Chairman’s Report

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT JOHN MURRAY, CHAIRMAN

“Greenfield Station Bistro won the Family Dining category and Atrium Bar took out Best Small Bar. The accolades are a testament to the hard work, time and effort put in by all staff at these two venues. Well done."

I would like to begin this edition by sincerely thanking all of our members and patrons for their support over the past year. Bankstown Sports and its associated venues have enjoyed another prosperous and productive 12 months, with renovations and upgrades to our facilities paving the way for a bigger and better club. We recently celebrated the grand opening of the Basement Brewhouse on 1 November, coinciding with our Melbourne Cup festivities, and I’m pleased to report the venue has been very well received by all who have visited. We are also nearing the final stages of construction for Peking Square, our new Asian dining precinct, which will provide our patrons with a new and unique dining experience in the Bankstown area. On the topic of dining, I would like to congratulate Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer and our Beverage team on their success at the 2016 Restaurant and Catering Awards, which recognises a business’ contribution to the food and beverage industry. Greenfield Station Bistro won the Family Dining category and Atrium Bar took out Best Small Bar. The accolades are a testament to the hard work, time and effort put in by all staff at these two venues. Well done. In September, Bankstown Sports was honoured to welcome Olympic gold medallist Chloe Esposito, her younger sister Emily, who is also a Commonwealth Games representative, and Rio Games marathon runner Milly Clarke, who all visited the club as guests of the Australian Commonwealth Games (NSW Division) AGM this month. Presidents and CEOs from all 18 sports involved in the Commonwealth Games met with club director Alex Fulcher and myself, for a delicious meal at Platform One, which was prepared by Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer. Chloe, who became the first Australian to win a medal in the modern Pentathlon over in Brazil, and Milly, who finished 18th in the marathon in Rio, both spoke to the group about their journey to the Olympics. Both girls were part of the Bankstown Sports Athletics Club while they were growing up, and began their running careers in the local area.

WELFARE REPORT December, January and February

I would like to congratulate all recipients of the 2016 Service to Sport Awards, who have been recognised for their hard work and dedication to their chosen activities. At the annual awards dinner held in The Grand Ballroom, Emma Newman was named Young Club Person of the Year and the Volunteer of the Year award went to Troy Freeman. Bankstown Sports Strikers Football Club has had a great year and was named Club of the Year, while four Service to Sport medals were presented to Joe Collister, Bernie White, Victor Gauci and Terry Webb. Well done to everyone who volunteered their time to help run one of our 42 associated sporting clubs this year, we thank you for your ongoing support. Our AGM was held on Monday, 7 November with positive results reported to the board and stakeholders. In the 2015-16 financial year, Bankstown Sports and its associated venues contributed $2.4 million dollars to local sporting and community groups. We carried our several key developments at the club including the construction of Basement Brewhouse and Peking Square, upgrades to Travelodge Hotel and intouch café. And finally, Christmas is only a few weeks away and there are plenty of activities happening at the club to keep the whole family entertained. Santa and our Christmas carollers will be visiting every Friday and Saturday night from the 16-24 December and we’ll have a special Christmas raffle on 22 December. We will also have Christmas Day buffet lunches at Platform One and Greenfield Station Bistro and I would encourage you all to come along. I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Stay safe throughout the festive season and into 2017.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of members who have recently passed away: Iris Nimett, John Theobald, Margaret Kelly, Ian Page, Keith Flynn, Kathleen Geer, Drago Supurovic, William Conen, Djohan Jandy, Joan Allison, Ross Thompson, Keith Little, Margaret Munsie, David Hart, Patricia Atkins, Joseph Guisande, Dulcie Tyson, Shirley Wilson, James McGowan, Patricia Genford, Marje Senyd, John J Bell, Gerhard Schwigtenberg, David Glen, Viv Weatherstone, Barry Willoughby, Violet Gartner, Laurence Orchard, Ian Richardson, Barry Clunas, George Wiltshire, Stanley Butler, Kevin A Dennis, Beresford Shipley, Rudolf Hass and Douglas Upton.

Welcome to

BASEMENT BREWHOUSE Bankstown Sports Club’s unique new venue Basement Brewhouse has impressed in its first few weeks in operation, with a huge range of craft beers tantalising the tastebuds of even the most seasoned drinkers! The Basement Brewhouse opened its doors in spectacular fashion on Melbourne Cup Day with over a thousand people walking through the doors to have a look at the venue, and to try our delicious burgers and gourmet cheeses and cured meats from the delicatessen. We sold over 500 pints on our first day of trade and our in-house Basement Brewhouse beers are proving extremely popular, with the Sparkling Ale the hottest item on tap. Plenty of people are already enquiring about booking tables for lunch, dinner and private functions and overall, the feedback we’ve received has been extremely positive.

FIRST IN-HOUSE BREWS After careful consideration, our team settled on a Pilsner, Sparkling Ale, a Pale Ale and an American-style Pale Ale, to launch our new microbrewery inside the Brewhouse. We wanted to find the right balance of flavours to give our customers a few different options to choose from, and we had to choose drinks that would appeal to a broad audience. As the Brewhouse was an entirely new concept for the Bankstown area, we knew introducing craft and boutique styles would take a little bit of getting used to. We

feel the selection we have chosen caters for both the adventurous and the traditional. We will be rotating our beverages tank-bytank, and on-demand. If our patrons love a particular style or flavour, we will take on their feedback and brew accordingly. We will also be aiming to change brews seasonally, introducing lighter styles in the warmer months and darker, richer offerings for the cooler months.

BURGERS & DELI Our burgers have been extremely popular since we opened, with the Mighty Brewhouse becoming our early best seller, as well as our signature Reuben sandwich. The sliders have been great too with people wanting to try a selection of our offerings. The garbage fries, loaded with pulled pork, sweet corn, shallots, crispy bacon, American cheesy sauce and picco de galo are a great option for sharing, as well as the meat and cheese boards which are also proving to be a hit.

CATERING FOR EVERYONE The Brewhouse really is a destination where there is something for everyone. There’s open-plan dining and lounge

seating for those who want to relax, booth-style seating for casual get-togethers, as well as secluded spots for an intimate drink. Our private rooms can accommodate both large and small functions and parties, with flexible set up arrangements and great catering options. And don’t think the Brewhouse is just for the boys! We’re serving a wide variety of beers that we feel appeal to women, just as much as men. There will also be cocktails and wine on tap available for those with a sweeter palate, or anyone wanting to finish their visit on a lighter note.

SOCIAL MEDIA The Basement Brewhouse is now on Facebook and Instagram with all the latest news information on our craft and boutique range, as well as upcoming events at the club. And for all the beer nuts out there, we are also a part of a beer-rating app called UNTAPPD, where you can ‘check-in’ your beers, see what other people are drinking at the Brewhouse and get alerts when new promotions begin. It’s a great way to connect with other people in the craft and boutique beer community.

“A really great place and much needed in the southwest Sydney region. Tremendous craft beer on tap and the food is second to none” – Phil Parish Basement Brewhouse – Bankstown Sports Bankstown Sports InTouch

SNAPPER WITH PEKING SAUCE

Asian dining, but NOT as you KNOW IT Peking Square will open its doors in December, putting a new twist on Asian cuisine. Our in-house noodle and dumpling chefs will serve up the freshest yum cha, alongside an extensive a-la-carte menu featuring the most creative Chinese street food offerings.

PEKIN

Peking Square, the newest dining precinct inside Bankstown Sports Club, will change the way you think about Asian dining. With so many offerings in the one place, you are guaranteed to find something to tempt everyone, whether it’s our yum cha, made fresh on-site, or something from our a-la-carte menu or our Peking duck oven. Our menus have been specially formulated with a focus on Asian fusion and authentic street food, and our Signature 8 specialty menu illustrates exactly that.

K TRIO

PORK SPA

RE RIBS

We begin with the Peking Square BBQ Trio; a tasting plate of crispy-skin duck, soya marinated chicken and honey-glazed pork. If you enjoy lamb, Hong Kong’s Typhoon Shelter-style cutlets are the perfect choice, or

perhaps the sautéed diced Wagyu beef tossed with cashews and spicy Kung Po essence is more your style? The pork spare ribs in Three Cup sauce are tender and juicy and have been tossed with basil, chilli and fried ginger, and then there are our seafood options which include lightly battered squid rolls, Singaporean-style lobster tail and deep fried whole snapper. The final dish on our Signature 8 is the Buddha’s Vegetarian Delight. The Peking Square a-la-carte menu features a wide variety of dishes, incorporating a range of different flavours, themes and cooking styles. There will be a set seafood offering including favourites such as soft-shell crab, satay king prawns, baby octopus and scallops, as well as a weekly market offering which will be subject

The chicken and meat dishes incorporate the traditional Chinese, with offerings such as crispy skinned chicken, Kung Po chicken with cashews, beef in black bean sauce and Peking style shredded beef, with a splash of modern creativity in the Little India curried chicken, beef with Wasabi and salt and pepper pork ribs. Our in-house Peking duck oven will produce juicy and succulent duck on-demand, for duck pancakes, duck sang choy bow, Peking Square sliders, duck spring rolls and crispy-skinned duck in sweet plum sauce. There will also be a range of sizzle iron plate dishes, as well as clay and stone hot pot items, and of course, the signature Peking Square Conpoy fried rice heads up our rice and noodle menu. And if you’re up for sampling a few different flavours, Peking Square also has a special

As well as the a-la-carte menu, Peking Square will have a yum cha service available where patrons will be able to order dumplings and noodles which will be made fresh by our in-house chefs. Our open-plan kitchen allows our guests to watch as their meals are created from scratch, before being delivered to their table. And finally, diners will have access to our Chinese tea house situated in the middle of the square, which will serve a range of traditional herbal teas. Peking Square is scheduled to open its doors in December and will take both bookings and walk-in’s. It will operate 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

We have launched our Community Fundraiser Movie Sessions in The Theatre, which is located inside the club, giving people the opportunity to get their friends, team mates or work colleagues together to raise money for a charity or sporting group. There are no costs to be outlaid by the organiser; they simply choose from a variety of different latest release movies on offer and Bankstown Sports will assist in promoting the session within the club. Tickets are charged at the normal rate of $10 for adults and $5 for children, with the organiser retaining $7.50 from every adult ticket and $2.50 from every child’s ticket, with payment made shortly after the session is held.

Helping Bankstown

YOUTH

Bankstown Sports Club is proud to contribute $22,500 through ClubGRANTS, to Youth Off The Streets to help fund five programs to help disadvantaged youth in the local area. Bankstown Youth Matters is a project that aims to upskill disadvantaged local youth to be engaged and productive members of the local community. It’s five main areas of focus are Bankstown Local Sisters – focusing on personal development for multicultural young women; a Youth Initiative Team – mentoring young leaders to coordinate local events; Mind over Matter – weekly fitness classes and workshops to increase physical and mental wellbeing; Drop-In Educational Sessions – workshops from guest speakers covering bullying, self-esteem and achieving life goals; and School Holiday Creativity – offering supervised arts and crafts workshops every school holiday period. These projects are aimed at empowering young people aged 12-25 from the local

Bankstown area and address a need for services for the culturally diverse community. It provides access to community health services, including drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs and family/relationship violence support. The Youth Matters project works to break the cycle of disadvantage by connecting young people with employment, personal development and training pathways to help them grow into productive young adults. The program has been running from 1 July 2016 and will continue until 30 June 2017, helping 160 young people from the Bankstown area. Bankstown Sports Club has been supporting Youth Off The Streets for a number of years through the ClubGRANTS scheme and feels this is a very worthwhile program to be involved in.

awards win! Bankstown Sports Club received two awards at the 2016 NSW Restaurant and Catering Awards, which were presented at a gala event at Luna Park’s Big Top in September. Bankstown Sports Club prides itself on offering a wide variety of premium dining options for our members and patrons, and we are proud to have had two of our venues recognised for their outstanding achievements in the food and beverage industry over the past year. Greenfield Station Bistro and Atrium Bar received top honours at the 2016 NSW Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence. The Bistro won the Family Dining category in the Sydney Metropolitan area. Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer was on hand to accept the award at Luna Park’s Big Top, and says he’s elated to have won! “We came close in the same category last year and we were up against some very tough

competition this year. Each restaurant in our group is very popular, and I’m thrilled that we actually came first!” Atrium Bar took out the Small Bar category for the second year in a row, and Beverage Manager Gareth Heard, says it’s great to be recognised at such a prestigious event. “These awards are one of the highlights of the year in the food and beverage industry. The best of the best come together to celebrate each other’s achievements, and it’s a real honour to have Atrium Bar be given a mention”. Bankstown Sports Club had several other restaurants named as finalists, including Platform One, Lucky Cheng’s, Stuzzichino and Pizzeria Bellucci. Bankstown Sports InTouch

NYE 2016 Get your dancing shoes on and get ready to disco the night away this New Year's Eve at Bankstown Sports! Welcome 2017 with a night of singing, dancing and celebrating in The Grand Ballroom...

New Year’s Eve is set to go off in style at Bankstown Sports Club, with singer, actress and TV personality Marcia Hines counting us down to 2017. The John Field Band will warm up the crowd as a 3-course dinner is served from 7.30pm in The Grand Ballroom, before the ARIA Hall of Famer takes to the stage for her Disco Inferno show. We caught up with Marcia ahead of her visit to Bankstown Sports, and she says her Disco Inferno show was actually the result of another production she’s been involved in recently. “I was doing a show called Velvet for most of last year and that was a disco-inspired show. It’s worked very well and I believe we’re going to take it around the world next year. I think the inspiration for this show came from that; the reaction we got from the songs we were performing was incredible. The songs are pretty cool and are all disco-themed; songs like Disco Inferno and Never Knew Love Like This Before. I can’t tell you too much otherwise there won’t be any surprises on the night!” Marcia says the energy from the songs in the show and the enthusiasm from the audience creates such a great atmosphere in the room. “I try and make the show as proactive for the audience as possible. I want them to be a part of it. I try and encourage them but as soon as the music starts, I don’t really have to do too much! 22

They just jump up and dance! So, bring your dancing shoes. It’s a fun show and hopefully everyone comes out and has a great time”. “If you want to dress up in your disco clothes you are more than welcome to, but most importantly just come and be happy. It is New Year’s Eve after all!’ Disco Inferno is high energy from start to finish, and Marcia admits she has no idea where she gets all of her energy from, after being in the music industry for so long. “It’s just what I do. This is the thing that I truly love in my career. I love doing my performances. I’ve been a musician since I was about 4 years old; I knew what I wanted to do back then and I didn’t have a stage mum, which was great. I had a mother who encouraged. So, when opportunities arose she would always talk to me about it and weigh up the pros and cons with me, and would then ask me what I thought. And I think that’s a great thing to have in a parent”. “I just love doing what I do. It’s my passion and I love looking into the audience to see how much fun they’re having, and it’s working a treat right now”. Bankstown Sports Club’s New Year’s Eve event kicks off at 7pm in The Grand Ballroom on Saturday, 31 December 2016. Tickets are $119 per person and include a 3-course meal and entertainment. The midnight fireworks will be shown live on the big screen.

NEW YEAR Bankstown Sports Club is celebrating one of the biggest events in the Chinese calendar with live music and entertainment for the whole family. Bring in the Lunar New Year of the Rooster in style with a celebration of culture, music and tradition at Bankstown Sports. Enjoy all the festivities as we mark the end of another year of hard work and wish everyone a lucky and prosperous year to come. Known in modern Chinese as the Spring Festival, this event marks the turn of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. In China, it is customary for families to gather for an annual reunion dinner and to thoroughly cleanse their homes to make way for good fortune in the year ahead. We’ll be celebrating at Bankstown Sports on the evenings of Friday, 27 January and Saturday, 28 January, when the God of Wealth and the Lion Dance will be travelling through the club wishing our patrons good luck for the year ahead. He will also be giving out red

Lunar r NewYea

envelopes with chocolate gold coins to our members and patrons for good fortunes, and to ward off evil spirits. Then on Tuesday, 31 January, there will be free entertainment in the Rainforest Lounge from 7.30-8.30pm, including traditional Chinese dancers, Sally Song who will delight the audience with ancient Chinese ribbon and fan routines, and singer Maggie Cheung who will perform a range of traditional and modern Chinese songs. There will also be a Tai Chi expert, the Mandarin Trio, a face change artist and a drum group who will lead a Lion Dance through the audience, and will finish with a spectacular pole climb. If you have never experienced an authentic Lunar New Year event, come down to Bankstown Sports Club and celebrate with us!

Christine Anu hits

rewind The Australian songstress is heading to Bankstown Sports for the first time in February, bringing her tribute to Aretha Franklin to the stage in spectacular style. One of Australia’s most popular recording artists, Christine Anu, is bringing the Queen of Soul to Bankstown Sports in February, performing her Rewind tribute to Aretha Franklin for all of her adoring fans. Boasting a successful music career spanning two decades, with platinum albums, sell-out musicals and roles in Hollywood movies, this will be the first time the 46year-old steps onto our stage to belt out memorable renditions of Respect, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Chain of Fools and Today I Sing the Blues. Asked why Aretha is her inspiration, Christine says she is “a true legend, which is why I’m always excited to sing her songs which are universally adored by everyone. Her magic introduced me to a whole new audience and for this, I will forever love her”.

The Rewind show toured nationally several years ago and received rave reviews, with critics describing Christine’s performance as ‘elegant, powerful and seductive’, and praising the show for ‘capturing and celebrating the high standard of live Australian music and artists today’. For those who love the songstress for her own music and style, you won’t be disappointed, with her most popular songs My Island Home and Sunshine on a Rainy Day rounding out the playlist. Rewind – The Aretha Franklin Songbook is touring for a limited number of dates in 2017, so get your tickets to the Bankstown Sports show on Saturday 25 February now. Tickets are $20 Members and $25 Non-members and can be purchased at BankstownSports.com or main reception.

It’s all happening at

Baulkham Hills Sports! Following the success of our first ever Degustation Dinner, we’re once again bringing you another fine dining experience in March. And in January, we’re hosting a Pirates and Princess Party for the kids! In recent months, we’ve noticed a lot of our patrons enjoy the finer dining options at The Gallery Restaurant, and often ask us about the best wine selections to suit their meals. This gave us the idea of hosting Degustation dinners, showcasing 5-courses of food which are paired with the ideal wines, to bring out the best flavours and textures. The first event, held on 20 October, featured a glass of sparkling pinot noir on arrival, followed by seared scallops with a pernod butternut and pea puree for entrée, which was matched with a Flying Fish chardonnay. This was followed by fish, veal and pork dishes, accompanied by white, red and Vermentino blends. The evening

Bankstown Bowls is holding its annual toy drive for the kids at the Children’s Hospital in Westmead and we want your help! Drop a toy to the club before 15 December and make a child smile this Christmas… Christmas is a time for giving, not just to our family and friends, but to those in the community who need our help. Bankstown Bowls is holding its annual toy drive again, collecting donations of gifts for the sick kids at the Children’s Hospital in Westmead. Last year, the club was able to collect almost 100 brand new toys which were taken to the hospital and handed out to the children. You should have seen the smiles on their faces! This year, we need your help! If you are able to contribute a gift for a sick child,

please drop in a new, unused and unwrapped toy into the club before 15 December. The Bowls Club is also holding a ham raffle to raise money for the hospital. Last year, staff, members and patrons raised $5,000, and we are hoping to break that record this year! T R O P E R S T R O SP WE SHARE THE NEWS FROM OUR SPORTING CLUBS

In this edition we look at the success of our newly re-instated AFL Club, we celebrate our Baulkham Hills Netball club’s 50th birthday and we recognise some major sporting achievements throughout the year and highlight the importance of our volunteers at our Annual Service to Sport awards. SERVICE TO SPORT AWARDS

Service to Sport Meda l recipient, Joe Collister

Bankstown Sports Club has celebrated another year of remarkable sporting achievements on and off the field, with its annual Service to Sport Awards dinner in The Grand Ballroom. On Monday, 24 October, members from our 42 associated sporting clubs gathered for a 3-course meal, to recognise the invaluable contribution our members and volunteers make to the local community. Bankstown Sports Little Athletics Club member Zach Facer received a signed GWS Giants jersey and scarf for his generous donation to the Little Wings charity in June. We also recognised junior Cricket Club coaches Lachlan Hunt and Jason Gauci for their incredible dedication to the sport, and their club. Young Club Person of the Year went to Emma Newman from the Bankstown Sports

le Athletics member, Bankstown Sports Litt r Zach Face

Women’s Cricket Club for her active and ongoing participation in club activities as a coach and volunteer, and Troy Freeman from the Bankstown Sports Strikers Football Club was named Volunteer of the Year, for generously donating his time and effort to serve his local community. Bankstown Sports Strikers Football Club was named Club of the Year for their development of junior sport in their local community. They have also been exploring several charity opportunities and this year donated their former club uniform to two different orphanages in Vanuatu and Myanmar. And finally, the highlight of the night saw four long serving members of Bankstown Sports and its associated venues recognised for their years of service to the sporting clubs. The Service to Sport Medal is our most prestigious accolade and is presented to

members who have given 20+ years of service as a volunteer. There were four recipients this year; Victor Gauci, Bankstown District Sports Junior and Senior Cricket Clubs (21 years); Terry Webb, Baulkham Hills Cricket Club (50 years); Joe Collister, Bankstown Sports Men’s Bowling Club (35 years); and Bernie White, Bankstown Sports Men’s Bowling Club (51 years). An engaging and entertaining night was had by all, with plenty of stories shared and great memories made. Bankstown Sports would like to wish all our associated sporting clubs the best of luck for the sporting year ahead!

AFL It’s been a big 12 months for the Bankstown Sports Junior AFL Club, which was only reinstated in 2015 after a two-year hiatus. The re-branded Bankstown Sports Bull Sharks’ first ever girls team made the semi-finals in their first full year of competition, and through a new relationship with the Sydney Al Noori Muslim school in Greenacre, they will be fielding an Under 17 boys team in 2017. The club also featured in a special news piece on SBS earlier this year, promoting the

new AFL Multicultural Program, which encourages students to include Aussie Rules in their weekly sports routines.

NETBALL 2016 marks the 50th year anniversary of the Baulkham Hills Netball Club. It started from humble beginnings back in 1966, when a group of women from the local cricket division decided to create a ladies’ basketball division to play in the Eastwood Ryde Association competition.

Bankstown Sports Ju nior Crick Lachlan Hunt and Jaso et Club coaches n Gauci (right).

Over the next few years as the basketball club began to attract more members, teams were registered with the Blacktown Association and in 1969, five of the club’s players were selected in Blacktown representative teams. Towards the end of that year, the Baulkham Hills Cricket and Recreational Club changed its name to the Baulkham Hills Sporting Club, and in 1970, women’s basketball was changed in Australia to netball, so the club then became the Baulkham Hills Netball Division. Within two years, they had been instrumental in forming a standalone Netball Association within the Baulkham Hills Shire.
