Giving Students Greater Responsibility is Critical for Success!

I recently spoke to a Thai Grandparent who has three grandchildren attending the school and she asked me why independence is in our mission statement which I thought was an excellent question. This is what I said to her… At Bangkok Patana we are encouraging children and young people to take greater responsibility for their own learning and, as they progress through school, for the choices that they make. In this process, we aim to help all of our students to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to our society. Education today involves more than just learning facts and figures. Students at Bangkok Patana School learn skills that they will need for adult life including how to learn, to set personal goals for themselves, to recognise and monitor their own progress, to identify their aims and ambitions, to develop independence and most important of all to have confidence in themselves as future Global Citizens. “The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.” Denis Waitley, Author and Motivational Speaker Important People in the Patana Family

A selection of very important people in our school organization who you may not know that well, but their impact on the school is enormous. This month we interviewed Khun Sompong our Financial Controller. Khun Sompong grew up in Trang province in Southern Thailand. He attended Wichianmatu High School in Trang and then went on to attend Prince of Songkla University (King’s Scholarship), Business Administration majoring in Accounting and a Master’s Degree (MBA), at Kasetsart University also majoring in Accounting. He has always liked dealing with numbers. He is married to Kultaree Penglum, who works for the Siam Cement Group. They have one son called Tete who is six-years old and studies at Satitpatana School. Khun Sompong has been working at Bangkok Patana School since January 2013 and prior to that, he spent 17 years in the automotive industry. Khun Sompong is very proud that he implemented a successful new accounts system for the School. He loves spending time with his family, going to the movies and Thai boxing. Global Citizenship

New Zealand has recently had a new government elected and for the very first time they have an MP (who is an Iranian refugee who came to New Zealand at the age of nine). Refugee MP Golriz Ghahrama who represents the Green party recently gave her maiden speech in parliament and it has gone viral on social media as her speech was so powerful and such a fine example of a Global Citizen. It is well worth a watch, click here. 2

Ploenchit Fair

Over 4000 people attended the 2017 Ploenchit Fair on Saturday 25th November. It was a stunning crisp morning when the Irish Guards played their tuneful bagpipes as the ribbon was cut right at 10:00am. This is a major Bangkok fundraising event which the school is very proud to host. The whole event went very smoothly and I observed many very happy families enjoying a fun community day with all funds going to well-deserving charity groups in Thailand. Special thanks to our many school teams who helped set up the whole fair infrastructure. Celebrating the Arts

There has been lots of amazing opportunities over the past month to observe our talented student artists whether it was visual or performing both in Primary and in Secondary. Year 13 Pre IB Art Exhibition - An incredible variety of art on display in the Exhibition Hall including paintings, photography and ceramics. One of my favourite pieces was an enormous portrait of a student’s mum in jeans, quite delightful. The art is on display for the rest of the term so well worth a look. Our Country’s Good - I had the privilege to watch the Senior play on both nights and thoroughly enjoyed the shows. Every cast member gave a polished performance as the play pulled on all of the emotions. Alec Bien, the Head of the Arts Faculty, summed it up beautifully when he stated, “It’s a wonderful play on so many levels and beautifully acted. Set, lighting, sound – all worked as it should – to support and enhance the story.” Congratulations to Director Alison Holmes, Assistant Director Hannah Davis and the entire tremendously talented cast, you made your Head of School immensely proud! Shrek Jr. - With a packed house on both afternoons, everyone loved this year’s Primary musical, based on the DreamWorks animation motion picture and the book by William Steig. There were fantastic character portrayals and delightful confident singing to tunes we all know and love. Congratulations to all involved in this quality Primary production. International Day

One of my favourite events in the school calendar is International Day. We had 69 nationalities being represented on this very special day as we celebrated diversity and global citizenship. A huge thank you to this year’s International Day Coordinator Katherine Johns and her amazing team of helpers. Katherine and her team have continued making some positive changes to this year’s event which included the community Postcard Project that were all proudly on display on the day. I also sampled the delicious cuisine in the International Food Hall with over 30 countries being represented. Many thanks to the PTG and all of our parent helpers who put a great deal of time and effort to plan this very special day at Bangkok Patana School. Christmas Assembly

Not to be missed! The final Friday of term in the Sports Hall starting at 8:00am. This is such a fun and exciting younger years themed assembly where each year we pose the question; “How is Santa going to arrive?” Last year Santa arrived in the Charlie and the Chocolate factory glass elevator that nobody predicted. This is one assembly that all the parents like to attend so make sure you get in early so you can get a good seat upstairs on the mezzanine floor of the Sports Hall and don’t forget to don your festive attire! And finally, I would like to wish all of our Bangkok Patana community a safe and enjoyable holiday season and a happy and successful 2018. I look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Monday 8th January as we start another exciting Term 2 together. Best wishes, Matt Mills, Head of School 08/12/2017

Thailand Friendly Design Expo Jim Thombs, IB Design and Technology Coordinator

O

n 1st December, 18 Year 13 IB Design and Technology (D+T) students displayed their Design Project work at the Thailand Friendly Design Expo at Impact Exhibition Centre. We were honoured to be invited by Khun Krisana Lalai, a Bangkok Patana parent and founder and organiser of the expo. The Expo is now into its second year and was set up to promote an awareness for designing products for people with specialist needs, be it people with disabilities, the elderly or people who are injured or ill, with an emphasis on “Access for All”. This year’s Expo featured manufacturers from all over the world displaying the very latest technologies. Several universities from Thailand also featured alongside many initiatives from Thai government departments. Bangkok Patana was the only school to take part. The work our students displayed at the Expo was the result of the project they have been carrying out with the Christian Home for the Blind (with Multiple Disabilities). The Expo was a fantastic experience for our students as they got to share their designs with the community they are designing for. During the day, the students worked in shifts inviting visitors into the booth to answer questions about their products and gaining feedback from potential clients. A highlight was a group of children from a blind school who tested the products and gave their opinions. Our student’s main objective was to conduct an evaluation and marketing exercise that forms an important part of their design project. Several of the university exhibitors visited the booth and complemented them on the incredibly high standard of their work. They were particularly impressed by the iterative process the students had followed to produce their final product so much so that the students were interviewed for national television. Bangkok Patana’s participation in the Expo was a result of a shift in focus for the scope of the Design Project. Over the past four years, the Design and Technology faculty has embarked on a programme based around ‘socially responsible design’. We wanted our students to engage more with the world around them and gain a greater awareness that good design is a powerful instrument of change. For us, Socially Responsible Design is about seeing the bigger picture: Not only working closely with the user to understand their needs but also taking into account environmental, social and financial factors. We want our students to be conscientious, empathetic global citizens. Our concept is to give the students a framework that offers a real world, design and manufacture experience combined with the opportunity to actually make a difference with a solution to a significant design problem.

4

Our working relationship with the Christian Home for the Blind (with Multiple Disabilities) came about through help provided by the Central Thailand Mission. All of our students were introduced to the amazing work carried out by the staff of the home. The nature of the work carried out by the home

and the impairments of the children who attend, created many challenges for our students. They were faced with having to think empathetically and compassionately during the whole process, finding ways to communicate effectively with children who were not only blind but also suffering with such disabilities as cerebral palsy and autism. In order to do this, the students initially spent a good amount of time at the home observing, taking photos and interviewing the staff in order to identify design problems, which they could realistically solve. From this research, they found numerous design problems ranging from specialist toothbrush holders to navigation systems. The design project is an integral part of the IB Design Technology programme and is worth 40% of the final grade. The iterative nature of the human-centred design has meant that the students have used our CAD/CAM facilities (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining) to prototype and test many versions of their designs in order to develop a product which exactly suits the needs of these very specialist users. It is this process which is important for the development of our students as inclusive designers and compassionate global citizens. We would like to thank Khun Kulvadee and the Foundation Board and the Marketing Department for supporting us with our “Thailand Friendly Design Expo” experience, something that we hope to participate in next year. Read on to hear what our students thought of the expo experience!

XIAN ERN TAN The expo was extremely interesting as I got to meet many different people who had different ideas. As a student and young designer, it was a great opportunity for us to be able to showcase our ideas to the general public and gain feedback. SRI HOLLEMA After the design process, we had the opportunity to present our final design at the Thailand Friendly Expo. During the Expo, I received positive and constructive feedback from

professional industrial designers and manufacturers. It was incredibly valuable and gave insight into the professional world of design, including the marketing aspect. HANDEL DALE GONZALES At the exhibition held within IMPACT Arena, we brought our final products from our DT project and put them up on a stall for people to see. This was a great opportunity to get feedback from our target market and also from experts in the field of designing. Furthermore, we also had a chance to look at other stalls and products and therefore managed to obtain, not only critical advice on our work, but also a lot of inspiration. WILL CHEN The exhibition is a great way for us students to study Design Technology differently. It allows us to interact with the general public while being an exhibitor and get feedback. As well as this, the exhibition also gives us an opportunity to experience the marketing side of Design Technology and how to deal with real life situations. NICOLAS PEHL Presenting my product at the expo was a good experience, and it was certainly beneficial to get comments about my product, and how it could be improved.

08/12/2017

JENNIFER OTA The experience gained from the Expo was beyond expectations. It allowed us to grow as design students by gaining practical knowledge in regards to marketing. Talking to people who are not only our target audience but also engaged in the design world, provided us with external opinions, which we would not have considered ourselves, to enhance our final product. WIRATTAWUT (MAX) BOONBANDANSOOK

Setting the end goal as a design exhibition really motivated me to dedicate my time both inside and outside of the Design and Technology classroom towards perfecting my product. In addition to that, as a Thai speaker, my translation skills were of great use during the day. That fueled me to understand our aim of the design project, as well as prepare a speech to interact with the general public. It was nerve racking at the booth because we were the only school there, so the bars were set quite high. However, it turned out that we were pretty successful with our product designs and had visitors coming into our booth throughout the day. KEVIN WUETHRICH The Thailand Friendly Design Expo proved to be a great place for designers across the whole country to showcase their products. As a IB student and designer, the Expo was a great way to gain inspiration and ideas in order to improve my product and to become more user focused. POOMKHUN (POOM) CHAYAVORAPRAPA The Friendly Design Expo was a great opportunity to show our efforts in our major project for IB Design Technology! Overall, I had an amazing experience chatting to many different groups of people about my project. Not only did I receive compliments but also gained valuable feedback to create the best possible product for children in the Christian Home for the Blind.

Operation New Smile

Donald Zhou, Year 13 peration Smile is one of Bangkok Patana’s largest and oldest charity groups. With about 30 members from multiple Year groups, Operation Smile aims to raise awareness and fund surgeries for children born with cleft deformities. Each year, we have an annual mission trip to a rural province where we are able to see the surgeries we fund. Operation Smile Thailand organises a coalition of volunteers, doctors and plastic surgeons to support the mission. The trip gives us a better understanding of our cause and helps us see first-hand the results of our funding. We are also fortunate enough to have question and answer sessions with the head doctors where we can find out more about cleft palates, the surgeries and even future career paths! On Tuesday 7th November, we departed from Don Mueang airport to travel to Mae Sot where we would spend three days on our annual Operation Smile trip. This year, Bangkok Patana’s Operation Smile funded four entire operations, and throughout the three days 120 operations were conducted, all free of charge to the patients. We started off the first day by bringing donated toys and gifts to the children’s ward and playing with the young patients. It was such a heartwarming experience to connect with children that were in such unfortunate positions, but they deserved so much admiration as they had gone through so much. Each child had incredible distinct personalities: some would shy away, quietly keeping to themselves in the corner, while others would come charging out screaming, throwing balls and blowing bubbles. An additional difficulty was that many children and parents were from rural provinces with their own dialect, some even from other countries. Thus, communication was difficult. There were a few translators, but even so, we were able to bond with the children, simply from smiling and playing. We were then invited into the operation rooms to witness first hand the surgeries we had funded. To our surprise, there weren’t solely surgeries for cleft palates. The doctors were working on tissue scars, webbed fingers, and even burns. It was amazing to see how these selfless doctors change the lives of the children and it was incredible to watch the transformations happen before our eyes to the patients we played with. They went into the operation room as marginalised members of society, then woke up to a new life. A life of beauty, confidence and acceptance.

P

roject Star is a CAT club, aimed at helping people with disabilities from all over Thailand. We also aimed to raise awareness of the false stigma regarding disabilities. Recently, on Saturday 25th November, children from the Camillian Home enjoyed a sunny afternoon at Ploenchit Fair hosted here at Bangkok Patana. With coupons in-hand, Project Star led the children around as they pointed eagerly at the games, gobbled up their lunch and fell about laughing with the clown. “You can’t help but smile when you see the excitement on their faces. They shouted their encouragement as they took part in the games. They cheered each other on and celebrated as a family when one of them had won a prize. We ended our day with an energetic act by the clowns. In a way, there are a lot of things we can learn from those with disabilities, like gratitude, optimism and acceptance.” Lara, Project Star Member “It was thought-provoking to see a large variety of people who, on paper had disabilities, but were still able to hold exciting conversations, or interact with me as I would with anyone else. I really enjoyed those fun moments with them. For the most part, I would not have noticed that they weren’t as able at all.” David, Project Star Member “While the children from Camillian Home visited, I enjoyed seeing how the children had fun and how they still were able to have fun with their friends. Through this, I have learnt that it does not matter about your birth or how you are raised. But, happiness can be found with those around you.” Mark, Project Star Member Fortunately, this visit is just one of many with Camillian Home. Keep an eye on the Daily Notices for upcoming visits if you are interested or visit our FireFly page here!

W

orld Children’s Day was celebrated in the Secondary School on the 20th November 2017. It is a day that celebrates the inalienable rights of being a child, as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. In keeping with a “childlike” theme, Project Star, RAP, Smile and WFP collaborated to host a colouring competition, where students could meditatively colour in prompts prepared by the respective clubs, all of which related to different causes. Smile Club members from the Primary School also participated. Winners were awarded prizes, and overall, the activity fulfilled its purpose – to allow students to celebrate and reflect upon the unique experience of being a child.

pectrum aims to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ youth and increase acceptance through education of gender, sexuality and social rights; this week on Tuesday and Wednesday, we held our campaign days. It was great to see lots of students turn up to the lounge where we played uplifting songs, distributed pride and ally stickers and organised some fun activities. The fact timeline outlined different facts and events relating to LGBTQ+ history. There were lots of good vibes on both days, with students and teachers asking questions about our club and LGBT+ topics in general; bringing their friends to take photos with colourful rainbow props and looking through the ‘closet’ we had set up with shirts that had facts stuck on them. By the end of Tuesday lunchtime, the black board was filled with encouraging messages such as ‘Love is love’ and ‘It will be okay.’ The second board was also filled with the names and hand outlines of members of our school community, showing their support and taking the pledge to accept LGBTQ+ and to be an ally not an enemy. It was a great event and we had many new members sign up. Nimrata Sachdev, Year 10

n Saturday 11th November, the STOP team along with Bangkok Patana teachers, students and lots of volunteers participated in the A21 Walk for Freedom. Over one hundred people, including members of the Thai Police (and Superman!) attended this event in order to raise awareness of human trafficking. We marched silently in single file from Lumphini Park to Central World, striving to abolish slavery with every step we took. It was a truly liberating experience to see so many people working together to make others more aware of the issue of human trafficking. Sakooltipaya (Koko) Lotharukpong, Year 12

Annie of the Antarctic Lianne (Annie) Waterston, Bangkok Patana Alumni (Teacher)

YOUR TIME IS PRECIOUS, OUR TIME IS PRECIOUS: WE HAVE JUST TWENTY-FOUR YEARS TO SECURE THE FUTURE OF ANTARCTICA. LET’S SEE HOW WE CAN WORK TOGETHER FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THIS LAST GREAT WILDERNESS… WHO AND WHEN? Hi everyone! It’s Miss Annie here, last year when Robert Swan visited Bangkok Patana, I was so inspired by his dedication and passion. His message “The greatest threat to our planet is our belief that someone else will save it.” really instilled in me a need to take action NOW and I decided right then and there that I wanted to be part of the solution. It was the first time in a long time that I had felt so alive about something after spending months in a wheelchair and on crutches due to breaking my leg badly at a trampoline park. This opportunity felt like a real chance to heal myself and the planet as the challenge of getting my leg strong enough to withstand glacier climbs in Antarctica was a big one!

My passion and dedication have allowed me to be chosen to join British explorer Rob Swan and his team on the 2018 expedition to ANTARCTICA. So, in February, just like Miss Thew and Rebecca did in March, I am flipping my teaching role to become a student again. I am going on a journey south…really far south. In fact, pretty much as far south as it gets.

12

WHY AM I DOING THIS? Many of you will know from everything we learnt along with Ms Thew and Rebecca this year that the treaty protecting Antarctica from development and resource exploitation, keeping it open for scientific observation and investigation is up for renewal in 2041. If this treaty is not renewed, it will result in a massive increase in human and industrial activity that will destroy the earth’s last natural wilderness, Antarctica.

WHAT? My role as a Climate Force Ambassador and an integral part of this Antarctic Climate Force expedition is to learn from experts about the history of Antarctica, glaciology, renewable energy and climate science. During the trip, I will gain valuable leadership skills and spend time collaborating with others to develop resources on sustainability education. We will also hear first-hand from Rob and his son Barney on how effective the renewable energies were from the South Pole Energy

Bangkok Patana School News

08/12/2017

Challenge that they are currently undertaking. I will then pass these actionable solutions to students and teachers to empower them to take further action to combat climate change. Did you know that you too could be a Climate Force Ambassador? Click here to find out more. As a Physical Education teacher, one of my goals is to create a set of action games and lesson plans for schools focused on climate change and sustainability. These digital resources will be aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and will be available for educators around the world. Can

you imagine the positive impact this will have on our students and our planet? So, please join me and countless other individuals and organisations around the world who are taking responsibility for the future of Antarctica and for our planet. I hope that my story inspires you to take a small step today but if you would like more information about my journey and what it takes to get me to Antarctica, click here.

A

s I sit here in Bangkok enjoying the beautiful plus 30°C my mind turns to the experience that Robert Swan and his son, Barney are having right now during the #SouthPoleEnergyChallenge! Rob and his team are attempting to be the first expedition team to reach the South Pole using only renewable energy. On Tuesday of this week, Day 12 of their expedition, Robert reported that “the weather let up just a bit yesterday, and the team could see the blue sky for the first time in a few days. However, they still had to battle 45 knot wind guts and temperatures as low as minus 30°C. When it’s this cold, it’s important to have technology that works and heats you up. The snow melter designed by NASA, allows the team to have drinking water every day, and the advanced bio-fuels from Shell ensure that they can cook and dry off their clothes every night.” Both Rebecca Leiler and myself found Robert Swan to be truly inspirational when we joined his expedition 2041 to Antarctica last March. I am really thrilled to know that Annie Waterston will be joining the same trip next year to continue Bangkok Patana’s connection to Robert Swan and 2041 and I am sure Robert will have a tale or two to share about the South Pole Energy Challenge with Annie when she next meets him. Good luck Annie! Helen Thew Assistant Principal Student Welfare and Bangkok Patana 2041 Expedition Member

#77 Facebook Messenger for Kids?

P

erhaps in an effort to capture the whole world market for social media, Facebook have recently launched a new app called Messenger Kids. Okay, so I may be a little cynical about social media apps for under 13s, but I’m also a realist and, as such, I do think that something like this could be a good bridging tool to help develop healthy digital relationships before our children explore apps that are targeted at teens and adults. This notion is explored really well in a blog post by Anne Collier. I’ve listed below some of the key safety features Facebook have adopted within the app: 1. Parents do the set-up and approve everyone on a child’s contact list, and this works both ways: the parents of the child being added to your child’s Contacts approve your child as well. 2. There are no ads, no in-app purchases and no sharing of kids’ data with other apps on their devices. 3. Messenger Kids has its own specialised kid content moderation team. 4. The app will, in effect, teach children how to report harassment and inappropriate content by giving them popup feedback, and – through their own Facebook Messenger accounts – it keeps parents informed of how that’s going. 5. Parents get notifications of their child’s activity, including when children report problems, within their (the parents’) Facebook accounts. 6. Content doesn’t go away and can’t be deleted, so parents can check their children’s devices to find out what’s going on. 7. App time, bedtime and other controls will be tested with users and likely added as the product rolls out. Athlete of the Week! ATHLETE: JEVIN TUTOR GROUP: 13G SPORT: VOLLEYBALL TEAM ROLE: LIBERO AND CAPTAIN

“Play Smart” 1)WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE VOLLEY ROUTINE/HABIT? Definitely taping my fingers as well as the bottom of my knee pads before the game. 2) WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PRE GAME SONG? Unlike other players, I actually prefer not listening to any music before games. I prefer a quiet time with myself as it helps me get in the zone. 3) WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PRE-GAME STRETCH? Neck! I think it’s really important for me to stretch my neck before games. Especially with my position where I'm required to be as low as possible. Constantly looking up when covering, or even just going through long rallies can really be annoying if I haven’t stretched my neck properly. 4) WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL TO HAVE AFTER GAMES? I don’t know about after games, but before games a pre-workout meal is a must. 5) ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO THE CAPTAINS OF SEASON 2 TEAMS? No season is going to run smoothly, there’s always going to be ups and downs. As the team captain, it’s important to remind the team of your end goal. No matter how bad a situation gets, let your players know that they have to believe in themselves and most of all each other. Playing a game for yourself and playing for your teammates are two different things. The moment you are playing every possession with all your heart not only for yourself but also your coaches and teammates...
