An Update on ECAs Cindy Adair, Assistant Principal Extra-curricular Activities and Sport

W

ow! What a start to the year we’ve had in the world of ECAs and Sports. Following a successful review in 2016/17 we have launched several new services and features to our programmes which are being very well received by students and parents alike. Here are some highlights: New Communications Strategies We have had great feedback about our new ECA and Seasonal Sports magnets. This handy magnet will help you keep on top of the various sign-up and trials deadlines throughout the year. We hope you’ve got yours on your fridge at home! We also had lots of support for our new ECA Help Desk service offered during the ECA sign-up window at the PTG room. Lots of parents came along to be guided through the ECA sign-up system for the first time or solve login issues. Our fantastic new Dance Centre Students and teachers alike where very excited to start using our new Dance Centre earlier this month. Featuring seven studios with a range of dance flooring, full mirrors and barres. This dynamic learning space is sure to inspire some brilliant performances. Over 500 students take Dance ECAs each week, so this facility will be well utilised for Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary and Thai Dance.

3:30pm ECAs This year has seen us develop a second session of ECAs to offer more opportunities to our students. Students in Year 3 and above can now “stack” ECAs if they have multiple interests. Please do be sure to monitor your child’s overall wellbeing, sometimes less is more when it comes to after school activities. 2

A broader range of Academic Enrichment Opportunities During the ECA review we got the message loud and clear that our community really value the opportunity for students to apply their academic knowledge acquired via the curriculum in real life situations. This year we have expanded our offerings in this area to include exciting new ECAs such as Mini Business Club, Chemistry Olympiad, Mathemagic and Student Magazine. Increased Emphasis on STEM We now have a whopping 19 ECAs across the school focused on providing STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) for all ages. These include Robotics, Claymation, Programming, Coding and the hugely popular Minecraft Team Challenge.

A New Approach to Primary Sports ECAs The new ECA timings has been a catalyst to look at the way we deliver our large mass participation Primary sports like Football and Basketball. The Primary PE team are now offering an hour of purely skills based training to lay a solid foundation for the future and then an hour of game-based tactical play focused on teamwork and combinations ready for matches. Students who want to simply learn the game and enjoy themselves with friends can attend the first hour, those who want to pursue a position in the school teams can attend both. In short, the ECA programme is flourishing! There are always areas we are striving to improve and we look forward to sharing these with you in the future as we continue to implement the recommendations from the ECA review in 2016/17. 14/09/2017

A New Building in the Outdoor Classroom Alexander (Coke) Smith, Environmental Systems and Societies Coordinator, Biology Teacher

B

angkok Patana School has recently approved the construction of a new building at our amazing Outdoor Classroom. However, it is not just any building. The new building will be built using sustainable materials and techniques but this is not the only thing that makes this building unique. What makes this building really stand out is that our students are designing it! Mr Smith’s Year 13 Environmental Systems and Societies students are designing the structure and compiling the lists of sustainable materials to be used to make features such as walls, doors, windows, roofs and the furnishings. In these images, you can see students designing floor plans and building features. Students were put into teams and each pitched their designs and recommended sustainable materials. The final design will be decided in the coming days, but by this time next year, Bangkok Patana will be home to a new sustainable building at our Outdoor Classroom and our students will have had the opportunity to put into practice what they have learned in class.

#68 Digital Hygiene

How often do you clean your teeth, wash your face or wash your hands? Now think about how often you clean your browser…. It always surprises me how little attention we pay to the ‘digital cleanliness’ of the environments in which we spend many hours. Every time you visit a webpage your digital detritus is left on your device, like crumbs after a meal. You can see why they often refer to those little bits of data as cookies. To keep your device as ‘clean’ and efficient as possible we recommend you clear the history and cache of your browser (including your phone) at least once a month. My favourite free piece of software to do this is called CCleaner. Alternatively you could simple do this yourself, depending on what browser you use. Click on the links below to find out more: CCleaner: https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download Clear your history: https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000510.htm (image courtesy of https://www.computerhope.com/)

Global Citizenship in World Languages Tania Leyland, Community Services Coordinator

A

s part of their French B course, Year 13 students have completed an interactive oral on a topic of their choice linked to Global Issues. They had to reflect and discuss their role and responsibilities as global citizens as well as explain to their classmates why this topic is important to them. Nuclear is energy has its benefits, with it being more efficient than fossil fuels, and it does not emit green-

house gases. On the other hand, there are dangers that should not be ignored. The big problem is that the nuclear plants throw away their nuclear waste in the oceans. The waste irradiate the water, and make it radioactive. This radioactivity accumulate in our bodies and can be a cause of numerous health complications. We must consider if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Are we willing to take these risks and live a life of chance, or are we going to find a solution to manage nuclear waste safely? I chose the topic of nuclear waste for my interactive oral, as where the enhanced greenhouse effect caused by use of fossil fuels was a well known consensus, the improper disposal of nuclear waste was less known. With the pressure on governments to decrease the use of fossil fuels, they are turning to nuclear plants as its substitute. However with nuclear energy being developed in a rush in WW2 for the production of weapons, the proper methods and sites for safe disposal of the waste have not yet been found. Radiation, although invisible can have detrimental effects on our health and the environment. Without proper treatment, just one accident can contaminate a large area for centuries, as

This French presentation links to various subjects in the IB course, starting from physics where I learned about the fission process of uranium produces energy in nuclear plants to biology, where the exposure to radiation can result in mutations in the replication of the cells leading to a change in the DNA sequence. This topic further connects to multiple IB learner profiles, as it stresses the importance of being caring global citizens. Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD) Helen Thew, Assistant Principal Student Welfare We are pleased to announce that two trainers from the Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD) organisation will return to Bangkok Patana from Tuesday 3rd October – Friday 6th October. Ms Sarah Burrill and Mr Ian Barney will be working mainly with Year 9 students, meeting with them every day, but will also give presentations to Years 8, 11, 12 and 13. FCD is a non-profit organisation that provides substance abuse prevention education for schools. Since 1976, they have taught over a million students of all ages. Their mission is to: • Encourage and support the non-use of alcohol and other illegal or illicit drugs during the growing years • Empower young people to make healthy, responsible choices regarding alcohol and other drug use • Teach students and adults how to recognise the early warning signs of substance abuse and to intervene appropriately • Educate students, parents, teachers, and administrators on the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol and other drugs • Promote awareness of drug addiction, including alcoholism, as a progressive, chronic, and often fatal disease • Provide educational communities with the guidance and training necessary to implement comprehensive, effective approaches to substance abuse prevention The partnership between Bangkok Patana and parents has always been a vital and crucial element in the pastoral care we provide. To this end an FCD session will be offered to all parents to meet and discuss common concerns about substance abuse prevention for their children in Bangkok. Some of the topics to be addressed include: • Effective ways to communicate with your child about drugs and drug use • Up-to-date facts about current drug use and trends • What to say about your own experiences with alcohol and/or drug experimentation • How to spot early warning signs of trouble and effective ways to respond This meeting will take place on Thursday 5th October at 4:00pm in the Conference Centre. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to meet with the FCD educators and to hear their stories.

Match Report O

n Monday the Junior Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team won their first match of the season with a strong 3-0 set. Everyone has been working very hard on improving their skills over the past few weeks and the game saw some good sets, digs and spikes against NIST. The first set went by rather smoothly, but as the second set came, it was evident that the team was starting to lose some energy, resulting in a few mistakes. However, after a short break, everyone was remotivated to win and the rest of the game went by smoothly. It was delightful to see many parents and students supporting us on the side. Cream Natchaya Ramanat, 12C

Transport Corner Weekly news from the Transport Department Collection by an adult Foundation Stage/Year 1/Year 2 children must be collected by a trusted adult when they arrive home by bus. The adult must come outside and be clearly seen by the Bus Monitor, it is not sufficient to signal from a balcony or window. Role of the Bus Monitor • The main role of a Bus Monitor is to oversee the safety and speed of the driver. The Bus Monitors ensure that all students wear their seat belts for the duration of the journey and do not stand up and move around the bus. • They report any concerns, including behaviour problems, to the Transport Office, either during the course of the journey if a safety concern, or once they return to school. Any behaviour reports are then followed up by academic staff. • In case of an accident, emergency or unscheduled stop, the Bus Monitor will immediately telephone the Transport Office. • Our Bus Monitors provide a good level of care for our students, but it is not their role to help feed a child or carry out other requests such as plaiting or combing hair, returning library books or carrying school bags or other items. Taking and posting images No student, driver or Bus Monitor should be taking photographs/video clips of others whilst on school transport. Items left on buses The amount of items left on the school bus is increasing. Please help by reminding your child to ensure they check the bus area around them before getting off the bus to make sure they have all of their belongings with them.
