Boundless, the debut record by the jazz septet of the same names sounds like many other modern jazz projects to come out in the past few years. But that isn’t a bad thing. Rather, it’s an accomplishment for three young composers Zach Rich, Matteo Sabattini and Joey LeClerc (as well as Danial Thompson, who penned “Down”) all of whom are either recent alumni or current students from the University of Northern Colorado’s jazz program. The album opens with a haunting piano riff on Rich’s composition “Sleepless Nights,” courtesy of pianist Sopon Suwannakit, complemented by tenderly played horn melodies. The track follows an abnormal song form filled with unique interludes between solo sections, groove changes, and melodies that don’t repeat. The introductory piano riff does come back, but where you would expect the original horn melody to follow suit, Sarute Wijitwechakarn’s drum solo hits instead. The septet’s solos offer what feels like contributions to a conversation, as opposed to overbearing shredding. Saxophonist / composer Joey LeClerc lets his solo in “Sunder” breathe; even when he builds momentum, the lines feel more earnestly emotional than spotlight-stealers.

Guitarist Adam Wissman, a feature guitarist in several funk and rock acts in the Northern Colorado scene, retains yet adapts his voice on this album. In “Sleepless Nights,” he has a rock edge to his tone, while his licks and melodies belong to cool jazz. Boundless’s self-titled places a heavy emphasis on the orchestration and arrangement of each track. “Footprints” features polyphonic horn lines that weave in and out of the foreground and background. Paired with the five rhythm section players, the tight orchestration becomes a necessity for the pieces to retain clarity. Many professional jazz albums contain elements like these, some just as good or better. But this album depicts three composers who aren’t bound to the obligations of school to produce quality jazz. Have you ever been so fed up with your 9-to-5 that you decided to quit your job and pursue your true calling? Further Notice, the new album by rapper Mitchell James, paints the picture of somebody who chooses to act on that urge and all the dreams and nightmares that come along with it. Recorded and mixed by DJ Yetty of Soul Sessions Studios in Greeley, Mitchell James teams up with producers from Colorado (such as _chefsoul on “I Feel Alive”), and the West Coast (Kasino Kam on “Breaking Points), to deliver his hip-hop take on the take-thisjob-and-shove-it anthem. The Fresno transplant, Navy veteran, and CSU student has said in previous interviews that the late Mac Miller is one of his biggest influences, and the flavor definitely comes through in his bouncing, semi-melodic delivery. The instrumentals are well matched with the sentiments the lyrics convey, whether it’s the this-isn’thow-it-was-supposed-to-be lament on “I Feel Alive,” or the get-the-bag gusto on “Mind on the Guap” featuring EA’s Duke

Shoota and Trav The Trigger. If you’re a fan of rappers who use the same cadence for the entire album, I hate to disappoint, but Mitchell James does a great job of switching the flow up from song to song, riding each beat with finesse. At 8 tracks and less than 30 minutes, the album feels a little short. But that doesn’t mean that this isn’t a solid full-length debut, only that it definitely leaves me wanting more. Give it a listen, and indulge your inner Peter Gibbons the next time you’re heading into your Office Space. People in General, a selfdescribed jazz-pop band out of Fort Collins, draw their influence from a few genres. Obviously, jazz and pop are among them, but the three piece band also cite math-rock as a stylistic influence, using unusual time signatures with odd and everchanging meters, giving the music an esoteric sound.

This almost sounds contrary to jazz music as we know it in the cliché sense, but it’s actually a perfect compliment, and People in General makes it work with Piglet. The album (out November 16) is whimsical, light and fun, but laden with a more complex sound behind the cutesy lyrics guitarist Abe Dashnaw sings. The Great Salmon Famine more than convincingly deliver every original song and amusing cover with stellar musicianship on every instrument. In attempting to sum up the band’s ideas and goals for KELP!, there may be no better way to put it than the chant in “Hanks Groove” where the showman announces: “We’re here to get down with y’all” before the band

drops into a deep groove sure to have you moving in seconds. The Fort Collins quintet have no other goal than to make you have a great time and every moment on KELP! maintains that mantra - both in your headphones and live in concert, where the quintet shine the most. KELP! keeps things moving along through its second and third songs “Adelaide Ms. Mermaid” and “Where’s the Waltz” with a more mellow vibe, eclectically mixing a lush

underwater feeling with an oldtimey jig and a sleepy slow jam featuring some stellar tenor saxophone from Adam Bell. The remainder of the record shows more of the fantastic diversity in musical tastes and abilities among the members in the band. Everything from the breakneck speed-funk in “The Good Cheese” (shout out to Evan Waring on guitar for an awesome solo) to a fun, extended reimagining of The Champs’ “Tequila” - a rhythmically playful highlight of the collection. match diverse songwriting with stellar production (via Evergroove Studios) and their focus on pure fun. The result is a record no lover of good times can afford to miss. BREAKING THE CYCLE: UPLIFT FOCO PLUCKS FOR A GOOD CAUSE Andy Whilden knew exactly who to turn to when he was putting together a house band for his first music festival: He called a bunch of bluegrass players. Whilden is a sound engineer (the founder of Treeline Sound) and bluegrass is his speciality, so he knows the players. But he didn’t just call them out of convenience. He wanted a unique concert with a killer backing band and four singer/songwriters doing their own set. Bluegrass pickers fit that bill. The result will be Uplift: FoCo, a fundraiser for the The Matthews House, an organization based in Old Town Fort Collins that works to break the cycle of poverty by empowering families and young people through resources that may not otherwise be available to them. Whilden began volunteering for Matthews because he enjoys working with children. Whilden once put together a similar benefit for a friend doing good work in Kenya, but that was mostly a jam with chili, beer and mutual friends who raised $1,000. This is his first big festival, and it started with finding a lineup worthy of a show at the Aggie Theater. “I just asked Eric, ‘Who do you want to play with?’” Whilden said. “Which players excite you and who wouldn’t

you normally get to play with?” Eric is Eric Thorin in this case, a local bass player, producer and faculty member for the University of Northern Colorado’s new Folk & Bluegrass Program. Thorin agreed to act as Whilden’s music director, although Whilden calls him his “musical anchor.” He toured with Thorin for a sound engineering job back in 2015. “He’s a musician’s musician,” Whilden said. Thorin, for his part, did pick a dream team of players who are each masters of their instrument, including Dusty Rider, a pilot who moonlights as a pedal steel and banjoist; fellow UNC faculty member Jordan Ramsey, the 2016 national champion on mandolin, Eric Wiggs, a guitarist with deep jazz roots but also the 2016 Rockygrass flatpicking champion; and Joe Lessard, a violinist and songwriter with Head for the Hills and Whiskey Blanket. Thorin, for his part, has hundreds of compositions and orchestrated songs to his credit and will help arrange and write for the concert. Bluegrass musicians are used to gathering together and hammering out good music, even great music, and that’s what Whilden needed for the show. “They’re all used to putting something super obscure together,” he said. “It’s a great genre for collaboration and improvising.”

But he doesn’t want to call the show a bluegrass concert, and neither does Thorin. “We are all pretty versatile,” Thorin said. “I have a pretty strict definition of what bluegrass is because I’ve played so much traditional music. This isn’t what I’d call bluegrass. I’m just really looking forward to playing with all these great musicians. The lineup looks fantastic.” That lineup includes an opening set from Lady Moon, a new project from Eva Holbrook of the popular sister group SHEL and solo artists Alysia Kraft, Courtney Hartman and Bethel Steele. Thorin will arrange unique renditions of each artist’s songs for the band. “I was really going for who has a good name locally,” Whilden said, “but also who fits as an acoustic songwriter. I was just lucky my first four choices were all stoked about it.” Hartman is the most bluegrassbased songwriter, but even her songs aren’t strictly bluegrass, Whilden said, even if she’s a great guitarist. Holbrook’s project intrigues Whilden, given that it promises to explore folk music around the world, and Kraft plays as much rock as she does acoustic. “There’s some similarity,” Whilden said, “but all four have their own thing.”

There will be a more traditional bluegrass jam at the end, possibly with more than a dozen on stage at once. They’re calling that portion The

Clusterpluck. It could be the most traditional and predictable thing on stage that night despite all the improvisation. Whilden hopes the show does well raising awareness and resources for The Matthews House, the goal being to bring it back next year. “It will be a unique show full of surprises,” Whilden said. He’s excited to offer to the Aggie’s audience that night the same thing The Matthews House offers those who need it: lifeaffirming positivity through a vibrant community.

“We wanted to keep working on it until it was truly reinvented for this album.” She definitely needed to go to the shop in the morning, he said. So instead of being en route to The Auricle in Canton, Ohio, they were van shopping. A cancelled show and a few thousand dollars later, Denver’s Wildermiss were back on the road playing their 4th career tour last month, which brought them all the late-night drives, truck stops and 99-cent pizza slices at 3am you’d expect from life on the road as an ambitious young band. In many ways, Wildermiss made it big a couple years ago with their first album Lost With You. It had a breakout hit and they got regular rotation on 93.3 KTCL, performances at Red Rocks and a slot on Last Call With Carson Daly. But they’re not exactly flying in private jets when outside the comfort of Colorado. In fact, they’re still driving vans that suck.

This, their sophomore release, stays true to the indie pop-rock ways they established on their debut Lost With You, which featured the aforementioned breakout hit “Carry Your Heart.” The guitar riffs that open up In My Mind’s lead-off track “Star-Faced,” courtesy of Seth Beamer and Josh Hester, are bright and melodic, a keystone sound of theirs, supporting singer / bass keyboardist Emma Cole. Cole balances her vocal texture between breathy and floaty to an aggressive poppunk attitude which matches the band’s energy. Though true to their ways, no two tracks sound the same. “Fake” breaks up the general upbeat feel of the album with a spacy power-ballad. “Paralyzed” has an acoustic aesthetic within the track, pulling them away from their heavy, electric rock. and synergy within the quartet perhaps best displayed on the single “Hell or High Water.” Long time fans will find a real treat on the last track of the album, where the band placed the song “Girl,” a tune they played at their very first show. The song went through many incarnations and versions of itself, including titles changes. It never felt complete, and it almost didn’t make the cut on the new album. “We wanted to keep working on it until it was truly reinvented for this album,” said Cole in an interview for BandWagon. The song opens with an echo of the lyrics “it’s only in my mind.” When Wildermiss wrote the song (before their first show, it turns out) it was titled “In My Mind.” On their setlists, they always short-handed the title as “Girl,” until that became the official title. This detail is

just one example of dozens the band has diligently labored over, chiseled away at or simply stumbled upon while working to finalize the vision of the release. A year-long project like creating an album is a lot of work and can feel like old news once it is finally put out, but just how In My Mind is new to longtime listeners, Wildermiss can still be new to other audiences. On their first tour in early 2018 supporting The Oh Hellos, they wanted to find the best way to speak to and attract the fans of the headliners while outside Colorado. Now, as they pass through cities like Chicago and New York City as the headliners, they continue to meet more and more people who know them. “It’s fun seeing the fans who remember us as we grow a following,” said Cole. As their tour continues west

Cole moved to Colorado from Tucson, Arizona when she was pretty young, while Hester left Houston, Texas in his early 20’s. They hope their respective connections to their hometown roots will draw in new fans from old acquaintances. “We’ll see if any elementary school friends remember me and come out,” Cole remarked. The Wildermiss fanbase steadily grows as they play new venues across the country, but sold-out shows in the Denver and the Northern Colorado area

still always feel like an amazing homecoming. No matter where they’re from or how far they continue to go, Colorado still carries their heart and Denver – if only in their minds while on tour – remains their true home. Wildermiss celebrate the release of In My Mind with a continued tour of the southwest in the new year, as well as a co-headlining appearance with Slow Caves at Washington’s in Fort Collins on January 18. Murs was well aware the open mic part of hiphop culture was dying, or at least inching toward its last breath. So when his friend Davis Powers, former producer for Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Carson Daly Show (and Fort Collins High alumnus) mentioned he was working with The Bohemian Foundation in Fort Collins, they started brainstorming about how to better connect with the hip-hop community. Murs suggested doing an open mic at The Music District and the rest is history. Named Groundwaves, the mic kicked off in June 2019 and ran for six consecutive months. For each installment, dozens of hopeful MCs would throw their name in the ring and take the stage in an effort to showcase their rapping prowess — or lack thereof, in some cases.

“The Bohemian Foundation and The Music District loved the idea and they funded it,” Murs explains. “They said, ‘Let’s try for six months and see how it goes is.’ And I believe that it’s one of, if not the, most successful programs they’ve had. Everyone was pleasantly surprised. The first night, there were 200 plus people and we were at capacity.” For the November 19 finale, the event moved to The Armory. Only this time, participants weren’t allowed to pick their own beats. Instead, local turntablist/ producer Fullmetal provided instrumentals ranging from J. Dilla to Dipset. As always, Murs presented a nurturing environment, encouraging each participant to do their thing — no matter what their skillset. That continued off stage, too. artists would ask “anything from how to tour or literally how to rap or how to hold the mic,” Murs stated.

The audience wasn’t afraid to tell each participant what they thought at each Groundwaves event either. Often times, they’d provide unsolicited feedback or blurt out the unfavorable chant, “Thank you, come again.” Sometimes that was all it took to ignite a fire within. “I think you can get your feedback right there. Even if you don’t come to the mentoring sessions, that one little word of feedback is the feedback that you needed to do more work,” Murs explains. “And then I think a lot — and I might be wrong — but I think it’s imitation, creation and then innovation. Those are some steps that I’ve heard other artists mention. “So I think they need to go back, watch, maybe come back to Groundwaves and try to do something acceptable, but also watch the people who are doing well and learn from other examples. That’s how I learned. I feel like rap is something that can be taught now. It’s being taught at a university level. It can be taught like violin or piano.” For those who are disappointed Murs’ official Groundwaves run is over, there’s already confirmation from The Music District on bringing it back in 2020. Until then, Hodi’s Half Note will host something similar. “If it’s not with me, it won’t be called Groundwaves, but maybe something new. Phonosapien does an open

mic at Hodi’s,” Murs said, referring to Co-Op, the monthly hip-hop event hosted by Bad Neighbors (of which Phonosapien is a member) which features headlining acts, creative writing exercises and an open mic. Overall, Murs is grateful for the opportunity and believes he grew as a human being during his time in Fort Collins. “What I thought was useless information about hip-hop turned out to be of good use,” he says. “To mentor especially, makes me realize how many answers I do have after 25 plus years in the business.” The community is grateful too, and the hope is that the hip-hop scene itself

will have grown, with the standard of a “safe space but not a fake space” as Murs put it - a supportive community that gives honest, constructive feedback being the new norm. Building the FoCo hip-hop scene up, rather than dissing each other to the ground has been the point since the first Groundwaves hit. The hip-hop open mic torch will be carried by Bad Neighbors at the monthly event Co-Op, which takes place at Hodi’s HalfNote starting December 21. Murs is expected to return to FoCo for Groundwaves 2 in 2020.
