To the students heading back to school this week, I challenge you to make the most of this opportunity. Ask yourself what you want to achieve this year – be honest – and then plan the steps you will take to realise your ambition. I do hope you have a BRILLIANT year ahead!
Great Educational Articles to Share: At my first whole staff welcome back meeting, I talked about the importance of recognising and encouraging student potential, which is also so strongly embedded in our school’s mission state ment. Our whole school learning objective this year is learning focused: “I make use of evidence-based strategies to unlock student potential.”
We have 298 new students starting Bangkok Patana School this term! We hope your transition is a smooth one and we are so glad you are joining the Bangkok Patana community! Our total school population is 2,316 students and we are the largest inter national school in Thailand.
I showed two brief video clips by one of my all-time favourite Life Coaches, Simon Sinek relating to Unlocking Potential.
Welcome Back!
I am delighted to welcome you all back to the 2022/23 aca demic year. A special welcome to any new families joining us this August, we are so pleased you chose Bangkok Patana School.
I am starting my fifteenth year as Head of School and 40th year in education and it is really an honour to lead such a brilliant school. The new academic year has started incredibly well, and I have observed lots of happy/relaxed students and teachers. Students are really enjoying the flexibili ty OF mask wearing being optional when they are outside. Hopefully it won’t be too long before mask wearing will be optional, full stop!
2 Bangkok Patana School News 19/08/2022
One of the most enticing aspects of a new academic year is the opportunity for a fresh start. Returning to routines with a positive mind-set and clear head can set the tone for the coming months, and the first few weeks of a new academic year can often pro vide just the right amount of perspective to set new goals and ob jectives. However, a fresh start means nothing if you don’t take the time to plan your approach. There are few times in life that we have the opportunity to truly start afresh, but Term 1 in the school calendar is one of them. With a new year come new teachers, new timetables, classrooms and subjects. Exciting and unexpected challenges present themselves on a daily basis and individuals have the opportunity to reinvent themselves based on the skills, experience and maturity they have gained over the previous year.
Staffing: We have 38 new staff joining us for this academic year, the new staff have already spent a week at school attending a very well organised and in formative staff induction pro gramme which Cindy Adair and her team has done a superb job planning! As al ways, we are delighted with the high quality of teachers joining the Bangkok Patana community this year.

Of a possible 45 points, our graduating class aver age score in the IB Diploma was 37 points, 5 points higher than the provisional global average of 32 points. As a non-selective school we are incredibly proud of this. Such a high average score points to some outstanding individual performances: 29% of our cohort of 124 students achieved more than 40 points, against a global statistic of 14%.

Matt Mills Head of School Summer Works: As with every school and especially large schools like Bangkok Patana, an enormous amount of summer work has taken place while you have been on summer holidays. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking our Business Director Craig White, our Buildings and Grounds Manager Khun Prawit and all of our hard-working team for all of the good work they have done over the summer holidays making sure the school is fully prepared as we welcome back all of our students.
IB Results 2022: May 2022 represented an important step back to normality following two years of IB results being issued without exami nations. We are delighted with the resilience displayed by our Grad ‘22 cohort throughout their COVID-19 affected IB Pro gramme, and even more delighted with the outstanding results that they obtained when restrictions were lifted and they were able to show what they could do in examinations. These results, because of the impact of the pandemic on grade boundaries, are best read in comparison with world averages rather than in historical context.
What is particularly pleasing about this is the fact that the average tenure of these five students at Patana is 9 years, truly showing the impact of a Patana edu Wecation.wish all our Graduating Class of 2022 the very best with their future studies at their chosen universities and look forward to hearing their stories when they come back to visit us for that legendary bowl of noodles! Enjoy your first weekend of this academic year!

UK based for the summer were James (Year 11), Finn (Year 12) and Matt (Year 13) who all had qualifying times for British and English Summer Swimming Cham pionships. The two events invite the highest ranked stu dents in their age group from across the UK, making it a challenging event to qualify for. The three TigerSharks were joined by Coach Joe for both events and enjoyed a very successful trip. James had a very exciting week as he took away a Bronze medal from British Nation als in 100m Freestyle, before a superb Silver at English Nationals in the 200m Freestyle, making multiple other finals across the meet as well. Finn also made a number of finals (top 10 finishes), with big PB performances in 200m IM and 400m IM in particular. Matt had to wait all summer to dive in for his 50m Butterfly and swam well to be on his PB time, recording a top 15 finish. All the boys were in their first ever Summer Nationals in the UK so will grow hugely from the experience.

8 Bangkok Patana School News 19/08/2022 a SPorting Summer!
What a summer of sport we have seen! From England Women’s European Championship triumph in front of a record breaking crowd; a hugely successful commonwealth games hosted in Birmingham where Australia finished top of the medal table; to England Rugby recording only their second test series win in Australia. We have seen boundaries broken down, sporting legends retire and a call to increase opportunities for young people, a legacy has certainly been left to inspire future generations. Here at Bangkok Patana, we are hopeful and excited for a full calendar of sporting events this academic year and the return of SEASAC, alongside five FOBISIA invitationals taking place right on our turf! Weka (Year 11) had a truly remarkable summer. He was once again away competing against the very best sailors in the world, in the Optimist Class, where he fin ished the season as World Champion. Weka has been an exceptional sailor world wide over the last few years in particular and continues to grow as he approached senior waters. The World Championship included 276 sailors from 61 countries worldwide, coming out on top in an incredible competition. Entering the final day, Weka lay 6th in the standings, needing to make up points on counterparts from Ukraine, USA and Sweden. He did exactly that, showing consistency and disci pline across 12 tricky races to end the event with an im pressive 96 points, two clear of his counterpart from the USA. Well done Weka! Across the UK, there were a number of current and former students lighting up the big stage. Firstly, Alumni student Gemma Frizelle has become Common wealth Champion in the Rhythmic Gym nastics. Gemma, who spent seven years at Bangkok Patana, completed a sen sational final performance to jump from 3rd to 1st in the medal standings.
9Bangkok Patana School News19/08/2022TheTigerSharks were not done there as Shubhankar competed at Indian Nationals. Shub had to qualify via regional rounds in India, which he travelled back for only two months beforehand. Across a busy few day of rac ing, Shub claimed a superb Gold medal in 50m Butter fly, Bronze in 50m Backstroke and 5th in 100m Butterfly. Shub is now well and truly on the National selectors ra dar in India and we look forward to more chances to race for his country in the future. Additionally, Chaychan Baumann qualified for the Swiss Nationals in the 100m Freestyle.TheTennis
Tigers are also back early and busy getting up to speed. Pin (Year 11), Raichah (Year 9) and Asama (Year 9) took part in the 100Plus National Schools com petition. After some time off during the school break, the girls kicked back into action early and performed admira bly against the top schools around Thailand. Their efforts were rewarded as the 8th top school in the event. Lovely work girls, and good luck to the boys this weekend!
Summer is a time for resting, relaxing and regener ating before the new school but sport offers such a rich experience for our students that we love supporting. Sport, for many of our students, is a huge part of their per sonal well being and we can’t wait to see a full year of sport commence in the coming weeks. See you at trials!
Our dancers were also showing off their skills this summer as Nana and Ari (both Year 8) entered the In ternational Young Dancers Competition. The girls per formed incredibly well, showing off the skills they have been working on through the last school year. They were awarded a well-deserved Third Place in the Pop Duo category! Awesome work Nana and Ari.

With that in mind, I would like to take this opportunity to remind our entire school community of one of the most awesome features of Bangkok Patana School – our very own Outdoor Classroom (ODC). Over a decade in ex istence, the ODC is without a doubt the best place for our students to have real experiential learning opportu nities for so many subjects in their learning. From basic to higher level ecology to artistic and literary inspiration, our ODC has give nearly all year groups opportunities for learning about nature and wildlife in an urban setting. The ODC is a complex ecosystem situated on the south side of LaSalle, just next to our football and track areas. It has several rai of urban rainforest with trails, signage, an earthen building and fully equipped outdoor lab spaces that allow our students of all ages to get hands on science learning in an outdoor, functional ecosystem environment.Overtheyears I have been so happy to see our stu dents from Nursery all the way to the Higher Level IB students make excellent use of this feature. Along with the physical aspects of the ODC, we have a full time Outdoor Spaces Technician, Khun Turbo, who will accompany all visitors to make sure they have all of the equipment needs met and have someone with a deep level of expertise to help their students get the most out of their time in the jungle! Any questions or concerns, please contact Coke Smith (cosm@patana.ac.th), Bangkok Patana School Environ mental Science Leader.

Completing a post-graduate Masters degree takes hours of painstaking re search and study. Undertaking a Masters degree, whilst also working fulltime, takes grit, determination and a village to support you.
Masters study exposes the student to evidence-based research they can the draw upon in their day-to-day practice and exposes them to other academics in the field. As such, Bangkok Patana is keen to support and encourage faculty to undertake this level of study. Throughout 2021/22, twenty-one Bangkok Patana Teachers and Instructors undertook Masters level study, and continue to work toward graduation. It is with great pride we present the faculty who have completed their Masters degrees in the past 18 months:

Purnima’s published research focuses on her interests in interdisciplinary learning and the relationship between visual art and literacy. She is co-author of the Secondary English textbooks, ‘Inspired English: Creative Writing and Critical Thinking Through Art’ published by Macmillan Education Australia, available at the Secondary library, and is currently writing a new book focusing on inspiring Secondary students in Years 7-9, of all abilities and learning styles, to engage creatively with reading and writing poetry through learning activities that support learners to generate an appreciation of writing poetry through engagement with art.
Explore how visual art can fire the imagination through the power of imagery and be a powerful stimulus to inspire ideas for writing in a variety of text types including poetry, narratives, feature articles, persuasive writing and playscripts.
Purnima Ghogar, Secondary English Teacher Intended to combat the ‘writer’s block’, challenge views of poetry as dull, inaccessible or always needing to rhyme, and above all, to enrich budding writers with new perspectives, this masterclass video demonstrates the proven benefits of using visual art as a powerful stimulus for developing creative writing. Works of art can be used as a springboard for developing a range of skills includ ing: close reading, critical thinking, observational and in terpretative skills, speaking and listening, development of rich and adventurous descriptive vocabulary for writing in a variety of text types, as well as confident experimen tation with a range of literary techniques.

The act of writing about art is known as Ekphrasis, which takes its name from a literary practice that dates back to ancient Greek times. Today the term is most com monly used to describe either prose or poetry inspired by a work of visual art. It can provide an illuminating per spective on a work of art or the ideas it has inspired. In its most simple form it offers a vivid and often dramatic verbal or written description. The Ekphrastic approach is particularly relevant, inclusive and accessible for to day’s students living in an increasingly visual world and develops our appreciation of the nature of art and its rel evance to our lives. Discover the practical steps that students and teach ers can take to develop oral and written responses in thoughtful and liberating ways through a guided explo ration of Mark Rothko’s abstract painting, Untitled (Red), 1956; these steps can be applied to writing in a range of poetry forms inspired by any artwork:

Welcome back to another wonderful year at Bangkok Patana School! I am sure many in our community are still feeling a bit of jet lag after re turning from overseas. Others may be reflecting on nice, relaxing “staycations” in Thailand after having enjoyed a lovely holiday here. Whatever you did over the summer break, I hope you got some nature-time in! I sure did. I just returned from a seven-week wildlife extravaganza in Southeast Asia and North America with hundreds of species seen and photographed throughout. In today’s column, I would like to remind our communi ty of the incredible wildlife viewing opportunities that we have within a few hours from Bangkok. Here are some images of the amazing wildlife that are still thriving near by this massive Asian megacity. Granted, seeing these species and others can be challenging, but throughout the year, I will be sharing specific locations with tips and strategies for how to get the most out of a wildlife-orient ed weekend or school break trip. We are very fortunate to live in one of the world’s most biodiverse areas. There are so many places within a few hours of Bangkok to escape to. My family usually get away every weekend if possible. And even on week days, we can often go to many of the more local areas that may even be considered inside the greater Bangkok metropolitan area. So much to do and see! I hope to en tice many of you to take advantage of these places and opportunities. I will focus on easy-to get to destinations and articles will appear at the best times for experienc ing these places. In this image selection, I have selected some of the more “golden ring” species that can be found in Thailand near us with a bit of luck and effort. While some are ac tually quite rare, Thailand’s conservation efforts have in many cases have increased the chances of encountering them these days compared to years ago. Enjoy!
