Pie Lombardi / Little Lights Split EP

Andrew Stiegler

BandWagon Magazine

The split EP by Pie Lombardi and Little Lights molds a certain beauty to a modern-day folk sound. It’s not just the graceful vocals produced by both Lombardi and Devon Hildebrandt, but the energy in their sound. Lombardi’s half offers some fresh material dripped in alternative folk. At first his tunes come across as another arrangement of sad guitar riffs and gloomy vocals. However, by the third or fourth time the liveliness to his soft melodies and calming voice begin to appear. “365” grows on you, feeling not only engaging but relatable. Lombardi defined “365” as, “An extremely personal song, recounting what it feels like to be overwhelmed by life, kinda like being lost in a forest.”

“Shadows” describes a combination of past relationships, and always falling for the people who don’t want you back,” Lombardi says. The songs successful in its attempt at emotional appeal, it just takes more than one listen to realize it’s good. At 23, Lombardi has been writing songs for about five years now, and the dedication shows in his music. The Little Lights duo of Delvin Hildebrandt and Samantha Brewer understand the alternative folk sound. Hildebrandt harmonizes well with Brewer’s backing vocals, creating a dreamy, lucid sound. The vocal outbursts and relaxed rhythms in “Thoughts in Figure” are submerged with intensity and talent, and the attractiveness of the vocals are inescapable. “Shoes by the Bed” dazzles, the poise of Hildebrandt and Brewer’s vocals sing a wistful number that meanders around the surface of your heart and doesn’t seem to wanna leave. Overall, the split EP between Pie Lombardi and Little Lights produces a wonderful alternative folk sound that is distinguished, poetic, and soothing. The album is layered with great material, the only thing lacking is a harder number.

Montoneros Good Bones

Noel Billups

BandWagon Magazine

Good Bones is the latest release from Denver-based, math rock band Montoneros. The self-proclaimed ”Mile High Twinklers” effortlessly combine intricate guitar riffs with catchy pop melodies that makes for an accessible sound that musicians and casual listeners can both enjoy. It’s obvious within the first few seconds of the opening track, “Not Now, Not Ever”, that everyone in the band is very technically skilled at their instruments, most likely coming from backgrounds in heavier music. However, they don’t let their chops get in the way of their songwriting. Pulling influences from bands such as Minus the Bear and This Town Needs Guns, frontman Gastón Leone puts his own signature stamp on Montoneros.

BANDWAGON MAGAZINE | 6

His voice and lyrical content put a pop punk spin on the band’s sound, opening up about vulnerable experiences that many 20 somethings can relate to. The following track, “Hold Yr Phones Tight 2nite”, is an upbeat tune that calls to mind early 2000s dance rock with the opening drumbeat. They make it sound so easy as the guitar parts flow in, out, and through each other as Leone’s voice floats effortlessly on top. “Pebbles Interluuude” provides some relief from the dizzying guitar counter melodies as the band trades in electric guitars for acoustics, vocals for a trumpet, and complexity for simplicity. It’s a nice little breather before diving head first into the final tune “Just Because I Don’t Care Doesn’t Mean I Don’t Understand”, an appropriate closer and the best track on the EP. Montoneros has a way of packaging the complexity of math rock with the simplicity of pop melodies into tasty little morsels. The longest song clocks in at only 3:15 and the EP may only be four songs long, but they’re can convey so much in a small amount of time.

Shelby Taylor-Thorn | On Air M-F 3p.m.-7p.m. The 1975 – Change of Heart This one falls more in the company of “Somebody Else” than the upbeat, 80s-influenced alt-pop songs like ‘Love Me’ and ‘The Sound.’ But, while the band’s latest ballad from I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It is undeniably totally depressing, it’s still somehow more of a banger than a downer. I’m also convinced only The 1975 is capable of pulling that off.

Seriously, it’s just kind of sexy and I’ve been wracking my brain for five minutes trying to think of a way to say that better and I can’t, so there. Bleachers – Don’t Take the Money Bleachers is baaaaack! Here’s a little ‘Easter egg’ for you: While you’re jamming to this one on 94.3 The X (Because, why wouldn’t you be?) listen carefully for a female’s vocals at the end of the song. That would be Lorde, whose single “Green Light” was produced by Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff. I imagine them in his fancy working apartment/studio NYC on their new songs together, and Lena Dunham is probably there somewhere, too, just hanging out. Ugh, Lena Dunham. Anyway – great song.

With their latest release, You Wouldn’t Believe What Privilege Costs, the band Civilian’s indie rock album is bound to remind you of something old and new. Based out of Nashville, Tennessee, with this album the duo Ryan Alexander and Dan Diaz continue their journey which they state is “to make the world a better place”, specifically through music. A bold statement but filled with proof after hearing the different tracks on this album. This Nashville duo is no newbie when it comes to finding their own sound, although there is a reminiscent feel to the album drawing comparisons to Ben Gibbard and Band of Horses. There are new sounds to be heard throughout the album from the first track “Skulls” that opens in brief accapella to the last “Judas” with a harsh closing statement of “I am not damaged, just discouraged”. The rock vibe comes out right away with the opening of the second track “Reasons”. Civilian brings together the acoustic and soft sounds of indie music and incorporates a style that is distinct. Their song, “New Love” is one of these tracks that identifies Ci-

REINING

IT IN STILL AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME

KEEP THEIR EGOS IN CHECK Kyle Eustice | BandWagon Magazine

BANDWAGON MAGAZINE | MARCH 2017 BANDWAGON MAGAZINE | 12

Egomania is defined as “the quality or state of being extremely egocentric,” according to Merriam-Webster. In the music business, ego can often cloud the better judgment of artists and other industry players and, consequently, become a huge turn-off for anyone who crosses their path. Fortunately, for the four South African brothers of the band Kongos — Daniel, Dylan, Jesse and Johnny Kongos — they basically have built-in moral compasses that allow them to check each other if they ever feel their egos are getting out of control. The group’s third studio album, Egomaniac, puts the topic front and center, and dives into the curious human condition. Although the brothers often go off on their own to write their individual parts of the music, they usually wind up with one, cohesive idea.

“All three of our albums have been written individually,” Dylan explains. “For this one, we started to notice this theme [of ego] and that’s what dictated our choices of songs that made the album. We saw this theme and wanted to make everything fit as a concise idea.” Admittedly, all four brothers battle their sizable egos at one time or another, but it’s something they are acutely aware of and have learned to reign in quite quickly. “Everything’s relative,” he says. “We have massive egos and I think everyone else has massive egos as well — from the common man to Donald Trump, but not everyone is necessarily aware of it. I think we’ve become hyperaware of those egos sometimes because we do have three other brothers that constantly call us on our bullshit.” That concept is illustrated repeatedly on Egomaniac, especially on songs like “Take It From Me,” “Look At Me” and “I Want It Free.” In fact, in the video for “Take It From Me,” their heads are quite literally being inflated with air, which is symbolic of the impact of the omnipresent ego. It’s something all four of the Kongos men have to remember to work on. “Ego is definitely a lot of what the album is about,” he says. “The lead single was ‘Take It From Me.’ On the surface, it sounds like a pump up song, but if you really listen to the lyrics, it’s about the impulse of the ego and how uncontrollable it is once that impulse begins, and how

it can take over your life. It’s something you have to reign in. It’s a lifetime pursuit to be able to do that.” Kongos have presumably already had their egos bruised once or twice along the journey from relative obscurity to sudden international notoriety. Before their music was featured in American commercials and movie soundtracks like The Expendables 3, they had fought to get noticed in the United States. It wasn’t until a South African radio DJ decided to take a chance on them and put “Come With Me Now” in rotation. Once it was popular in South Africa, it still took awhile before anyone in U.S. would play their music. They officially have Colorado to thank.

“Once the song hit in South Africa, it was still isolated to that area,” he explains. “We came back to the States and were still struggling to get people to notice us. Finally, a DJ in Colorado at KTCL picked up ‘Come With Me Now.’ That was really the turning point for us worldwide. When Denver started playing that song, it just exploded.” Now, as Kongos wrap up a South American tour, the group is focused on the next impending North American run and crafting the next album. Despite the misconception that being in a rock band is all “sex, drugs and rock-n-roll,” the Kongos brothers recognize it’s a job. They won’t be out getting wasted every

night and forgetting their names. Instead, they’re just going to enjoy the ride in the most professional way possible. “This was 10 years in the making and then it finally happened with us,” he says. ”We were thrown into a whole other level of work. Everyone has this idea that we’re out there partying and it’s just all ‘sex drugs and rock-n-roll.’ Yeah, there’s a little bit of that, but nowadays it’s different. “Those bands you hear of — these legendary epic rock and roll bands — they didn’t tour like bands do now,” he added. “We’re doing 200 shows a year and doing stuff like morning radio interviews. If you get fucked up the night before, you’re going to feel it the next day. You do that a few days or weeks in a row, you can’t do it anymore.” For 2012’s Lunatic, Kongos earned its most commercially successful album and surprisingly Egomaniac didn’t do as well as they had hoped, but Dylan explains it actually helped alleviate some of the pressure for the next project. “By the time we get into studio and are getting to final stages of the album, you lose touch with what it’s like to be on the road,” he says. “You’re just in your own world, doing the album, and then cycle starts up again and you’re reminded of the business, politics, and expectations of everyone around you. I think for this next album, we’re going to avoid those type of thoughts and write some good songs.”

ANVILLE

THE NEW KID on THE BLOCK Every once in a while a notable local rapper comes along, but few have blindsided the rap game like Angelo Robert Trevino-Villamil, otherwise known as Anville. In just 4 months he’s opened for multiple notable artists like Madchild, Krizz Kaliko, Kosha Dillz, OG Maco, and even Devin The Dude. Anville also performed an unofficial set at SXSW in Austin, Texas this year. His journey to this point has certainly been a testimate to his drive and ambition. Justice Council | BandWagon Magazine

Even from the beginning, Anville always told a story with his lyrics. Inspired by lyrical greats like Kendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak, and classics like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Anville takes pride in trying to live up to artists like this. In Anville’s debut album, “Thank You for Listening,” he embraces his true roots. “I gained the inspiration for the single from my stepfather. He was in a head on collision with a semi on his way home, that was one of the worst times of my life man. I spent so much time resenting him and just wanting my biological pops to be in the picture. I was blind to the man that was right there in front of me, trying his hardest to raise me like his own. He knew me when I was 5 and I didn’t let him in until I was about 14.” Anville’s step father is now a quadriplegic and Anville has stepped up to support his family. It’s this sincerity that Anville shares that forges a distinctive connection between him and his listeners.

This first album will be the very beginning of Anville’s journey. Even as thrilled as he is to be this far along, he knows there is a tough grind ahead of him. Once his first album drops, Anville will be right back in the studio preparing his next album, Ex-Games. The Ex-Games will continue to show Anville’s unique style and approach to music. “I want people to know that I bring something different to the table. I love soulful music but, I also love that Hendrix vibe too. I want to reach out to everyone. I don’t want to be stuck under some battle rapper or “only” rapper umbrella. I want to put Northern Colorado on the map and bring live music to my sets... bring soul to my sets.” Excited for the future, Anville is still living in the present and enjoying every second of this experience. Working closely with his Touch Productions family, Anville will be releasing Thank You for Listening at his album release party on May 19th at The Moxi Theater. Not only will this be a celebration of how far he has come but, a toast to the bright future ahead.

“That Guy,” Anville’s top single out right now, is a sneak peak into his album “Thank You for Listening.” The album is all about the young rapper’s upcoming telling us a story about his true roots here in Northern Colorado. Anville’s smooth lyrics that take you through his life journey, are a tribute to his love for poetry.

On Solid Ground Jed Murphy | BandWagon Magazine

If you were to ask around the city of Greeley who the best guitarist in the area was, the general answer will be Ben Pu. A few will make note of one of the students or faculty of the University of Northern Colorado’s jazz program, but to the regular folks who don’t frequent the UNC jazz recitals, Ben Pu, real name Ben Puchalski, along with his band, Ben Pu & Crew are our shining stars. A rare breed of actual full time musician (meaning he has no crap regular job) you can often find him playing several, if not every night during the week at various bars and venues in the Greeley and Northern Colorado area. His mastery of the guitar walks a line between mind-blowing and jealousy inducing on good days and only great on bad ones, and it’s this skill to convey himself through music that has literally kept him alive over the last several years. While Ben’s solo music has made him a sta-

ple in the Greeley music scene, it’s his work with his band, Ben Pu & Crew where you’ll truly find him in his element. A blues rock outfit made up of Matt Schooley on drums and Chris Manichanh on bass, the trio has been rocking stages large and small for years now, out classing so many bands along the way. A question many local fans and music lovers have been asking, for such a prolific group of musicians, where is all their recoded music? Over the past 15 years Ben Pu has been playing

PHOTOS BY TALIA LEZAMA | BANDWAGON MAGAZINE

music locally, and while he has an extensive catalogue of solo records that vary in quality, Ben Pu & Crew doesn’t have anything to show for it. Finally appeasing those long time fans, Ben Pu & Crew is finally set to drop their long awaited fivetrack blues EP titled Try Again Tomorrow.

Try Again Tomorrow is Ben Pu & Crew at their best and most natural. Recorded in the UNC Studios with local go-to producer Michael Olivier, these five songs capture the band in a raw and organic state. Mostly

sticking to the basics of guitar, bass, drums, and vocals, they tackle the blues aggressively and with a very live sound. “The whole vibe felt different, usually when I try to record I feel so stiff, even with my solo CDs. I’m not a huge fan of going into the studio, I get really nervous which is weird. I get more nervous recording in the studio than I do playing live,” says Puchalski. Going into the album, the band originally intended

to head in a more rock direction, but after demoing out the songs they found something wasn’t working. “We were listening back to the recordings we did of the rock stuff it wasn’t really hitting us in the right spot. We ended up playing this one song called ‘Try Again Tomorrow’ and we nailed it in one take,” says Puchalski. That song eventually became the single on the EP, shifting the band’s focus to the blues and found the missing piece of their puzzle in the process.

Moving forward, the short-term goals for the band are to push the release of Try Again Tomorrow and fill their lack of music gap. “We recorded a full album a few years back with a previous drummer. We did the whole thing but we didn’t like the sound and it’s never been touched. We just didn’t like the quality and it wasn’t a product we wanted to put out,” says Puchalski. As a full time musician based out of Greeley, Colorado, it can’t be understated the seemingly bizarre lifestyle Puchalski has chosen. “Well, I don’t get up in the morning,” he

says with a laugh. “I usually get to bed between 6 am and noon, which is pretty regular. When I get up it’s usually right before a show which could be anywhere from 7ish to 11 at night. I’m out at night then when I get home is when I usually do my work like sending emails or learning any songs and writing.” Ben Pu is a musician trapped between eras. By making a living as a full time musician he has to pay the bills by taking some very thankless and very long gigs. In the process he has mastered the three-hour set and watching him move

a room is a testament to his talent. But while he has built a solid base for his solo music and his band, his hard work has not extrapolated out online. This is all partly due to the fact that he has managed to get by without an online presence and over-saturation. With Try Again Tomorrow, we find a Ben Pu & Crew moving into the present and coming into their own with a renewed focus on quality. The front man Ben Pu, is finally stepping out with a notable release and cementing the band onto solid ground.
