Why is Progress so Important? Peter Taylder, Primary Senior Teacher, Leading Student Progress

rogress is the proof that learning is happening. It is rewarding and motivating. Every step forward we see in our progress spurs us on to achieving our goals and even our dreams. Our mission at Bangkok Patana is to ensure that students reach their potential, which is no mean feat! How can we make the most of progress? Take, for example, a person dedicated to improving their cardiovascular fitness. They will need to set themselves goals and a training programme. They will also need to track their progress over time in the form of a log, which will show an increase in stamina, quicker recovery time, increased speed, and so on. As they monitor their progress, they will need to ask some key questions: Am I on track? Have I had some setbacks? Do I need to amend my training programme? In the same way, a student’s attainment will be assessed by the teacher and themselves, by looking at their learning and assessment results. We can measure

progress when we join the dots between these key assessment points. This builds a picture of progress over time, which is to be celebrated as the achievement of goals becomes an achievable reality. As the student tracks their progress and notices small wins and recoveries from setbacks, their confidence will grow. Rather than focusing on the ups or downs of the moment, they can see, in the big picture, that their progress is not necessarily even, but gradually increasing over time. The opening quote by Michelangelo reminds us of the importance of the relationship between goal setting and progress. If we set our sights too low, then we will not make any great gains. If we set our sights high, we can achieve so much more even if we do not achieve the end goal. We grow and learn on the path towards the goal. The path is the progress, and every step forward on this path is to be celebrated.

hen I talk to students, parents and colleagues about the importance of you taking ownership of your digital footprint I often get asked the question “How do you remove content from a Google search?” The guidance on this website is a really good start. Particularly important is changing your digital landscape by removing sensitive information stored online. I highly recommend you add your name and contact information (and those of your children) to Google Alerts – that way you are notified of anything public mentioning those key terms (or email addresses) that a Google search has found. Leverage the power of Google to keep in control of what is left behind from your digital meanderings. We’ve finished all of the components of International Day 2017, right? No, it’s only just begun!
O
ur event this year saw a learning component - Flags and Facts; a vertical interaction via the Patana Postcard Project; 69 countries marched in the Parade of Nations; six performances at the Cultural Show and food from 33 countries sampled in the Food Tasting Hall. This community event came about through a great deal of collaboration that started at the end of the 2016/17 school year. Mr Matt Jones gave us some feedback from the Academic CPD Days, there were several discussions with Mr Penstone about interculturalism and global citizenship then the ideas started flowing. Mr Richard Smith, Mr Chris Ferne and Mr Matt Jones ran sessions during the Secondary student’s CAS for All week and our Post Boxes were built, the Postcard design started, a logo was created and thoughts about what International Day and Interculturalism really mean were discussed by students. A big shout out to the students who signed up for these inaugural sessions – you set the precedent for greater student involvement in International Day. Once the plan was in place, parents from all of the nations represented at Bangkok Patana came on board again and volunteered to organise each of their countries to march in the Parade, join the Food Tasting Hall or be part the Cultural Show. The Student Environmental Committee (SEC) reminded everyone to ‘stay green’ and once again awarded the greenest booth at the Food Tasting, won this year by Indonesia. Our student DJs had everyone pumped up at the start of the Parade, four Year 11 students coordinated the Cultural 4
Show and two senior students stepped up to MC the show. We also had a group of students put together a video of what students felt interculturalism means to them. The student Athletics Council even got involved by introducing the Primary Students to some quirky games one lunch hour. A very big thank you to all the parents, teachers, students and staff – every area of our community who volunteered to help with International Day and to everyone who participated in the event. International Day is organised by the PTG and the committee have been a great support through all aspects of the project. I would personally like to thank my amazing team Katharina Ayrle, Ulrike Salaw and Daina Shaw who have worked for many months to coordinate all the components of the event; we had a wonderful time working together and have learnt a great deal. To continue the momentum, we have a taskforce of students, parents and teachers who are reviewing this year’s event and planning for the next one. Please let us know your ideas on how we can build this event into an even more sustainable one by emailing ptgintlday@ patana.ac.th International Day is a fun and memorable part of the school calendar but we also want it to be something that makes people pause and reflect on what it means to be a global citizen throughout the year. Every day we can learn something new about another country, be understanding of someone’s culture and traditions, respect the differences of people in our community and celebrate the diversity we have. As a community we are truly empowered by our interculturalism!

“So…what did you do this Sunday?” Sundays: the pinnacle of relaxation. A well-deserved sleep-in for many of us, after late Saturday nights. What do you normally do? Snooze the alarms until 10? Sleep until midday? Eat cereal for lunch? believe that there’s something sacred to Sunday mornings, regardless of whether or not you attend a religious congregation: a small slice of quiet we can keep for ourselves, if only for a few extra hours; buried amongst the hectic schedules and gruelling work, the rigor we put ourselves through in order to achieve that ‘balanced life’. So it’s not often that you find people who are willing to wake up at 4:00am on a Sunday morning, let alone to go and run 10km, but that’s exactly what three of our teachers did! On 9th November, the UN hosted its annual AIDS run, and in the hope that we would be able to obtain a Silver Partnership with them at the event, Hand2Heart asked for members of our school community to help us by running the event. While we ultimately were not able to achieve the 20-person minimum, we would still like to wholeheartedly thank Mr Wright, Ms Sentilles and Mr Stuart for offering to participate on behalf of the school and Hand2Heart. We would also like to thank all the staff and students who sponsored Ms Sentilles and Mr Wright as well, for it was not necessary but Ms Sentilles graciously (and secretly!) organised it anyway - an act of generosity that is deeply appreciated. And finally…. As a club, we are currently investing in wardrobes for the Camillian Social Center, where 46 children and 23 patients suffering from HIV/AIDS are currently residing. The shoes, which the whole school generously donated recently, will be delivered soon to the children, just in time for Christmas, so on behalf of the entire club, I would like to extend another thank you to the Bangkok Patana Community for these gifts. Athena Intanate, President of Hand2Heart ast week, Amnesty had a successful bake sale, which not only raised awareness about our cause but also capital to support our campaign. Thank you to the team for giving your up lunch time to participate in this event.

Our ongoing ‘Write For Rights’ campaign is organised by Amnesty International. Last week, two member of Amnesty International Thailand visited our school and informed our members about the motto ‘Your words really can change lives‘. You can make a difference eitherby writing a supportive message to individuals who are incarcerated for practicing their rights or by writing to the government to protest against the injustice. We have some special postcards for you to fill in and you can collect one from Ms Puttock in the English area or see our members in the student lounge during the next few weeks. Aaksh Ranjan, 13M

T
his year’s Patana Marine Conservation Group (PMCG) overnight trip was as eventful as ever as our favourite Elvis impersonator made an appearance at dinner and we successfully achieved our underwater missions for this trip. Since 2012, we have been observing coral growth on our Bangkok Patana artificial reef and one of our proudest achievements was the addition of pink sea fans. Sadly, due to environmental issues (change of weather, current or too much algae) these sea fans have now died, but we hope that they will make an appearance again. Luckily the hard coal is thriving. Over the last three years we have started placing structures which have had a sea creature theme. In 2015, we added Timmy the Turtle. After his shell collapsed twice because the mesh was too thin, Timmy (who is now headless) is doing great and along with our nursery table is one of our main providers of coral. Last year, we added Opal the Octopus to our collection of subsurface structures only to find it in pieces on Saturday. After two restoration dives and lots of cable ties, we are happy to say that Opal is back on her feet, or six tentacles – does this make her a hexapus? This year, we had the addition of Marty the Manta. Marty is exciting in many ways as it expands the surface area for coral growth whilst the use of a new mesh could enhance coral growth and prevent the need of further restoration in the future. ABRSM Piano Competition 2017
W
e would like to congratulate Svari (Teya) Tejacharoenanan from Year 3 on her recent musical acomplishments. Teya participated in the Piano Live Competition held by the ABRSM UK, winning two prizes! Teya won the prestigious Best Compulsory Piece from 77 contestants as well as receiving a Special Award for her performance. Teya recently perfromed for her peers in the Key Stage 2 assembly where the audience was blown away by her performance! Well done Teya!

s part of our IB course we are required to do a CAS project involving one or more of the strands of CAS (Creativity, Action, Service). You may have seen us advertising for donations at the front of school labelled 'VIE donations'. Why you might ask? What is this all for? All donations will be taken to the Village Education Centre, a school in Ekkamai that supports students with both academic and mental special needs. Students from Bangkok Patana have worked with them in the past and they are a wonderful school. n Wednesday 6th December, we will be holding our annual Language Curriculum Workshop for Primary School parents. At this meeting, you will be given lots of information about the language options available, including details about the new MFL2 (second foreign language) which we are asking you and your children to choose for the start of Year 7. I do hope that you can come to this workshop to meet us and ask any questions, if you can’t please look out for the letter and form which your child will be bringing home at the end of next week. BCT AUDITIONS! All the world’s a stage! Next up with BCT: Shakespeare’s classic comedy, As You Like It, a play about finding safety and love.
