The change of seasons not only heralds the onset of warmer weather but also good news about all the exciting activities at our venues, in Bankstown, Birrong and Baulkham Hills.

In June, the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage held a special event at the Sydney Opera House entitled “Energy Productivity in Action 2015”.

Mark Condi, our Chief Executive Officer was invited to represent the club at this event, where we were recognised for the energy efficiency measures we’ve introduced. We were pleased to receive a special acknowledgement and award. This recognition encourages us to keep introducing energy efficiency measures in most new development projects we undertake.

If you love chocolate, you will be happy to learn that Bankstown Sports Club will soon have a chocolate café for everyone to enjoy. Having entered into an agreement with Chocolateria San Churro, by the end of this year you will be able to enjoy a selection of couverture chocolate treats made from authentic Spanish recipes including churros with chocolate, ice cream sundaes, chocolate fondue, decadent truffles, shakes, desserts and more.

The chefs at Greenfield Station Bistro, Platform One and La Piazza have been developing and testing new menus for your enjoyment. The new menus have now been perfected and introduced, so make sure you try some of the dishes on offer.

As one of the leading community clubs, Bankstown Sports Club has a tradition of supporting the community and is represented on a ClubGRANTS Committee both in Bankstown and The Hills Shire.

This edition of the magazine has a story on how we support the community and I would encourage you to read the piece so you get to know where the funding is directed. Your club gave over $2 million back to the community at the end of the ClubGRANTS cycle in August 2015. Over the last ten years the contribution is $22 million.

ANNUAL Y 10 CITIZE EAR AWARDS NSHIP DINNER

In May of this year, I was pleased to attend the Zonta Club of Sydney West’s Annual Year 10 Citizenship Awards Dinner, along with fellow Director Alex Fulcher. We assist a wonderful group of ladies who devote their time and energy to encouraging and empowering young women in 12 of our schools to get involved in projects both locally and internationally to increase their awareness of issues affecting women globally. I also had the pleasure of attending the Recreation Sports and Aquatics Annual Presentation Day on 21 June 2015, along with Directors Alex Fulcher and Martin Klumpp. This organisation does remarkable work providing recreational services to people with a disability. As usual the entertainment was provided by the clients they serve. I can assure you that their performance was both touching and outstanding.

Never taken FOR GRANTED Our community is our priority and ClubGRANTS are our way of giving back.

Every year, money given by clubs to support our community, changes lives. They’re known as ClubGRANTS and they have become a vital lifeline to help people most in need.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Condi says, “We have an amazingly diverse community in the Bankstown local government area.

“About 8,500 people move into the area every five years. We have a higher proportion of babies, youths and the elderly than greater Sydney and our community is very multicultural with high proportions of Lebanese, Vietnamese and Chinese Australians.

“Just under half of the population earns less than $600 per week and of the total population, more than 6 per cent – or over 11,000 people – have a severe disability. So, as you can see, our community requires our support and benefits from our support.”

The local ClubGRANTS committee is made up of 11 not-for-profit clubs, including Bankstown Sports Club, Bankstown Sports Bowls, Birrong Sports, Revesby Workers, Bankstown RSL, Bankstown Trotting and Recreation, Mount Lewis, Chester Hill RSL, Panania Diggers, Padstow RSL, Bass Hill RSL, Bankstown City Council and delegates from the Department of Family and Community Services and the National Council of Social Services.

Our support, in the form of annual grants, helps children and adults with disabilities; migrants and refugees needing help to learn English or other support in adjusting to a new country; teenagers making the sometimes fraught transition into adulthood and the elderly to enjoy a full and comfortable life in their autumn years.

This year local clubs are funding 76 projects for more than $1 million, that’s a seventeenand-a-half per cent increase on funds from last year. The cheques were presented to the recipients at a combined clubs event on 6 August in The Grand Ballroom.

Bankstown Sports Club, Birrong Sports and Bankstown Sports Bowls have supported 36 projects for a total of $493,588, which is 47 per cent of the funding pool and an increase on last year.

Clubs are always looking for ways to make a difference in their communities. Last year, registered clubs in NSW gave more than $100 million to their local communities through ClubGRANTS, that’s $40 million more than clubs are required to give under the scheme.

And, since 1998, when the scheme began, clubs have given close to 1 billion dollars to tens of thousands of local community groups, charities and grassroots sporting teams, making the scheme one of the largest and most effective grants programs in Australia.

In tune since 1974!

In February 41 years ago, Judy Learmonth was handed a flyer about a choir that her friend had joined. By April, she was a member of the choir herself. The choir was called Bankstown Town Hall Choir and it was in its first year of operation.

Renamed Bankstown City Choir in 1986, the choir has remained a constant feature of the community landscape and one that has brought joy to many people.

Judy and her husband Gordon are two of four life members of the choir which holds rehearsals at 7.30pm every Tuesday night at Georges Hall Community Centre and performs at 10 nursing or retirement homes a year on Sunday afternoons.

“Even people with dementia can pick up music,” Judy says. “When my mother had dementia my husband Gordon and I would sing I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles to her and she would tap her hands to the beat.”

concertgoers that we have built up over the years, so we send them flyers and also do letterbox drops. It takes up a lot of time, but Gordon and I have done it for years, so it’s not difficult.”

Judy’s favourite memory about her involvement with the Bankstown City Choir is when they went to compete in the International Eisteddfod in Wales in 1987.

“Our founding conductor, Betty Fitzgerald, had a vision of the choir performing in England, Scotland and Wales,” Judy says, “So we went and were billeted out to stay in the homes of people from the towns that we sang in.”

Judy is a passionate singer and performer, also being involved in many other singing groups. She has performed in Handel’s Messiah at Sydney Town Hall, in various musical shows and even tap dances on occasion.

“I’m not one to give up,” Judy says, “I find it very easy to remember the words to songs.”

Judy’s favourite song is I dreamed a dream from Les Miserables that she sang at the choir’s 40th anniversary concert last year in the Brian Brown Theatre. The concert was funded by Bankstown Sports Club and all proceeds were given to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation.

“I’ve seen Les Miserables six times,” Judy says. “Marina Prior sang some songs from Les Miserables at her concert with the five Australian Tenors that was on at the club in May. Gordon and I were celebrating our 56th wedding anniversary that night.”

The Bankstown City Choir is happy to accept new talent into their choir of 29 performers.

“We are always looking for new members, particularly men – they’re as scarce as hen’s teeth!” Judy says. “There are no formal auditions – all you have to do is be able to sing in tune.

Our repertoire is from Brahms to Broadway.”

Bankstown Sports Club proudly supports the Bankstown City Choir’s activities through the ClubGRANTS program. While grants to the organisation are usually modest, the money makes a very big difference to the community.

The choir provides respite through musical entertainment for the benefit of 400 to 500 people aged 55 and over every year. Through song, the choir alleviates isolation and confinement and lifts people’s spirits.

The choir also holds two public concerts a year, the last one being ‘We Remember’ in June.

“It was a good crowd, there were not many vacant seats,” Judy says. “The $15 entry fee covers the cost of hall hire, and the honorarium of the conductor and accompanist. We have a database of

School of thought Building resilient and positive communities often begins with educating young people.

For students whose parents or parent are struggling to make ends meet, having the extra money to take part in a school excursion or sporting activity can make an enormous difference to their confidence and academic achievement.

It’s the same for students heading into the challenge of their HSC, having stable friendships among their peers can help to get them over the line.

Bankstown Sports Club has a history of supporting the school students of the area, from infants through to high school, in a wide variety of ways.

Whether it’s a shade sail for a playground, speech pathology to help children starting to read, new turf to make a hard, dusty playground safer to run on or helping take some adolescent boys to the snow for the first time, the club is happy to give back.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Condi says, “We are humbled every day by how much an often modest amount of money can make a difference to the life of a child – and that’s because our local schools are run by such committed teachers and leaders. Some might describe this area as disadvantaged but we don’t feel that way. The work ethic and the pure passion for education is an enormous advantage to children growing up in this area.”

BANKSTOWN PUBLIC SCHOOL Bankstown Public School, which is just behind the club, also has a special relationship built over many years. One of the links is the fact the club is located on top of Sweethaven Street, literally where the school’s entrance used to be.

The school is celebrating its centenary this month, with an open day on 12 September and a Centenary Dinner in The Grand Ballroom on 19 September.

The club has helped the school to produce a special publication “A Brief History of Bankstown Public School 1915-2015” showcasing their history in the local community and the school’s motto “A Good Name Grows”.

Mark Condi says, “This is a landmark event for the area and the school. We’re very proud of all our neighbourhood schools and, in particular, having been able to help Bankstown Public School with many projects over the course of our histories together.”

BANKSTOWN GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL The club has supported Bankstown Girls High School for 10 years through a scholarship program worth $14,400 annually for girls in Years 7, 9 and 11.

“Students showing either sporting or academic promise, who otherwise might struggle, are helped to realise their potential through four scholarships in each age group,” Mark Condi says.

The relieving principal at Bankstown Girls High, Mark Leary, says the club’s contribution makes an enormous difference to the girls.

“We are extremely grateful for all the support

we have received from the club in the past decade – and their recent commitment to continue the scholarships into 2016-17.”

PUNCHBOWL BOYS HIGH SCHOOL Another longstanding connection which has delivered real benefits to young people is Punchbowl Boys High School’s S.T.A.R. program.

Readers of InTouch will be well aware that the program helps young ‘at risk’ boys entering the final years of school to stay at school and complete their HSC. The club’s support for the program was recognised last year with a Clubs and Community Award from ClubsNSW. The program, which has been running for seven years, has given more than 200 students a chance to either go out into the bush for three days in Sydney’s National Park, or to go to Canberra and the Snowy Mountains. The activities aim to give the students confidence, provide new experiences and encourage them to build bonds that will keep them in high school longer.

Punchbowl English teacher Joseph De Guia says, “Because of this program, we have a dyslexic student who is now about to become a carpenter, scores of boys have been inspired to grind their way through university and other tertiary education, some are serving in the military while one is pursuing his dream of playing in the NRL.” The club is continuing to support the S.T.A.R. program, giving $7,900 this year to help offset the cost of taking the students on camp and $1,500 for the school to buy a new galvanized box trailer and other equipment.

Your club is about to don the hardhat again for a round of upgrades which will deliver unforgettable results to members.

US President Benjamin Franklin once said, “When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.” As club members will know, Bankstown Sports Club is constantly changing and adapting to keep its members surprised, delighted and proud to be associated with the club.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Condi says our members’ responses and feedback to previous changes, such as the new Atrium Bar, The Theatre, the upgrade to Greenfield Station Bistro and the gaming area, has been incredible. “Members enjoy better facilities and they show it with their increased patronage,” Mark Condi says.

THE CHARMS OF CHOCOLATE The club will soon have a venue exclusively for those with a sweet tooth. It seems that just about everyone loves chocolate.

Scientists say it’s the abundance of the muscle relaxing magnesium found in the popular cacao bean that makes it so inviting – but most people probably just enjoy the flavour. And there are so many ways to consume chocolate – it goes so well with so many of the best things in life, like strawberries, champagne, coffee and churros.

So, it’s music to our ears that the club is bringing the dessert flavours of Spain to members when Chocolateria San Churro opens its doors in December.

Says Mark Condi, “The menu is really exciting.

Not only do they do the traditional Spanish churros – a bit like a donut but stick-shaped – that you can dip in chocolate or caramel – but there are loads of other delicious sweets to share among the family. My own kids are really looking forward to this!”

The menu also includes couverture hot chocolate, chocolate fondue, decadent truffles, ice cream sundaes, shakes, smoothies, and even a melting chocolate volcano – and these can all be shared. Customers will also be delighted to know that the cocoa used in San Churro’s couverture chocolate is Fairtrade - so each indulgence will be contributing to the improvement of a cocoa farmer’s livelihood.

“Our members can either visit the chocolateria as a destination in itself – or after eating at one of our soon-to-be-ten unique dining venues – pop by for a sweet treat. I know many families will want to come and top up after spending hours at Monkey Mania,” says Mark Condi.

Construction is underway and expected to be completed before Christmas.

Members will be able to see the chef at work in the new restaurant.

“When we hold the Grand Opening for Lucky Cheng’s, we will actually be bringing out The Grand Noodle Master from Taiwan to preside over the occasion.”

Another element which is new to the club will be the ability to either eat-in or takeaway – and you will be able to take your food and eat it anywhere inside the club, Mark Condi says.

Everybody loves noodles and the club has looked far and wide to introduce our sophisticated patrons to something quite special – handmade noodles, soups and dumplings, influenced by the flavours of Northern China at a new venue to be called Lucky Cheng’s.

Mark Condi says, “These new changes are Stage 1, of a bigger Asian precinct for the club. I’m really excited about Lucky Cheng’s because fresh, handmade noodles and dumplings are quite another level up in flavour from pre-made ones.

“Given our proximity and connections with Asia, there’s a big move towards handmade noodles and dumplings here. Apart from a delicious meal, there’s quite a bit of theatre involved in preparing and serving the noodles which makes it a lot of fun to watch.

Lucky Cheng’s will be built in the area to the left of the Rainforest Lounge’s ladies restrooms.

“At the moment that is an overflow seating area of the intouch café,” says Mark Condi. “The new restaurant will stretch back towards the entrance to the The Grand Ballroom.”

As a result, there will be a few changes to the Rainforest Lounge’s Bar too. “The bar, which is very large and quite under-utilised, will be redesigned to make it more compact and much better for patrons. It’s been shown that well-designed bars allow for faster service of more people,” says Mark Condi.

As part of the upgrade, a new spiral staircase will be built between the Rainforest Lounge and the Total Sports Bar beneath it.

Work on Lucky Cheng’s is expected to be completed before Christmas – so prepare for a new flavour sensation just in time for the holidays.

TRAVELODGE HOTEL From taking part in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to donating pre-loved hotel bedding to the local animal shelter, there is no shortage of community spirit at Travelodge Bankstown.

Last winter the Travelodge Bankstown donated 100 blankets to Save Our Strays animal welfare charity after replacing old for new.

Work on the hotel’s building upgrade is also well underway, with one of the largest construction cranes ever seen on the Bankstown City skyline hard at work adding four additional floors to the hotel.

Always a hive of activity, staff at the Travelodge Bankstown have been especially busy over the past few months with fundraising, getting social on Facebook, donating used blankets to charity and doing their bit to help guests from the charity Little Wings feel a little more comfortable.

Little Wings provides free flights to and from Sydney for sick country kids and their families.

Travelodge Bankstown has been supporting the children’s charity since it began operation in 2012, by providing discounted accommodation, usually for one or two nights, before the children and their families fly home to regional or rural New South Wales.

Hotel Manager Renee Sprange says, in the past year, a number of children and their families have stayed at Travelodge Bankstown with us.

“It’s sad to see how many families with sick children need to come to the city for treatment, so the Travelodge team and I try and make their stay a little more fun by putting balloons and colouring books in their rooms.”

In May this year there were plenty of special treats on hand during the Biggest Morning Tea held at Travelodge Bankstown, with more than $220 raised for the Cancer Council Australia. Staff donated treats for Travelodge Bankstown guests, Bankstown Sports Club staff members and patrons.

The community spirit was also on show when the hotel recently upgraded its range of decorative pillows. Not only do the guest rooms have a fresh new look now, but the old pillows are giving comfort and warmth to the animals of the local RSPCA shelter at Yagoona.

“It’s nice to know things like blankets and pillows that we don’t need anymore are going to a place where they can be of use.

I’ve been told the animals love the pillows, they can play with them and also sleep on them,” Renee says.

The renovations will also include a new foyer and dedicated reception area for the hotel, with work set to begin on the foyer in the coming months. All of the work is expected to be completed about this time next year.

A new menu at La Piazza means

Few people know the regions of Italy like Mario Libertini – La Piazza’s dedicated restauranteur of eight years.

As I join him to explore Stuzzichino’s and Pizzeria Bellucci’s new menu and find out about some terrific new lunch specials, Mario points out, with a smile, that the menu covers all parts of the boot – from North to South, East to West.

Rome is in the cosmopolitan centre and has the best of everything. It’s an amazing city with incredible people.”

As we talk food, I see a couple eating their spaghetti with gusto – they twirl the pasta around their forks in the classic way, using their spoons as the anchor point. Coupled with the clothes hanging on a line above us and the cobbled stones below my feet, it’s like being back in Italy.

“The foods of each region are as diverse as the people,” Mario says.

“In the north, you have the influence of Switzerland and the people are fairer in colouring – when you go South, the rugged, more swarthy Italians emerge. Of course,

The new menus have delivered some new dishes for everyone, including vegetarians and those wanting gluten-free options.

“These days we are getting more requests for gluten-free and it doesn’t take much imagination to make it work. There are several new options including a gluten-free Penne Pasta on the menu and Verdura Alla Griglia (chargrilled veggie stack) – so we’ve got all the bases covered.”

The trend in dining out today is sharing food.

“So much has changed, even in the last decade.

People want to be able to expand their palate when they go out to eat. They don’t want to be limited to one option. A little of this and a little of that makes the meal more enjoyable.”

The Stuzzichino tapas menu provides for everyone from those who eat like a bird, right up to ravenous carnivores.

The other thing Mario has noticed in Australian cuisine is that people want the food to “speak for itself” – simple preparations using extremely fresh, high quality ingredients. There’s been a move away from heavy sauces.

“Our Barbequed Seafood Plate and our Chargrilled Chicken with Seasonal Vegetables are two great examples of this.” And, says Mario, the palate for chilli has really changed.

“I think because of the influences of Thai and Indian food, people just want more spicy flavours and I’m the same – a little sizzle goes a long way.”

The newest salad on the menu contains a healthy dose of chilli and also bears his name, Insalata di Mario.

“It’s a robust salad with lots of grilled eggplant, mushrooms, artichokes, tomato, green leaves, olives, croutons, parmesan, pesto and fresh chilli.”

“This is sort of a special salad I would make up for my regulars, it wasn’t on the menu. But it has become so popular through word-of-mouth, that I decided to add it. It could be a meal on it’s own but it’s also perfect for sharing in the centre of the table.”

It’s a must-try for me, even though I have already been nibbling on one of my favourite starters, the stuffed jumbo green olives – Olive Ascolani.

Mario heads to the kitchen briefly and before long we are sharing the beautiful, fresh salad which certainly has a warm kick to it. It’s delicious.

Stuzzichino specialises in fresh seafood, so for the main, I choose the grilled wild Barramundi.

This is a succulent, weighty portion of fish. The skin is crispy from the grill and the flesh, pure white and juicy. The Romans would be envious.

Pizzeria Bellucci open as normal 12pm – 4pm (no bookings).

Mario says families find it so easy here. “They come and eat our tasty woodfired pizzas or pasta, then they enjoy a gelato or a cannoli – it’s all at their fingertips.”

The other attraction of La Piazza is that since July the outdoor area has become a nonsmoking zone. “That means families can sit out there now and have a meal in the fresh air – al fresco as we say in Italian. It’s great for parents with children.”

Another reason to visit La Piazza is the Monday to Friday lunch specials which have already started and run until 13 November. In Pizzeria Bellucci for just $15, you can eat either a pizza or a pasta and it comes with garlic bread and a soft drink.

At Stuzzichino, between Tuesday and Friday lunch, for just $20, you can choose from three main meal options: John Dory Fillet, Osso Bucco or Cotoletta Milanese (a veal schnitzel from Milan in the Lombardia region) and it comes with garlic bread and a glass of wine or soft drink.

People who take advantage of the specials will go into a monthly prize draw to win a dinner for two valued at $100 (excluding drinks) and one night’s accommodation at the Travelodge Bankstown.

As our meal comes to an end, I am treated to a palette-cleansing lemon gelato paired with chocolate – the perfect ying and yang to finish a sublime meal. A quick latte and, unlike the Romans who would be preparing for a siesta, it’s a grazie and ciao to Mario – his smiling face alert as always to every need of his customers.

TO DO WELL Your club has received some recent positive recognition for our environmental credentials.

The club has been honoured at the Energy Productivity in Action (EPIA) 2015 awards, run by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH). At the awards, held at the Sydney Opera House on 18 June, NSW Environment Minister, Mark Speakman, congratulated Bankstown Sports Club as one of ten outstanding NSW businesses who have saved a combined $3.3 million annually by achieving greater energy efficiency whilst reducing their environmental impacts.

Electrical engineers Haron Robson initially approached the club in early 2012 outlining the OEH Energy Saver Program. Haron Robson was engaged, with support from OEH, to perform a level 2 Energy Audit.

As a result of the audit, the club prioritised a list of recommended areas of energy and cost savings.

Our Chief Executive Officer Mark Condi attended the event and said, “The cost of the

projects came to a total of $653,000 which was offset by a government contribution of $282,906. Since we implemented the program we have made savings of $500,000 a year or 1.5 GWh. This whole process has been incredibly valuable to the club and to our environment.

I would particularly like to thank Haron Robson for their work and the Federal Government for the financial support we received from the Community Energy Efficiency Program.�

The EPIA Awards are delivered by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage in association with the NSW Business Chamber, the Australian Alliance to Save Energy and the Energy Efficiency Council. The event showcases real-world examples of organisations that have achieved outstanding results from greater energy efficiency and is part of the NSW Energy Efficiency Action Plan that aims to deliver bill savings to those most affected by price rises and to further reduce pressure on future prices.

Aussie comedic greats have joined forces for a massive new show packed with fun and plenty of laughs.

Settle in for a hilarious night of entertainment as four ‘wogs’ from the western suburbs hit the road for a whole day - without their mums!

Starring some of Australia’s best established and new comedic talent – the undeniably hilarious Gabriel Rossi, George Kapiniaris, Logie-nominated comedian Tahir and special guest Umit Bali.

Well and truly on his way to becoming one of Australia’s most successful comedic exports, Gabriel Rossi accompanied Italo-Australian comic sensation, Joe Avati on three tours of the UK between 2000 and 2006.

George Kapiniaris has been making Australian ‘wogs’ and non-wogs alike laugh ever since his debut on TV’s Acropolis Now. In the years that followed, George took that cheeky genius to a raft of successful live stage shows including the

one and only Wogs out of Work. Never far from our Aussie screens, more recently George has appeared in a number of television shows including Underbelly, Kick, and Joker Poker.

Tahir has been a feature in all major comedy venues around the country and has made numerous television appearances – making him one of Australia’s busiest comedians. Tahir has also been named Comedian of the Year and been nominated for a Logie.

In 2004 he appeared in the fourth series of Pizza on SBS as the much-loved character, Habib and was part of the team in the hit Aussie movies Fat Pizza and Housos vs Authority.

The Melbourne Cup has been observed in Australia since the first race was held at the Flemington Racecourse in Victoria in 1861. The race was won by Archer, who won it again the following year.

Pathway program the right

DECISION FOR YOUNG REFS Mentoring the next generation of football referees is just one of the many contributions Jimmy Moreland has made in his years of community service.

Jimmy Moreland is a well-known face around Baulkham Hills Football Club (BHFC).

He holds the record as the longest serving player, is a life member of the club and is the driving force behind an innovative young referees training program.

“That young referee was out of his depth and making some incorrect decisions. We didn’t want to see that happening, so we started this program to give kids at least one year of being coached and supported as they learn,” Jimmy explains.

Throughout his years at the club Jimmy has served as club captain, player, coach, manager, age coordinator, referee, volunteer and mentor.

The hugely successful program started four years ago and has become the model for other clubs across the association. Most of the participants are girls and boys aged 12 or 13.

In his playing days, Jimmy received the Senior Sportsperson of the Year award in 1972, 1974 and 2009, Sports Club Player of the Year in 1974, and was part of the 1970 BHFC Challenge Shield winning team.

Since hanging up his playing boots in 2009, after 40 years, Jimmy volunteers tirelessly for both the BHFC and Riding for the Disabled Centre at Box Hill.

His achievements have been recognised with accolades including the Bankstown Sports Club Service to Sport Medal in 2013 and the 2014 inaugural Bankstown Sports Club Community Engagement through Sport and Recreation Award. He is also the patron of the BHFC’s newest perpetual award, The Jimmy Moreland Trophy for Coach of the Year.

As referee coordinator at BHFC, Jimmy, together with club secretary, Tony Hughes, realised the need for a training program for junior referees while watching a youngster officiating his first game.

Not only do the young people learn about refereeing, they build confidence and develop important life skills, like discipline and responsibility.

“Being a referee improves communication skills, voice control and understanding how to say things, especially when you are dealing with irate people on and off the field.”

After a year most referees achieve Level 4 qualifications and go on to be assistant referees as they continue to develop their skills.

“This program is only possible because of the support from parents and the executive committee of the football club, and my assistants Terry Minton and Cath Hughes.

We are also grateful for the support we get from Baulkham Hills Sports who assist with registration of our juniors and grant us access to club rooms for meetings and training courses,” Jimmy says.

InTouch asked special guest columnist, experienced florist and wedding planner, Tooti Kotkin, to share her tips on how to choose flowers that are a cut above the rest.

Spring is one of the best times of year to incorporate decorative flowers into the styling of an event. “All flowers and greenery create a range of different looks, so think about the purpose of your event and what sort of mood you want to create,” says Tooti.

Choosing wild flowers, amaranth, hydrangeas, succulents, smoke bush, even garden staples like lavender and rosemary can help create a warm, rustic feel. For a modern, earthy twist add decorative twigs and sticks, like willow, to the arrangements.

It’s best to choose flowers that are in season, as these are readily available and more cost effective than sourcing flowers out of season.

“For a corporate event, choose floral arrangements that are neat with sleek lines.

Flowers like aram lilies, calla lilies, orchids and even tulips can work well at a corporate event.

Also, consider the different colours of the flowers available and whether you can match these to your corporate branding.”

COCKTAIL EVENTS For cocktail-style events like Melbourne Cup, Tooti says elegant, uncluttered arrangements are best, so people can move around easily and socialise. A floral wall can be a creative way to display branding of event sponsors or simply be a stunning floral display.

WEDDINGS OR BIRTHDAYS For a wedding or birthday you have much more choice but for those who like to be on trend, rustic florals are popular.

For a classic floral style at any celebration, you can’t go past roses, hydrangeas, ranunculus and peonies. These are perfect for creating a romantic, lush and warm feel.

If you are looking for something different, hanging florals might be the answer.

“This can dramatically change the mood of a space, create interest and a beautiful vibe. It’s not suited to every venue or event, but it’s a great alternative and it means you can keep the rest of your arrangements lowkey,” she says.

Another way to create interest is to use arrangements of differing heights.

“Keep the flowers the same but have low, medium, and tall arrangements spread throughout the room. This is eye-catching and creates a lush textured feel.”

Good lighting is essential, especially if it’s an evening event.

THE EARLY DAYS OF BIRRONG

Foundation member Lex Peters remembers the early days of Birrong, a club founded on community and local sporting spirit.

With a proud history spanning more than 50 years, Birrong Sports is a fantastic destination for bowls fans, food lovers and anyone after a great day or night out.

Foundation member Lex Peters recalls the club’s modest beginnings, when the idea was first floated at an impromptu meeting outside the chemist’s.

“I was walking along the street and saw the meeting on the footpath, so I went over to see what it was about and they were talking about forming a sports club and I was involved from that day forward,” Mr Peters says.

In the early days, Mr Peters helped where ever he could, such as helping rustle up locals to get the necessary 200 members to form the club, to getting involved in assembling the first clubhouse and assisting with fundraising to fence the greens once they were completed.

Today, Birrong Sports has three beautifully kept bowling greens, The Italian Bistro restaurant and function area, TAB and a sports lounge. The not-for-profit club supports a range of sports including netball, golf, darts, soccer, baseball, bowls, basketball and Oztag.

In 2011, the club amalgamated with Bankstown Sports Club and has undergone updates to a range of facilities for members, including changes to the menu at The Italian Bistro and installation of larger televisions that screen all the big games.

1960 Birrong Chamber of Commerce held a meeting on the footpath outside a chemist to discuss the formation of a sporting club.

1961 Chamber of Commerce held a meeting in Birrong Hardware Store attended by 70 residents. Council supported a suggestion to build a bowling club with four greens adjacent to the swimming centre.

1962 Peter Copping was named first Club President, Frank Souter named Club Secretary, Jack O’Brien named Treasurer.

1964 First clubhouse was bought from Regents Park Bowling Club. It had to be moved in four sections to the Birrong Club site – the first section was moved on 16 February and the clubhouse completed on 18 March.

1964 First liquor licence granted at the club in September.

1965 Bowling club greens completed in January.

1965 Official opening of the clubhouse in February.

COMMUNICATION! For Rouse Hill resident Rosemary Hall, those three words represent the secret to a long and happy marriage, writes Andrew Brown.

That formula appears to have worked, with Rosemary and husband Kevin celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in April with a large party for family and friends at Baulkham Hills Sports Club.

The couple was married on 10 April 1965, at St Chad’s Church in Putney.

“It was the only church in Putney,” Mrs Hall said.

“It was a packed church but there were only 100 guests.”

They met while working at the ANZ Bank branch at West Ryde, and dated for almost a year before Mr Hall popped the question.

Working at the bank had its benefits, with the couple able to easily secure a loan for their first home in Greystanes.

“We built our own home which was unusual because most couples [back then] rented,” Mrs Hall said.

But their wedding wasn’t without a hitch, with a sudden change of weather threatening to ruin the wedding photos.

Great lengths were taken to get the archetypal photo of the bride and groom looking out the back of the wedding car.

“Once we were in the church it teemed with rain, it was one of those cloudbursts,” Mrs Hall said.

“So that we could have the photo in the nice, shiny car, people [wiped] down the car so we could do it.”

“Music is so powerful, one song can bring back so many memories for a person. I do adjust my set list depending on the type of crowd. You can tell what people are enjoying and playing music people love is very rewarding,” she says.

Gail began to play at the age of four and had her first piano lesson when she was seven years old. Gail has been a professional musician for 23 years, including the bands and duo she performed in before becoming a soloist.

Putting a smile on your dial Bankstown Sports Strikers Football and Birrong Sports Football Club are just two clubs who trialled healthy options at their canteens during winter.

The pilot project aimed to promote healthier lifestyle choices to the sporting community and this was encouraged by Bankstown Sports Club.

HEALTHY SNACK TIP Bethanie Allanson and Benita Lalor, who are both sports dietitians with the Australian Institute of Sport write, “It’s essential that athletes consume a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to support daily training and recovery from training. Fruit is a great snack and should be at the top of the snack list.

Fruit is a very nutritious source of carbohydrate, so is ideal before or after training to top-up fuel stores to assist training performance and recovery.”

Bankstown Sports Strikers FC secretary, Kylee Freeman, says “The project went really well.

Bananas and milk drinks were popular and adding various fruits each week sold really well.

The kids learnt through school what foods are bad and good so it is easy for them to identify when they come to the sporting fields.”

Birrong Sports FC introduced salad wraps to their canteen menu and created a fun atmosphere to promote the project. The club used a prop photo frame to show off their juniors showing their best smiles with pieces of fruit – called ‘Fruity Smiles’. Other sporting clubs under the Bankstown Sports Club umbrella also shared the idea within their clubs.

Showing the Spirit Bankstown Sports Club is delighted to assist two girls within the local community in the sport of Baton Twirling. Baton twirling is a sport which involves a high level of skill and extraordinary control, agility, coordination and flexibility whilst performing a dance.

A staff member of Bankstown Sports Club, Abbey McNab, says, “The discipline requires blending a mixture of elements – it is quite hard and challenging but I love it.”

Renae Edmunds, a Bankstown local, is focussed on the international championships in Canada and is proud to represent Australia.

Both girls aim to compete at the World Championships in Sweden in 2016.

Living by the motto, ‘Dreams only work if you do’, both are already on target and have the right approach.

The first bounce The Bankstown Sports AFL Club is up and running!

A big thank you to the volunteers and dedicated parents who have assisted in making this happen.

The club has two teams fielded both in the under-9s and under-10s competition. Both had their first play in the last weekend of June, participating in a gala day out at Blacktown Stadium, where they competed against teams across Western Sydney.

Club president Matt Oliver, whose son plays in the under-9 competition, says the day was a huge success with happy kids that love their footy.

The AusKick program takes place on Sunday mornings at the club’s homeground, Graham Thomas Oval, and many people have shown up to take part. It has been labelled as the largest AusKick program in Western Sydney.

A big congratulations to all volunteers for making this happen – it can only get better from here.
