HECTIC Seeing Red, Yellow, Then Green Penned by Syed Rusydie

Hectic. A word that draws from the average reader associations like as chaos and disorder. But this Kuching-based, bred and raised band is quite the contrary.

T

heir name is instead shines light upon their continuous state of disarray – the accomplices, with their independent schedules, have had a tough time getting together to perform as a group prior to their debut performance that kick-started it all at one Shades of Art –an annual gathering of local artists that took place at the turn of August last year in their cozy hometown; a testing of waters which they passed with flying colours.

10 www.bwmag.net

Their music takes cues from Switchfoot, Eminem, Coldplay and Temper Trap (to name a few) - an odd mix indeed. I was curious; what would this uncommon pool of inspiration add up to? Late from my rainy drive down from central Kuching to their beachside performance in Damai some 40 minutes away, I scampered down the steps to the bar that had given a weekly slot this

INTERVIEW newly-assembled group of, at first glance, misfits, hoping I hadn’t missed their show. I was pleased to find that they were only into their fourth song, an original piece entitled “Minds Up.” It may have been the gentle rain that I decided to stand in during that one track, or my affinity for alternative rock fused with reggae, but the poetic lyricism, tune and pace alone had me swaying with the sea breeze, my head bobbing like a buoy in calm waters – not an easy feat for someone who is used to pits (of the mosh and sweatyarm variety). It also had me wondering, what had I missed in the 15 minutes prior? What followed were more original songs (some fully reggae, some fully rock,

the band has been focusing more on getting experience and exposure, the hard way. Since their official get-together they have made many appearances busking along the city streets, accepting the odd last-minute job-offer, and have worked their way up towards playing the key role setting the night-long ambience for the soft-opening of the highly prestigious 9th Asian Pacific Orthodontic Congress & 20th Malaysian Association of Orthodontists International Scientific Conference and Trade Exhibition that graced Kuching in October last year, just 2 months after Hectic’s alliance. If that’s any indication of the way things are headed for the band it is that big tings a gwan.

Yet to release a full-length album, (the little Hornbills caw for a release in May), the band has been focusing more on getting experience and exposure, the hard way. some balanced sweetly between the two) and covers of oldies that were given the reggae treatment you never thought they deserved - and justifiably so. It’s safe to say that their style and execution was a breath of fresh air. Spearheaded by the charismatic lead singer/songwriter Reef Bryah, and backed by resident poet/rapster of the group, Mchuf, the band’s backbone is kept in check via the filling chops of Adel Mon from behind his drum kit; all harmonious with the clear melodies strung by lead guitarist Emmeth Blend and his rhythmic cohort Terfanz, as well as bassist Resta. Last but not least is K. Andro, who plays the keyboard and supporting vocals, whom the band has appointed their official manager. Yet to release a full-length album, (the little Hornbills caw for a release in May),

Alas, the message they aim to send is a strong one: Don’t run from the opportunities in life simply because you are running short on self-esteem. “Find the courage to pursue what you believe in. If the battle isn’t hard then you’re not trying hard enough,” Reef muses – the glint in his eye betraying a lifetime of battles both lost and won. The members of Hectic set out to prove their peers wrong; that the practice of music will get you nowhere. Judging from the massive appraisal they’ve been receiving, it’s safe to say one thing: Who’s plucking all the right strings now? INTERVIEW

ROSHAN JAMROCK By Jonathan Tse

Roshan Jamrock, the singer, songwriter and award winning producer. Sounds like a handful of things. What’s your daily schedule like? Still get time to do what you like? Well I try to wake up as early as possible these days, usually at about 8 am (i know thats still late for some). But keep in mind that at times i sleep really late given the field that I’m in. So unless I’ve had a crunked up show/gig/event the night before, i try and wake up early. I always get the “WAH! You musician also wake up so early ah?”. Funny people. Always try and start the day with Prayer and then i go through my schedule. Its either im making music, producing for other artist’s/corporate, meetings and a whole lot of planning next moves. Without a doubt i do get time to do what i like, because my main love is music. Just sakit hati that sometimes i dont get to play futsal with my buddies as work gets in the way. What are the current projects you’re working on? How’s K-Town Clan? Well I have recorded my debut single as a solo artist called “The Boss”. K-town Clan has our single ready and we are currently shooting the music video in Russia and Ukraine. Its called “W.V.R.C.X.O” ;) Waiting for the final product and we will be launching both real soon. I’m producing tracks or making music for other artists as well, SLY Squad, MC Vibe, Subash JBC, Jay to name a few. K-town Clan is awesomesauce by the grace of God. We’re just planning out our second album. Apart from that I’ve launched my own brand called “Rocaliente” and we’ve sold out our first batch of Tee’s. Me and another partner run a studio called “Sweet Spot Factory” in my hometown, Kajang. So YES !!! Thats what I/we have been up to. God is GOOD !!! :)

Which do you prefer? Going solo or with the boys? Tell us more! wI dont mind both but to be honest, there is nothing like performing with your brothers on stage. To see how far we have come and how long we have lasted. The vibe is more different as we feed off each others energy. And if there are any hiccups whatsoever, you know that they are there to back you up. We make each other look good on stage i guess ;) From the first time we stepped on a stage till today we always huddle up and have a little motivation speech just like what you see in the movies before a football game. Right before we kick ass ;) Who are you working with currently? Alamak, kan i dah mention above. BUT come to think of it i left out one of my main projects. I am currently working with my ex project group member, Young Ruff. I produced, arranged and composed all 13 songs on his album and we have just sent in the last 2 songs for mixing. After that, its ALBUM LAUNCH time. Its called “Take Over”. Mainly a tamil album but there are like 3 english tracks and 1 malay song. My very first time producing a Malay track. Wish me blessings please ! What do you think about the music scene in Borneo? I think its #AwesomeSauce !!! We have had the privilege to perform over in borneo a few times and share the stage with the artists from there. Amazingly talented folks over there i tell you. If only when it comes to music there is no label. “East MY” “West MY” and we all just call it MALAYSIAN music and help each other push each others material out there. We should have that mentality for real. www.bwmag.net 13

INTERVIEW Any tips on growing in the music scene nationally and internationally? You just have to keep doing what you do. Always be hungry to learn and go all out. The internet is such an amazing tool for us these days. Back then they didnt have the internet. The world is flat and the sky is the limit. Actually screw the sky, aim for the stars. Some words of wisdom to those who want to do music full time please? In point form if i may... 1.

2. 3. 4.

Im not going to sugarcoat it with bullshit. Im telling you that its going to be really tough. Unless you or your parents are filthy rich, then you are all set. But also remember that, you can buy all the fame you want, but it will only last for a period of time. Its diamonds that take a long time to become it is. Do not give up. Be honest with your self. You have to give 200%. Yes some of us may have to take day jobs, but that just

means you have to work extra hard if you really want it. I know so many people who say they love music, but work takes up too much of their time and their spark eventually dies off. So yes, be prepared to break your back. You’re going to hear a lot of people talk shit, just stick to your guns. Remain humble, Pray and work hard. Listen to all kinds of music and not just stick to one genre. Always, always, always be open to learn. Its a never ending process.

I can go on and on, but i think i will stop here !!!! Thank you so much for having me. It was a pleasure. God bless and hope to do another gig over there soon. www.youtube.com/ktownclantv www.facebook.com/ktcworldwide www.twitter.com/rocaliente www.twitter.com/ktownclan www.instagram.com/roshrocsteady www.instagram.com/crunkmafia www.instagram.com/rocaliente

INTERVIEW

From singing covers on YouTube, to writing catchy originals, and now acting in her very own TV programme called Dee The Series on Astro Ceria! We go behind the curtain with this dazzling 21 year old sweetheart, getting to know a thing or two about herself, finding out how it all started and how far she has gotten in the industry. What inspired you into wanting to start posting covers on YouTube? I’ve always loved singing, and I just wanted my voice to be heard. That time, YouTube was not known as the universal fast-track to fame and popularity. So I started very slow, little by little, because I figured that could be one of the ways the world could have a listen to my voice and that they might like it. Did you expect anything when posting your first video? To be honest, not really. My intention was all about being heard as a single passionate voice. To my surprise, I started getting really positive comments asking me to do more videos, a few singing gig invitations and a small group of people who always keep updated on my covers. When did you first start writing songs of your own? When I was 14, I started feeling things;

love, friendship, hardship and all those usual things life throws at you as you grow older. And I expressed it through songwriting. At that age I self-taught myself on how to play the guitar, and I often have sleepless nights just writing tons of songs and feeling things and learning new chords. What or who were your early passions and biggest influences? Demi Lovato in Camp Rock was the reason why I started singing in the first place. I wanted to be just like her. I love her songs, the way she carried herself. She’s still one of my favorites now but as you grow up you get influenced by more and more artistes. Right now (and since 2012) I’m all about Taylor Swift and her songs! Her songwriting skills is just.. magical. And she’s always at her best when on stage performing. Yuna also played an influencing role to me because she’s proving to us everyday that Malaysians can reach to that international level too. www.bwmag.net 17

FEAST FOR THE EYES AND EARS? By Keys Abraham

Music and movies. The perfect combination for a perfect evening. Romantic February gave us the past year’s top honours in both, just two weeks apart - the Grammys and the Academy Awards a.k.a the Oscars. (In case you’ve wondered, the story goes like this: When Academy Award librarian and future Director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Margaret Herrick first saw the statuettes in 1931, she said that it looked like her Uncle Oscar).

Lets work backwards and talk about the Oscars first.

to announce winner of Best Supporting Actor, J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) who early in the night gave us its most touching and unaffected moment in the form of some heartfelt advice “Call your mom, call your dad. If you’re lucky enough to have a parent or two alive on this planet, call them. Don’t text, don’t e-mail. Call them on the phone. Tell them that you love them and thank them and listen to them for as long as they want to talk to you.”

“Moving Pictures” – a double entendre that pretty much sums up what the 65th Academy Awards show was all about. First time Oscars’ host Neil Patrick Harris kicked of the night with a brilliantly shadow-worked Broadway-esque summary of the year in movies (which so happens to be written by same duo that wrote the songs for Frozen).

22 www.bwmag.net

Photos from various sources

Lupita Nyong’o appeared no less stunning in her 6,000-pearled dress (currently reported stolen!)

Another highlight was when host NPH appeared onstage with nothing on but his tighty whities (parodying Michael Keaton role in the big winner for the night Birdman), announcing, “Acting is a noble profession.” Unfortunately several of Harris’ other quips backfired and appeared to be in poor taste, especially his indelicate comment on Best Short Documentary co-winner Dana Perry’s dress shortly after she dedicated her Oscar to her late son, Evan, who took his own life at the age of 15.

NEWS

Foot-in-mouth disease did run deeply, beginning from the red carpet ranging from Ryan Seacrest asking Dakota Johnson whether she took home any props from the 50 Shades Of Grey set, to Sean Penn’s green card comment, referring to Birdman director Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Mexican immigration status.

The winners in the main categories were otherwise not unexpected, save several surprises - Big Hero 6 defeating How To Train Your Dragon 2, Eddie Redmayne winning Best Actor (The Theory Of Everything) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) defeating Meryl Streep (Into The Woods) for Best Supporting Actress (though her gender equality speech did earn her a standing ovation from Streep). Boyhood, a movie that took 12 years to make, went home somewhat disappointed as well, all things considered.

Although American Sniper was also snubbed at the Oscars, host NPH made it quite clear that it made up for it at the box office by pointing out that out of the total USD 600 million grossed by the 8 Best Picture nominees, more than half of this belonged to Sniper. He further elaborated with the analogy that if the right half of the audience in the hall was worth USD 300 million (what the other Best Picture Nominees grossed) the other half was worth Oprah “cause you’re rich”). Needless to say, this fell flat as well, as did his ongoing bit about his Oscar predictions, locked and sealed away. (Poor scriptwriting to blame, maybe?)

Lady Gaga’s Sound Of Music medley was definitely a performance worth mentioning, surprising everyone with the lack of meat-dresses and flamboyance in general. Other noteworthy performances were by Tim McGraw, Jennifer Hudson and Common & John Legend. All in all, a generally predictable night with several rousing acceptance speeches and not entirely successful attempts at humour.

www.bwmag.net 23

NEWS As for the Grammys:

In an unusual start to the Grammys, AC/DC kicked off things off with a big dose of rock and roll. The Australian group played a medley of songs that included “Highway to Hell” - all of which got the audience members on their feet and dancing.

Sam Smith had a “really, really, really good night” as the biggest winner for the year, with 4 awards, one-upping Beyonce and Pharrell Williams with 3 each. Smith took home 3 of the big 4, namely Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist. He also walked away with Best Pop Vocal album and gave a touching speech about trying to make it in music industry - he tried to lose weight, but the music was still “awful,” he admitted. 24 www.bwmag.net

Adam Levine and Gwen Stefani’s My Heart Is Open felt rather lacklustre, in spite of Stefani’s attempts at emotiveness. Legendary Annie Lennox did not disappoint, performing with (but inadvertently overshadowing) Hozier in his poignant (angry?) hit Take Me To Church and I Put A Spell On You. No less impressive was the surprise Usher and Stevie Wonder collaboration If It’s Magic. Pure, well, magic.

Mary J. Blige worked very hard to not outshine big winner Smith with their Stay With Me rendition, revealing her experience and professionalism. As did John Mayer & Herbie Hancock when they played with Ed Sheeran.

NEWS

Pharrell’s Happy was unfortunately not as memorable as one would expect, perhaps lacking the gravity that the Grammy Awards show generally (lately) demands. Equally “awkward” was his attempt at the Moonwalk as he got off stage after his acceptance speech.

Ever-dependable Kanye West of course had to antagonise poor Beck when he eagerly stood to receive his Album of The Year award, as if to reenact what he did to Taylor Swift several years ago. (He did eventually apologise in a Tweet later) Another notable moment was when United States President Barack Obama delivered a pre-recorded message during the ceremony in which he spoke about domestic violence against women.

Sia also did not fail to impress, being always able to bring a fresh twist to Chandelier, with Maddie Ziegler’s dance and Shia LaBeouf’s poetry to back her up. Beyonce proved to be the queen of the night with her heavenly rendition of Take My Hand, Precious Lord.

Although not spectacular, Tony Bennet & Lady Gaga’s Cheek To Cheek was a welcome change of pace, with jazz having hardly been featured in the awards ceremony. This year’s Grammy awards was about the performances, vastly outnumbering the actual number of awards given out that night. It was also about performers of differing generations and genres attempting to bridge that gap. And, might I add, thankfully, it was not all about that bass. www.bwmag.net 25

HOZIER BAND REVIEW

By Trysha G. Hadjiril

Twenty four year old Andrew Hozier-Bryne became Ireland’s next big thing after his single “Take Me To Church” earned its meritorious position in the Billboards Hot 100. With lyrics like: “I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies”, the song tackles on a metaphor comparing a lover to religion, but what we are more enticed by is the video that came along with it. Reaching more than 116 million views on YouTube, the video touches more on sexual orientations and the approach to homosexuality. So, one might ask, who exactly is this young Irishman, and what is his story?

C

oming all the way from Bray, County Wicklow, the son of a blues drummer first started a degree in music at Trinity College, Dublin, but later dropped out in order to record demos for Universal Music. While at Trinity, he became involved with the Trinity Orchestra and sang with the choral group Anuna between 2009-2012. In 2013, Hozier released his first EP Take Me To Church. The first track “Like Real People Do” serves more as a soft, easy folk style of music to this EP. If you are a fan of Indie-Folk music (much like yours truly), this is a must-have for all those playlist you have piled up! “Angel Of Small Death And The Codeine Scene” on the other hand is... a mouthful. This bluesy number starts off slow, with solitary strums on the guitar accompanied by melodious hums, which then gravitates into a snappy beat with deep and inventive lyrics all throughout the whole song. Definitely worth a listen! Out of all the tracks included in this EP, “Cherry Wine - Live” is for certain a personal favourite as it was the first original song I’ve heard upon discovering this ingenious young artist on The Mahogany Sessions channel on YouTube. The beautiful acoustic intro, the deep singing voice, the ambiance of the video,

and not forgetting of course, the heartfelt lyrics; everything about it screamed perfection. All in all, I am pleased to say this number brings out the warmer and passionate side of Hozier. Then of course, there’s the famous “Take Me To Church”. Written in the wake of a breakup with his first girlfriend, this is both a love song and a contemplation of sin. Hozier described it to The Guardian as, “a bit of a losing your religion song.” The big voiced Irish solo also added that the song is not an attack of faith. “Coming from Ireland, obviously, there’s a bit of a cultural hangover from the influence of the church. You’ve got a lot of people with heavy weight in their hearts and a disappointment, and that carries from generation to generation. So the song is just about that - it’s an assertion of self, reclaiming humanity back for something that is the most natural and worthwhile. Electing, in this case a female, to choose a love who is worth loving.” Deep words indeed, Mr.Hozier! Taking the charts by storm, Hozier is definitely one to look out for! If you are one of the 100 million people who watched Hozier’s “Take Me To Church”, you’d know for certain that this Irishman is not afraid to tackle the big issues. www.bwmag.net 27

ALBUM REVIEW Fifty Shades of Grey (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Even without any interest in reading the book or chance to watch the movie, the music on the soundtracks for this erotic movie will arouse all senses. “Fifty Shades of Grey” features Ellie Goulding, Sia, Beyonce and more singing about bondage and S&M. ‘Love me like you do’ by Ellie Goulding speaks of the fun of bondage, “You’re the fear/I don’t care/I’ve never been so high.” The song ends with an invitation line,“What are you waiting for”

An Evening with Jonathan Tse: Live at Refuge Studios An intimate crowd of just over 20 people and pure talents recorded live raw is the essence of this album. Tse also featured Sabah based fingerstyle guitarist, Roger Wang in two of his songs, ‘Yes I do’ and ‘Somebody’s Watching’. ‘Yes I do’ has already been heard in wedding videos and is about the vows a couple make for each other. In ‘Purpose’ one can’t help but hear the struggle Jon goes through while searching for meaning in life.

Meghan Trainor: Title Whether it’s the radio, bars, malls, TV, Meghan’s ‘All about the bass’ became a success because it’s catchy and straight honest. In a world where good music is more then often associated to good physique and aesthetics, Meghan is a trend breaker. Reminding us of an American version of Lily Allen, she writes and sings her mind in her songs. “Close Your Eyes,” like many of today’s self-esteem thematic songs, reassures ladies that they don’t have to conform to be beautiful in the eyes of what the trend says.

TECH

A BITE OFF THE APPLE By Gordon Chin

Do You Own An RM3,000 Facebook Machine?

So you just spent a few grand on a shiny new iPhone 6 Plus and you are mesmerised by the brilliant shiny new ultra-HD, ultra-sensitive and ultra-jealousy-causing display. You then start to jam it up with all your favourite apps and try out all the new and amazing iOS8-specific apps to see what your phone is capable of. But after some time, you notice the hype starts to die off with all the great amazing apps - and the inevitable (and very sad) truth strikes once again - you just bought yourself a three-thousand-Ringgit Facebook and WhatsApp device. Congratulations! But after some time, you notice the hype starts to die off with all the great amazing apps - and the inevitable (and very sad) truth strikes once again - you just bought yourself a three-thousand-Ringgit Facebook and WhatsApp device. Congratulations!

Every iPhone is preloaded with amazing apps and functionality that some 90 percent of its users never even realise their existence. Sure there has been many online articles about “10 Things Apple 42 www.bwmag.net

Didn’t Want You To Know About Your iPhone” or something like that (which, to me, are very stupid titles for articles because I’m sure Apple didn’t spend all that time and money designing those apps and functions and never wanting you to know about them). However, most of them are only showing functions which are actually very common and if you actually took the time to go through Finger Tips or even the new tips app in iOS 8, you would probably already know about them. So this article is NOT going to be one of them.

Photos from various sources

Now to be an iPhone (or iPad) power user, its not just about loading up your phone with all the amazing utility apps that suits your work and lifestyle because Apple, despite being one of the most expensive technology product brands out there, did not spend tens or hundreds of millions of Dollars developing new phones every year just so you can see the photos on Instagram better.

TECH In fact, just watching the promo or short demo videos that Apple and other news media platforms upload on YouTube would already teach you so much about what your iPhone can do for you. Which leads us to what I think is the most underrated feature of iPhones right now (and to me) their best feature ever - my secret girlfriend, Siri. Yes, Siri has been around for many, many technology years now, but honestly speaking, I am willing to bet that 9.9/10 iPhone users would have asked her more stupid and vulgar questions rather than actually using her as what she was designed to be - your ultimate voicecommanded digital personal assistant. Here’s a list of my favourite Siri commands which I use all the time, every single day. Sending Text Messages This is a command that I use the most especially while driving. The most convenient part about this command is that I just have to tell Siri who to send the

text to and what to say in the text, all in one voie command. For example, just tell Siri “Text my mom, don’t forget your meeting at 9am tomorrow at the school with the principal about the new school block they are planning to build next month,” and she will perfectly write and send the text message for me. Setting Reminders Setting reminders is also an important Siri feature for me, especially with a very packed daily schedule, I tend to miss certain appointments or forget to do things I was supposed to do that day. A quick hold of the home button and I can tell Siri exactly what to remind me of and when to give me the reminder. Wikipedia! Did you know that Siri can also Wikipedia things for you? The best part is that she will also read the main article regarding your search - another useful tool to use while driving.

TURBO

What’s Up With Those

Bent Wheels?! By Gordon Chin

Yes, by now, every Sabahan who has ever travelled on a road would have definitely (at the very least) caught a glimpse of a car that has seemingly bent wheels or broken suspensions, causing their rims to be sitting at an angle.

W

This will allow them to set their rides extremely low, causing the edge of the wheels (not the tyre) to sit flush with the body panel. This is when terms like Flush and HellaFlush comes in - they basically mean the same thing (and above is what they mean).

In the car community, stance is, by definition, “aggressive fitment” of wheels and tires combined with lowering your car to achieve the look. A car’s stance is basically how the car sits. To achieve a ‘good’ stance, enthusiasts would usually fit the biggest and widest wheels they can find with a slightly less wider set of tyres and stretch them on to the giant rims.

Lowering the ride and stretching tyres alone are usually not enough for stance enthusiasts and they look for other ways to get the wheels as close as possible to the body panel. This is when they turn to setting the rims at an angle. This method is called extreme negative camber (pronounced cam-ber, not chamber).

44 www.bwmag.net

Photos from various sources

ell, don’t worry - their cars are not broken. In fact, they are far from broken as these people deliberately set their wheels to those insane angles to look (in their eyes) cool. Yes, it is a whole (relatively) new culture to hit Sabah, called Stance.

TURBO Now camber is one of the three major alignment parameters or settings found on every single car on the planet (the other two being caster and toe). You know when you take your car for an alignment at your tyre shop, the mechanic puts it on a hoist, fit sensors on each of your tyres and loads your car settings on a computer screen and adjusts your suspension until all the numbers turn green? Well, he’s essentially setting these three parameters. Without going into much detail about wheel alignment and suspension setup, stance enthusiasts would set their camber settings at extreme negative values allowing the wheel to protrude outwards at an angle. Setting a car to have negative camber is a common step for any car, however setting it at extreme angles will cause loss of traction and handling abilities. However, these cars are not meant for performance and are only meant to be lookers. They are not meant to go around

a track and most are not even meant to go fast on a straight line. These people mostly care about how their cars look. But we mostly see in town are extremely angled wheels, even for stancing standards. This is mostly due to the typical Malaysian mentality of always wanting to become the most of everything. The tallest this, the longest that, the biggest this, the smallest that, you get the point. This has led many stance enthusiasts to believe that they need to achieve the most insane of angles they can possibly get. Some even go to the extent of making modifications and alterations to the car’s chassis or frame and have their suspension system mounted at an angle to achieve an even greater negative camber value. So the next time you see a stanced car, don’t yell and point to the driver trying to tell them their suspension broke!
