Chairman's Report

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT JOHN MURRAY, CHAIRMAN

2017 has been another incredibly successful year for our club and I would like to thank each and every one of our members who continue to support us, and share our vision for the future. We recently celebrated first birthdays for Basement Brewhouse and Peking Sq., as both venues continue to trade extremely well. We have also just completed the renovations to our café, providing a more usable and comfortable casual dining space for our members and guests.

AUBURN TENNIS AND RECREATION CLUB I am pleased to confirm our amalgamation with Auburn Tennis and Recreation Club has been approved by the state government. We will now get to work on revitalise the Chisholm Road venue and enticing locals back for a drink and a meal. The club has a great deal of potential and is buoyed by the popularity of the adjoining tennis courts, which are used weekly for social and competition games. I’m really looking forward to working with the team at Auburn as we embark on some exciting changes.

CORNERSTONE COFFEE & KITCHEN We have recently completed a major renovation of our café and we are thrilled with the new look and feel of the space now called Cornerstone Coffee & Kitchen. There was a need to improve the overall layout and functionality of the popular eatery to make it more user-friendly for our patrons, and I think the upgrade has achieved this. There’s a new menu and some delicious new food offerings for you to try, and we’ve

WELFARE REPORT December, January and February 2018

introduced self-serve drink areas and water points so customers can help themselves to fresh water whenever they like. Another new feature is the coffee roasting area where you will be able to see how our coffee is roasted to perfection before it is served to you.

SERVICE TO SPORT AWARDS Bankstown Sports Club hosted its 2017 Service To Sport Awards on Monday, 23 October in The Grand Ballroom and the night was a great success. Congratulations to Marcus Kearns from Bankstown Sports Men’s Bowling Club, David Campbell from Baulkham Hills Men’s Hockey Club, Hugh Davy from Bankstown Sports Men’s Social Golf Club and Keith Vallis from Baulkham Hills Football Club who were awarded the prestigious Service To Sport Medal for their ongoing service to our sporting clubs. We also acknowledged other hardworking members of our sporting clubs for their achievements throughout the year, which are explained in more detail on page 12 of this magazine.

CLUBS & COMMUNITY AWARDS Our club was also recognised for its contribution to the local community at the 2017 Clubs and Community Awards. We won the award for Support of Amateur Sport which recognises the facilities, training programs and support we give to our local sporting clubs. This is such an important achievement for

us, as our volunteers are our heart and soul and without them, a lot of grassroots teams wouldn’t be here. Thank you to all of our volunteers who generously give up their time for our clubs.

FLINDERS CENTRE We are pouring the final floors of our new office tower, with construction on track for a grand opening mid-next year. Our new tenants – UFC GYM and Flinders Centre Early Learning School – are finalising their designs for the layout of their new space, with fit-out to begin in the first few months of 2018.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Our AGM was held on Monday 6 November and I’m pleased to report we have recorded positive results overall for the 2016-17 financial year. Bankstown Sports and its associated venues contributed more than $2.75M to local sporting and community groups in the 12 months to July, through the ClubGRANTS scheme.

MERRY CHRISTMAS As we wind down towards the end of another great year, I would like to wish all of our members and guests a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe new year. We have plenty of activities planned for the Christmas holidays for the whole family to enjoy, and I would encourage everyone to come and visit during the festive season.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of members who have recently passed away: George Brouet, John Fogarty, Ronald Loades, Noeleen McCarthy, Phillip Leth, Peter Rohanna, Robert Klaiber, Jamil Malki, Wendy Potter, Colleen Mcloughlin, Alice Doolan, Zahieh Abdo, Stephen Dickinson, Chris Christodoulou, Leslie Lee, John W. Cripps, Maria Damianou, Brian Liddle, James Thornton, Giuseppe Baroni, Gwendoline Adams-White and Charlotte Gotty. The following members were reported as being in hospital and on behalf of our President, Directors and all our members we wish them a speedy recovery: Shane Mount.

I'll meet you at...

The new Cornerstone Coffee & Kitchen has been unveiled, bringing a fresh and new feel to our café dining option at Bankstown Sports. Our café is one of the busiest dining venues within our club. Serving coffee, light refreshments, main meals and sweets, it’s a popular meeting place for our members and guests to enjoy a catch up with friends or family in a relaxed and comfortable setting. Over the years, our club has grown into a premier entertainment and dining destination, and with that growth has come the need to upgrade and improve some of our facilities. In November, we launched Cornerstone Coffee & Kitchen, with a new layout, fresh décor and some exciting new food 4

Bankstown Sports InTouch

creations for patrons to enjoy. We have used the same designers who created Basement Brewhouse to streamline some of the key design techniques and concepts. The new colour scheme gives the venue a modern look, and flows on nicely from the Brewhouse theme. We have upgraded the servery area and have introduced special self-serve drink areas to improve the general flow of service. There is also a brand new coffee roasting area, where guests can see how our coffee is roasted before it is served.

Editorial

We have changed the seating arrangement to add a bit of variety, which will cater for both large and small groups. There’s now a mix of private booths, banquettes, long communal tables and smaller, more intimate tables, which has really opened up the current space and made it more appealing.

NEW MENU We’ve taken a slightly different approach with the food offering in Cornerstone Coffee & Kitchen, keeping some of our customers’ favourite dishes, but adding some new, fresh, healthy options for people to enjoy. For breakfast, there’s a range of freshly squeezed juices and smoothies; the Breakfast Wakeup Shake is perfect for people on the go, who want something quick and easy that will fill them up, and the Nutella smoothie is incredible if you’re after a sweet treat! We’ve introduced our signature breakfast The

Cornerstone, with toasted sourdough, labneh, two poached eggs, grilled halloumi, roasted garlic mushroom, smoked Tasmanian salmon, avocado, herb salad and hollandaise sauce. If you’re after a light meal or a snack, there’s our Garlic Turkish Loaf, Chorizo Bruschetta, Soup of the Day, Arancini, Tuscan Meatballs or Corn on the Cob. For something a little more filling, try our range of freshly-made Burgers, Pulled Chicken Quesadilla, Salt & Pepper Squid, Salmon Poke Bowl, Fried Chicken Wings or the Tasting Platter for Two. There’s even something for the kids with a special menu for the little ones to choose from. You can always design your own salad or sandwich, which is made fresh right in front of you. There’s a wide variety of breads, fillings and dressings to choose from, to either eat in or takeaway. Cornerstone Coffee & Kitchen is open 7 days a week from 7am. Bankstown Sports InTouch

There are so many great reasons to be a member of Bankstown Sports and our associated venues and we’ve made a few changes to our renewals process to make it even easier for members to be part of our clubs. In 2017 we introduced our annual membership system, which means memberships will now expire exactly 1, 3 or 5 years from the date of renewal, instead of 30 June, as it was previously. So, if you signed up in the month of January, your membership will be up for renewal in January. We have now made it a lot easier to renew and update your details with us, thanks to the launch of our new membership portal. We have created an online system which allows you to renew online, and make changes on your personal profile. It means you will be able to update your contact details and your communication preferences, whenever it suits you.

Plus, renewing your membership now gives you the option to take advantage of our NEW Digital Membership. By joining our digital membership group, you are agreeing to have all communications that would have previously been posted to you, to now be emailed to you. This will help us to be a more sustainable organisation, as cutting down our postal mailouts will mean we can significantly reduce our paper usage. And the best part about updating your preferences to digital communication only, is the discount you receive!* To renew via the online portal, please visit BankstownSports.com/RenewNow Otherwise, you can still renew in person or via post. Please keep an eye out for the renewals information that will be sent to you two months before your membership is due for renewal. *Digital Discount only available to renewing members at the time of renewal.

Bankstown Sports has been recognised for its contribution to grassroots sporting clubs at the 2017 Clubs & Community Awards. The 2017 Clubs & Community Awards were held at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour on Sunday, 15 October, recognising the outstanding social contributions made by clubs in their local communities. There are thousands of stories about the amazing relationships clubs have with their local communities, and this event is a chance to share them. Bankstown Sports has been recognised for its contribution to grassroots sporting clubs, after winning the Support of Amateur Sport Award. This award category acknowledges the encouragement of amateur sport by a club through the provision of facilities, training programs, financial support and/or the contribution of club staff to assist sporting groups.

we announce our Young Club Person of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Club of the Year. We also present our Service to Sport Medal for those volunteers who have dedicated more than 20 years of service to their respective clubs.

Our entry was based on our annual Service to Sport Awards event, where we recognise the contribution our volunteers make to our 43 associated sporting clubs.

Our entry was based on our annual Service to Sport Awards event, where we recognise the contribution volunteers make to our 43 associated sporting clubs. Each year, more than 190 core volunteers are invited to a special presentation night at our club where

Our volunteers are the backbone of our sporting clubs and without them, local grassroots sporting teams would not exist. Bankstown Sports provides financial and in-kind support directly to our associated sporting clubs, and we also assist with additional support from our dedicated Sport and Community team.

The Service to Sport dinner is attended by our Board of Directors, CEO and Senior Management and gives our volunteers the chance to relax, unwind and network with like-minded volunteers from other sporting clubs. It is an event that our key volunteers look forward to every year and they say the recognition and acknowledgment is one of the reasons they keep coming back, year after year. We highlight this year's recipient's on page 12.

Service to Sport

MEDAL & AWARDS 2017 We celebrated another year of hard work, dedication and the remarkable achievements of our volunteers from our 43 associated sporting clubs. On 23 October 2017, The Grand Ballroom was transformed into an authentic German Brauhaus for our annual Service to Sport Medal and Awards night, to honour our volunteers and celebrate the success of our associated sporting clubs, both on and off the field. Guests were treated to a 3-course German feast, our limited-edition Basement Brewhouse Helles Biere, and entertainment from Alpen Akustik. Our first award of the night was for Community Engagement through Sport and Recreation, which went to Birrong Sports Football Club. This club has revitalised their relationship with local schools through community gala days and competitions, and

helped to revamp Jim Ring Reserve. They have also managed to increase their player numbers by 250 per cent in the last seven years. James ‘Brownie’ Brown from the Bankstown Sports Cycling Club took our Young Club Person of the Year for his dedication to coaching junior members. Brownie has increased junior participation at the club by 300 per cent over three years, and gives up a lot of his time to mentor young cyclists. He is also now developing his skills as an event organiser and MC, and is a regular presenter at club and state events. A special video was produced for Brownie's award win, you can see this on the Bankstown Sports or

Tennis Club for his leadership over the past 12 months.

Our Volunteer of the Year Award went to John Webbey, who has been involved with Birrong Sports Football Club for 17 years. John coaches several teams and coordinates all junior football at the club, and is also an active member of the club’s board and organising committee. He has also been a key factor in boosting player numbers.

It was then time to acknowledge those volunteers who have gone above and beyond for our clubs for over 20 years, with our Service to Sport Medals. Our first recipient was David Campbell who has been the president of the Baulkham Hills Men’s Hockey Club for 27 years, and has been one of the main instigators in driving its success.

The next award went to Baulkham Hills Hockey Club who were named Club of the Year for their outstanding work with the local community, their ambition to achieve good results in our GOAL program, and for their successful umpiring program which now sees them provide umpiring support to other clubs and schools.

Keith Vallis was also presented a medal for his involvement with Baulkham Hills sporting clubs for more than 50 years. He has generously given up his time for the local cricket and football divisions, and was a founding director of the licensed club.

We also recognised several other volunteers for their contribution to their chosen sports. 15-year-old Jessica Boulais from Bankstown Sports Netball Club and 26-year-old Keeley Allen from Birrong Sports Netball Club not only play for their clubs, but also give up their time to coach and umpire games every week. Jenny Stone from the Bankstown Sports Strikers Football Club is still serving as President, even though her two children no longer play there, and Michael Clunie from Bankstown Sports

Marcus Kearns was our next recipient, and he was acknowledged for his service to Bankstown Sports Men's Bowling Club. He served as a volunteer since 1985 and has held several committee positions, while also acting as a mentor for new members and guests. And finally, Hugh Davey was recognised for his 34-year support of Bankstown Sports Golf Club. He has been an active member since he joined in 1982, organising games, preparing golf cards for every single member, and helping to prepare start and results sheets. Congratulations to all of our medal and award recipients. Bankstown Sports InTouch

Doing our bit for the

ENVIRONMENT We aim to recycle as much as we can at Bankstown Sports Club and all of our associated venues, including our glass products. For the past 11 years, Bankstown Sports and Baulkham Hills Sports have been using the BottleCycler glass management system, which is a quiet, environmentally friendly bottle crusher that manages our waste glass safely and efficiently. Bottles from all of our bars and restaurants go straight into BottleCycler machines at the back-of-house, where they are processed for recycling on the spot. It was so effective, we introduced it to Birrong Sports in 2011 and Bankstown Bowls in 2016. The Bowls Club has been recycling their bottles for a lot longer than this though, as they have been transporting their used glass up to Bankstown Sports Club each week to use their BottleCycler. This system has removed the risk of injuries associated with heavy lifting and broken glass, and has also eliminated the need for our employees to double-handle our glass waste and empty bins manually. The BottleCycler can process up to 80 bottles per minute and there is no need to remove any corks or labels, which means our clubs are saving time and money.

NOW

Aussie rockers Thirsty Merc are back on the road and they’re bringing their new tour to Bankstown Sports Club in January. They’ve had hits like Someday Someday, In The Summertime, 20 Good Reasons and Emancipate Myself, they’ve just recorded their fourth studio album and they sold over 200,000 albums.

“We’ve got lots more experience than when we started. We’ve also still got loads of energy and we want to harness that energy to work hard, around the clock, to continue touring and making good music”.

It’s safe to say the boys from Thirsty Merc have been pretty busy, and now to celebrate 15 years as one of Australia’s best rock bands, they’re heading back out on the road for their Take Me Back Tour. Lead singer Rai Thistlethwayte says they haven’t really stopped since 2002, and they’ve learned so much over the years.

Rai is also promising fans their newest release returns to the rock roots they unleashed on their first record. “A really important element for us is going into the same headspace of where it all began, and we’re lucky enough to be working with producer Lindsay Gravina, who helmed our first album”.

The band has taken quite a unique approach to their new album, utilising crowdfunding platform PledgeMusic to help fund the recording process, rather than going through a record company. The response was overwhelming and Rai says they reached their goal within 48 hours of the 75-day campaign. “We were completely blown away. It was insane! We love crowdfunding because it allows us to work directly with our fans. We’re prepared to work hard, we’re in control of our material and we won’t be cutting corners in making quality music”. Thirsty Merc will be performing in The Theatre at Bankstown Sports Club on Saturday 20 January. There will also be a special performance by rock band Hiaground (approx. 40 mins). Tickets are $25 each. To book, visit BankstownSports.com/live-shows or visit main reception.

INVINSIBLE

THE HELEN REDDY STORY Helen Reddy was the little girl from Australia who went to America and made it big. She’s sold over 15 million albums worldwide and now her music is coming to Bankstown Sports. Helen Reddy is one of the most iconic female singers in Australian music history. Her hit I Am Woman was the anthem of the feminist movement in the 1970s and is still the song she is best known for, four decades later. She’s produced three number one hits on the US billboard charts and multiple top ten records over the course of her long career, and she’s widely recognised as the queen of '70s pop. She starred in her own prime-time TV show and a major Hollywood movie, and played to sell-out houses in Vegas, and around the world. She was also the very first Australian to ever win a Grammy Award… and then she lost it all.

Esteemed performer Nikki Bennett brings this extraordinary true story to the stage in The Invincible Helen Reddy on Saturday, 3 February in The Theatre at Bankstown Sports. Packed with hits including I Am Woman, Delta Dawn, Leave Me Alone, Angie Baby, Ain’t No Way To Treat A Lady, I Don’t Know How To Love Him, Somewhere In The Night and many more, you’ll be singing and dancing in your seat all night long! This incredible show is a first-class tribute to one of the great pioneering female entertainers of our time. Book now for Saturday, 3 February 2018. Tickets are $10 for members, $15 for non-members. Visit BankstownSports.com/live-shows to reserve your seat.

ELVIS

An American Trilogy Three of the world’s leading Elvis tribute artists will take you back to the very beginning, to where it all began for The King.

Elvis Presley is one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, and is among the best-selling artists in the history of recorded music, with estimated record sales of around 600 million worldwide. His singing career began when he was a teenager, and that’s where this incredible tribute show begins. Vic Trevino Jnr embodies the rockabilly sound and raw dance moves of the young Elvis, with songs including Heartbreak Hotel and Blue Suede Shoes. Gino Monopoli then recreates the sophisticated feel and sound of the movie years, performing tracks from some of The King’s most iconic films including Love Me

Tender, Jailhouse Rock, G.I Blues, Kid Galahad, Speedway and many more. Gino also takes you back to the iconic 1968 comeback special, which reignited Elvis’ career. And finally, Steve Michaels channels the singer through the years of the famous White Eagle Jumpsuit, recollecting the seventies era with tunes including Burning Love and songs from Aloha from Hawaii. If you’re an Elvis Presley fan, you won’t want to miss this show! Book now for Saturday, 10 March 2018. For the KIDS! Our annual Christmas toy drive and ham raffle is on again, so it’s time to dig deep! Having a sick child in hospital is a stressful time for a family, especially at Christmas. Bankstown Bowls wants to ease the burden a little this festive season, so we’re running our annual fundraiser to spread some Christmas cheer to those in need. Last year, we collected 80 brand new toys and took them to boys and girls who had to spend Christmas at The Children’s Hospital in Westmead. Their smiles could have lit up the entire street! We’re aiming to beat that this year, so if you would like to get involved, simply drop a new, unused and unwrapped

toy to the club before 15 December. We’re also running our very popular ham raffle to raise money for the hospital. We’re aiming to top last year’s incredibly successful result where our members, guests and staff collected almost $5,000. That was topped up with a $1,000 donation from the Bankstown Sports Club Board, which meant we had enough money to purchase the hospital a patient transport stretcher. If you would like to get involved or for more information, please contact the club on 02 9790 0176.

"If you would like to get involved in the Bankstown Sports Bowls Toy Drive, simply drop a new, unused and unwrapped toy to the club before 15 December."

Sports Report

Kyle Cranston goes

THE EXTRA MILE! The former Bankstown Sports Athletics Club member produced an upset win at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei. The Universiade is one of the largest international sporting events in the world, attracting more than 20,000 athletes from 170 countries. Held every two years, there are summer games and winter games, which are widely viewed as a stepping stone for emerging young sport stars wanting to compete in future Commonwealth and Olympic Games. In other words, it’s the Olympic Games for students. Kyle Cranston was a member of the Bankstown Sports Athletics Club throughout his childhood and teenage years, and he is currently studying Exercise and Sports Science at the Australian Catholic University. He has also just become Australia’s first ever medallist in the decathlon at the Summer Universiade. The decathlon consists of ten events held over two consecutive days, including 100m sprint, hurdles, 400m and 1500m run, shot put, javelin, high jump, long jump, discus and pole vault. It requires athletes to be a ‘Jack of all trades’. The 24-year-old was ranked twelfth heading into the games and began his 10-event

campaign in spectacular fashion, leading the competition at the end of day 1. He had scored a personal best total of 4,016 points after a time of 11.12 seconds in the 100m sprint heats, a 7.04m long jump, a personal best throw of 13.76m in the shot put, 1.98m clearance in the high jump and a 400m run recorded in 48.99 seconds. On the second day, Kyle excelled in the 110m hurdles, threw 41.53m in the discus, recorded an equal personal best clearance of 4.60m in the pole vault, threw 56.30m in the javelin and then finished the 1500m in 4:42.08. His goal was to reach 7,600 points overall which is the Commonwealth Games B qualifier, and he surpassed that with a total of 7687. He also took home the gold medal! What’s even more extraordinary, is that he has coached himself for the past 12 months, while receiving some support for the technical and mental aspects of the discipline. He is now going to focus his attention on the upcoming Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, and getting an ‘A’ qualifier for the event.

"The decathlon consists of ten events held over two consecutive days, including 100m sprint, hurdles, 400m and 1500m run, shot put, javelin, high jump, long jump, discus and pole vault!"
