I wish to inform you that our Primary Principal, Mrs Clare Sharp will be leaving us at the end of the term after six and a half dedicated years of leading the Primary School. Clare is an incredibly talented instructional leader who has completely reviewed and overhauled our Primary curriculum over the past few years and has made the Primary School a ‘Centre of Excellence’, with learning at the forefront of everything we do. We are all going to miss Clare very much and wish her all the very best as she moves back to the UK in January. Assistant Principal, Jason Cooper will be ActingPrimary Principal until the end of the Academic Year. Jason has previous principal experience in South Korea and I’m confident he has all of the required senior leadership skills to support our primary learners.
We are getting very excited about our upcoming two-day professional development conference focusing on ‘The Global Learner’, which we will be hosting at Bangkok Patana School on October 20st and 21nd. I’m delighted to see a large number of parents and students have already signed up for the Thursday afternoon session featuring world-renowned polar explorer Robert Swan, which is not to be missed. I’m sure parents and students alike will really value what Robert has to say particularly regarding his support for Antarctica 2041.
Assistant Principal Cindy Adair is undertaking a very important school-wide review of our current ECA programme. She will be establishing a key working group to oversee the review which will include teachers and parents. Key drivers for the review include a desire to make sure our ECA programme aligns itself with the new school guiding statements. Cindy also wants the working group to look at the whole quality assurance of our ECA programme including timetable, variety of offerings and whether we have got the balance right between non-academic vs. academic offerings. This is a very important programme review for us this year and I’m confident that the working group will recommend positive changes as we aim to make the programme stronger while maximising optimal learning opportunities outside of the classroom for our Bangkok Patana learners.
On Wednesday this week I hosted a Year 11 pizza lunch at the Thai Sala. Heads of Year randomly selected eight students to meet with me and discuss any issues they may have. This week I met with Patricia, Lou Lou, Kieran, Dillon, Yu Xin, Shifeng, Jasmina and Diego. We spent a lot of time discussing the pressures of the looming IGCSE exams and looking at positive strategies to relieve stress including getting a good amount of sleep each night. I really enjoyed my discussions with Year 11 and always value spending quality time with our students.
I really enjoyed attending this week’s PTG annual social evening held at Quince Eatery and Bar. It was a great opportunity to meet up with new parents to the school and hear how their children were settling into their new learning environment. A big thank you to Susanne Scanzoni von Lichtenfels and her PTG team for organising such a fun social/networking evening.
We have just received confirmation of the Cambridge Outstanding Learners Awards. Congratulations to all of you from everyone at Bangkok Patana School, we are immensely proud of your amazing academic achievements which you can see in the table below.

his is a very exciting academic year for our community as Bangkok Patana School will celebrate its 60th anniversary on the 15th May 2017. To commemorate the occasion there will be a number of events taking place including the Jazz and Blues Anniversary Party on Wednesday 22 nd March to which all of the community is invited and the visit of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on November 4th to officially open the new Science Center.
On Monday 15th May there will be a Tiger Parade. Many of you will have seen events like the famous Elephant Parade above which tours the world with beautifully decorated elephants to raise money to help preserve the species. Well the Bangkok Patana Tiger Parade will be similar but with the added fun of tracking down each tiger on campus! Each Year Group will shortly be receiving their own undecorated 60cm tiger and it will be up to them to decide how to decorate it. As you can see from the Elephant Parade, there are infinite possibilities! So put these dates into your diary and join us to celebrate the 60 th Anniversary of Bangkok Patana School!

Varsity Boys’ Football vs Shrewsbury On Wednesday 28th of September the Varsity Boys’ Football team traveled to play rivals Shrewsbury in a league match away from home. The boys knew that this would be a tough challenge but nevertheless they needed to come out with a win from this match to be well-ranked for the upcoming BISAC tournament. The match started smoothly as the Varsity Boys’ applied early pressure towards the home side. With scruffy passing from the home side, the Varsity Boys’ were able to use their mistakes to create chances of our own with the likes of Lo Sidelind and Kevin Wuethrich creating the first few chances. However, they didn’t reach the back of the net. Hard work and pressure was quickly and consistently applied by striker Michael Nunbhakdi who looked dangerous to the opposing side. Not long into the half, the Varsity Boys’ went 1-0 up thanks to a swift shot from Alessandro Kho Pablo who caught the keeper off guard. Shrewsbury refused to give up and fought back strongly creating trouble for the Varsity Tigers. However, a well struck shot from distance by Shaan Ali hit the back of the net making it 2-0 to the Tigers. Not long before the end of the first half Shrewsbury broke the deadlock to come back 2-1. The second half started slow for the Varsity Tigers as a quick goal from the Shrewsbury side leveled the score to 2-2. But the inspirational half-time talk from Mr Osborne and Coach Manibu was not forgotten as the team fought back harder than ever. With great defending by center backs Denis Sprenger, James Ashford and Ben Aryle nothing was getting the better of them. Hard work finally paid off when James Ashford made it 3-2 with 10 minutes to go! Another goal was then added by the Tigers as a superb half volley by Shaan Ali was struck hard into the bottom left corner. The coaches were highly impressed and classed this as one of the best goals so far in the season. The final whistle blew and the score ended 4-2. Now the Varsity Boys’ sit with 6 points on top spot in the table. Next game is a hard home game against TRAIL which will be the deciding match for 1st and 2nd seed for BISAC. Final score: Shrewsbury 2-4 BPS Goal scorers: Alessandro Kho Pablo (1), James Ashford (1), Shaan Ali (2)
Under 15 Girls’ Touch vs ISB Last Monday, the team arrived with their correct kit and were ready to play! ISB have been our number one competition in Touch Rugby for many years, so some of our team members were understandably nervous and essentially not very optimistic. When the opposition arrived, we had done our warm up and drills, focusing on settles and defending drills. In the first half, we were put under pressure and our nerves got the better of us allowing ISB to draw level with us, 2-2. Our tries were scored by drawing out players and passing to the wings. Unfortunately, there were many gaps in our defence allowing ISB to run pass and score. ISB could have scored more if they hadn’t dropped so many balls. In the second half, we gained in confidence, trusting our teammates and listening and believing the encouraging words of coach and captain. We were able to close our gaps, increase our settles and were more focused! We finished with winning score of 5-2. I think what we improved upon the most was knowing when to substitute because we successfully tired out the opposition. Things to work on in our next match are settles, being vocal and maintaining focus.
Under 13 Girls’ Basketball vs ISB This was our fourth match and was against ISB. We were a little bit sleepy at the start and weren’t concentrating on defending. They were leading until the third quarter and when our coach reminded us to calm down and ignore our nervous, we went into game mode and everyone started to cheer each other on. We were trying to be more enthusiastic to re-energise the players on the court. Our team came back and was leading all of a sudden with free shots. We finished with a nice shot, giving us the point we need to take the game 17-16. On reflection it was another tense game. Next time we will work on looking up when we have the ball so then the open person can call for it and go for the shot. Other than that our team is getting better and better.
For representing Israel in European Championship Qualifiers
My favourite part was playing for my country, and being lucky enough to represent my country in football.
I felt we all played really well together and I really liked the fact that our team was really connected.
Not really, as I think it’s important to be my own person rather than aspiring to someone else.

Hand 2 Heart Bake Sale The main aim of Hand2Heart is to support families who struggle due to the impact of HIV and AIDS. Our annual bake sale took place on Friday 30th September and was the first of many events that we have planned for the school year in order to promote and achieve our goals. The event was a huge success; instilling within us all a sense of community and teamwork, whether it was bringing in baked goods, decorating the stalls or tendering the cash. We raised approximately 6000THB, which will contribute to our development activities for the Central Thailand Mission. Thanks for your continued support! Collections A massive thank you for your donations to the Amnesty collection. This collection has now ended so please do not bring any more items to school. There will be further opportunities to support us later in the school year. The next collection is being held by Playing for Change who are holding an instrument collection during the months of October and November. The instruments will be fixed and cleaned before being donated to the Khlong Toey music program; a program that uses music to improve the lives of disadvantaged children in society. Please bring in any unwanted musical instruments and pop them in the boxes at the front of school. Thank you

October Exhibition at the Neilson Hays Library "Between My Lines" Paintings by Sonea Rattanaruangsup 6th—30th October 2016 The October art exhibition at Neilson Hays Library will feature work by Sonea Rattanaruangsup. "Between My Lines" is a collection that captures the impulsive nature of emotions - emotions that when triggered, can change how we perceive ourselves. All of us, at one point or another in our lives, long to tread outside our comfort zones and be somebody else. "Between My Lines" exposes how emotions can drive us to put on certain disguises for the world while leaving our inner selves untouched. November Exhibition at the Neilson Hays Library Pieced Impressions Quilts by Karen Sengal 1st—27th November 2016 Opening Reception at 5pm on Saturday 5th November 2016 Pieced Impressions is a solo exhibition of quilts by Karen Sengel. Karen has been sewing since she was very young. She started quilting about 15 years ago. She began with traditional bed quilts, then moved onto to art quilts, doing this exclusively for the past 10 years. Karen tries to capture the images that have impressed her throughout her 25 years living and traveling in Asia. Many are iconic, some personal. Her quilts are traditionally pieced, then machine quilted in a free motion style which adds texture and interest. Karen grew up in New York state but has spent most of her adult life overseas as an international school teacher, primarily in Asia. She now lives in Chiang Mai with her husband and their Thai cat named Gung.
