JOHN MURRAY OAM (CHAIRMAN)
A TIME FOR REFLECTION, MAKING NEW FRIENDS AND CELEBRATING OUR COMMUNITY. THANK YOU Every now and then, I find myself reflecting on my time here at the club and everything we have achieved over the years. Looking back to where Bankstown Sports started – in a tiny church hall, with only a handful of members – to where it is today, with six clubs, over 70,000 members and 650 staff. We have managed to grow and develop our clubs, make contributions to our local community and provide safe meeting places for people to enjoy a meal or a show, without ever deviating from our ultimate aim, which is to make a difference for our community. American business magnate Warren Buffett once said “someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago” and I feel this is the perfect way to describe our organisation. Our founding members had incredible foresight and dared to dream big when they created Bankstown Sports, and we are all enjoying the benefits today. I would like to thank all of our members and guests, our employees, and members of the Bankstown Sports Club Board, both past and present, for making our club what it is today. WELCOME RONIS REAL ESTATE, UNITY BANK AND FLINDERS CENTRE EARLY LEARNING SCHOOL I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new tenants in Flinders Centre Bankstown. Ronis Real Estate and Unity Bank are now operating from their offices on the ground floor, while the early learning school is in the final stages of accreditation and should be operational soon.
SENIORS WEEK 2019 It was great to see so many people at the Canterbury Bankstown City Council Seniors Concert that we hosted in The Grand Ballroom on 24 February, marking the end of another great Seniors Festival celebration. I really love this event, and I think it’s vitally important to keep our seniors connected with the community and to highlight the services available to them if they are feeling alone or isolated.
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT JOHN MURRAY OAM (CHAIRMAN)
Chairman’s Report
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM We’ll be hosting ANZAC Day events at three of our clubs this year and I encourage all of you to come along and get involved. Bankstown Sports Bowls will have a commemoration service followed by their annual Barefoot Bowls fundraiser for Legacy, Birrong Sports will also hold an ANZAC Day ceremony as well as a bowls event to support Legacy, while The Acres Club has planned a fantastic community event for families. We want everyone to have the opportunity to pay their respects to our fallen soldiers and join others in the community as we remember them. HAPPY EASTER TO ALL I love this time of the year when we all get to stop and enjoy some time with family and friends, to celebrate Easter. We have some fun family events happening at our clubs over the long weekend including David Foster’s woodchopping show and a visit from the Easter Bunny. And as always, you can enjoy a delicious meal at our restaurants. Our members and guests are at the centre of everything we do and I look forward to seeing you all at the club soon.
It’s been very exciting to see all of the new faces around the club, grabbing a coffee or some lunch, or having a wander around.

workshops for eight young local girls, culminating in the production of a song and music video. They developed their own lyrics, verses, chorus and a distinctive piano riff, resulting in a song called I Want To Be Treated Equally which reflects the girls’ need for equality, showing how important it is for young women to have a voice in society.
One of these projects is the RESPECT program, which focuses on educating boys and young men about domestic violence and how they can lend their voices to being active agents in preventing it. In 2018, a new project catering specifically to young women, the Sisterhood program was established to provide girls and young women with the opportunity to share their feelings on the importance of being treated equally and with respect.
The I Want To Be Treated Equally song has been performed live at the BYDS showcase held at Bankstown Central, Bankstown Poetry Slam and at the inaugural Granville March For Peace.

BYDS Director Tim Carroll says spreading a powerful message through music has long-lasting effects on the participants and the audience. “BYDS has a lot of experience empowering young people through utilising the development of songs. The
participants are guided through the process and are responsible for writing the lyrics. The reinforcement that takes place at multiple levels has positive outcomes for the participants and audience”. “Without the support of Bankstown Sports, this project just would not have happened. Bankstown Sports’ support is invaluable to us here at BYDS, it means pretty much everything to us”. In the last ClubGRANTS year, Bankstown Sports provided $6,000 in support to BYDS. FEATURE STORY LITTLE WINGS
Little Wings
is a non-profit organisation that provides free, professional and safe flight and ground transport services for sick children in rural and regional NSW. The charity has recently relocated to a new hangar at Bankstown Airport to house the aircraft, however there was limited office space for administration. Bankstown Sports has been supporting Little Wings for over 5 years and is honoured to be able to provide their team with a space inside Bankstown Sports, so they can continue to carry out their important work for the community. Little Wings CEO, Richelle Koller, says having an administration space for the team located close to the operations base is vital. “It is great to have the space, and the ability for our team to be able to work
from the one location at the same time. Having an office will enable us to improve our communication and teamwork, and will provide for the future growth of the charity. And of course, we now get to have our lunch breaks at one of the multitude of dining options within the club!” Richelle thanked Bankstown Sports for their ongoing contribution to Little Wings. “Bankstown Sports is a true supporter of Little Wings. The club has been a sponsor of Little Wings since the early days and over the years, it has helped Little Wings in countless ways including sponsorship, event assistance, staff volunteering, and fundraising, to name a few. This is just the latest way that Bankstown Sports has assisted Little Wings and supported us in our growth and journey to help sick children from regional NSW with our free flight service”.

ENJOY TOMBOLA
Tombola
BANKSTOWN SPORTS HAS BEEN PROVIDING MEMBERS AND GUESTS A PREMIUM COMMUNITY HUB FOR THE PAST 60 YEARS. MANY GROUPS MEET IN THE CLUB ON A WEEKLY BASIS, INCLUDING THE ITALIAN ASSOCIATION OF ASSISTANCE CLUB (CO.AS.IT).
For over
20 years members of the group have been meeting weekly to allow people to chat in Italian, play cards, call out numbers in pursuit of bingo or ‘tombola’, as it’s called in Italian, or just enjoy each other’s company. Co.As.It began meeting at Bankstown Sports nine years ago after the club offered to provide a free space for them. Every Thursday at 10am, they meet for games of Tombola which provides members with an opportunity to socialize with their peers in a supportive and culturally appropriate environment. Each week the President of Co.As.It, Angelo Chiandotto, collects $2 from each player who attends, and then the group enjoys feasts together at La Piazza on special occasions such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas. Each week, around 25 players participate in Tombola, some of whom have been visiting Bankstown Sports for over 30 years. The current players would love to welcome new individuals to the group to share a game and laugh with them. All you need to do is show up! For more information on our weekly activities, live shows and entertainment, visit BankstownSports.com.

Simon & Garfunkel
defined the sound and the mood of the 60s. Their music remains timeless for those who experienced it during the era and for those who have discovered their songs in the years after. Inspired by Simon & Garfunkel’s remarkable reunion concert in Central Park, New York in September 1981, which was enjoyed by a live audience of over 500,000 people, Mark Shelley and John Robertson will take you back to where you were, what you felt and who you were with when you first heard songs like Mrs. Robinson, Sounds of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Homeward Bound and Scarborough Fair. “It really is a trip down memory lane with this show. We don’t impersonate
or pretend to be the real Simon & Garfunkel but we celebrate the music instead. Our harmonies are exactly the same as Simon & Garfunkel’s harmonies and for me, the most important thing is to respect the songs and the way they were originally written and recorded” says Mark. Backed by their stunning band, Shelly & Robertson’s vocals, musicianship and humour will recreate the magic of the songs, sounds and times that were Simon & Garfunkel.

This event is known as the Barefoot Bowls Fundraiser for Legacy and was established in 2013 by Bankstown Club President John Murray OAM. “My support for Legacy goes back years and years, when the old Legacy House – which used to be across the road from the club – was sold off. Dozens of women in the Bankstown area who had lost their partners at war, and who used the services of Legacy, had nowhere to go for help or support. I invited them across to the club and suggested they hold their meetings there, and they’re still coming here to this day”. John says he knows first-hand the effect war can have on a family, and he hopes the fundraiser will make a difference to
the families of our ex-servicemen and women. “In 1942, my brother was sadly killed during the second World War. My mother had been receiving regular endowment payments from him while he was overseas and after his passing, Legacy helped to continue those payments. It is my passion to help people and I hope we can make a difference to the families of those who served our country.”

for Legacy and John says he would love to see more people there.
Copies of original photos supplied by John Murray are pictured above from the second world war taken by his late brother. It’s hoped this year’s event will raise over $4,000 for Legacy and John says he would love to see more people there. “The atmosphere of the event is very sincere and I really look forward to the comradery. Over 700 people use the services of Legacy in the Bankstown area and I think it’s really important to support our friends and neighbours”.

Welcome Baulkham Hills Hawks THE BAULKHAM HILLS SPORTS FAMILY HAS GAINED ANOTHER MEMBER, AS WE WELCOME THE BAULKHAM HILLS HAWKS TO OUR NETWORK OF ASSOCIATED SPORTING CLUBS.
The Baulkham
Hills Australian Football Club was formed in 1976 as a junior football club, and fielded just three teams in its first year - Under 11s, Under 13s and Under 15s. Over the past 42 years, it has been an incredibly successful club with significant growth, due to their welcoming and supportive community culture. The Hawks have a very strong membership base and a loyal volunteer support network and since the early 1980’s they have managed to consistently place two teams per age division every year, which is no mean feat in the Sydney AFL competition. The club currently boasts a membership of nearly 400 players with teams across 12 age groups, a successful Auskick program for 5 to 8-year olds, and a number of successful all-girls teams spanning across all Youth Girl competitions. The club also encourages family involvement in games, with parents,

grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings given the opportunity to umpire games. The Hawks’ mission is to continue to grow and nurture AFL in their community and to encourage young people to get involved in the sport. With the ongoing success of the Bankstown Sports Bullsharks AFL Club and the Greenacre Auskick program, we are excited to welcome aboard the Baulkham Hills AFL Club whose commitment to grassroots junior sport, and their belief in providing a fun and safe way for young people to participate in sport, strongly aligns with Bankstown Sports’ values and culture. Baulkham Hills Australian Football Club is proud to join the Baulkham Hills Sports network of associated sporting clubs. If you wish to join the Hawks please contact Kirsten Groll on 0432 689 958 or alternatively by email at baulkoexec@baulko.org.au.

Bankstown Jets Touch Pasifika Festival THE PASIFIKA TOUCH FESTIVAL COMBINES CULTURE, ENTERTAINMENT, FOOD, FUN AND SPORT.
Bankstown Jets
Touch ended 2018 with a bang as they hosted the third annual Pasifika Touch Festival in conjunction with local pacific businesses. Held at Vale of Ah Reserve in Milperra, the Pasifika event was a huge success with over 45 teams participating in the tournament across six divisions, including Bankstown Jets Touch players, social teams, family teams and church groups. Individuals were also welcome to sign up to be allocated into a team. During the event, there were a variety of Maori and Polynesian food stalls serving up all the favourites such as Hangi, Chop Suey and Curry with rice. Dance groups from Dance Nation, Le Samoana Entertainment and Pacific Wave performed during the event and there were also traditional Maori performances, including the Haka. A range of special guests were present at the event including former NRL stars

Dene Halatau, Frank Puletua, Frank Pritchard and Greg Eastwood. Current Australian touch player Jordan MarshallKing, also attended. The Pasifika Touch Festival is the brainchild of Bankstown Jets Touch Football Club Secretary and Bankstown Sports 2018 Volunteer of the Year, Mette Kitiona, says it’s great to watch the community enjoy touch football together. “The highlight of the event was seeing everything come together and everyone having fun as one big community, enjoying the sport. Seeing people who may never have played before giving touch football a go and enjoying themselves also made the Pasifika Touch Festival a rewarding experience.”

LOCAL SPORT BANKSTOWN SPORTS ATHLETICS CLUB
Bankstown Sports Athletics Club Hosts Prestigious Albie Thomas Mile RECORDS WERE BROKEN AND HISTORY WAS MADE WHEN BANKSTOWN SPORTS ATHLETICS CLUB HOSTED THE FIRST AUSTRALIAN MILE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 25 YEARS.
On Saturday
22 December 2018, the best middle-distance runners from around the country came together at The Crest Athletics Track in Georges Hall, for the annual Albie Thomas Mile and the resurrected Australian Mile Championships, hosted by Bankstown Sports Athletics Club. The Albie Thomas Mile is a celebration of Australian running and its signature Mile Race saw the best of the best of Australian runners battle it out for a prize pool of $12,000 and the prestigious National Mile Crown, which was awarded again for the first time in 25 years. Three Bankstown Sports Athletics Club athletes competed in the A Championship men’s and women’s elite races, and over 50 athletes competed across the course of the event. Matthew Ramsden from Western Australia took out the men’s mile finishing the race in an outstanding 3:59.12, ahead of two-time Olympian
Ryan Gregson from Victoria, and Bankstown Sports Athletics Club representative, Rorey Hunter. Whitney Sharpe from Victoria won the women’s mile in 4:37.32, ahead of twotime Olympian and Australian 5,000m Steeple Chase champion Genevieve Gregson. Bankstown Sports Athletics Club athlete, Jaylah Hancock-Cameron came in a close fourth place, just two seconds out of the top three with a time of 4:41.98, making her the fastest Under 18 female miler in the world. Bankstown Sports Athletics Club President, Colin Whitbread said he was pleased to see the community get involved in the event. “Bankstown Sports Athletics Club was tremendously pleased with the event from a participation, high-performance and community engagement perspective. What was most pleasing, was that more than 50 recreation joggers and runners participated in
the community run, with many running on the track for the very first time, on the same night that the Australian Mile Championship was contested for the first time in 25 years and hosted by a local club for the first time ever.” “The event was testament to the dedication of the Bankstown Sports Athletics Club member volunteers who did months of work to put on a remarkable event.” Athletics NSW writer, David Tarbotton*, says the event was a great success. “The event looks to be here to stay thanks to the outstanding commitment of the Bankstown Sports Athletics Club, led by President Colin Whitbread. They rallied dozens of members who worked closely with a small group of Athletics NSW officials to host an outstanding event”. *Quote sourced from www.nswathletics.org.au BANKSTOWN SPORTS INTOUCH MAR, APR & MAY 2019
