Senior Awards Evening Junior Varsity & Varsity
A Very Warm Welcome to Tonight’s Sports Awards Dinner from the Head of School As most of you know, I’m a huge supporter of sport and still have very early memories of passing a heavy leather rugby ball around at the age of four. I never reached any great claims of fame as a sportsman but I loved the participation and the team connection. I’m a huge fan of most sports particularly rugby, tennis, basketball and cricket. It always amazes me when you think back to your childhood how much of your memories are sports related. For me, it was the Christmas family cricket matches at the beach, watching the All Blacks playing the Lions at 2:00am in the morning on a black and white television and having cheese toasties at half time. I think at the end of the day the memories stay because they are not only happy memories but generally they involve family or special team members that eventually become lifelong friends.
There is no doubt in my mind that one of the reasons why our sports programme at Bangkok Patana School is so strong is because of the dedicated, professional and passionate PE staff we have at this school lead so capably by our Assistant Principal Sports and Activities Ms Cindy Adair. Cindy has had an excellent first year in her important sporting leadership role. Special thanks to all of our sports administrators, grounds people, caterers and housekeeping staff; we couldn’t do it without you.
As the Head of School at Bangkok Patana School it is abundantly clear to me that sport is incredibly valued by the staff and students. We have some of the finest sports coaches in the world and we have students that are dedicated and passionate to improve their sporting skills. We have supportive parents who are always cheering from the side-lines and enjoying the games just as much as their kids are .This year I got to see some outstanding football, swimming, basketball, rugby, badminton, gymnastics, tennis and the list goes on... My highlight of the sporting season this year would have to be the amazing SEASAC wins for the Senior Boys’ Tennis team and the SEASAC Girls’ Softball team, what a wonderful confirmation of the hard work, commitment and talent of not only our students but our amazing coaching staff including Head Tennis Coach Daniel Ahl and Softball Coach Adam Reid.
We thank and wish all the very best to our Head Swimming Coach, Mr Richard Thorp as he and his family move to Beijing in August. We also wish Assistant Tennis Coach, Danai Downer all the very best as he moves to Harrow International School in August as their new Head Tennis Coach.
I would like to thank and wish all the very best to secondary PE teacher Ms Laura Bebbington who has been a valuable and dedicated coach for six years. She is passionate about her volleyball and will be heading to Singapore in August.
Congratulations to all of our students for participating, aiming high and most important of all enjoying your sport. Have an enjoyable night celebrating each other’s talent on and off the field. Matt Mills Head of School
