A

There are also times when we can’t share information, and this can become a source of tension between home and school. Let’s take another example from two different perspectives.

with the Leader of Learning and Welfare, but you get the same response. Feeling increasingly frustrated, you post something online about your experience. Others express sympathy and encourage you to take it further. Emboldened, you contact the Principal, and Cc the Head of School, demanding to know what sanctions will be given, and asking whether or not they can guarantee your child’s safety. Now let’s flip this around. You have just learnt that your child has been unkind to their friend. There may have been a slap. The teacher telephoned you at the end of the day – which gave you some time to calm yourself before your child reached home. The teacher explained that both children made mistakes but that your child was the one who escalated things. The two children spent part of the afternoon with the teacher, using peaceful problem-solving to repair their friendship. Your child loves school but sometimes get frustrated during a game. Progress is being made, but it can seem like two steps forward, three steps back. You meet with the teacher parents feeling suitably mortified by their child’s behaviour? to discuss next steps and appropriate consequences. Are they even good parents? Commemorating Bangkok Patana’s Long History

T

o honour Bangkok Patana’s long history, patron and daughter of the founder of Bangkok Patana School Ariane Rodel-Steutzel and Board member ML Pariyada Diskul unveiled a wall dedicated to past Heads of School. The photos start with Mrs Quekett, who was the first to hold this role back in 1965 when the school was situated on Soi Ngam Duphli, all the way through to the current Head, Mr Mills. The wall is a testimonial to the dedication of the Heads of School who helped Bangkok

Patana School grow and thrive. Another addition is an area in the Secondary Library honouring former Chair of the Foundation Board Dr Tej Bunnag and his 15 years of service to the school. From visiting royalty, to cutting ribbons on new construction and handing out diplomas every year, Dr Tej’s service to the school and Foundation is a testament to his commitment to the Patana community.

Achieving Full Potential Dan Ahl, Cross Campus Head Tennis Coach

T

his past weekend 34 Patana students competed in the Under 13 BISAC Singles championship on Saturday and Sunday with the oldest in Year 8 and the youngest in Year 4.

This got me onto thinking about how sport, but in this specific case, tennis aligns itself so well with Bangkok Patana’s mission statement, vision and values. One of our goals is always to help all our tennis players achieve their full potential and the Academy structure is designed to facilitate this. A few key words I have taken from watching the students at the weekend are: Independence - students are responsible for calling their own lines, making sure they know the score and call it at the start of each point, knowing when to change ends, how to deal with a possible bad line call from their opponent etc etc.

Creativity - there are many ways to hit a ball and lots of different shots to master and to out perform others you have to develop an all round game which is going to gel together when competing and also when under pressure from an opponent. Passionate - loving what you are doing, the students do have a great sense of camaraderie and it’s true lifelong parent friendships are made through their child’s tennis as there is an awful lots of training sessions and events to watch and support at.

An Epic Experience T

he Duke of Edinburgh, Silver assessed cycling expedition in Khao Yai (Nakhon Nayok and Prachin Buri) gave us an amazing experience. The expedition began on 4th December and finished the 7th. Over those four days, we left our comfort zones and ventured into nature, and as a result we have learnt a variety of survival and teamwork skills.

In DoE, there is never a moment you spend at the campsite that feels like it is going to waste. There always appears to be another more productive activity that pops up especially when you think that you are finally finished. In a way, it is quite entertaining as there will never be a dull moment around the campsite. Also, if you are considering DoE Silver, the camps and campsites are much better than they were in the Bronze award. KENTARO (COOKING AND CLEANING) At the first glance, cooking and cleaning are the easiest tasks to do as a group. However, there were a few issues that are hidden beyond the surface. First of all, cooking delicious meals using trangia is a most risky job to fulfill, as these “meals” can attract bugs if they are on the ground. This was the major problem during the practice journey, we dropped some of the foods on the ground which formed an ant paradise. However, on the assessed journey, we

successfully learnt from this and were more careful about how we disposed of our food. The process of cleaning the Trangia was time consuming and was the thing I found most difficult throughout the journey. While the others had already finished with cleaning, I had to use the wire-wool scourer to get rid of a stain caused by incomplete combustion. In order to improve this skill, I need to collaborate with my group members through multitasking. This would benefit my ability to cooperate with others. LESSONS LEARNED A quality we have collectively developed as a result of DofE is gratitude. Never before have we felt so lucky to have nice houses with ACs, big beds, and clean bathrooms. The IA taught us that the life we live at home is very comfortable, but sometimes it is good to get outside one’s comfort zone in order to have new experiences. Overall, we feel lucky to have this unique experience and have certainly developed lifelong memories. We are sure each and every one of us has had at least one major take-away from this trip, and we have learned a lot of transferable skills.

Changes in the Secondary Library Stephen Murgatroyd, Cross Campus Head of Libraries

I

n the third week of our Library series, we are going to focus on our older students. In the Secondary Library, we have slowly been rearranging our books and adding a few more shelves here and there to allow us to expand many areas of our collection. The Home Language section has been enlarged to allow for the growth we are planning for, involving the World Languages department, the students and the parents. We now have five dedicated shelves available in a specific area of the upstairs part of the Library – near the doors to the bridge across to the Science building just for Home Languages. We have created three new areas within the Library for specific books … a ‘Life’ section for memoirs, biographies and life skills books, a dedicated Parents section upstairs and a selection of Classic novels throughout the ages downstairs by the stage area. These areas have been well received, used regularly and we have been able to highlight a wider range of titles as a result. More recently, we have put six new shelves in the general fiction section downstairs, which has allowed us the chance to expand the Senior fiction section, which is great news for our Senior students, staff and parents as well as create a new Genre area, where students can browse a specific type of book, all in one place. Lastly, the signage throughout the Secondary Library has been unified so there is a great flow about it all, making things easier to find and to navigate, making sure that finding just the right book is a little simpler. We look forward to welcoming you and helping you to find just what you need.

ARTS COUNCIL The “Art” of Self-expression Ashvika Bansal, 8M

I

believe everything around us is a beautiful expression of the word art. What we hear, see, feel, wear, write, or even cook has some kind of art in it. It’s omnipresent. I was fascinated and inspired by art at an early age, not only by traveling to different parts of the world and exploring different cultures, but also by watching movies, shows, and listening to different kinds of music. I was hooked. Art helps me emote my feelings when words cannot describe. Expressing ourselves through art is not just good for our soul but is a type of therapy. It helps me in-deal with my negative and positive emotions by bringing out my creative side. Whether its sketching, painting, singing, dancing, or acting, I have identified various different forms of art to self-express myself through. Art has helped me reflect my inner self. USING NEW TECHNIQUES DSince the start of this year, I have been working on creating a unique Hot Air Balloon using a paper mache technique for Art class. This was a new technique for me since I was never interested in paper mache. I am absolutely enchanted by the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have always loved the character Spiderman, so decided to make a Spiderman faced hot air balloon. After putting 10 layers of newspaper strips on the balloon, I have started with detailing the balloon with rolled paper sticks for the eyes and the web parts. The balloon is yet to be completed, it’s still a work in process. Art is all about inspiration. My tutor base is an Art classroom. The artwork displayed in Ms Marcovici’s classroom inspires and motivates me to enhance my art skills. Looking at the painting there, I feel connected to the artwork. Every piece of art is a way of self-expressing and communicating along with having fun.

Expressing Myself Through Drama Aprilia Mitchell 10C

I

am an IGCSE Drama Student in Year 10. Recently my class and I have been working on individual or group projects using part of the script from a play called Hedda Gabler. We have been studying this play for a few weeks now. For my piece, I have chosen to do a monologue of one of the characters by putting together a group of different lines from Act 4 of the play to create one large piece.

UNI COUNSELORS’ CORNER

Liberal Arts Colleges and Programmes Kevin Keller, Head of Careers and Universities Faculty

A

s university applications from international students become more concentrated to fewer institutions, we have seen competition for places rise higher and higher. Recently, the Careers and Universities Faculty hosted a coffee morning highlighting alternative courses and majors at some of the world’s top universities. Some have less competitive admission standards because of undersubscription while others offer a diverse approach to university education for an “undecided” student but nonetheless all will prepare students for a plethora future careers. WHAT ARE LIBERAL ARTS? The “liberal arts” has long been the foundation of education at North American universities. A curriculum that is very similar in structure to the IB, liberal arts institutions and majors seek to educate students “liberally”, or over a wide variety of subject areas. Politics play no role in this particular definition of liberal. In a study conducted in the US by the National Centre for Higher Education Management Systems, 93 percent of hiring managers surveyed said that capacity to think critically, communicate clearly and solve complex problems is more important than a candidate’s undergraduate major. Liberal arts colleges and programmes all seek to cultivate all of these skills and more, not to mention the clear benefits gained for students pursuing selective graduate study.

LIBERAL ARTS PROVIDES CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS While American institutions are considered to be at the forefront of these skills, communication and critical thinking based standard of education, the idea of liberal arts is beginning to become more and more popular in other areas of the world. The United Kingdom alone has 10 universities offering a Liberal Arts course, including Bristol University, King’s College London and the University of Birmingham. The University of Exeter’s Liberal Arts course allows students to explore areas across the Humanities, Social Sciences and Business. Their recent graduates are working as Cultural Mapping Coordinators, Researchers, PR Account Executive and Press Officers at employers like the UK Ministry of Justice, Lush Cosmetics and more. Students who would like to study in the United Kingdom for university but are having a hard time narrowing down their interests to a particular course would benefit the most from pursuing a liberal arts track. Dutch university colleges at Leiden, Maastricht, Amsterdam and elsewhere have put a unique European twist on the traditional American approach to liberal arts. Leiden University College The Hague recently created the Bachelor of Science in Global Challenges, giving students the opportunity to major in areas like Earth, Energy and Sustainability, Global Public Health and Governance,

Economics and Development. Meanwhile, in Australia, Monash University created a similar Bachelor of Science in Global Challenges. Monash’s degree teaches students to use a scientific approach to the world’s biggest challenges, from climate change to war. While engaging in a specific scientific discipline of the student’s choosing, they are also receiving training in leadership, persuasive communication, ethics and corporate responsibility; all stellar skills to have for careers across many areas of work.

Claremont McKenna College Philosophy, Politics and Economics

I

was admitted to my first-choice college - Claremont McKenna under Early Decision in December. I am so excited to be pursuing higher education in sunny Southern California this fall. One reason I applied to CMC was because of its curricular emphasis on government, economics and international relations. I also liked the fact that it is a part of a consortium, as this allows me to utilise many of the shared resources. Being able to take classes at any of the Claremont Colleges gives me both the small-school and large-university experience at the same time. In addition, I was drawn towards CMC’s Washington programme, which provides a unique opportunity for students to spend a semester working closely with those influencing decisions in Washington DC and learn more about the intricacies of US government and politics whilst taking classes at night. Crossovers within the IB syllabus has taught me the importance of interdisciplinary studies as it allows for the synthesis of ideas from different disciplines. This combined with my passion for activism drew me towards the Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) major which holds an emphasis on developing strong critical writing and communication skills and bodes good outcomes for those wanting to study law. I am the Vice-Captain of the Varsity Volleyball team and am also a member of the Touch Rugby team. I love sports as it creates an environment that challenges and spending time with my teammates is always fun! Last year I was involved in Thongbai Daycare, an after-school activity where we were able to engage with and take care of underprivileged kids from a local daycare center.

Year 13 students are welcome to donate with a consent form, as well as Business Staff and Teaching Assistants. Parents are also welcome to come to school to donate. Please access the application forms and consent forms here - these must be filled out and returned on the day. Blood can be donated from 9.00 am to 3.30 pm in CON420 in the Conference Centre. It is important to note that people who have spent more than three months in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland from 1980 to 1996, or five years in France or Ireland from 1980 to 2001, are not eligible to donate. No smoking one hour before or after donating
