The Flavors of Maine, One Sip at a Time We, at Winterport Winery, Penobscot Bay Brewery, and Pairings want to celebrate this wonderful harvest season by participating in the Maine Harvest festival again this year. We are thrilled to join the talented producers of all the varied products this area has to offer. Maine wineries and breweries have been part of the best that Maine produces for many years. The wine and beermaking industries have encouraged the entrepreneurial spirit throughout the state and have enhanced the growing view of Maine as a place to enjoy top-notch food, wine, and beer year round. Since its beginning, the Maine Harvest Festival has been right on board to include this vital tie to the wine and beer industry. The Maine Winery Guild is pleased to endorse the Festival as a showcase that not only encourages food producers in the local area and across the state, but also provides a sampling opportunity for Maine F

He a rt o f M a ine sym p o siu m wines, meads, ciders, and beer during the event. Winterport Winery and Penobscot Bay Brewery will be there with wine and beer sampling from our varied line up of award-winning wines and tasty ales. The response last year was great and we expect nothing less for this year’s event! Many people who were not familiar with the Maine wine industry or the wine or beer trail became acquainted for the first time, and others stopped into the sampling area to continue their support of local wine and beer. There is a continuing view and growing understanding that supporting local businesses by buying local is how to keep Maine’s economy going, and what better way than to have this festival where you can see, sample, and shop local small businesses that most often use Maine products and certainly employ Maine people. The Maine Food Producers Alliance has endorsed the Maine Harvest Festival because the alliance’s focus is to build awareness and interest in growing the Maine food industry. They seek to encourage industry standards, to be a resource for new and growing food businesses, and to be a voice for the industry statewide. Many of the participating vendors in the 2012 Maine Harvest Festival are members of the Maine Food Producers Alliance and know that there’s strength in a united view and presence to keep up those standards in Maine. And there’s even more to the Maine Harvest Festival than sampling and shopping—there’s harvest cooking. There will be scheduled cooking demonstrations throughout the event where chefs, including those from Winterport Winery’s own Pairings, will be on hand for demos that are sure to encourage you in your harvest cooking and in healthy eating. The participating chefs will showcase the goodness of Maine from farm to table, from cook top to plate, with tasty treats that are from the bounty of Maine’s fields and gardens and present the local colors and flavors of Maine. So know that what you see, sample, and enjoy at the Maine Harvest Festival is from the best and varied parts of Maine’s harvest goodness that contributes to “the way life should be”.

Farm Fresh for ME Heart of Maine is proud to be an original sponsor of the Maine Harvest Festival, and we hope to be here for years to come. We are part of the national resource consesrvation and development network as a non-profit, 501c(3) organization serving Somerset, Penobscot, and Piscataquis Counties. Promoting, supporting, and encouraging the best of Maine’s sustainable small farm producers is what we do best. The Natural Resource Conservation and Development network was created by the federal government 50 years ago. Its purpose is to foster healthy economic development, like the sort of business endeavors that enhance the economic outlook for our population while enhancing the physical health of our environment and the people who live here. For the last 12 years, Heart of Maine has been pursuing that goal with deliberate attention to Maine agriculture. After all, where else do we have the opportunity to so easily live our

philosophy: healthy soil and water create the medium for a healthy food supply. We would like to see Maine farmers feed Maine. The day-long symposium at this year’s Festival entitled “We Can Feed Maine: Why We Should; How We Go About It,” is intended to bring that message home. The demand for local food is on the rise. At the same time, a sense of urgency is growing around the issue of a safe and sustainable food supply. People are beginning to feel uneasy at the thought of the tremendously long food supply lines we depend on to keep us alive. Fortunately, Maine has the capacity to feed itself. And we have a great environment to farm in. Mid-west farmers visiting here this past summer were taken aback at the size of our farms, compared to their typical 10,000 acre spreads. They were amazed at the amount of food we produce on our little places. And they were downright envious of our water supply. Heart of Maine is going to continue to push that message and has plans to launch, with the other four Resource Conservation and Development Areas in the state, a program to provide a road map to food self-sufficiency. There are many reasons why it makes sense: food security, the economic benefit of keeping our food dollars in state, saving our farms, a healthier food supply, and a healthier environment resulting. Taking control of our lives by making ourselves food self-sufficient on a state-wide level would be fun! We can’t think of a better reason to exert a lot of group effort, can you? —Paula Day, Chair Heart of Maine Resource Conservation and Development Area, Inc.

Down East’s Cookbook Authors Take to Festival Stage have you noticed how many times you hear the words “eat local” and “fresh, local ingredients” these days? When our group from Down East Magazine and Down East Books attended last year’s Maine Harvest Festival, we heard those words everywhere we went. It seemed to be the mantra of show vendors who were busily (and profitably) purveying their produce, nearly all of it harvested nearby. One had the feeling of being at a very large farmers’ market. Locally produced food seems somehow more authentic, more in tune with the Maine ideal. Buying local supports the local economy. And fresher is always better. H

Maine Harvest Festival

This dovetailed so well with the recent spate of cookbooks published by Down East Books, that we decided to bring a few of our cookbook authors to this year’s show. With titles like The Eat Local Cookbook and Maine Home Cooking, it seemed like a good match. It didn’t take long to convince six chef/authors to come to Bangor and demonstrate their creative cookery using recipes from their books. And, of course, fresh, local ingredients. It starts on Saturday, November 10th at 10:00 a.m. when Cynthia Finnemore Simonds will be on the Civic Center demo stage showing how Superb Maine Soups are scrumptious to sip and easy to make with easy-to-find ingredients. At 11:00 a.m., Kate Shaffer of Black Dinah Chocolatiers on Isle au Haut demystifies the magic of making chocolate delicacies from her book Desserted. At 1:00 p.m., watch Dana Moos, author of The Art of Breakfast, prepare a breakfast entrée that will have your family thinking they’re guests at a Maine B&B. Sunday at 11:00 a.m., Lisa Turner will bring us fresh produce from her Maine farm, and a recipe from her book The Eat Local Cookbook. At noon, we’ll have Sandra Oliver on stage with her new book, Maine Home Cooking, from which she will prepare one of the delights from her weekly recipe column, “Taste Buds” in the Bangor Daily News. Finally at 1:00 p.m., Tara Smith of Portland’s Standard Baking Co. will reveal some sweet secrets behind creating delicious pastries from her brand new book, Standard Baking Co. Pastries. Here’s the best part: free samples will be handed out at every event! And if you like what you see (and taste), personally autographed copies of all their cookbooks will be on sale for an hour following each demonstration at the Down East Books booth nearby. —Terry Bregy, Down East Books

colors ranging from lustrous bright white to black so deep that it appears blue, Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm located in Unity, Maine, and The Maine Alpaca Association are proud and excited to appear for the first time at the Maine Harvest Festival. Come join us as we share the results and experience of a bountiful fiber harvest from our 27 beautiful alpacas. Our Alpaca’s are shorn annually in Maine, typically in the month of May, before summer’s heat settles in for the season. The fiber J

is harvested with electric shears by a professional shearer with no harm coming to the animals and the result—a beautiful, versatile, luxurious fiber with a long length that lends itself to a tremendously wide range of products! The alpaca fiber industry has only been in the U.S. for about four decades, so we are still in the growing stages of this exciting livestock production. Alpacas thrive in Maine due to the climate, which is perfect for their transition from an extremely warm coat of fiber in the winter to being shorn to the skin in the summer. The Maine alpaca growers have worked together to begin fiber production projects on a larger scale, such as our first Maine Alpaca Blanket produced from alpaca farms contributing fiber from across the State of Maine. Alpaca fiber offers our state a wonderful opportunity to grow the textile industry, from small mini mills to much larger operations. At the Maine Harvest Festival we will be demonstrating fiber production such as picking, carding, and felting. Robin Fowler, owner of Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm and the President of the Maine Alpaca Association, will demonstrate using a spinning wheel, turning the roving into homespun yarn. We will be offering alpaca merchandise for sale for all members of the family, including yarn, roving, socks, hats, mittens, scarves, blankets and much, much more! An Alpaca 101 seminar will be offered on Sunday in the Civic Center, covering topics from the history of alpacas, husbandry, uses of the fiber, investment opportunities, and more. This is a great opportunity for anyone to learn more about these beautiful, gentle creatures and the amazing qualities associated with their fiber. Check the schedule for times and don’t miss this exciting event!

Better Living Through Healthy Eating We all strive to eat healthier ,

whether it’s to help lose weight, improve our cholesterol numbers, reduce our risk of heart disease, or to simply feel better. The benefits are endless, and with a wealth of farmers markets, vegetable stands, and harvest fairs conveniently available, it’s not hard to find fresh, local food. St. Joseph Healthcare is proud to sponsor the Maine Harvest Festival again this year, and support local farmers and food suppliers. Did you know most produce in the supermarket is picked four to seven days before it reaches the shelf and travels hundreds of miles?

All those miles, time, handling, preservatives, waxes, and temperature changes can affect the nutritional value of your fruits and veggies. The Maine Harvest Festival is an excellent opportunity to speak with local farmers and food makers about their products and discover how they are produced. Home-grown and home-made products tend to be less processed, contain fewer preservatives, and pack a better nutritional punch. Stop by the St. Joseph Healthcare booth to learn more ways to eat healthy and target your specific health concerns. Here’s a preview: • Concerned about kidney stones or bone loss? Try fruits and vegetables rich in potassium such as bananas, prunes, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and orange juice. Potassium can also help you maintain a healthy blood pressure. · Most of us could use more fiber in our diet. Fiber helps with a variety of gastrointestinal problems such as constipation, not to mention helps reduce your risk of coronary heart disease and makes you feel full with fewer calories. Great options include whole wheat bread and pasta, bran cereal, oatmeal, and nuts. Whole fruits and veggies like avocados, oranges, pears, bananas, beans, and carrots are also high in fiber. · Vitamin C helps grow and repair all body tissue, heal cuts and wounds, and keep your teeth and gums healthy. Red peppers, broccoli, berries, spinach, melon, and citrus fruit are all high in Vitamin C. Stop by our booth display near the Auditorium Floor Entrance for all this and more. We’ll also feature our St. Joseph Hospital Chef Dennis McCartney, back with a whole new set of recipes to sample. Chef Dennis will be offering ongoing cooking demonstrations at the booth, answering questions and offering samples of easyto-make recipes using locally available produce. And you can take the recipes home to try! Maine Harvest Festival
