Message from the Head of School Welcome to Tonight’s Sports Award Dinner
As most of you know, I’m a huge supporter of sport and still have very early memories of passing a heavy leather rugby ball around at the age of four. I never reached any great claims of fame as a sportsman but I loved the participation and the team connection. I’m a huge fan of most sports particularly rugby, tennis, basketball and cricket. It always amazes me when you think back to your childhood how much of your memories are sports related. For me, it was the Christmas family cricket matches at the beach, watching the All Blacks playing the Lions at 2:00 am in the morning on a black and white television and having cheese toasties at half time. I think at the end of the day the memories stay because they are not only happy memories but generally they involve family or special team members that eventually become lifelong friends. As the Head of School at Bangkok Patana School it is abundantly clear to me that sport is incredibly valued by the staff and students. We have some of the finest sports coaches in the world and we have students that are dedicated and passionate to improve their sporting skills. We have supportive parents who are always cheering from the sidelines and enjoying the games just as much as their kids are. This year I got to see some outstanding football, swimming, basketball, rugby, badminton, gymnastics, tennis and the list goes on........ My highlight of the sporting season this year would have to be the amazing SEASAC wins for the Senior Girls’ Tennis team and the SEASAC Boys’ Basketball team. What a wonderful confirmation of the hard work, commitment and talent of not only our students but our amazing coaching staff including Head Coach Daniel Ahl and coaches Jan Viratprasert and Danai Downer, Simon Tyers and Coach Carlos. There is no doubt in my mind that one of the reasons why our sports programme at Bangkok Patana School is so strong is because of the dedicated, professional and passionate PE staff we have at this school lead so capably by our Acting Assistant Principal Sports and Activities Mr. Andrew Tatam. Andrew has had an excellent two terms in his important overall sporting leadership role. Special thanks to all of our sports administrators, grounds people, and caterers and housekeeping staff; we couldn’t do it without you. I’m very sad that Coach Nicola our amazing Head Gymnastic Coach is leaving us at the end of this academic year. She has been an inspirational coach since she started at Bangkok Patana in August 2013. The gymnastic programme under Coach Nicola has flourished and the results speak for themselves. We wish Nicola all the very best as she moves back to the UK. Congratulations to all of our students for participating, aiming high and most important of all enjoying your sport. Have an enjoyable night celebrating each other’s talent on and off the field.

Message from the Acting Assistant Principal Extra-curricular Activities and Sports It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to the very first web based Bangkok Patana Sports round up and annual awards. This follows on from our Sports Awards Dinner which was held in the Sports Hall as a marvellous evening of celebration and signifies the conclusion of yet another successful sporting year for BPS teams within the school. In liaison with our students, through our wonderful Athletics Council, we have chosen not to produce a paper booklet this year as an attempt to be a little greener in support of many whole school initiatives already in place. Our school teams have continued to thrive and compete upon all levels and we should be rightly proud of the diversity and dedication of our sporting communities. We have participated in all BISAC Sports and nearly all that SEASAC have to offer, as well as traveling to China for the Under 13 FOBISIA Games, enjoying FOBISIA Sailing and Swimming and most recently, hosting a very well received Primary FOBISIA Games. Focusing upon these recently hosted Games I feel that this event was a prime example of our community pulling together to produce a marvellous and FUN event. Secondary PE staff gave up valuable time to support the athletics and umpire the Tee Ball. Feedback from student athletes, coaches and parents alike was very positive and much of this was down to the hard work of teaching colleagues, our wonderful buildings and grounds team and the ever supportive Sports and Activities team. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you, the students, for dedicating so much time and committing sincerely to the sports programme. Without our dedicated student athletes we certainly would not be in a position to offer the huge range and depth that we are so proud of. To those students leaving Patana, the whole PE and Sports staff would like to wish you well and we hope you continue to enjoy sport for many years to come. At Bangkok Patana School, the sports programme gets a lot of support from the Foundation Board and the Senior Leadership team which is very much appreciated. Our facilities are constantly praised by colleagues and this allows us to host some wonderful and successful events. I would like to thank all of our parents for your invaluable support, both to your children and to the sports teams throughout the year. I would like to recognise a wonderful Sports and Activities Department Khun Nui, Khun Suly, Khun Champ, Khun Korn and Khun Peach for all their support and help throughout the year. These people do a lot of work behind the scenes that tends to go unnoticed and they ensure that your season runs smoothly. Finally a huge thank you to all of our Coaches, both internal and external, who have contributed to the development of our teams throughout the school. Without your involvement, expertise, enthusiasm and dedication we could not sustain such a large programme. You give up a lot of precious time and we are all very grateful. Many thanks to the following; the grounds staff, Khun Prawit and all the estates department, Khun Kaew, and her team for all their support in organising our many overseas and local trips. SEASON 1 Under 13 Boys’ Tennis
The boys Under 13 team have enjoyed a good progressive season. Eleven of the twelve boys selected were previously involved in the Junior Tigers squad, whilst all have been involved in the Tigers squad and many were in the Under 13 squad last year so all worked well together. Fixture wise the team has had its busiest ever season, with the long awaited new BISAC league starting all schools had to play five league matches to qualify for BISAC. The boys won the league winning four of their five fixtures which was an excellent achievement. Tournament wise we hosted both the invitational doubles event which saw our top pair of Mark N and Amery narrowly losing in the final and the BISAC singles event which saw Mark finish as runner up in the A draw, Te runner up in the B draw, Toon winner of the C draw and Arin winner of the D draw. Over half-term seven of the squad travelled to Brunei to take part in the FOBISIA tournament, again Mark N was the best performer finishing 3rd overall whilst team captain Joseph reached the last 8, two of the squad’s younger members Brett and Arin finished 2nd and 4th overall in the Under 11 boys event which bodes well for the future. The final event of the season was the BISAC team event where we entered three teams: the A team played well all day to reach the final of the Championship where Harrow proved too strong for us whilst the B team won the B team event with the C team finishing 3rd in the same event. Under 13 Girls’ Tennis
With many of last year’s team moved out of the age group I picked a young largely inexperienced team but still one I felt would do well. The new BISAC league helped to give the newer members of the team some valuable early season match play and all impressed with their results and enthusiasm to do well. The team won the league remaining unbeaten throughout the season. The girls played in four tournaments/events starting with the invitational doubles which after an almighty scare in their semi-final Balloon and Clara went on to win against the top pair from NIST in the final. This was followed by the individual singles event held this year at Harrow school. Balloon, as she was to be all season, was unstoppable on the day winning the title losing only one solitary game all day. Gem did very well to win her group and reached the quarter-finals. The team event again at Harrow saw the team comfortably reach the final where we lost 1-2 to NIST to relinquish the title we had held since the tournament started in 2011. The girls’ final event was the FOBISIA championships in Brunei. Balloon carried on her winning ways defeating Clara in the final, Pammy finished 5th overall winning her plate section and Gem was runner up in the u11 event. Overall the season was very successful and enjoyable. Under 13 Boys’ Basketball
The BPS Boys Under 13 team was made up of mainly new players who didn’t have much experience playing together. The road to BISAC during the season was hard at times and we used the games to know each other better and find the right chemistry. At BISAC we played four games, of which three in a strong pool with a dominating ISB team, NIST and Traill. We started a bit nervously, which resulted in losing against ISB and NIST. After that we got our act together and it showed that we were growing as a team during the tournament. In the third game against Traill we played more boldly and with confidence. It would become a game full of suspense until the last seconds when Pomme clinched the victory by one point with his last buzzer-beating attack to the basket. The following game against RIS for 5 th place was a very convincing win (29-13) with fast and attractive basketball. There is more to achieve for the players of this team and more to improve to reach full potential. Keep up the good work and who knows what the basketball future might bring.

Under 13 Girls’ Basketball
Coach Fon and I were given the pleasure of coaching the Under 13 girls’ Basketball team this year and the girls definitely worked hard to make the whole experience very enjoyable indeed. The season started off well with many of the matches ending with land sliding wins, and even when we lost to Harrow the girls took the experience in well as they soon learned that disappointment is an essential part of making athletes grow mentally. Having both won and lost during the season the girls moved forward to the BISAC tournament hosted by RIS with enthusiasm and a sense of growing maturity. Throughout the tournament day, many aspects of the girls that were not seen before during the training days and friendly matches were seen. A higher level of determination and hunger to win was visible in each and every one of the players and even though the girls were unable to reach the finals for the tournament, I, as a coach, was extremely pleased to see that the effort that was put into training throughout the season has paid off very well in terms of the girls growth as Basketball players both physically and mentally. I hope that the skills that they honed will be of good use to them now when they move on into the new season with Junior Varsity and Varsity Basketball. Well Done Girls! Under 15 Boys’ Basketball
The season started with a high number of students attending a competitive series of trials proving that support for the basketball program is high. A strong performance at the Shrewsbury Friendship Tournament was a good start to the season, eventually finishing second to Harrow. With the team working hard in practice, players started to hone their skills. Our boys were dominant during the season games finishing first in the league, losing only once in an away game to that same Harrow team. However, sometimes finishing first puts a target on your back and opposing teams focused their efforts on trying to stop us. Our BISAC began with two incredibly close losses to Trail and Shrewsbury which unfortunately meant that the highest we could finish was fifth. Extra motivation for our next game came in the form of our opposition, Harrow. Fed up with losing to them during the season we would go on to mercy them, beating them thirty points before going on to mercy NIST and finish the season with a fifth place at BISAC. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the players for the efforts this season and hope that they progress through the Junior Varsity teams on their way to Varsity in the future. Once again the girls’ team has been particularly strong and competitive within Bangkok finishing in third place BISAC beating SHB by a comfortable margin! This has been an excellent team effort, with very strong contributions from the entire squad. The girls showed great character and a fantastic team spirit to dramatically improve both individually and as a team throughout the season. The future for BPS girls Under 15 basketball looks bright, as there are lots of talented players who will still be about next year to hopefully improve on our results this year. Under 15 Boys’ Rugby
At the start of the Under 15's rugby season I was not filled with great hope for the team due to the previous seasons results, with many of the team new to the game and only being introduced to the egg shaped ball. But with the introduction of our new Welsh coach we knew that our season was about to change for the better. I can definitely tell you, after a few dreadful sevens sessions in the 40 degrees weather of Bangkok, we weren't messing around that's for sure. Especially with a coach who pushed us to the limits and got the best out of us. But it wasn't only our discipline and hard work that had got us performing as a team, but also the chemistry and how tightly packed we had become as a group of players. This was definitely something that I think had differed us from all other teams. The U15's rugby was definitely a journey we won’t forget, going from partially nothing to becoming quite a powerful side to compete against. We lost out to NIST by one try at BISAC to end up as runnersup, but this is just motivation to take the title next season. Under 15 Touch
Remaining unbeaten going into BISAC, with only 1 try scored against them in four games, meant the Under 15 Girls’ Touch Rugby team were under a lot of pressure to take first place in the end of season tournament held this year at BPS. The season had started off exceptionally well with BPS demonstrating speed, great team work, good understanding of the game and strong attacking play against a slightly less experienced opposition. Winning 10-1 and 14-0 against Harrow and NIST respectively did a lot to boost confidence and ignite a real desire to claim victory at BISAC. As the season progressed the girls worked hard on their communication, defensive play and offensive tactics which led to wins against Shrewsbury (6-0) and ISB (3-0). The latter game proved particularly challenging and was a commendable win; playing ISB is not only tough competition but always proves to be a mental game with BPS often generating forced errors due to lack in self-confidence and breakdown of communication under pressure. With the other schools having notably improved over the season, BISAC brought new challenges as the pressure mounted throughout the day and it was clear it was not going to be an easy victory. With wins across the board, BPS claimed 1st place position after a particularly exciting final match against ISB, demonstrating passion, competitive play and much improved discipline on both sides. Whilst strong from the off-set the team have worked exceptionally hard and have proven to be more adaptable and focused in their approach than they were at the start of the year. It has been wonderful to see tries scored from all members of the team with particular high scorers being Anna, Ela, Sophie, Moniqa and Sarah. All the team should be highly commended for an excellent season and thank you to Sophie and Alex for the excellent leadership. Honours: BISAC CHAMPIONS 12

SEASON 2 Under 13 Boys’ Football
The Under 13 team had a fantastic season and played some excellent throughout the league campaign and BISAC tournaments. During the league season the boys lost only one game and finished as runners up in what was a very competitive division. The boys went to BISAC as top seeds in Pool B but this placed us in the group of death with both Ruamrudee and Trail fielding extremely strong teams. The first game v RIS was one of our best performances of the season and we secured a 3-0 victory. The next game saw us come up against a Harrow team who had lost their first game 4-0 to Trail. The team showed their class by going one better and secured a 5-0 victory putting us top of the group going into the last game. Coming up against a team that selects boys on ability and trains 5 times per week was always going to be hard and despite our best effort we lost to eventual winners Trail. The boys came second in the group and would have loved another go against ISB in a semi-final but with no semi-finals we were condemned to a playoff v NIST for a bronze medal. The game v NIST was our best performance of the tournament and one of the most bizarre games to be involved in. Despite several chances and hitting the woodwork 3 times we somehow lost the game and came away without a medal. Performances this year and the fact that half the team were Year 7 bodes well for next season. Under 13 Girls’ Football
This has been a very exciting and enjoyable year for the Under 13 Girls’ football. A strong squad consisting of technically good footballers demonstrated their potential from the start of the season. This, couple with a cohort of experienced veteran Year 8s and a sprinkling of skilful Year 7s made for a balanced squad. At the BISAC tournament each team member was able to contribute to the system and play a full part in the team’s early successes. In the group stages progress was made and good wins were achieved against the opposition teams such as ICS and ISB, which suggested that success was to come. At the back Janelle, Anna, Beth and Annabelle were solid and dependable. In the Middle Emiko and Paxo were dynamic and creative. On the wings Niemph, Motty, Mia and Scrappy created width and chances using their pace. Up front the dependable Daphne bagged the goals. Importantly, the versatile super-sub Camilla could be counted upon to cover, most notably in the semi-final when playing centre forward to score the goal of the tournament! Finally, the ever-dependable, rock-solid Adys made important saves at vital times. In the final against Harrow BPS defended stoically and created countless well-crafted opportunities. However, the game did not go to plan and with it nearing conclusion and at 2-1 down the girls showed needed to show real determination and composure. This was epitomized by Daphne who coolly slotted a last minute penalty to take the game to extra-time. During two periods of extra time, BPS dominated but the opposition block defended their goal. Inevitably, the game was decided on the lottery of penalties and unfortunately it wasn’t our day and the girls ended up runners-up in the tournament. The attitude of the girls throughout the season was excellent. Significantly, after losing the stressful penalty shootout the girls faced defeat with a sporting good grace. A win would have been a fitting reward for the girl’s efforts and attitude throughout the season, however, football is a funny old game! Throughout the league games leading up to BISAC the team played exceptionally well, only losing one game to RIS when we had 3 key players missing and a further 3 had to come off injured. Therefore the team set their sights high and were really positive going into the tournament. However, a slow start in both of their opening games and disappointing performances all round meant they lost their first two games and could not finish higher than 7 th. With the pressure off in their last group game they beat NIST (the eventual BISAC winners) and were the only team throughout the whole tournament to score past them! The team finished in 7th with an emphatic 9-2 win but these last two performances were too little, too late. A capable team but they should take on board the old cliché; hardwork beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. Honours: BISAC 7th Team Awards: MVP: MIP: CC:

The Under 15 Girls’ showed everyone throughout the season what a great team they are. In every game they played they dominated the opposition, playing fast paced, positive football throughout. Unfortunately, as every footballer knows, results don’t always go your way. Despite dominating the BISAC final, and indeed the whole day, the girls eventually lost the final on penalties. But that takes nothing away from what was a fantastic season from everyone. Under 13 Boys’ Badminton
After being selected for the team, I was excited for a new adventure with my teammates. I was chosen as the captain of the team and I realized all the responsibilities I now had. We headed straight into matches against Shrewsbury, Ruamrudee and NIST. The bus rides were hilarious, with people trying to chill, watch series, motivate others, or just sleep, the rides were nearly the best bit. Shrewsbury was our first team win. But after those games, I felt we could improve and so did my teammates. So we had few training sessions and then came along our first tournament. Even though we didn’t win, I saw how much we had improved in that short amount of time. We would score 10 points more than we did in the league games and even beat our opponents. We understood our opponents were tough, better skilled than us, but we had a few months to train and improve to face them at BISAC. The months went fast as BISAC finally arrived and the team was ready. Unfortunately, one member, Amery could not attend it as he was sick and so our sub, Seb took his place. Our first game was against ISB and I was up first against the opponent I had faced at our first tournament but I beat him then so I felt confident. Although I lost the first set, I knew I could beat him in the last two sets, and I did. Our Singles 2, Paul also won his first match. We were 2 games up but sadly our unbeatable Doubles 1 pair finally lost as did our Doubles 2 and Singles 3. So we had lost our first game. But motivation was still high in the team to try and win our 2nd game. We knew this was going to be a challenge as Ruamrudee have a strong side. Then the game came and I had to play my game which I lost, singles 2 lost, singles 3 lost and doubles 2 lost. But at least, our doubles 1 won. I tried to keep the team happy, but all they wanted was food so we got some pizza and we all went home. What a great season it was with the boys with such a great team spirit. Under 13 Girls’ Badminton
This badminton season was a blast. We had a wide variety of players that have played last year meanwhile some were new to the team this year. As the team worked together, which boosted our skills and techniques. I personally had a lot of fun with my teammates and I’m sure that they did too. We started off the season strong with a win at Shrewsbury with the total score of 3-2. Our next match was tough but we managed to win 3-2. Our next match was at NIST, and to our dismay, we lost 4-1. Next, we had a RIS Invitational game and won 3rd! After that match we played a league match with ISB. It was a very close match but we lost 3-2. Our last league match was at home against Harrow but we lost 3-2. Our next match was everyone’s final match, BISAC. We lost our first match against NIST, won our 2nd against ISB and beat Harrow for 3rd place. As a team we shared so many memories all of us will remember and I hope everyone will try out next year for the team! Under 15 Boys’ Badminton
This was a young team for the boys this year. All players were new from Under 13 last year apart from one. With this borne in mind the Under 15 boys’ team have had a very promising season and have undoubtedly learned a great deal from the experience. In fact, the boys won half of their matches throughout the season. They also had a fairly close match at BISAC for a place in the finals. Unfortunately they lost this encounter and played for bronze, narrowly missing out and coming fourth. Those that came to support the matches witnessed some great battles and determination on court. Tony spent more time in the air and on his stomach than he did on two feet. Considering this was a young team, they have done extremely well and I look forward to a very successful season next year when the team will be pretty much unchanged, apart from our Captain becoming too old. Under 15 Girls’ Badminton
The girls’ team this year was a very experienced team with half of the team playing Under 15 last year. We welcomed some new faces in the form of Shreya, Alina, Gene and Rita, all of whom provided some excellent results. As the season progressed, hopes were high for the end of season BISAC tournament. The girls won all of their matches throughout the season and also took gold at the RIS invitational. The closest matches throughout the season were with Ruamrudee International School. We were destined to meet them in the finals at BISAC and indeed we did. It was inevitable it would go to the final doubles match, although we did have points to win gold in other strings. The final was eventually lost 21-19. It is worth remembering at this point that no individuals are responsible for winning or losing tournaments but that it is a shared responsibility. I was extremely proud of all of the team throughout the season and in particular at the BISAC tournament. Well done everyone. Swimming Team 2015/16
The TigerSharks team have had another successful year. The top team award and numerous individual awards at ISB SwimFest in November was followed by some excellent swims and the overall team award at our own Feeding Frenzy International meet in December attended by 500 athletes from Asia! In January 52 athletes swam at FOBISIA in Phuket winning Top Team as well as three age group trophies at the meet. Fourteen Patana swimmers competing in the Thai Nationals in individual events. Ton Kiangsiri won a Silver medal in the 17-18 years 50m Breaststroke and Coach Bank a Bronze in the Open Ladies 50m Breaststroke. Chloe Burkill, Max Stockdale, Prin Chantarangkul and Lachlan Dibbayawan all made finals. The 12-13 Year Girls 4 x 200m Freestyle relay won an historic Silver medal. In the SEASAC event in Kuala Lumpur the 13-14 Boys won their age group with the Girls aged 13-14 and 15+ team third in their age groups. Overall the Girls team were third and the Boys second with TigerSharks a close third in the overall meet. Many personal best times were set by the team. BISAC 2016 saw both the Senior and Junior teams crowned Champions. The junior title was the first time since 2009 that BPS had won this event. All but two age group trophies were won by the team. A small team also went to Dragons Den in Singapore finishing 5th overall at UWC EAST with Chloe Burkhill and Daniel Fuchs winning age group trophies. This year just under 50 school records have been broken by the team as well as many personal times achieved along the way. A very well done to the whole team and the coaching staff. Climbing 2015/16
This year the Patana Tigers climbing team have competed against Harrow International School in both the ‘bouldering’ format and the ‘top roping’ format. Last year’s bouldering results were significantly improved upon, overcoming some early nerves from our newest team members to take 10 medals including four gold. On February 11th BPS hosted Harrow for the top roping competition. Confidence was high among the team which showed in the results; Tigers sweeping the medal table taking 12 medals including seven gold! A special mention to Earth Kornsri who claimed the highest ever points total at a BPS top roping competition across all age categories. The Tigers met ISB’s climbing team on 26th March for a social climb, hosted by ISB ahead of next year’s fixtures. We look forward to growing the competition and meeting new schools next season.

The season was very long with not many games. The team played and defeated both Bangkok Prep by 38-2 and Shrewsbury International School 5-0. The boys were very committed in a long hot season without any games, as many as 30 students regularly attended training, many of the games were internal and the boys were undefeated against our Under 11 boys and girls as well as beating our Under 15 girls who finished as BISAC Champions. The final game of the season was a tight game v Shrewsbury where fielding errors cost us in a narrow 6-7 defeat. Many of the team will play Under 13 again next year and some of the older players will make the Under 15 squad very strong. Under 15 Boys’ Softball
This year Patana have produced yet another strong and competitive Under 15 softball team. A few of the squad from last year were still in the team along with some other talented players that tried out. The boys worked very hard this year and were a really keen bunch with attendance to training being nearly 100%. Slowly but surely they developed as a team and became a really solid outfit both in the field and batting. During the season our results were very impressive winning all of our fixtures (with relative ease). Heading into BISAC the team were full of confidence and looking to claim the BISAC crown. The biggest thing to contend with would be keeping the boys level headed as a few good results throughout the year had boosted their egos and they would at times lose focus. Credit to the team though as they did maintain their focus during the tournament (which lasted 2 separate days due to the rain!) and ran out comfortable winners. Our path to the final was beating NIST, ASB and HIS setting us up to a final with SHB. The final started very competitively with good batting and fielding from both teams but in the end Patana’s class started to show and thanks to some great fielding and consistent hitting we won 12-4. Overall it was a great season where the boys improved massively throughout the year. On top of the team this year we also have a squad who come training made up of the players who didn’t make the team this year. They have helped at training and given match practice to the players, so all the success we had is also shared with them. Another big thank you goes to my Assistant Coach Kieran Jagdeo who has been a massive help and really helped to improve the boys hitting. The first game was against our big rivals NIST and the competitive nature of the first game led to lots of anxiety and nervousness amongst the team. As such, we lost comfortably due to many fielding and pitching errors. However, this was the catalyst for some excellent work on the training field and the team really turned it around by going on to win the rest of their league games at ease. They only conceded 1 run in their next 3 league games and scored over 40 runs! This fantastic run of form continued into BISAC, which was played as a round robin format. We beat ISB 7-0 in the first game, SHB 31-1 in the second, which meant we needed to beat NIST to confirm our status as BISAC champions. The NIST game started very close but one fantastic innings put us into the lead 15-2 with only 15 minutes left on the clock before the torrential rain stopped play. Due to the score and the fact that there was very little time left NIST conceded the game at 15-2. The team were an absolute pleasure to work with all season and thoroughly deserved their BISAC champion status. I look forward to seeing many of the team making the Varsity team in the near future. This season saw a small but dedicated squad of players take on the challenge of BISAC. With games starting straight away it was important for the team to train hard and perfect the basic skills. The team worked on improving fundamental volleyball skills, such as passing, serving and attacking the ball. The league games throughout the season have certainly allowed all players to have the opportunity to play and try out their newly learned skills. The league game results throughout the season didn’t quite go as planned, however, they allowed for good practice before going into the BISAC tournament. BISAC was hosted at ICS; a great chance for the boys to show their hard work. The team finished 2nd in their pool which then allowed us to play for the bronze medal against SHB. Unfortunately this wasn’t meant to be and the team finished 4th after a tough battle. Well done to all the players who have improved significantly in performance and tactical knowledge of the game. Under 13 Girls’ Volleyball
The Under 13 girls Volleyball team have had a very strong competitive season this year within Bangkok and finished in second place at BISAC losing to an extremely strong NIST team 23 - 25 in each set. The girls were extremely happy with this result although a little disappointed not to win as they had lost to NIST in the league games by over 10 points in each. This showed how hard they have worked through the season and how much progress they have made individually but also as a team. There has been some amazing progress made by individuals who were playing in their first season of volleyball and outstanding examples and leadership set by those playing in their second season. They have had a fantastic team spirit throughout the season and each game and this was rewarded with their second place finish. In fact they only lost two games all season and both were to NIST. A number of the girls will be moving up to the under 15 team next year so we wish them good luck for the future and hope that the remaining girls will continue to work with the same commitment, understanding and spirit. A special mention to Tasha, Anya and Audry who were all voted by the team as most improved players and Clara, Mimi and Kelly for setting such great examples. This team is very much a team in a development phase. With lots of Year 9 boys in the team and very few returners from last year, there was lots to learn this season. Much time was spent learning basic skills and combining them into a simple 2 setter system. Throughout the season the team were successful in their league games, beating many schools and showing progress in knowledge and experience. Tactical understanding improved as well as defensive skills. The second half of the season saw us focus on serving and attacking in order for us to be more aggressive when in possession of the ball. We finished 2nd in the league putting us in a good place for BISAC. BISAC, however, didn’t go as planned. Many unforced errors on our side of the net and poor decision making left us coming last in our pool, playing for 7th or 8th place. We played TCIS in our final game, beating them convincingly in the first set, dropping our game in the 2nd and winning the 3rd through serving pressure. We finished 7th overall; this was hugely disappointing for both players and coaches. However, with many lessons learnt about mental strength in a competitive environment and how to cope through adversity, I hope the boys continue to play volleyball in the future. This has been a terrific season and this team most definitely has the future of Girls’ Varsity Volleyball under development! We narrowly lost a number of our league games through the season and placed as 5th seed entering into the BISAC tournament. Due to some fantastic training and commitment in the final 3 weeks of the season, we were entering BISAC as a much improved team. We were proud to beat HIS in our pool, a game which we felt we should have been able to win, earlier in the season. It was a nail biting match v ASB, with both teams battling out the final few points to qualify for the Bronze Medal match. After being awarded winners of this game and celebrating this fantastic achievement, the final point was then dramatically overturned which threw our concentration and unfortunately we went on to lose this game It was a tough lesson that a competitive game can change direction at any time and challenge your mental toughness and levels of concentration. Following this disappointment, the girls re-grouped and sealed the next v ISB game to finish 5th overall. We felt we were deserving of more and will be back next year to rise through the ranks! After the majority of last year’s winning BISAC team moved out of the age group the team selected this year was a mix of young and old. The team played well in their BISAC league matches winning four out of five to finish second and although none of the pairs reached the final of the doubles invitational event all who played had vital competitive court time. The BISAC singles saw an excellent performance from team captain Jonah who reached the final of the A draw, Amery was runner up in the B draw and Te 3rd in the C draw. The BISAC team event was the highlight of the season with everything clicking into place on the day. The boys all played their best tennis and remained undefeated all day beating ISB in the final to defend the title we won last year. Post season the team travelled to Phuket to compete in the tennis 4’s event. Jonah again played some good tennis to reach the final where he competed well but ultimately was beaten into 2nd place. Season 3 as ever is a short season for the tennis teams but with five of the girls fresh from a very successful Varsity season we were already thoroughly prepared. The girls won all of their league matches comfortably and went into the first event, the invitational doubles, with plenty of confidence. The girls played at a high level all day with Patana securing a 1, 2, 3 with Balloon and Moniqa first, Clara and Adelia 2nd and Sashini and Tess 3rd. The BISAC singles event followed a week later and again saw strong performances with six of the girls reaching the quarter finals and three making the semi-final. Balloon went on to claim the title and with it a hat-trick of titles to add to the U13 and U19 titles she had already won with Moniqa in 3rd and Zahra 4th. The Team event was the one the team was keen to win after finishing runners up last year and good solid tennis throughout the day saw us reach the final where we defeated NIST to regain the title. Following the regular season the team travelled to Phuket to compete in the Phuket tennis 4’s event which once again saw Balloon triumph beating Moniqa in the final with Tess an excellent 3rd place. Under 13 FOBISIA Dulwich College Shanghai, March 2016
This year the Under 13 FOBISIA team were treated to an adventure - Patana’s first competition in China! Once training was completed, visas obtained and our bags packed; the 29 students and 8 staff headed to the airport. The 3 day tournament began with the Girls’ and Boys’ Football. After a number of gruelling training sessions both teams felt prepared for the challenges ahead of them on the pitch. However, none of the students or coaches were quite ready for the freezing conditions! Heading from the warmth of Bangkok to the 9 degree Celsius chill of Shanghai was a hurdle we could not prepare for, but the addition of layers, hoodies and woolly hats did help. The football tournament was a straight round robin, with no finals. The boys started the tournament positively with a 2-1 win over GIS, however they could not maintain this momentum losing 2 and drawing 2 of their final 4 matches. Overall the boys’ competition was very close, and BPS managed to secure a Bronze medal due to a superior goal difference over Shrewsbury. The boys showed a lot of determination against some very strong opposition, with notable performances from Prompt and Will. The girls’ team looked extremely strong, and definite medal contenders from the start of the tournament. The girls won their opening two matches against GIS and Dulwich Shanghai, however, lost a close encounter with TTS 1-0. Despite this setback the girls went on to win their next two matches, and thanks to TTS dropping points against other opposition, ensured they finished top, rightfully earning the gold medal. The girls played excellent football, keeping possession of the ball and making it hard for other teams to score. The other coaches at the tournament commented on the quality of the football played by the BPS teamwell done girls! Notable performances in the girls’ football were Adys in goal, Emiko and Janelle. Day 2 saw the team take to the basketball court, following the same round robin format as the football tournaments. Similar to the football, the boys’ basketball won their opening match against TTS. However, they lost their next 4 matches, finishing in 5th place overall. The girls started the tournament with a close win against TTS, followed by another 2 point victory against GIS. The team’s confidence was starting to grow, and with two more comfortable victories against Shrewsbury and Dulwich, it meant that the result between KLASS and BPS would determine the tournament winner. Unfortunately, in a tightly fought contest the KLASS team proved slightly too 34
strong for BPS, meaning Patana won the silver medal. An excellent result for the girls against some very competitive teams! Day 3 provided the opportunity for our athletes and swimmers to show off. Once again the cold conditions required students to adapt. The day started with the athletics tournament, Patana secured an array of podium finishes, notably Nadon winning 5 medals in ‘A class’ events, Vincent achieving 4 ‘A’ medals, Emiko securing 3 ‘A’ medals and Aiko receiving 3 medals. The BPS athletics team finished 3rd overall. The afternoon was the final event of the tournament- swimming. Similar to the athletics, our swimmers dominated a large number of races, with plenty of BPS representation on the podium. Vincent added to his medal haul from the morning’s athletics with 4 additional swim medals. Niamh showcased her immense talent by winning every event she entered! All the swimmers’ efforts paid off when the BPS team finished 2nd overall. Well done to all who competed across the 3 days of competition. Gymnastics
The Patana Gymnastics Team have attended a record number of competitions this year with 10 in total; three overseas trips and seven local meets, three of which we’ve hosted ourselves. With a large depth of squad we regularly enter teams at every level of competition with good success, particularly this year for our boys. Across the major competitions of the year – FOBISIA, SEASAC and BISAC - the Gymnastics Team have taken an impressive 14 podium finishes in the individual all-around competitions for the boys and 10 for the girls, and a total of 19 trophies in the team competitions with 8 of them being championship titles. Many more medals and ribbons have also been won in individual apparatus finals where event specialists have their chance to shine. In Term 1 Patana held their first in-house competition, readying our team members for a busy year of competition. Later we hosted the 3rd FOBISIA Gymnastics Invitational Championships and our higher-level girls also had the opportunity to attend the UWC Dover Invitational in Singapore. With participation numbers and the level of gymnastics within South East Asia increasing year on year it was a tough term of competition with the girls’ Level 5 team and boys’ Level 2 Senior and Level 3 juniors giving standout performances. Term 2 was again a busy time with the ISB Black & Gold Competition in February, the new Senior Division SEASAC in Singapore in March and the Moose Games competition in April where many of our Development Squad gymnasts had the opportunity to compete for the first time. Term highlights included winning a team trophy at every level and every age group at the ISB competition with every boys’ team winning gold, Level 3 boys winning SEASAC Gold and Rebecca Russo winning Bronze in the all-around competition at SEASAC Level 6, and taking home the overall team championship trophy at the Moose Games. We have already, in Term 3, attended both BISAC and Junior Division SEASAC in Hong Kong with our Y1/Y2 Grading Day and the NIST Invitational competition still to come, giving our younger gymnasts plenty of opportunity to show off all their hard work in the gym. And it certainly has not gone unnoticed with our Level 2 Junior and Senior girls 36
winning their BISAC competitions and taking 1st and 2nd spots in their individual all-around competitions, and our Level 3 Juniors also taking gold for the team with two individual all-around podium finishers. For the boys the success continued with Level 3 boys finishing more than 10 point above the second place team, a phenomenal achievement at the end of a triumphant year for them. The future looks bright, with the combined determination and efforts of our spectacular gymnasts, wonderful student-coaches and committed coaching team, and a wealth of talent emerging from our foundation stages and recreational programme the sky is the limited for the Patana Gymnastics Team. Under 15 Water Polo
It was another great season for both the BPS Under 19 and Under 15 Water Polo Teams. This year was challenging with a young Under 19 team and almost a brand new Under 15. However, throughout the season our Water Polo teams dedicated themselves to the sport. At BISAC, our teams performance was great especially for the Under 15 team who played outstanding polo against ISB in what became a highly contested match. They managed to win their game in the last 4 seconds with a goal by Oak. This showing from our U15 shows the depth and talent in our ranks. Under 19 played ISB for their final match of the season in which ISB won. However, for the last 2 quarter BPS managed to stop the ISB juggernaut from scoring anymore. Sailing
This season Bangkok Patana made a big step forward in the sport of sailing. The year began with trials at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club with 17 sailors vying for the 8-10 places available on the team. Following the autumn training sessions the team assembled for the Inter-School Sailing Championship in January where BPS came up against eight International Schools including familiar foes, Bangkok Preparatory and Harrow International. Twenty-two qualification races took place and a delighted BPS team qualified through to the semi-finals however were narrowly beaten by Harrow at this stage. With many lessons learned the BPS team reassembled for further training sessions in preparation for the FOBISIA Sailing Championship in March. This next event series consisted of team racing, individual racing and the overall winner's’ award (best school across both events). In the team event, following two days of intense racing, BPS had accrued enough points and, with fantastic team spirit, progressed through to the final on the third day against Bangkok Prep. In the final, Bangkok Prep proved too strong to overcome leaving the BPS team in a very well fought and honourable second place. Whilst our three team crews were battling it out close to shore the individual competitors experienced three long days of racing further offshore. Conditions proved too difficult for some less experienced sailors in other schools however BPS remained strong throughout. Both the individual trophy and overall winners’ trophy came down to the last race of the individual series. Aim kept his nerve and, with the wind conditions moderating a little, took the win in the final race to secure his Individual title. With wins for both Bangkok Prep and BPS in the two disciplines, and both equal on points, the deciding factor was the position of the second team member in the individual event. After a tough three days of sailing it was Peter who gave us the edge, demonstrating great consistency, and allowing BPS to take the overall title. Overall, it has been an excellent season and the students should be immensely proud of their achievements and for the superb team spirit they have demonstrated throughout the season.
