Putting the Guiding Statements into Practice in the Primary School Page 2 Undefeated Champions / Let’s Run for Charity / Athletes of the Summer Bangkok Patana is an IB World School, accredited by CIS and NEASC

“We develop global citizens who shape their world through independence, empathy, creativity, and critical thinking.”

T

he Guiding Statements have very big concepts and words to put in front of a child who is between the ages of 3 - 11, especially when English might not be their home language, so how do we begin to unpick our ‘Values’ with our youngest children here at Bangkok Patana? Introducing our values within assemblies is one way in which we begin to expose the children to new vocabulary. This then has to be supported through something to which the children can relate. For example, last week in our first Primary assembly, I led the children through a number of our values and gave each one a story to remember it by. Using the celebration of Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday, something we are learning about in school, the five golden tickets led us through the values of: Kind and Compassionate Resourceful and Creative Motivated and Engaged

Inspired and ‘Healthy’ Diverse and Inclusive

A hairdresser who cuts the hair of the homeless people in London. The ice bucket challenge – but why did we do it? How we use our growth mindset to keep trying and working at something because we want to succeed. This image helped us to see all of the things we have to go through to succeed. The 60 second hoola-hoop challenge. We are all different but think about others all of the time.

Do ask your child what they remember about these values and what they mean as we work together to develop students from different nationalities who will grow to meet their full potential. We hope they will also develop values that will have a long lasting impact on them as they grow into successful and well-rounded adults. We are really enjoying having the children back in school and we look forward to seeing you around campus throughout the year. Do remember, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. T

he Bangkok Patana School Gymnastics Team continue to go from strength to strength and this year we are hoping to replicate many of the successes we achieved last year. In particular, the Level 3 Boys’ Gymnastics team were undefeated across EVERY competition they entered last academic year! Gymnastics is a sport that is becoming more popular in the region and more gymnasts are training and competing. The difficulty and the standard of execution in each of the different exercises that the gymnasts need to perform make competitions very tough. Girls compete in four apparatus: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise and boys compete in six apparatus: flооr, pоmmеl hоrѕе, stіll rіngѕ, vаult, pаrаllеl bаrѕ and hоrіzоntаl bаr. The score they receive in each apparatus will be a combination between the difficulty of the exercise that they perform and how they execute it. All gymnasts compete individually and as part of a team. A team must have a minimum of three gymnasts and maximum of six. The team scores are calculated by taking the best three scores in each apparatus and adding them up all together. The level of gymnastics that the Level 3 Boys’ team displayed across every competition last academic year 2015/16 was highly impressive. The team took a gold trophy in every single event that they competed in throughout the year: FOBISIA, ISB Black and Gold, SEASAC, BISAC and NIST Championships. This was in addition to many individual trophies and medals at each event. The Level 3 team members were: Jacob Broadhurst, Max Thompson, Miles Tang, Nathaniel Stuart, Tund Theerawit and Tristan Vandermeer. I look forward to seeing the countless hours of training paying off again for our Gymnastics team over the course of this year. In addition to our success in competitions, we have great fun and develop our team spirit.

Level 3 Boys’ Gymnastics Team Results 2015/16

WHAT DID YOU COMPETE IN OVER THE SUMMER? I competed at two shows this summer. The first one was in Göttigen, Germany. Hope and I, did medium level and we got 8th place with 66.406%!!! My second show was in Nice, France. This show was our first ever international show and our first ever Prix St. George level. We got third place with 65.079%!! WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART? My favourite part was seeing the Thai flag up there, because I’m hoping that by next year if I continue to work hard I’ll get to be on the Thai national team for SEA Games 2017. DID YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE OVER THE SUMMER? Honestly…no. Just spent most of my free time doing homework and essays for school and binged watched some TV series.

WHAT DID YOU COMPETE IN OVER THE SUMMER? I competed in about 7 races over the summer including the Dutch Junior Nationals in a few different events like the 800m, 3000m Steeplechase, 5km and long jump. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART? Dutch Nationals was my favourite because it felt amazing to compete at such a high level. DID YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE OVER THE SUMMER? I was volunteering at the European Athletics Championships which was incredibly fun as I watched the top athletes compete. WHATS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE? Got too many movies that I love but Spider-man has got to be one of the best.

WHATS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE? I think that would have to be any Marvel movie really!

he Bangkok Patana Fun Run is more than just a great event for all the family. It also raises money for three great, student-led, school Community Action Teams (CAT) that make a real difference to the lives of real people locally. If you haven't signed up to join the fun yet, here’s a few reasons why you should.

Interact

Bangkok Patana Interact Club is a CAT that is under the umbrella of Rotary International. We aim to empower disadvantaged communities through financial, educational and creative means, in order to fulfil our core principle - to be a humanitarian. We currently support ArtRelief International, a project of Cultural Canvas Thailand, which aims to make the lives of underprivileged people in struggling communities and social groups in Chiang Mai more colourful and enjoyable, through art, music and drama. We also support SOS Children’s Villages Thailand, which is an organisation that provides disadvantaged children with the resources they need as they grow older, as well as a home to stay in. The money we raise from the Fun Run will go towards sponsoring children at the SOS Children’s Villages, as well as purchasing educational resources and gifts for ArtRelief. We intend to give these to the communities and foundations ArtRelief support during our annual Interact trip to Chiang Mai, where we teach and volunteer across a variety of groups. Suyash Kothari, 11G

Operation Smile

Operation Smile is an international medical charity organisation that provides children with free and safe surgeries who are born with the cleft palate, cleft lip or other facial deformities in developing countries. We aim to provide a better and brighter future for as many children as we can with surgical care. The money we receive will allow us to carry out more surgeries, as well as providing gifts and necessities to the children after their surgical care. It costs as little 8,500 baht to change the smiles and more importantly the future of these children for the better. Our mission is to save more lives, one smile at a time. Marina Kusumoto, 11B

We have a strong presence in school thanks to our committed board members and team and will continue promoting our cause through our fun and engaging activities. Any money we receive goes towards our ‘Building a House’ fund, an annual project where we build a house for those in need in the area of Korat. We truly appreciate the funds we receive from our various bake sales and events around the school and are grateful for those who help out. This year, through our main school events of Patana’s Got Talent, ‘Sponsor a Brick’ and Gingerbread house building, we hope that we can raise awareness of Habitat’s cause and our involvement in building a house for somebody. In past years, our fundraising efforts, although hugely beneficial, have only enabled us to attend a yearly build. We would like to change that this year, or set the objective to attend more builds in the future. Thank you for your continued support of Habitat at Patana and we hope to see you at the Fun Run! or families with Years 11 and 12 students who may be considering applications to the United States, this is a good time to get to know the testing requirements of many US colleges. While not all colleges require tests, most do require either the SAT, administered by the Collegeboard, or ACT, administered by ACT.org. They are each offered five or six times per year between September and June and are generally taken during Term 2 and/or 3 of Year 12 and/or Term 1 of Year 13. Some of the most competitive colleges require Subject Tests, which are also given by the Collegeboard. It is a useful step for Year 12 students and families to review their calendars in the autumn and determine when it might be best to prepare for, and take, the SAT, subject tests or ACT. The SAT has been redesigned beginning with the test administration in March 2016. There are some meaningful changes to content and the scoring will range from 400 to 1600 points (instead of the old 2400 point maximum). More information about the SAT and subject tests can be found at: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat?navId=gh-sat For more information about the ACT: http://act.org/ In preparation for the SAT, the Collegeboard offers the PSAT (or PRACTICE SAT) once per year, which will be administered at Bangkok Patana on Saturday October 15th this year. It is offered to students in October of Year 11 and again in Year 12. The dates and specifics are set entirely by the Collegeboard, and Bangkok Patana has no ability to modify either the test or the date on which it is given. The PSAT is a practice test to help students become familiar with the test format and style. It is 2 hours and 45 minutes long, entirely multiple choice and measures evidence-based reading and writing, and mathematics. Unlike the SAT or ACT, there is no essay writing section. Colleges do not receive score results and there is no need for students to prepare in advance. A useful purpose for the PSAT is to establish a baseline for students to understand their strengths and weaknesses in order to focus their test preparation later in Year 12. A letter and opportunity to sign up for the PSAT was sent out recently to parents of Year 11 and 12 students. More information about the PSAT can be found at: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10 Bangkok Patana School is a closed test centre for the SAT and PSAT, which means we offer all of these tests to our students but not to outsiders. Students register through Bangkok Patana for the PSAT but directly with the Collegeboard for the SAT. In order to register, students need the following codes: CEEB Code: 695190 Test Centre Code: 71106. We are not a test centre for the ACT, so students need to register and take the test elsewhere. We are happy to provide support and guidance for decisions related to these tests, but registration for them is the responsibility of the student. Please visit our Firefly page for more information: https://community.patana.ac.th/cug Individual guidance is available from our Careers and University office. We look forward to working with you and your students on their future plans!

Tania Leyland, Youth & Community Coordinator RISE is a Community Action Team (CAT) that currently supports the Place of Grace based in the Mahathai community of Bangna. Place of Grace run children’s and young people’s clubs and provide a safe environment for the children where they are educated and fed. There are 160 children and teenagers registered on their books and they run a food and clothes bank service for the families on the register. RISE recently funded a trip to the seaside for some of the children, many of whom had never been to a beach— the children were so excited, they ran into the sea with their clothes on! On 25th August RISE held a bake sale and successfully raised 11,217 baht in 30 minutes! Thanks must go to the dedicated RISE members and the support of the Bangkok Patana community, without whom such a feat would not be possible. The money raised will be used to support the Place of Grace and make the world a better place for its children.

#38: Auditory Delights A spectrogram is a picture of sound. A spectrogram shows the frequencies that make up the sound, from low to high, and how they change over time, from left to right. With this experiment you can compare spectrograms of different sounds, or use the mic to see what your own sounds look like. This is one of many from the Chrome Music Lab, a collection of experiments that let anyone, at any age, explore how music works. They're collaborations between musicians and coders, all built with the freely available Web Audio API. Have fun! Why do some noises seem louder at night? Are there secret messages in music played backward? How can Siri understand different accents? Why does the sound of gum chewing drive some people mad? Explore the surprising side of sound with Sound Uncovered, an award-winning interactive collection from the Exploratorium featuring auditory illusions and acoustic phenomena. You’re guaranteed to learn something new. Have a melodious weekend…. Brian Taylor, Assistant Principal, Campus Curriculum Technology Integration

Weekly news from the Transport Department

ECAs Don’t forget to check your child's ECA schedule on the Parents’ Gateway and make sure that it is correct. Please remember to contact Transport if you make any changes to your child’s ECA schedule.

Bus Pass and Bus Numbers All children in Year 1-6 will have received a new bus pass relating to the ECA bus schedule. Please ensure your children have this bus pass with them so they and Transport staff can check this and direct students to their bus quickly. You can also check the bus numbers via the Parents’ Gateway. Secondary students should also know their bus number before coming to the car park, please help to inform them. They can also get this from their ECA teacher/instructor or from the Transport Office at break or lunchtime. Your help with this matter will help to ensure the buses depart promptly after school.

Contact Us

The Transport Department’s direct phone number is 02 785 2470. The office is staffed from 6:00am - 6:00pm Monday to Friday. You can also contact us via email at transport@patana.ac.th

Drop Off / Pick Up Zone Please remember that no cars should be left unattended in the pick up / drop off zone at the front of school. Parents and/or drivers must remain with their vehicle at all times and not walk into school. Blocking the area for other parents/drivers causes inconvenience and upset. Please help to ensure that no cars are left unattended to keep this area running smoothly. If parents/drivers need to leave the car to enter school please park across the road in the Sports Complex Car Park. Thank you for your understanding.

Taxi area Please help to ensure the safe pick up and drop off of our community and avoid picking up students/ parents in the area in front of True Coffee. Cars waiting in this area not only cause congestion on soi Lasalle but they also block the area for people using a taxi often requiring them to step out into the road to get in a taxi. We want to help to ensure the safety of our community at all times so please assist by dropping off/ picking up in the Drop off zone or at the Sports Complex car park.

Soi LaSalle 39 Some students are being dropped off at the U-turn area / entrance to Soi 39. Please avoid dropping off in this area. It causes congestion and is not considered a safe drop off area. Please drive into the car park to drop off, use the drop off zone or the Sports Complex Car Park. Thank you for helping to ensure the safe arrival of your child to school.

Genevieve Ahl, Services Manager

B

angkok Patana School takes the safety of our school community very seriously. We have a management team that meet and discuss many different crisis scenarios and we have processes and procedures in place for these. We have strong links with the local police and the various embassies who alert us to any security concerns and also visit our school to review our existing procedures and provide advice on security measures. One of the areas that we practise regularly throughout the year is the Fire Evacuation and Lockdown procedures. In Term 1 and 2, we have ‘announced’ and ‘unannounced’ drills. This enables our community to practise reacting appropriately in the event of an alarm sounding on the school campus.

Please read below so you are aware of our procedures should you be on campus when an alarm sounds. What to do if you are on the school campus when an alarm sounds? 

Lockdown Alarm

If you are on campus and hear the ‘lockdown’ alarm (similar to a siren), please follow instructions from nearby staff. If you are not in a building, please enter the nearest building and follow instructions from staff. In a lockdown, you should be out of sight until you hear three clear whistles from the security team or are instructed that it is all clear from a security guard or member of staff. You will not be allowed to enter or exit the campus during a lockdown. 

Fire Alarm

If you are on the school campus and hear a fire alarm please act immediately and follow the Evacuation Route sign to the nearest assembly point. (see example). Please make sure that you report to the Zone Fire Point Person who will be wearing an emergency jacket and have radio communication. They will be located in the middle of the zone area and will take your name and tell you where you need to stand. There are six zones – green, yellow, blue, white, red, and purple. Look for these signs when you are next in school to familiarise yourself with the evacuation routes. If you are outside the school grounds during a Fire Evacuation please note that you will not be allowed entry into school until the all clear has been given. Please follow instructions from our Security team.

What does the flashing red light mean? If you see a flashing red light on the wall or ceiling it means that an alarm has been activated somewhere in school. When the light is just flashing you do not need to do anything or leave the building but be on alert to listen for an audible alarm which will let you know what to do next. The activated alarm will be checked by the guards and if necessary the fire alarm or lock down alarm will then sound for you to respond to as normal. So you only need to respond if you hear the actual siren or if a guard or senior member of staff gives you instructions to follow. If it is a false alarm the flashing red light will stop shortly without any alarms sounding.

When will the alarms sound? Luckily anytime you may have heard the alarm it has been a drill only. We hold announced and unannounced Fire and Lockdown Drills throughout the year and these procedures are for the safety and protection of all students, staff and visitors. If you are on the school campus during the alarm sounding please help to set a good example to all students by responding quickly, remaining quiet during this time and following instructions from Senior Staff.

Many thanks for your cooperation.

Call to Auditions It’s Panto Time Again! This year the Bangkok Community Theatre (BCT) will be performing the traditional British pantomime Aladdin over the first 2 weekends of December 2016 (December 2, 3, 4 and 9, 10, 11) at Creative Industries @ M Theatre on Phetchaburi Rd. For those of you who don’t know this ever popular form of entertainment, British Pantomime is nothing to do with "mime". It is a non-stop, fun packed show with lots of over the top acting (if you can call it that), singing, dancing and comedy. It’s a crazy, chaotic, fun-packed couple of hours of entertainment beloved by the young and young at heart. After the rip-roaring success of Cinderella in 2014, this year BCT will be performing Aladdin, directed by Ian Robinson, and produced by Suman Tharan and John Wright.

Auditions Details: Auditions for the show will be held at Bistro 33 on Sunday 4th September from 11am to 1:30pm. There are 11 named parts, and the show also needs a chorus of 6 to 10 people who enjoy singing and dancing. British pantomime is very flexible and, although the list of the characters on the website outlines what we are looking for, if you think you have any special skills (e.g. tap dancing, circus skills, gymnastic skills, magician, martial arts or whatever) come along to the auditions, strut your stuff, and the production team will see if your speciality can be incorporated into the show! For complete details and character descriptions and an audition form, go to: http://bangkokcommunitytheatre.com/project/aladdin-2016/
