s you read this, I am on my way, or have just arrived back from the Year 4 Residential Visit to Kanchanaburi. At the same time, there are a number of classes in Year 3 to 6 returning from their Residential Visits. These trips have taken our students to various parts of Thailand including Pattaya, Kanchanaburi, Khao Yai and Chanthaburi. The Residential Visits are more than just a trip though - they are an experience. The skills learnt, the relationships developed and the growth in independence are all valuable outcomes of the Residential experience. During the Residential Visits the students get to:  Challenge themselves by trying things that may be out of their usual comfort zone  Get to know students within their Year group with whom they may not usually learn and play  See their teachers as ‘real people’  Build their confidence and problem-solving skills as they deal with real-life situations and scenarios  Develop their independence through taking on the responsibility for their daily routines and personal belongings At Bangkok Patana School we believe that learning takes place everywhere, all of the time. This includes in the classroom, on the playground, on the bus, on the sporting field, as well as in

the canteen. We are always developing our social and emotional intelligence, as well our academic and physical skills. The Residential ‘experience’ allows students to take these skills and apply them in a new and often unfamiliar context, giving them the opportunity to try them out ‘for real’. I am really looking forward to catching up with our returning students and hearing all about their wonderful adventures, the challenges they faced and how they overcame them. For the students who are departing next week, we wish you a wonderful Residential experience and hope you make the most of this amazing opportunity. I hope you have a very enjoyable weekend. ear 9 student Rarinsri (Pin) Assakul has shown vocal ability since the tender age of seven. She has performed twice in front of hundreds of spectators with the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra (RBSO) in its annual Winter Concert in the Park Series. Her first appearance was in 2013/14 at the age of 11, where Pin performed “On My Own” and then for a second time a year ago, singing “Part of Your World”. She participated in the school production of Peter Pan Junior in 2014 taking the role of Tiger Lily. Her major break came in 2015 when was chosen from 200 other auditioning vocalists to play the role of Brigitta von Trapp in the National Production of the Thai version of the Sound of Music, which was staged in April 2015 at Ratchadalai Theatre to great critical acclaim. As well as all this, Pin has also passed Grade 3 Singing Exam of the Trinity Examination with the 2nd highest score in Thailand. Late last year, Pin was invited to perform at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York City after being chosen as one among the First Prize Winners in the American Protégé Vocal Competition 2016. She performed “As Long As He Needs Me” from the musical Oliver! Pin continues to showcase her vocal talents and is looking forward to performing for the third time at the final concert of RBSO’s Concert in the Park Winter Series on Sunday February 26th as well as a variety of upcoming Bangkok Patana concerts. Well done for all these amazing achievements Pin!

The amazing Amnesty team raised 9,000 THB selling some fantastic cakes and baked goods on Tuesday. Thank you for your support. Amnesty are working on raising awareness of the plight of refugees in Thailand, many of whom survive on donations and goodwill. Amnesty BPS are hoping to have a more hands on sustainable impact in this area and the funds raised will help them with their project. I am pleased to announce that Youth Club has a new leader. Kellen Frye in Year 7 has been appointed to lead the Youth Club committee. He is currently putting together a team and will be telling you more about it in the weeks to come. If you have any comments, ideas or contributions for Kellen or are interested in helping him in his role, please send me an e-mail and I will pass it on to him. Lakshya Goyal - President Playing 4 Change gives us this report: On December 3rd, Playing for Change (PFC) a CAT club which aims to support and connect people through music, hosted the Khlong Toey Music Program (KTMP) at our school. I have been a member of playing for change for three years but this is my first time meeting the children I have helped in the last few years. Being an enthusiastic member of PFC, first and foremost I had the most wonderful hands-on direct experience playing with the children. Immediately, their energy, enthusiasm and elation enthralled me. After pouring wholehearted efforts into the past few years in bake sales, CAT fairs, campaign days and a plethora of other fundraisers, the sensation of seeing what we worked for had finally been realised. Saturday morning, our drowsy eyes and dim vibes were enlightened by this group of children from the KTMP. Off to the music room we went! Firstly we began by exchanging names and greetings then proceeded to play games such as duck-duck-goose, musical chairs and musical statues. Oh how it brought back the sensation of childhood, some of which were being fulfilled right there by the hearts of PFC members. These games crushed the awkwardness and nerve filling the initial atmosphere of the music room. We were absolutely blessed to hear the children truly ‘playing for change’ as they elaborated upon some songs they were taught. What a marvelous surprise! That day there was no segregation of Khlong Toey Music Program and PFC members from Bangkok Patana; we were one united family. To promote the ideals of inclusivity as our CAT club aims to do, we split into smaller, specialised groups to teach the KTMP students a new piece of music. The harmonious recollections of piano, guitar, drums, percussion and song could be heard as we parted ways.

efore we started the game, Mr Reid told us that he wanted to treat this game as if it was a BISAC match to which everybody agreed and proceeded to play their best. Shrewsbury arrived late and since they were the away team took kick off resulting in a fast start to the game. Even though they started, we also started with strength and speed. The Tigers instantly started to press the opposition with determination to win possession. Eventually,

the back of the net. After endless amounts of attempts on target, the ball finally reached its destination giving us a 4-0 lead. The league match ended 4-0 and another victory for Bangkok Patana. We shook hands and thanked the Shrewsbury players. To our surprise, we were to play an extra third, even though it was a friendly. When we started the extra third, Shrewsbury scored an early goal. We were not very happy about

we managed to win the ball and started to attack; our opponents hardly got the ball. Our first goal was scored, a few minutes into the game, with a good push up of Janelle on midfield and a timely assist to Anna for our first goal. A small wave of relaxation washed upon us. Not long after that, another goal came along giving us a huge boost of confidence leaving us 2-0 up at the end of the first half. As the second half began, we knew that Shrewsbury would give us an even harder challenge. However, the fact that they were as hungry for the win as we were only gave us more drive to be the better team on the field. Substitutions were made to make sure everyone had an equal time of rest and playing time. Almost seven minutes in, a corner was awarded to the Tigers, which led to our next goal, a wonderful tap in by Marlene. By now, we had a comfortable margin between us and them. However, even though we were leading, we still tried to play smart and knock the ball into

this, but we all kept our heads up determined to continue attacking until we equalised. Numerous attacks were displayed on the pitch; however, the ball could not quite find its way to the goal. We persisted and regained possession. Finally, the ball was there at the correct time and space for Janelle to shoot the equaliser! Everyone was happy that we achieved the draw. Soon after that, the extra game was declared over by the referee. This was our sixth win of the season. Once again the Tigers have demonstrated solid defense, good passing and open positions leading to numerous goal attempts. We are proud of the great teamwork, good communication and active listening to our coaches and we would like to thank them for the encouragement and expertise. This season has given the team a lot of great memories and skills to develop in the future.

SB delivered a very physical and competitive match against the home Tiger side, opting to use their forward momentum to try and break through the defensive line. ISB scored an early try but the Bangkok Patana side quickly recuperated and scored three tries over the course of the league match through Michael Nunbhkadi, Oscar Matijasevich and Teddy Boonbandansook. Tan Sripai successfully converted all three tries. The final score was a 21-5 victory to the home side. A resulting friendly ten-minute third was played in which both sides scored two tries but neither were successfully converted. Nicholas Landi, 13A

ver the weekend, Bangkok Patana Gymnastics Team put forward 83 gymnasts to compete at FOBISIA GYMNASTICS 2017, one of the most competitive events on the calendar with 11 international schools competing over the weekend. The boys set the standard by placing in the Team Overall awards in all the levels. Strong performances from both Philip Duckworth and Xavier Arkotxa-Lakha who both placed 2nd Overall in Levels 1 and 2. Special mention goes to Rishi Seshadri who also had a strong performance and showed great teamwork throughout the entire competition. Max Thompson showed great leadership when he rallied the Level 4 team together and just missed the Team 1st place by a whisker when it came down to the last apparatus!

The girls also placed very high with a consistently strong performance wining many Team Overall podium spots. WAG Level 3 Girls were able to secure 1st place Team Overall. We saw strong performances from Rachel Manda placing 2nd for Individual Overall, Emily Cannon 1st place Individual Overall,

Jennifer Greenbank 3rd place individual Overall, Paengrum Chatchupong 2nd place Individual Overall and Password 1st place Individual Overall. Password also did an amazing “triple twist” on the floor to secure a 1st on the floor apparatus.

For the senior gymnasts, the sportsmanship between all the gymnasts was exemplary. The gymnasts from all the competing schools all cheered each other on and supported one another. Even when there were tears, the gymnasts from competing schools consoled each other. The Bangkok Patana gymnasts were great ambassadors of our school.
