Bones Muhroni Grounded
Jed Murphy
BandWagon Magazine
For the first time going into the recording process Crew Reinstra found himself the principle songwriter for Bones Muhroni. A band to come out of Greeley and winner of the BandWagon Battle of the Bands in 2011, Reinstra, Ryan Wykert, and Chris Jones who made up the band at the time moved to Los Angeles together. Now, fast-forward to 2017, Jones got married and moved back to Colorado to be close to family, and while Wykert is still in the band, he is tied down by several other projects. This left Reinstra flying solo creatively and to make the record happen, he decided to take a few steps back. “My neighbor had this eight track recorder. I’ve never produced myself before so I just started to record. At first random songs
then some stuff I wrote in high school and early college and just changed some of the lyrics to fit my life now,” says Reinstra. Grounded is full of that basement recordings lo-fi vibe, and it compliments the quirky, folksy, almost rhythm and blues style friends and fans have always known from Bones Muhroni. The guitars resonate nicely across the album and Reinstra’s playful vocals and style are at their best. “A part of me was afraid to release it because it was so raw at first. I had gone through a couple different friends to master it. That was hardest part actually to make these lo-fi tracks sound good,” says Reinstra. Those looking for studio perfection might be turned off at first by this record, but the final product is solid. Something to be noted about Grounded is we find Reinstra fully embracing that weird, comical and humorous side of his song writing that he has danced around in the past. While Reinstra has always been a serious songwriter humor has always found a way into his music. “I was pretty depressed when I was recording the whole thing,” Reinstra says with a laugh. “But I think that’s just how I deal with shit is with humor. I’ve just accepted it as a writer.”

Civilian
You Wouldn’t Believe What Privilege Costs
Ellen Hamilton
BandWagon Magazine
With their latest release, You Wouldn’t Believe What Privilege Costs, the band Civilian’s indie rock album is bound to remind you of something old and new. Based out of Nashville, Tennessee, with this album the duo Ryan Alexander and Dan Diaz continue their journey which they state is “to make the world a better place”, specifically through music. A bold statement but filled with proof after hearing the different tracks on this album. This Nashville duo is no newbie when it comes to finding their own sound, although there is a reminiscent feel to the album drawing comparisons to Ben Gibbard and Band of Horses. There are
BANDWAGON MAGAZINE | 6
new sounds to be heard throughout the album from the first track “Skulls” that opens in brief accapella to the last “Judas” with a harsh closing statement of “I am not damaged, just discouraged”. The rock vibe comes out right away with the opening of the second track “Reasons”. Civilian brings together the acoustic and soft sounds of indie music and incorporates a style that is distinct. Their song, “New Love” is one of these tracks that identifies Civilian as paving their way into the genre of indie rock. The elements that bring this album together are aspects that are unique to each song, especially in “Fear and Trembling” where emotions run high. This album pushes listeners to move past the familiar sounds and find the drive and relatability in the lyrics the band is trying to communicate. There is a discovery of worth and potential behind Civilian as the comparisons to other artists diminish and their music becomes heard.
Kris Lager
Rise and Shine
Andrew Stiegler
BandWagon Magazine
Rise and Shine is another big step forward for the Kris Lager Band and offers fans a satisfying place to return to. This album proves they really know how to deliver solid blues and rock tunes, but it’s some of the funk and R&B tracks, that don’t quite add up. I get it, they want to
explore some different tunes and create something unique but KLB fans know what they want and it’s the blues. “I Got Love”, sustains a prettiness with a roaring opening sax groove that pairs nicely with Lager’s inspiriting vocals. Then it’s back to the blues for the melancholy “Knee High by the 4th of July” where Lager’s addictive slide riff and Haley Marie’s backing vocals are the special ingredients that make this song superior to its peers. It’s not the familiar blues tune we’ve all witnessed but something of a higher caliber. “Love Can Get You By” is a heartfelt tune that you can feel in Lager’s voice. His gentle tone proves his words to be true, “Sometimes you just
got to close your eyes/But love can get you by/ Yes, I believe love can get you by.” The song details what it’s like to be on the road chasing down your dreams and finding a reason to keep going. “Please Don’t Break Me Down” and “Shake it on Down” are the blues tunes we’ve come for. “Shake it on Down” is brilliant. The groovy number displays Lager’s far-out vocals and the top-notch quality production of the album. Lager has had some form of the band touring since he was 17, now 34 his experience has proven him to be a successful songwriter. He says of his writing, “At this point in my life I’ve been in love, I’ve been out of love, I’ve dealt with a lot and I don’t have to make it up anymore”. In the end KLB offers a sound that few other modern-day bands can offer.

Shelby Taylor-Thorn | On Air M-F 3p.m.-7p.m. SWMRS – Palm Trees SWMRS had us at the first ‘left foot yellow,’ while playing Twister backstage at Hodi’s in Fort Collins last summer. They had painted fingernails and ‘Xs’ on their hands, which is kind of surprising when you take a listen some of the lyrics their album, Drive North. In a time when most young artists are producing vapid electro pop songs, ‘Palm Trees’ stands out as guitar-driven punk with actual substance. Weezer – Feels Like Summer My reaction on first listen: I love this song. I hate that it’s Weezer. At the end of the day though, a good song is a good song, and considering what global warming is doing to Colorado right now, it does feel like summer – so just enjoy the damn song and forget about the fact that it would never have made it onto the Blue album.

It isn’t something we get a lot of in alt rock radio, but like Cage the Elephant’s ‘Cold Cold Cold,’ we’re noticing a bit of a ‘60s revival trending, and can’t turn down a good, nostalgic dance track.
The Orwells – They Put a Body in the Bayou It’s a tossup between ‘Palm Trees’ and ‘They Put a Body in the Bayou’ for edgiest song on our playlist right now, but in an effort to #MakeAmericaPunkAgain, we’re happy to welcome both to The X. STILL AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME Kyle Eustice | BandWagon Magazine Rap titan Tech N9ne (real name Aaron Yates) is sitting in his Star Coach tour bus behind the Slowdown music venue in Omaha, Nebraska, where he’s presumably getting ready to take material from his latest album, The Storm, to the stage. Fully stocked with a bed, shower, toilet and an entertainment center in the back, the bus is a symbol of the undeniable success he’s attained since establishing his Strange Music, Inc. imprint in 1999. Based in his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, the label now houses a massive roster, including Krizz Kaliko, Rittz, Murs, and Ces Cru. Not everyone, however, is impressed by his “rock star” status. “It’s hard because as you’re
BANDWAGON MAGAZINE | MARCH 2017
going up, the people that had been there with you, it seems like some of them don’t want you going up,” Tech explains. “That’s why I wrote ‘Dying Flying.’ I have a goal that I haven’t reached and that’s why I’m still going full speed ahead.” From massive international tours to heading the label, Tech is clearly a workhorse and he’s nowhere near ready to put the mic down. Looking from the outside in, he appears to have it all, but oddly enough he doesn’t exactly feel that way. “I’m reaching for world domination and I’m on the way, but I’m not there yet,” he says. “I feel like I’m doing more work than ever. I’m happy that people are still latching on and getting on board.”
Beginning with his debut album, 1999’s The Calm Before the Storm, he’s put out another 16 studio albums, and is about to release his next collaborative project, Dominion, which comes only four months after 2016’s The Storm. It’s this constant musical output that put him in the spotlight and has kept him there since he stepped onto the scene. Surprisingly, he thinks he still has something to prove, but at the same time, carries an unwavering air of confidence. “I live life and write it,” he says. “Luckily life is still happening to me, but I still have something to prove because people are still talking shit, you know what I mean? They say, ‘Ah he’s corny. He wears face

So, you see, I still have something to prove. Some people get to that level where they feel they don’t have anything to prove, but I want people to know I put all my heart and soul into what I do, even if it’s a party track, rock track, gangster track—I put all my effort into it.” While Tech’s fanbase is a strange yet eclectic mixture of juggalos, hip-hop heads, frat boys, and Hot Topic-loving girls, people still want to box him into the “speed rapper” category despite the fact his catalog is about as diverse as it gets. “I think people have their preference and they see me
as just a guy who can rap fast, but I can do all kinds of flows,” he says. “That’s my thing. I am rhythm. They just get caught up on what they hear and what they hear might be ‘Speedom’ with me and Eminem, and that’s all it is. I ain’t never done a whole album like that. Some people just want me to do that.” At the end of the day, Tech is never “just a guy.” He’s one of the most accomplished independent rappers in the world, has packed legacy venues like Red Rocks Amphitheater, knows how to put on an incredibly engaging show, and last but not least, never stops creating. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his bad moments. He’s human just like the rest of us.
“I fight people all the time online,” he says. “I look at all the comments. I tell people to back it up and ask them what they’re talking about. They’re like, ‘’Oh that’s not Strange Music. I’m like who are you to say that? I started Strange Music. I’ve always been three-dimensional. Somebody was talking about the ‘Get Off Me’ track we just released and was like, “This is not Strange Music.’ Tech N9ne is three-dimensional. I said, ‘What’s Strange Music to you, brother?’ I’ve always had party tracks, too. It’s cool you prefer one dimension, but don’t come in here being one dimensional and I’m three-dimensional, then tell me I’m not Strange, when I am Dr. Strange. You can’t school me.”

hen it comes to colors in the rainbow, yellow is the loudest. And when it comes to personalities in the art and music world, Peelander Yellow, (sometimes known on planet Earth as Kengo Hioki) frontman for the action punk band Peelander Z is the same. With his yellow skullet, missing teeth, and ageless embrace of the punk lifestyle, Peelander Yellow’s vibrancy is magnetic and contagious.
F
or those unfamiliar with Peelander Z all you really need know to make your own assessment of the band is their official story is that they hail from the Z area of Planet Peelander. “Our mission is we gonna get smiles because Planet Peelander people eat smiles. We’re gonna get smiles here, that’s why we must get you happy we gonna get you to smile, and we’re going to send to them so they can eat,” says Peelander Yellow.
If you’re no fun and don’t buy into the whole Planet Peelander thing, they are a punk band originally from Japan based out of New York who make a living touring with one of the most outrageous and entertaining live shows in music today. With almost two decades of hard touring, eight albums, and a popular documentary called Mad Tiger on Netflix, Peelander Z has earned a fun and weird place in the hearts of music fans around the world. Leading up to their stop in Ft. Collins at Hodi’s Half Note April 11, the BandWagon got the chance to speak with Peelander Yellow about life on Planet Peelander and his life here on Earth. Yellow (Kengo) for all intents and purposes is Peelander Z. Since 1998 he has driven the band to success, maintaining an incredible and bizarre image that resonates with audiences. Initially, the Peelander Z experience comes off as a lot but that abrasiveness
becomes something you can’t take your eyes off of. With songs like “S.T.E.A.K.” and “So Many Mike” (because let’s face it, there are a lot of Mikes out there) things get weird at a Peelander Z show quickly.
“Everybody come to see. Don’t you worry about show I never bite you before show, I’m gonna bite you after show don’t worry… I never give up the punk rock life. Come to see the show and I give you my smile then you give me your pretty smile.” This is how speaking with Yellow is. Always walking a line between the character that is Peelander Yellow and being the “regular” person that is Kengo Hioki, he is always on. “I like the bananas and mustard and the eggs and the juice. I make my own juice… We come from the Peelander Planet. We are no human beings we came from Peelander Planet. I grew Yellow area that’s why my name is Peelander Yellow yay!” says Yellow with a laugh at himself. He then followed up slightly more seriously saying that the color yellow had always attracted him because it helps him stand out as a musician and an artist. To test his yellowness, the BandWagon staff had to
know where he stood on the ultimate yellow question: does he like pineapple on pizza? “I like pineapple because of the yellow color. It’s ok because I love Hawaiian food. Sometimes they have the rice and meat and pineapple together and sometimes Chinese food has pineapple and pork and rice together so adds little bit accent of life. Pineapple is the accent of life.” When not on tour, Yellow has established himself as a prolific visual artist and hosts his own show appropriately titled “I am Yellow”. But when it comes to the creative process, Yellow does not approach his art as he does his music. “Music and painting is sometimes little bit connect, but my feeling is painting is a different type of brain I’m using, and music is a different type of brain I’m using. Sometimes it’s relaxed, sometimes exciting, sometimes opposite way. So it’s all like the moon and sun, man and woman, so it always help each other that’s why I like both of them.” Peelander Z is a true musical experience for people open to seeing something different and outrageous. In both his music and his art, Yellow curates a unique experience where the main focus is getting people to smile. Of the many great shows happening in Colorado in April, this is the one you want to be at.

HIGH TIMES STILL FLOATING ON AIR Kyle Eustice | BandWagon Magazine
For
Devin The Dude, it would seem there is no better place to perform than Colorado. The weed-friendly state has more dispensaries popping up than it does Starbucks and welcomes anyone fond of its endless herbal treats. As Devin The Dude (real name Devin Copeland), prepares to descend on Northern Colorado in support of his new album, he’s undoubtedly looking forward to the perks that come with playing our great state. After all, the Houston native has been synonymous with marijuana for years now, however, it’s not necessarily something he sought out to do. “I’ve never thought about it really,” Copeland says. “A lot of people just kind of put that stamp on me. It’s not like I rap about weed a lot, it’s just a lot that I rap about has weed in it [laughs]. Every situation I go through regardless of what it is, weed is somewhere around it.” Originally signed to the infamous Houston label, Rap-A-Lot Records, which put out his first
BANDWAGON MAGAZINE | APRIL 2017
solo album, 1998’s The Dude, Copeland is now in charge of his own label, Coughee Brothaz Music. His latest (and tenth) studio album, Acoustic Levitation, is the second project he’s put out on the imprint and proof of what can happen when he’s left to his own devices. Simply put, the 14-track album is Devin The Dude in his purest form. From the chilled out title to track to “We High Right Now” with his old Odd Crew members, he calmly flows from song to song while maintaining his laid-back vibe.
“It’s just a part of me I guess,” he says. “Like Luther Vandross had his signature ‘Wooo wooo wooo wooo’ sound and this is my thing. I actually don’t even think about it. It’s something that happens when I start writing songs — somehow weed gets in it. But it was really nothing intentional unless the song itself is about weed. A lot of people want to do a weed song with me. A lot of times it’s by force and not by choice, but I don’t mind that at all.”
If Copeland did change his mind and wanted to disassociate with his staunch reputation as a weed connoisseur, he’d have a tough time shedding it. His own Wikipedia page mentions the fact that “he started smoking weed at a roller skating rink in 7th grade.” Duly noted (thanks Wiki). “And since then, that’s all it’s been,” he jokes. “And he raps a little bit [laughs].” Nothing could be further from the truth. Aside from touring religiously, he’s constantly working on new music, putting out albums and heading Coughee Brothaz Music, which allows him to release music from artists he’s admired. In fact, without his friends pushing him to do it, he might never have taken the plunge. “After I was off the label, the people around me were asking me what I was going to do,” he explains. “There were a lot of the people around me that was urging me to put out their albums. I was just like, ‘Ok cool.’ It was kind of the next logical step in my career. There’s always a lot of work to do, but that’s a good thing.”
