Inner Oceans I Don’t Mind

Noel Billups

BandWagon Magazine

I Don’t Mind is the first proper full-length album from synth pop Inner Oceans. Upon first listen you’ll most likely think, “Wait, this band is from Denver???” Originally yes, but they just recently made the big move to Los Angeles. Coming in at five members, the band packs a huge punch with their own brand of stadium-ready, psychedelic synth pop. Amid the state’s craft beer-centric, bluegrass, rock, funk, and EDM saturated music scene, there is a lot of great pop music and artists that often get overlooked. The band delivers a sound that is almost too big for Colorado to contain. From start to finish, the nine song album continuously provides catchy vocal

melodies, tasty synths, and groovy rhythms without getting stale. The opening track “Ready Your Ghost,” is a dramatic and moody track that starts sparsely with reverb drenched acoustic guitar and lone, filtered vocals reminiscent of the song “Deep Sea Diver” by Grizzly Bear. Shortly after, the song blossoms into a huge instrumental, synth-driven chorus fronted by a pleasingly jarring, metallic synth lead. Halfway through the album, the band dials it back with “Call Through the Wire,” a real standout track on the album. They effortlessly combine the sounds and melodies of 80’s pop ballads with a touch of R&B into a more minimal instrumentation that leaves them beautifully exposed. “Back to U,” the third to last track on the album, is a bouncy, arpeggiator driven song in 6/8 that just seems to float on with no rush to be anywhere. I Don’t Mind is a near flawless album and a stunning debut. Everything is fantastic from the songwriting, arrangements, and production. Keep an eye on this band, their future is looking very bright.

Scarlet Canary Perspective

Samm Barrett

BandWagon Magazine

Scarlett Canary’s new EP Perspective fits the band name very well, showing what this wild songbird can do. The album is a mishmash of heavy rock and roll riffs combined with elegant vocals. The tracks have an interesting dynamic of party-starting vibes and determined vocals. The album follows a loose concept around perspective, starting with the track “I’ll Be Okay,” which is a very energetic way to begin the record. Touching on the emotion of a broken heart, what led to it, and the outlook afterward, it fits the theme well. This song is a great example of the many catchy hooks that litter the album. As we make our way about halfway through the tracklist, “Spectral” hits. By far the best track on the album and what appears to be the climax as well. With a huge bold chorus it definitely highlights the chemistry of the band

BANDWAGON MAGAZINE | 6

and gives the listener several moments to belt along with lead singer, Hannah Maddox. With harmonized verse and bridge sections reminiscent of “The Agonist” (Alissa WhiteGuz era), the track shows very good composition and an eerie and haunting subtlety. Erupting from the middle of the song is one of the heaviest moments of the album in which the band gives an onslaught of weighted guitars and slamming drums, all while Hannah screeches at the audience reminding us that Scarlet Canary can be both pleasant and fierce. Wrapping up the EP is “Don’t Be Afraid.” With group vocals and a very uplifting feel, it summarizes the overall outlook of “Perspective” and ends the album on a high note. Some sections throughout the album can be lackluster at times, and it can feel as though they are intentionally trying to fit a radio rock demographic instead of adding to the song. Overall, Scarlet Canary shows a good contrast of pop and metal elements with a touch of rock and roll to tie it together. The EP is definitely worth a listen with several highlight tracks, heavy sections, and hooks that won’t leave your head. W

hen illustrious ‘80s actor Corey Feldman emerged with his recent musical project, Corey & the Angels, many people were left scratching their heads. They couldn’t seem to understand how the longtime thespian’s passion for music could transcend any insecurity he was apparently supposed to feel. After his now infamous Today Show performance video went viral and drew harsh criticism, he retreated from the public eye for awhile, which if you know Feldman, is completely understandable. The Los Angeles native, by all accounts, is one of the most congenial “celebrities” out there.

And he cares — he truly cares about the music. His father was a member of the ‘60s psychedelic rock band Strawberry Alarm Clock, his sister was in The Mickey Mouse Club and would perform Beatles songs at Disneyland, and his grandmother had an old grand piano that entranced him as a child. Music was a constant in his life. “Sean Cassidy was like my idol,” Feldman says from his home in L.A. “That’s when I was 7 years old. My grandmother had this antique piano. Ironically, on the back of Sean’s album, was a photo of him at 3 or 4 years old standing by this piano. I remember thinking, ‘I would like that to be me one day.’ I remember thinking I would like to be taken as a serious musician and look back on some baby photo of me standing next to my grandmother’s piano.” Thrust into the limelight at an age when most people are still playing with toy bulldozers in their sandboxes, Feldman landed a series of major film roles in movies like The Goonies, Stand By Me and Gremlins. Before he knew it, he was experimenting with hard drugs and alcohol, but had the frame of mind to quit before he even hit the “magical” age of 21. “I went through the drug scene at a very early age,” he explains. “It only lasted for two years. I was out of that really quickly. I saw enough. I was actually completely sober and off of all drugs by 18. Three years before I could go into a bar and order a drink legally, I was already not drinking. When I got to my 21st birthday and everybody wanted to party, I was like, ‘Naaaaah.’

I took my first drink and first hit of weed at 13. By 15, I took my first hard drug and around 17-and-ahalf, I was done.” Today, spirituality is at the forefront of everything he does. The 45-year-old essentially sees no point in living if he doesn’t have faith in something greater than himself. He started, what he dubs, “The Angel Program” with that foundation in mind.

“There’s no point in existence if we don’t have a spiritual base to start from, Anybody who doesn’t see that is kind of in denial.” “There’s no point in existence if we don’t have a spiritual base to start from,” he says. “Anybody who doesn’t see that is kind of in denial. Maybe you’ve just never seen the light and have just been shrouded in darkness your whole life, so you don’t know the possibility of what it even can be on the other side. At the end of the day, if you believe in God, pray to God and have a spiritual guideline for that everything you do…number one, you’ll always be honest and two, you’ll always have a moral fiber. Beyond that, you’ll also be able to help others find that light. That’s what we do through our music and our performances. That’s what The Angel program is all about —spreading love and light.”

As Corey and the Angels continue to crisscross the country, he will likely run into more skeptics along the way who want to condemn him for having the “angels” scantily clad in lingerie while claiming he’s “helping” and empowering beautiful women. While they may have a point, Feldman’s love and genuine belief that he’s doing something good will always prevail. “The angel theme was around long before the band,” he says. “I created the company Corey’s Angels about five years ago with the intention of helping beautiful females who are often misunderstood. There’s a lot of immediate judgment against them just because they’re beautiful. People assume they can’t possibly have real talent, intelligence, or be worth anything other than their looks or bodies. We decided to create this company with a ‘winkwink, nudge-nudge’ to folks at home that we are going to try to tempt you all with this salacious idea of these girls in lingerie wearing angel wings. But really, I just wanted to help these young ladies to realize their dreams by becoming these artists they’ve always dreamed of becoming.”

BEHIND THE MASKS Kyle Eustice | BandWagon Magazine

Still riding high from his performance in Baltimore the night before, Twiztid MC Monoxide Child (real name Paul Methric) is admittedly anxious about the second show. The Detroit native was pleasantly surprised by how well the first show of The Psychomania Tour went despite the group adding several new tracks to the set list. “Last night was the best first night of my career,” Methric says. “Our first nights are usually a little rusty at times, especially when we’re working new songs. You can rehearse them as many times as you want, but when you’re in front of 700 people, it’s different. Your breathing is different and the way you annunciate things are different, so we were kind of nerve wracked by that because we added six new songs to the set, but we nailed it. I was very proud of us. Now I’m dreading the second show [laughs].” From the outside look-

ing in, it’s almost a ri- juggalo group. But after diculous notion. After all, their split from the label in Twiztid has one of the most 2012, it’s a link they’ve been insanely loyal fan bases in trying to break. “We’re different,” he the world (read: juggalos). When Twiztid drops an says. “We’re in the fruit basalbum, video, single, or ket, but there’s pineapples, shows up to rock a stage, a there’s oranges, there’s apsea of “horrorcore” enthu- ples — and then there’s us.” Considering both groups siasts come out in droves to show their unwavering wear clown makeup and support. It’s carried the flex their theatrical persoduo — Monoxide and Jamie nas with nearly everything they do, it’s Madrox “ But we wanna show going to — from struggling that we’re a lot more be difficult than what the rap for them to artists to world really thinks completely an interdisassociate. nationwe are. A lot of the ally rec- world sees the makeup Methric and Madrox are ognized and they’re like, ‘Oh entity. they’re just like ICP.“ ’” s e e m i n g l y well aware “There’s no other fan of the uphill battle they base like it,” he says. “But face. “I just believe that the we wanna show that we’re a lot more than what the wrong people are being rap world really thinks we pushed to portray our genare. A lot of the world sees re,” he says. “That’s what the makeup and they’re like, I honestly, wholeheartedly believe. If we could be ‘Oh they’re just like ICP.’” Since signing with the moved to the forefront of Insane Clown Posse’s label, that a little bit more, I think Psychopathic Records, in we could get more people the late ‘90s, Twitzid has on board with what we’re been inextricably tied to trying to do. We’re trying their fellow Detroit-based to reface this thing.”

In 2014, Twiztid announced its own independent imprint, Majik Ninja Entertainment, which now boasts a healthy roster, including Blaze Ya Dead Homie, The R.O.C., Lex “The Hex” Master, G-Mo Skee, Boondox, Young Wicked, and of course, Twiztid. The duo released its 11th studio album,The Continuous Evilution Of Life’s ?’s, dropped in January 2017. Although the cover art continues the clown theme, Methric believes the costumes deter people from truly understanding who they are and what they want to accomplish. “I wouldn’t say it bothers me, but maybe it disappoints me because we know what we bring to the table, and we know it’s worthy,” he says. “People don’t even hear it because of the way it looks or hear anything we have to say because of the makeup. You can either accept what were doing and get on board, or just keep doing you ‘cuz we’re going to keep doing us.”

SOUTHERN AVENUE BAND

O

ri Naftaly and his group Southern Avenue Band have found the perfect home for themselves at Stax Records. Last year we caught up with Ori about the blues and being on such a legendary label. “Well, we are honored that’s for sure. We don’t consider ourselves as blues artists because we write music that I personally won’t label as blues. I can wear many hats, and in Southern Avenue I’m definitely the blues guy. The reason I founded SAB with Tierinii, Tikyra, and Daniel is because I wanted to create music regardless of style and genre. We call it Memphis Music. Don’t get me

wrong our show is very bluesy. It’s all soulful, and we make sure you dance. Blues artists are a whole different thing that we cannot claim…” When it came to the forming of Southern Avenue, Naftaly describes his bandmates as basically soul mates. “It’s like it was meant to be,” says Naftaly. “I hired Tierinii and TK to join my solo band, and after a few months of touring, we all realized we should start fresh and write new songs and regroup. Southern Avenue is a safe place for all four of us to be who we really are as musicians and people.”

SAMANTHA FISH Samantha Fish is an example of the new generation finding blues the old-fashioned way. Growing up in a musical family, she was exposed to rock and blues classics early on, and as a teenager, she would sneak into some of the blues clubs in her native Kansas City. Eventually, she found herself sitting in with some of the bands when she came of age. Not too long after, she recorded her first live album titled Live Bait, which gained her the attention of Ruf Records who then featured her on the album Girls With Guitars alongside Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde. Since then, Fish has won numerous awards and released four albums, earning herself a place at the table with so many of the greats in the modern blues world.

WALTER TROUT Walter Trout originally came into the music scene in the late 1960’s from the Jersey coast. Over the course of his career, Trout has been awarded many honors. He is a three-time winner of the Overseas Artist of the Year award at the British Blues Awards and a three-time Blues Music Awards nominee. Throughout his life, Trout has faced and overcome many obstacles. Most recently, he suffered from cirrhosis of the liver, which unfortunately calls for a transplant. Luckily with the help of his fans, Trout’s wife was able to raise the money in time for the much-needed operation. In June of 2013, Trout underwent the procedure. Now fully recovered, he is back with a vengeance.

MY BLUE SKY With origins from Colorado, it only makes sense that My Blue Sky will be bringing the bitter sweetness of The Allman Brothers to Northern Colorado. And while mirroring the epic guitar licks of Dicky Betts and Duane Allman may seem close to impossible, guitarists John Gallagher, Tim Kestle, and Bob Kalkman manage to bring Dicky and Duane’s improvisational skills back to life. My Blue Sky includes seven qualified Colorado-based musicians who balance the sounds of southern rock, blues, and jazz into a mellow sound that has influenced fans and musicians for years. They were able to take first place two years in a row (2014 and 2015) at the Denver Tribute Band Competition.
