Steve McCurry a photographer known for his contemporary and editorial photography was born April 23, 1950 in a small town near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Pennsylvania State University. Initially he started studying film and cinematography but ended up getting a degree in theater arts. He began spending time doing freelance work and some work for a local newspaper, around the age of 19 he gathered up a few essential items and traveled to India. His career was kick started when he ventured into Pakistan and was smuggled by a band of Afghani refugees into the country. From this trip we get the iconic picture of the “Afghan Girl,” taken in 1984, which appeared on the cover of National Geographic in 1985, this image is one of the most iconic images around the world, both captivating and piercing. Steve McCurry follows a similar theme in all of his other work, immersing the onlooker into the culture of all different countries and including pictures from his travels to all six continents. His work incorporates themes from both ancient cultures to present day modern cultures. He still photographs for magazines today, and is a member of Magnum, a prominent photo agency.
