October Already! Term 1 is already flying by as we head towards Secondary Residential Visits and Primary 3-Way Conferences. Our Bangkok Patana students are working extremely hard at their academic studies and are fully involved with a wide array of stimulating ECAs. We are delighted with the new specialist ECA rooms upstairs in the Year 5/6 building where the students are really enjoying having a variety of Dance Studios to practice and perform in. Congratulations to our Cross Campus Principal James Penstone who has been appointed Secondary Principal at the Inter-Community School of Zurich, Switzerland starting in August 2018. We are thrilled for James and hope he and his lovely family enjoy their time in Switzerland. The selection committee has short-listed some very strong candidates for our Cross Campus Principal vacancy and will be interviewing prospective candidates here at school on 16th and 17th October. I attended the annual PTG Big Night Out last Friday evening and what a fun night it was. This year the PTG sold tickets and completely sold out the Bangkok Patana community event. The Park Hyatt was a wonderful venue and I really enjoyed my discussions with our supportive Patana Parents. Congratulations and thank you to our new PTG Chair Melissa Golden and her incredible PTG team. The Royal Cremation Ceremony of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej This month, the people of Thailand will commemorate the solemn activities surrounding the Royal Cremation Ceremony of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Here are some important dates during the month: • 13th October is a new public holiday in remembrance of the benevolence of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. This will take place every year from now onwards. • The Royal Cremation Ceremony will take place from 25th to 29th October 2017. • The actual date for the Royal Cremation will take place on Thursday 26th October. • 26th October has been declared a public holiday so that people can attend the Royal Cremation Ceremony • The mourning period will officially end on 29th October. On the 30th, people should no longer wear black and all symbols of mourning should be removed. • Activities during the month of October are expected to be conservative and some regular activities may be cancelled. Please note that the main dates surrounding the Royal Cremation Ceremony take place during our half term break. Please be sensitive to the mood of the people around you who may be very sad and also be aware that some services and transportation may be affected. Here is an excellent Bangkok Post resource on all of the events. 2

Taken from original communication from Dr Surapee Sorajjakool (Gai), Head of Thai Programme Important People in the Bangkok Patana Family A new addition to my Monthly Blog will include a selection of very important people in our school organisation who you may not know that well but whose impact on the school is enormous. This month I am starting with Rachel Jones, our Head of Admissions who has been with us for nine years. Rachel is from the UK and has called Bangkok home for the last 13 years. She has a passion for languages and literature and has studied Latin, Greek, French, German, Spanish and Italian. She gained an MA in Italian and English literature at Edinburgh University and later went on to qualify as a teacher. Rachel caught the travel bug at a young age and has travelled extensively, including longer periods spent studying in Italy and volunteering in India. She continues to enjoy exploring and learning about different cultures and places, and values the opportunities that living in Bangkok presents to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Rachel believes that experiencing other cultures through language, travel, literature and the arts, plays a key role in developing global citizenship. She has two children in the Primary School here at Bangkok Patana and is delighted at the way they are developing. She recently told me that her four year old had asked to go to Russia for the weekend “because I’ve never been there mummy and I would like to learn more about it”…apparently, on this occasion they visited the library instead! Fun Run 2017, Celebrating our Community It was great to see so many of you at our annual Fun Run on Sunday 24th September, which is such an enjoyable and worthwhile school community event. The rain stayed away and the Ancient City is such a tranquil location to take an early morning run in. We had well over 1000 runners, which is a new record for the school. Special thanks to key organisers Khun Pa and Khun Keaw, Cindy Adair, Cheryl Rego, Rebecca Meadows, Khun Patama, Melissa Golden and her PTG team and all of the behind the scenes support crew including loads of our students and teachers. Unravelling PISA PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) studies have been conducted since 1997, their main objective to compare education attainment across the world using detailed data analysis, surveys and benchmarking. This article looks at the impact a motivated student mind-set has on academic attainment which I found fascinating and wanted to share it with you. As a school, we have been focusing on the importance of growth mind-sets for a number of years now. IB vs A Level The pre-tertiary debate continues and I thought this current article written by a Director of Studies at a reputable IB private school in the UK was pertinent and on the mark. I hope you find the article useful. Parents Corner A fascinating article by Doctor Wayne Dyer on the importance of positive adult role modelling. He shares strategies to help support our children through the challenges of life. I do hope our Bangkok Patana families have a relaxing end enjoyable mid-term break. Best wishes, Matt Mills Head of School 12/10/2017

Bangkok International Choral Festival 2017 Acksharaa Balaji and Joshua Martin, Year 13
O
n 6th and 7th October, 75 students from across the Secondary school, participated in the Bangkok International Choral Festival 2017. BICF was a great experience for us as we enjoyed working with students from other schools. Even within our individual sections, we got to work with singers that had different vocal skills and this made the experience even more enriching.
“BICF 2017 was fantastic and we will really miss having this opportunity once we graduate next year.” As part of BICF, we got to sing with Key Stage 3 singers. Singing in a mass choir of over 300 people is an experience that stays with you. We have attended BICF every year that we have been members of Senior Choir. The conductors we got to work with were inspiring; they brought new ideas and different ways of achieving musical communication in our singing. BICF 2017 was fantastic and we will really miss having this opportunity once we graduate next year. 4

#72 The STEM Laboratory
I
’ve mentioned the Stem Laboratory site before and to be honest it’s quickly becoming one of my favourites. We often we carry recyclable materials to school after a request for boxes and containers. However, this weekend the inside of the toilet rolls are staying right at home for the construction of a Hot Wheels vertical race track at the Taylor residence. I’m going to supplement the activity by making some giant protractors from cardboard and drawing prediction parabolas on the wall with chalk (it easily washes off). I’m thinking it would be great to video in slo-mo too; I’ll post the results and let you know who wins! Looking forward to seeing you at the Parenting in a Digital World (E-safety Training for Parents) presentation on Monday 16th October 8.00am in the Primary Hall. Have a playful long weekend. S
teph from A21 visited Bangkok Patana and gave a fantastic talk to the STOP Community Action Team. A21 are a global action group formed to raise awareness of, and work with, the victims of human trafficking. They are very keen to develop collaborative partnerships with students and were impressed by the enthusiasm of STOP. Within Thailand, A21 are developing a number of strategies aimed at increasing awareness of human trafficking and informing people about the support is available. Thailand’s first event is the Walk For Freedom which takes place on November 11th. The silent walk from Lumpini Park to Siam Square has official government backing and very positive support from the Royal Thai Police. STOP students are really excited to be involved. Look out for A21 t-shirts on sale soon! The other campaign is ‘Can You See Me?’ a hard hitting visual campaign, endorsed by Thailand Transport Department and the Prime Ministers Office. Awareness videos are going to be shown in airports, trains stations, bus depots and throughout the MRT over the next few months. STOP students will be using the films in Senior assemblies over the coming weeks to help raise awareness as we move into the holiday season. The main focus is promoting the 1300 telephone number for people to report anything suspicious. You can watch one of the campaign videos here https://youtu. be/DELqLm1xFD0 To find out more about the direct action that STOP students are involved in, please visit their FireFly page by following this link http://community.patana.ac.th/student-committees/community-action-teams-cat/stop

or World’s Mental Health Day, the LETS board and club members sold baked goods to Bangkok Patana students while informing them about different mental health conditions. The club member’s also created a range of posters sharing mental health information. We also asked everyone at the event to participate in three Kahoot games designed to help raise awareness of mental illness and educate students how to seek support and take positive action; the winner of each Kahoot won a prize! The event was very successful with many club members helping and many other students interested in our cause and joining in with the Kahoot. Panyapat (Fame) Benjasiriwan

n October 7th INTERACT club delivered a creative art orientated workshop for the children of the Mercy Center. In this activity, the children used their hand prints to make animals and plants, whilst other children used their fingers to make portraits of their friends or some of their favorite places. What worked well with this activity was that it was relatively easy to set up and the children seemed to have a lot of fun. Their smiles and their eagerness to create exotic designs was extremely rewarding for Interact members as it showed that their hard work put into the planning of the workshop paid off. It is for this reason that both the children and our members left with big smiles on their faces. We look forward to delivering our next art workshop to them next month! This was a fantastic, fun activity that has a wide range of learning benefits: • Painting can help children communicate their emotions or feelings. Through the use of different colors, they can express themselves without the need for words. • Painting helps children acquire hand-eye coordination. This is developed while they learn to paint the parts that they see; making sure their hand movement is at par with their vision.
Responding to Global Issues
A
group of Year 9 students wanted to do something to raise awareness of the 50,000 refugees displaced by the impending Mt Agung eruption in Bali. They held a craft activity in the lounge, decorating face masks and used the opportunity to tell people about the issue. We would like to thank Pacific Dental Care: http://www.pacificdentalbangkok.com/ for donating the 200 surgical masks. The students have requested a meeting with the Emergency Response Committee where they intend to present a proposal for the purchase of 1000 N95 respirator masks. These will be shipped to the relief workers in east Bali for distribution to the elderly and small children who are most at risk from the ash cloud. Good luck to all our Habitat for humainty builders who are in korat building a house for a family over the half term!

Under 15 Girls’ Touch vs Shrewsbury Maddie Dewse , Year 10
W
HOOOOO!!I am so proud of my girls! This week we played against Shrewsbury. Our methods and attacking tactics have been improving week on week; this week we were amazing! We were running angles, touching accurately, communicating better and most importantly really becoming a team. Shrewsbury School did win 2-0, however, in the friendly match we scored three beating their zero. Although the scores from the friendly don’t officially count, we made them count in our minds and the feeling was exciting and thrilling. I am sure we will win the next game; I have such confidence in our team - we will do it!

Junior Varsity Boys’ Football vs Shrewsbury Shivraj Pawa , Year 13
T
he JV Boy’s first home game on 4th October got off to a good start after a great run down the wing by Matyas and a cross led to a goal by Illay within the first few minutes. More running by Matyas and Illay led to two more goals in quick succession. Shrewsbury didn’t pose much of a threat and only had a few good chances going forward, having lost their goalkeeper to injury in the warm up. Kay made some great saves from Shrewsbury’s efforts and was welcomed back into the team after missing the game against ISB. They struggled to deal with Bangkok Patana’s quick movement and passing. Matyas also added to the score sheet whilst Jack managed to score an amazing goal directly from a corner to make it 5-0 in the first half. The second half was more of the same, after the coach brought on several new players. Shrewsbury stepped up their game but still struggled to create chances. We continued to keep the pressure high and scored twice more through Will and Kenji, bringing the final score of the game to 7-0. In the friendly 10 minutes, the coach experimented with trying players in new positions. Bangkok Patana showed their class again and scored one more, including a long-range goal from Shivraj. Transport Corner Weekly news from the Transport Department Primary 3-way conferences All students in Year 1-6 will be put on their default bus 2:30pm on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th October due to the 3-Way Conferences.
