CHairman’s report john murray, CHAIRMAN

The Clubs & Community Awards recognise the outstanding social contribution made by clubs, in their local communities, throughout New South Wales. This is the second year that ClubsNSW, our peak body, has devoted their annual get-together to focus on clubs as the heart of the community. Clubs and the support they provide are acknowledged through 11 different categories of awards. I am very happy to inform you that this year your club won two awards. In the Youth Category, Bankstown Sports won the award for our ongoing partnership with Punchbowl High School’s Students at Risk program that helps students who face the possibility of dropping out of school. This is a positive and worthwhile program and you might like to read about it on page 5. We also received a ‘Highly Commended Award’ for our ongoing support to the elderly in the community and in particular Bankstown City Aged Care. The awards night on Friday May 9 was all about sharing our industry’s stories and the support clubs provide to the community across New South Wales. International Nurses’ Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. Eight years ago, Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital approached the club with a request that we assist them by contributing towards their nursing scholarships to be awarded on this day. This year, the international theme is “Nurses: A force for change – A vital resource for health”. For the last eight years your club has assisted the hospital with $40,000 towards what has

become known as ‘the Bankstown Nursing Scholarships’. This supports nurses to attend special programs and conferences to improve their professional skills and indeed specialise. I would like to share with you the fact that this year 44 nurses received scholarships, either to attend conferences or to further their professional development. Fleur Trezise is now a veteran professional who has developed her expertise in wound management. Yasmine Archer and Kylie Smith spoke eloquently about their recent study and how the scholarships have helped their development. It is very gratifying to see how appreciative these nurses are of the assistance we provide. Our auditorium or ‘Showroom’ is known to most of you. As one of our most popular venues it is used by a cross section of the community for everything from entertainment, Morning Melodies, annual school presentations, dance school celebrations to bingo. As you can imagine, the room gets a good work out and over the years has begun to look a little tired. My fellow directors and the Executive Management have decided to give the ‘Showroom’ a facelift and a makeover, so that it is more in keeping with expectations of our members and patrons today. I ask for your patience and co-operation as we close the ‘Showroom’ for renovations from July 1 to approximately August 25. I have no doubt that, once completed, you will find the changes and improvements worthwhile and beneficial. Our renovations in the Greenfield Station Bistro began last month, with the same

objective in mind, and when completed by June 6, will be more functional and comfortable for all our members and patrons. Thank you for putting up with the inconvenience. I am grateful for your patience and co-operation. From March 12, 2014, major changes to the Privacy Act 1988 (Commonwealth) came into effect. The main objective of these changes is to ensure that organisations manage personal information in an open and transparent way, so you know what information is collected, why it is collected and how it will be used. While we already provide our members with information about how we manage their personal details, I thought it was appropriate to draw your attention to our updated ‘Privacy Policy’. Please read the policy carefully as it contains new details about how and when we may collect, hold, use or disclose your personal information. The policy is available through a quick link on our home page. Please visit BankstownSports.com or if you have any questions, please phone or ask to see our Operations Manager or General Manager. Our Executive Chef has revised some of the menus to include ‘hearty winter warming’ dishes that I would encourage you to try as we go through our coldest months. Thanks once again for supporting our club and other venues.

The following members have passed away recently and to their relatives and friends may we offer our sincere condolences in their time of grief: Paul Bisson, Russell Lyons, Tai Chau Huynh, John Veiss, John Angove, Mary Mauro, Walter Basham, Russell Arkinstall, Muriel Miles, Inez Macdonell, John Ince, Zella Moxham, John Round, Joseph Kuriata, Michael Sweeney, Alexander Paska, Carl Sollazzo, Oli Cahill, Josephine Yott, Arthur Peacock, Peter Miles, Betty Baker, Pamela Brown, Michael John Hanaran, George Farrugia and Nick Symyniuk. The following member was reported as being in hospital and on behalf of our President, Directors and all our members we wish her a speed recovery: Teresa Mullane.

The Probus Club of Bankstown meets at Bankstown Sports Club on the 3rd Monday of each month at 10am. There is a Guest Speaker at meetings talking on interesting topics and day trips are held regularly. Members of Bankstown Sports Club are welcome to join, contact Secretary, Judy Learmonth on 9644 1421. Bankstown Sports InTouch

GIVING RURAL

families a lift Bankstown Sports Club’s support for Sydney charity Little Wings is helping children and their families travel from regional and remote areas for treatment at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The club has contributed $25,000 and 15 nights’ accommodation at the Bankstown Sports Travelodge to the charity after Chief Executive Officer Mark Condi read about Little Wings in the local paper. Travelling from regional areas to Sydney for treatment takes considerable time and money and can create difficulties for families. Kevin Robinson, an experienced pilot and businessman who started flying when he was 16, decided to change all that when he set up Little Wings. Since February last year, Little Wings has provided 165 free flights,

transporting 290 people (patients and family members) at a cost of more than $190,000. “Once you start giving something back to the community, helping people, you get so much back yourself,” says Kevin. “I’m really proud that 100% of the monies we raise go directly to Little Wings. I’m lucky to have had my own healthy kids and a corporate background in executive recruitment that has helped me plan and organise the setup for this charity. It brings you back to the basic things that you should appreciate in life. The close connections I’ve built with Little Wings families are the rewards I get from helping people. It’s such a pleasure.” Robert and Cristy Duke’s daughter, Brodie, is being treated for a rare childhood cancer. Before they came across Little Wings the family

had to drive from Forbes to Sydney for treatment, usually a four-day round trip. The travel put a strain on their finances and caused many lost days of work. Little Wings has made a huge difference to the family. “It’s a wonderful thing that they do,” says Robert. “Traveling by car with our sick daughter wasn’t a good option and we were so fortunate to get support from Little Wings. Kevin is a champion bloke!” Bankstown Sports’ Chairman John Murray was touched by the family’s story and their bravery in a very difficult time. “When we heard about this charity and the true difference they make to the lives of families, we just had to reach out to offer our support.”

Community spirit

Doug Shed den (Director ), Richard Phillips (Vic e-Presiden (Director) t), Jim Roni and Alex Fu s lcher (Direc tor)

has its rewards Bankstown Sports’ long association with two local ‘icons’, Punchbowl Boys High School and Bankstown City Aged Care, has delivered the club a major youth award as well as a highly commended award in the ClubsNSW’s Clubs & Community Awards held at Moore Park on Friday May 9. The awards recognise the outstanding social contribution made by NSW clubs in their local communities. Bankstown Sports Club won in the Youth Category for its long support for Punchbowl Boys’ High School’s Students At Risk Program (S.T.A.R.). The club was also highly commended in the Outstanding Regional Initiative Category for its work with Bankstown City Aged Care. Bankstown Sports Chief Executive Mark Condi says “The Club is really thrilled to be honoured through the ClubsNSW Award. Bankstown Sports is very much a communitycentric club. We like to support programs that make a real difference to people in our community – it’s what motivates our club’s Board and all of our staff. Punchbowl Boys

High School is a rarity these days – it’s a school that has undergone a complete transformation because it has created a strong, family-like bond with its staff and students. Just as our club strives for a family-feel, so has this local school, which is achieving enormous success with its boys, many of whom have come from very dire circumstances. “As well, Bankstown City Aged Care – with whom we have a longstanding relationship – is another example of a local organisation that puts people first. We are proud to be able to support and foster the great people at both Punchbowl Boys High School and Bankstown City Aged Care and these awards are recognition of truly important initiatives in our community. In addition to the two awards, the club was a top five finalist in the People’s Choice Awards and Osvaldas Anusaitis, won the major prize of an overseas trip for voting for our club on social media.” As a result of the Club’s support, Punchbowl Boy’s High’s S.T.A.R. program has given more than 202 students a chance to either go out

into the bush for three days in Sydney’s National Park, or to go to Canberra and the Snowy Mountains. The activities aim to give the students confidence, provides new experiences and encourages them to build bonds that will keep them in high school longer. Student improvement has been phenomenal. Punchbowl Boys High teacher Chris Kazanis, who helped develop the program, says the students have gone from a very low HSC completion rate to almost 100 per cent in five years. “This award acknowledges the relationship that exists between the school and the club. It’s hard to articulate, but when you come to the school and you see the way the Board interacts with the boys and they genuinely have an interest in this program – you can’t fake that.” “It’s that vested interest that comes through. This acknowledgment is fantastic and we are very excited to be a part of it.” “We wouldn’t have been able to do this – or the original S.T.A.R. program – without Bankstown Sports’ help,” Chris says. on the Board Avid cyclist and long-time cricket club director Martin Klumpp is Bankstown Sports’ newest Board member. Martin joined the club mid-last year after the sad passing of Director, Dion Bourne – who was also a member of the cricket club. “I felt it was only fair to respect Dion’s legacy and carry on his work with the club,” says Martin, who is a life member of the Bankstown District Cricket Club.

Martin played grade cricket in the 1970s for “eight or nine years” and still holds two roles at Bankstown District Cricket Club: Secretary of the men’s club and assistant secretary of the women’s. He says his cricket playing days are well behind him, but not his days of supporting the club.

He says he is amazed by the amount of time the Board members, whom he describes as a “fantastic bunch”, put into supporting the more than 40 sporting clubs and all of the other charities the club gets behind. “I thought I had a sense of it,” Martin says, “but I am really full of admiration.”

“Brian Freedman asked me to step in for three months as Honorary Secretary – and that was about 29 years ago. I don’t think he’s been looking very hard for a replacement,” Martin says.

Martin, a Human Resources consultant, also praised the club’s executive team, led by Chief Executive Mark Condi. “We’re incredibly lucky to have a strong management team at the club. John Mackay had an amazing vision and always kept the club true to its ideals. He then mentored Mark for a decade and instilled similar values – but then Mark has also brought a fresh, new perspective to the club. It has been a wonderful transition from the old guard to the new.”

Martin and his wife Maureen live at Picnic Point and have three children. Describing cycling as the new golf, Martin can be seen, clad in lycra, peddling around the area. “I’m only new to it,” he says, “But I really enjoy it.” Martin has another special connection to the club. His aunt, Avis Berg, who is 90 years old, plays Bingo at the club two days a week with her mates. “The club is a huge part of our members’ lives,” he says. “There is no part of our community that the sports club doesn’t touch.”

Nurses energised by

Scholarships Program Forty-four nurses at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital have been awarded a 2014 Bankstown Sports Club scholarship. For the past eight years, International Nurses Day has been extra special for nurses at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. That’s because Bankstown Sports Club presents its clinical excellence scholarships worth $40,000 annually. To date, $320,000 has been granted to 236 local nurses, allowing them to take part in further education as well as attending and presenting at international conferences. This year’s 44 recipients will use the funding to undertake a variety of activities including attending a Pain Management Conference in Melbourne, Smart Strokes 2014 and the 6th Biennial Australian and New Zealand Falls Prevention Conference – both in Sydney, and the Infection Prevention & Control Conference 2014 in Adelaide. Some nurses are being supported with further studies, such as Master’s and Bachelor’s programs. The Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services at Bankstown Hospital, Caroline Farmer, says “Bankstown Sports Club’s consistent support has made an enormous difference to our nursing and midwifery staff. It generates staff enthusiasm and improved practice, so our patients are the ultimate beneficiaries. As always, we are very grateful for the club’s continued support.” At the presentation of this year’s scholarships at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital, Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Emergency Department,

Yasmine Archer, spoke about what a difference her 2013 scholarship had made to her. “Through networking and seeing a group of my peers talk enthusiastically about emergency nursing has reignited my passion for my work,” says Yasmine, who attended the 11th International Conference for Emergency Nurses in October last year. The conference included workshops on non-invasive ventilation, advanced skills in wound closure and on treating burns.” “With this newfound motivation I have been able to achieve a regrading…and it has left me with many plans and ideas for practice change and development within my department, while also motivating me to continue my own ongoing professional development. “I’d like to thank Bankstown Sports Club for allowing me to attend the conference and help me to find my passion again,” Yasmine said. Bankstown Sports CEO Mark Condi says “Nurses and midwives are invaluable and we are pleased to be able to help enrich their professional lives, which is of enormous benefit to the people of our community. “This is the point of these scholarships. If these grants can increase confidence, help implement appropriate treatments and promote best practice and patient safety, then it’s money very well spent,” Mr Condi says. Bankstown Sports InTouch

re-member Bankstown Sports’ members are a loyal bunch and there’s plenty of reasons why. The club’s facilities are second-to-none and members earn points for both their birthdays and at Christmas time.

So, when membership renewal time comes around in mid-winter, it’s a no-brainer. But it’s also a reminder that you only have until June 30 this year to use all of the bonus points you have collected during the year. Not sure how many points you have? New screens installed on the gaming floor allow

Greenfield Station Bistro’s The renovations to the Greenfield Station Bistro will be completed by the time you’re reading this story, around June 6. With work due to begin on the refurbishment of the Showroom and with the successful launch of the new Atrium Bar last year, Bankstown Sports is continuously improving its venues and service. The renovations will feature new carpet and furniture to lift the look of the Bistro and a fresh coat of paint for the columns. The club is also improving by giving the bathrooms a freshen up, re-grouting the tiles and re-finishing the vanities and mirrors. We’re also making it easier to get around by removing the existing ramp and moving the beverage bench.

These improvements will add to the light and airy atmosphere of Greenfield Station Bistro, which is enhanced by its high ceilings and the familiar railway theme. Greenfield Station features a superb collection of railway memorabilia given to the club in 1994 by the Zig Zag railway near Lithgow in the Blue Mountains, in return for their support with building an amenities block. There is a full collection of NSW rail-issue crockery and silverware, as well as oil lamps, water decanters and station master hats. From July 14, there will be a new winter menu filled with delicious hearty meals available. Next time you’re in the club drop by the Greenfield Station Bistro and see the changes.

Tony Chayna , Sous Chef Platform O ne

Chef’s express at

Platform One The club’s fine dining restaurant, Platform One, has always attracted interest with its railway themed carriages. The food team, led by Executive Chef, Helmut Gundendorfer, are proud of the standards the club sets in delivering delicious and beautifully presented meals to our members and guests. Platform One’s Sous Chef is the very affable Tony Chayna. Tony has been working at the club for 15 years and has enormous enthusiasm for the job. “I sit down with Helmut and we discuss great ideas, we speak to the suppliers about new cuts of meat or new ranges of seasonal vegetables,” says Tony. “We bounce off one another, but I like the fact that Helmut allows me to be free to express myself artistically through the menu. There’s no friction – we’re like-minded and, as a result, the staff are like family and there’s a great atmosphere in the kitchen.” “We like to reflect the fashion of the day with our food preparation. Technique always changes and we make sure we’re always updating,” Tony says. “We strive for great, high quality ingredients which allow us to think of textures and colour.”

A good example of how things have changed over the years that Tony has been at the club, is when he talks about cooking large joints of meat. “We used to cook meat at the accepted temperature of 180 degrees C, now when we cook something like a large veal rack, we cook it at 65 degrees C. After three to three and a half hours, the meat has a better texture, is more tender and retains the juices. We no longer need to serve heavy sauces as the juice is retained. It’s a whole new approach to food preparation centred on attention to detail and the best quality ingredients served in the most appealing way.” Tony prefers to be the main cook at home too. “I experiment on the family. My wife Nancy and my daughter Alexia are the guinea pigs,” he says. “Mum is the princess and daddy is the chef to my daughter. I particularly like to cook sweets and pastries at home as we usually get professionals to do them at the club.” “I know a lot of cooking off by heart as I learnt a lot from my mother, especially when I was an apprentice. I was one of five children of Lebanese background who all grew up in Punchbowl. I used to help Mum on Sunday lunches peeling potatoes and all these years

later I still raid her recipes for dishes I’ve grown to love. My mum and dad still live in Punchbowl and they’re not going anywhere!” Tony’s exquisite new winter dining menu has just been settled. Here are a few of the highlights: For entrée, choose from the wagyu beef brisket with cauliflower puree and shaved baby beetroot or the dukkah spiced baby chicken taco with avocado salsa, pomegranate, chipotle yoghurt and tequila lime jelly. For main course, your choices include the Moroccan goat hotpot with Israeli cous cous, spiced pumpkin, mint, heritage tomatoes, labna (thick yoghurt) and smoked almonds or what about the venison osso bucco with potato gnocchi, porcini sage butter, red currant compote and Parisian vegetables. If you have room for dessert, try the caramelised fig and poached rhubarb with warm mini rum buba, crème fraiche and salted walnuts, or one of the club’s special cheese plates which will go especially well with a glass of port. You can watch cooking demonstrations on Bankstown Sports website at BankstownSports.com.

Happy 1st Birthday

Imperial Jade To mark one year of trading at the club, Imperial Jade Palace’s co-owner, Gable Lo, chatted to InTouch about how the restaurant is settling in. “We’re very happy with what we’ve achieved in our first 12 months. By changing the emphasis of the food to a fresher offering, that is more aligned to authentic, traditional Chinese, we’ve seen a huge increase in customers, particularly local Vietnamese and people originally from mainland China,” says Gable. “Our live fish tanks are the envy of local restaurants, as we keep them in such good condition, regularly replacing the seawater in the tanks.” The restaurant’s new manager, Simon Yee, is also making a big difference to Imperial Jade Palace. “Since Simon came on board six months ago, he has added a whole new level of energy to the restaurant,” Gable says.

“Imperial Jade is all about service and quality and Simon is very focused on training,” says Gable. “Saturday nights are our biggest night and we can often have 12-13 staff working in the kitchen and another 15 or so serving out the front. It’s so busy that it’s very important our staff are well-trained and focused, which they are.” Imperial Jade Palace’s menu is without rival. There is a terrific Yum Cha available at lunch time every day. Also available at both lunch and dinner are a la carte specialties, such as wok-tossed lobster tail with ginger and shallots, or deep-fried soft shell crab in garlic butter. The steamed eggplant with dry scallops and the Imperial crispy skin chicken with ginger, shallots, chilli and soy should not be missed.

FANCY THAT! Dianne Lancaster shares her insights on creating super-special events.

Scared speechless! At some point in our lives, we’re likely to be called upon to make a speech; it may be for a family wedding, graduation party or a presentation at work. If the mere thought of giving a speech has you breaking out in a cold sweat, you’re not alone. According to the Book of Lists, a trivia book compiled by David Wallechinsky, his father Irving Wallace and sister Amy Wallace – first published in 1977 – speaking before a group was listed as the number one worst human fear, even beating out death.

So what makes a good speech? It must inform, motivate, educate or entertain others and above all connect the speaker to the audience. Once you take the focus off yourself and begin connecting with your audience, much of that fear disappears. Create a dynamic opening to your speech. Use a humorous anecdote, quote, statement or question to engage your audience. Those first few moments on the platform can make or break your connection with others.

While there are good reasons people fear public speaking, I have yet to witness someone flee from the stage mid-presentation, running for their life through the fire exit. And, to my knowledge, no one has died from giving a bad presentation.

Search out the positive people in your audience. Ignore the negative facial expressions and focus on those who are smiling, nodding and open to what you are saying. They provide the energy and confirmation you need.

But giving a speech is no easy task. Not only do you have to have something worthwhile to say, but you have to say it in a way that connects with your audience. How often have you sat in a presentation and said to yourself, “Wow, this is so boring … I can’t sit through another minute of it.”

Depending on the occasion, making reference to a personal experience in your speech can make what you’re saying relatable to others – but make sure it’s appropriate.

There is a secret however, to overcoming the shakes, quakes and shivers on the speaking platform, and it’s not imagining your audience is naked! It’s the realisation that we speak in public all the time.

Practice! Practice aloud and practice often. There is no substitute for practice and no excuse for not practising. In the professional speaking industry, they say that once you practice your speech 100 times, you are just beginning to get it right!

The average person says 15,000 words a day, probably speaking to two, three or even five people all at the same time. Congratulations! You are already a practiced, successful public speaker.

As someone who would rather be reading a book at home than running around on stage, it took me a long time to figure out that the public speaking podium need not be a “tower of terror.”

Renovations in Progress

Bankstown Sports is continually striving to improve our facilities for members and guests. This year, the Showroom, familiar as a place of enjoyment to so many of our members, is undergoing a refit which promises to deliver state-of-the-art comfort and convenience to members and guests. The Showroom has been an integral part of the club’s entertainment from the very early days. In the early 1980s, the Showroom was packed to overflowing when acts like Midnight Oil, Herman’s Hermits and even Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, who were exclusive to the club, played to our members and guests. Since that time, tribute shows have always been popular as well as the many local and international stars of the stage, such as Col

Joye (who incidentally was the first Australian singer to have a number one Australian hit with the song Oh Yeah Uh Huh). Other acts to grace the Showroom stage include, Al Martino, Slim Dusty, Jackie Love, Judy Stone and Ricky May. In the 70’s and 80’s, the Showroom was also regularly full for Operettas, such as The Student Prince and The Desert Song. Both of these productions played at the club every quarter for many years. The Student Prince was popularised by Mario Lanza on the soundtrack to the 1954 MGM film of the same name, and featured the song Drink, Drink, Drink, while The Desert Song was popularised by Nelson Eddy, who was famous for his 1953 Columbia recording.

ARTIST IMPRESSION

Todd McKenney will be the 1st performer in the newly renovated Showroom

As recently as last year the Showroom hosted Psychic Sally from Great Britain, who played to a packed and amazed audience. With renovations due for completion at the end of August, the Showroom will be a vastly different experience for patrons. It will be fully re-carpeted and will feature a new sound system and new theatre style tiered seating to improve the view of the stage from anywhere in the room. This change to the seating will provide a similar feel to a theatre. The new seats are also ergonomically friendly for improved comfort and will allow for better personal space with plenty of leg room. They also have convenient drink holders for members and guests.

Bankstown Sports’ General Manager Andrew Kelly says, “A lot of thought has gone into the design and execution of our new Showroom. As well as better access for wheelchairs, new tiered seating, booths and the bar area will also be upgraded to make it easier for people to refresh with drinks when attending a show.” “Our focus has always been to provide enjoyable and high quality entertainment at affordable prices. The revitalised Showroom will bring this very popular venue into the 21st century, so that we can continue to deliver great entertainment for our members and guests.” The club is celebrating the opening of the new Showroom on September 5 in style with

noted song and dance man, Todd McKenney. Todd is not only a wonderful compere but a brilliant dancer and entertainer, famous particularly for his tributes to Australian icon, Peter Allen. The opening of the showroom kicks off a new approach to the club’s entertainment. The month of September features Pop Royalty themed shows and that’s followed by Rocktober in October and Broadway meets Hollywood in November. “Come along and see the great array of talented artists in the new venue,” says Andrew. “We’re sure you’ll be just as excited about the new Showroom as we are.”

Rocktober

in the new Showroom This October we’re going back to the ’50s in our brand new Showroom, to the era of classic rock ’n’ roll. To kick things off, Lonnie Lee and the Leemen will be channeling the greats on Saturday October 4, with a show built from the songs of Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Marty Robbins, Eddie Cochran, Hank Williams, Roger Miller and Johnny Ray … to name a few. Lonnie is the original troubadour and over many decades has delighted audiences with his talent and clever song interpretations. Then on Saturday October 11, ‘The Big Bopper’ of Australian rock’n’roll Doug Parkinson presents his ’50s and ’60s spectacular. Doug’s show presents the artists that shook the world, rattled auditoriums and rolled a generation with songs from the catalogues of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Doug’s famous rendition of the Big Bopper’s Chantilly Lace, which will be a highlight of the night.

On Saturday October 18, we’re planning a Rock ’n’ Roll Dance Party like no other with the Jive Bombers and the ‘swing king’ DJ Vinnie. The Jive Bombers were founded in 1985 and have been playing in clubs, at music festivals and functions ever since. Their music ranges from boogie woogie to swing, lounge, blues, rockabilly, soul, latin and, of course, rock’n’roll. To cap the month, the only rock ’n’ roll tribute show of its kind, Shake Rattle & Roll takes over the Showroom on Saturday October 25. With hot professional dancers, reminiscent of Dancing with the Stars, authentic ’50s costumes and classic tunes all held together by MC Wolfman Jack, Shake, Rattle and Roll will blast you out of your seat. Get your tickets now at BankstownSports.com to feel the ’50s party spirit during Rocktober in the Showroom.

Shake, Rattle and Roll will be performing on Saturday 25 October at 2.30pm and 8pm!

Shaking it up! “Reminiscent of TV’s popular ‘Dancing with the Stars’, there’ll be the jive, the jitterbug, rock‘n’roll plus the cha cha and even a bit of jazz.”

In a few months, the temperatures will start to rise again and so will the activity at Bankstown Sports Club’s newly refurbished Showroom. In a real coup for the club, on Saturday October 25, the impressive production direct from Melbourne and exclusive to Bankstown Sports Club, Shake, Rattle & Roll will have people jumping in their seats with two fantastic performances. This massive troupe featuring five dynamic vocalists and 18 dancers will bring back the 1950s with gusto as they immortalise the legends of rock’n’roll. In 1992, Shake, Rattle & Roll’s producer and costume designer Nina Bahoudian and producer and creative director Adam Bahoudian came up with a concept for a weekend show in a restaurant based on the fabulous ’50s. It took the pair two years to bring the show to life and in no time they found themselves with a show selling out and being staged 200 times a year. By 1999, what they originally thought would be a fun weekend event staged a few times, had been playing for nearly six years and they decided it had run its course. Fast forward to 12 years later and the duo decided that it was time to bring the show back.

With a much bigger troupe, the show has now grown to a two hour party, with sizzling choreography, based on a live recreation of Wolfman Jack’s famous radio show. The show was staged in its second incarnation at Melbourne’s Crown Casino and sold out in weeks. And so the legendary show, set in a ’50s diner, continues to this day. Bankstown Sports throws its own party with Shake, Rattle & Roll on Saturday October 25. The show keeps the audience engaged with a mix of tempos and so many hit tunes that you will not stop singing along. Can you recall some of these famous tunes? Chantilly Lace, La Bamba, That’ll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, Kay Sera Sera and of course Johnny O’Keefe’s famous She’s My Baby. And the dancing! Reminiscent of TV’s popular Dancing with the Stars, there’ll be the jive, the jitterbug, rock’n’roll plus the cha cha and even a bit of jazz. This show is packed with energy on-stage. Shake, Rattle & Roll is guaranteed to be a true highlight of the program for the newly renovated Showroom this year. Get your tickets now online at BankstownSports.com at main reception. Elvis is in

THE BUILDING “The King Is Back” at Bankstown Sports on Friday October 31. You won’t get anyone as authentically Elvis as Ben Portsmouth. Named Grand Champion of the Worldwide Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist contest in August 2012, Ben was the first person from outside the US to win the prestigious title. Ben, who’s actually English, looks like Elvis, sings like Elvis and has the same on stage charisma that the great man had all those years ago. Ben’s father was an avid Elvis fan, so he grew up on a steady diet of ‘The King’s’ songs and naturally decided to become an Elvis tribute artist in 2005, forming the “Taking Care of Elvis” band.

World Cup fever has arrived!

From 13th June to 14th July (Australian dates), the club is preparing for one of the world’s great sporting tournaments when the FIFA World Cup kicks off in Brazil. InTouch caught up with veteran Kevin Mullen who played soccer for Australia and is featured in the Bankstown Sporting Hall of Fame at Bankstown Memorial Oval. “We’ve been in the last four World Cups and the qualifying money that comes back into the Federation is fantastic for developing our juniors,” says Kevin. “We’ve got a really young team going over to Brazil and people say that they’ve got a tough draw, but let me tell you any World Cup draw is tough. Every team is playing their heart out for a chance to get into the finals. I can‘t wait to watch the games!” Throughout the World Cup, all games will be televised live in the club’s Total Sports Bar, regardless of the time of day or night. And the good news is all games will be on the big screen! There are also 14 new lounges and new tables being delivered to make the Sports Bar extra comfortable.

New menus have been developed for the Sports Bar, so you don’t need to miss a thing. The $16 meal deal gets you a hearty meal (like a Total Sports Bar Burger, a Mexican Nachos or a Stockman’s steak sandwich - which would usually be $15 alone) and a bottle of Matilda Bay beer. Birrong’s Kath Fullagar honoured Birrong Sports Netball Club’s Life Member, Kath Fullagar, was honoured this year with the prestigious Order of Australia (OAM) for her service to netball. Kath, now 76, started in the sport when she was just 11 years old. A member of Birrong Sports Netball Club since 1969*, Kath has been involved in administration, coaching or umpiring for more than 60 years. Admired for her compassion for others and selfless hours dedicated to the sport of netball, Kath’s commitment to the sport is impressive. Amongst her notable contributions, her work developing umpires for Bankstown City Netball Association delivered unprecedented numbers and quality of umpires in the 1970s and ’80s. Kath is also a Life Member of Bankstown City Netball Association and Netball NSW, where she as an administrator at state level fulfilled duties as a Venue Coordinator for the World Netball Championships in 1992. And where did it all begin? At the sideline of her daughter’s netball game, she was inspired to get involved with umpiring. Thousands of children and adults alike rely on the work of volunteers like Kath to keep sport alive in the community. From all of us here at Bankstown Sports, congratulations Kath! *Then Regents Park Sports Women’s Basketball Club.

FOUR-peat Champions Baseballers, the Bankstown Sports Under 17 Diamondbacks defended their title this year to win a championship for the fourth year running. The team played the season undefeated to also finish as minor premiers. The boys are passionate baseballers, training hard throughout the season. They also give their all to the sport, with five players coaching the club’s junior teams and umpiring on a regular basis. This trend of giving back to the sport flows from the top … Under 17s coach, David Muir has just completed 20 years service with Bankstown Sports Baseball Club. With seven of the Diamondbacks now too old to return to Under 17s next year, the Bankstown Sports Baseball Club is hoping to field a new senior team for the 2014/15 season. New players are always welcome at the club, so if you’d like to give baseball a go this summer, contact either Bankstown Sports or Baulkham Hills Sports’ Baseball Clubs (contact details over the page).

Football fever Bankstown Sports Club is proud to support four community football clubs: Bankstown Sports Stars Football Club, Bankstown Sports Strikers Football Club, Baulkham Hills Football Club and Birrong Sports Football Club. Between these four clubs, there are well over 2,000 participants of all ages, skill level and ability. With the 2015 AFC Asian Cup due to hit Aussie shores next January, two club volunteers have been inducted as Community Ambassadors for the Asian Cup. Remy Wehbe of Bankstown Sports Stars Football Club and Jim Lim of Baulkham Hills Football Club, are two of 250 community ambassadors. They will help activate their respective local communities in the lead up to the 16-nation

Baseball –The Under 17’s Diamo Championship winning teandbacks m

competition. Both clubs will be hosting family gala days, with plenty of action and fun celebrating football and community. Jim’s motivation for getting involved was obvious: “the real objective of introducing this event to Baulkham Hills was to inspire our kids to embrace the game with a bit more passion and feel the energy of a major sporting event in our country. The fact that our football club is officially associated with the AFC Asian Cup is a real honour and privilege.” Watch out for events hosted by Baulkham Hills Football Club at Ted Horwood Reserve (across the road from Baulkham Hills Sports Club) and by Bankstown Sports Stars Football Club at Bankstown City Sports Complex.

Pole Vault – Jack Hickin (Image: Mario Andreacchiog )

Vault of a lifetime Bankstown Sports Senior Athletics Club member and 2012 London Olympian Youcef Abdi orchestrated a “Bankstown Invitational” athletics meet at the Crest earlier this year, where five athletes qualified for the World Junior Championships and two for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. One of the qualifiers, Bankstown Sports Athletics Club pole vaulter, Jack Hicking, cleared the world junior height of 5.05m, achieving a personal best along the way.
