EMPATHY Empathy allows us to feel with and understand others. Empathy is the first step to having positive relationships because it helps us understand and relate to others. Re cently, when our visiting presenter, Dick Moore, spoke to the parents and students he shared with them Brené Brown’s excellent short video on what empathy is and why is it very different than sympathy. When you watch our children in Foundation Stage you can really see that they want to do things by themselves (even if that means they come home wearing an item of uniform backwards). When I ask a student to explain our mission to me, as stated in our guiding statements, often the answer I will get back is “fulfilling potential” which sums up our mission very well.
Likewise, if I ask, “What are our three values?” then I will rightly hear “Well-Being, Learning and Global Citi zenship.” But when I ask about our vision there tends to be a long pause! I therefore write to you today to cel ebrate Bangkok Patana’s vision. I do feel the four vision traits listed in our vision will help to give our students the life skills to thrive in school and beyond. “We develop global citizens who shape their world through independence, empathy, creativity and critical thinking.”

Research states that creativity is valuable in education because it builds cognitive complexity. Creativity relies on having deep knowledge and being able to use it ef fectively. Being creative involves using an existing set of knowledge or skills in a particular subject or context to experiment with new possibilities in the pursuit of valued outcomes, thus increasing both knowledge and skills.

CREATIVITY
Every June, the Academic Leadership Team work on the Development Plan for the following year. One very important area the Primary leadership team will be re viewing this year is the provision of ‘Creative Arts in Pri mary.’ Updates on their review will be shared during the year. Research also links creativity with the intrinsic moti vation to learn. Just thinking back to last June and seeing the Secondary students in action during their ‘Festival of Curiosity’ as they focused on their creative goal, they become more and more absorbed in their learning and more driven to acquire the skills they need to accomplish it. I am sure for those of you who know someone who loves making Tik Tok videos to showcase a particular skill you will see that they will spend hours working on their skill so that they can then share their Tik Tok video of their success.
Critical thinking is not confined to the classroom. We saw it in action last Friday at the CAS/CAT fair as the students spoke passionately about their cause and high lighted possible solutions that they wanted to work on this year. One of the by-products of critical thinking skills is the ability to analyse and look at problems in a crea tive and constructive method. Critical thinkers are invar iably good problem solvers. As a good critical thinker, we want our students to be able to separate facts from opinions and fiction and examine the issue from all an gles. Our Year 10 and 11 students will get plenty of op portunity to put their critical thinking skills into action in their new Global Citizenship lessons. As education has had to take on different forms in a world hit by COVID, it is extremely crucial for students to possess these critical thinking skills that will prepare them for their tomorrow. After all, our Patana students are the leaders of tomorrow.

2. Encourage free time. The IB programme is quite stressful, taxing and time consuming. It’s important for your child to take relax, socialise and to participate in activities outside of academics. Everything doesn’t have to be related to the university application process. En sure your child maintains a balance throughout the pro cess.3.Ask your child first. Grades, courses, standardised tests, universities and so on can become a major top ic during your child’s final year. Before you share your child’s university ambitions and academic information, ask them if they are okay with you divulging that infor mation to friends and relatives.
8. Manage your expectations and disappointment If your child is not admitted to their top choice, be there to support them and keep any personal disappointment that you may feel away from them. It’s important to con vey the message to your child that there are many good fit universities and disappointment is an inevitable part of the process.
4. Managing admin tasks. Helping your child keep track of deadlines, standardised tests and so on can be invaluable. Creating a calendar or to-do-list with your child can keep them on track and ahead of any chal lenges that they might face along the way.
Writing the application essay. It’s wonderful to have help with the application essay and your input is essential since you know your child extremely well. Hav ing said that, it’s best to ensure that your help doesn’t transform into writing the essay. Admissions officers read thousands of application essays and are well aware of how an 18-year-old sounds compared to a 53-yearold. You want your child’s voice to shine and come through in the application essay.

1. Let your child drive the process. Your child needs to determine which university and/or major they are in terested in applying to. You want to encourage inde pendent thinking and give them the opportunity to con trol the process. You may have university suggestions, which is completely fine, but make sure your child has a voice in making the final decision regarding where they want to apply.
5. Talk about financing. This is the number one issue that many students would love to hear more about from their parents, but they often don’t know where they stand, and they don’t know how to ask. Are there restrictions/ limitations based on the family circumstances? Will your child share in the financial responsibility? Make sure you address these questions sooner rather than later with your child.
6. Don’t rely on your own college experience. Things have changed since you were in university. Keep that in mind.7.
The process of applying to university is complex and has many layers to it. With students applying to different countries and educational systems, it can be overwhelming and more complex than when parents of today applied to university. Having said that, it can be challenging for parents to know how and when they can offer help. Here are some suggestions and tips for par ents to keep in mind when assisting their children in the university application process.
Journalism majors typically also complete an internship, which gives them practical, real-world experience and helps them grow their profes sional networks as they head into the workforce.

Ajournalism major is a practical field of study that trains students to research, report and communicate objectively for print, web or broadcast. A journalism curriculum typically includes a mix of classroom learning and hands-on experience to equip students with the knowledge and skills to move directly into the workforce after graduation. For instance, students learn how to turn an idea into a packaged story, complete with images or other multimedia elements.
Along with learning the basics of reporting and interviewing, students also de velop editing skills and learn how to adhere to the Associated Press Style book, which is the style guide commonly used by journalists.

Since the start of Tiger Cat rehearsals and our rec reational dance ECAs, the Dance Academy has been buzzing with electric energy and has lots in store this year- truly something for everyone to enjoy, support and partake in! The Academy hosted a Mini Dance Camp for Primary students in the second week of school and this weekend, our Big Cats, aka our Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, will be representing Bangkok Patana at ISB’s All-City Dance Convention!
Dance is back and starting with a bang in Block A with over 340 registrations. Thank you to the in credible 130 dancers who auditioned for our selective teams. Starting with this academic year our selective teams will be known as the Tiger Cats. We would also love to introduce the (first ever) Tiger Cats dance team Captain and Vice-Captain – Yeonsu Lee and Walan phat (Korkhao) Kiatphaibool – for the year.

A UK based composer, educator and vocal spe cialist, Lin has composed a vast array of songs for school-aged children to sing and perform and has many publications through Faber music.
Primary Music and Performing Arts
Much of her work is based in music education with organisations such as The Roy al Opera House and Glyndebourne Education. For the last five years, she has been working for the British Council as a World Voice Trainer in Jordan, Cyprus, Ethiopia and Lebanon. As a voice specialist, Lin works internationally running courses for teachers and students on singing, performance and composing skills. We are very excited to wel come Lin Marsh to Bangkok Patana later this month where she will work across the school leading singing in year groups, directing our Choral Festival (see poster opposite) and finally leading a Professional Development day open to music ed Youucators.can find out more about Lin’s work on Faber Music Website

This year is my last year in Primary, and I couldn’t wait for it to start. I had a new teacher, a new laptop, new school uniform and I was all geared up and ready to go! On the first day of school, I was grinning widely, and I felt like singing. I couldn’t help myself; I was just so excited. Unfortunately, the traffic was horren dous, because it was the first day of many schools.

So, the second the bus came to a stop, I jumped off and broke into a speed walk. I didn’t dare to run. I didn’t want to be caught breaking a school rule on the first day. I arrived later than usual, with only ten minutes until class starts. Thankfully, all my friends were al ready on the hardcourt, and we gave gifts from our summer holidays and exchanged jokes. We laughed until our bodies shook with mirth, it felt so good to reconnect with my friends once again! After chit-chatting with my friends for quite a while, the whistle blew. We all hustled into the build ing, and chatter and laughter filled the corridors. Our new teacher, Miss Isobel, greeted us warmly, and we did some bonding activities, games, and soon enough, it was break time. Full of energy, my friends and I raced across to the snack bar tables, and after some rapid munch ing, we began to talk some more, everybody join ing in, all of us having fun! When the whistle blew once more, we dithered on our way in to snatch a last word or two with our friends. Then, being the first day back, we were able to finish with another game. For our fourth lesson we did some writing about our summer holidays. Then it was time for us to go out to play and eat lunch! We played basketball with the boys and then hurried off to lunch. The food was yummy and delicious, and we all enjoyed it very much. After lunch, we had our final lesson of the day, and we made post-it note art! It was a fun and re laxing end-of-the-day activity, and I enjoyed it a lot. Finally, it was 2:30, and it was time to go home. On the way to the bus, I thought about how fun my first day of school was, and how my learning journey continued once more.

I know you are watching but what are you seeing?
I have been a parent for 26 months, which of course is the greatest gift I have been given and easily the most sleep-deprived. When not delivering our excellent Tiger cubs/Saturday programme or hosting/attending tourna ments, I have spent my fair share of time in weekend pur gatory - SOFT PLAY. During these momentous weekend jaunts “apparently” there are children everywhere, big ones, little ones, boisterous ones and quiet ones. Person ally, I have no idea, as I am constantly drawn to my child. I am watching everything but I am only seeing my child, not because I am choosing to but it’s a natural instinct. This rings true for parents at the side of football pitch es everywhere, of course, they are watching the game but often they are only seeing their child’s performance. Naturally, we are willing our offspring to be successful, we make allowances for areas of improvement while not seeing the performances of other players. As a coach, we cannot do that we have to remain impartial and just without discriminating or showing favouritism. We are watching AND seeing the WHOLE group. Therefore I would urge all of our parents to understand that we may not be offering the players what they want but we are trying to offer them what they need. Just treatment in

A meeting with parents and the player would ensue - heartbreakingly it was often a “release” discussion where we were dashing a young player's dream. I certainly do not miss those con versations but I could always sleep well knowing that we were impartial and just “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you might find, you get what you need”
