Chairman's Report
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT JOHN MURRAY OAM, CHAIRMAN
Welcome to the Spring edition of InTouch magazine which also marks the beginning of new era in the 60-year history of Bankstown Sports Club. I’d like to start with the opening of the Flinders Centre, a new milestone and landmark in the heart of our community.
FLINDERS CENTRE
CLUBGRANTS
MAYOR’S CHARITY BALL
The new Flinders Centre is a state-of-the-art office tower that is filling up with a variety of first-class tenants, including three banks, a fitness centre and early learning childcare centre. It’s important that we focus on these nine storeys of prime real estate, which adds to our existing restaurants, a new cafe and eight-storey hotel complex. By diversifying, we rely less on gaming and more on building the entire precinct into a multi-dimensional one, a venue that will grow as Bankstown grows. It’s part of a very long vision which dates back almost 20 years. While that Master Plan has changed with the times, the Board is currently working on what to offer over the next 20 years.
While we have a statutory obligation to put funds back into the community under the ClubGRANTS scheme, the Board has always put more back into the community than we are required to. It’s not about bragging, or trying to big-note ourselves, the Board has always decided to kick in a bit more than we need to, whether it’s for aged care or childcare or sporting organisations or any other worthy cause. We’ve always found a bit more money for a deserving cause, somewhere, somehow. That’s how we are.
We are happy to once again host the annual Mayoral Charity Dinner. Held on 17 August, the funds raised this year are going to the Steve Waugh Foundation. The Foundation supports children and young adults with rare diseases by helping them live a better quality of life with grants for medicine, special equipment and treatment, and camps designed to support them and their families. The former Australian Test Cricket captain is also a local hero – he played cricket for Panania and often stood at the crease at Bankstown Oval. Anyone who has played at any sporting facility at Bankstown has always been impressed with how Council has maintained the facilities and sporting fields, especially our oval which has seen great athletes including likes of Len Pascoe and the Waugh twins, Stephen and Mark, play there.
60 YEARS YOUNG While I have been Chairman for 12 years, with 37 years on the Board, it’s sometimes good to reflect on what the club was like back in the day when you see where it is now. Back then, the club was in an old hall which used to be owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints. It was a small building and we couldn’t afford much, and I’m sure you’ve read this before, but our first “fridge” was the old baptismal font. We used to pack it with big blocks of ice and put our big long necks of beer in there to keep them cold. I’ve been fortunate enough to sit on the Board with each CEO the club has ever had, and there has only been three of them, with our current CEO Mark Condi being the latest. All Board members remain as volunteers, as it was from the start. But from our first paid employee, we now have over 600, and they are some of the best staff around. We keep getting better and we have plenty of ideas, so we will keep on growing.
WELFARE REPORT September, October and November 2018
INVICTUS GAMES It will be Game On Down Under when we welcome Invictus Games competitors and their family and friends from 20-27 October. ClubsNSW is not only a partner but a great supporter of the Games and I am a great supporter too, as is Bankstown Sports. Sport is in our charter, so naturally that’s why the Invictus Games are important to us. The Games will feature competition in 11 sports across Greater Sydney, including Olympic Park and Sydney Harbour. We will be financially supporting the Games program which will see Sydney hosting more than 500 competitors and about 1000 family and friends over the eight-day event. So far many Bankstown Sports staff have been generous in putting their names forward to volunteer for the Invictus Games Sydney. We look forward to contributing more to this event which raises awareness for the programs and services offered to ex-servicemen and women and those still serving. Being a great supporter of sports, as we are, Canterbury-Bankstown Council is also supporting the Invictus Games. I think it’s going to be brilliant.
CARPARKING VALIDATION While we have 1200 car parks in our secure underground space, we need to change the carpark validation to 24 hours, as we want the spaces to be available for people who are using the club. So, when you are visiting the club, you will now need to hand your parking ticket to staff for it to be validated. This will help keep the carpark as a place for those who are using the club's facilities.
GETTING SOCIAL As this is the Spring issue that also means a refresh for some of our restaurant menus, having a knees up during our Oktoberfest celebrations and booking your table for Melbourne Cup Day. I hope to see you in the club sometime soon.
We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of members who have recently passed away: Robert Sayers (Foundation Member), Les Mcneilly (Foundation Member), Kenneth Swan, Pamela Cohen, Johanna Filipian, Shirley Hewitt, Kenneth Cook, John Holmes, Leslie Holton, John Hemming, Norma Turns, Ronald English, Maria Calcagno, Robert Borg, Stanley Tibbey, Carole Cooper, John McWhinney, Wilhelm Hrazdil, Mavis Hamilton and Anna Kassabian. The following member was reported as being in hospital and on behalf of our President, Directors and all our members we wish them a speedy recovery: Geoffrey Flint.

Celebrating
OUR DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY As much as the 60th Anniversary of Bankstown Sports is about remembering where we have come from, it’s also about where we are going. A 60th anniversary is usually represented by a diamond, so we would like to share with you the many amazing facets that this fabulous club has added over the past six decades, plus tell you a bit more about the new ones being worked on.

HISTORY
We are delighted to be celebrating our Diamond anniversary as a club and community leader, and we look forward to sharing the next 60 years with you.
In February 1958, the Bankstown District Cricket Association passed a motion to meet with other interested sporting bodies about forming a district sporting club to provide off-field amenities and support for local sports men and women. Members had to be male, over 21 and play sport. Number 8, Greenfield Parade, was purchased the same year as the site for the new club. While we may have come from humble origins – formed in an old Latter-Day Saints Hall – the original rough and ready weatherboard club was a constant work in progress. As it was still a consecrated church, you couldn’t smoke in the old building, but the baptismal font proved a handy esky. Later, the club obtained its licence and was officially named Bankstown

our way, particularly in sport, and we are now stronger than ever.
In the 60 years since 1958, the club’s Executives have never stood still, constantly improving the facilities beginning as early as 1961 on a new building with the latest phase being the opening of the A-Grade Flinders Centre, which is targeting a five-star NABERS rating. While today there are in excess of 600 employees across six venues, the Board and Executive has remained a constant, with
only three secretary managers/CEOs across that long history, founding secretary manager Emile McDonald (1958-1980), John Mackay (1981-2012) and current CEO Mark Condi, who has worked at the club for over 25 years, beginning his career picking up glasses and cleaning tables. While there has been consistency in leadership, that has not meant the club has stood still. Along with the Board, the Executive team has worked constantly to achieve the best for the club and its patrons. That includes developing and updating a 20-year Master Plan that has added much diversity to the club, from a not-to-be-matched dining precinct and movie theatre to a 162-room hotel and the state-ofthe-art Flinders Centre. In the 60 years of the club’s existence we have never really lost

FOOD AND BEVERAGE Patrons were thrilled when the first bistro opened in the club in the 1960s, offering hamburgers and sandwiches and one daily special. Imagine what they would think today of the 10 restaurants, plus all the bars, including the hugely successful Brewhouse, and the addition of our new contemporary café, Cornerstone Coffee & Kitchen. But there has been a lot in between. From the original fryers and grillers which melted the chocolates next to the change box, to the Atrium Bar and game-changing restaurant Platform One and La Piazza which have clocked up a decade of service, Bankstown

Sports has been a leader in club food and beverage. It’s fair to say our club now rivals any food precinct in what it has to offer, from the casual Asian offering at Lucky Cheng’s to the burger bar offerings at Brewhouse, and the stylish Cornerstone Coffee & Kitchen, the food offerings at Bankstown Sports are constantly evolving to accommodate an increasingly aware and knowledgeable customer. The next level in Sydney bar offerings, literally, will be the rooftop bar that will cap off Flinders Centre. Due to open next year, we are working with the industry’s best in designing a contemporary space that will be the new pinnacle of the Bankstown skyline, with panoramic views, and contemporary bar food and cocktails enjoyed in a modern space.

ENTERTAINMENT In the early years, after a hard day on the sporting field, members could come back and relax and enjoy a middie and a dabble on one of the 10 pokies then head home, spruce up and return for the Saturday Night Dance which was a social highlight of the week. Around 1969, the new auditorium, dining room and Chess Bar were completed and they were the height of sophistication. The club was becoming a talked-about hub for entertainment, with acts coming from far and wide – even overseas – to perform at Bankstown Sports. Stage shows such as Jesus Christ Superstar were performed to large audiences. By the mid 90s tribute Bands and “imitation” performers were flourishing and filling seats at the theatre. And in 2009, large local gatherings were being accommodated in
The Grand Ballroom. Today, the gamers haven and unique social escape – Platform Zero Esports – or PZE – is the changing face of sport, with the creation of the club’s own console and PC-based gaming brand launched in 2017. The club now runs weekly tournaments in the dedicated PZE Bar, where keen gamers come and test their skills against each other. There’s also plenty of opportunity for free play where those who dabble socially in gaming can come an utilise the top-line facilities. But that doesn’t mean we have forgotten our younger fans, with the climbing frames of Monkey Mania and more challenging Turbo Climb now being part of the club, although the latter is also proving popular for corporate team-building exercises also. Flinders Centre Bankstown has added another huge facet to our entertainment offering, as it

Editorial SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY While some of the issues faced in the 1970s including the ban on thongs and a question over the length of hair may now seem trivial, more pressing issues that we face today include our stance on responsible gaming and offering club support for those in the community who need our help. Bankstown Sports Club’s mission statement is ‘Making a difference for our Community’. This sentiment is at the heart of everything we do at the club, and acts as a guide for our daily operations and business decisions. Under government legislation, all large clubs must invest a minimum of 2.25 per cent of their annual gaming revenue back into the community. This is part of the ClubGRANTS scheme. Bankstown Sports has always exceeded this figure and on average, we have contributed over 4 per cent each year to local community organisations. From 1959 to 2018, the club has contributed over $47.6 million to local sporting and community groups, with almost 50% of these funds donated directly to local grass roots sporting clubs to assist with registrations, ground hire and uniforms. More than $23 million of this has been in donations and another $20 million has been on sports expenditure. In addition, we are also key partner, along with ClubsNSW, in supporting research by the University of Sydney in mitigating the impact of problem gambling in the community.
SPORTS CHARTER
Over the years, Bankstown Sports has amalgamated with numerous clubs in need of financial assistance and support. While some were in dire straits, we have helped others survive and prosper, and the club executive has learned new lessons every time it has been approached or become involved in an amalgamation. They include taking over the management and operations of Bankstown Yagoona Bowling Club in 1983, until its closure in 2003. In 2013, the club assisted the Revesby Heights Ex-Servicemen’s Memorial Club to
close with dignity, taking over all financial debts, guaranteeing jobs for all of its employees and carrying out their planned ANZAC Day commemorations for that year, without any disruptions. In the success stories, Bankstown Sports amalgamated with Baulkham Hills Sports in 1999, and in 2008 it brought Bankstown Sports Bowls under its wing, while in 2011 Birrong Sports joined the family. Today, all three clubs remain part of the Bankstown Sports Group and are prospering. More recently, in 2017, Bankstown Sports amalgamated with The Acres Club, (formerly known as Greenacre Bowling Club), and in December 2017 it took control of operations at Auburn Tennis and Recreation Club. We have invested a lot in the clubs and are seeing the magnitude of benefits for the community.

AMALGAMATIONS
The club’s original 1958 charter was to support and foster sport, with all members and their children to be actively involved in sport in order to join. Fast-forward to 2018, and Bankstown Sports now supports more than 40 associated sporting clubs in the Bankstown, Birrong, Baulkham Hills, Greenacre and Auburn areas, which are all volunteer run and cater for recreational, social and competitive sports for over 7500 juniors and senior participants. While Bankstown Sports is a family-friendly community club delivering entertainment and dining to members and guests, to this day we stay true to our obligations to support local grass roots junior sport but also provide financial support to broader community projects. Over the years, Bankstown Sports has harvested some incredible sporting talent, producing several Olympians and other well-known athletes.

Talking the talk... Spoken word poetry, saying no to violence, youth skills and equipment upgrades all benefit from ClubGRANTS. Each year through ClubGRANTS, clubs across NSW provide support to thousands of community organisations, sporting groups and charities in their local areas, with more than $1 billion in funding contributed since the program began. Bankstown Sports, and the associated venues, contribute funds directly to organisations, as well as contributing to three different ClubGRANTS committees. The committees are run by the respective local councils, Canterbury-Bankstown, The Hills Shire and Cumberland. Take a look at some of our successful applicants:
BANKSTOWN POETRY SLAM – Real Talk Real Talk is an award-winning spoken word poetry program designed and implemented by Bankstown Poetry Slam. It is a free six-week workshop, involving a poet mentoring year 10 students from high schools and helping them write and perform their own creative poetry piece. The program allows space for teenagers to talk about “real” things, for example identity, racism and bullying. Six schools across Western Sydney have already confirmed they would like to participate again this year, four of which are in the Canterbury-Bankstown region.
THE GREENACRE COMMUNITY CENTRE – Canterbury Bankstown says NO to Domestic Violence This project aims to build on the success of the recently launched Canterbury Bankstown Says NO to Domestic Violence campaign by addressing other forms of abuse including, financial, sexual and elder abuse. In the last three months of the campaign, the project will develop and run community education workshops on healthy relationships that aim to highlight what these relationships look like and equip participants with knowledge and skills to assist them to build resilience and capacity to maintain them. 8

CREATING LINKS – Chilled Chilled is an evidence-based skills treatment program that helps young people develop skills and strategies to better manage symptoms of anxiety, increase self-confidence, enhance individual resilience and develop effective coping skills. Operating from several high schools within the Canterbury Bankstown Local Government Area (LGA), there will be two group workshops, each consisting of seven weekly two-hour sessions, with a focus on understanding thoughts, feelings and behaviours and providing young people with more adaptive strategies.
ST JOHN’S AMBULANCE – Hills Shire equipment upgrade This will support young people in developing first aid skills, provide community first aid services, and earn proficiency badges and awards through The North Rocks Cadet Division, one of 80 divisions within St John's Ambulance Australia NSW. These young volunteers learn first aid, skills in communication, teamwork and leadership. Once they complete training, they attend first aid duties in the Hills Shire region under the supervision of a St John Adult Officer or Leader. This program also offers various excursions and camps for juniors and cadets both interstate and overseas.
ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION PROGRAM – RYDA The RYDA road safety education program is an evidence-based workshop that engages with high school students in a series of interactive sessions, conducted by trained facilitators, including local Police. RYDA gives students critical information and strategies that do not come from driving lessons, books or the school classroom. The RYDA Program is one of the many road safety initiatives that have contributed to a reduction in the number of young people killed in road crashes – a drop of more than 40 per cent in the past decade. To date more than 500,000 senior high school students have attended RYDA.

BMW 118i competition went
down TO THE WIRE There was plenty of cash, but just one luxury car to win at the recent ‘What’s In The Box?’ promotion. Bankstown Sports was buzzing with anticipation on the night of 10 August as keen members arrived, hoping they would be leaving as the lucky new owner of a BMW 118i. The draw went down to the wire, with the last two boxes deciding who would be going home as the winner of a new car.
HOW THE NIGHT ROLLED OUT Prior to the final draw, nine finalists were secured over nine weeks, and a remaining three spots were chosen on the night. Patrons began arriving in the early afternoon, ready to swipe their membership cards for one last chance to share in the prizes. 12

The nine finalists also arrived early, well before 7pm, keen to ensure they registered their presence to stake their claim! The three remaining finalist spots were drawn at 7pm, 7.30pm and 8pm. At 7pm the barrel – containing three hours’ worth of tickets – was spun and finalist No. 10 was announced, with long-term member K. Yeung quickly pacing through the Rainforest Lounge to claim his place in the final box selection. Finalist 11, J. Villaroman, was called at 7.30pm. Almost instantly, a beaming Mr Villaroman emerged from the Rainforest Lounge crowd, to claim the second-last finalist position.

Last but not least was finalist No. 12, V. Georgas, who was so thrilled to have made the final cut in the 8pm draw. Affectionally known as, Bill, he stated he’d never won anything in 35 years at the club and was elated to have won a spot in the final box selection. Then with all 12 finalists drawn, it was time to select numbers. D. Mihaljevic was the first finalist to select her box, as she was the finalist winner from week 1 of the ‘What’s in the Box?’ promotion. She selected box No. 12 and couldn’t wait to find out what was in the box! Next Y. Wiyladi, finalist from week 2, emerged from the crowd and quietly selected box No. 7. Week 6 winner C. Werner was so confident in her selection as she shouted out No. 3, and X. Nguyen picked No. 10 based on his birthday month. And on went the remaining selections until all 12 boxes were allocated as finalists took their position on the main stage in the Rainforest Lounge, behind their selected boxes which were opened in numerical order, Initially, it was a tense enough when boxes
1, 2 and 3 were opened, revealing cash prizes. Then cash kept coming out in boxes 5, 6, 7 and 8. While all patrons were thrilled with their cash, the suspense was building as everyone waited in anticipation to see what was in the final boxes, and to find out who would be driving home in the shiny, new BMW 118i. Boxes 9 and 10 revealed more cash! So, it down to the last boxes – 11 and 12. J. Villaroman had box No. 11 and as the 11th finalist, had only been chosen that night. Meanwhile, D. Mihaljevic had box No. 12, but was a finalist from week one, so she’d been lucky right from the start! In the end, Mr Villaroman was ecstatic, lifting the lid of box 11 to reveal the gold prize card with BMW 118i written on it which meant he was the new owner of the luxury car. He was so happy to share the fantastic moment with his wife, who eagerly watched on in the Rainforest Lounge. What had started as a relatively normal night out for the pair had now turned into a memorable one. The Villaromans were also
well overdue for an upgrade, as the BMW 118i will replacing a 2000 model car! D. Mihaljevic did not go home empty handed, either, winning the highest cash prize of the night – $3,000 – stashed away in box No. 12.
WHAT’S NEXT? After the excitement of the What’s in the Box? Promotion, we have started the Mystery Briefcase promotion where the winner could win a BMW X1 sDrive 18i. The promotion runs the same as What’s in the Box promotion with 9 finalists in the lead up and 3 to be found on the final draw night on Thursday 18 October. For the weekly draws, you can enter by swiping your membership card every 4 hours of every day. The draws are every Thursday from 7.45pm – and weekly winners not only secure their spot early but also take $1000 cash home on the night of their win. For the final draw, swipe your membership card from 4pm to enter and the finalist draws will be at 7pm, 7.30pm and 8pm. Find out more by visiting BankstownSports.com
WEDNESDAY MEMBERS’ DRAW Bankstown Sports has more exciting promotions to offer including our Members’ Draws every Wednesday night. Every week there is a draw out of all current members and the cash jackpots, every draw if it isn’t won. Overall, Bankstown Sports Members’ Draws’ prize money is over $50,000 for winners to share in.
about her history at Bankstown Sports. Anna had fond memories of Bankstown Sports coming with her husband Jerry, a highlight was when he won a Ford BA XR6 in 2003. Jerry, passed away in 2016 but that didn’t stop Anna visiting a place that had so many great memories of her and her husband.
Our Members’ Draw is all about members being in the club when their membership number is drawn. Sometimes the Members’ Draw jackpot goes all the way to the final draw night without being won, and other times, our lucky members are present in the lead up and they win the cash.
Unfortunately, Anna herself passed away only weeks after winning the $32,000 jackpot. The family called to give the news but were happy that one of her last visits to Bankstown Sports was such a memorable one for her. Her son Barney recalls, “Mum and Dad would meet up with some of their friends regularly on Wednesdays. Sometimes they shared a meal together, sometimes just coffee and cakes,” he says. Bankstown Sports sends their sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of Anna Kassabian.
Our most recent Members’ Draw, Cash is Climbing was one of these situations. Our jackpot went off early with Anna Kassabian (pictured above) winning $32,000 before the final draw night. She had a smile ear to ear and was so pleased to hear her membership number whilst she was with friends at Bankstown Sports that Wednesday night. Speaking with Anna after her win she told us
As part of this members’ draw, we also had 4 lucky winners win a share of $13,000 on the final draw night. Keep up to date with our members’ draws at BankstownSports.com Bankstown Sports InTouch

Carpark validation
THE KEY TO A QUICK PARK Our secure carpark is a facility for those utilising the Club. The continuing expansion of Bankstown Sports as a retail, community and commercial hub, including the completion of our own recently-opened Flinders Centre, means carparking is at a premium. While we have 1,200 spaces in our secure underground car park, we need to keep it as a place for those who are utilising club facilities.
CARPARK VALIDATION We are moving from a “before 10am validation to 24-hour validation. That means when you are next visiting the club, you will need to hand your parking ticket to a staff member for it to be validated before you exit the building, no matter what time you enter. We see the importance of car spaces and we want to make sure as best as we can that they are available for patrons to utilise.
LIFTS We have also been making some changes regarding access to the carpark, with a new lifts connecting the underground space to our new Restwell Street Foyer as part of Flinders Centre. We also have wheelchair spaces located on the green level. Lift access to the foyer is also available on the two existing levels, close to the Mona Street entrance, and we have just opened two new lifts closer to the Greenfield entrance of the carpark where every colour level of the carpark has a lift which is pram-friendly.
CARWASH Other facilities to take advantage of include the Carwash located on green level of the carpark. Next time you visit Bankstown Sports, drop your car off and choose from a range of packages to suit your needs including standard, deluxe and executive washes, as well as interior and exterior detailing. There are also a range of discounts offered to Bankstown Sports Club members. Hours are Monday to Thursday, 8am-5pm; Friday and Saturday, 8am-9pm; and Sunday, 9am-5pm.
VALET Every Friday and Saturday from 6pm, simply drive up the ramp to the entrance of the club and park in the designated Valet Service Area. Our attendants will greet you and issue you with a claim ticket in exchange for your keys and will park your car securely for just $10 for Members. When you wish to leave the club, hand your claim ticket to the attendant at the Mona Street entrance and they will collect your car for you.
FREE VALET PARKING WITH CARWASH Valet parking is free if you decide to have your car washed at our Club Carwash after 6pm on Friday and Saturday nights and pick-up before 11pm. Bankstown Sports InTouch

Flinders Centre
SETS SCENE FOR GROWTH The new nine-storey office tower is unmatched in what it offers to tenants. Flinders Centre Bankstown is fast becoming the focal point for the area with tenants now starting to fill the club’s state-of-the-art nine-storey, sustainable A-grade office tower. With the main entrance at 25 Restwell Street now open, Flinders Centre is within easy walking distance of Bankstown’s retail centre and all of its transport interchanges. And with upgrades to the Bankstown train line, as part of the Sydney Metro project, commuters from Central Railway Station will soon arrive at Bankstown Station in just 28 minutes. So, while much focus is on Parramatta, North Ryde and Homebush those companies taking up space at Flinders Centre will benefit in the long-term. So far 45 percent of Flinders Centre has been leased. “In terms of what we have achieved so far, I am very comfortable,” CEO Mark Condi says. UFC Gym Bankstown and ANZ Business have moved in, as well as St George Business, and also signed is a software development company. Flinders Centre is also on the verge of securing an orthodontist, accounting firm
and a medical centre, while on the ground floor expect to see Unity Bank and a real estate agent. “I am really pleased where we’re sitting at the moment,” Mark says. “Obviously, I am passionate about Bankstown and the reason why we are doing this commercial development is that Bankstown has almost everything else, but the one thing it lacked was an A-Grade commercial space.” The five-star NABERS green-star rating Flinders Centre is also targeting will also be unmatched in terms of what it has to offer tenants and the guests who they will bring along to use the facilities. In addition to top-quality tenants, Flinders Centre will eventually have a rooftop bar, an early learning centre – supported by the adjacent conference facilities which can hold 3000 people, accommodated Travelodge Hotel Bankstown, which will soon be expanded with two more floors. “As far as I am concerned there is no building, anywhere in Sydney, that has this
type of commercial space with the facilities that surround it, on the same footprint,” Mark says of the Flinders Centre. “There is no need to walk out the door once you are in.” As part of the club’s 20-year Master Plan, Flinders Centre is the result of the Board’s long-term view that Bankstown Sports will continue to be a key community asset for many years to come. “The benefit for us is that not only will Flinders Centre make its own money – and it’s a great investment in its own right – but we will have 1500 people in that building eventually, on any working day, Monday to Friday, who will hopefully use our hotel, our conference facilities, our restaurants. And rather than fly out of the door to get lunch or coffee or go to the gym, now hopefully they will turn right and walk straight into Bankstown Sports, which is all part of it,” Mark says. “There is not one other building around that I know of that has all that within the same precinct.” Bankstown Sports InTouch

Cheer on Invictus
SUPER HEROES It'll be game on down under as Bankstown Sports is among those welcoming competitors, their family and friends when they descend on Sydney for the Invictus Games 2018 from 20-27 October. Bankstown Sports is just one club helping support more than 500 competitors and 1000 supporters over the eight-day event which will take place at venues throughout Sydney. The Invictus Games 2018 features 11 sports with events being held across the Greater Sydney area, including Sydney Olympic Park and on and around Sydney Harbour. “With Bankstown Sports foundation as a sporting club, the Invictus Games is a natural fit for Bankstown Sports,” says CEO Mark Condi.
“But the Invictus Games represents more than just a sporting event – it is a celebration of the achievement, determination and resilience of those returned servicemen and women.” While Bankstown Sports has supported Invictus Games with a $50,000 contribution, we also celebrated the athletes on Fly the Flag Day (17 August), where the Invictus Games flag was flown at Bankstown Sports, and a Bankstown Sports team climbed the Harbour Bridge along with two Invictus athletes. Invictus Games will also be televised in Bankstown Sports venues throughout the duration of the Games. “ClubsNSW is a major partner and as a proud sporting club, Bankstown Sports was more than happy to make a financial contribution to the success of the Games,” Mark Condi said. Invictus Games Sydney 2018 provides an opportunity for long-term impact for the defence community through raising awareness of programs and services in the areas of education, health and wellbeing, employment and adaptive sport. It encourages greater collaboration and co-operation amongst the ex-service and serving community across the generations.
Invictus Games Sydney 2018 CEO Patrick Kidd OBE hopes to see as many Australians there as possible.
A fantastic way to ‘Make Your Mark’ is to attend the Games in October and cheer on our Invictus Games Sydney competitors loudly and proudly from the stands.
“This is a moment in time for us to all come together as a nation and actively demonstrate our support for our defence community,” says Kidd, who

served in both the British and Australian Armed Forces. “Don’t miss your chance to be inspired by unconquerable spirit and entertained by eight days of fierce competition. Be there to let our wounded warriors know you’re behind them.”

Stories to be told and...
SOMEONE TO TELL THEM TO While our contribution to the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 helps embrace our wounded, injured or ill veterans, serving defence personnel and the family and friends who support them, it is also important that we support all members of our community. While the spirit of mateship shines with the Games, it’s good to know Bankstown Sports has a Salvation Army Club-based chaplain Shane Mount. Shane provides support, advice and encouragement to our staff and patrons about issues such as stress and anxiety, physical and mental health, bereavement and family. But it's not all bad news as he is able to share some good stories with them too. “There are many, many stories in the club,” says Shane who lends a confidential ear while strolling through the club or perched having a flat white at his favourite venue, Cornerstone Coffee & Kitchen. “While I hear mostly about the worst things in their lives, I also hear them at their best which is the most pleasant thing,” he says.
Since Shane started on his five-day-a-week rounds, he has found the level of engagement has increased. “Everybody at the Club is so warm towards me. I usually say a friendly hello to everybody I see and people will stop me and talk to me as I walk by. I try to say hello to as many people as I can. I've always got an ear for anybody to talk to.” Shane is committed to meeting with people to provide practical, emotional and spiritual support in times of need, and can offer guidance and counselling support, companionship, pastoral care and local referrals. “Bankstown Sports has been on the front foot in making sure I am getting the full support, not just from the staff and management but everybody throughout the club,” he says. “When a person is having trouble in life – gambling, drinking or death in the family – they know they can call me straight away.”
Shane also likes to connect those who in the community who are becoming increasingly isolated. “I'm catching the lonely people coming into the club,” he says. “Our club is a very social thing, it’s the centre of Bankstown. People come in the door, and it's an escape from the outside. I hook up lonely people, or isolated people, which is particularly true for older women, and I'll point them in the right direction to a group or activity. “Once they get involved in these groups, they have friends for life.” While Shane works Monday to Friday at Bankstown Sports, he also visits our associated venues where he is available to talk to members and guests throughout the clubs including the bowls clubs, Legacy, and sporting clubs. This is a free and completely confidential service offered to all patrons of Bankstown Sports Club. Shane is also available for phone or face-to-face meetings at the club. Contact him on 9722 9888 or via shane.mount@aue.salvationarmy.org Shane is located in the Gasser office, next to the Theatre. WHAT'S ON FOR
Old friends love their annual flutter and catch-up at Platform One, Bankstown Sports, the best place to be for a race that stops a nation. Despite living at opposite ends of Sydney, Ron Jordan and business partner Helen Wood will be heading to Bankstown Sports on Melbourne Cup Day, just as they have done for the past 20 years. “Ron and I are business partners and we have been friends for 25 years, it’s a day for us to let our hair down,” says Helen who is 72 and still working seven days a week but travels from her Kellyville home for the event. “We get all dressed up, I have a nice hat, good dress and sexy shoes. “To us it’s a really fun day and it’s something we book a year ahead.” Ron, who turns 84 this year, still runs his business Sports Data Services, and visits every year for “the race that stops a nation”. Even though they have been friends for decades, there is still healthy competition when it comes to picking a winner on the big screen. “I don’t follow the horses. I’m not a big gambler,” says Ron. “But it’s a day out and I meet Helen there and we go into the railway carriages at Platform One and go through until 3pm, then after Cup until about 5pm.
she is a winner in the long term, “although Ron would probably tell you otherwise”. This year Platform One again offers a Melbourne Cup High Tea ($64 adults; $29 children 3-13 years), which includes finger sandwiches, scones with jam, assorted sweets and delicious cakes, offered with a selection of fine teas. There will also be a chocolate fountain and lolly buffet, plus a TAB, sweeps and prizes throughout the event. Over at Stuzzichino race fans will be served three courses ($70 per person), which includes a glass of sparkling wine on arrival. The menu features an array of fine Italian food, from Beef Carpaccio to slow-cooked Gippsland Lamb and classic desserts, including Tiramisu. All restaurant bookings are essential, call 9722 9888. In the Rainforest Lounge, there is free live entertainment from 10:30am, with highlights including a Fashion Parade, the Felicity Robinson Duo, Let’s Groove Tonight and after the big race a Raffle.
“I usually look in the newspaper and follow the tips. The year before last I backed the winner and I won $400. I backed it for a win and place.” Both enjoy buying sweeps tickets for their children and grandchildren, with Helen saying Bankstown Sports InTouch

S H AK E S I T U P " While the Basement Brewhouse is already one of Sydney’s most unique craft beer destinations, it is also gaining quite the reputation for its clever cocktails – as well as the adult shakes, dubbed Boozy Shakes.
The venue, which opened in 2016, hits all the rights marks for those looking for a point of difference in dining and drinking. Despite the name, the Brewhouse isn’t just about great-tasting craft beers, there is also a selection of tapped and bottled wines. And now cocktails have come into their own in a venue that appeals to an audience broader than just seasoned craft brew fans. The venue’s range of Boozy Shakes combines your favourite spirits and liqueurs with some delicious shake flavours for the ultimate indulgence. There’s Salted Caramel Tequila Shake, a Kahlua Cookies & Cream Shake, a Hokey Pokey Baileys Shake and the Classic Kraken Black Rum Chocolate Shake – all just $13 each. If you are not that adventurous, the Brewhouse also offers more traditonal Aperol Spritz, Classic Mojito, the rum-based Dark & Stormy or the sweet and tropical Fruit Bowl
for $17, while a shared English classic Pimms Carafe will set you back just $23. “We wanted a venue that was new and completely unique to the Bankstown area. Something that had never been done before,” Bankstown Sports Club CEO Mark Condi says. “A destination bar that would have something for everyone. And we think that’s exactly what the Brewhouse offers.” When it comes to entertainment, Basement Brewhouse has a DJ playing a mix of music every Friday and Saturday night, and Mark says they also have the ability to screen all major TV and sporting events, as well as weekly games.
there’s our private barrels which have smaller flat-screen TVs and can seat about eight adults, for those wanting to get a group of friends together to watch a particular game or show. “Each of these TVs has individual controls, meaning our guests can watch whatever they like.” Basement Brewhouse is open from 11am-late everyday. The kitchen operates from 12pm-9pm Sunday to Thursday, and 12pm-11pm Fridays and Saturdays. For more information about the Brewhouse, visit BankstownSports.com/brewhouse

Hitting
THE RIGHT NOTE Two rising stars headline a Musical Mornings show that is set to be a knockout. Musical concerts have an enduring appeal and remain in the memory long after we have seen them. Bankstown Sports’ Musical Mornings, held on the first Wednesday of each month (except January), offers the comforting familiarity of songs from bygone eras – mixed in with a few contemporary numbers – and performed by brilliant young international performers.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Bankstown Sports, we have a spectacular line-up of performers for a very special Musical Mornings concert this September.
Brilliant young tenor Daniel Tambasco and Spanish-born soprano Alex Blandino will light up the stage with their incredible voices, while the always popular Nick Bavarelli will deliver classical tunes on his accordion.
Host Geoff Jones first started presenting acts at Bankstown Sports 40 years ago but continues to be excited by the talent he is able to put on stage, with Daniel and Alex the latest finds.
Daniel's repertoire offers classics such as Moon River and Somewhere from West Side Story, to Paul Anka's beautiful Diana and the operatic hits Nessun Dorma and Andrea Bocelli favourite Time To Say Goodbye.
“I was told they were very good, but they just knocked me out when I first saw them on stage. They worked on stage so well and the way the people reacted to them was fantastic,” he says.
While Alex has her own opera favourites, she also offers show tunes such as One Night Only from Dreamgirls and Barbra Streisand's Don't Rain On My Parade, in addition to Aretha Franklin's Respect all the way to Born This Way by Lady Gaga.
“When I see someone who is really, really good, it does fire you up. You can see talent and you hope they go far. These two, Alex and Daniel, are bright stars and they are nice people, too.”
Nick offers the Latino and Italian classics on the accordion, including the toe-tapping Funiculì, Funiculà.
Supported by the Steve Isoardi Trio, you won’t want to miss this incredible show. Join us for September Musical Mornings on Wednesday 5 September. Tickets are $8 each which includes Devonshire tea. Doors open 10am and Showtime from 11am.

“Once Upon A Time” Tour Play School is one of Australia’s most loved and most enduring kids entertainment programs. With its mix of performers and plush toy friends, including Big Ted, Little Ted, Jemima and Humpty, it has entertained and educated our children for decades. Bankstown Sports is excited to announce that Australia’s favourite and beloved children’s television program is coming to our club as part of its Once Upon A Time national tour. It will be 40 minutes of flat-out singing, dancing and silliness, says touring presenter Emma Palmer. Children will be able to watch classic nursery rhyme characters magically come to life as the pages of the storybook are turned in this exciting new production. As with all of Play School’s concerts, Once Upon A Time is hosted by two Play School presenters, including Emma, along with the real stars of the show: the toys. “My favourite thing is to see them go WILD about the toys!” Emma says. Play School is Australia’s longest running children’s televisions program. The show’s transition from behind the television to live on stage is
designed to entertain, educate and enliven pre-schoolers and parents alike. Everything in the live concert is carefully created with pre-school children’s development in mind. The songs are designed to inspire movement, complemented by quiet times to encourage children to watch and listen. The familiarity of the material, and the presenters combined, totally captivate the young audience with loads of participation, imagination and joy. “Playschool Live is such a buzz!” she says. “To be able to sing and dance with you and tell you such wonderful stories! I love getting the kids dancing and singing and being REALLY silly!” “There is going to be lots of nursery rhymes, songs a story and of course all the toys. I hope we see you at the show,” Emma says. “Come shake your SILLIES out with me!” Play School is broadcast 7 days a week, 4 times daily on weekdays and twice daily on weekends, on ABC4Kids. Once Upon A Time, the companion album, is also available. Play School Live In Concert is in The Theatre on Saturday 20 October. Tickets are $19.80 per person and children under 12 months are free. Doors open at 9.30am. Showtime 10am. All children must be accompanied by a paying adult. Purchase tickets at BankstownSports.com or at reception.

Music of the
G STILL STAYIN
ALIVE
With Bee Gees legend Barry Gibb recently receiving a knighthood, being honoured for his services to music and charity, the timing is perfect to again enjoy all the band’s smash hits, live in concert. Performing the music of the Bee Gees since 1998, The Best of the Bee Gees have performed more than 1000 times to hundreds and thousands of ecstatic fans all over Australasia. Locations the group have performed at include the Mundaring Summer Festival in WA, Queensland’s Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast and Gympie Music Muster, New Year’s Eve celebrations at Universal Studios in Singapore, and headlining on the 2016 “Cruise and Groove” Cruise alongside JPY, Eurogliders and John Farnham. The tribute band’s Queensland tour has followed a path similar to that of the original band. The Manchester-born brothers Gibb – Robin, Maurice and now Sir Barry – developed their style of music on tours around their
adopted home of Redcliffe in Queensland, after the Gibb family emigrated from England to Australia, in the early 1960s. The Gibbs later returned to the UK to find fame and fortune.
With the enviable ability to reproduce the authentic vocal harmonies, The Best of the Bee Gees is a fully live eight-piece band made up of the who’s who of the Australian recording scene. The concert features references to some of the best musicians in the Australian music industry, from some of the most influential
bands of the 80’s, including Marcia Hines, Brian Cadd, Jimmy Barnes, Rose Tattoo, Eurogliders, James Reyne, LRB, Icehouse and Mondo Rock. This fully-produced event takes the audience through the many musical styles the Bee Gees were famous for, spanning all the hits from 1967 to the present day. This show will be something special for Bee Gees fans. It is a live and spectacular concert not to be missed with a “One Night Only” vibe, including some very talented support acts. Be sure to book early as this will sell out. The show is on Saturday 3 November 2018 in The Theatre, tickets are $30 and booths are $140. Doors open 7.15pm, showtime 8pm. AMERICAN BARBECUE IS
smoking hot!
When food is top of mind, and you are thinking Americana, nothing beats barbecue – not the Aussie type, which our northern hemisphere mates call grilling, but a big, bad, blazing hot, smoker. The Acres Club has its own Yoder 30” Frontiersman Traditional Offset Smoker, straight from Kansas, the heartland of American barbecue. It makes light work out of preparing unbelievable smoke-infused meats with the key being heat management, which efficiently draws heat and smoke from the offset firebox rather than cooking directly over coals.
Menu items include The Rib Box Pinnacle of Beef Short Ribs, Smoked Sweet Chilli Corn, Slaw, Mac and Cheese and Brooklyn Pickle, at $25, a The Yoder Beef Brisket Burger, with Cheese Kransky, Slaw and Brooklyn Pickle for $19 and Chicken Wings and Cheese Kransky which includes a box of
Chicken Wings, a Cheese Kransky, Slaw, mac and cheese and Brooklyn Pickle for $18. Or step up with The Brisket Box of Little Joe’s Brisket, Slaw, Mac and Cheese, Sweet Chilli Corn on the Cob, and Brooklyn Pickle for $20. Those going all out will want The Acres Share Platter Pinnacle of Beef Short Ribs, Beef Brisket, Cheese Kransky, Chicken Wings, Corn on the Cob, Slaw, Brooklyn Pickles, Mac and Cheese and bread for $60. For more details go to TheAcresClub.com.au
When you’re thinking about what cut of meat to smoke, you have to think about the roots of barbecue. Briskets, beef ribs, pork ribs, and pork butts became very popular due to the fact they were inexpensive, yet there is also a bit of alchemy about slow cooking them over a wood fire. So Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer is keeping it low and slow, smoking ribs, beef brisket, and more, every weekend.

Diversity in the community is reflected in the latest round of ClubGRANTS funding. There are no better examples of the diversity of those who benefit from ClubGRANTS than the current round of recipients who recently had funding approved.
their PAWS for Trauma program. This program aims to help young refugees who have been traumatised by teaching them how to manage anxiety and regulate negative emotions.
PAWS for Trauma, a pilot program in which Animal Assisted Therapy is used to help young refugees, and a program for disadvantaged toddlers who haven't previously attended daycare or preschool are the latest two projects to have received grants.
The project will work with animals in a shelter, reflecting some of the emotions that refugee clients are no doubt experiencing.
ClubGRANTS is a community grants program funded by local clubs and administered by local councils. The Clubs for Cumberland ClubGRANTS Scheme, which includes Auburn Tennis Club, funds projects that address Community Safety, Education and Employment, Health and Wellbeing, Social Cohesion and Participation, Sustainability, and Youth across the community. The NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS) has received $6,700 in funding for
Small groups of young people will spend time with animals at the RSPCA at Yagoona and in the company of specialist STARTTS Clinical Staff. Groups will range from 8-10 young people, starting with adolescents aged 12-18 with the aim of extending that to young people of all school ages. All groups will be evaluated at the start and end of the project.
The Transition to School, another project that received a contribution from Auburn Tennis Club, is designed to connect children from disadvantage families, specifically those who haven't been to preschool or daycare, with their new school. Through activities, the children learn to write their name, hold a pencil correctly, identify numbers, letters, shapes and colours, as well as, general school readiness such as listening to a story, singing a song and going to the bathroom by themselves. The $5,000 allocated will contribute to funding for staff who will provide the toddlers and older children with an ABC booklet, educational worksheets for literacy, numeracy and pre-writing exercises. Auburn Tennis Club, which amalgamated with Bankstown Sports in 2017, has been servicing the local community for more than 50 years and will continue to do so with schemes such as ClubGRANTS.

Family of good sports The Allens and McKendricks show that a family that plays together stays together. Families are at the heart of any community sports club, but none more so than the combined Allens and McKendrick families who can trace their involvement back three generations to the founding of the Birrong Sports Club. Jack and Jean McKendrick were there at the start of what was then the Regents Park Sports Club, raising three children and seven grandchildren, surrounded by sporting and social activities at Birrong. Now 89 and a Life Member, Jack, still attends the netball and football matches of his children and grandchildren, even after the passing of Jean, aged 90, in 2016. “It’s a community within the community,” says their daughter Raelene Allen (née McKendricks), 56, who is president of Birrong Sports Netball Club, a coach, player and life member. “I suppose, as people, it’s in our blood. It provides a lot of enjoyment of the sports and the community, and we have a lot of fun as a family too and a giggle now and then. “I remember my parents signed up when I
was about three. We were with all the other families at the club and we used to call the adults ’The Mob’, and they became family – Aunty Pat and Uncle Kevin, to us – that’s how close it was.” At last count the Allens-McKendricks had a dozen family competitors across a range of sports with names scattered across the team lists of various sporting pursuits at Birrong Sports Club like tickertape across a winner’s parade. “Mum and Dad used to get dressed in their black and white, get picked up or get themselves to the game and say it was their ’pensioners day out’. It was soccer or netball, then back at the soccer again, with a little bag of food. But it was not just to see us or their grandkids, they’d enjoy all the other players too.” And don’t expect that to stop any time soon. Raelene and her husband Dave recently returned from Barcelona, Spain, where he was competing in the World Masters Hockey tournament. Her brothers Martin, 60, and Bruce, 58, are involved in Birrong Sports Club
activities, either as players, referees, coaches or observers of their own children. “Dad lives close to Jim Ring Reserve (Birrong Park), but he will walk down to the park to watch a game – it might take him a long time – but he’ll be involved in the post mortem, he’ll listen in.” While Birrong Sports Club amalgamated with Bankstown Sports in 2011, which helped improve facilities, the club has maintained its own identity. “It’s just allowed us to survive and provide things for the kids. That’s been tremendous,” says Raelene. “We also use Bankstown Bowling Club as a presentation venue, for the junior disco, and for meetings. “We are all very, very proud when we win grand finals and – being Birrong – we share it as a family. When one or two are playing in a grand final, we are there cheering, we are there watching. We are even proud when our kids have coached a team. But winning is not the highlight, it’s just being able to get out there and keep doing it.”

Community Groups Rewarded! THE Hills Shire Local ClubGRANTS Committee, of which Baulkham Hills Sports Club is a contributor, has allocated almost $80,000 in this round of funding. Baulkham Hills Sports Club contributed almost $30,000 of a total $80,000 towards six projects in The Hills region in the ClubGRANTS year ending August 2018, providing funds for supporting young people in The Hills Shire, mental health and wellbeing projects and community education programs. The community projects which will benefit from the latest round include: a weekend of respite for 10 foster care parents run by Foster Care Angels; a play group for deaf children and their parents; and supporting youths access to the Youth Off The Streets service. There are several other worthy projects which received funding that will also benefit young people in the community, including job-ready workshops and positive youth strategy programs to engage the Hills Shire youth, and the RYDA Road safety education
program targeted at local high schools. Other community groups to benefit from ClubGRANTS funding include the Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation which will offer a respite weekend to six local Hills children who are living with parents and family members affected by mental illness. ClubGRANTs will help Learning Links, which supports children with learning difficulties and disabilities, subsidise access to literacy, numeracy and occupational therapy services. Furthermore, the Hills Domestic Violence Prevention Network, which offers strategies for parents of teens with challenging behaviours, received funding towards their annual workshops. It is a privilege to support these community organisations that are making such a difference in the local community.

T R O P E R S T R SPO WE SHARE THE NEWS FROM OUR SPORTING CLUBS
TWIRLING SUCCESS At age eight, Renae Edmunds took up Baton Twirling and instantly fell in love with the sport. It is a complex sport, combining dance, agility, co-ordination, flexibility and gymnastics – all while manipulating a metal baton. Now 15, Renae says she loves the challenge it brings and the competitive nature of it, despite the potential for injury. “I love getting on the floor and showing my routine to everyone,” she says. “There are a lot of challenges in baton twirling and it is quite common to get injuries during some of the tricks we perform.” Renae trains 15-20 hours a week, mixing it up with a few different classes including twirling, ballet and strength workouts with a personal trainer. She also has regular Skype calls with her overseas coaches who guide her through new moves and routines. All the hard work paid off with Renae being selected to represent Australia at the World Championships in Florida in August. Renae had an outstanding no drop performance in her freestyle event, finishing in second place. The trips are self-funded and cost thousands of dollars, which is why Bankstown Sports has supported Renae’s progression in the sport in previous years with cash contributions. This year, Bankstown Sports was proud to support Renae again with $500 in funding, to assist with her travelling expenses for the World Championships. Renae says it is a huge help. “I have been working towards this goal since I was eight years old. The support from Bankstown Sports over the years has meant so much to me, and I think it’s great that the club gives back to the community.”

Towards the goal for
GRASSROOTS SPORT We are thrilled to announce the 2018 G.O.A.L. survey results! Bankstown Sports is committed to its 43 associated sporting clubs and is focused on improving participation and access to sport in our local community. It is our firm belief that this aim is achieved when sporting clubs are implementing best practice in their governance and operations. To support this belief, the G.O.A.L. (Governance and Operations Accreditation Level) program was established. The G.O.A.L. project focuses on strategic objectives as benchmarks, based on five key operating areas: • Finance Management and Governance • C ommunication, Information Management and Community Engagement • Equipment and Facilities Management • P layer, Volunteer Management and Codes of Behaviour • Health & Safety and Risk Management In 2016, the first G.O.A.L. survey was completed to measure an associated sporting club’s current performance across these five key areas. The results provided an understanding of how our associated sporting clubs are being governed and run, and identifying key areas of focus in terms of the support and training Bankstown Sports could provide. In May 2018, the second iteration of the G.O.A.L. survey was administered by consultants Crowe Horwath, in conjunction with our Sport and Community department. Thirty-three clubs
were asked to respond to more than 100 questions focusing on the above areas and, based on these results, were given an accreditation level from 1-5. That score was then converted to a star rating with recommendations given to clubs as to how they could improve their governance and operations in key areas. Encouragingly, the results showed improvement across all five key areas of governance and operations. Of the 33 associated sporting clubs, 24 had improved on their results from 18 months earlier with the overall average star rating jumping from 2.9 out of 5 in 2016 to 3.1 out of 5 in 2018. These improvements in the management and governance of our associated sporting clubs are having a widespread effect on the local community, as shown through better relationships with sporting governing bodies, local councils and other community organisations. Many of our clubs have enjoyed not only an increase in membership but in event participation as people recognise the positive changes in management and operation. We aspire for our associated sporting clubs to be viewed as the clubs of choice in their local communities and competitions. The G.O.A.L. survey will be administrated again in 2020 when we hope all our associated sporting clubs will target a minimum 4-star rating across those five key areas as we seek to support and encourage best practice in all facets of their operations. That’s the GOAL!

Young BMX superstar climbs
INTERNATIONAL RANKS Bankstown Sports Cycling Club’s Harley Bradshaw claims third in 2018 BMX World Championships. While he is just six years old, Harley Bradshaw has already been a member of Bankstown Sports Cycling Club for a year, has been racing BMX for more than three years and has taken the podium in international competition. Harley spends up to 10 hours a week training for BMX and track cycling, and recently achieved some outstanding results on the BMX track. In 2017, he travelled to South Carolina to compete in the BMX World Championships to finish with a No.4 ranking. “I like the competition and making new friends but sometimes I do so many laps my legs get really sore,” he says.
As a result of his world ranking, Harley was selected to represent Australia in the Australian National Team at the 2018 BMX World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, in June. He took out the bronze medal in the final, having earlier won his semi-final heat. While Harley loves the thrill of competition and forging new relationships at race meets, he still must make school a priority. “I do so many laps my legs get really sore. I enjoy BMX as a hobby, but I would also like to use it as a career in the future. I am in Year 1 and my parents make me finish my homework before I go to training.”
Birrong Sports FC hosts Junior Japanese Soccer Team While the rest of the world was focused on the results of the FIFA World Cup, Birrong Sports Football Club was preparing to stage its own Mini World Cup Gala Day. While Birrong Sports has been involved in a Cultural Exchange Program since 1999, this year it again hosted a junior football (soccer) team from Bankstown sister city Suita City, Osaka, Japan. In August, a team of 20 boys, aged 10-12, along with five officials, landed in Sydney eager to take on an experience of a lifetime. During the stay, the Japanese players were billeted with families from Birrong Sports Football Club to enhance their
cultural experience, a valuable aspect of the exchange program over the years as it assists in breaking down language barriers between the local hosts and their Japanese guests. During the visit, both the Japanese and Birrong Sports football players participated in the Mini World Cup Gala Day where players competed in mixed teams. After the gala day, the kids were treated to an Aussie lunch at the Birrong Sports Football clubhouse. During the exchange program, the Japanese players visited Birrong Public School where they participated in classroom activities to experience an
Australian learning environment. In their lunch break, the Japanese team also played a match against the Birrong Public School team. Other activities included a ferry ride across Sydney Harbour to Manly Beach, a city site-seeing tour and a visit to Sydney Aquatic Centre. At the end of the exchange program, the Japanese and Birrong Sports players exchanged shirts as a lasting memento of their experience. ACRES of talent!
With AFL club membership at an all-time high, and three stellar Sydney teams in the national men’s and women’s competitions, it’s no wonder many new fans are keen to find out more about playing this great Aussie game. Over the past three years, with the support of Bankstown Sports, the Bankstown Sports BullSharks AFL Club has been able to increase local participation in the sport by 300 per cent, through the Auskick program. Piggybacking on this local success, AFL NSW/ACT ran an eight-week program at Roberts Park, Greenacre, earlier this year, which targeted grassroots participation and skill development for aspiring Aussie Rules players. Originally promoted via in-school programs throughout the Bankstown Local Government Area, up to 50 children, from a range of cultural backgrounds, attended each session. There was a high female participation rate, no doubt because of the recent success of the AFL Women’s competition.
HAVE YOU TRIED AFL? If you are interested in joining the Bankstown Sports BullSharks AFL Club, please contact Tim Hall, Bankstown Sports BullSharks AFL Club President at president@bankstownafl.com.au.

The overarching idea for the Auskick program was to increase participation and membership numbers of the Bankstown Sports BullSharks AFL Club, while showcasing the game of Aussie Rules AFL to young kids in the Bankstown area. Encouragingly, 17 participants from the Greenacre Auskick program have connected with the BullSharks with a view to registering to play with the club
in 2019. Bankstown Sports supported the Auskick program to the tune of $35 per child for registration and provided gift vouchers for kids and their families to enjoy a meal at the end-of-program presentation, which was held in August at The Acres Club.
The new Auskick program launch tied in well with the AFL’s “Don’t Believe in Never” campaign which showcases Bankstown Sports BullSharks player, Dema, highlighting the cultural inclusion of people of all backgrounds at the grassroot level of the game. AFL NSW/ACT Local Area Manager, Adam Clough, says Bankstown Sports’ support has allowed them to facilitate an inclusive program in South West Sydney where AFL participation has previously been low. “With the ongoing support of Bankstown Sports Club, we’ve been able to establish the Greenacre AFL Auskick Centre in an area of South West Sydney with minimal AFL engagement. We have seen a wide range of cultural communities being brought together to participate in physical activity and learn some new skills in a fun, inclusive program.”
