A revolution in wood products

Kebony is a Norwegian company behind a worldwide sensation. Many years of research and the will to think innovatively have yielded results.

General interest in form and colour is growing, as is our desire to add a personal touch to the structures we build. We don’t want to spend all our time and resources on maintaining our house or cottage. And our awareness of environmental and climate issues is on the increase. Kebony has developed a method which gives architects,designers, construction clients and craftsmen a product that satisfies these needs:

They can replace impregnated timber and precious wood from tropical rain forests. This is why Kebony is the wood for the future!


What is kebonization? Kebonization is a patented process in where the properties of the wood are enhanced. The wood becomes harder and more stable, and its durability is improved. The liquid used in the process contains a bio-based substance which forms a solid core inside the wood. The process involves the following four stages: 1. Ingredients are mixed according to a patented recipe. 2. The liquid is applied under pressure – permanent cell structure transformation. 3. The wood is dried. 4. The wood undergo a curing process at temperatures above 100˚C.

The process is close-looped and the liquid ingredient is recycled during the production process. The ingredient input is produced by using agricultural waste from sugar cane production. Kebony’s patented modification methods are the result of many years of research and development in Norway, Sweden and Canada. They are also based on collaborations with universities and institutes in Germany, the Netherlands, USA and South Africa, including the Norwegian Institute of Wood Technology, the Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute, the SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, SHR Timber Research in the Netherlands, and the University of New Brunswick and Woodtech in Canada.


Many alternatives – many benefits Most of the light-coloured wood types we are familiar with are suitable for kebonization. Currently, the primary wood types we use are pine, beech, Southern Yellow Pine and ash. We draw a distinction between partial kebonization (see page 11) and deep kebonization. For example, ash and beech sapwood are very suitable for deep kebonization, while some kebonized pine products may contain both the treated sapwood and the inherently decay resistant heartwood. Kebonization results in greater hardness, resistance to decay and form stability.

A solution for the future The construction industry is in constant change. Public authorities and clients in the industry get new requirements and expectations. Architects envision new possibilities. Kebony has created solutions that satisfy demand for innovation in terms of quality, aesthetics and environmental friendliness. This new variety of wood tolerates harsh climates and acquires an attractive patina on exposure to the sun and natural elements.

Kebonization gives durability and strength One of the notable benefits of kebonized wood is its resistance to weather and wear; an important property in situations where wood is exposed to the elements. Kebony is particularly suitable for use in outdoor situations such as decking, terrace surfaces and jetties. Other notable benefits are exceptionally good decay resistance and a long life span. This durability is achieved without the drawbacks associated with traditional impregnation methods. That is why we have been granted the Swan eco-label on the Nordic pine used in this process.

Kebony wood

– an exciting new material Kebony is far more stable than other wood types. The only change that will be noticeable over time is the patination that occurs in wood exposed to the elements. Kebony resembles teak and other tropical varieties of wood. It is dark, and acquires a silver-grey patina over time if left untreated. Kebony wood is also much harder than most other wood types.

It all began when a few architects realised the possibilities which Kebony wood had to offer. And many more have arrived at the same conclusion. Architects advise construction clients on long-term conditions that must be taken into consideration. These recommendations are based on stringent aesthetic, qualitative and financial considerations.

Kebony wood offers new design possibilities. The wood is well suited for use on façades, roofs, structural details and terraces. It is also suitable for indoor applications such as flooring. The quality aspects are also important to architects in ensuring

that structures tolerate climates better than with other wood types – with no priming or painting required. Although Kebony wood is more expensive than untreated equivalents, its life cycle costs are competitive with other wood materials.

Quality Spa & Resort Kragerø with 28,000 sq. m. of Kebony wood “Lund Hagem Architects often utilize wood in our projects, and prefer to do so. We believe that wood is a material with many good properties,” says Einar Hagem. “Whenever possible, we opt for solutions that allow the wood to retain its natural appearance – without paint or other types of treatment. Wood also works extremely well in natural environments and in conjunction with other building materials such as concrete, slate, steel and glass. We had previously tried out Kebony wood in some of our smaller projects. We had also kept material samples to observe how the wood reacts to sun, wind and rain over time. So when we won the contract to design Quality Spa & Resort Kragerø, we recommended Kebony Pine as one of the materials to be used.

We placed particular emphasis on the colour tones and patina that will develop over the years to come. We try to avoid painting or staining of façades, both for reasons of maintenance and also to bring out the material’s appearance of roughness. The fact that the impregnation method has a documented ecological profile is very positive.” Lund Hagem Arkitekter AS seeks to form a modern, timeless architectural style which is clearly rooted in Nordic traditions. This has won the firm of architects considerable acclaim for its projects, as well as a number of awards. A lot can be said in favour of copper impregnation, but it isn’t exactly attractive. The alternative is having to spend the few

The latter factor also means that their maintenance budgets can be used for items other than painting and maintaining wood surfaces.

The Norwegian Ministry of the Environment’s action plan for 2007-2010 states: “The Government will be instrumental in ensuring that the public sector sets an example as a conscientious consumer and demands environmentally friendly goods and services that are produced according to high ethical standards.” ”Products and services are chosen on the basis of life cycle costs, quality and environmental properties.” “In the case of goods for which environmental labelling criteria have been developed under the Swan or EU Flower eco-labelling schemes, decisions shall be made on the basis of these criteria as far as possible.”

The media and local communities take note of whether decisions made are environmentally friendly and otherwise sustainable materials and energy solutions are chosen. Businesses are becoming increasingly aware of their reputation, and that they cannot claim to be concerned with the environment if their conduct indicates otherwise. lightform Il pannello lightform può essere fornito bordato in ABS, PVC o laminex con decorativi e finiture combinate alla superficie, grazie alla sinergia con Caspani. Come gli altri pannelli può essere forato, fresato secondo le richieste del Cliente. Il pannello lightform è prodotto a freddo con incollaggio poliuretanico.

Lightform can be supplied with ABS, PVC or laminex edging, plus patterns and finishings in coordination with the surface, thanks to synergies with Caspani. As for other panels, it can be realized drilled and grooved according to customer requirements. Lightform panel is manufactured with cool polyurethane glueing.

STORAGE

Keep the goods in a dry and ventilated place (relative humidity 35%-65%). Do not store with easily inflammable substances. If exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun the panel may deteriorate. Avoid creating unmanageably high and unstable stacks.

MANIPULATION

To avoid warping or damp stains place the panels on pallets with suitable spaces. Use suction pads or gloves when handling the panels. Machinary and equipments must be fitted with appropriate aspiration devices.

STOCCAGGIO

STORAGE

Keep the goods in a dry and ventilated place (relative humidity 35%-65%). Do not store with easily inflammable substances. If exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun the panel may deteriorate. Avoid creating unmanageably high and unstable stacks.

MANIPULATION

To avoid warping or damp stains place the panels on pallets with suitable spaces. Use suction pads or gloves when handling the panels. Machinary and equipments must be fitted with appropriate aspiration devices.

Perfil Lunadeck Profix – Fixação Oculta

DESCRIÇÃO Madeira modificada por acção do calor e sem adição de produtos químicos – 100% ecológica, proveniente de florestas sustentadas da Europa do Norte (certificação PEFC). O processo de tratamento da madeira é realizado em secadores, somente com a injecção de temperatura e humidade. Durante o tratamento a humidade da madeira vai aos 0% (estrutura molecular da madeira é alterada)

sendo estabilizada, na fase final entre os 5% e os 7% de humidade, dependendo da temperatura de tratamento. Os perfis da Lunawood Thermo-D podem ser montados com fixação à vista ou fixação oculta. O perfil do tipo Lunadeck possui uma face ranhurada, antiderrapante.
