material and actively touring was a distant dream. At the time, most of the band were students at the University of Northern Colorado and had the youthful exuberance of a group just beginning to get their feet wet in the industry. Rosy cheeked and ambitious, Silver & Gold put together an alternative rock set that we can safely say in hindsight was not very good. But, it’s also safe to say there was something to their music, something special that lifted them up amongst their peers. Maybe it was their understanding of melody; maybe it was their goofball stage banter. Whatever it was, audi-

ences were starting to tune in. Now, five years later I’m sitting with lead vocalist and guitarist Devon Hildebrandt at a coffee shop in Greeley (where the band still resides) after the band just got back from their second tour of the year. The rosy cheeks and the freshman fifteen are gone, replaced by the tired resolve of a musician who’s been driving a van too long. “Maybe we’re playing our instruments better?” Hildebrandt says with a laugh, looking back on their early days. Currently made up of Hildebrandt on guitar and vocals, Clair Jensen on vocals and keys, Pie Lombardi IV on lead guitar, Brandon Vela on bass, and Taylor Drose on drums, Silver & Gold has more than just

become better musicians, they have found the rhythm to being a professional band. A Silver & Gold set is a much different thing now compared to when they began. While their music is lumped into the alternative rock genre, their sound has taken on a heavier and more melodic quality over the years. Taking full advantage of their classical training from the University of Northern Colorado Music School, Silver & Gold incorporates intricate timing and chord changes, all while still maintaining an accessible pop sound. According to guitarist Lombardi, the best description they received on their recent west coast tour was a, “heavier Death Cab for Cutie.”

After a string of EPs and singles, Silver & Gold is releasing their first full-length album titled Point A – Point A, a move that for Hildebrandt represents much more than just the checking of a box on the list of things bands are supposed to do. A concept album, the title Point A – Point A is a reference to the circular nature of life, and finding yourself back at start after a long journey. Solid, wondering, and concise, this album taps into a sense of happiness and loneliness all at the same time. Each song pushes the album’s concept to the front, always resolving nicely back at the beginning but taking the winding road to get there. “We challenged ourselves a lot on this record. These songs are

hard for us to play,” he says with a laugh. “We wrote hard songs.” Hildebrandt establishes himself as a great songwriter and vocalist, and on the surface it’s his voice that drives each song. Soaring and angelic, it’s easy to buy what he’s selling. But behind him is a band that so clearly feeds him what he needs to pump out genuine emotionalism. “Pie’s lines pulls us through and really dictates where the melody goes,” says Hildebrandt. “The lineup we have is just so phenomenal. Taylor and I have been playing music together since we were 14… and Claire is just stupid good at everything.” Recorded in Denver in the home studio of Mickey Postillion of the band Overslept, Sil-

ver & Gold began tracking in April of 2017. Due to scheduling conflicts and their obligations in the real world, recording took longer than expected, but in the end the extra time allowed them to fully develop the songs. The final product is the band at their best, taking that special something they’ve always had and cranking it as loud as it will go. So, maybe it’s their understanding of melody, maybe it’s their goofball stage banter; maybe it’s both in some strange way. Whatever it is, it’s got great sounding guitars on it. Get ready for one of the best local albums of the year and make sure to be at their album release January 19th at the Moxi Theater.
